Chapter seven : Stand by me.
Tumblr media
Jill was trying to come to her senses, to quell the fear that had overwhelmed her when she thought she was dead for good. She struggled to get back on her feet, her whole body, but especially her ribs, ached so much that she thought she was going to pass out from the pain. She saw Chris running down the side stairs of the building he had used earlier to get to the roof.
"Chris..." the call of his name sounded like a relief between her lips.
She staggered as she tried to reach him, her hand pressed against her left side. Once at the bottom of the stairs, Chris threw his machine gun on the floor to catch Jill against him, holding her tightly in his arms to keep her from failing. She clung to him as if he were a lifeline, praying that he would pull her out of this nightmare and onto solid ground, keeping herself from bursting into tears. She breathed a sigh of relief as she rested her forehead against the captain's shoulder. She had been so scared and he had saved her, once again.
"I've got you, Jill, I've got you. I'm here." Chris breathed against the young woman's temple. "I thought I was losing you, again."
She pressed her fingers into the fabric of his black turtleneck, she didn't want to let go. She had been so afraid of not seeing him again. Chris was pulling away from her slightly, but only so he could examine her thoroughly, to check that she had no serious injuries. He ran his thumb over the wound on her right cheekbone, the touch, brief and delicate as it was, soothing her for a moment. Behind them, Piers and Ricky could be heard coming down the metal stairs to join them. Jill finally lifted her gaze to look at Chris: "That woman.. She said the gas was the cause of all this.. Bindi she.."
She couldn't even get the sentences right, she closed her eyes for a few seconds, pressing her fingers against her forehead. Chris put his hands around her face to get her attention, which worked: "Jill, are you hurt?"
Their eyes locked again, Jill put her hand on Chris', almost intertwining her fingers with his. She took several deep breaths as she continued to stare at him, it seemed to help her regain her composure. She shook her head slowly and replied "No, I'm fine. I'm better now. Did you manage to stop Nanan?"
"No, we had to run away," Chris finally replied, "We quickly realised that her gas was dangerous, the narrow corridors of the health center did not allow us to deal with it properly. We retreated."
Jill nodded and looked over Chris' shoulder, noticing that Merah was missing. She feared the worst and she glanced over at Piers, "Where is Merah?"
"We got separated. Last I heard, she was on her way to the cathedral," Piers informed her.
"We need to get to her as soon as possible, if she's up against Nanan or Bindi she won't stand a chance," added Ricky.
"Jill, I think you've got a hit," added Piers.
Jill was pulling away from Chris as he took his machine gun back from Ricky. There, a few feet away from them, the giant was slowly getting to his feet, steam rising from his body. He was completely impervious to attack, so they had to find a way to blow up that bastard. Just like in Raccoon City, it was the only way to get rid of him. Definitely. Jill picked up her gun again and changed the magazine as she stared at the Tyrant: "Someone blew up our chopper."
"What? Are you sure?" questioned Chris, bewildered.
"Positive. I managed to get Ryan, for a few seconds but he..." She didn't finish her sentence, but the others knew exactly what she meant. "We're trapped here, we need to find a way out"
"Fuck..." blurted Chris, "There's an emergency helicopter in the basement of the academy. Mother Gracia gave Ricky the access code before she died."
Jill started to take a few steps to the side, she seemed to be assessing the giant, trying to figure a way stop him, "This asshole is after me, I’ll get him away from you and-" She stopped as she felt pressure on her wrist, Chris holding her back firmly.
"I'm staying with you," Chris said, his tone unmistakable. He turned to Piers and Ricky, "You two go find Merah. We clearly can't clear the area on our own, we'll meet in the underground control room. Jill and I are going to get rid of him”
Piers and Ricky both nodded and ran off in the direction of the cathedral. Jill stared at Chris for a long time, so much was going on in her head and in her heart. But she couldn't take the time to enjoy the moment. Her focus returned to the Tyrant who was approaching them at a slow pace, she raised her gun at him, finger on the trigger : "Follow us if you can, asshole!"

You're a Jinx! Chapter 1
chapter 1 is here guys !! you can also read it here on my AO3 and get it as soon as i publish the next chapter !! :)
This is going to get very dark, so reader discretion is advised as this is inspired by Powder and Vi's relationship from Arcane. read the drabble that inspired this here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jinx (Noun) is a Person or thing that brings bad luck.
One should never wish luck to someone about to start Hogwarts, as it is seen as a Jinx. Those words echoed from house to house in the wizarding world. Pureblood families created the rumour years ago, ever since a Malfoy heir was sorted into Hufflepuff in 1672. Not much was heard of him since he was written from the family and erased from history. It was September 1st, 1971. The platform was a hub of activity. The most Nobel house, Black, was finally in attendance. Their eldest and heir apparent was about to start his education at Hogwarts; the family was practically royalty to the wizarding world. All eyes were on them. Sirius wanted to scream; he hated how everyone looked at him like the sun shined out his arse. If only the rich pricks knew what went on behind closed doors. Sirius squirmed under the gaze of the Malfoy family; Orion, his father, noticed.
He always sees the slightest shift or snicker but never cares; he would rather drown in alcohol than deal with his 'family'. Their mother, Walburga, would dish out the punishment and then scold Orion for being a terrible father and a waste of a man. Deep down, Sirius felt sorry for his father, who was trapped in a loveless marriage. Sirius was lucky to spend time with a sober, more caring father once, even though it ended faster than it started when he tried to suffocate Sirius and his brother Regulus. Since then, Walburga kept the boys close to her, and Orion was full of enough alcohol to pickle his organs; it wouldn't stop his wrath, but it was better than being dead.
Walburga was chatting with her sister taking her much-needed attention from the boys as Orion shifted closer to his sons. Orion was pissed. He was sobering up. He hadn't had a drop since Seven this morning. Orion's grip on Sirius's shoulder was rugged, and the pressure caused Sirius to inhale sharply. Regulus found a spot on the floor more entertaining than what was about to happen. Regulus gave Sirius's Pinky finger a reassuring squeeze. 'I'm here', the gesture said. "I suggest you board the train, boy", Orion growled. Sirius could taste the whiskey on his father's breath. "Yes, Sir" Sirius turned to Regulus, his brother or maybe shadow? Their relationship was strange; people thought they were twins with how identical they were. If you found one brother, the other was indeed close by. Sirius looked Regulus up and down. His eyes were sunken in (they went to bed without dinner again) and still a little red from where he was crying in Sirius's room, begging him not to leave him alone. Sirius pulled Regulus into a tight hug muffling the sob leaving Regulus. "You will be okay. Just remember what I told you, okay?" Sirius Pulled away using the sleeve of his blazer to wipe the tears from Regulus' face. "Stay in my room and stay out of fathers way," Regulus choked. "And if I need food, ask Kreachur."  the conductor Blows his whistle kids that are still clinging to their parents start to peel away.
