Sujood has reached out to me to boost she and Sanaa’s fundraiser. They’re urgently trying to evacuate their family from Gaza and seek asylum in Belgium. Their previous campaign was suspended, so they have started a new GFM and currently have £1,642 out of their £50,000 goal! Please share if you can’t donate!
From their GFM page:
Dear friends,
We are reaching out to you with a heartfelt plea for help. Our names are Sanaa and Sujood, and we find ourselves in an incredibly challenging and dangerous situation.
Unfortunately, our previous attempt to receive donations was unsuccessful due to restrictions on transactions to Gaza. However, the urgency of our circumstances compels us to reach out again, this time with new procedures in place to ensure the secure delivery of your generous contributions. We are launching a new campaign because we cannot afford to wait for a long time for the restrictions on the bank account to be lifted it’s already being two months now. We are unsure if we will be able to access the funds or if they will be returned to the donors. In any case, here in Gaza, we are fighting against time. Every day poses a threat to our safety, and we cannot afford to wait. If, after some time, we are able to retrieve the previous amount, we will use it to rebuild our lives and continue the education of my siblings.
The situation in Gaza has become increasingly unbearable, and we have been left with no choice but to seek assistance from compassionate individuals like you. Your donations can make a significant difference in our lives and help us escape the dire circumstances we currently face.
This is ours story:
I hope this message finds you in good health and spirits.
My name is Sanaa Odeh, currently in Gaza, occupied Palestine. I am writing this as a plea for survival, for a future for my family and myself.
Our lives are in immediate danger, with non stop explosions everyday and every night, tanks and guns all around us, and fear as a constant companion. It is a non-stop nightmare, every minute of every day, for 6 months. Everyday is a struggle for survival. Lack of food and clean water creating a crisis of death by starvation and dehydration.
Despite the endless nightmare, we are a resilient and strong family. My beautiful parents gave everything to raise us as successful daughters and we are so proud of what we have achieved.
I work as a graphic designer and my sisters: a nurse/educator, small business owner, a medical student, and a field coordinator. Despite being on the path to rich and promising futures, it can all be taken away in any moment. We have already lost several family members, including my uncles and their entire family. There is little hope that the situation will end soon, all of us waiting for our turn next.
We are looking to seek asylum in Belgium. This campaign will help support us in covering the costs to do so, specifically in covering the evacuation costs per person. Your donation will provide us with the chance to escape the endless horror we’ve been facing for the last 6 months and give us a chance to return to a safe, normal life again, where we can once again contribute positively to society.
I understand that this is a challenging time for everyone right now, but please do not underestimate what even £5 can contribute to especially when it all adds up. It really does make a huge difference. No matter how small the contribution it can still change our entire lives.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story, your support means the world to us. Whether it is simply sharing our campaign or donating, it makes all the difference in the world to us. Your act of kindness can bring light to our darkest days and help us build a better future.
Thank you once again for all your support and kindness
With heartfelt gratitude,
Sanaa and Sujood

pairings : bakugou katsuki x midoriya izuku
warnings : angst. s***cide implied.
If you asked bakugou katsuki what he wanted the most in middle school, he probably would’ve laughed and stated - quite egotistically - that he was going to become the number one hero. If you asked him what he wanted most in the present day?
to turn back time.
to turn back time to that day.
the day bakugou katsuki lost his number one fan. his most cherished follower. his best friend. not that he would’ve admitted that in middle school, at least.
everyday, within the walls of Aldera Middle, it was a constant reminder of what katsuki lost. A reminder of a person who should’ve been there. A sickening reminder that midoriya izuku was dead.
A reminder that bakugou katsuki had murdered someone. not directly, at least. but still.
At first, katsuki didn’t believe that deku was dead. he refused to believe it. the nerd was the most cheerful person he knew. always smiling, always radiating happiness. always a reminder that katsuki was inferior to him. how else would the ash blonde compete with the nerd? despite deku not having a quirk, he seemed to always outshine katsuki in different ways.
even that damned nickname stirred something, down deep, within the explosive boy. kacchan.
when the nerd didn’t get up, his face plastered in an everlasting smile. katsuki knew deku - no izuku was gone. and he contributed to it.
what good hero material katsuki was. he remembered the tears falling from his crimson eyes, tears that he didn’t will to happen. they just did. he remembered falling to his knees and clasping the greenette in his arms. he remembered screaming for help, despite it not helping. all he remembered was the sobs that left him as he clutched the boy to his chest. vermillion staining his uniform, emerald eyes staring into ruby ones.
when help finally did arrive, katsuki refused to let go of de - izuku, blaming himself. blaming himself for something he aided in. he remembered the teachers yelling at students as they neared closer, phones out and lights flashing. he remembered the two extras who he hung out with almost snickering, almost thankful that a thorn in their side was gone. thankful that the quirkless nobody from their class was gone.
katsuki remembered falling into an explosive rage, screaming and cursing at them while explosions popped from his wrists. veins and blood ablaze with anger and agony.
he remembered the day all too well.
he told himself that he would visit the grave of his deceased friend three times a week. that’s what he owed to the nerd. the bakugou family turned up to the funeral and katsuki almost began to cry when he saw his auntie’s tear streaked face. midoriya inko looked like she was on the verge of breaking down. the bakugou’s hugged the green haired woman and katsuki hugged her the tightest. the woman was the only living person that tethered izuku’s memory into the ash blondes brain.
“I’m sorry.”
he had said, refusing to cry. he wouldn’t cry in front of his friends mother. he just couldn’t.
“it’s not your fault, katsuki. if anyone’s to blame, it’s society.”
inko had responded and without warning, katsuki cried for the second time in his middle school life. partly because he knew what she said was true, society really was about survival of the fittest. those who had strong quirks reigned above those with weaker or without a quirk.
if katsuki could give away his quirk, he would. he didn’t deserve it. not after izuku.
katsuki treasured everything that his auntie gave him, from the all might merch to the thirteen notebooks - yes, including the one he burned. he never knew why he set an explosive off on the material, but jealousy was definitely there. what the nerd lacked in strength was made up by wits and intelligence. every night, without fail, katsuki would read the charred page that his friend left him. he used it to expand his quirk’s knowledge and one day, he decided to rewrite everything down.
izuku’s death really did change him. for the better at least.
at school, katsuki snarled and threatened an explosion and those who dared mock izuku. he demanded that the headteacher set up a shrine of sorts, a demand that the teacher didn’t comply too until katsuki threatened he would tear the school to the ground.
that was how the mini shrine of midoriya izuku was created. everyday, katsuki would place a new flower down and would furiously scrub off the graffiti and spider lilies that dotted the shrine. how dare someone vandalise what katsuki had created.
yes izuku’s death did spark more anger within katsuki, but it was anger at society and those who he previously hung with. if it wasn’t for the memory of izuku, he probably would’ve turned to the dark side. it was only the memory of izuku that kept him sane.
“kacchan! we’ll still be the best heroes in the future won’t we?”
mini izuku cheerfully stated in the memory. mini katsuki laughed and puffed out his chest.
“duh of course! I’ll be the next number one and you can be my side kick!”
that memory occurred only a week before the dreaded news that izuku was quirkless. a week before katsuki gained a superiority complex. a week before everything changed between the two.
here katsuki stood. his head bowed as he read the name on the gravestone. etched deeply into the stone.
midoriya izuku.
beloved friend and son.
an enigma.
an enigma izuku was.
katsuki sat down, placing izuku’s tattered notebook down, and a small smile graced his face. or as much of a smile that the boy could muster.
“hey, izuku. it’s me again. your probably tired of listening to me talk everyday, but yknow what? I don’t give a shit.”
katsuki began, his voice hollow. gone was the aggressiveness that once took ahold of katsuki.
he looked at the flowers on the grave before he gently rubbed the notebooks cover, before he spoke once more.
“I managed to get the park renovated. the one we loved and always went too as children. you remember it right? if not, it was the one with the yellow slide and those cool as fuck swings. the ones you somehow managed to slide out of.”
the ash blonde laughed quietly, the only sound in the deserted graveyard.
“I miss you, izuku. school just isn’t the same without you. I miss your annoying ramblings. I miss your analysis. I mean, I’ve tried to replicate it but it’s failing. it’s probably because I don’t have your einstein brain.”
two tears fell onto the ground below katsuki. two more slowly followed before katsuki rubbed his eyes and sighed, looking up at the starry night.
“I hope, wherever you are, that you know I’m sorry. I bullied you because I wanted to protect you.” he then bitterly mumbled something. “also because I constantly thought you were better than me.”
he leaned forward and gently brushed his finger across the stone.
“you changed me, izuku. I want you to know that. I have to go early today, that jackass teacher has set a shit ton of homework. goodbye, I’ll see you soon okay?”
with a sharp inhale, katsuki stood up and picked up the notebook, clutching it like a lifeline to his chest. he then began to walk away, the tears already spiking his eyes like vengeance.
with a final look back, he turned his head and said three words that he had never said before.
“I love you.”
with that, the boy walked out of the graveyard. a strange feeling being lifted off his chest. what he didn’t know was that someone watched him. was always watching him with a smile on his face.
sitting beside the grave, a ghostly apparition of midoriya izuku hovered. wispy tears falling from his eyes. he watched his friend disappear and after those three words, izuku stood up. he stared longingly at the place where his friend sat.
with a small smile in the direction that the boy walked, izuku placed a hand on his non-corporeal body.
“I love you too, kacchan. I hope one day we can go back to the place where only we know.”

─────  👽 ! 𝗨𝗚𝗛 ★ WE LIKE IT ! is the debut single by the nugu boy group, OFF/LIVE, released by HONEYCO ent on SEPTEMBER 22ND 2023. It was first available only digitally but in the next month was released in a physical version. OFF/LIVE promoted the album for five weeks in which they spent a ‘no break’ month and one week, updating and posting almost everyday.
WE LIKE IT, as explained by skylar, would set their tone for their future releases as a group. The MV of WE LIKE IT was released followed by mini intros to the group's lore. For this single the lyrics of the song expressed a childlike sense of freedom and willingness. This would be a common theme for them for the meantime. Skylar and HONEYCO released an official statement on the lore. Saying that over time as the mind of a child matures so will their senses. Some were confused until Skylar cleared stuff up on live. Saying that this would apply to their music’s lyrics in the future.

─────  ★  ERA HIGHLIGHTS !
★  possibly their most replayed song yet! They can thank skylar and nine for writing and singing the heavenly shanty, shanty yeah yeah yeahs. The fan favorite of this song.
★  the song did not chart! Much to honeyco’s and the boy's disappointment. But on the brightside they had a few good music shows, and by this I mean they had a small fanchant at 2 performances. That was it though.
★  Skylar showed the demo version of We Like It live. The viewers said they preferred the demo.
★  not a highlight. But in this era both Zhiyan and Shin’s phone numbers were leaked by staff. While doing a blog, Prince showed off his contact names for Zhi and Shin in the process leaking their phone numbers. Fans proceeded to angrily dox the editors of this live show. Demanding they take down the video and edit it out. Honeyco’s producers and editors were criticized for being lazy after the video took three weeks to be taken down. Zhiyan even went as far as to complain about it live.
★  it's a shame the fandom was bigger because, according to fans, Nine really shined this era. Outlaws look back on this era to compliment him to this day.
★  a video of Akira building a lego set for 3 hours straight on youtube live went semi viral within the honeyco community.
★  Skylar relieved what he was working on in his producing studio and fans of off/live and cry babies (a popular girl group under a sub-unit of honeyco) lost their collective minds. The song ‘Your a dead man’ was leaked by the producer himself (skylar). He said he wrote this song for the member Danny solo. Which just made the entire community lose their shit over 1) that Danny was getting a solo 2) that skylar had apparently contributed to the writing and producing of three or more songs on her future album(s).
