as someone whos hopelessly devoted to the workings of rick riordon i absolutely never understood percabeth

like,

they're literally 12, children, CANNOT LEGALLY DRIVE OR CONSENT TO SEX at the end of the og series (chalice of the gods) and niggas really out here shipping the fuck outta them

shit dig hard enough on a03 and there's prolly smut of the two of em

never understood it, like i get a cute lil mutual pining thing where they both like each other but a whole ass ship never made sense. like no, the two don't make babies. why? CUZ THEYRE BABIES THEMSELVES

okay to clear things up cs people are in the comments saying i don't know what a ship is (i'm literally a fanfic writer on here but okay)

i'm just saying that these are literally little kids in middle school. i'm not saying that middle school kids don't have relationships, but it's still weird. and from, i'm boutta geek out about this incredibly obscure topic i'm sorry, a developmental standpoint middle grade children are nowhere near psychologically ready to be in a relationship which is why it's extremely rare to see couples who have been together since middle school (that one episode of abbott elementary). if you go on tiktok and look for people who broke up with someone they were in a relationship with from middle school- high school, those breakups are traumatic

all breakups are traumatic in some way, but there have been several people who have developed traits of borderline personality disorder because they broke up with someone they had been romantically involved with since middle school.

also let's not forget how warped your view on intimate relationships go (fucking. imma say it the way you think about fucking is skewed). the people i've spoken to who broke up with their middle school partner in their older parts of high school have recounted just how awful their view on sex was, some have even pondered if they were asexual because they couldn't picture themselves up under anyone else.

like i get it, it's cute to see little kids who like each other, but most of this fandom are of age to drive, to study for the SATS/gsces, some are able to legally drink in the united states, or applying to college. these are little baby children that high school students and young adults should not be playing match maker for. ALSO WALKER SCOBELL IS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL/ HIS FIRST YEAR IN HS HE WAS BORN IN 2009.

anyway,

i get it, we all have head canons, but shipping two middle schoolers who a) may or may not have started puberty b) did not stay at one school for too long c) don't know trig formulas d) may or may not have had their first period/ voice dropped/ you get the picture.

SO

i don't understand percabeth as a whole romantic ship, but mostly as a fluffy little middle school flirty thing (prolonged eye contact, stealing hats, asking if they can hug/kiss at a certain time, etc.)

i love love love the concept of seaweed brain and wise girl, smartwater, percabeth, whatever, I THINK THEY'RE ADORABLE but i don't understand the draw of why people feel the incessant need to make it extremely romantic. like why why whyyyyyyy. can we js let them be kids, because lets be real a lot of the newer additions to this fandom only know about the show (and its okay we love you guys anyway its just that some of us have read the books too, its not required for you to love the show that you need to read the books) and are already talking about 'annabeth and percy need to just kiss already' no they don't. cs percy just lost his mom (i know something you dooonttttttt) and our cutie patootie annabeth is still lowkey a mystery (i'm guessing?? idk i haven't watched the show yet i think im gonna pirate it soon or smth, im js assuming because idk what point the show is at in relation to the first book), etc. can we maybe not make them a whole ass ship until the show is in relation to the last few books of the series. lets js let them be kids for now.

AND THIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT I DIDN'T LIKE WHEN THEY WERE AN ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIP IN THE LATER BOOKS OKAY ITS NOT TO SAY THAT im just saying that i didn't understand the concept of percabeth within the first few books because it was a little wonky to really really want two twelve year olds to be in a relationship. they're cute when its in the last few books but come on yall. lets not ship them yet. also report any smut you see of them that's not cool or rick riordon approved.

theyre still babies, even if some of the fandom has read all of the books and others didn't.

I was wondering if there was any term for uhh my kind of speaking stuff??? i really dont know how to talk about this topic bc i know very little on it so im really truly sorry if I use any terms wrong or say anything bad or offensive!!!! I'm just trying my hardest to explain the best I can

So I'm autistic (I think low needs??? Not entirely sure) and I know (a little) about non verbal and semi verbal and selective mutism and all that. I um. I was wondering if there was a term for my experience with all this??