"Yeah, I have to go now. I love you, Reggie" Sirius embraced his brother again. "I'll see you at Yule in a few months." Regulus grips Sirius a little tighter. "Promise?" Sirius chuckles, ruffling his brother's hair as he looks up at him, eyes watery and faces a little snotty "I promise" Sirius planted a kiss on Regulus' forehead and left for the train.  Regulus ran after him, stopping at the window of the compartment Sirius had commandeered from two other boys, one with unruly black hair and thick glasses, the other a sandy blond with his face stuck in a book. The train let out a huff of steam, causing the wheels to turn. Regulus forgot all the etiquette lessons beaten into him, but it was worth it. "Bye, Sirius! Good Luck at school!" he screamed over the chugging of the trains. Sirius's eyes widened at the words that left Regulus, and the platform was hushed into whispers. The last thing Sirius saw of his family was the souring of his mother's face as she pulled Regulus to her and the flash of white-hot rage on Orion's face. Sirius Black had just been cursed with the worst possible jinx, and it was Regulus's fault.
Sirius dropped to the ground, head in his hands. Fuck. Everything is ruined. His life is cursed, but he can't blame his little brother; he just can't. If he were to blame anyone, it would be his horrible family. "I'm sure it will be okay, mate-" Sirius turned to look at the boy talking to him. Perfect clothes full of colour and life, glasses as thick as jam jars and hair so unruly he could only be a "Shut it, Potter! All you potters are so perfect you know nothing about me or my family!" Sirius stormed out of the compartment where he thought Andromeda was sitting. Remus puts his book down. "Well, that's an entertaining yet dramatic introduction, Remus Lupin, you?" Remus held out a scared hand. Perhaps one ally-friend would be lovely. James ran a hand through his hair, sighing and taking Remus's in a firm shake. "You're telling me those pureblood families are bonkers with all their rituals and junk... Names James Potter"
Sirius was too numb to feel any emotion; he just shut down and retreated to his mind. Andromeda, the sanest of the Black sisters, held Sirius's hands in hers, not saying anything but acting as a calming presence. Bellatrix was cackling further down the carriage with the Lestranges, and Narcissa was busing her hands with needlecraft. They were each a marvel of their own. Three witches born a year apart, Bellatrix, the eldest, resembled the crone; Andromeda, the middle child, was always forgotten but acted as a mother to anyone who needed one. And finally, the beauty and youngest, Narcissa. "I don't understand why you're getting so worked up over it, Siri." Narcissa sighed. "It's not like they can hurt you whilst you're at school." Sirius's leg stopped bouncing; it was true they couldn't hurt him, but they could still hurt Regulus. "Sissy, don't say things like that! You know how vile Aunt Wally can be when she is in one of her moods," Andromeda hissed; Narcissa just rolled her eyes, unbothered. "I'm sure Reggie will be okay, Sirius." Andromeda gave Sirius's hands a firm squeeze of reassurance even though, deep down, she knew Regulus was in danger. Sirius was still silent.
Regulus paced in his room, wringing his hands and muffling his sobs; he needed to calm down. He was so scared when they all got home from King's Cross that he ran to his room before any of his parents could register anything. It was 4 pm, and Regulus only knew by the ringing of the bell in the grandfather clock on the stairs. It chimed four times, that meant dinner wouldn't be long, and the thought of food made Regulus' stomach growl. Sirius swiped some bread rolls early this morning, and they ate them like little Victorian orphans. But the stress of the day and the emotional toll it took on Regulus meant that now he was hungry again, and he had no idea if he would be summoned to dinner. Regulus had run out of energy to continue pacing and decided to sit at his desk and pull out one of the leather-bound journals Sirius got him for his birthday. He flicked through the pages, some wrinkled by the tears he silently shed when he got a beating or worse. When Sirius took losses for him, Regulus flicked to a clean and pristine page and started to write. He didn't write just anything; he wrote his feelings down in poems so dark and moody they could rival Edgar Allen Poe, which was funny because he loved his work. Regulus had managed to calm down a lot more his breathing was less erratic, and he wasn't choking on every other breath. His hands had stopped shaking enough that he decided to switch to his sketchbook and draw more schematics of devices that would never be made.
Another hour had passed, and a shallow knock sounded at Regulus' door; he opened it slightly, noticing it was the greyed skin of Kreachur. His gravelly voice echoed, "Lord Black has Requested that the young Master is to attend dinner" Regulus was stunned; why was he allowed dinner? He licked his chapped lips and thanked Kreature for telling him; the house elf disregarded the thanks and continued his chores. Regulus closed his door and turned to his mirror, ensuring his clothes looked pristine and ready for dinner.  Regulus made his way down to the grand dining room; Orion, his father, sat at the head of the table. He was slumped in his chair, his head propped on his fist, and his other hand swirled a goblet of what could only be red wine. His mother sat next to him fiercely, staring at the covered table. If Regulus didn't know any better, he would assume her steely gaze kept the roast potatoes under the silver cover warm, not the centuries-old enchantments. Oppersit, his mother, was an unexpected guest. It was his Great Uncle Alphard—the current head of and Lord of House Black. Though Alphard was slowly losing his memory, he was adamant not to give up his title until Sirius came of age or, worse, he died; even though Orion had taken on most of the House's duties, Alphard still held significant sway in the matters that revolved around the family.  Alphard smiled at Regulus, winking at his nephew with a mischievous twinkle in his kind grey eyes, the same sparkle that Sirius had. Regulus took up his seat at the end of the table. "Sorry to keep you all waiting", his voice was quiet; if Alphard weren't here, Orion would be shouting at him to speak up and stop mumbling. Orion let out a growl, uninterested in the dinner before him; Walburga looked down on Regulus through her nose "No need for apologies, Regulus. Must be so nice to have the house and attention of your parents to yourself for a change" Alphard smiled, waiving his hand, causing the silver covers on the food to vanish. "I can't say for certain, Uncle, it's only been a few hours", Regulus said; he kept his voice steady and focused on one of the painted figures in China. Orion set his goblet down with force, causing a drop of the wine to splatter the cream tablecloth. Walburga tutted as she chose the smallest broccoli from the tray.
Growing up in such a family, Walburga refused to eat many foods. The best way to describe the woman was that she was an almond mum. She took the tiniest amount of food and refused to let her children eat anything void of flavour and spice. "Why have you paid us a visit, Alphard" Walburga drawled, grimacing at the three potatoes Regulus had piled onto his plate. "I have brought news of my heir, Sirius. It seems his sorting was quite the spectacle," Alphard boasted, causing Regulus to stiffen; this was it. The moment that would seal their fate. Regulus prayed to any deity that would listen that Alphard was going to say his brother was sorted into Slytherin like everyone else in his wretched family. "it appears my heir apparent is a lot braver than most has been sorted into Gryffindor" Alphard seemed to be happy, much to Walburga and Orion's faces.
Sirius Orion Black, the First of his name and Heir to the most recent and Nobel house of Black had been sorted into Gryffindor.
Walburga snapped her head to Regulus, her nostrils flaring with rage, but it wasn't what Regulus was afraid of. His father sat up from his chair, gripped his goblet tight, and launched it at Regulus. "You Fucking little JINX", Orion Roared. "You have made your brother disgrace our family", Alphard rose from his seat, restraining Orion, "I think it best you head to your room Regulus."
