Then go write it!
It will fix boredom
It will become a story on A03
Anyone can do it
Depending on how long you spend working on it, it might not be 2024 anymore by the time you’re done
Au where the Tallest send Zim to earth like normal but don’t give him any equipment, including a base. So Zim realizes that in order to successfully take over the earth he’s going to need pretty advanced technology that already exists somewhere on earth, and decides that the best way to get stuff like that that is to pose as a human orphan and get himself adopted by the smartest person on earth, Professor Membrane.
Membrane has no idea that his new adopted son is an alien but Dib is freaking out in the background because AN ALIEN INVADER HAS COME TO EARTH AND IS POSING AS MY NEW SIBLING.
So Dib is desperately trying to prove that Zim is an alien and is finding it much harder than in the normal series because they’re so (physically) close to each other all the time.
Zim is finding it much harder to hide the fact that he’s an alien and create evil plans because he’s constantly surrounded by humans.
Gaz doesn’t really care as long as Zim doesn’t get in her way.
And Membrane is basically just having this experience:

They’re actually non-binary (despite the wiki misgendering them).
Not only does Poki have a mix between male and female Irken traits (eyelashes with straight antennae), implying that Poki’s physical appearance is androgynous by Irken standards, but in the comic itself Poki is never referred to with any gendered terms.
The closest we get to that is Zim calling Poki “Senior-Commander-PERSON Poki”, which is gender neutral.
Holy shit I was looking through the invader Zim wiki and suddenly realized

This woman is trans !!!
Her antennae are male

One thing I will always like about Professor Membrane is the fact that out of all the paranormal creatures in the world, he only believes in Santa, and he only believes in Santa JUST so he can hunt him down and destroy him. Like this man is believing in Santa purely out of spite and a desire for revenge.
Screw other TV scientist parents that tell their kids that Santa isn’t real, Professor Membrane, despite being a hard non-believer in anything supernatural, goes “yeah Santa’s real, BUT HE WON’T BE FOR LONG WHEN I GET MY HANDS ON HIM!” to his kids whenever they ask questions about Santa.
I want to point out that he has no evidence that Santa even exists, but still constantly tries to hunt him down from December 1st to December 25th. Santa may be one of the only supernatural creatures in the Invader Zim Universe that genuinely doesn’t exist, and he’s the only one that Professor Membrane believes in the existence of.

Does anyone know what episode this is because I swear I’ve seen it before but don’t know from where.
Is it even from an official episode? Am I hallucinating from the 7 days of Covid?

Working on a huge Recap Kid related project and here’s a slightly sad fact:
Recap Kid is aware of the artstyle changes in the comic when they happen. They’re also freaked out by them, listing changes in the Comic Artstyle as one of their few non-dog-related fears.
They later mention upon noticing themselves going through a change in artstyle that the artstyle changes tend to give them a massive existential crisis whenever they happen.