I'm uh fully verbal most of the time. But sometimes when I get overwhelmed I have a hard time speaking. I can push out words but it's hard, but I can still manage to sound like a fully verbal person (maybe with slight hesitations in words). Like I said I can push out the words, but I'd much rather not speak or speak very little (i.e. if I'm overwhelmed and mom comes in my room and asks what I want for breakfast, I can force myself to say "I...want...cereal. Coco Puffs" or smth, but I'd much rather just not speak at all and just get up and point to the cereal box. I dont do that though because I dont want my mom to question why I'm not speaking, which would force me to speak more...) Also online when overwhelmed, like with speaking, I can push myself to type..um.. "correctly"? But I feel more comfortable typing...."incorrectly"?? I dont know how else to say it, but basically the difference between typing full sentences out like "I'm really uncomfortable right now, its so hot and uncomfortable and i'm overwhelmed and i want to stim but stimming just makes me warmer bc im moving around. I hate summer its so hot." and, quote from something I actually said once, "ICKY ICKY ITS TOO HOT ITS TOO HOT :(( im so overstimulated Stimmy doesnt help s +b@ becaus 3 it makes me warmer Icky icky icky icky I ahte hate Iss i hate Summer Its too w@z warm and and &u$bd uncomfy and make s me overstimmed especially when already overwhelmed an$d/or under pressure I hate this" like im rlly bad at explaining sorry but like. okok soo yk i'm dria 🩵 black / caribbean, around 5'1 (i promise im so close to 5'2 don't @ me haters will hate i drink my milk and eat my veggies) i have huge hair!! like very big hair, too many curls!! it's alot! i love reading, i write plenty of poetry, which is what i use most of my time to do — i lovelove r&b and early 2000s rap music. however, if u open my spotify rn and shuffle my liked songs it would go in order of hip hop, rap, afrobeats, classical music bcus my taste is all over the place. (i also keep a folder of edit audios for my own maladaptive daydreaming purposes lmao)

im rlly a baby blue girlie, fave flowers are tulips (idk my brain js thinks they look yummy), fave season is autumn ofc bcus rainy weather and i have an excuse to stay inside under my blankets 😭 fave animal would beee a black panther or a tabby cat! (my bby bella is a tabby lmao) i love vintage shows (rlly old noir films of all types of genres) i love cinema and visual art it stimulates me sm (im autistic btw i forgot to say mb) i've watched almost every wes anderson film in existence i love soft color palettes in film so bad <3

i enjoy watching old cartoons to relive my childhood nostalgia, jewelry (esp rings i never go anywhere without one or two on), rainy days, late night car drives, baggy shirts, scented candles, afrobeats n anything astronomy related.

im very much a social science n humanities junkie - yearning to be a clinical psychiatrist or complete my dream of teaching literature / psychology. i cry very easily (im js a crybaby istg) - in general im just very very emotional and more often than not i forget common sense and instinct are a thing bcus wtv i feel i just go with it - though i am extremely introverted and freak out when overstimulated in huge crowds and whatnot.

for the event im picking toji bcus that man is the love of my life bye ☹️ the epitome of sunshine and sunshine protector - tiny human and big scary guard dog ! in terms of our compatibility, we're so opposite it's insane! but we balance each other out well. sometimes i have to serve as toji's brain bcus this man is spending money he does not have on all sorts of things for me js cause i looked twice (my sister hced that he'd go below bankrupt buying me sanrio plushies and rings) he works mostly off instinct where i go completely off emotion so we butt heads alot in terms of decision making but he does not know how to tell me no, all i do is sigh once and HES DONE FOR.