Regulus didn't get a mouthful of the roast potatoes as he ran from the dining room and up to his bedroom. It was his fault. Sirius is going to get disinherited, and it was his fault. Regulus doesn't want the title or the house or anything. He was a spare! Regulus tried to suffocate himself under his duvet but failed and cried to sleep again.

Secret Feelings
MAIN MASTERLIST
Steve Rogers x Reader
Word Count: 3,050ish
Summary: You and Steve are friends with benefits, both with secret feelings for each other. You finally decide to tell Steve you love him, but it goes wrong.
Warning: mentions of sex
Tumblr media
“That was…” you panted.
“Needed…” Steve panted.
You two were currently laying side by side in Steve’s bed, panting after finishing up another round of sex. It wasn’t uncommon to find you two in bed together after a tough mission. Or any mission for that matter.
It all started after a mission that had a close call about seven months ago. You had almost gotten taken out, but Steve quickly swooped in and saved you. When you arrived back at the compound, Steve was furious. You both were in your room, shouting at each other. He was angry at you for almost dying and you are angry at him for being angry at you. Before either of you were able to actually think about what was happening, his mouth was on yours and you were tearing each other’s suits off.
You too were pretty close friends before, but that first night started changing things. For the both of you. You both started falling in love with the other, but were both too scared to say anything. Each of the team members could see the love you two had for one another. From the way you two started cuddling during movie nights, to the way you two patched each other up after missions. It was obvious to them and kind of funny how obvious the two of you were.
“You know I can read minds and emotions, right?” Wanda said to you after she caught you staring at Steve laughing with Bucky one day.
“Huh?” You turned to her, having barely registered what she had said.
“Your love for Steve,” Wanda clarified. “It’s so loud. And don’t get me started on his love for you. I think the serum did something to project his thoughts and feelings more.”
“He doesn’t love me,” you shook your head. “We’re just close friends.”
Natasha scoffed. “Yeah, close friends that sleep together. All the time.”
“Why don’t you just tell him?” Wanda asked.
“Because I don’t want to ruin what we have,” you replied.
“I’m sorry, Y/N,” Nat started, “but what you two have is basically a relationship. One of you just needs to step it up and say something to make it official.”
You sighed, looking back at Steve. Maybe your friends were right. Maybe you should just gather up the courage and talk to Steve. You were sitting there, convincing yourself to finally tell Steve, when Agent Sharon Carter walked into the room. It was no secret to anyone that Sharon was after Steve. The woman didn’t try to hide anything when it came to her wanting Steve.
You watched as she made a beeline for Steve. Immediately touching his arm and forcing out a laugh to join with Steve’s and Bucky’s. Your jaw clenched, teeth grinding against each other.
“Your jealousy is rolling off you in waves, Y/N,” Wanda warned.
“That’s it,” you said. “I’m telling him tonight.”
~~~
You had spent the day in your room, trying to gain all the courage you could before admitting your feelings to Steve. Finally feeling ready, you took a deep breath before heading to Steve’s room. As you rounded the corner, you froze at the sight before you.
Steve was pushed up against the wall, his lips on Sharon’s. Sharon’s arms were wrapped around Steve’s neck and his hands were on her hips. You rushed back around the corner, leaning up against the wall. Your hand went up to cover your mouth, trying to stop the sobs that wanted to erupt from your throat. Tears cascading down your cheeks as you ran to your room. You didn’t even make it to the bed before collapsing into a puddle of sobs on the floor.
You stayed there until the early hours of the morning. When you finally felt like you didn’t have enough liquid in you to cry anymore, you pushed yourself of the ground. You were shaky as you made your way to the common room and the kitchen. All you wanted was a tub of ice cream and to go back to your room. You were grabbing everything you needed, when you heard happy humming coming closer. You looked up to see Sharon, humming, as she entered the kitchen. You couldn’t help but stare when you noticed at all she was wearing was a shirt. Steve’s shirt. When she noticed you, her face filled with fake concern.
“Oh my,” she gasped, coming closer. “Y/N, you look awful. Have you been crying?”
“It’s been a hard night,” you mumbled, getting back to what you were doing.
“I’m sorry… well, my night’s been great! I’ve been with Steve all night.” The metal spoon that you had just grabbed, clattering onto the counter top. “I do want to thank you though, for allowing Steve to have all that practice on you. It was truly wonderful.” Your dry eyes began filling with tears as your shaking got worse. “It’s finally nice to know he feels the same.”
And that was the last straw. You rushed out of the room, not caring about the mess you were leaving. You needed to get away from that woman. Away from the one Steve wanted. When you reached your room, you decided that you needed a break. You began throwing things in a duffle as you gave FRIDAY orders to tell Fury that you were going on a much needed vacation. You ordered the AI to tell Fury that it was a no contact vacay and that both Fury and FRIDAY needed to stop tracking you as soon as you left the building.
You snapped your duffle shut before reaching for your phone. Your hand hovered over it for a moment as you thought about whether or not to take it with you. If you did, Tony would be able to track you down as soon as the team noticed you were gone. If you didn’t, well, you were only going to be gone a few weeks at most. Right? You pulled your hand away before it could grab the phone. Pulling the duffle onto your shoulder before heading out of your room, and out of the compound.
~~~
Steve’s brain stopped for a moment as Sharon forced her lips onto his. His hands found a way to her hips. Not because it was natural, but because he wanted her off of him. After he finally got his brain functioning, he pushed her off of him.
“Oh, come on, Steve,” Sharon said, seductively, trying to get back back to what she was doing. “You know you enjoyed it.”
“Stop, Sharon,” Steve pushed her away again. “You know I don’t feel that way about you. I’m in love with Y/N.”
“But are you? It seems that you’re just using her to let off some steam.”
“I would never just use her. Yes, she deserves better than me being silent about my feelings. But I would never use her. If she said for me to stop and leave her alone, than I would. Because I love her.”
“But does she love you?”
“I hope. But whether she does or not, I will not be coming to you for anything, Sharon. I’m sorry, but we’re just friends.”
Then Steve entered his room, trying to gain the courage to finally confess his feelings to you in the morning.
~~~
Steve was alway an early bird. But today, he was extra early. He was finally going to tell you that he loved you. He was up making your favorite breakfast, planning on delivering it to your room for you. After carefully arranging the breakfast on a tray, he carried it to your room.
“FRIDAY, can you open Y/N’s door for me?” Steve asked the AI.
The door swung open and Steve entered. He looked around the room, immediately noticing that something was wrong. The bed had clearly not been slept in and various  drawers were open from your dressers, clothes falling out of them.
“Y/N?” He called, venturing in further. There was no answer and it was clear, you were not in here. “FRIDAY? Can you give me Y/N’s location?”
“Y/N’s location has been turned off,” FRIDAY replied.
“What?! Why? Who gave that order?”
“Y/N has requested some time off. She ordered me to stop tracking her after she left the building. Fury approved it as well.”
“Did she say why?”
“No. But she had spent most of the night crying.”
Steve set the tray down on your dresser, rushing to pull his phone out of his pocket. He immediately dialed your number. His heart dropped when he heard the buzzing of a phone on her bed. Slowly, Steve walked over to see your phone on your bed, ringing. A picture of the two of you was shining up at Steve with his name on the screen and a heart next to it. It was all taunting him. He grabbed the phone and rushed into the common room, where the rest of the team was eating breakfast.
