So I have a shit ton of Twst fankids btw! They kinda swim around in my brain but only a few ppl I know have gotten the info dumps lmao

Skye was the first one I made I think (actually it might’ve been Rico (florid) but eh oh well who’s counting)

But yes this is Skye Ashengrotto!

They’re my older Jamiazu kid, I do have two. The younger one is my octo boy Akram :) he’s funny I wanna pinch his cheeks but he’s not the point here

So Skye! It feels weird publically infodumping abt my OCs like wtf am I even supposed to put here

They’re a half mer, which do work a lil different than normal mers in my lore. Half mers can transform without a potion but it’s still a long and generally painful process, esp going from mer to human. I kind of switch between calling them a snake mer and a naga but there’s lore there- Nagas exist in my lore outside of sea snake mers, there are also fully terrestrial Nagas. So the terrestrial nagas wouldn’t be considered snake mers but the sea snake nagas would be a type of mer while also still being a naga ITS CONFUSING DONT ASK (actually do. Ask everything so I can roll more of my fankids out like marbles)

Skye was created by a spell, I haven’t quite worked the details out 😔 but Jamil is part gorgon in my lore which is why they have the hair snakes which isn’t a typical naga trait. And to elaborate on the hair snakes: they are alive, the one w the bigger stripes is Flora and the smaller stripes is Jett. Skye can communicate w them telepathically and their eyes glow which is kinda neat. They’re kind of Skye’s version of floatsam and jetsam (unless u count Rico (florid) and Lilac (treyjade) which is like their ver of the twins- IDK ITS COMPLICATED)

idk what else to put here so LETS THROW SOME FHARACTER DYNAMICS YEAH and also mentioning some of my other fankids! They all have profiles (except my Malleus kid I’m sorry Aihan I can’t think of a design for you) but I’m probably gonna save those for another post-

So jamiazu in my lore live in the Shaftlands in a beachfront place and also live pretty close to Treyjade, however Florid live in the Queendom. The octatrio and their spouses is a close group so they’re essentially a big family. My treyjade kids are Maren (older) and Lilac, then my Florid kids are Rico (older) and the twins Mary and Eliza.

Skye saw Lilac more as a kid cuz they lived so close together but also saw Rico a lot when flrd would visit or they’d go to visit them. Rico is an agent of chaos and Lilac is Skye’s 2nd in command so their dynamic on a surface level is pretty similar to the octatrio, but there’s still a lot of differences once u get into the meat of it. Tho Lilac and Rico are Skye’s best friends and basically like siblings to them.

Outside of jamiazu Skye is particularly close with Jade, they share a love of tea :) he’s their cool but also slightly unsettling uncle

THEN THERES SHENZI- Shenzi is my younger kaliruggie kid and I am not gonna get into her here bcuz she rlly needs her own post w all her trauma but good lord these two do not like each other. Shenzi’s really nice but she’s not quite as nice as Kalim so after about 5 months of trying and failing to befriend Skye in their freshman year she just gave up and now their relationship is nothing but hostile (which was not helped when Shenzi and lilac started dating)

Speaking of that tho- so my idikei kids :) Ember (named after the pokemon attack) is the older one and he’s basically that “Jock idia can’t hurt you he’s not real Jock idia:” thing as a person he has the Fire hair n shit but he plays basketball and is heavily extroverted but no one gives a shit abt Ember this is NOT ABT HIM this is abt his sister! Her name is Zelda because you know Idia would name his daughter Zelda- she got all of Idia’s social anxiety lmao. She’s extremely shy and there’s a total of like 4 people in the school she can actually talk to without melting into a small stain on the floor. She’s an Skye are both in board games club and sometime in early freshman year she falls on her ass and knocks over a bunch of stuff which Skye happens to witness and cue the most awkward interaction known to man bcuz Skye can’t talk to pretty girls and Zelda can’t talk to ANYONE but they end up walking to the mirror hall together afterwards which becomes a routine. Except they’re both awkward as fuck take like almost two fucking years to get together bcuz neither of them are gonna do anything abt it BUT THEYRE VERY CUTE!! I love them

Also my ashengrotto siblings are very wholesome I need to write some stuff w them- Akram is a little shit and he loves pissing Skye off but at the end of the day he admires them and Skye loves their brother a lot :)

Anyway good lord I’ve yapped too much okay OH YEAH Skye has a Russian blue cat named Mariana who they just fucking found on the side of the road and thought it was a mouse so for like 2 years Azul thought Skye was gonna eat the cat

I’m about to ramble why I think Rei works better as a Bottom than Kazuki is. They might as well switch, but this post might not be going deeper on that. As well as to clarify this is from a shipper pov.