i stress this man out like hes my full time babysitter pls

we acc spend alot of time having deep talks about the world and life in general, (i told him ab the backrooms lore and it messed w his head for weeks) which is a side of him he rarely shows to anyone (also he listens to me rant abt daily pop culture developments bcus he lowkey loves the celebrity drama) he's rlly protective, and even moreso bcus of how my anxiety gets. in a crowd this man is standing in front of me and blocking my view of everyone (he also subconsciously pulls me into his side when we're walking in public bcus my autistic ass will see one thing and wander off never to be found again) im always talking like talk talk talking and he pretends he isn't listening but he's literally able to repeat today something i mentioned two weeks ago - he's attentive, shows his love through actions rather than words. if i even make a face that gives away that im uncomfortable being somewhere, or my social battery is dead, hes taking me home no questions asked not a care as to who says what.

im an affection junkie - physical touch is my thing ! and hes so big! so im always pouncing on him for bear hugs and he acts so unimpressed and cocky abt it like "oh you missed me? im not goin anywhere relax" but he acc melts bcus when was the last time someone gave him affection?? he prob thinks im a figment of his imagination lolol

days off / dates would mainly be : window shopping, grocery runs, sitting in the park at sunset, indoor ramen dates n movie marathons and cuddles !!

being with toji is not always as seamless or easy as you make it look. He's gruff and protective and difficult and incredibly stubborn. like that time you two fought because he was ignoring what you were saying and he flat-out refused to acknowledge your demand when you called him out on it. to be fair, he'd come home after an eight-hour shift and you'd started talking his head off, but it wouldn't kill him to listen. he wasn't paying attention when you were talking about that new hello kitty cafe with the fun milkshakes and the mini donuts that you wanted to try. hell, he ended up falling asleep on your shoulder after brushing off your argument and as much as you wanted to remain angry at him, you'd softened immediately upon seeing his tired face, all eyebags and troubled frown. and he did make it up to you later by taking you to said cafe and proving that he had been listening, though when you brought it up to him, he pretended not to know what you were talking about. but deep down he cares for you and he's trying — you know he's trying and you don't want to make him feel bad for things he can't control. a lot of the concerns you should bring up to him, you don't — you want this relationship to be easy and safe. you want him to feel comfortable with you the same way that you feel comfortable with him. even if sometimes he comes home with a busted lip and bloody knuckles and sends your heart skidding against your ribcage. but what matters is that he comes to you first and he comes home to you. so you know that no matter what, no matter how he's feeling, if he thinks he can talk to you or not, he'll always come home to you. and even if you doubt his commitment sometimes, he knows that you're home to him and he'll do anything to keep it that way.

2 questions for you: a) when do you think the next edition of js will open for submissions? i was nervous to submit last time but im excited and want to submit for the next one, and b) i didnt preorder the first edition of js, but is it too late to order either an electronic or physical copy? i'm sorry if you've answered this before:')

i plan on making a post requesting submissions after spring break (so around late march) and then publish in may…i want to do it a little differently this time and give the option for people to submit either finished work whenever theyre ready, or to give a description of an idea for a new project in march and then have it done by may so that i can have a good idea of how many there will be ahead of time… the first edition of the journal and the manifesto can both still be ordered here junkiescholar.bigcartel.com and theyre made-to-order (so takes like 2 weeks for me to buy the covers + print the inside + assemble + ship)

My dudes... I don't know if I'm the last one to learn this, but I come bearing good news! Google's Apps Script is amazing and makes Spreadsheets & Slides so much more powerful!

Tumblr is hardly the best platform to talk about code on but this was a game changer! As a minor helper on @renegadepublishing's yearly exchange, my scripts let me keep up with the growing quantity of entries and while I only figured it out at the end of this year's labors, it will be so very, very, very helpful for next year's.

Will tuck further ravings under the cut but the short of it is that it (A) let me programmatically pull deets from AO3 to enrich final report and (B) let me programmatically fill the results slide show with data.