★  The group released their fandom name after the conclusion of promotion. All eight members gathered for the big announcement. The name Outlaws, as explained by jeonghan and skylar (with some unhelpful commentary from prince) was supposed to speak to the main lore of their group, and the word they had decided to focus all their storyline on, escapism. This explains itself really. “Even if you're an outlaw, an escapee of society's expectations, I hope you can always find your home with us misfits. Let off/live me your new home, even if you've left everything else behind "Jeonghan recited.
★  The boys also opened a tik tok page. Much to the fandom's glee, they discovered how absolutely clueless Jeonghan was when it came to the app. By this i mean on multiple tiktok the man leaked his private account. Literally linking his account in the description. Now, as nine exposed, zhiyan and nine had been going through all of his draft to make sure this doesn't happen again.
★  now as you'll see in almost every comeback, yijun will literally bribe you to stream. We like it.

Have A Rest
Character/s: Enzo Valenciano, Reader
Pairing/s: Enzo Valenciano X Reader
Genre/s: Fluff, Hurt/Comfort
Warning/s: overwork, mentions of insomnia, mentions of violence, fatigued state
Summary: (Y/N) finds Enzo overworking in his chancery tonight, and they need to get him to sleep.
Requested by: None
Note: Greetings! This is my first one-shot in Tumblr, featuring Enzo Valenciano from The Young Elites! I have never seen any works like this, so I decided to create one myself. Anyway, I hope that you will enjoy this story! Thank you for reading!
---------------------------
The bed was cold tonight.
That was always the feeling whenever Enzo was not there to lay down alongside you—cold, lonely, empty. The warmth that always emitted from him was gone, the weight shifting in the huge mattress was not felt. Every night without him with you was freezing. You were not in Beldain, but the whole room felt like its snowy lands.
It was no longer surprising, though. Honestly, this happens almost everyday. Enzo is the leader of the Dagger Society, the crown prince fighting for his stolen birthright. Of course he will be busy. Creating plans, thinking of future discussions, even dealing with a bunch of heartbreaks and reluctances. But no matter how busy he is, you knew that Enzo will always have time for you.
You see, you are (Y/N) (L/N), the most recent recruit of the Dagger Society. You lived in Serrata, one of the cities in Kenettra that is not very known by the others. The Messenger sensed you threatened heavily by the Inquisition Axis, their swords drawing on your neck and their stares sharp on your helpless face.
As you were about to be killed, they came to the rescue and carried you away from the dark alleyways of Serrata. Until today, the inquisitors found no trace of you anywhere. At that moment, it was the beginning of your new life as a Young Elite—protected and hidden.
You discovered back then that your ability was (Your Elite Ability), and the Daggers thought that you would be a great contribution to the mission. It was Enzo, himself who said so. Although saddened that they saved you because they could get advantage, you were still happy to know they rescued you from the hands of death. Even if it was not because of kindness, the fact that the crown prince saw you as an important being was enough.
It took you a month to prove yourself that you were worthy to becoming a Elite. The Daggers were rather impressed at your capabilities. Raffaele complimented that you were quite the fast learner, pointing out details on how you were able to conjure your power correctly. In just a matter of time, The Reaper had officially given you the name (Your Elite Nickname). You were finally one of them, the seventh member of the Dagger Society.
It took a couple more days, but overtime, the others started to open up to you. They would begin small talk, greeting each other with smiles, and even inviting you to trainings. In just six months, you and the Daggers are like a family. A family working together to help the crown prince.
Speaking of the crown prince, he is actually your lover. You caught his eye on the first day he knew of you. From your unique markings to your courageous and sweet personality, he felt himself falling in love with you. You did not look like her in any way, but this new love was somewhat so special to him.
Everyday, he would fall deeper and deeper in the trance of love. He never knew he would love somebody romantically again, ever since the tragedy of his lost love, Daphne Chouryana. Enzo kept telling himself to get out of the trance, but the feeling only grows stronger as the days passed. Was this a sign to try again? He both hopes and not.
Since the feeling kept developing more, Enzo needed to get it out of his chest. Enzo told himself to make it direct and bland, but his words ended up being romantic and sincere.
He really needs to stop falling in love so easily.
But what he did not expect is the fact you actually reciprocated his feelings. You truthfully told Enzo about what made you fall for him, beginning in both his benefits and weaknesses. Even you liked the flaws he always thought were a hassle. Although happy, he had said that he needed some time to think whether to accept your confession. He still loved Daphne deep in his heart, but he knows he needed to let go. Lucky for him, you were patient enough to wait.
A week later, he finally answered your confession: yes. Enzo pondered that maybe it was time to let her go, to start a new love with a new person. It may be a painful process, but he is with you. And if he is having romance with you, he may learn to move on from a heartbreak. The Daggers were joyous about the news, knowing their leader finally found someone else to love. Raffaele and Dante were the most glad for the prince.
And now, this is where the present had brought the two of you: alone in the bedchamber whereas Enzo locks himself in his private chamber to think and plan. You were beginning to worry for your beloved prince. As a leader of a secret society, Enzo must think straight and instantly for new ideas on finding new Elites and striking on the evil aristocrats ruling Kenettra. He is aligned with Fortuna, after all. Enzo will always find a way to be victorious.
However, ambition comes with consequences as well.
In the mornings, every Dagger sees him with dark circles under his eyes. The Reaper kept telling them it was because of insomnia—that was both a truth and a lie. He is observed to be less efficient during duels, and his appearance that used to be clean and dignified, now looked disheveled and lowly. But on the bright side, he made new plans on how to murder Queen Giulietta and her sleazy husband.
Even so, all of you knew that Enzo needed rest. It was so clear that he was exhausted on always plotting and calculating. Raffaele even spotted him once having a strong headache, yet he kept devising and writing down the keywords. He was so ill that the Messenger insisted to give him a head massage. The beautiful malfetto believed with all his might that it was the first time seeing Enzo so distressed.
"He's still not here," You mumble to yourself as you stare at the door. Or rather, at silent abyss. Is he overworking again? He must be.
You were now in dilemma, choosing whether to leave him be or approach him. If you leave him in his office, he might be in a terrible state in the next day. And you do not want that to happen. If you approach him, there is a high chance that an argument would occur. You knew that Enzo was too stubborn to stop himself from working, but you knew that his health was very important.
... I can't let history repeat itself. It's time for a change. You finally decided as you hopped off the bed where you were laying down for the whole hour. You did not care if he was going to protest or not. This time, you are going to make him sleep regardless of his reaction.
Still in your sleepwear and barefooted, you go out the door of your bedchamber and walk in the luxurious hallways of the Fortunata Court. You were certain that the consorts were fast asleep, only hearing crickets and the passing wind. Their job was never an easy task at all, and you are considerate enough to understand.
Every step you took was leading you outside the fancy court. You knew where you were going, and it was to the secret chambers that was underneath the Fortunata Court. It was the place where the Dagger Society held their meetings, duel against each other, or even just resting after a long fight. As malfetto children, they must stay hidden.
While pacing in the secret chambers, all the noises from nature had vanished, all silenced by the walls of the room. And at this point, you heard new ones aside from your footsteps: low groaning of frustration, mumbling of tiny details, and the sound of a scribbling quill pen on a parchment.
And you saw it—a door slightly left open, a small light lit in the dimmed room. You recognized that door too much.
That is Enzo's chancery... You thought, staring at the door in front of you. It was the chamber where the prince privately devises and calculates for the upcoming battle against their enemies. Whenever there was time, he would invite you to simply sit beside him or help him soothe his nerves. But because he is tied up for the past days, he stopped the invitations.
Your feet brought you to the door of the chancery. You knew that it was very impolite to enter without his invitation, but you had to convince Enzo to rest. His health was at risk because of overwork.
Since the door was left open just a crack, you thought it would be enough to peek what the prince was doing. As you took a small glance, you saw the state of the jaded Reaper.
Enzo was sitting on his chair, a hand running through his crimson locks while the other scribbles the quill on the parchment. His hair was tangling over his shoulder, no longer in the usual low, loose tail. The prince was still wearing his fancy doublet. He must have no intention of sleeping if he is not wearing any sleepwear tonight.
But his eyes...
They had the same dark circles every morning under them. His eyelids were drooping, desperate to keep themselves open to read the plans. Enzo was obviously struggling in staying awake, yet at the same time, he holds himself back from craving for sleep.
"Enzo," you say to yourself, unaware of the volume of your voice. "Why are you doing this to yourself?"
Knowing you are now caught, you went inside his chancery and closed the door beind you. "I wanted to check on you. You were not coming in our bedchamber." You replied to him, your tone genuinely concerned.
"(Your Elite Nickname)?" Enzo looks up to see you peeking on his door. His expression looked more fatigued than what you had expected. Even his voice was raspy. "It's already midnight. What are you doing here at this hour?"
"Well, I am not heading to the bed..." You start to speak, pacing towards Enzo. You walk behind him, pushing away the hair that covers his nape and kisses it softly. "... If you're not coming with me."
The prince chuckles lowly, a small smile tugged at the corners of his lips. You notice his mood lighten up a bit at your presence. "I appreciate your concern for me, (Your Affectionate Nickname). I expected you to be asleep by now."
Enzo shivers lightly at the kiss, but he does not complain in any way. "Are you convincing me to sleep or seducing me to our bedchamber?" He teases, smirking softly. "If you think you can make me go to bed, it will be a long night, (Y/N)."
"As much as I know you are occupied with your work, just please remember to rest every now and then." You tell him, giving the back of his neck more kisses. "Everyone in the society had noticed your fatigue. All the Daggers are aware of how weary you are. We are worried for your health, my Reaper..."
Your lover only kept silent. Though it was not obvious, he was honestly in disbelief. Was his mask breaking already? Perhaps he had softened from exhaustion, making him look very sluggish during mornings. He was supposed to be tough in front of people, but his almighty appearance was starting to shatter from weariness.
"Please, my Reaper? Have a rest." You said, trying to convince him more. However, he only kept silent.
"Enzo, come on. You and I know that you are tired. Go to bed with me." You added, not giving up on convincing him. You even gave his neck more affection, yet all he did was shiver. As much as you wanted to drag him out of his chancery, you knew very well that it is disrespectful.
But all you got was nothing. No word was uttered from the working prince. His hand was still scribbling the quill.
His silence made you think he would not bother to sleep. You sighed, thinking that it was actually harder to convince him. It would be his choice, not yours. But the urge to drag him to the bedchamber was very tempting. "If that's what you wish, I'll just leave you be. I hope you'll finish your tasks tonight. Goodnight, Reaper."
With that, you leave him a soft kiss on his forehead and began to walk out of the chancery. When your hand grabbed the knob, you were suddenly stopped by a pair of firm arms wrapped around your waists. You turn your head to see Enzo embracing you from behind, his face buried in your hair.
His words were sincere, just like his confession. But this time, it was intentional. He did not speak this way by mistake, but now with truth.
"Pardon me, (Your Affectionate Nickname)," Enzo mumbles softly, his voice husky, laced with tiredness and guilt. "I apologize for making my Daggers worry. I can assure that none of you are involved with my overworking behavior."
"Enzo, you know that there is nothing to be sorry for—"
"But I had made you worry! I made my entire society worry!" He protests, exclaiming slightly. He clears his throat, continuing his sentence. "(Y/N), I accept that I am at fault for your concerns. What can I do in order to soothe your worri—"
Without a second thought, you turned around to lean in and steal a kiss from his soft lips. This was one of your favorite methods of making him quiet. Your hands strongly gripped the collar of his doublet, pulling him closer.
Meanwhile with the Reaper, he was dumbfounded by the kiss. But after tensing, he slowly melted and returned it, his hands around your waists. The kiss was useful as a weapon and an act of affection when it comes to Enzo. And right now, you are using it in those two ways.
Three minutes had passed, so the two of you had to pull away. As your lips widened the opened gap in between, soft panting and gentle heartbeats were heard in the chancery. The eye contact did not break, though. Midnight meets (E/C), gazing deep into each other to see the love within.
"I missed loving you this way," you mutter to Enzo, resting your head on his chest. A yawn had as well escaped your mouth, showing tiredness.