Many people dislike Bottom Rei just because He has a cold attitude and resemblances the stereotypical father figure. But also because they want to break the well-known: “shorter and slimmer grumpy guy” over-used BL troupe. I do understand that. However, at doing that, many other fall in the cliché of placing Kazuki as the bottom just because he enjoys doing activities stereotypically associated with women, such as cooking, cleaning or being fond of children. Which is, I think, a very sexist argument and I’m glad the writers are doing a great not, amazing job with this character. He is very comfortable with his colorful yet masculine style, which doesn’t only display on his outfits but also in his furniture choices (because yeah, at this point it’s canon he made almost all the decoration in Rei’s flat). But at the same time, has a feminine spot, because he literally choose almost all of Miri outfits and wow, they are very cute and stylish.

I don’t care if they themselves call him “The mom”, because is more like a joke about this specific topic, more like: “let’s make a male character that can break gender rolls without making him act or look girly, but adding many troupes that people will laugh about because they remind them a mother figure and many situations they themselves have gone through. Let’s just show the world that men doesn’t have to be pleased with helping the minimum in the house or when taking care of the children, where both parent should be doing equally.” Coming back to Rei, in my opinion him being the bottom might even deep the plot concerning his OFF and ON modes and all about the Suwa family legacy: His OFF mode represents everything his father despites and works as a antonym of the “ very masculine and elegant cold-blooded hitman”. Where being placed in a submissive position is just unacceptable for the image of Superiority and dominance a future Boss must display. I will always see the Father-son conversation in chapter 8 as subtext of a homophobic Father and his gay son. (Or at least that’s what you can see on media). All about continuing the legacy is literally Shigeki telling Rei to have blood-related children of his own with of course a high class girl that might as well be involved in their world and share their vision, like the daughter of an associated gang. Just for this old piece of sht to discover that his own blood might actually prefer other men company. Which is also implied in the scene when he talks sht about Kazuki. Just for it to be even more suspicious when Rei immediately defended him with such emotion in his voice. (he even refers Kazuki by his name). Miserably destroying his façade about hadn’t made any personal attachments. At that point it was clear to me his father didn’t bite a bit of what Rei had said.

I also hold the headcanon that Rei took after his mother, and my as well be a reason for his father being so cruel to him, especially when he was younger and the resemblance was stronger. Plus adding the fact that, even though he see many of Kazuki’s plans as dumb or stupid, he goes along with them, even when it’s obvious he could reduced him at any moment, he lets Kazuki handle him around and invade his personal space. This guy is touch-starved and enjoys being taken care of and seem pretty comfortable having someone else taking the lead, although he might first die before admitting it.

Just to finish this mess, apart from the mother – malewife jokes, there is nothing that can convince me of Kazuki being the bottom. Yeah, these are anime clichés, but even between all the broken ones, I feel the staff did saved the physixal ones (height difference, body shape), plus the fact that Kazuki is the only one to be shown interested in being in relationships where he tops (obviously with women). Or when his relationship with Rei and Miri is compared as his with Yuzuko and the unborn baby. Of course Rei was also compared with his mentor, where Kazuki might as well resembled his wife. But chapter 7 did went deeper with the comparisons.

Oh I have. So many thoughts. You asking abt it even made me get up off my ass and draw again. Putting everything under the cut to avoid having a mile long post.

When I first had the idea I really struggled on who was a weapon/meister but after deciding on wanting to pair ruikasa/emunene up I was like tsukasa and emu need to be the meisters bc 1) it fits with them being the founding duo of wxs 2) I really wanted nene to be a gun 3) fitting tsukasa’s goals into the SE universe worked better if he was a meister. I elected to make rui a whip first and then I realized I could fit a bloodborne reference in there and reference becoming potatoes with the cane. I’m not entirely satisfied w the first pass at designs for the universe (not super close to the SE aesthetic, I cannot draw guns, I’m not very good at character design, etc) but i kind of tried to pull inspiration from:

- tsukasa and emu’s happy Phoenix costumes (split colors on tsukasa’s coat, tsukasa’s boots, the corset/bell sleeves/little cape thingie for emu)

- for tsukasa specifically: piano (b&w colors and stupid long coat tails), his second wxs costume

- emu: bc I drew her last and it was getting late I did less searching and more winging it but I did try to combine the style of her wxs costumes (shoes, dress, striped socks) & general darker Lolita (for lack of a better word) fashion.