Coherently flowing prose often fail me when shifting to a technical discussion, so to break down the work:

this was all in JavaScript. I obviously love Kotlin more these days, but it felt painless/rather accessible being in JS

the primary 'key' passed around for the entries (when participents submitted updates and final entries) tended to just be the fic URL (plus gifter/giftee names) - a good UUID but carries no meta info

almost (tho not all) of the entries were hosted on AO3 which made programatic scraping possible

we definitely needed the author & fic name... which required visiting the page. And once you're on the page, why not grab more details? In the end we wound up scraping: title, author, last update, word count, fandom, rating. And while there's more one could collect, we lacked the space to visually display it along with the results. Remember-- the point is the typesetting!

Apps Script let you make URL requests [getContent]

I used the Cheerio library to process the page's contents and let me comb through it using jQuery. Link goes to GitHub page, which has the Script ID you'll need to import it in the Libraries section.

I found the Google Sheets APIs easy enough to read/work with -- just lots of arrays, really. Also, the quotas that you get seem generous to me (for a free product)

AO3 specific note : had to append "?view_adult=true" to the URLs if I wanted to bypass that check screen, but I also had to handle locked fic, which keep you at a reduced info lock screen. Be sure to test E rated & locked fic when drafting your script (Incognito Window is your friend)

Here is the Gist of the pictured script-- it was a 'round 2' edit where I went back and pulled Rating & Locked status : [LINK]

The above refers mostly to the Sheets side of things. The other most magical feature was the population of Slides w/ sheet data!

Notes as follows:

images are my current weakness-- had to go in later and adjust/layout/upload images manually. SUPER LAME. Next time I'm going to dig into pulling images from the drive...

I was able to embed links programmatically into the slides but it was VERY HACKY code. The generation of the PDF links was still a manual task, and while I imagine I could script that, sounds hairy (I want to avoid all things Auth)

The {{name_pattern}} was/is only a stylistic choice. Doing a find & replace on something so distinct is safest tho.

I did not use Alt Text on my things but I think going forward, it would be how I'd ID/address the non-string replacement actions (finding the right shape to anchor a URL link on was finicky the way I did it)

For next time:

using a script to pull tags/fandoms/pairings will make the gifter/giftee pairing process sooooo much smoother (so far it's been very manual!! Bless @aetherseer's tenacity!)

I need to figure out image imports/population of the slides... ignoring any aspect ratio/size issues

I HAVE A STORY OKAY so i have 2 houses that are litearlly acrosss the street from each other bc yeah guys my family js needed another house we have ms ppl living with us but this is the first time my mom brought both of their families over for a party since yeah its only been my 2 friends that came over not their family but my irls came over in the morning to my current house and then around like 6(?) all 3 of us including my family went to the new house to wait for their families to arrive and then like at 8 all 3 of our families came back to my current house right AND THE CAR RIDE WAS SO FUNNY 😭 we thought we needed extra space so i sat on one of my irls irl B. and my other irl irl A. WAS SITTING ON ME and like we did have space by the time we we're driving like there was a whole extra seat next to us but we all stayed sitting on top of each other and we even took pictures of us sitting on each other LMAO

me and irl B kept saying coquette to every little thing and also to everything Irl A kept doing and shes like 'atp you're coquette bc u call everything coquette' IT WAS SO FUNNY ISTG😭😭

im litealrly never going to forget yesterday like it was hella fun and we took so many .5 pics from my moms phone (crying in iphone 7 user whos ios updates come late) and we walked a little in the rain and took videos but ran back to the car/house/driveway before our moms saw and killed us for leaving HAHHAS

ABC diet day 4: ✅ I had 440 calories (most of which were in the morning :/) which I’m estimating to 400.

i did get surprised w cake bc it’s my moms birthday. I had some but tried to not eat much and all that stuff so I’m not logging it bc a) there’s no accurate way to log it and b) I don’t wanna decide “fuck it the day is ruined anyway” yk? So I’ll js leave it there tell me what I guys think.

Im kinda dissapointed bc k gained one pound yesterday (it was definitely all water weight tho hence why I’m drinking mad water) so I js hope we can lose that. I hate that I’m at 127; I can’t believe js a month ago I was complaining over begin 117.