"Looks like I succeeded at making you go to bed then." You said, grinning softly at your victory.
"So did I." Enzo nods, holding you in his arms. He takes the chance to smell the scent of your hair. He calms as his nostrils inhales the scent of your locks, his midnight eyes closed. "I just want to sleep tonight. I'm tired."
Enzo smiles, chuckling softly. "Maybe."
After that, both you and Enzo walked back to the Fortunata Court, hands intertwined with each other. Two malfettos, walking hand-in-hand in the middle of the night.
However, when you arrived in the court, the two of you parted ways. You were heading to the bedchamber, whereas the Reaper was going towards another place.
But of course, you did not mind. He was going to the bathhouse, after all. Enzo said with a blush on his cheeks that he did not bathe for the night, since he thought he would stay up for his tasks again.
And now, you were in the same moment as if travelling back in time: laying down the bed, waiting. But now had a change; you were smiling and expecting Enzo to go inside who will be freshly bathed and ready for sleep.
It did not take long before Enzo opened the door. He was now wearing his sleepwear, his blood red hair straight and wet from water. The smell of soap from the bathhouse was lingering on his body.
"Was I late, (Your Affectionate Nickname)?" He asks.
"No, you're just in time." You reply, beaming at the sight of your prince.
Enzo walks to the bed and lays on it, quickly taking you into his firm arms for a snuggle. Your head rests on his broad chest, using it as a pillow. You yawn, and he follows. It was very late now—both of you must sleep and drift to your dreamworlds.
But a night will never end without goodnight kisses. Enzo caresses your cheek in his scarred hand, slowly leaning in to kiss your lips. In return, you wrap your arms around him and close your eyes. The warmth that you have been craving was now there, in the bed and in your body. The bedchamber feels much more comfortable, now that Enzo's presence was near.
Once you pulled away, the Reaper beams and whispers in your ear: "I love you. Thank you for your help."
You smile back at him, returning his sweet nothing. "I love you, too, my prince."
With some affection and embracing in the bed, the two of you close your eyes as the serenity of midnight soothes your tired bodies.
Goodnight. The wind whispers as it puts out the candle.

The Barbie Movie
The Barbie Movie has become a sensation in the entertainment world, capturing attention for its innovative marketing, diverse cast, and its celebration of womanhood. Barbie is undoubtedly the movie of the year.
Innovative Marketing
Let's start by taking a closer look at the incredible behind-the-scenes strategy that made "The Barbie Movie" such a standout success. The moment people saw leaked photos of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling rollerblading down Venice Beach, as Barbie and Ken, the internet erupted with excitement. You couldn't escape Barbie. There was a wave of pink-themed branding deals, from Barbie-related Google search results to Barbie-endorsed Burger King, and sold-out Barbie Crocs (Rambharose, Amber.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The magic didn't stop there. The cast, in their vibrant pastel quintessentially Barbie outfits, embarked on a promotional tour.
Tumblr media
Fans were not just passive observers but active participants in the promotional efforts thanks to interactive campaigns like the Barbie Selfie Generator.
Tumblr media
It was, in every sense, a masterclass in the art of movie marketing.
Diverse Cast
Another key factor contributing to the success of "The Barbie Movie" is its cast.
The film industry has been under scrutiny for its lack of diversity for many years. This movie challenges that status quo by celebrating people of all backgrounds. It features a female main character, as well as prominent Black, Asian, and Latina, stars Issa Rae, America Ferrara, and Simu Liu in leading roles.
Tumblr media
Barbie's global dominance sends a clear message to filmmakers and studios that audiences are not only ready for but actively seeking more inclusive narratives. Bringing unique perspectives and experiences into the creative process reflects the real-world diversity we see in our everyday lives and adds to the excitement of marginalized viewers.
Celebration of Womanhood
Now, onto the heart of the film: its powerful celebration of womanhood.
Barbie's rose-tinted world is disrupted when she begins to grapple with anxiety, irrepressible thoughts of death, and the most dreaded of all, cellulite. In her pursuit of returning to her idealized life, Barbie steps into the real world, where she becomes an object of sexualization, ridicule, assault, and ogling. Eventually, Barbie is empowered to reclaim her land, thereby empowering real-world women, including myself, to do the same.
It's crucial to note that this film is directed by a woman, Greta Gerwig, who infuses it with emotion, social commentary, and sharp satire. It also features a female lead. I was deeply impressed, watching Margot Robbie deliver her performance, bringing emotional depth and a touch of comedy to the character of Barbie.
The film's blockbuster success lies in its unflinching portrayal of the beautiful yet challenging reality of being a woman in today's society. It's a remarkable cinematic achievement crafted by and for women.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, the hype around the Barbie movie is well-deserved. From its innovative marketing that had us hooked from the start to its diverse cast and crew, and its powerful celebration of womanhood, this film is something truly special. How did you like it?

Byung-Chul Han: ‘The smartphone is a tool of domination. It acts like a rosary’
Q. In this world you describe, one of hyper-consumption where relationships are lost, why is it important to have objects that we love, and to establish rituals?
A. These things are a support structure that provides peace of mind in life. Nowadays, that is often obscured by information. The smartphone is not a thing. It produces and processes information, and information gives us the opposite of peace of mind. It lives off the stimulus of surprise, and of immersing us in a whirlwind of news. Rituals give life some stability. The pandemic has destroyed these temporal structures. Think of remote working. When time loses its structure, depression sets in.
Q. You have described how work is becoming more like a game, and social media, paradoxically, makes us feel freer. Capitalism seduces us. Has the system managed to dominate us in a way that is actually pleasing to us?
A. Only a repressive regime provokes resistance. On the contrary, the neoliberal regime, which does not oppress freedom, but exploits it, does not face any resistance. It is not repressive, but seductive. Domination becomes complete the moment it presents itself as freedom.
Q. Why, despite growing precarity and inequality, does the everyday world in Western countries seem so beautiful, hyper-designed and optimistic? Why doesn’t it seem like a dystopian or cyberpunk movie?
A. George Orwell’s novel 1984 has recently become a worldwide bestseller. People sense that something is wrong in our digital comfort zone. But our society is more like Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. In 1984, people are controlled by the threat of harm. In Brave New World, they are controlled by administering pleasure. The state distributes a drug called “soma” to make everyone feel happy. That is our future.
Q. French writer and mathematician Blaise Pascal said that: “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” We live in a cult of productivity, even during what we call “free” time. You named it, with great success, the burnout society. Should the recovery of our own time be set as a political objective?
A. Human existence today is totally absorbed by activity. This makes it completely exploitable. Inactivity reappears in the capitalist system of domination as an incorporation of something external. It is called leisure time, and as it serves to recover from work, it remains linked to it. We need a policy of inactivity. This could serve to free up time from the obligations of production and make real leisure time possible.
Q. Do we need more silence, more willingness to listen to others?
A. We need information to be silenced. Otherwise, our brains will explode. Today we perceive the world through information. That’s how we lose the experience of being present. We are increasingly disconnected from the world. We are losing the world. The world is more than information, and the screen is a poor representation of the world. We revolve in a circle around ourselves. The smartphone contributes decisively to this poor perception of the world. A fundamental symptom of depression is the absence of the world.
Q. Depression is one of the most alarming health problems we are facing today. How does this “absence of world” operate?
A. When we are depressed we lose our relationship with the world, with the other. We sink into a scattered ego. I think digitalization, and the smartphone, make us depressed. There are stories of dentists who say that their patients cling to their phones when a treatment is painful. Why do they do that? Thanks to the smartphone, I am aware of myself. It helps me to be certain that I am alive, that I exist. That’s why we cling to our cellphones in situations like dental treatment. As a child, I remember holding my mother’s hand at the dentist’s office. Today the mother will not offer the child her hand, but a cellphone. Support does not come from others, but from oneself. That makes us sick. We have to recover the other person.

The Best Yuri of 2019
Tumblr media
2019 was a challenging year for many, in and out of the anime community, which is still reeling from the horrific attack at Kyoto Animation’s first studio in July that killed 36 people. However, I want to take this moment, as we start a new decade, to reflect on some of the greatest achievements in Yuri.
2019 marked the genre’s 100th anniversary, 100 years since Nobuko Yoshiya released her landmark lesbian novel Yaneura no Nishojo that shaped and created Yuri as we know it. It was possible Yuri’s best years ever, as more incredible titles were released and localized, we experienced fantastic events and moments, and more. This article is part of my continuing celebration of all things Yuri!
Note that many of the works mentioned came out before 2019, but they either were first released in English during 2019 or hit particular high points during this year. Now then, here is the best of Yuri in 2019!
15: SukeraSparo
This Japanese Yuri visual novel developer is starting to reach new heights as they set their sights on releasing new and innovate Yuri titles. The English release of The Expression Amrilato, an educational Yuri visual novel that teaches the player Esperanto, was one of the most unique and creative works I have the pleasure of playing this year. But, they outdid themselves this year, releasing a sequel, Itsuka no Memorajxo, creating one of the most beautiful Yuri games in Folklore of Kudan, and founding a sister brand, SukeraSomero, “to fill the world with YURI!”
Tumblr media
The Expression Amrilato is available in English for PC on Steam and Mangagamer
14: Mage & Demon Queen
This outrageous and vivacious webcomic hits its stride in Season 2. After setting a solid foundation, this masterpiece by Kuru “Color-LES” is finally able to explore some more interesting plot lines such as its characters’ pasts, conflicts between the demons and humans, and figuring out who’s gonna be the bottom (it’s Malori, it was always going to be Malori). It is chock full of modern humor and moments I can only describe as hilariously kinky, while rarely feeling gross of sleazy. I can only wait to see what is next for these star-crossed lovers.
Tumblr media
Mage & Demon Queen: is available to read in English on Webtoon
13: Yuri Anthologies
In 2018, Yen Press gave us the first hint of some Yuri anthologies starting to squeak into the West with Éclair, but 2019 threw the floodgates open! New works are coming out in both Japan and the West, featuring multiple artists coming together to create works featuring workplace romance, isekai, first-time stories, and even MARRIAGE!! Additionally, creators released volumes collecting their various short stories, like Rouge Nagashiro’s Eve and Eve, and some series saw multiple artists contribute to an already established world such as in the Bloom Into You Anthologies.
Tumblr media
12: SHWD
Sono’s science fiction Yuri doujinshi series, published in English by Lilyka, is everything I did not know I wanted in a Yuri series. It showcases pulse-pounding action as the women of the “Special Hazardous Waste Disposal” fight to take down the horrific Dynamis. It has musclebound beasts of women that exude strength, power, and femininity at all times. And it has a compelling story about overcoming personal conflicts and learning to rely on others.
Tumblr media
SHWD is available digitally on Lilyka
11: If I Could Reach You
No other series this year delivered an emotional gut-punch like If I Could Reach You. This tragic and beautiful manga by tMnR follows a young girl as she attempts hopelessly to overcome her attraction to her brother’s wife. Everything from the artwork to the dialogue masterfully communicates the devastation and pain that the protagonist Uta feels. It is beautiful and devastating, and I carry every awesome moment on my mind continuously.
Tumblr media
If I Could Reach You is available digitally and physically in English from Kodansha: https://amzn.to/36vsYPe
Honorable mention: SQ/Tamen de Gushi/Their Story
2019 was a little bit of a slow year for Tan Jiu’s webtoon, thanks to an extended hiatus, especially when compared to 2018’s triumphant and spectacular storyline. However, small moments of genius like Sun Jing’s father’s phenomenal visual monologue keep this work in peak form top and my heart. I hope that its recent Japanese serialization on Comic Walker help even more people enjoy it.
Tumblr media
10: Still Sick
In my recent review, I called this workplace romance a “Yuri manga for Yurijin,” and there is no way I could come up with a more apt description. Still Sick surprised me with its self-awareness, knowledge, and commentary on the genre. It has an incredibly deep story about two complex and layered characters that ignite each other’s passion, in more ways than one.
