If Barb had survived, do you guys think that she would have realized she shouldn't have judged Nancy so harshly for sleeping with Steve or do you think that she still would have disliked Steve which might have Nancy to eventually distance herself from Barb for constantly ragging on Steve? I'm not trying to start an argument, just generally curious. I like to think what would have happened would make her think and realize that it wasn't her place to tell Nancy not to sleep with Steve. I also like to think that eventually, she would have told Nancy she was projecting her own sexuality onto her. I just hate that Barb's last words still linger in her mind. "This isn't you, Nance." I think it would have been nice to see Barb realize that just because she only likes girls doesn't necessarily mean that Nancy only likes girl. I kind of hope there's still a part of Barb still in the Upside Down trying to help them and that eventually, Steve and Nancy are able to get closure from that.

Please tell me your punk!Steve thoughts.
OH BOY I HAVE A LOT - besides what i’ll probably infodump abt here i have lowkey fleshed out an entire backstory for punk steve under the #punk steve au
(to summarize, steve decides to become a punk and rebel against his parents instead of doing what they want and being a jock)
he introduces punk culture to el and max and they adore it (el loves the pastel punk aesthetic)
he doesn’t use any of his parents money (but continues to live in their house bc he doesn’t really have anywhere else to go and doesn’t want to burden any of the multiple families that would take him in), is a lifeguard in the summer and takes odd jobs around fall and winter.
he goes to Indianapolis as often as possible and learns most of what he knows from Elder Punks he meets there. there’s a couple small punk/alt stores he always stops by and a few bars/clubs. everyone he meets loves him (and baby punks in general but they find it really cool that he comes from privilege yet decides to rebel against ideals that were made so he could succeed at the failure of others).
he’s also introduced to the queer community a lot earlier on, and realizes he’s mlm (i hc him as gay but i can also see him as bi) and there’s a bunch of Elder Gays who adopt him.
he’s pretty much the only punk in Hawkins, so he kinda gets a reputation. in his freshman year he mostly keeps to himself, doesn’t really dress the way he wants and just wants to make it through the year. sophomore year though, he befriends jonathan nancy and barb and starts dressing and acting the way he wants to. him and jonathan listen to music together and he helps out with will when joyce and jonathan need to work- which eventually leads to him meeting mike dustin and lucas and taking care of them too.
steve realizes he wants to be strong enough to protect the people he cares about, so him and jonathan train and work out together a bit. steve and nancy don’t date, but they’re best friends along with barb. i just need to see barb and steve as besties it would make me so happy. also nancy and barb are in love bc obviously.
halfway through sophomore year steve gets a job at the local mechanics (mechanic eddie this, mechanic eddie that, no! give me mechanic steve who has a special interest in cars! just look at his beemer! and like the sole decoration he has in his room is a photo of a car!)
SO. junior year. this is when he starts going to indianapolis a lot more frequently. he buys records and camera stuff for jonathan, and drawing supplies for will (he basically lives with the byers atp). he is a lot more sure of himself, wears combat boots and battle jackets, and is damn good at fighting (he worked really hard at it the summer before). if anyone harms the kids he will not hesitate to hit someone, and this becomes town-wide knowledge very quick.
when will disappears in november, steve is the first person joyce calls before karen. he joins the search parties, he goes to lonnie instead of jonathan (steve would rather die than make jonathan face his abuser again). basically he’s involved with the upside down shit from the start.
also, steve accidentally finds out about el when dustin and lucas do. he offers to have her stay at his house, mike is reluctant but agrees, and el immediately becomes steve’s new baby sister. steve still saves the day at the end of s1 with the demogorgon, but the fight with jonathan and all of that doesn’t happen.
i accidentally plotted the whole show with this au…
steve finds el s2 and actually fucking tells the Party instead of hiding it like hopper did. el just permanently lives at steve’s now.
oh yeah and barb doesn’t die so that’s a thing that changes s2 a lot. i lost track of where this was going so i’m gonna just drop hcs i have about punk steve
he paints his nails black, he has a few piercings, he doesn’t really like the feeling of makeup on his face but he puts on eyeliner occasionally, he lets his hair grow out more and has perfected the ‘messy bedhead that somehow looks good’ look, he has big combat books and uses lace code, he’s gay but says he would go straight for joan jett (me too tbh), he has a reputation of “don’t fuck with me or my kids” in Hawkins, he also lowkey converts robin into a punk but she’s more indie-alt like jonathan, he doesn’t play any instruments but has a great voice and perfect pitch, will and el help him make one of his favorite battle vests, will is very crafty and artistic so he helps steve with a lot of his stuff, he has a few tattoos, he can do cool lighter tricks lol, etc.

"Ronance." I say into the mic.
the crowd boos. People jeer at me "JANCY!" "STANCY!" "SIX LITTLE NUGGETS!"
I hang my head, ready to walk off stage in shame when a voice cries out, "She's right!"
I look out into the crowd and standing there in the front row is ronance-truther Natalia Dyer herself, "Robin and Nancy ARE SO in love BITCHES!"

