panem's possible asian diaspora: how being asian might add nuance to district 4 & 7 characters.
i'm not trying to discredit the actors that portrayed these characters, nor am I saying that these experiences are universal to asians everywhere. as an asian-american thg fan, it's just interesting to see how my experiences (again, not universal) could apply to some characters and explain their actions. they're not canonically asian, you can imagine them as you want. this is just for funsies! it started off as a fun little, "lol what if finnick was filipino?" then spiraled out of control.
topics discussed:
seniority and the seablings
filial piety and duty to community in thg
treech, odesta, and the model minority myth
asian f*tishization and finnick odair
cw: racism, s*xualization, and death are mentioned but not entirely fleshed out and in detail.
Let’s start off with geography!
In the official map of Panem, we see that districts Four and Seven encompass both California and Washington, respectively — two states with some of the highest populations of Asian-Americans in the modern-day west coast. It’s not far-fetched to believe that there are some Asian influences there just as there are hints of Katniss’ indigenous roots in the books (a headcanon that inspired this one).

or... I'm just projecting!!! idk 😁
sorry for the censoring. I tried posting this on tiktok, and they took it down, so now I'm a little paranoid!
AGAIN (sorry, I just hate causing too much debate) I'M NOT SAYING THEY'RE ASIAN. I just think asian characters in thg would be neat--

I'm not having a good day so neither will you, so please remember:
• there might still be people who used Finnick when he was 14 in The Capitol who went unpunished
• Gale's name doesn't make Katniss smile anymore
• Haymitch and Effie didn't actually end up together and he probably never saw her again
• Madge died and will never get her happy ending
• Gale will never go to the woods he used to hunt in
• Haymitch has no family and did not recover from alcoholism
• Johanna was alone when she got back to 7 and probably never got over her hydrophobia and will sink into deep depression and alcoholism and die alone
• Enobaria was also probably tortured like Peeta, Johanna and Annie but nobody ever mentions it just like they don't mention the fact that most/all of her friends and family are dead
• one day Katniss will have to explain to her kids where auntie Prim is
• Katniss and Peeta got a boring ending but were too exhausted to search for a better one
• Beetee had to watch Wiress, his wife, die and most likely will never recover
• Lavinia, the red haired Avox girl, had the most traumatizing life than any other character and yet still died with no one even knowing her name
• Haymitch lost Chaff, his best friend
• Finnick died not knowing Annie was pregnant
• Pollux heard Castor's screams as he was getting ripped apart and Annie heard the cries of other tributes as they were drowning around her
• Tigris saw Lucy Gray in every rainbow

i hc that katniss and peeta move out of their home in victors village and build their own cozy little home
it had never occurred to me, but yes!! i agree!!
their house in the victors' village is filled with memories, living there suffocates them with sadness and melancholy. being some of the few ‘lucky ones’ who could return to their district and continue their lives after the rebellion burns them with guilt. katniss especially feels like she's living with the ghost of prim, haunted by her old stuff. every day, she stumbles upon another one of prim’s belongings - a comb, or her old and worn out teddy bear- and finds herself crumbling on the floor, unable to let go of the immense sadness weighing on her.
after months of merely existing in automatic mode, peeta finally suggests they move out. katniss doesn’t take it well at first. how could she abandon her old home? how could she leave behind the memories of her life? what would prim say? but deep down, she knows she needs to distance herself from this place. living in that house only fuels the pain scorching her soul. after (not) a lot of convincing and some heartfelt discussions, katniss agrees, and they decide to start from zero and build their own home. it is what prim would've wanted her to do.
they choose a place not very far from the woods, as they love going to the previously-hidden lake, but also not very far from the other houses. katniss’ first condition was that she wanted to live near haymitch so he could visit them often, accompanying each other in their new lives.
peeta spends the first months doing the hard, physically demanding work, building the walls and installing the windows, while katniss dedicates her time to less physically demanding but still labor-intensive activities, such as installing the floor. katniss offered to be the one who painted the house, while peeta installed the plumbing, but he insisted that they do it together, bonding and laughing as katniss painted his face with lavender-colored paint and started a paint war.
at night, when they lay on the mattress on the floor of their almost-empty house, the conversations slowly change from the horrendous aftermath of the war to plans of their future filled with hope. now all they could talk about was whether they need more than one bedroom, what color the kitchen is going to be, and whether haymitch would appreciate it if they invited him to spend some time and bake every weekend.
after their home is done, peeta's first action is to plant some primroses in the garden. they occasionally host dinners for friends that are around. haymitch is always there, and gets in an extremely good mood whenever effie joins, trying to act nonchalantly, but acting was never a talent of his. johanna is also a frequent visitor, staying for long periods of time and spending her days teasing and annoying them. annie visits with her son less than she would have wanted, but she knows if she ever decided to move to twelve, she would be around people who love her. none of the guests ever leaves without a dessert made by the couple.