Tumblr media
Still Sick is available digitally and physically in English from Tokyopop: https://amzn.to/2rVRH07
9: Going Beyond Girl Meets Girl
Yuri stories tend to repeat the same story, two girls meet, they fall for each other, they get together, THE END! The past decade or so has finally seen more stories adding sexual elements, in contrast to earlier S works, and some even explored the dating life of two schoolgirls. However, we have recently seen something remarkable: works featuring couples “graduating” (literally or metaphorically) and enter the real world. Series like Citrus, Kase-san, and, briefly, Bloom Into You explore the relationships as they exit the honeymoon phase and get into the meat of lesbian livelihood.
Tumblr media
Kase-san and Yamada is available for English preorder: https://amzn.to/2MXnp4w
8: Nagata Kabi
Over the past few years, Nagata Kabi has redefined what the Yuri genre can be. Her powerful autobiographical manga essays My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness, My Solo Exchange Diary, and Genjitsu Touhi Shitetara Boroboro ni Natta Hanashi communicate her experiences with queer identity, mental illness, and alcoholism. No work of fiction could ever hope to reach Nagata’s strength and crushing honesty. Nagata’s manga has and will continue to change readers and the genre for years to come.
Tumblr media
My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness is available digitally and physically in English from Seven Seas: https://amzn.to/2MZ7DWJ
7: Bloom Into You
Nakatani Nio’s popular Yuri series Bloom Into You crushed it in 2019. It concluded serialization, ending on an incredibly high note, and dominating the market in both English and Japanese, selling over one million copies (well deserved). Additionally, Sentai Filmworks released an excellent collector’s edition of the 2018 television anime adaption that is now a must-have for Yuri collectors. But my favorite aspect of this series is the spin-off light novel series featuring one of its best characters, which have already begun English release.
Tumblr media
Bloom Into You: Regarding Saeki Sayaka is available digitally and for physical preorder from Seven Seas: https://amzn.to/2SVPVHG
6: Heart of the Woods
When I heard that one of the co-creators of Highway Blossoms, one of the better English Yuri visual novels, was creating his own studio, I was pretty excited. But nothing could have prepared me for Studio Élan's first release, Heart of the Woods, which blew me away. The enchanting adventure full of exceptionally queer characters shattered every expectation I had. I am looking forward to its Switch port and voice acting patch, as well as more titles from Élan.
Tumblr media
Heart of the Woods is available for PC on Steam. Switch edition coming later this year.
Honorable mention: Hayama-sensei to Terano-sensei wa Tsukiatte iru
Oui Pikachi’s manga about two teachers navigating a new relationship is one of my new favorites. Everyone is so supportive of the title characters as they stumble their way through an honest and mature love. However, I am only giving it an honorable mention this year, as I am sure it will be on this list next year after Seven Seas releases the first volume in English as The Gym Teacher and School Nurse are Dating!
Tumblr media
The Gym Teacher and School Nurse are Dating! is available for preorder in English from Seven Seas: https://amzn.to/39JhXMs
5. Sexiled
Ameko Kaeruda’s spectacularly feminist and outrageously funny light novel series Sexiled is could ever ask for and more. I feel in love with its compelling female characters and their riveting battle against the sexist conventions of their society, all of which painfully mirror reality. This work is cathartic, empowering, and so very, very gay.
Tumblr media
Sexiled is available digitally in English from J-Novel Club. Physical edition coming later this year: https://amzn.to/35u6NaW
4: Yuri Life
I adore domestic Yuri. Granted, I love a good romance and fantasy, but so many of these stories exist that it feels overwhelming, and sometimes it is just good to sit down and read about two women who love each other living their everyday adult lives in bliss. Kurukuruhime’s Yuri Life, which I have enjoyed ever since it was first uploaded to Pixiv and am so proud to own in print, is precisely that. Nine couples being cute and living together in a variety of humorous, scandalous, and adorable situations. Yuri cohabitation has never been so good! Now, if I could only get some Yuri titles about women raising kids together…
Tumblr media
Yuri Life is available digitally and physically in English from Yen Press: https://amzn.to/35stSLg
3: Children’s Cartoons
For the past several years, children’s cartoons and media have slowly begun to allow bits of queer representation onto the screen. While we are still a long way from having Elsa kiss a girl, the small and large victories on children’s television give me hope. Some of my personal favorites include an episode of Nickelodeon’s The Loud House about a lesbian date, a lesbian couple and agender character (using they/them pronouns) in Craig of the Creek, the female protagonist of Twelve Forever developing a crush on another girl, and of course the unbelievable amount of queerness that She-Ra and Steven Universe shove into every moment. I wish I had more series like these when I was young, and I am thrilled that my students get to grow up with them.
Tumblr media
2: Our Dreams at Dusk (Shimanami Tasogare)
Yuhki Kamatani’s Our Dreams at Dusk is easily 2019’s best manga. The incredible story explores many real aspects of LGBTQ identities, gay, lesbian, trans, non-binary, and asexual included, in an emotional and resonating masterpiece. The artwork is stunning and more expressive than words could ever be. I stand by what I said in my review, that Our Dreams at Dusk is the greatest manga I have ever read and wholeheartedly believes that it was deserving of the only 10/10 score I gave in 2019.
Tumblr media
Our Dreams at Dusk is available digitally and physically in English from Seven Seas: https://amzn.to/2s282AE
Honorable mention: ‘The Conditions of Paradise’ Licensed
One of the best moments of this year came out of Anime Expo when Seven Seas announced that they had licensed Morishima Akiko’s Rakuen no Jouken and would be releasing it as The Conditions of Paradise in 2020. Not only is The Conditions of Paradise a fantastic and mature work of Yuri literature, but it is also over a decade old, having been published originally in 2007. This license, more than anything else, helped me realize how far Yuri came this year. Not only is the hottest new series being adapted, but a historic and profound classic of the genre.
Tumblr media
The Conditions of Paradise is available for preorder in English: https://amzn.to/2FjTE9M
1: Yuri Publishers
Not too long ago, it was rare for us to see more than a few Yuri manga releases in a year if any, but now we are at the point where a publisher can do an event announcing five Yuri licenses in a single day! As of this year, all the major publishers, and plenty of smaller ones, are actively licensing, adapting, and publishing amazing Yuri works: Yen Press, Viz, Kodansha, Seven Seas, Tokyopop, Renta, J-Novel Club, and more keep giving us incredible Yuri. I also have to mention the incredible work Lilyka Manga is doing, working directly with mangaka to adapt Yuri doujinshi titles into English, something I would have never dreamed of a few years ago.
Tumblr media
As Yuri enters its second century, we are staring down the rest of 2020, a year that will no doubt go down in current Yuri history. The year will see a record number of Yuri manga releases both in Japan and from licensed series in the West. We are getting several promising anime series like Adachi to Shimamura, Magia Record, Oshi ga Budoukan Ittekuretara Shinu, a Princess Principal movie, and more. I cannot wait to see what this year will hold for YuriMother and the Yuri genre. I hope you all stick with me through it as we navigate the waters of a newer, gayer, and greater world of Yuri.

(1/2) hi david! ok i have a quick thing abt women and the priesthood: its so frustrating to me, and it used to be 1/12 months we would study the priesthood and honestly they don't teach us anything really other than what kind of stuff they do (vaguely). i always try to bring up the talks about womens priesthood power (only if endowed lol) but they always get brushed off. when i said how unfair it was when i turned 12 that i couldn't get the priesthood my mom took me aside and talked to me about
(2/2) she said to think of it like a wheelchair for men, to help them to be able to do good and help others and give them motivation because if women had the priesthood they would want to help everyone (i cant even with that metaphor its so wrong) and honestly, why can't women hold the priesthood? has that ever been said? why? because we live in a man/father led society? im just really tired of all the barely hidden sexism in lessons + calling the guys 'the priesthood' i hate it so much. thanks!
————————————————————
Yes, I remember those lessons. I thought for the young women and Relief Society the focus should be on how they can access the priesthood, why it matters there is priesthood and so on, not learning the young men can pass the sacrament (which btw, preparing or passing the sacrament doesn’t require the priesthood and we used to allow females to do this).
And how come the people in priesthood quorums didn’t need to spend a month learning about women’s contributions, or motherhood, or a way to provide some equity for women having to put up with learning of the men’s roles for a month
Yes, I’ve heard the excuse that men need priesthood in order to train them to be as good as the women naturally are. I don’t buy it. If priesthood service boosts a person’s goodness, why would we not want women to participate?
—————————
I feel like our Church doesn’t do a good job explaining it’s priesthood restrictions. That’s probably because there isn’t a good justification for them.
We had the disastrous ban of people of African descent not being eligible to hold the priesthood and also not allowed to receive temple blessings. Fortunately, in 1978 the temple blessings and allowing men of African descent to be part of the priesthood was restored. Now no one is banned based on race, ethnicity or national origin.
In early church history, the revelations mention men and the priesthood. I think that’s the basis for the current ban on women.
Was this absence of women intentional?
Could this be a case of the word “man” being used to mean “mankind” and wasn’t supposed to exclude women?
Maybe “men” is all the culture was able to accept at the time. Women didn’t have constitutional rights and weren’t allowed to vote, and were thought of as people who remain in the house while their husbands dealt with things in the broader world.
—————————
For a long time, our church taught that women can “receive all the blessings of the priesthood” even if they don’t hold it themselves.
Today, President Nelson has indicated that something unique happens in the LDS temple ceremony — something that imparts priesthood power to women. In the temple, there are certain ordinances that women perform for other women, which indicates they have the priesthood even though they haven’t been formally ordained to the priesthood.
Unfortunately, this isn’t very well defined.
Do women who’ve been through the endowment ceremony hold priesthood power, even though they aren’t ordained, and are only authorized to use this priesthood in the temple?
Could they be authorized to use this priesthood outside of the temple?
Why are they only authorized to use their priesthood for other women and not men?
Is this the Aaronic or Melchizedek priesthood, or is it some other branch of the priesthood?
—————————
I think it’s clear women can hold priesthood and wield its authority. There’s many examples from the Bible and early Church history.
Judges 4-5 - Deborah was a judge of Israel, acting as a prophet and military leader at a time when women were treated like property and valued by the number of children they could bear. She didn’t follow the gender role expected of her, and showed God is willing to have women as leaders, women as prophetesses. Perhaps patriarchy isn’t God’s will but a cultural trait of the ancient Israelites which we now read in the Bible and think is of God.
Acts 2:17 - “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams”
Is priesthood required to prophesy?
Romans 16 - powerful scripture for equality and inclusion--so many names of women in positions of authority and influence listed. There’s not enough details to know the exact roles of the women. Is a “fellow servant” an apostle? Is a woman who travels & teaches as Paul does, an apostle? What about the women who are leaders together with their husband? Some women sound like heads of the congregation, are they equivalent to bishops and pastors?
There’s an address from Joseph Smith to the Relief Society on March 30, 1842 that many believe indicates he intended for women to hold the priesthood. “the Society should move according to the ancient Priesthood, hence there should be a select Society separate from all the evils of the world, choice, virtuou[s] and holy— Said he was going to make of this Society a kingdom of priests an in Enoch’s day— as in Paul’s day”
Healing by the laying on of hands was a practice that was common for Mormon women in the 19th century, although it was said to be done by faith, not priesthood. There’s even a famous example of Mary Fielding Smith blessing an ox to health on the trek west to Utah. This practice was stopped because it was too similar to the priesthood.
—————————
What our church has allowed women to do has varied, and needing priesthood authority was often the excuse for why women couldn’t do these things.
Women were barred from praying in Sacrament meeting from 1967 until 1978.
In 1984, a woman spoke in general conference for the first time since 1930. Since then, women have spoken in every general conference.
Women were once permitted to join in or stand as an observer at the blessing of her baby, but today it’s priesthood only
In 2013, the first time a woman prays at General Conference.
In 2013, the "sister training leader" position is created, a leadership position for women who are missionaries.
In 2015, the church appointed women to its executive councils for the first time.