In general, I feel like Zim’s panic and paranoia are very important aspects of his character that sadly often get overlooked and underutilized in the fandom. I feel like some folks just kinda go ‘oh, well, Zim thinks he is the greatest and most fearsome Invader in the universe so obviously he is certain that he can beat every obstacle’ when… I mean, sometimes he is like this - but some of Zim’s most iconic moments are powered by his fear and anxieties about failure.
So many of Zim’s schemes are motivated by an assumption that Humans are a lot smarter and more observant than they actually are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or even just scarier and more dangerous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He probably would have conquered the planet in a day if he just directly pulled all of the technology he had at his disposal and marched his way publicly to President Land. But he is just so obsessed with the idea that the Enemy is basically constantly one second away from uncovering him that he just wastes his time on pointless ‘infiltration’ and ludicrously overcomplicated ideas of how to ‘subtly’ take over or weaken the Earth’s defenses via fast-food or the Skool Student Council or Dookie.
I mean, that is basically Duty!GIR’s big complaint about Zim in ‘GIR Goes Crazy and Stuff’. His progress has been stupid, because he’s been far too Stupidly Subtle about information gathering and world conquest and information gathering for the purpose of world conquest. When literally just heading to the public library and sucking out people’s brains is actually incredibly effective and has no real consequences.
Tumblr media
‘Walk for Your Lives’ is another excellent example of how Zim’s extreme ego and extreme anxiety go together. Zim is driven entirely by a totally made-up arbitrary ticking clock revolving around the idea that the Tallests WILL call again soon and so he MUST get rid of the Time Explosion NOW.
Tumblr media
But he’s overconfident in the sense that he is certain that the solution he comes up with is Actually Good and won’t just make everything worse even as literally everyone around tells him it would.
Tumblr media
Enter the Florpus’ plot kicks off with a very similar scenario. Zim just comes up with a Made-Up Deadline and a Made-Up Consequence for ‘forgetting Phase 2’ and just starts… stressing himself up with it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On one level I think this is like… also a weird result of his Ego. You know, the logic being that if any potential challenge is not 100% effortless for him, Irk’s most amazing and powerful Invader, then it must be a horrible and fearsome threat. If Zim actually fully admitted that Earth is the stupidest, easiest-to-conquer planet in the universe - he would have to admit that failing to conquer this planet of all planets makes him a huge-ass loser. So instead, Zim salvages his own pride by constantly overestimating the humans.
But I also think in general Zim has a lot of anxiety and nervous energy. Maybe just from all the insecurities and failures he’s trying to deny and ignore all the time? And he’s just channeling them into the only channels he can consciously acknowledge - worrying about his enemies.

I like to think that zim uses and has more control over his pack legs/tech than any other irken (included more upgrades)
What are your thoughts?
I have similar headcanons!
I headcanon that irkens get career-specific PAK upgrades and equipment, and due to Zim’s defects causing errors in the monitoring equipment and irken systems in general, he’s kept a lot of upgrades and equipment from previous jobs that otherwise would have been removed (like the organ harvesting device, which I headcanon came from Zim’s original scientist job).
I also headcanon that due to Zim’s defects, his control over his PAK was different compared to other irkens when he was a smeet.
For the first 10 years of a Smeet’s life as they’re still on Irk (or another one of the few planets where Smeets are made), the various tools and systems in their PAK are enabled gradually as they age for both the Smeet’s safety and so they have a chance to get used to the PAK and all the things it can do. Basically: Smeets often have trouble using and controlling their PAK’s equipment and need to be taught how to use it, so they have more and more stuff enabled as they grow and learn.
PAK legs are enabled rather early in life so the Smeet can learn how to use them properly as soon as possible since they’re so important, the EVA Pack is enabled around when the Irken learns to drive a ship, weapons are enabled close to the end of the Smeet’s time in the academy when they’re being taught pure military stuff, the massive square laser beam fired from all 4 PAK legs at once that we see Zim and Tak use is only enabled once the Smeet graduates because it’s one of the most powerful weapon the PAK has access to without any career-specific upgrades, etc.
Irkens born defective tend to have less of these restrictions because the PAK has less control in general, so a common way of finding defectives is finding smeets that have access to stuff they normally wouldn’t at that age.
Zim is EXTREMELY defective, so he basically had access to all of his PAK equipment right from the get go, but without the knowledge of how to properly control and use it since Smeets aren’t exactly born with that information. He was thrown into the deep end of PAK equipment right from birth and had to figure it out himself in a very short amount of time or die when someone noticed he had access to more stuff than he should.
This led to a lot of problems and incidents with Zim. He could try to use the tool attachments on his PAK legs, accidentally fire a laser from them and then have to hide the damage because he isn’t supposed to have access to the PAK lasers for another few years, or try to use one tool and accidentally pull out a completely different thing because he has way too many options and his little Smeet self hasn’t been taught how to properly control them yet.
By now though, Zim is completely in control of his PAK, having learned himself and practically acing all of his final PAK equipment related tests because he had several years of additional practice and experience.
