I have always thought that Juli and Pepa would have such a great bond with each other. It was never really explored in the movie and I wish it had been, but that is why fanfiction is so amazing. I wanted to write something sweet and a little fluffy for them, so I thought I would do a little one shot about them with their babies! Baby Isa and baby Dolores have my heart. Really hope you like this!
Read under the cut or over on AO3!
[Synopsis: When a worn out Pepa needs a hand with Dolores one afternoon, Julieta is more than willing to help.]
Moving her baby girl back from her breast once she was asleep and using one hand to sort her undergarments, Julieta ran that same hand through her curls before pulling her sleeve back up and cradling her daughter close once again. She smiled when Isa made a gentle sound of contentment in her sleep, curling a chubby hand into her apron as she nestled in her arms, and once she was sure she was comfortable she lowered her head to kiss her temple. At six months old, her hija was growing up so much and becoming more independent by the day, but she still wouldn’t go to sleep unless she was in her arms and she honestly didn’t mind that in the slightest.
It was the thing that made her longer days simpler to get through and gave her a much needed break, coming up to the nursery with her to just sit and nurse her and then stay awhile while she napped, and she just loved spending time with her in general. It took longer than she ever imagined it would to get pregnant and not for lack of trying. It was about a year into their marriage when she and Agustín decided to start working on their little familia and, for some reason, she had it in her head that it would all happen instantaneously. She would get pregnant, have the simplest, most relaxing pregnancy and then give birth to a beautiful baby in due course.
Of course, because this was real life and not some fairy tale, that wasn’t at all how it ended up panning out.
It took three years for her to fall pregnant and there was once a time, truly, when she almost convinced herself it was never going to happen. She feared it was her fault and there was something wrong with her, so she went to see the doctor – unbeknownst to her esposo because she knew it would only panic him unnecessarily – and his tests concluded that she was in perfect condition. It was his expert opinion that she and Agustín needed to just stop being anxious about things. It was the anxiety preventing them from getting pregnant and the sooner they relaxed and just allowed nature to take its course, things would gradually start to work out in their favour.
Of course, she still had her doubts and it took quite some time for her to truly stop fretting about things, but in time she succeeded in getting a handle over it and that was when it happened. It was actually only a month or so before their anniversary when she found out she was expecting their baby girl, so she decided to keep the whole thing a secret from him until the day arrived and then she would break the news to him. It took her a while to work out how she wanted to do it, but in the end she chose to go with something simple. She knitted a tiny cardigan and hat and wrote the usual card to him, but signed it both by herself and a ‘secret somebody’.
Him being the daft hombre he was, he didn’t completely catch on until he opened the box containing the little knitted items. His reaction alone, the way he caught her in a dizzying kiss before picking her up and spinning her around, made having to keep her mouth shut about the pregnancy for such a long time all the more worth it. It was a long nine months that followed and they had a couple of scares, the worst one being when she had a bleed at around six months in and was ordered to stay in bed for several weeks, but for the most part it was an incredible experience and there was no doubt in her mind that the whole thing brought her and Gus closer.
Not only them, but her and Pepa too.
Her hermana found out she was expecting her own baby less than a month after she did and they were able to share the entire experience. She had no doubt that they were both a nightmare to deal with, especially in their last month when they both ached all over and were cranky and had no patience with anyone, but their esposos and hermano never complained. Not to their faces at least. It was probably a whole other story when the three of them went down to the pub together to get away for an hour, but they made sure never to mention it while around them and that was probably for the best. She doubted they would still be alive if they even dared do so.
It was the door creaking open that pulled her from her thoughts and she looked up from her little girl, unable to keep from smirking at the look on her hermana’s face when she wandered in with her daughter on her hip. Dolores, even though she’d taken her for some fresh air to try and settle her almost an hour ago, was still very much awake. Her chubby hand was curled around the end of her braid and she was yanking on it, screeching with delight in her ear as she was clearly loving this new game, but something was telling her that her Mamá wasn’t loving it almost as much. “Oh, hermana, come on…how can you be annoyed at that face?” She laughed.