“Y/N’s gone!” He yelled. Everyone’s head snapped for look at the captain. “She’s gone.”
“What do you mean she’s gone?” Natasha asked.
“Like, she’s not in the compound, I have her phone, and FRIDAY stopped tracking her.”
“Did the compound get broken into last night?” Bucky asked, turning to look at Tony.
“No,” the billionaire shook his head. “FRIDAY would have alerted all of us.”
“FRIDAY told me she requested time off,” Steve said. “But why would she do that without telling any of us?”
“Did anyone do anything to upset her?” Vision asked. Everyone looked at Tony.
“Hey! Woah!” Tony held his hands up. “I haven’t seen her in a few days. I’ve been held up in the lab. You should all be looking at lover boy over there.” Everyone turned to look at Steve.
“What did you do, punk?” Bucky wondered.
“Me?!” Steve pointed to himself. “I— I— nothing I can currently think of.” Just then, Sharon waltzed into the room. The rest of the team all had the same thought run through their heads. “You.” Steve pointed at Sharon. “What did you do to Y/N?”
“Well, good morning to you too, Steve,” Sharon replied, preparing herself some breakfast. “Now, what are you excusing me of?”
“You know exactly what,” Wanda responded, having entered Sharon’s mind. Wanda stood across the kitchen island, challenging the agent. “You tricked her into thinking that you and Steve slept together. And that he was only using her.”
“What?!” Steve exclaimed. “Why would you do that?”
“Because, Steve,” Sharon began, “I want you all for myself. And her and her feelings were in the way.”
“F-feelings?”
“Oh, please, Steve. You can’t seriously tell me that you couldn’t see that she was in love with you?”
“She was… in love… with me…”
“She was trying to gain the courage to tell you,” Nat explained. “Wanda and I were pretty sure she was going to last night.”
“Oh, and she was,” Sharon teased. “But I kissed Steve just in time.”
“Are you telling us, she saw you kissing Steve?” Bucky questioned. “And you knew she would?”
“Planned it all perfectly,” Sharon shrugged.
“Out,” Tony growled. “Get out of my compound. Now!”
~~~
Fury stopped by later that day, immediately getting bombarded by questions from the team.
“I do not know where Y/N went,” Fury responded. “She did not give me those details. She just requested the time off and told me to stop tracking her.”
“And you listened?” Steve asked.
“She’s the one that gives me the least amount of grief of all of you. I thought that she deserved it. She’ll be back, in two weeks.”
“Two weeks?!”
“Yes, she requested an extension this morning. I would suggest that all of you allow her this time. Y/N will be back, just give her space.”
~~~
But two weeks passed, that no one had seen or heard from you. Not even Fury. And that was stressing everyone out, especially Steve. They all were searching for you. But you were good, and weren’t making it easy on them. You didn’t want to be found, especially after the pregnancy test.
You were pregnant with Steve’s child. You had thrown around going back because of it. But you eventually decided that there was no way you were going to allow Sharon to co-parent your child. So you stayed hidden, preparing for your baby without anyone.
No one was there for you when your son was born, which you cried a lot about. Especially when you son was put in your arms. It looked too much like Steve for his own good. You named him James Steven, and you loved him more than anything in the world. He was ten months old with Tony showed up at your doorstep. You quickly tried to slam the door in Tony’s face, but he stopped it with his foot.
“Don’t even think about it,” Tony said, coming into the house. “You don’t get to push me away. We’re family.”
“Were,” you corrected, holding James close.
“That’s your choice, not any of ours.”
“How did you find me?”
“You made the mistake of showing your face to a grocery store security camera. Don’t worry though, I came alone and no one knows I’ve found you yet. I wanted to talk to you alone first.”
“Have a seat,” you gestured to the couch. “I’m just going to put the baby down for a nap.”
Tony nodded, moving to sit on the couch. He looked around, taking in the little house you’d been living in since you left the compound. It was cute. There were pictures hung up all around of you and your son. But nothing from before that. You quietly came back in and sat on the other end of the couch.
“Cute son,” Tony commented.
“Thanks,” you replied nervously.
“He Steve’s?”
You sighed, looking down at your fidgety hands in your lap. “Yes. His name is James Steven.”
“Have you been raising him alone?” You nodded. “You know you didn’t have to.”
“I know… I just couldn’t stand going back knowing that Steve had feelings for Sharon.”
Tony scoffed. “That bitch tricked you, Y/N. She did all that to make sure you’d leave and she could have him. But Capsicle is too in love with you to move on.”
“What?” You quietly gasped.
“He’s still in love with you. When he’s not stupidly risking his life on missions, he’s still searching for you. He misses you, we all do.”
You bit the inside of your cheek and turned to face away from Tony. You still loved Steve too, after all this time. But you never imagined that he would still be searching for you.
“Come home,” Tony begged. “Bring James and come home.”
“I don’t know, Tony…” You shook your head. “Steve can’t possibly still love me after the way I left. He—“
“But I do,” another voice said. Your head snapped up to see Steve standing in the entry way. “I still love you, Y/N.”
You studied him. He had grown a beard and the bags under his eyes were more prominent, but he was still the same Steve.
“I’m going to go watch my new nephew sleep,” Tony hurried out of the room as Steve walked around the couch.
“I should have told you sooner,” Steve continued. “And there were so many times I wanted to, I was just scared. I realize now that was foolish of me.” Steve sat on the couch, close enough so your knees were touching. “You never had to run away.”
“I just… I thought—,” you stammered.
“I know what you thought. And Sharon was kicked out of the Initiative the next day.” He reached over and carefully took your hands in his. “I never felt anything for her, Y/N. My heart has always belonged to you.”
“I’m so sorry, Steve,” you quietly cried. “I over reacted. I just couldn’t be near you two if you were going to be with her. And then once I realized I was pregnant…. I couldn’t stand the thought of co-parenting with her.”
“It’s okay, it’s okay. I never have held anything against you. Yes, I do wish that I got to help you through the pregnancy and been there when my son was born, but that doesn’t change how I feel about you. And our son.”
“Oh, Steve.” You wrapped your arms around him and pulled yourself into him. “I love you.”
He quickly held you close. “I love you too.”
Crying came from down the hall before Tony’s shouts, “I promise I didn’t do anything! I just wanted to hold him!”
You and Steve both chuckled. “Do you… um… do you want to meet him?” You asked Steve.
“Yes,” he nodded.
You grabbed Steve’s hand and led him to your son’s bedroom, where Tony was trying to figure out how to calm him.
“It’s okay, Tony,” you said. “I’ve got him.” You took James from his arms. “It’s okay, sweetie. Mommy’s here.”
“I’ll just go out and let the team know they can come in now,” Tony said.
“Team? I thought you said you were alone?”
“Well I kind of lied about that. You’ll thank me later.”
Tony pressed a kiss to your cheek before leaving. James was cooing in your arms, reaching up for you. You lightly bounced him as you walked towards Steve.
“Do you want to met your dad, James?” You asked the baby.
“James?” Steve repeated.