since it’s ✨ lesbian visibility week ✨ (shout out to all the lesbians i love yall)
just IMAGINE being the lesbian sister of finnick. u telling him, him being supportive (obviously) and THEN asking him “so is your friend johanna… yk” and once jo finds out she is not only flattered (the crush is v much mutual) but her being her, she’ll prob make some smartass remark like “damn does being gay just run in the family?”
OH MY GOD ANON YES!! (also happy lesbian visibility to all my fellow girl kissers!!)
finnick would be the most supportive person ever. he's wrapping you in a tight hug and saying that nothing would ever make him love you any less. he will go all out - he's buying you a pride flag and little pride badges and he'll spend a small fortune buying you crystals (because annie says that's what the lesbians are into, right?). and then you're ruining the sweet moment by just blurting out "hey... johanna is a lil fruity, right?"
johanna is so smug when she finds out that not only have you came out (she's called it from the day she met you) but also that her crush is reciprocated. she's being such a smartass to finnick. "how's it feel to know that i'm gonna bang your sister" 😭 she's so uninged i love her.

i think something that elevates the hunger games franchise is not just the quality of writing but the integrity of it. tbosas isn’t just a cash-grab by suzanne collins in the age of sequels and reboots (though i won’t pretend that didn’t play a part), it’s a character study of the main antagonist with a different structure than the main trilogy. and importantly, it doesn’t just re-hash the same old themes and beats the main trilogy had, it expands on not just the world of the hunger games but the themes as well, it actually has something new to say about the trilogy’s themes about class, capitalism, power, and control, in a way that couldn’t be explored with the main story because the protagonist of that story simply did not have access to the world that’s being explored in tbosas.
i understand the people who call for books/movies to be made about haymitch, finnick, johanna, different years of the games — we love those characters and want to see more of them! i’d kill for a novella on finnick’s days mentoring tributes, or katniss’s parents falling in love. but at the end of the day we probably wouldn’t be very satisfied with those stories being fleshed out if they had absolutely nothing new to say about the world, they’d be enjoyable, but not as interesting and engaging as tbosas has been.

In the epilogue of Mockingjay, Katniss only refers to her children as 'the boy' and 'the girl'. We never learn their real names. Throughout her life, Katniss has never really been allowed privacy or the ability to make many of her own decisions. Whether this was caused by the living conditions of the Seam and having to constantly provide for Prim and their mother, or by the fact that she was forced into the scrutiny of the public eye when she was reaped/volunteered and became the face of the rebellion- The Mockingjay.
So then all of this passes, she and Peeta are living together in District 12 in the Victor's Village, and they are finally allowed to choose how they want to live. After 15 years, she decides that she's ready to have kids. They can be raised in a safe environment with no Games, no threats. So the one choice she makes at the end is to keep their names from us, the audience. The one thing that gives us our identity before anything else. The one thing that, essentially, makes us who we are (also Suzanne is so meticulous with picking names throughout the series, so it would be special to Katniss and Peeta). She decides that that's only for her and her family to know.
We, who have literally seen every inch of her life from the reaping up until now, are being told that no, we don't get to see parts of her life without her permission anymore. And it always makes me so emotional. Like yes! Take back your life! Rest. Live. Love. But on YOUR terms and no one elses.
(I posted this on my TikTok acc @narniachrons as well. It wasn't stolen, I swear!)

Thinking again about how Suzanne esentially subverted the "beloved famous man that is actually a horrible person in real life" with Finnick, who is the complete opposite of that.
Finnick has this whole image costructed around him by the people that abused him for years: the Capitol's darling, their golden boy, the sex symbol of Panem, the man that has countless lovers but leaves them constantly and doesn't look back etc. And you would expect, initially, to meet a man that retains at least a part of that persona in his day to day life. But Finnick doesn't, not even one bit.
You see instead a man that is deeply in love and completely devoted to the one woman he quite literally adores, a man that protects Mags, his old mentor and his mother figure, as much as he can, a man that wouldn't leave Johanna behind, a man that gathers whatever strenght he has left to speak publicly about the abuse inflicted upon him at the government's hands; the opposite of what the Capitol's media and reputation made him out to be.