When she reached the rocking chair next to her own, Pepa all but fell into it and brought her hija into her lap before working her braid carefully out of her vicelike grip. Dolores, clearly less than pleased with her favourite toy being taken away, pouted and was seconds away from screaming the place down before Julieta reached out and tickled her under her chin. Her wailing and waking Isabela when it had taken her long enough to get her to sleep was the last thing she needed, so she breathed a sigh of relief when the girl turned to her and beamed. “I have tried everything…” Pepa sighed gently. “I took her out in her cochecito, I sang to her, I changed her…”
“Have you tried nursing her?”
“I have, but she just keeps pushing me away! I don’t know what else to do.”
She moved her little girl up slightly in her lap and held her tighter when she looked up at her again, the love she had for her deepening when she reached up and grabbed her face so she could pull her down to her. She scattered the softest kisses over her cheeks, smiling at the gentle coos she heard, and when she pulled back and looked at her again she could see in her eyes that she was beyond tired. It truly made no sense to her why she was doing all she could think of to avoid having to go to sleep. Looking over at her hermana again, she glared. “Ay, I hate you sometimes…” She told her, only half joking. “Why is yours always so calm and mine so…not?”
Julieta blinked at her for a second. “Uh…have you met you?”
“Ha, ha, very funny,” She rolled her eyes, shaking her head at her. “Juli, I’m serious.”
“Okay, okay, give me un minuto,” Julieta got up from the rocking chair and carried Isabela over to her basket, carefully lowering her down into it until her back met with the mattress. Her little girl stirred at the loss of her warmth, whimpering softly as her eyes blinked open for a moment, but three light strokes of her finger against her cheek was enough to sooth her and she smiled as she watched her fall quickly back to sleep. She really was the perfect baby. Once she was sure she was sleeping well, she turned back to her hermana and pushed a hand through her hair as she walked over to where she was still sitting with Lolita. “Let me take her for a moment.”
Pepa handed the baby over to her without question and she brought her to sit at her hip, bouncing her lightly and chuckling under her breath when she reached up to tangle a hand in her curls. She was a whirlwind, this little princesa – much like her mamí when they were young – but still so darling and precious and she adored her. “I think your mamí needs a little break, mi vida, so let’s see if this will work,” Her voice was quiet as she carried her over to the little changing table. She laid her down carefully when they reached it and opened the buttons on her cardigan, sliding the garment from her shoulders and smiling when she started to kick her legs.
It took her no time at all – well, once she’d managed to get her to lie still – to remove her dress and tights so she was lying there in just her pañal. She picked her up then and felt that she was shivering a little, just what she was hoping for in all honesty, and after burying a kiss in her curls she began to carry her back over to her mamá. It was clear when her hermana got the hint because she let out a little ‘oh’ and opened the top couple buttons on her dress just enough. “Ven aquí, mi princesa.” She heard her say gently as she accepted her baby back from her and tucked her inside her clothes, brushing her lips against her hairline when she cuddled close.
About twenty seconds, she would say, it took for her eyes to slip closed and her to settle in her arms.
“Works every time.” She said as she moved to sit back down in her rocking chair.
“Gracias,” Pepa whispered, letting her cheek settle atop her hija’s head. “I don’t know why I didn’t think of it.”
Julieta shook her head. “We overthink things too much, I think. Sometimes, the best solución is the simplest.”
A comfortable silence fell over them both for a while then, neither of them feeling the need to say anything as their girls napped, but soon enough that silence was broken by a faint whimper. “Oh, you have to be kidding me,” Julieta muttered under her breath as she looked over at the basket her daughter was in, sighing when she spotted a tiny hand reaching up. She didn’t even have to look at her hermana to know that she was smirking. “One word from you, I swear…” She got up from her chair and walked over to the basket where, sure enough, her sweet girl was awake again. “Are you two plotting against us, amor, hmm? Is that what those babbles are?”