“James Steven Rogers,” you clarified. “Hold out your arms.” Steve did as he was told. “Be careful with his head,” you directed as you slipped James from your arms to Steve’s. “There you go.”
A smile grew on your face as you watched Steve hold his son for the first time. Steve smiled as he quietly talked to his son. He looked over at you, waving you over. You walked over allowing Steve’s arm to wrap around you and pull you into his side. He leaned down and kissed you, trying to pour all his love into it while still minding the child in his arm.
“I love you,” he whispered. “And I’m never letting you go again.”
The Last of Us Part 2 (Joel x Reader)
Bonus Chapter: How (y/n) and Joel met
Tumblr media
The Last of Us Part 2 Masterlist
"Okay, one frappuccino." One of my co-workers, Miranda, shouted as she hands the cup to the customer while I worked on another order. "Man, just seems like it won't stop." My friend, Kelsey, said and I nod. "Yeah..." I said as I grabbed another cup and start to make a new drink.
"Ooohhh....check out the guy that just walked in." Kelsey said and I look up and see a man with black hair and a beard, wearing a t-shirt and jeans, walking in with a little blonde haired girl holding his hand. Aww, that's cute. I thought as I look at them. "Damn..." Kelsey said, her eyes roaming the guy as he comes up to the register and talks to Miranda.
"Mmm...damn, Mr Cowboy there....I'd like to take him to the rodeo." Kelsey said and I slap her shoulder. "Whoa down, girl." I said and she chuckles. "Oh come on, don't tell me you wouldn't love a round with Cowboy there." Kelsey said and I look over at the man as he pays for his drinks then he and his little girl go to a table.
"I mean...he is very handsome...but...knowing my luck, he's probably already married. He has a kid." I pointed out. "So, that don't mean nothin'. Could be a single dad?" Kelsey said and I roll my eyes.
"Hey, (y/n). Can you take this iced tea to table 2? I'm going to lunch." Miranda said as she walks past us. Kelsey and I exchanged looks then rolled our eyes and I take the cup and start to walk towards the table.
Suddenly, I stumble and I lose my balance, the tea slips out of my hand and lands on to Mr Cowboy, as Kelsey called him. "Oh shiii....shoot." I said, stopping myself from cursing in front of his kid, as I get up to my feet. "Sir, I am so sorry." I said, panicked, while his daughter was giggling behind her hand.
"It's alright." He said to me as I go and grab napkins for him. "Just lucky it wasn't coffee or hot tea." He said and I smirk a bit before I hand him the napkins. "Oh then you'd definitely be steaming hot." I said, jokingly, and I glanced over him and noticed that his cheeks turn a bit red while the girl laughs at this. Then he begins to dry himself off while I grab more napkins and clean off his table.
"Now you have a new cologne, dad. Sweet Tea Eau de Parfum." The girl jokes and I chuckle a bit while her father rolls his eyes. "Hey, if every guy wore a sweet tea cologne instead of that Axe body spray crap, every woman would throw themselves at them." I said and the girl smirks a bit.
"Well you're the first to notice then." The man said and I glanced over at him and I felt my face burn up as we share a smile at this. Then I turn my head, quickly, then cleared my throat and said. "Anyway...I'm very sorry about all of this, if you want me to..." then the man raised his hand.
"Ma'am it's alright. Accidents happen. Though I would be more worried about the person who bought that drink." He said, chuckling a bit then I jumped slightly at this. "Oh yeah, right." I said and I go throw away the napkins then ran back to redo the drink.
After everything is said and done, I go back to the counter when Kelsey pulls me to the side. "I saw you getting a little cozy there with the cowboy, there." She said, with a smile. My face heats up again at this then said. "No, no i-it was an accident." I said and she chuckles. "Uh-huh, is that what you call it?" She asked and I rub the back of my neck.
"Well, I don't want to alarm you but...he kept stealing glances at you. I think he was staring at your ass as well." She said and I gasp then slap her on the shoulder. "Shut up!" I said, embarrassed.
"Hey, you need a new man in your life. I mean, I know that whole shit with Markus has hurt you but....you've gotta move on. It's been a couple of years. Plus, when I delivered cowboy's drink, I didn't see a wedding band." Kelsey said and I look down then let out
"But...I barely know this guy." I said, nervously. "Well you won’t know unless you try. Also who knows, maybe after you two hit it off, you might just find a ring on your finger." Kelsey said and I roll my eyes again. "Yeah, right, Kel. Me, married?" I scoffed. "Hey, it could happen...if not then I'm sure he'd be a great one night stand." she said and I scoff again while Kelsey looks over my shoulder.
"And from what I can see, it looks like his kid is doing some matchmaking also." Kelsey said and we turn to where the man and his daughter are sitting.
They looked like they were in some sort've deep conversation and his daughter must've said something as his face begins to turn red. Then he looks up at me and both of us stared at each other. I give him a smile before I turn my head away, quickly, and pushed a loose strand of hair behind my ear. I do a quick look back at him and see that he was trying not to look at me but I saw his eyes dart towards me.
"Come on, (nickname), he looks like he's interested in you." Kelsey said and I bite my lips at this, thinking over what she said and what happened.
Few Months Later
I let out a sigh as the morning rush finally finished. "Man, I need a drink." Kelsey said, exhausted, as we stand in the back of the shop. "I know, right?" I said while I wipe away the sweat from my forehead. "Thought it would never end. So fuckin' stressed."
"Maybe you could call up your cowboy and ask him to come by. And then you two could have a quickie in the back. You know, relieve some stress." Kelsey said, wiggling her eyebrows. "Kel, stop! Joel is too much of a gentleman for that." I said as I shove her shoulder.
After the whole tea spill incident, the man and his daughter, which they introduced to me as Joel and Sarah Miller, started coming by the shop almost every day. We would talk and get to know each other a bit, plus I guess you could say there was a bit of flirting between me and Joel but I still wasn't for sure if this was just one of those friendly flirting or he was actually interested in me.
"Oh, I'm sure he wouldn't oppose it." She said and I shake my head at this. "I'm not sure if he even likes me in that way." I said. "Bitch, come on! He is totally in to you!" Kelsey exclaims. "I can see it on his face whenever you guys talk."
I give a small smile at this as I feel my face heat up. "See? You're into him as well! Your face goes red everytime we talk about him. You smile and laugh more and you seem elated everytime he comes here." she said to me. "Okay, so...maybe I do have a crush on him but...I just...I don't know...how do I know if he feels the same way?" I asked just as the bell rang from the front door, alerting us a new customer has come in.
Kelsey looks over my should and smiles. "Why don't you ask him yourself." She said and she nods forward and I turn around to see Joel walking in and I smile, my heart leaping for joy when I saw him. "Good luck." Kelsey said as she lightly nudges me and I walk up to the register.
"Hey." I greet him.
"Howdy." He said and my heart thumped in my chest, rapidly. Then I looked at the clock up on the wall and noticed he was here early, usually he was here in the afternoon with Sarah but now it was the middle of the day and she wasn't with him.
"You're here early." I pointed out and he gives an embarrassed smile at this. "Sorry, when you work at a coffee shop, you tend to know the routine of regulars. Didn't mean to sound like a stalker." I said, trying to joke around. "Nah, it's fine. Actually, I'm here early cause I wanted to talk to you." He said and ny eyes widen a bit.