2021, positions for women were created at the Area level of leadership in Europe, they’ll participate in leadership councils, and train Relief Society, Young Women and Primary Leaders.
—————————
Can women hold the priesthood? I think the evidence points to yes. I believe we’re in the same situation as the priesthood ban of Black men where it’s now our tradition and belief and will take a revelation to undo. The question is, are the apostles and prophet seeking such a revelation?
If we extended the priesthood to all worthy members regardless of gender, that would solve several issues. For example, we have areas with many more women as active members, and the men in those congregations must shoulder several callings that require the priesthood. Their burden would be much lighter if women could share in the responsibilities
The disparity that women see in their everyday lives would be eliminated. They may be in a position of authority at work, but then on Sundays, for the most part they’re limited to working with women & children, and excluded from top leadership positions. I wrote a thing where I switched gender roles at church and I think it makes clear the messages we are sending to our members, particularly our impressionable children and teensagers.
Then there’s the case of trans & intersex people. Is priesthood for men given according to their spirit or to their body? How do we know what gender is the spirit of an intersex person? If everyone were eligible for the priesthood, it would save us from having to answer what is perhaps an unanswerable question about whether the body & spirit of trans people got mismatched.
—————————
We currently are not accessing the talents and capabilities of 1/2 the population. You’d think a church that has Heavenly Mother as part of its theology would be anxious to recognize the contributions that women can make and let them have leadership roles at all levels of the Church.

Your Weary Widow Marches
A Gender Neutral MCxFelix fic in which our dear barista educates their teacher and shows him some music from their home.
I’ve never really written fanfiction before but I thought Id give it a shot. The formatting looks weird on my end so if it looks weird after posting I apologize I couldn’t figure it out. Hope you enjoy!
—-
The crackling fire and pages being turned were the only sounds heard for the past few hours. Felix and I sat on either side of a couch placed in Anisa’s office silently reading our respective books. I’ve been in Astraea for nearly a week and had I known that Felix’s teaching method would be done via reading books the size of an encyclopedia I probably would have chosen Sage or Anisa instead... probably
I glance up at Felix, he’s sitting with legs crossed slouching on the arm rest of the couch, glasses on and enthralled in his book. I'm leaning with my back against the arm rest facing Felix, peering at him from behind my knees. I watch as his eyes scan the pages, partially hiding behind my book so he doesn’t notice me stare. I rub my eyes, dry from the endless reading of Astraean history. I know plenty of history and lore from this world thanks to countless hours of playing Last Legacy and stalking forums, but I don’t think I could’ve convinced Felix of that without having to explain what video games are let alone the internet. He thought if I were to learn magic I should at least know part of its history and it’s contribution to their society.
Despite spending some time with Felix I'm still amazed at the attention span he has for reading. I scan the room trying not to move too much lest I be scolded by the warden. I glance over at the high back chair across the room. The one Anisa sat me in after my jaunt through Felix’s portal and painfully onto Anisa's desk. My mind begins to wander.
I’ve only been here a short time but I feel like I’ve adjusted well. I wonder what's happening on Earth. Does time pass the same at home like how it does in this realm? World? Alternate universe? I still don’t exactly know how to explain my predicament. Has anyone noticed I'm gone yet? I wonder if I’m on the missing persons list, someone at work will have noticed I didn’t show up for my shifts. I cringe slightly at that last thought, my open book now resting on my chest. Ah damn it, I’m definitely fired aren’t I. How am I gonna pay my bills.... and my home, I miss my bed....my plants. SHIT MY PLANTS. I bring my hand to my face and cringe, my beloved house plants they’re going to wither away in my absence. Fate is such a cruel mistress.
“Bored of reading are we?” I slightly jump at Felix’s comment. I bring my hand down and look at him. Staring at me through his glasses a smirk on his lips. I flush slightly and close my book.
“No I just, got to thinking about Earth, and my life, I guess I’m just a little home sick,” I mumble out those last words. I want to be honest with Felix but I don’t want him beating himself up for my situation. I mean yes he is the reason I’m stuck here but I don't hate him for it. Felix frowns and closes his own book.
“Ah... I am sorry about that, I-“ I sit up interrupting him.
“No no no, I'm not mad at you, I’m actually quite enjoying my time here. I mean I don’t have to make drinks for annoying customers everyday here,” I force a laugh but it comes out awkwardly. Felix gives me a quizzical look. I then realize, with the amount of times he calls “dear barista” I just assumed he knew what it meant. “Yknow, my job? A barista?” Felix flushes and avoids looking at me.
“I must admit.. I do not actually know what that is,” I cant help but chuckle, the great necromancer Felix, is embarrassed to not know something.
“Well my dear teacher," I emphasize the word teacher mimicking the way he calls me, "allow me to educate you on some Earth information,” I sit cross legged and scoot closer to him book in my lap. Felix adjusts to face me properly and removes his glasses. I clear my throat and smile at him. “My part time occupation of being a Barista, requires me to make drinks for customers and sell them, more often I make coffee but sometimes people order tea. We sell pastries as well,” Felix gives me yet another confused look.
“All you do is prepare drinks and flakey confectioneries?” I nod in response with a smile, I can only imagine what he assumed a Barista was. Felix chuckles and runs a hand through his hair, “All this time I thought it was something more complicated, you described your customers as being annoying? I am assuming you do not like this particular job?”
“Well, I don't hate it but the customers can get a little rude and for the dumbest reasons too. One time a woman threw her drink at me claiming I added 3 1/2 shots of espresso and rather than 3,” I laugh to my self looking back at the memory, chuckling more when I see Felix’s horrified expression.
“A woman... threw a drink at you? Because she deemed it made incorrectly? I did not except Earth customs to be so. . . Barbaric,” Felix looks at me astonished and confused but all I can do is laugh. “And why are you laughing? Are you alright did she hit your head when she assaulted you with a beverage?” Felix is now standing while I clutch my stomach in pain, the combination of the story and Felix’s confusion is too much to bare. After a minute I manage to calm down enough to speak.
“No no, she did not hit me in the head, I’m just laughing cause it was funny, well at the time it wasn’t but my co workers took pictures and I looked ridiculous. I can laugh about it now,” I wipe a stray tear from my eye as I recount the experience. Thank god her drink was iced.
“Picture?” Felix chimes in. I try to think of how to explain how photography works but I come up with an idea.
“Why don’t I show you?” I stand handing Felix my book and I jaunt over to Anisa’s desk. I let her peruse my backpack because she seemed so interested in my “Earthly items” as she called them. I walked back over and sit on the floor, patting the ground next to me so Felix can join.
“You known there is a perfectly good sofa right next to you, I don’t understand why you wish to sit on the ground like we are mere children,” but despite his protests Felix sits next to me still clutching our books. I rummage through my back tossing the other items to the side. My wallet, a flyer, a jacket, that granola bar which has definitely crumbled to pieces in its package. Until I finally find it, my phone. My first night here I instinctively tried to use it, forgetting I am now stuck in a world without wifi or cell towers. In an effort to hopefully conserve its battery I hard shut off my phone I did not think I would need it but now is an opportunity for me to educate Felix about my world rather than his and tell him a little about myself. Really I just want a reason to prolong my time from reading anymore history. I hold the power button and silently pray. Please have some battery left, please please. Felix is leaning towards me, his face inching closer to mine, I glance at him studying his expression. He looks confused, and curious at the same time, there's a slight scrunch in his brow like he’s trying to seem like he understands what I’m doing, but I know he doesn’t. In that moment his eyes meet mine, I turn my head to fully face him, a blush creeps up his face and I can feel mine begin to warm as well. “Felix-“
BING
We both jump at the sound of my phone turning on. Damn phone, well I guess I kinda asked for that. Felix sits back and clears his throat.
“Um, what, what is that?” His voice wavers slightly but I choose to ignore it to save him some dignity.
“Its my phone, on Earth nearly everyone has one of these. You can use it to communicate with other people, take pictures, look things up, and listen to music.” I begin to unlock it and open my photo album.
“You can communicate with other people? On this... this flat brick?” Felix points accusatory at my phone the scrunch in his eyebrows have intensified creating deep crevices on his forehead. I nod while I scroll through trying to find the photo.
“Yup and take pictures, such as this one,” I turn my phone to face Felix revealing the image documenting the after affects of being assaulted with coffee. He leans over to get a better look. In the picture I'm standing by the cash register, soaked through my clothes in an extra large coffee's amount of liquid. The brown liquid stains my apron and the parts on my white shirt poking out from underneath. There's smeared whipped cream going across my shoulder up my neck and partially along my jaw, and the scowl on my face could kill a man. The instant I show the picture to Felix he plants a hand over his mouth to stifle his laughter. He turns away in an attempt to hide his amusement but I know he wont last.
“Im-I must apologize I did not mean to laugh but, but the look on your face is hilarious,” Felix faces me again trying to hide his smile with the back of his hand. I start to chuckle, I turn the phone back to me and swipe to the next picture. Its a similar picture but in this one my co worker put whipped cream on top of my head, something about it “completing the look”. When I show this picture to Felix it breaks his terrible attempt of remaining poise. He laughs loudly, and it’s extremely contagious. I laugh along with him reminiscing in his beautiful laugh. Every once in a while we calm down until we look at the picture and we start up again. After a bit I’m able to calm down enough to speak.
“Don’t feel bad for laughing, at the time I was pissed but my co workers cheered me up and now I have these memories to laugh at,” I start to look through my album again as Felix calms down from his laughing high. I find more pictures to show him. Some are of me at work with my co workers, one picture of me laughing as I held a dog that jumped through the drive through window. I show him more pictures, some are of earth sunsets which Felix claimed to look like they belong in a painting. I also show him a picture of some Geese I saw while on a walk, and then a picture of said Geese chasing me. This gets Felix to laugh again but not as hard.
“You lead an interesting life on Earth, it seems similar to Sage you are also prone to provoke others into attacking you,” I roll my eyes at Felix’s joke and give him a friendly shoulder bump. Its at this moment I realize how close he’s sitting. Our books set aside and Felix is leaning on one arm politely looking over my shoulder at my phone, I can tell he doesn’t really understand how it works but it seems he’s enjoying this moment to much to ask. In an attempt to keep the sweet moment I change the subject.
“Hey do you want to listen to some Earth music?” With a nod from Felix I close the app and instinctively go to press my streaming app. Damn no Internet. I think for a second and remember I have some music I bought in times before streaming apps existed. I find the app and open it. Dear god my taste was cringey. I scroll through the songs until I stumble across a less than embarrassing song. “This is a classic where I come from, everyone has heard this song at least once. I lay back onto the floor so I can properly listen to the music. Felix looks at me and awkwardly lays down as well, I click on the song allowing it to play.
Just a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere
Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train goin' anywhere
Felix gives me a puzzled look but I just shrug and look up at the ceiling. I close my eyes and take in the song as it plays. If I concentrate hard enough I can imagine my self back on Earth. Sitting in my room listening to 80s music while I do laundry or cook my dinner. I start to feel nostalgic again but I try not let my emotions take over. The song ends and I pause it before it plays the next song. I roll onto my side and rest my head on my hand.
“So what’d you think?” I beam at Felix, I genuinely want to know what he thinks of Earth music, and more specifically a song that I am quite fond of. Felix is laying flat on his back, he ankles crossed and his hands laying on his chest. He looks nervous to be laying on the ground next to me but has made no attempts to leave.
“I thought it was... interesting to say the least. It had quite a captivating story although I was confused when the subject changed multiple times, and what exactly are they trying to “not stop believing” in” Felix does air quotes and seems genuinely enthralled in the “story” of the song. I smile and start to look for another song.
“How about you choose the next one?” I tilt my phone towards him. Felix sits up at my question.
“I dont feel very well versed in Earth music though,” He mumbles. I shrug at his comment.
“Just pick one with a name that sounds interesting to you” I show Felix how to use the phone and hand it to him laying back down. I peek at Felix, he’s holding the phone in one hand and is scrolling with the other, he’s holding it like an old man. I watch his face, he’s thoroughly looking at every single song title and determining whether they are interesting or not. I find it... cute, his concentration face is cute. Oh if he caught me staring I know he would become a blubbering blushing mess, I mean I would be too. I close my eyes again as I wait for him to pick.