- nene: her gaming event card (weird energy ball device thing? Which I would imagine functions similar to dtk’s shooting soul wave lengths thru the thompsons)

- rui: his ugly ass coat (fond) he wears as his first wxs costume. Also becoming potatoes cane handle thing. Him being a trick weapon (bloodborne term, essentially a weapon that can switch between two forms) also kind of lines up w him being a tech genius.

Ok done talking abt the designs onto the in universe stuff

- not basing any au story off the soul eater plot bc it didn’t work out very well (too many pjsk characters) (going with the main story wxs plot w a soul eater spin. Kinda. Gonna have to think abt that a bit.) but if I did mafuyu > crona, miku & the kagamines > dtk and the thompsons. Would that make cfm lord death. Emu would fill a similar role to maka with mafuyu in that situation but in general (besides the surface level similarities btwn tsukasa and black star) nene is too different from soul, emu is way too different from maka, and rui is literally NOTHING like tsubaki so I can’t justify just swapping out emunene/tsukasa with soul&maka/black star&tsubaki. No equivalent to that fucking cat in this universe. & the pjsk characters get to wear clothes when they’re in the weird place weapons’s bodies go when they’re transformed.

- idk maybe the regular soul eater plot is happening/will happen/has happened but this is the Japan branch (oceania branch in canon?).

- vocaloids are professors (not the kagamines. Forever babies.) but if there needs to be a lord death equivalent making that miku would be so funny. Also the normal vocaloid personalities and not the WXS ones for conveniences sake. Uhhh first thoughts for M/W would be meister miku, weapon meiko, meister kaito, luka can go either way tbh, kagamines are both weapons but are each other’s meister.

- similar to how rui did shows on his own for a really long time I think he was his own meister for a while (like Justin Law was). He doesn’t have many souls bc dwma in this universe at least pretends to give a fuck abt student safety so they don’t want to send him out alone on anything dangerous (despite his talent) and he can’t resonate soul wave lengths with most ppl bc they don’t get him. He ended up giving up on finding a meister when he was younger bc of this & just worked really hard on his own. He experiences a similar isolation from his peers that dtk did (ppl find him intimidating/envy at his skill/etc).

- equivalent of him transferring in to kamikou (? Spelling) second year is the kamishiros spending ~10 years in America. He’s still childhood friends w nene he just moved away after they drifted apart and then came back. Mizuki probably did something similar just 2 keep the mizuki & rui connection still there.

- tsukasa’s SE universe goal is to be the best meister - he wants to protect & help people (inspired by saki. I’ll get to that) but the equivalent of tsukasa forgetting he wanted to make ppl smile & believing he just wanted fame would be tsukasa believing he wants to be the best meister for fame/power.

- saki’s chronic illness is a result of black blood due to an incident w a kishin egg monster when she was younger. I think she would be a weapon but along with the canon typical chronic illness symptoms (not erasing those) she struggles for a long time w controlling her ability to change in and out of weapon form. Tsukasa & her *could* have been a m/w pair & have compatible soul wave lengths but 1) he’s overprotective and I think he realized he would not be able to fight without being too scared of getting her hurt 2) saki’s illness means she can’t really enroll in the dwma (yet. She gets there eventually.)

- nene was in the not classes before the plot picks up bc she didn’t think she had what it took to be a weapon. In universe equivalent to her forgetting her lines would maybe be freezing when she was supposed to transform during an important test when she was younger? Not baby age like in canon (bc I know the DWMA likes child soldiers but 7ish is a bit much even for them) but old enough to be taking classes & old enough to be put into not classes as a result. Im not reading SE NOT! to understand how those classes work though so thank god she gets out of those classes

- nene *is* a really powerful weapon she just lacks the confidence and struggles to resonate with people (& unlike rui she can’t wield herself)

- on that note emu can resonate with just about anyone but she hasn’t found anyone that felt right yet, and Tsukasa needs someone who can keep up w the intensity of his soul wave length and hasn’t found anyone who can do that yet.