my love for comphet lesbian nancy is SO STRONG like probably one of my favorite headcanons ever
in a lot of fic/posts robin is nancy’s ‘awakening’ to being queer and while that’s cute i think a diff path is more interesting
nancy knowing that she’s different (or in her mind, something is wrong with her) from a young age, hearing that the way she feels isn’t normal, it’s bad
throwing everything she has into the first boy that doesn’t make her skin crawl, that’s everything she’s supposed to want and more, and it feels good to be what she’s supposed to be that she takes it as confirmation that she’s not what she feared
and then her best friend dies, and any satisfaction she got is gone, because none of that matters when barb, who mattered to her in ways steve could never match up to, is gone.
steve doesn’t work, he physically can not work in her mind anymore when he resembles everything that nancy feels got barb killed, but its too hard to imagine he never worked in the first place, and she finds herself falling into her relationship with jonathan
this time is different, she’s sure of it, he gets her, in a way that steve didn’t. he sees that she’s different, and maybe she really is different in the way he sees her, and that he accepts her for it, and they get along. she loves jonathan, she knows that, in the moments with him she has an unwavering friend
it takes her too long to come to terms with the fact that she loves jonathan, but not in the way she wants to, not in the way she needs to. every time she pictures her future, what she really wants, jonathan isn’t there. she never warms up to the idea of marrying him or having a family with him; she wants what she has with him forever, this camaraderie, and the physical affection they share is what it is. it’s simple.
she does not truly see, or at the very least does not accept what she knows to be, the root of problem until she meets robin buckley, who she finds herself melting into long after it’s too late to separate herself for good.
robin buckley reintroduces nancy to fire. steve is sweet, jonathan is soft, but robin gives nancy heat. talking to her, every little thing makes nancy feel, it captures her. she’s never bored, even for a second, she’s either annoyed, or excited, or amused, or enamored, because robin is unlike anything she’s ever met.
when robin looks at her a certain way, or stands close to her, or holds her hand, everything is amplified. contact with jonathan is sweet, its comforting, but contact with robin is like a live wire. kissing jonathan is nice, but she never feels the urge to initiate, she’s never left wanting more. with robin, nancy looks at her lips often, wonders what the press of robin against her would feel like, and she’s left wanting for once.
when she finally asks, she gets what she wants, and its more than anything she’s ever imagined, anything she ever thought she could get from love and lust. nancy finds desire and real love in robin buckley, and when she does she finds she could never ask for anything else.
idk just a thought i had nbd❤️‍🔥

I think about how Barb and Robin were both in band. And how Barb would have definitely been friends with Robin. And how they were both lesbians. And how they bonded over sharing their crushes with each other. For Robin, it was Tammy. For Barb, it was Nancy. And like…what if Robin told Nancy that Barb was in love with her…
TW/CW: Light internalized and external homophobia
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
Nancy looks back over her shoulder at Steve and Eddie, watches as Eddie leans in and Steve's answering smile at whatever Eddie says. She turns back and looks at the taller girl walking beside her. Robin keeps her eyes on the ground, searching for all the safe places to put her feet - each step hesitating in awkward balance before it touches ground.
"You know," Robin sighs, as if she can feel Nancy's eyes on her, "it doesn't help to have you glaring at me."
"I'm not glaring." Nancy argues.
Robin looks over at her briefly before looking back to her feet, "It feels like a glare."
Nancy chuckles, "It's more of a...a considerate observation."
Robin pauses and looks directly at Nancy. She tries to hide her smile while she repeats, "A considerate observation?"
Nancy continues forward, allows the distance to hide her own smile, "Exactly."
Robin closes the gap so they walk side by side again, "Well, I appreciate your considerate observation to be limited as we navigate Vecna/Henry/One's landmines."
"Yeah, no worries." Nancy looks down at the grey earth and dark vines.
Silence fills the space until Steve's laugh echoes around them. Robin giggles in response as if her and Steve are even connected to each other's joy. Nancy's heart sinks a little.
"You know, I used to be like that with Barb." Nancy says as if she can't keep it in anymore.
"Hmm?" Robin hums as she giggles again with Steve.
"That." Nancy says, keeping her eyes down. "Barb was my best friend and it was like, even if we didn't know what was happening, if one of us was happy the other felt it just as much."
"Nance - " Robin's voice is soft.
"It's really special you have that with him. And Steve, he deserves to have someone who giggles when he laughs, who feels everything for him as if it were happening to them. Steve deserves a best friend, who - "
"Nancy. Steve and I are best friends, nothing more." Robin intterupts.
"I know. I know, you've said that."
"Platonic. Completely platonic, trust me."
"Yeah, but still, it's nice he has someone who he's that close with."
They fall into silence.
But Robin isn't good with silence and suddenly she says, "I was friends with Barb you know."
"You were?" Nancy immediately regrets the statement. The guilt of not knowing Barb had been friends with Robin seeping into her blood, cold and fast. She mutters, "God, I was a shitty friend."
"No, you weren't. Nancy - " Robin cuts herself short.
Nancy looks over at her, "What?"
Robin looks up at the grey sky as it flashes red, "I promised I wouldn't say anything..."