“This one seems interesting,” I hum in response, but when Felix says the title out-loud and panic seizes through me. I sit up and shout WAIT but I'm too late. He already pressed it. And then I hear it.
That dreaded, infamous G note. Felix turns towards me surprised and hastily hands the phone to me, I pause it before another note can play.
“Hells MC what will that song make my head explode or something??? You nearly made my heart stop.” Felix takes a deep breath with his hand on his chest.
“I'm sorry, that song its kind of embarrassing actually,” I can feel myself flushing, I look away in embarrassment at the fact that I had that song downloaded and the fact that I nearly sent my teacher into cardiac arrest.
“Embarrassing how?” Felix looks at me puzzled. I open my mouth to speak but then stop. Hold on a second, Felix doesn’t know this band, let alone what an emo phase is. Well judging by his raven skull necklace he does but not in the way I do. I guess it wouldn’t be so bad if we listened to it. I do still like their music. But god did it HAVE to be this song. I clear my throat and look back at Felix.
“Nothing, it’s nothing I was just being dramatic,” I stifle a laugh. “We can listen to it, I actually quite like this band,” Felix nods and turns to face my direction, were now both sitting cross legged and I press play on the song. I smile a little as the song plays and close my eyes again. I cant even remember the last time I listened to this song. My mind begins to wander again, to my younger years when I first heard this song.
I was such a try hard back then, wanting so badly to “be different” but also to mend the emotional pain I was going through, and this band really helped me through it. This song is a little more narrative than the last one so I hope Felix would like it. I can’t believe I freaked out like I did god he must think I'm crazy, or maybe that lady really did hit my head when she threw that drink at me. As the song plays I silently hum to it, quiet enough so that Felix might not hear. I drink in the lyrics and instruments and it feels like I'm listening to it again for the first time.
The song ends and I open my eyes again to pause the music before it plays another one.
“So what did you think of tha-“ before I can continue I'm stopped by the sight of Felix’s face. His eyes are misty and his nose is colored pink. Was he... was he crying? Felix looks at me and his eyes go wide. He quickly turns away and rubs at his face.
“There-there is quite a lot of dust on this floor, honestly you would think Annie would have any sense to clean in here every once in a while,” I cant help but smile, wow he really is a goth child.
“It’s ok Felix, this song makes me cry sometimes too,” Felix side eyes me and sniffles.
“I-I was not crying, yes I admit the song was... moving to say the least…. But, but I will not be mocked by you for my emotions,” Felix turns to face me again refusing to meet my eyes, his voice turning accusatory. I scoot closer to Felix and place a hand on his shoulder. He looks at me astonished and slightly flushed, either from the contact or the crying, I mean dust, I will never know.
“Congratulations” I say with a smile. Felix’s puzzled look twists even more.
“What ever are you talking about,” Felix questions.
“You’re emo now,”

Shrek 2 is the hero we needed and here is why
youtube
You see I could have just embedded this clip and that would be enough for an answer. Nobody and when I say nobody I mean literally nobody can argue with me about the greatness, the elegance, the excellence of this scene. The song surpasses the original in delivery, and the scenes that are recreated within the castle sequence, is even better than the ones it’s mocking... Overall, it is a theme within the Shrek franchise to do better than the ones you’re mocking, even when the movie itself is not taking anything serious.
On a more serious note, Shrek is a movie that started out as a parody of overused Hollywood tropes, but, through great writing, the franchise found its soul, right here in this film. While the first installment did not have much story to begin with (other than the fact that it was mocking Hollywood and Disney) Shrek 2 is a genuine attempt to have depth in characters and storylines while still mocking everything the fairytales stand for.
Tumblr media
The movie takes of from where it left in the previous installment. Before delving into the story we see Shrek and Fiona’s honeymoon in a montage and all is well within Shrek’s universe. Until, a letter gets delivered to their suite and they learn that Fiona’s family are expecting them to visit the kingdom for a celebration. This moment is a crucial one for me, because finally we are about to get answers to questions we had in the first movie. Like, where is she the princess of, why did her parents leave her at the castle, who are her people and the movie expands on these in a great way. Not only that but the movie also expands on its own universe. The newly introduced concepts are not foreign to us. Like of course an evil Fairy Godmother recruited people through a deal he made with King Harold long long time ago to make sure his son Prince Charming married the princess and became the king. By the way King Harold turns out to be the Frog Prince so the deal he made with Fairy Godmother for his happily after makes sense.
While, Shrek 2 is a great follow-up movie it's also a great standalone story. It is told in such a way that we are unburdened by a need to know what happened in the previous movie. The movie introduces new characters and places with such ease that we don’t question whether something like that belongs in this universe. New characters such as Puss in Boots, Prince Charming, king and queen, and Doris are all fan favorites. The way these characters rose to favor kind of reminds me of the Star Wars Sequel but don’t quote me on that.
youtube
I will use this section to point out insane attention to detail and great scenes apart from the final scene. Specific scenes like the dinner scene, thank you mother; mother!? are some of the greatest scenes that were ever produced. There is also the scene where Shrek, Donkey and Puss get arrested and a bag of ‘catnip’ is retrieved from Puss, the reference went over my head at the time but now, it is even funnier knowing the context. I would also argue that the dinner scene is a masterpiece on its own but sadly I don’t accept objections. The delivery of the characters are great as well. All the actors are on their best game and you can tell by the way they mend so well together.
Other than that, the details such as Far Far Away being modeled after Los Angeles is such a great idea. It plays more into the fact that Shrek doesn’t belong into the life Fiona previously had. The villain being a commercialized character within the Far Far Away makes a lot of sense as well. The pop culture references are integrated into its world don’t stand out, almost like they were always there. There is a burger king knock off named Friar’s Fat boy and Farbucks. It has been more than a decade (almost two) but the jokes they made about the consumerism culture still stands; like when Mongo (giant gingerbread man) destroys a Farbucks people who escaped from there go to the one across.
Tumblr media
Don’t worry this is the semi-final segment of my rant on Shrek 2. One of the most important parts of Shrek is its soundtrack. The songs are great at setting the tone and enhancing the viewing experience. A fair example of that would be Fairy Godmother’s Holding out for a Hero. It ties into the story better than it did in Footloose and I can fight you on it, try me. In the first movie soundtrack was good too but this… this is above that. Every single song has a meaning and contribution to the overall story and nothing stands out. While the first movie used the music to subvert expectations that this wasn’t your typical Disney movie second one aims for the neck. That is why still to this day you associate All Star by Smash Mouth, Livin La Vida Loca, and Holding out for a Hero with Shrek. It is that good.
Now, let’s talk about the greatest scene in animated movie history. I referenced it probably too many times but still... Fairy Godmother’s Holding Out For A Hero... Who came up with it, how can one come up with this, we are unworthy of such viewing. Jokes aside the scene is both suspenseful and funny. The rules are set straight and we know this has to have a good ending but there is a what if Shrek can’t make it, in the back of our minds while viewing that makes us scoot to the edge of our seat. The sequence has so many remarkable moments to point out like when Mongo slowly drowns or Puss fights with the knights, even the simple dancing is amplified and I’m not even talking about the vocal performance. This scene outdoes every scene ever existed full stop.
Tumblr media
I cannot let go of this movie I’m so sorry but to close this one off I will share my thoughts with you on a more serious note.
I think everyone falls in love with Shrek at least once, because we can relate to the way he feels and thinks on so many levels. Shrek was told time and time again that he was unworthy of being loved by a society that hated him for simply existing. He believed that until he met Donkey and later Fiona. Shrek 2 comes in when Shrek has learned how to love and be loved and to open up to someone but he is not ready to face society and, society is not ready to face him. Despite being loved by who matters to him the most he’s not the ideal husband for Fiona according to her family, friends and people. So he starts second guessing his worth. It’s when you get something you’ve always wanted but don’t feel deserving of it and it is something we experience everyday until we settle within our minds about who and what we are. Like a great philosopher in the name of Shrek once said: Ogres are like onions, they have layers; Humans are like onions too we have too many layers to be one thing. And That’s exactly why it is easy for us to connect with Shrek.

"Fool Me Once" -- [1987]
I run a hand through my done-up hair, snagging it on hairsprayed strands, wincing.
"Thank you for coming today, I know you're busy as busy can be but you made time for this, so, we appreciate it." Danielle tells me me as I sit down and she readies her notepad and pen, switching her recorder on to tape audio.
"No problem." I reply, glancing at Duff in the corner by the door.
"I know this might be a little strange but I always like to start my interviews off with a icebreaker, if that's okay?" She offers.
"No, that's fine." I tell her, getting more comfortable in my chair.
"This philosophy we've been trying to pan out in some of our shoots is the difference between beautiful and sexy, and explore that notion and gauge if people even think there is a difference, so my question for you is: do you think there is a difference between 'sexy' and 'beautiful' and which would you rather be?"
"Oh, my God, okay." I breathe out, laughing, and she joins me.
"You said 'okay' so I asked." She reminds me and I nod.
"Beautiful implies to more than just outward appearance, it applies to someone's soul and their spirit, their attitude, how they carry themselves, how they treat others, whereas 'sexy' literally means sexually exciting which is usually based on looks mostly." I point out.
"Okay, and I also asked which you'd rather be--or which one you think you are." She rewords it.
"You sure did, um…" I already know my answer, but don't want to make it seem like I want someone to tell me I'm pretty. "...I don't…" I sigh and she looks like she's dying to hear my answer, and so is Duff. "I'm pretty." I reply and she furrows her brows. "I mean, I think I'm decently pretty. I've been called beautiful before but I still have a lot to work on within myself before I feel comfortable with that. But I appreciate it when I'm called that."
"And what about 'sexy'?"
"Oh, no. I'm not." I say it matter of fact, and she looks stumped.
"What?"
"I mean, if I try I probably can be but just everyday I don't see myself as 'sexy'."
Duff's laughter quickly erupts, and I look at him to see his hand on his mouth to stifle it before he clears his throat.
"Sorry." He mumbles to Danielle when she looks back at him before turning back to me.
"I assure you, Vivian, you are a very sexy, very beautiful woman." She promises.
"Thank you." I smile shyly at her.
"Okay, I was wanting to talk about you a little bit because I feel like people know who you are but not much about you other than what's, I guess, painted on you in a certain way, so if you would tell me who Vivian Sixx is." She crosses her legs, brushing a hair from her eyes as she patiently awaits my answer.
"Oh, gosh, nobody's asked me that, yet." I blurt, thinking for a moment as she brushes my comment off with a small giggle. "Um," Nikki Sixx's wife, maybe?, "to be honest I'm not sure." I chuckle out, rubbing my lips together. And she looks at me like she fucking pitties me. I force myself to save this close-call shitshow, giving Duff another look and he gives me an encouraging thumbs up as he mouths, "you got this."
"I dance." I let out, and she raises her brows. "Ballet, not stripping." I clarify. "I have since I could walk."
"You've never considered a professional career in it?" She asks me next.
"I was going to but then plans changed and I put off school. But I do plan on going back and finishing at some point." I explain.
"Did those plans involve your marriage?" She questions and I chuckle a little.
"I got pregnant--or I thought I got pregnant. It wasn't until after we got married that I found out it was a false positive." I admit. "And I'm sure people are going to say that I was never pregnant, that I was just trying to trap Nikki in a marriage but that's bullcrap because nobody can 'trap' Nikki or make him do something he doesn't want to do, so..."
"I can’t see him doing anything he doesn’t already want to do.” She agrees with a smile, glancing down at her notes before clearing her throat. “On the lines of Playboy, being that some of our executives saw you in the music video for ‘Girls, Girls, Girls’, you were voted ‘easiest on the eyes’ in this past weeks poll out of eighty-two other women.” She informs me and I raise my brows. “Does stuff like that flatter you or do you see it as misogynistic?”