"Um...do you have a moment?" He asked and I turn to Kelsey, who nod enthusiastically. "Sure. The rush is done for now. We can talk over there." I said and I nod to one of the tables nearby. He smiles at me and I leave go around and meet up with him, both of us head towards a table.
Once we get there, he pulls out a chair and gestures for me to sit down. "Such a gentleman." I said and he smiles at this as I go and sit down in the chair. "So what do you wanna talk about?" I asked him as he sits across from me.
Then I gasp and place a hand over my chest, pretending to be upset. "You're not seeing another coffee shop behind my back, are you?" I asked and he chuckles at this. "No, no. It's not that..." he said and I let out a sigh of relief. "Oh good!" I sighed and both of us chuckle, which made my heart jump once I heard him chuckle.
"I came by early because....well...I wanted to ask you something." He said and I raise an eyebrow at this. "Oh?" I said and he nods. "You don't have to say yes, if you don't want to..." he said and I start to smile. "Well depends...is it legal?" I asked and he chuckles a bit. "Yes, it is. Um...I wanted to ask you...if you were doing anything tomorrow night?" He asked and I felt the breath leave my body.
Is he asking me out? I thought and I stammer a bit. "N-n-no. I have nothing going on tomorrow. Just hanging around my apartment." I said and he smirks again. "Oh good. Cause I was wondering if you..maybe...would like to go to the movies with me tomorrow night? Just the two of us." He said and my heart leapt for joy at this. "You don't have to if you don't want to. I would understand...it's just..." he started to stammer as I sat there, shocked.
I couldn't believe that he was asking me out on a date! This has to be a dream! I subtly pinch my arm to make sure I wasn't dreaming but I was still there; so this wasn't a dream, this was real!
"I would love to." I said as my lips curled up into a smile as I said this. He looks over at me in shock, I guess he was surprised about my response. "Really?" He asked me and I nodded. "Really really." I said, chuckling at the look of relief on his face.
"Okay then. Um, I'll pick you up at seven?" Joel asked me. "Yeah sure. If you want I can give you my number and I can text you my address." I said and he nods. We exchange numbers then we stare at each other for a moment, a comfortable silence between us before he runs his hand behind the back of his head.
"I better go. I'll see you tomorrow?" He said and I nod at him. "Yeah, I'll see you." I said and he smiles again then he leaves. I place my hands over my mouth then looked over at Kelsey, who had this I told you so look on her face.
"I am a fuckin' psychic!" She exclaims and I roll my eyes and laugh. At that moment some customers come in and I bite my lips, trying to contain my excitement, then I head back over to the counter to help Kelsey with the orders.
I don't know where this whole thing between me and Joel will lead to but I have a weird suspicion that somehow, some way, it'll be worth it.
To Study (Insects) │ 1
Tumblr media
Pairing: Clark Kent (MoS) x Original Female Character
Warnings: None
Word Count: 3k~
Summary: Connie and Clark, two peas in a pod. She didn’t know if it was his soft blue eyes or his Mother’s sweet blueberry pie that had caught her eye, but boy howdy, was she caught.
A/N: Nothing! Enjoy!
Tumblr media
The best thing about living in Kansas was that nothing ever happened.
There was a mile wide sprawl of corn that was breathtaking to few; it had started out as nothing much but rows upon rows of dirt that now bore sprawls of golden richness that could truly blind any tourist with its beauty.  Most of it was picked and sold—Kansas was full of rural farmers and farmers markets, but some just stayed for show.
And the Farmers Market typically consisted of stay-at-home mothers trying to sell their overpriced sugary sweet lemon bars to any sucker who would pay seven dollars for four measly pieces.
Most of the teens at the local high school got rides home from their parents, but Connie Mayfield knew that you couldn’t pay her Father, Walter, to pick his daughter up from school. If he did, then he’d no doubt miss a rerun of Baywatch, and that simply couldn’t happen.
A tune that rivaled the airiness of a flute flew from the 14 year olds mouth on her long walk home. Connie Mayfield whistled a nonchalant melody as her uneven pace took her closer to home.
The young girl had a lot on her mind; there was a test on Friday that was covering another form of division that looked to confusing to follow, and Alice’s birthday party was on Saturday and getting a gift for the little girl who had everything was harder than it seemed. The years of gifts consisting of dolls and bright hairbrushes were long over. Maybe she’d like a new bracelet or a set of earrings.
An irregular rock bumped against the tip of her shoe and she grinned, lobbing it off into the cornfield, a little thud echoing through the golden maze.
It was tempting—the idea of taking the not so short shortcut through the tall stalks, if just to feel a little more free for just a moment, but the sounds of distress just up ahead had her little sneakers speeding up. She turned to the bend and grew furious at the sight of three boys throwing around her friend.
“Hey!” she bellowed, running closer before screeching to a halt in front of the teen holding up her friend by the lip of his shirt, “Leave him alone!”
Isaiah Matthews grinned with his fist still clutching the younger boy's shirt, “Oooo, is this your girlfriend, Kent?”
Clark Kent sneered up at the taller boy, fists clenching in rage.
“Leave her alone,” he grit out, watching Isaiah sneer with confidence.
“I didn’t take you for a pussy, Kent, but I guess I was wrong.” He dropped Clark with a grin and sauntered to the near growling girl.
“Connie, right? My dad says you Mayfield’s are trailer trash, and I can see where he gets that from.”
His eyes gave her a visible up-and-down, “No wonder only a freak would like you.”
The words had barely left his mouth before Clark launched himself onto the back of the bully, pummeling him to the ground with hateful eyes. The two other lackeys ran, but Connie went and pulled Clark back before he did something he’d regret. The two of them fell away from the older boy, watching him with guarded eyes.
Isaiah spat at ground near their feet, “Fucking freaks.”
Connie waited until he was out of sight, turning to Clark and frowning at his disheveled appearance. “You know, I’m not always gonna be here to save you, Clark.”
He wiped away the sheen of dirt and sweat covering his upper lip, refusing to meet her eyes. “I didn’t need your help. I could’ve handled it.”
“Oh yeah, you totally had it under control,” she mocked with pursed lips.
He frowned at her sarcasm and picked up his dirtied school bag, looking down the path home. It was a quick walk to the farm, and mom had probably already started dinner, which is why it made no sense when he turned and muttered, “Can I walk you home?”
Her eyes went wide at his question, upper teeth nibbling on her pink lip, shrugging, “Sure, if you want.”
They both nodded and started a slow walk to the Mayfield’s. Connie’s fingers twitched at her side while different conversation starters nearly passed through her lips every few seconds. The urge to ask why he never fought back, why he let people call him a freak raced through her mind, but only silence hung between them. It was almost annoying that he never stood up for himself.
There was something mysterious about Clark that intrigued her 14-year-old brain; no one had ever let him live down that time he’d locked himself in a closet (and torched the doorknob till it was bright red).
He was just the guy who kept to himself most of the time.
And still she kept on eye on him the entire time, watching his own twitching fingers pick at the loose lining of his jeans, lip biting in a matter similar to her own, brows furrowing in thought, though they always did that. He looked cute when he was deep in thought.