Nancy's chest grows tight. Her mouth is dry.
"...but maybe at this point you should know." Robin looks back down at Nancy, her blue eyes wide and pleading for understanding.
"You...you don't have to tell me..." Nancy finally chokes out.
Robin sighs, "I feel like you need to know. And maybe it's this place. Maybe it's the fact that we could like all die in a matter of seconds or maybe it's because I would want to know if I were you but I'm not you so maybe you don't want to know and it's not like I have any real right to assume your feelings - "
"Robin." Nancy interjects, panic lacing itself into her tone, "Robin, just tell me."
"Ok, but...but you have to promise this won't ruin your idea of Barb." Robin lets out a shaky breath.
Nancy studies her face. The other girl looks scared, more scared then she had just been a moment ago fighting interdimensional bats. She looks terrified.
"I promise," Nancy finally says with a curt nod.
"Ok..." Robin stops and looks at the dirt, toes it a bit with her shoe, "Nancy...Barb didn't think you were a shitty friend. Barb...Barb loved you."
Nancy strains to hear the last part but she catches it and it doesn't make sense...that was what Robin was afraid to say?
"Robin, I know. Barb and I were best friends."
Robin bites her bottom lip and releases it with a sigh, "No, Nancy. Barb loved you."
"I know Rob - "
"No. You don't.” Robin’s voice is sharp, a tone Nancy has never heard from her. She opens her arms wide and drops them, her tone also dropping to something softer, “She was in love with you. She wanted to be the one who held your hand. She wanted to be the one to sneak kisses at your locker. She wanted to be the one whose name you scribbled in your notebook. She wanted to be Steve, Nancy. She was your best friend, but she wanted to be your girlfriend." Robin has tears in her eyes as she looks at Nancy, her words coming out in a rush. "She loved you Nancy."
Nancy's heart cracks, “She…”
“She loved you and I promised I wouldn’t say anything and Barb will probably hate me forever…but I had to tell you. She could never hate you, Nancy, because she loved you.” Robin’s voice wavers like a loose string on a guitar, “You have to forgive yourself, because she already has.”
Nancy blinks and a few tears slip down her cheeks, “I…”
“Nancy if you’re about to say something bad…please don’t…I just know Barb would hate to see you eaten away by misplaced guilt.” Robin mutters, her own tear filled eyes studying the ground.
“I…never knew…I…” Nancy sputters.
“Well you know, she didn’t want to ruin your friendship. It’s not like she could have walked up to you and told you and then both of you act like nothing changed. That just doesn’t happen for u- ” Robin snaps her mouth shut and looks off to the side.
“I…” Nancy starts and then stops unsure of what to say. Her head is a tornado of memories mixed with shock. She can feel her heartbeat in her throat and her stomach flip flop. And all the while she is staring at Robin with pleading eyes.
Robin finally looks up, swipes the back of her hand across her cheeks, “Just tell me you don’t hate her.”
“I could never.” Nancy finally says, but her voice is so soft she wonders if Robin even heard her.
Robin nods her head and starts forward again. Nancy stares at the place she stood. A tiny memory of a feeling bubbles up in Nancy’s chest, and she knows it can never go back under all it had been buried under now.
She follows quietly behind Robin. And allows the snapshots to filter through her.
Snap - Nancy’s crying as her dad throws out her Barbies because he caught Nancy letting them kiss. Girls don’t kiss other girls. It’s wrong. Karen talk some sense into your daughter.
Snap - Nancy’s staring at a make-up advertisement trying to ignore the way the model’s lips and eyelashes make her stomach feel.
Snap - Nancy imagining herself saving the princess in the fairytale books instead of a knight…
Snap - Nancy watching in middle school as Lindsey Bennett had egg salad dumped on her as everyone laughed and pointed. The echoing sound of dyke being chanted all because Lindsey cut her hair.
Snap - Nancy policing herself in the locker room.
Snap - Nancy and Barb giggling and holding hands under the blankets at a sleepover. How all Nancy wanted was for Barb to be her first kiss but then she remembered the Barbies and she jerked her hand away and snapped that it was time to go to sleep.
Nancy swallows.
Snap - The guilt when Barb went missing wasn’t all just guilt, it was heartbreak. And how every night Nancy had to tell herself she was just sad, nothing more.
Snap - Nancy taking down every picture and removing every gift and hiding it all away with Barb’s sweater after the upside down. And Nancy telling her mom to just forget it when she noticed the change in Nancy’s bedroom.
Snap - Nancy letting all of her friendships outside of The Party, especially with women, just disappear…
Snap.
Robin looks back over her shoulder and comes to a stop when she sees Nancy’s face.
“Nance are you ok?”
Nancy looks up and gives a jerky smile, tears fall down her cheeks, “Yeah, yeah. I’ll be fine. I just wish she could have told me.”
Robin frowns and reaches out a hand towards Nancy. Nancy takes the offered hand, grateful for the grounding feeling it gives her. They walk on hand-in-hand. Robin gives her a reassuring squeeze every third step which makes Nancy smile. The sky breaks red in a jagged pattern before stitching together in dark grey, and Nancy thinks her heart must look the same way.