- ^ similar to tsukasa being a piano prodigy or whatever in canon tsukasa *is* a really good meister, he just needs a really good weapon. Bc his peers would need more training to get to that level

- I toyed with making emu dtk adjacent (daughter of death) (bc PXL -> DWMA) but that would be too complicated with her brothers/dad/grandpa so I disregarded it. Maybe I’ll come back to it. I think it would make more sense for emu to come from a long line of really talented meisters so she grew up training for the job and running around the dwma.

- emu approaches tsukasa and is like we should work together!!! We’ll do better on missions and be able to take down harder kishin & maybe witches!! & he’s like sure why not every star needs a sidekick (obnoxious laugh) even though emu could kick his ass without breaking a sweat (in line with canon). & like the angel she is emu is like (ignores his pre main story dickheadedness) wonderhoy!! (Deathhoy?) okie dokie we need to find weapon partners then!! (bodily drags him to class)

- tsukasa sees rui training on his own and is like wow he’s really talented! Fitting for a future star like me! & approaches him to ask if they can pair up. Rui is like on the condition that you can find my friend a partner in your class (wants nene out of the not classes bc he thinks she’s far beyond that skill level). Emu jumps on the idea and is introduced to nene who is placed in the higher level courses to accommodate this partnership. Idc if that can’t happen in SE canon I think the Otoris have a lot of sway and any potential issues w nene being less powerful (not the case but it’s the assumption made abt not students) can be made up by emu’s skill.

- emu is instantly very taken with nene and they resonate well. I know what u are dot jpg. Rui & tsukasa can resonate but struggle to unlock their full potential (similar to soul and maka struggling with using the witch hunter form) bc tsukasa needs to realize what his real motivations are.

- tsukasa assumes nene has a low skill level at first (similar to his issues w nenerobo. God I wish I could think of a way to fit nenerobo in this au. sorry nenerobo) but is proven wrong when emu wields her.

- equivalent to the climax of the wxs main story in this is nene freezing again during an important mission and the group losing an important target -> tsukasa gets mad and yells at her -> rui fights w tsukasa over this and tells him that he’ll never be a good meister if he cares more about fame and power than people.

- tsukasa chats w the death scythe kaito & realizes the Error Of His Ways -> emu is considering dropping out bc she feels that she fucked up all of their futures as weapons/meisters by putting this into motion but tsukasa has the heart to heart with emu and they agree to continue being a team -> emu and nene partner back up -> they approach rui who has gone back to working solo and he refuses to partner back up w tsukasa

- idk what a good equivalent to the lonely alchemist show would be. Tsukasa and rui need to resonate & work together to help emunene because they’re in peril or something? & rui through the resonance realizes that tsukasa is genuine? Some sort of hand wavey plot device is used to resolve everything.

- I think that emu & rui and nene & tsukasa are also able to resonate and they do occasionally switch it up just for funsies. Emu and rui bc they just get along very well and nene & tsukasa argue with each other but can still function as a team.

- I don’t think that rui & nene can resonate because. Put down the pitchforks please. *Because* similar to their dynamic in pjsk despite their bond and their care for each other there’s a lot of baggage that needs to be worked through. Too many things left unsaid. Etc. they could probably achieve resonance later on but there’s not really a need to given that they’re both weapons and both have meisters.

- Rui thinks it’s a great training exercise to fight tsukasa “how do you expect to get better if you don’t try fighting against a weapon without a weapon… I’m just trying to help you… (fake crying)” “I’m already good at fighting without a weapon!! This is never going to be relevant knowledge anyways!!! You just want to fight me because you think it’s fun!!!!!!” “(switching manipulation tactics) Someone who wants to be a star would want to be prepared for any situation no matter how small the chance is of it happening” “hm…that’s true… ok let’s do it!!”

- cut to them in the nurses office. This is a weekly occurrence.

- emu also thinks it’s good practice to use tsukasa as moving target practice but this is less dangerous and more just continuing tsukasa’s never ending torment (he is a willing participant in said torment mind you)

- like in canon emu pulls nene out of her shell and hypes her up constantly which is huge in getting nene to have more confidence in herself and her abilities. It’s also incredibly helpful to have a meister who will never judge her for freezing and will always meet her halfway.