Cute? I think Clark is… cute?
A deep redness flooded her cheeks and her lips pursed into a thin line, trying not to visibly speed away from the other boy, but Clark noticed everything. There was something keen about the way his mind worked; almost predatorial.
“Are you okay?” he asked, the cute furrow in his brow deep as she faced him while willing away the redness of her juvenile cheeks.
She nodded but didn’t meet his blue eyes. They were like oceans—I’d swim in Clark’s eyes if he’d ask—and her stomach always fluttered when he looked at her.
She expected them to fall back into silence, now halfway to the Mayfield farm, but Clark piped up, “Are you excited for the field trip tomorrow?”
A flutter of excitement rang through her veins, but she held back and simply nodded. “It’ll be a nice change from sitting inside all day.” Clark nodded along with her running words, “I heard the museum has a section on insects and their habitats, and I hope they have a butterfly display. Or—or maybe a real entomologist will be there.”
Now bugs- those were cool. Anything from crickets to butterflies to beetles, each one more interesting than the last…except arachnids. You could keep those eight-legged freaks as far away as humanly possibly.
Clark slowed their pace but kept his distance, “Is that what you wanna be when you grow up?”
She grinned and tried to slow the internal monologue of bug talk.
“I think when I grow up, I’ll leave this place behind and follow my dreams.” She said.
“And I guess those dreams do include insects of all types. They really do get a bad reputation sometimes. I think they’re just as delicate and interesting as humans.”
“Really?” Clark wrinkled in his nose, “My dad sprays the fields for bugs in the summer.” She hit his shoulder as he let out a snort, “I think I’ve squashed a few flies for mom too.”
She shook her head and couldn’t see Clark staring at her golden locks as they shined in the sun. “You’re the worst, Kent.”
The both chuckled and came to a halt in front of the Mayfield farm. It was more run down than the other houses in the area and the roof could’ve been mistaken for caving in, and she knew it looked worse on the inside. The moldy green color of the roof had seen better days, and the porch could barely hold the old rocking chair that her dad liked to sit on in the mornings. Clark would never know how the inside looked even worse.
“Do you know what you wanna be when you grow up?” She asked with a soft smile, taking no offense as Clark tried, once again, not to meet her eyes. The swoop of his brown hair was nearing the tops of his eyes, but she knew he wasn’t inclined to cut it. He didn’t buzz his hair like the other boys.
“I…” He paused, foot kicking the uneven dirt under his shoes. He bit his lip lower lip and finally, after what seemed like an eternity, met her honey eyes.
“Yes?”
He took a deep breath and lightly shrugged, “Sometimes, I feel like I don’t know who I am. I think I wanna figure that out first, ya know?”
No, she didn’t know but asking Clark to explain how he felt could feel like pulling teeth. Golden honey stared into the aquamarine sea, two sets of young lips wet and wanting, and Connie picked at her pants, nails bending with surprising force.
The door to the Mayfield hold slammed with a grotesque force, and the two teens jumped away from one another as Walter Mayfield grunted his way to them, to Clark.
“’Thought I told you to stay away from my daughter, Kent!” Walter bellowed, nearing the fourteen-year-old clear-eyed boy who showed no sign of backing down with his head held high and chest jutted out.
“I don’t want you lookin’ at her, touchin’ her—“
Connie finally yelled, “Dad!” and stood between him and Clark, protecting her friend from the unjustified anger of her dad. She felt Clark’s fingers grip the back of her shirt and tug her closer, just as Walter stood over them with beady eyes and steam shooting from his ears.
“Get in the house, Connie.” Her dad growled, never looking away from Clark.
But she shook her head and pushed against her dad’s chest, ignoring Clark’s fingers still gripping the back of her shirt. “We weren’t doing anything, go back inside, please.”
A startled yelp left her throat as her dad’s strong fist lurched her forward by the front of her shirt, throwing her to the ground and out of Clark’s grip. The air left her lungs and the dirt felt dry under her fingertips, watching as Clark seemed to vibrate in place, glaring deadly at Walter.
“If I ever see you ‘round here again, Kent.” He spat, “I’ll make you wish you were never born. Are we clear?”
The threat hung between the adult and young teen, and Clark tightly nodded and stalked off down the dirt path, not once looking back at Connie, never seeing the tears in her eyes.
Walter stared down at his daughter with a sneer, “Get inside. I won’t say it again.”
The dried dirt caked under her nails as she scrambled to stand and bolt inside, not taking note of the woman asleep on the couch that she’d never seen before, or the beer bottles covering the kitchen counters. The stairs creaked as she fled upstairs and shut her bedroom door, clicking the latch in place. A heaviness sat in her chest as her backpack thumped to the floor.
Beaded tears fell down her thick cheeks and light cries sounded through the room.
Tumblr media
“—I want that boy away from my son!” the mother of Peter Ross screeched from the Principal's office. “Am I the only one who understands the situation? That boy lifted a bus from a lake. A bus! What kind of monster are we allowing to walk with our children?”
The meek father of Alice pepped up, “But—But he did save them, right?”
“It doesn’t matter, Martin. I don’t feel safe with him here, and neither should any of you.”
Martha Kent hung her head and left the Principal's office, ignoring the calls from the desperate parents. There was nothing else she needed to hear from them, especially insults about her son. The door shut with a click, and her heels clipped the floor with each step.
She did her best to smile at Clark, but he’d always seen right through that. He sat up straight and looked her in the eyes, his soft voice rivaling his posture, “How did it go?”
She knew Clark had heard every word already and that lying would only make him defensive. “About as well as you’d expect, honey.” She patted his shoulder and ushered him to stand, “C’mon, let’s go home.”
The car ride was silent aside from the tapping of Clark’s blunt nails on the fabric of his jeans, and the shaking of his leg. He was such a nervous boy—her Clark—and it pained her heart to see him to try to hide how this whole thing was tearing him up inside. They normally played the radio, Clark usually flipped stations and rarely settled on just one, but silence was all they heard.
Jonathon Kent watched his wife pull up, and frowned as Clark bolted from the passenger seat and fled into the backyard. He stepped outside just as Martha shut off the car and gingerly stepped out, walking into her husband’s arms with a deep sigh. Exhaustion ran deep in her veins, and Jonathon wished he could take it away.
“That bad, huh?” He muttered into her brown locks, feeling her nod into his chest.
“Talk to him.” She begged, trying to keep the tears at bay, “I think…I think it’s time he…” They both turned to face the barn with heavy hearts, knowing this would be for the best.
Jonathon nodded and released Martha, shooting a thin-lipped smile her way as he made his way to the backyard. His heart thumped as he eyed his son, whose legs were hanging off the back of his pickup, shoulders hunched in his blue hoodie. As he got closer, he could hear the sniffles from his son.
“Clark.” His son turned and wiped away the wetness on his cheeks. “I just want to know what happened. I’m not mad, I promise.”
Jonathon sat next to his son and watched his boys lip quiver. His words came out with a thin veil of pain, “I wasn’t thinking, Dad.” A hiccup escaped his throat. “She was so scared… I just couldn’t let her die."