“Well, um, firstly, I’m sure glad you said ‘on the eyes’ because I was about to ask you who started the survey and where do they live?” I reply and she laughs. “So, I’m glad it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be, but, um…” I lick my lips, letting out a breath. “...I don’t think it’s necessarily misogynistic so I don’t mind it, but I don’t really like the fact that there’s eighty-two other women at risk of feeling less-than now.” I admit. “I appreciate it, though. I’ll take it.”
“You don’t like competition?”
“I do but I’m pitted against women constantly in my personal life or the media tries to, at least, and it’s just stale at this point, you know? It’s stupid.” I rub my forehead.
“Are you referring to what’s recently happened with Vanity?” She blurts and I force myself not to be phased. “Do you have any comment on that particular situation?”
I look at Duff once again, screaming internally while faking a smile.
“It was honestly a misunderstanding.” I lie. “I know we’ve already said it was misunderstanding before but it truly was.”
“Have you spoken to Vanity since?”
“Yes.”
“So, you two are still on good terms, even though she told the world she was engaged to your husband?” She presses more and I brush red hair from my face, trying to keep my tears from growing in my eyes as I see Duff from the corner of my eye, looking at me sympathetically.
“I love her to death.” I say, honestly--even though I shouldn’t love her, I do. Even if she’s a part of the reason my heart broke, I still love her. Even if I’m not acknowledging her existence, I love her. “And I wish and pray nothing but the best for her.” I finish and she grins slightly, knowing she’s getting a good story.
"Is she a woman you've felt like you've needed to compete with?" She asks next, her words hitting me in the gut.
"Subconsciously, maybe, but I've never gone out of my way to compete with her. I've never had to."
"What about groupies?" She raises a brow. "Or do you care because you two have been married for a while?"
"I'm sure a lot of women think, 'oh, I'm married to him so I've won', but I've seen guys take off their wedding rings before walking into a strip club or a bar and leave with three girls under each arm--a marriage doesn't solidify anything we think it does, it should but it doesn't so of course there's been moments where I've been pissed off about women doing everything they can to cross a line but, again, I don't wake up every morning and say, 'what do they have that I don't?' in comparison to groupies. They're termites: they swallow wood, ruin homes, and then it's on to the next." I say and she swallows uncomfortably.
"Does that not contribute to society's stigmatic view on promiscuous women being 'sluts'?" She asks me.
"Having sex with people doesn't make a woman, or a man, a slut. Pursuing a taken man or woman, knowing they are taken, makes a slut. Cheating on a significant other makes a slut." I state.
"What about posing for Playboy while being in a relationship?" She counters.
"Posing naked doesn't make someone a slut." I defend what I said earlier.
"Just wanted your view on that since you come from a strict upbringing in the Christian faith, is all." She tells me. "Especially since your mother is bound to hear of all this and probably have plenty to say."
"I haven't talked to my mother in years so if she has something to say but can't say it directly to my face, it's not worth hearing." I tell her. "My dad is the one I'm antsy about all this happening because of." I feel my skin prickle with nervousness because I never gave much of a thought to my dad seeing me on Playboy.
"Do you have a good relationship with him?" She asks me, intrigued, and I nod.
"Yes." I say. "I always will, he's the most important person in my life for sure."
"I think we all thought that'd be Nikki from the way we see you look at him in pictures and in passing."
"Oh," I say it a little flat, a small inkling of a look coming to her face and before I plant any doubt in her mind, I add, "I'm still completely head-over-heels for him but my dad's always gonna be my number one."
"Does he and your father get along or does your dad keep his distance, too?"
"No, no, he and my dad get along fine." I assure her. "He really keeps his distance out of respect for my mom, but lately he's been more involved, so...but, no, he doesn't have any problem with Nikki. He really appreciates him and all he's done for me, um, yeah, it's really a blessing they get along."
At least he did. Before he found out Nikki had an entire mistress...on national television…along with the rest of the country.
"That is very nice." She agrees. "And what about the other boys, do you get along with them as well?" She refers to Vince, Tommy and Mick.
"Oh, yeah, absolutely." I rub my lips together.
"Is it true you and Tommy and Vince and our very own Tansy Lyn grew up together?"
"Yes. I met Tommy in elementary school, and Vince and Tansy in middle school and we've been friends ever since."
"What are they really like? Outrageous news reports, complaints from parents and the church, girls, parties, drugs and booze aside, what are they authentically like and how do you coincide with them and how has being alongside them from the start of their journey, to now, shaped you?"
"They seem larger than life and it's hard to see them as anything but that, but I've seen them all be so overwhelmed indescribably with joy, and I've seen them all be completely broken and not know what to do, and I've seen them be piss poor and then have more money than God it seems, but they aren't these huge rockstars behind the scenes. They have diva moments, of course, but Tommy and Vince still act just like the boys they were when I first met them, and the same goes for Nikki and Mick. They act out for publicity, and everything in the press is obviously exaggerated but they're normal guys. They're honestly just regular, gross, messy, disgusting, perverted, immature stinking boys--talented, but still normal." I admit. "And I think the effect it's had on my life is just that I've had to mature faster than maybe I would have because it's like I have children. Like I'm constantly going and someone's going through a crisis whether it's Tommy one day or Vince the next, or whatever so keeping them out of trouble the best I can and then trying to be there and as present as I can be when they need me is stressful but it's rewarding. I like helping out where I can and they need all the help they can get so, it's really helped mature me a little more, I guess, is what I'm trying to say."
"I mentioned earlier their reputation within churches and religious groups and I'm curious as to know how you, as a Christian yourself, feel about songs like 'Shout at the Devil' which really got a rise out of politicians and church-goers everywhere, and most recently 'Wild Side'--which is a song that you are an accredited writer on--that's off of their 'Girls, Girls, Girls' album and is a mockery of the Lord's Prayer?"
"First of all, to clear this up, I didn't write anything in 'Wild Side', Nikki asked what the Lord's Prayer was and I told him and his brilliant mind gave me a writing credit which will plague me the rest of my life, I suppose, but to answer your question...it's 'Shout at the Devil', not 'Shout with the Devil', therefor it doesn't bother me. Now, 'Wild Side' bothers me. A lot. But that's a way Nikki felt when writing it, and I'm not going to tell him those feelings aren't valid just because I don't feel the same way. That's not fair to him, and I'm certainly not ever going to tell him not to express himself and channel how he feels into his work because that's what makes music and art individual and unique. So, it doesn't matter how I feel. If it makes him happy and he's proud of it then that's that and if I don't like it or don't agree with it or find it insulting to my beliefs then I just, 'forgive him, God, he knows not what he does' and just get over it."
"Do you think there will be a new 'Filthy Fifteen'?"
"I would say Tipper Gore and her group of desperate, dry, housewives can go get screwed by other men because their husband's are clearly inadequate but then I suppose they can't find bigger pricks than who they're married to, so..." I blurt and she widens her eyes, a little smirk on her lips as she laughs.
"I take it you weren't a fan of the censorship?"
"The only plus side to censorship and stickering everything is that kids know what to play in front of their parents and what to save for themselves." I finish and she chuckles some more.
I talked some more about marrying so young, what it was like being married to one of the biggest names in rock music at that time and so on, all while hiding the fact that once I left there, I was going to go back to the tour, sleep in a separate room than my husband, not talk to the friends I grew up with who were supposed to have my back, and be so completely miserable.
The moment Duff and I leave the room once I've said goodbye and thanked everyone who was apart of the process for my shoot, I feel lightheaded.
"Viv?" Duff asks me, concerned, and I take deep breaths, bracing against the wall. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah." I lie, nodding a little. "Just tired, I think."
My voice cracks painfully and my tears are already beading at my lashline.
"Viv, if you need a second--"
"--No, I'm fine. We gotta go." I deny, making myself walk again before he stops me. "Duff…" before I can argue, he's putting his bass down and pulling me to him, hugging me tightly.
I give up, knowing that he knows me too damn well to buy my shit.
I wrap my arms around him, burying my face in his chest, feeling my tears, hot against my cheek, soak into the fabric of his t-shirt as the warmth of his lips press comfortingly to my hair.

The Beauty of Red Riot’s Origin Story: Episode 72 Analysis (LONG POST AHEAD)
Well, here we are! I’ve been waiting ages to watch this episode, and now, it’s finally done, and I am more than happy with how it turned out. I’ve seen it in both Japanese and English, back to back, and both Toshiki Masuda and Justin Cook knocked their performances out of the park, and the emotion conveyed in their voices only made our boy’s origin story that much more emotional. But WHY is it so emotional? What makes such a seemingly ordinary backstory have such an impact on a viewer? (Especially viewers like, you know, US). Well, this is the purpose of this lil analysis here, so let us explore how Kirishima’s backstory contributes so nicely to his character. (Disclaimer: Manga screencaps are not my translation).
Let’s start from the beginning:
Tumblr media
This panel shows us what we already knew to begin with: Our boy Kirishima is good-natured, stands up for others, and has strong, manly convictions. Nothing special, really, and the revelation that he was like this long before he entered UA is a great foundation for his character. In that regard, he has a similar foundation to Deku, but what differs is their struggles. Now, we know Deku grew up without a quirk in a society where quirks have been thoroughly normalized, but what does Kirishima struggle with, if anything? Is that even possible, what with him being so outgoing and boisterous?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As it turns out: yes. It’s VERY possible. This is where we see that our Red Riot is not as infallible as we may have thought. Yes, Deku had a hard time growing up without a quirk, and while Kirishima was born with a quirk just like most others, he grew up being ashamed of it, which if you think about it is a lot worse in some ways. Quirks are hereditary, and for many people, including Kirishima, quirks are also an important part of one’s own identity. This can inspire feelings of depression and even envy towards people with “better” quirks, like Mina. In contrast with Kirishima’s more traditional view of heroism and chivalry, Mina has a flashy quirk and bubbly personality, which is really effective for diffusing the situation with the bullies. This is where Kirishima’s manliness fails him, and no, not because he got shown up by a girl (thank GOD for that). It’s because heroism in the “modern” age favors heroes who can provide entertainment. Someone who’d be right at home in, say, the idol industry (like Mina). According to his friends, Kirishima’s hardening quirk, which he sees as boring, would not fly in today’s society. Now, Kirishima doesn’t care so much about what his peers think of him, but he’s still ashamed of his quirk, so he trains to harden his body and spirit, both literally and figuratively:
Tumblr media
Also much like Deku, Kirishima has his own hero he looks up to: Crimson Riot. He serves as Kirishima’s main source of inspiration. It’s where he gets his hardline traditionalism from, and also how he copes with having a quirk he sees as “boring”. Again, this is where he and Deku differ. Deku looks up to All Might in a fanboyish sort of way, which inspired him to strive to be a hero as well. Kirishima, on the other hand, not only sees Crimson Riot as an inspiration to be heroic, but also because they have similar quirks. It’s only natural for a child who’s been conditioned be ashamed of something they can’t help. It’s something I can personally relate to as someone who struggled a lot with sexuality as a teenager, and something many others can surely relate to as well. This makes our boy an effective source of inspiration as well.
Tumblr media
However, no matter how hard he trains, both physically and mentally, Kirishima still can’t train himself to not feel fear. It’s only natural for ordinary people to feel fear. After all, fear was what kept humans alive back when they were just starting out. Still, this goes against all of Kirishima’s ideals of what being a hero means. Sure, he has no problem standing up to some regular school bullies, but unlike him, Mina didn’t hesitate to act when her friends were cornered by a 30-foot tall villain in the street. She’s a prime candidate for UA, so what chance does he have of getting in if he can’t stand up to a literal supervillain?
