My African parent may never tell me the words "I love you" but I know they do.

When they come into your room, put on the light for a millisecond and see that you are in bed.

When they cover your leg that is sticking out as you sleep, to be fair that is the best technique.

When they show up early for visiting day and stay the whole day.

when they pass the phone so that you can speak with the whole clan, aunties and uncles you have never heard of.

When they introduce themselves as your parent without necessarily having to.

When they google something you are interested in and they have no idea how it works and they want to understand you.

When they tell you stories of themselves (without exaggeration) from their pasts.

When they refer to your future possible children by their names.

When they refer people to their daughters and sons who are medical students but still calls them *daktari* for medical help.

When they hold you as they introduce you to friends.

Editorial . There is always an overhanging unspoken pressure at the beginning of things, a book, a story, a movie, a song. It is no different for me right now. I personally believe that it is because beginnings often overlay the rest of the tone, they set the bar, aid us to set out expectations. Last year, my Uncle, Aunt, cousins and I were brainstorming this idea. It was all banter, insight, jokes, engineering and tech things I did not understand so they explained it to me. They're making it happen a couple months later. It will be big. It awed me: I have never been this closely involved in the process of changing the world- even small pieces of it. It made me feel like my doubts were a tent I hide in to avoid working- failing, hurting.  Last year, as my cousin and I were walking home, I told her of this story I want to write: she said "can't wait for the first draft". I know this will be the year I'll start my process of changing however small a slice of the world. It's the precipice and I am more afraid than anything.

For a long time, I blamed my friend for that kiss. I was angry at him for persisting when I said no. I was angry that he put me in that situation. I was also angry at myself for not having the strength to say no firmly. I felt really violated by my friend. How could he do this to me? Had such a dope experience this weekend. I was popping up with @juakaliproducts this weekend at the @noirlinians Meet Up/Pop Up and decided to put a few of my books out. This woman comes by really excited and starts to tell me how awesome the book is and how the author is also a dope performer and how she tells EVERYONE to read this book and reads it often herself. We shared a laugh when I told her I was the author, and then she went home to get her copy she'd bought from me THREE years ago. Y'all know when you see a book and can tell it's been read? Coming to terms with being the villain in someone's story, has really been uplifting.