“I think you might be onto something there,” Pepa told her. “Ay, no, they’re going to turn into us.”
“Don’t say that,” She pleaded, dread in her eyes as she picked Isabela up. “We were nightmares growing up.”
“Mmm, but you got away with everything and Bruno and I were always the ones in trouble.”
“No, I got in trouble sometimes too.”
“Oh, name one time, hermana.”
“Well, there was that time when…” Julieta started before shaking her head as she sat down and sat her hija in her lap. “Oh, there was that time when I…no, I got away with that one too, didn’t I? Ay, I guess you’re right.”
Pepa beamed with pride. “Do you think I could get that in writing? You say it so little, I want it documented.”
Julieta made a face at her before they both chuckled and she brought her daughter close, placing a kiss on her head when she cuddled up to her and settled with a deep sigh. “I don’t care what they turn out like,” She said as she turned to Pepa again while running a hand along Isa’s back through her cardigan. “They are so perfect.”
“Mmm, they are,” Her hermana agreed, burying her nose in Lolita’s curls and breathing her in. “Perfect…”

I know this movie is recent-ish, but the lack of an Encanto series is still crazy to me.
Like, it doesn't even need crazy magical lore, it can be episodic, it's so simple:
Family dynamics not seen in the movie
Why doesn't Mirabel have a gift (theory of her being the next matriarch being the most obvious one)
Seeing the other rooms
Bruno's new interactions with the townspeople and the family
FERAL ISABELA!!!
Dolores and Mariano
Unexplored trauma with Dolores and Camilo, GET THEM THEIR SOLO SONGS!!!!
The dads' sides of the family
Abuela Alma trying to do better
Childhoods of the triplets
On that same note, how the couples met each other.
More on Alma and Pedro. Etc
And if you wanted new stuff, HAVE THEM OPEN THE ENCANTO TO LET MORE PEOPLE IN, new technology that Encanto doesn't have access to, new ideas and cultures - it can even bring drama if the new people try to do bad things and the family goes all x-men on them.
It's so many possibilities that if they never do it it's a damn shame.

The Cousins Discuss Some Gossip
Happens after this. The Madrigal cousins discuss about Chepe and in the end Camilo tomfoolery scares Bruno lol. God this comic took so long lol because of the amount of detail I like to put in.

The hc that their mamás never let them sit next to each other at church because they would keep giggling and not paying attention is still my fave thing in the whole world 😂 You know they were absolute MENACES when they were tiny but Julieta and Pepa couldn’t even complain because they were the same at their age 🤡

These two screenshot comparisons are VERY telling. Now, before I start, I want to make it clear: This is not me calling the Madrigals "evil" or anything like that, it's just an observation. Kind of a sad one but still a simple observation.
In the first shot, we see all of them listening to Alma's speech. All of staring up at the matriarch with attentiveness and reverence; at the same time, huddling together in closeness and vulnerability - Luisa's hand on Julieta's shoulder. Julieta and Camilo holding each other, Isabela and Dolore holding one another, and Agustin holding onto Dolores' shoulder. We see that they are tight knit and close family that have zero qualms about being affectionate with each other. But, then something happens...
Onto the second screenshot, their closeness doesn't change but their attention and attitudes shift. Why? They just witnessed Mirabel (whose ceremony failed) agreeing to help Antonio to his door. And they don't smile at Mirabel's sweet gesture even after shock dissipates. All of their reactions are either shocked (Camilo, Dolores, Agustin), concerned (Julieta), quiet understanding (Luisa), or quiet disapproval (Isabela, when asked about her reaction Jared Bush confirmed on Twitter that Isabela made that face because she thought Mirabel was going to mess up Antonio's night).
And given how Mirabel was positioned with Antonio, she most likely noticed the reactions of her family. And even though it's not said, I think it paints a clear picture of something even Mirabel most likely knows but doesn't say out loud: For all the talk about familial love, the Madrigals don't have the highest respect for Mirabel. I am NOT saying they don't love her, but they don't fully respect her.