Tumblr media
So, he gives up on his dreams of getting into UA. He didn’t act when it mattered. That was it for him. Even worse, the incident where Deku saved Bakugou from the slime monster made headlines. It was good that Horikoshi showed how this affected Kirishima, who was totally uninvolved, because it makes you think of what exactly that implies. After that incident, Deku was miraculously given a powerful quirk by All Might. Maybe if Kirishima were the protagonist, he would have been so lucky, but that’s not the case (more on this later). Despite this, Crimson Riot blesses Kirishima in a more indirect sense:
Tumblr media
In his frustration, Kirishima throws a book against the wall, and coincidentally, this hologram-looking thing of Crimson Riot starts playing, and it’s exactly what he needs to hear. As he listens, Kirishima realizes that not even Crimson Riot is immune to fear, but he copes with it by telling himself that failing to save someone because you didn’t do anything is far worse than charging in and giving it your best shot. That way, he can live his life without regret, which is, from then on, what Kirishima strives to do.
Tumblr media
Finally, with a fresh motivation to get into his dream school, our boy pulls through (and gets 2nd place in the entrance exams!). To commemorate this, Kirishima dyes his hair and vows to leave his past behind him, and Red Riot as we know him today was born.
This should surprise absolutely nobody, but Kirishima’s is my favorite backstory in the whole series, and to conclude this lil essay, I’m going to explain why. As I said before, his backstory is something a lot of people can resonate with. Feeling shame and self-doubt is something many people go through, and it’s prevalent with people who have conditioned themselves to feel ashamed of something beyond their control. Coming to terms with my bisexuality was a struggle for me, so I can definitely relate indirectly.
This ties into the SYMpathy vs EMpathy argument. A lot of backstories in My Hero Academia, or even media in general, are tragic in a way that not everyone can relate to (not criticism, just observation). Let’s take Todoroki, for example: he was essentially quirk-bred by his father and was abused by him, being trained to the point of overexertion. On top of that, his mother gave him the scar over his left eye, and he has carried that trauma with him his whole life. Not everyone had such a toxic upbringing, but Todoroki sure did, and many people feel sorry for him. In other words, they sympathize. Kirishima, to contrast, had a much healthier upbringing, but has a lot of internalized self-esteem issues that everyone can relate to (or empathize with). While sympathy is the capacity to feel sorry for someone, empathy is the capacity to UNDERSTAND someone. Don’t get me wrong, tragedy is often a crucial element to a story’s narrative (if it’s done well), but it’s sometimes more cathartic for the viewer to see a character overcome more everyday struggles, especially if they can understand them on a fundamental level.
The last argument I will make goes back to what I was saying about Kirishima not being the protagonist, and I think if he WERE, his origin story would not be nearly as impactful. One might say that Kirishima embodies the more stereotypical “hot-blooded” shonen protagonist than Deku does, and I agree to some extent. However, it works better for him to be a supporting character. In most shonens (like Naruto), the protagonist’s backstory is established right away, and as such, the viewer always sees their character in the context of what they were like in the past (we get it STOP SHOWING US THE FUCKING SWING--) In Kirishima’s case, his backstory comes into play much later, and by that point, we are already so familiar with his Red Riot persona that the revelation that he wasn’t always so eager and optimistic hits that much harder, and seeing how it contrasts with Kirishima as we know him in the present feels more rewarding. Yes, we get to see bits and pieces of it early on, like when he feels inadequate after meeting Tetsutetsu and seeing that their quirks are nearly identical, but seeing those feelings fully presented in his backstory only serves to drive that home. In short, we see, at a glance, how far he’s come since then, instead of being forced to watch the whole process from start to finish, and it works really well.
Another common trend among shonen protagonists, as I said before, is their tendency to be blessed with miraculous new abilities to make them special (and that includes Deku). Obviously, that didn’t happen with Kirishima. He had no pro-hero mentor to guide him, nor an all-powerful booster quirk to bolster his hardening abilities. He got to where he did through sheer perseverance and hard work, with only his idol’s words to keep pushing him forward. While Deku also had to work hard to get to where he is, fortune was on his side, and the fact that Kirishima pulled himself up by his bootstraps (so to speak) is, to me, a lot more admirable.
And THAT, my friends, is the core of why Kirishima means so much to me as a character, and even if he doesn’t become the #1 hero in the story, he’s my personal #1 hero. So, on that note, thank you for all your support, and as always...Stay sturdy!
tl;dr I FUCKING LOVE KIRI SO MUCH YOU GUYS

#Women’sHistoryMonth Spotlight: Brianna Pippens
Our next #Women’sHistorySpotlight is Washington D.C visual artist, @banana-peppers. Brianna expresses her freedom through her work, re-creating artworks through the lens of Black womanhood. Let’s dive right in.
Tell us about yourself. How did your love of creating art start?
My name is Brianna Pippens, artistically known as Banana Peppers. I am a visual and performing artist currently residing in Washington, DC. I grew up singing and dancing in various groups and fell in love with performing. I remember my parents taking me to museums and filling the house with paintings by and of Black people. Early on, the spark to create was there, but it wasn’t until college that I really began to see the potential to create on a larger scale and reach more people. I met other creative artists that really inspired me to tap into different mediums and create from my own perspective and I learned so much about the freedom there is in expressing myself, whether it’s with paint, or even digitally.
You created an incredible rendition of Girl with a Pearl Earring, in which the subject is a Black woman. Talk to us about the importance of that?
Girl with a Pearl Earring is a painting that I remember seeing a lot growing up and always, like many, wondered about the story behind it. I decided to recreate it because I wanted to show that the same allure and beauty could be found if she was a Black woman. I think it’s important for Black people, especially women, to feel seen in many different ways because we are multifaceted. The thinking is really tied to how a lot of people of color grow up watching shows and seeing images of people that look nothing like us but find connections to them in little ways. However, it’s not really the case when the situation is reversed. I think it’s important to normalize images of Black beauty and strength.
Tumblr media
How do you embody the mission of #BlackExcellence365 in your everyday work?
While I am on a path to becoming a full-time artist, I currently have a nine-to-five in a pretty non-diverse environment. I embody what I deem to be Black excellence by being my authentic self every day. Beyond that, in my day-to-day life as an artist, I put forth the best I can, paying homage to those before me that shaped who I am and how I feel as a Black woman in society. I also show the process of creating, which sometimes isn’t that glamourous, but a conduit to excellence nonetheless. Lastly, I think that I embody #BlackExcellence365 by celebrating my heritage and recognizing the magic that pumps through us by supporting and uplifting others.
If you had any advice for women succeeding in the art industry, what would be?
My best advice to women in the art industry is to constantly look for opportunities to share your work with communities of like-minded people. From posting fan art, I have been flown to Los Angeles to meet Jordan Peele and the cast of Us, I’ve been able to provide work for many film marketing campaigns, and have been able to get support from some of my favorite, most inspirational women, such as Cree Summer, Jada Pinkett Smith, and even Michelle Obama. Take risks and put yourself out there—it can be intimidating but so rewarding. Take the time you need and don’t stretch yourself thin, I know sometimes it can seem like a crazy idea to turn down an opportunity, but know that choosing what you want to contribute to and what you want to align yourself with is just as important as creating.
Thank you for sharing your story, @banana-peppers. We can’t wait to see what you create next! Tumblr, what is your favorite piece by Brianna?

Why Avatar: the last Airbender is probably one of the best shows ever written (Part two)
Ok ok WOW! I didn’t expect the last post to get so much hype! (I know it was only 19 notes at the time of posting this but for someone who has two followers this is a BIG deal, so thank you!) So if you haven’t seen the last part...umm..I guess go read that first? I mean, you could read this one first and then that one. I guess it doesn’t matter what order you read these in. Anyways, lets get to the point already. In the last post I mentioned just some of the reasons why this show is amazing, like the characters, the amazing representation, and the connections to everyday society and villains. Today I wanna focus in on the crazy good female representation, (yea this is a whole separate paragraph and gif set), the amazing bonds shown between characters, and in general, the visual and audio appeal of the show.
Right of the bat, season one episode one, you got the RAGING feminist we call Katara. Sokka makes one comment about her being a girl (don’t remember what exactly it was) and Katara immediately calls him out for it. And by “calls him out” I mean destroys and waterbends and iceberg to then free Aang and initiates the entire plot of the show.
Tumblr media
You get the point, right?
“Oh it was just one time, right?”
Nope! Again, three episodes later, and still not shaken by the literal wave of rage that Katara unleashed upon him, Sokka is still a sexist asshole. When they arrive on Kiyoshi island, the Gaang is promptly captured and taken prisoner by the Kiyoshi Warriors, who by the way, are entirely comprised of girls.
Tumblr media
For a show that came out in the early 2000′s, this is revolutionary. Imagine you’re a little girl watching this. How amazing and crazy would it be to see a group of fighters that are all girls? After being released, Sokka being the absolute flirt that he is goes to flirt with them. (Or mostly Suki) He’s then shown up and completely gets his ass kicked. Later, embarrassed and finally having learned his lesson, he comes back and asks to learn from them. Suki agrees and eventually, (after being dressed in FULL attire) trains him. So far that’s two women who have forcefully made Sokka chug his respect women juice. By the time Toph shows up in season two, he doesn’t even try to pick a fight with her. One of the other brilliant things that this show does is incorporate a female villain. Yes Firelord Ozai was always a threat, but Azula is truly the real threat in this show. she’s shown multiple times being more powerful than Zuko and ten times more threatening to Aang and his mission. Let’s just say that if it were up to Azula and the fire nation girl squad (that by the way consists of two incredibly powerful non bender females) to capture the Avatar, it would have been done much faster. Finally to seal the deal, we get this line from Suki: “I am a warrior, but I am a girl too.” Need I say more?
Second thing on todays list is the absolutely precious friendships, adorable romantic relationships, and crushes. Let’s just say that if you want to feel something after feeling numb for a long time, this show will do it for you. I know for certain it helped me. I was actually in the middle of feeling the mid quarantine slump when I started watching this show around June. I was bored, anxious, and feeling a bit numb after talking with my family and one other co worker for the past few months. This show and the friendships within it really helped me mentally. It gave me things to hope for, and made me dream about the future with my own friends. The bonds shared between team avatar are enviable to say the least. I mean come on! besides the fact that Katara and Aang are water bending in the background, the gif below is a normal pool day w/ the homies for Sokka.
Tumblr media
Not only are the platonic relationships in this show realistic and adorable, but the romance in this show is top notch. We see multiple healthy and normal relationships develop during the show, and it’s quite satisfying when things work out, the best example being Aang and Katara. Although there are some people who would disagree with me on this, Kataang is an ideal relationship. Throughout the show, both characters develop and grow because of each other. Aang is able to grow not only in his bending abilities, but he’s able to mature and realize his full potential because of Katara, all in a healthy and non rushed way. What starts out as a crush develops into a blossoming and equal party relationship, with both people contributing and receiving equal amounts of love. They balance each other out, and keep each other in check. They're able to bounce ideas (and water) off of each other and primarily are best friends before they’re love interests.
Tumblr media
Another relationship that has similar good energy is the one shared by Sokka and Suki. They both genuinely care about each other. Not only that, but as mentioned in the previous paragraph, Suki completely changes him for the better and Sokka throughout the whole series is loyal af to her. We even see him tell Ty Lee to back off when she flirts with him. Suki is his, and he’s hers while still allowing them to be their own individual and authentic selves.
Lastly, this show has the most incredible visuals and score. As far as TV shows go, the soundtrack is pretty amazing. So many people write this off as anime and it honestly pisses me off because it’s really not and theres so much more to it. (Not that there’s anything wrong with anime lol) The creators, (say it with me) aren’t dumb, and you can tell that plenty of thought went into background music to create the perfect mood for each scene. (My favorite thing about it is honestly the fact that Azula is represented by one ominous sounding chord and you immediately know that she’s about to fuck shit up.) The visuals and character design are also incredible, and even if the episode is dull, (by that I mean the great divide. Hey if your new to this do me a huge favor and skip right over that episode) the colors and scenery in this show, not to mention the bending scenes make it such a worthwhile watch.
Tumblr media
I mean tell me that that’s not incredible?
So that’s all I got for now! I may make a part three, but I need to see if I can pull together three more topics that I can go into in depth. Again, thank you so much for the support on the last one! :)