I think the saddest character in the Hunger Games franchise is Mags Flanagan. She is as almost as old as the Games themselves. She won the 11th Hunger Games. Then, for the entirety of her life, for over 60 years, she was forced to relieve that same trauma year after year, trying to train kids, save kids, just like herself. Over time Mags watched the Games get more brutal, more “entertaining”. She watched her community sacrifice two children over and over again. There is nothing Mags can do but bare it. She desensitizes herself. She reaches her 80s. She is old and almost free of the pain; the trauma has formed a callous. But Mags will continue to work until she dies. This is all she has ever known.
Then, the 75th Quarter Quell is announced and Mags is back on the stage for the first time in 60 years. A reaping outfit. Her name in a glass bowl. The tension, the dread, the silence before the reading of the name -- Annie Cresta. But to Mags, it never mattered the name that was picked. She knew her hand was going up. And for the first time since she was a child, she is back in the Games.
During her the 11th Hunger Games, Mags was caged in the zoo with the other tributes. This time, she is presented with a gorgeous suite, the best food the Capitol has to offer, and the finest clothes. The 11th Hunger Games were televised on a blurry screen; now, all of Panem is going to watch her every move. Mags knows she isn’t going to win. But, as she spends the last weeks of her life walking in the shoes of every child she couldn’t save, as the trauma of her own Games is as alive and present as it has ever been, she knows that, for the first time in her long life, she was able to truly save at least one person from this fate.
Hope is a funny thing. Mags picked apart the Capitol’s logic and the heart of the Games long ago. She knows why they allow one victor, and how every tribute goes into the arena hoping its them. She knows this is unrealistic; all of Panem knows that only one will come out alive. But even as she rises into the ticking clock of the arena, that stubborn feeling flutters in her chest. Maybe she will get out of there with the rest of the rebels. But if not --
Mags looks to Johanna. To Katniss and Peeta. To Finnick. Her hope for them is stronger, steadier, than the hope for her own self-preservation. She looks into the cornucopia of weapons, the familiar ring of twenty-four tributes, and allows herself to dream that maybe, maybe, this is it. This will be the last one.
For the first time in over half a century, Mags won’t be watching the Games from the comfort and safety of a faraway room. This time, she has the chance to help directly. To be able to protect others with more than just a parachute full of supplies. To have the ability to save another life. To save multiple lives. To save all the future children of Panem.
The gong sounds.
Mags smiles.
She dives into the water.

the hunger games has been my roman empire since i read when it when i was 10 and here are all of my smaller empires bc this has always been my favourite series ever:
the tributes being treated to a life of luxury both as a “last meal” sort of thing and as a way to make them more vulnerable for the games. keeping them well fed before the games so the starvation hits harder
peeta repeatedly calling himself a mutt after katniss does :(
katniss’ ptsd
katniss being such an unreliable narrator
when cato realised he’s just as much of a toy as the rest of the kids
when gale says he should’ve volunteered in peeta’s place. NOT for peeta, not to save him the trauma, the injuries or his torture, and not to save katniss and to be there for her, PURELY bc he knew that getting hurt would get her attention.
GALE GETTING MAD AT KATNISS FOR KISSING SOMEONE TO STAY ALIVE. EVEN 10 YEAR OLD ME WAS LIKE ??
peeta’s “real or not real” and how easily katniss accepts it as his way of recovery
how perfect katniss’ character was. i was a little girl and i wanted to be exactly like her when i grew up. she wasn’t the cliche “doesn’t need anyone accepts this specific guy that will always save her” she saved peeta, and some times peeta saves her
probably the overdramatic english lit nerd in me but katniss’ hair going from intricate braids to messy ponytails
(tw sex assault) in the books katniss was terrified that peeta was going to be r&ped, for some reason that’s always stuck with me
what happened to finnick
how well written and realistic the books were. peeta loses his leg to the infection, katniss loses her hearing in one ear, finnick suffers from extreme ptsd and it shows in district 13, peeta not being an easy fix. he still suffers years later, but he slowly pieces himself back together. Johanna’s anger, people often don’t like the fact that ptsd DOES make you angry, haymitch’s backstory and effie’s growth.
the mutt’s have the dead kids eyes in the first games