- also like in canon nene is very helpful with reeling emu in. She’s a very helpful voice of reason/impulse control but one that understands that even if emu’s ideas are unconventional they still have merit (even if they need to be refined a little)

- similar to the soul eater main cast having the self preservation skills of very small stupid suicidal animals hell bent on getting themselves injured or killed (Liz excluded), emu and Tsukasa are very prone to charging in to a situation w/out thinking. Tsukasa is more reasonable but unfortunately his weapon parter is not and rui usually cajoles tsukasa into doing stupid shit. Nene is suffering.

- maybe someday I’ll design rui & nene if I ever go back and refine these designs but I’m really lazy.

I haven’t posted most of the stuff I’ve written with him in it but I have written a few fics ^^ My favourite thing to do when writing him is just going batshit insane with my writing style. I like writing a ton of run-on sentences and switching between narrative and thoughts in random places. Idk I just like it when a character’s mental state lets me do cool stuff in the writing :D

As for stuff I don’t like uhhh, I guess keeping him in character can be pretty difficult sometimes

(i wasn't sure at first if i would make these posts again this year (like.. get a new bit bro) but ultimately i do think they're helpful for me so i'll stick w it for now)

i don’t remember much about persona 3 from playing it 15 years ago. basically all i remember is 1) being obsessed with akihiko 2) sobbing like a baby when i finished it @ 2 am 3) the crackly, fuzzy quality of my old tube tv

anyway i also don't remember writing much of st elmo's fire bc i was so inside it the whole time. i did think more about structure for both fics, i think that's something i'm going to focus on more this year

sidenote: i read chuck palahniuk's consider this in jan which was a great read on its own and also gave me lots to think about re: writing, and influenced me/my thinking for both of these fics

additional sidenote: coming to terms w the fact that the style of writing i enjoy most + would like to imitate works best in first person but i do not want to write or read first person fanfiction

for the first time i wrote drafts/outlines of almost every scene in my notes app then wrote them out fully in docs, which it turns out is a good way to do things

so. this is my attempt at revitalizing a small part of old romanian culture via tungel.hell. also goes for the near&far eastern versions of this, of which i was able to find nothing of (at least in english) online as well

i have not been able to find pictures of either of these hairstyles or even their less complex variations past the early 1930s. perhaps this is still done somewhere in huneduara, but it escapes me

now, firstly, i wanna say i originally learned how to twist by going to an african hair salon; so shoutout to the two congolese women who taught me. they couldn't figure out how the top part was done either but they were v sweet lol

these are twist braids, crochet braids, they have several names. i only know that the ones on the right were called cuarne, "horns", in romanian. this is one of the better and more clear tutorials i have found for how to twist. its pretty easy and fast, once you get the hang of it

to start: I recommend heavily conditioning your hair and scalp the night before if youre planning on keeping them for days/weeks, and oiling/moisturizing it before you start braiding. I dont know what oil they used back in the day (perhaps animal), but I use both argan oil and a pretty oily leave in conditioner. however, this depends on hair type, u want your hair to absorb it; if your hair or hands are too slick it will make it more difficult.

the way the begginings of the braids are done - the way it looks like the hair is flat until them - is like this. i made them bigger so its easier to see, but once you get the sections of hair thin enough (vertically), you cant see any skin between them anymore. you can start to twist from the very top (using the bottom/lower strand to pull the hair to the scalp), or start with a 3 way part and quickly switch to two (might look a bit different/flatter). change the direction of the twist when you change sides

the ones on the left are straight down; the ones on the right are done at an angle twoards the back (ca şi cuarnele). the ones in the top left photo are angeled twords the front, center forehead initially. old photos show there were several styles floating around, soo uhh have fun w it

how to keep them: chances are if youre going to spend hours upon hours doing this youre not gonna want to take them out the next day. if you have tight curly hair, or coarse, they're likely to stay better. even if not, once you get the twisting down right, they'll stay quite well (the braids can look "right" but not actually be; the way to tell is if when you let go, it barely comes undone/spins. tbh this is one of those skills you develop w time). generally, the smaller and tighter you make them, the more likely they are to keep. you can of course tie them w small elastics, but the smaller they are, it becomes a nightmare and closing one takes longer than making it. something ive found works quite well is: when you near the end, split the hair in 3 parts and do a regular braid, as small, tight, and for as long as you can (no this isnt good for your ends). by the bottom the braid is already small enough that the difference can't be seen, but it will close it much better. (there are also ways to make knots at the bottom of braids out of hair but ive never been good at this). hair spray or gel also kinda work (and uhh i think maybe either sealing them w ice cold or boiling water, or using a hair iron, but i havent tried these)

hair damage& care: this ⬇️ is how the hair looks the morning after i took out the half-assed ones i did for this post. as u can probably guess, when you do this small and tight, and keep them in long, these strands get quite compact. now, if you did this carefully and correctly, your hair wont be tangeled, just twisted, and youll be able to take them out without damaging your hair by gently rolling them between your fingers, starting at the botttom, in the opposite direction. dont attempt to use a comb, or start from the top, or rush, bc chances are you will pull and very quickly create a very nasty knot which will fuck up your hair. last time i did these on my own, i kept them for about 3 weeks; id oil them every other day or so, and i washed them once. I have pretty thin hair, but i had no real issue. you just have to b patient taking them out

for reference, just this front section of my hair took around 3 hours to do

A Place of a Contemplating Robot

I went with something more low-key. Jenny deserves some quiet, calm time now and then.😊(Also, a little reference in the title, and not just to the og show😉)

Really wanted to get another loose illustration out in time for the 20th anniversary. Plus, I’ve been meaning to do a calm piece. Between Jenny’s world-saving duty, life drama, robot-related issues, & people’s pettiness (sometimes including her own😓), I thought that she could use time to herself. That 3rd reason kinda sounds like sending a kid off to timeout for misbehavior, but hey, there might be stress behind that pettiness.🤷‍♀️ She does have the weight of the world on her shoulders. That, or it might be timeout-like after all😆 where she gets alone time to directly face her mental problems, with no physical problems to distract her.🤔

Or more interesting: needing to handle her mental problem in order to handle her physical one.🤯

Some might think calmer moments are boring, but I consider it a welcomed, necessary breath of fresh air, especially as someone who had a loud, tense upbringing.

Mini Journal

Ended up needing to keep my iPad charging the whole time; larger resolution (11x14” @ 300dpi) *and* Fresco’s live watercolor brushes drained it more quickly (~20% in 20 minutes). Even then, still a lot of crashes once I finished the sidewalk and bench. Now, only rarely do at that resolution. Watercolor-styled pieces will likely be 9x12” @ 300dpi, max.

Far more painful painting process in a full space. In a way, more directly an urban-sketching styled piece because now, it’s in a physical place instead of a void w/ colors! Similar to before, I mitigated some of the difficulty by using an analogous color scheme. This time, I really struggled with working w/ whitespace, like in Teoh Yi Chie’s or Liz Steel’s urban sketching styles.

What helped may have been a style I saw in this colored pencil Liz Steel piece https://www.lizsteel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/LizSteel-159-1104CafeFeohPacHwy.jpg , where sidewalk & road are white, & the only blocks of color are for cast shadows.

Self-Reference

I got into the pose myself, mainly to fix her bent leg & folded hands. In the end, moved the bend leg up, just showed her right hands’ fingers & her left hand’s index finger, & unbent her other leg. Tried to focus on the feeling & gesture of the pose, rather than follow the pose exactly to a T. Mlaatr is just about the perfect style for that, being a gestural cartoon.

Concurrent Illustrating & Post/Note-Taking

I illustrated & prepped my post at same time (...at least until I got to painting the sidewalk😥). In a way, it’s kinda good I didn’t do it this way before, since I didn't have set categories (like Behind-the scenes or Mini Journal) yet. Nonetheless, I still tried to be as organized as possible by having a preliminary & final version of the post on a Google Doc (especially since ELA has been my historical weak area😥).

Behind-the-Scenes: Story, Color Scheme, & Color Application Influences.

Tone & situation/implied story: the 1998 Yokohama Shopping Log OVA, with a robot (in YSL's case, a more human-like android) just hanging out and living life. Maybe even resolving some past problems or relationships.

Seonghwa is the loml & my ult bias and I am going to try and not make this like a PDF but I have THOUGHTS and no self-control.

I dont always skip those songs except maybe cowboy like me. I like sad songs or even slow ones, but it just feels like a slog to get through that one in particular. I dont really love the chorus of happiness so I think that might be it lol. I do like evermore, I just dont love bon iver's verse. I liked the background vocals but I didnt like the switch up between her part and his, it takes me out of the song so I think I got used to skipping it. my most listened to rn I think is no body no crime, it's just such a vibe and has that narrative element that I like and could just picture it being a movie.

yeah I was hoping for gothic romance, or dark academia vibes just based off of the name of the album so I think thats why I was a little ehhhh. I would have loved her indie style applied to those aesthetics and subject matters, especially because evermore and folklore had more interconnected storytelling aspects and you can do so much with that applied those aesthetics. Focusing on something like dead poets society or a secret history would have also been something new for her and if it veered more into gothic romance I think something crimson peak/horror like would have been interesting.

OOooh okay interesting and tbh I've heard that complaint too so I get it. I skip various ones really just depending on my mood, if I don't want something slow I definitely don't listen to "cowboy like me" but that song just hits when I'm in the mood, phew. That's all fair critique tbh and interesting. I'm realizing I don't listen to evermore all that often but most recently I've mostly been listening to "dorothea," "tis the damn season," "cowboy like me," and "coney island." omg "no body no crime" is seriously great and I've definitely had it on repeat before, it definitely has that narrative element and such an idk attitude that I love. Mmmm oh yes absolutely! I honestly didn't expect this toooo much because I knew it was gonna be like, well, a breakup album, but also you can have hope because I know she freaking loves Crimson Peak and Guillermo Del Toro's movies generally. So I could see her leaning into that at some point, but I also feel like there's a chance that reputation is as "intense" (or however you wanna put it lmao) she's gonna get in that sense. But you never know? But I do definitely hope she continues that type of writing style from folklore and evermore. I really wonder whether Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) or Aarson Dessner (of The National) are involved in the production, because they were both pretty heavily involved in both folklore and evermore. She gets the credit, of course, but their influence is undeniable. (And you can tell from her collabs w them on their other projects -- Big Red Machine is Bon Iver x The National and co, essentially. "Renegade" and "Birch" by BRM and "The Alcott" on The National's recent album.) SO there's that. There's hope? Lmao. She's also gonna have a song on Poets with Post Malone who's apparently making country/rock now (I haven't listened ngl) and Florence and the Machine which... love. There's hope for your dreams! hi!!! i have a kindle paperwhite that i love, the newest gen (the option without the ads and 32gb because i love books and wanted lots of storage space). i highly recommend it!!! it’s backlit, so you can read in the dark, and you can adjust the brightness and warmth of the screen, as well as the color of (regular) books between white, black, and a sepia/tan tone. you can also change font size, style, and boldness, as well as page orientation between upright and horizontal. i have a fun little flap cover case for mine, and a screen protector, but i’m sure you can get fancier/more protective cases. i like having my simple flap cover :) you can go onto the internet but it’s kinda ehh, but if you want to read fics from ao3 you can download them and port them onto your kindle using something like calibre, which is a totally free and open source software to take downloaded files, like pdfs or .mobis, and convert them or send them to your kindle/e-reader from a laptop or computer! ao3 supports downloading fics in house, i have several downloaded onto my kindle, and if you read fics from other websites (like fanfiction.net), there are websites that can help you download fics from those sites too, and you can use calibre to transfer them to your kindle :) and then of course you have access to the entire amazon books sale page (on the kindle! you can buy books on your kindle), and if you want to you can get kindle unlimited, which i have because i like reading kitschy romance novels lol mine also has a super long battery life, and i highly recommend spending to get the kindle dock as well, i use it to hold my kindle up while i read in bed and knit, and it connects to a cord to charge it for you :) all-in-all, i honestly really like my kindle paperwhite, but i also had a pretty large kindle library before i got it, so that’s why i got a kindle specifically. i also didn’t want anything that i could put apps on so i could read without getting distracted like i sometimes do on my phone, so the fact that it’s pretty simple in what all it can do is perfect for me :) (and you CAN get comics/manga on it, i just don’t read mine on it, and it’s stuck in b/w/ even on colored pages i think)

i agree with you, though. i'd definitely get distracted with other apps, so it's almost better not to have them? at the same time tho, i just feel like... paying for a device like that... and then not having the option to have other entertainment would piss me off LOL. esp cuz switching back between phone and kindle at night seems... a bit pointless (why i want to read more in general, to get off my phone + probs why my mom keeps telling me to just use the kindle app but... ehhhh). probably why it's so cheap tho.

honestly there was so much potential for this to go wrong and everyone knew it but i mean risk = fun right?

you’d all made bakugo promise not to blow up the whole tower if he got frustrated or lost

I feel like the biggest differences w/Gen Z in comparison to some of the older Generations' works are that they're willing to take the Marauders into different universes as children and write about them in a more contemporary style.

Young/new adult (17-28) and older readers were first introduced to Sirius and Remus as 33-year-old individuals, so it was easier for those readers to write S & R as adults attempting to grapple with their background and trauma and grief than it was to reach back and try to make their Hogwarts years more accessible. I think Gen Z writers are coming in and reclaiming their life experiences as young people growing up with technology and texting and the realities of being Online All the Time in a way that older authors weren't doing at the time. I assume part of that comes back to the development of technology and the schisms that exist between gen x/millennial/gen z readers on that front, but I also think older writers may have been less aware of some of JKR's bullshit, which made it less uncomfortable to stick to canon environments and scenarios.

Barring 'All the Young Dudes', many of the currently popular wolfstar stories take place in non-magical settings (college AUs, sports AUs, etc), and while those aren't exclusively written by the youths™, I think their prolificness has likely been influenced by JKR's shitty behavior; it's a lot easier to divorce those characters from their author's terrible views when you remove them from the world she created. That also plays into how large of a factor the characters' queerness plays in the narratives being planned—and as you mentioned, the influx in fics that feature trans, NB, or genderfluid characters is a great side effect of these shifts.

Also, having spent a fair amount of time reading fics in the fandom, I think there was a bit of a high bar to clear in terms of writing quality early on. There are always posts going around that recommend more "literary" wolfstar pieces, and a fair amount of them tend to skew older (specifically: before 2010). By and large, online communities seem to have embraced the "everyone has to start somewhere" mentality a bit more in recent years than they had then, but I distinctly remember getting comments when I was writing in the 2000s where people would drop in to tell me I had utterly mischaracterized someone or that my grammar was bad. All for constructive criticism, but I do have to wonder if the "flame" reviews forced people to either conform to what people were looking for (literary, stylistic writing), switch to another platform (LJ to ff, or ff to Wattpad, etc), or stop writing altogether.

Nowadays, I think our younger authors have an idea for a fic and just...go for it. They don't always have beta readers (which aren't inherently necessary, but can definitely impact style, structure, and word choice) so they'll post things as they come to them, they've got fan-pages on instagram and tiktok and tumblr where they make textposts about characters using modern slang that get hundred of likes/reblogs—they've found a formula that works for them, and they aren't inclined to change it (see: how many texting fics exist). Beyond that, relying on conversational and colloquial writing means they can process their emotions in real time while writing, in a way that we as older writers definitely could have, but didn't usually. When I was reading fics then, and even rereading some of those fics now, it always seemed as if fics danced around trauma a bit more delicately than some of the popular fics do now.

That's not meant as a slam to younger writers, but I do think young people on the internet these days are FAR more willing to share about their personal trauma(s) online, and when they write their fics, sometimes that's obvious. Older authors do/did it too, but I think it's usually a bit more strategically veiled than younger authors are now. It was a poetic thing, and arguably, not always a good one, considering the way mental illness/saviour complexes could often be romanticized. Young authors now fall into the same patterns, which again, aren't great, but I also think that they're the first to acknowledge their own mental health crises and say it hasn't been a great experience—even in a joking manner.

I could go on about this for DAYS but I've already written you an essay, so I'll leave it there hahahah

Yes, I have also noticed that the big fics in this corner of the fandom tend to be the non-magical AU ones--fics that essentially follow the plot structure of contemporary romance novels, but just so happen to have characters named Sirius and Remus in them. I mean, any one of those fics could have the serial numbers filed off and be published as an original romance book, you know? Up until now, I was just chalking that up to the popularity of romance novels--I figured that the writers were just replicating the structure of the books like they like to read, but in fanfic form. But you bring an excellent point--it might be more that they're trying to divorce the characters from the world JKR created.

This is fascinating. I'm loving all the meta that's ended up in my inbox today.