The water was rising too fast—it was cold and soaked the kids instantly— and Clark watched as Connie grew frantic in her efforts to open the window enough to crawl out, or maybe she was trying her best to keep the water from flooding the already half submerged bus. Cries and screams rang through the drowning bus, and Clark swam, trying his best to make it to Connie
“Connie!” He yelled, reaching forward to snag her shirt and pull her away from the stream of flowing water.
“Oh god, Clark! We’re gonna die!”  Her screams were shrill and almost hurt his ears, but the smell of her fear mixed with the smell of tears and piss coming off the other students had him looking for a way out.
But the water was nearing the top of the bus, and all he could hear was her cries.
“Son, I thought we talked about this.” He started, patting his own thigh, “We have to keep what you can do a secret.”
“They were all going to drown, how could I have done nothing? They didn’t deserve to die.”
“Clark, I just—“ Jonathon paused, watching the sunshine across the cornfield that spanned miles upon miles. It was an array of reds that shined upon the old graying barn.
“I just want to protect you, son. And sometimes, when people see something they don’t understand, they get scared and lash out. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if something happened to you.”
And finally, Clark asked the question that Jonathon had known would always come.
“Why am I like this, dad? Why am I so different from everyone else?”
Memories of finding their son, raising him to be the young man who sat at his side—through all the times he’d been different than the other kids, and knowing all of the hardships that were yet to come. It was almost enough to make him cry.
Almost.
Jonathon stood up from the truck and stood in front of his son, placing both hands on his small shoulders. “I’m going to show you something, son, and it may make things make a bit more sense. But no matter what—“ He pressed his palm to his sons chest and smiled,
“You are my son.”
39. Part 4
Tumblr media
I am worried about Maurice and where he is, I have not called him because I think I am the last person he would like to speak too right now. They want me to call him, when I say they I mean my mom inviting my aunties and my grandparents back to the house, they want to make amends with him but I don’t think Maurice will want it and it’s another sign of disaster, I don’t wish to speak to any of them at all. I just want Maurice to come back, but he hasn’t turned up yet and it’s been about three hours now, Leon placed his hand over mine. Looking down at his hand and then looked at his face “you got me” he said in a whisper “always” I said while holding his hand “you think I did bad by not saying anything?” I am sure Leon would tell me how it is “you seemed to be in your own world, you have been quiet. I don’t know, I think you should have told them to stop. Like, I don’t know. Say if you was my fiancé and let’s say for example you come to my home, and my grandparents started saying she is a whore, her family is trash, she is a horrible person. So is the family and kept saying it and then looked at you like shit and I sat there, didn’t say a word. Watched it go on, how would that feel?” shaking my head “not nice” Leon nodded his head “you would feel as if why, I think I understand what you are going through but you should have said, look this is my man and I am marrying him. Do you feel that way? You know with what Colin said, about being the second wife, them buying you out? You feel that way? I mean this whole decision has been Maurice, have you ever wanted to get married this quick?” Leon asked, I haven’t really thought about it “he asked, and I felt like I needed to do it for him, I want a dream wedding because it’s my first time. Probably waited it out but he ran with it. And yes, he will make it special for me but I told him I wanted more kids and he wasn’t happy but he would do it for me and I felt obliged in saying yes in that sense of he will do that for me, I do this for him but it does worry me. He’s a great guy but his battle is far beyond me, the more he comes popular the more I feel strained and scared. I don’t want my daughter to feel she has to have the business but it’s a sealed deal, I don’t have the heart to say this to him because Maurice is always feel steam ahead, the only reason I had him to myself is because he was really ill, New York is scary and I am going to be alone there in a seven storey million dollar home” shaking my head “I think you should be able to tell him no, I think with the Vegas thing you be adamant in saying no. Robyn please make sure you don’t let him go, friend this makes me sad. Why don’t you tell him no, you are right in the fact this is your first time and you want it a big wedding?” the front door opened, he is back “because I love him, just not the life around it” Maurice is not happy, he is theleast impressed seeing this.
“Shall I just go to my hotel? Because I ain’t come back for this” he said “he wants to apologise, they all do Maurice” my mom said, getting up from the chair “look, Terry. I like you, you are a great woman but I can’t have people like that in my life, I have my own uncles like this and I have no choice with them but with this I do, I don’t want your dad near my home, Gloria you sign the paper or you don’t come. Kathryn, you can stay with your bitter husband or you come. Robyn ain’t saying shit so I will, I didn’t want trouble with any of you, but looks like you all have, there you go and keep your sorry. Don’t care now” standing next to my mom, crossing my across my chest “how sad is your life they have to make people sign paperwork, don’t trust many people do you” my granddad hasn’t finished, clearly “you right, I don’t but I trust Robyn enough to not have her sign a prenup, but I am doubting that now” my face dropped staring at Maurice “let’s talk” Maurice walked off, watching him go upstairs “is that what you want to get married into?” my granddad said “dad! Stop it, just stop. You said apologise, not this” walking off to go upstairs, I can’t believe he just said that when I have done nothing wrong, like I said to them I have to deal with this.
I am fuming, they really tried to belittle me and then on top of that I come here, and they have his old ass here. I can’t even deal with this shit, I don’t want to be harsh but I will be, how can I trust Robyn when she can’t have my back, how can I let Robyn take my name when she can’t take up for me, it’s fucking stupid. Maybe I am being dumb and not doing the prenup thing, but I should trust her, how can I trust her like this. Now I am very much pissed off, Andrew was trying to get me to calm down and have weed but I refused, I don’t want that to be honest I just want to talk to her if she ever comes upstairs. Sitting down on the edge of the bed, the bedroom door opened. Shaking my head rolling my eyes “you wanted to talk” Robyn closed the door “why are you acting like you did nothing wrong? You wanted to talk, so? What was that?” I don’t get her “you met my family, what else you want?” is she even with me on this “right, so because irrational Robyn was still angry that I was going to Vegas, the fact I didn’t even know about it but yet you assumed I did, Nalah got it wrong on this. So, you thought I am angry with him still so what I will do is let my family go at him about his family, huh? Is that it?” getting up from the bed “not exactly, I was just quiet. What else you want me to do?” I am not even sure if she thinks she has done wrong “I wanted you to stick up for your fiancé! Like I do you, every time with my family, I am there. I am telling them not to even speak a word about you, but you!? Nothing, are you serious Robyn?” Robyn just shrugged “I am tired” I am not sure if to not say a word or snap on her.
Robyn is really annoying, just her whole demeanour, she just doesn’t care “do you want this? I rather you say it now because making me do all of this like a dickhead is a no, what is it? Because I need trust, you did nothing! You fucking let them talk shit about a family you’re going to be in, I did this for you and you are not happy still” she is not happy still, look at her “say it, seriously just fucking say it. Don’t be walking off like that, talk to me!” Robyn turned to look at me “I am going to bed” she is not even listening to what I said “fuck you Robyn!” dragging open the door, I am not going to stand there while she ignores the shit I say. Banging the door shut, I can’t marry that when she doesn’t care at all. Walking across the hall to Reign’ room, opening the door slowly. I really do like Reign’ room, they really did it up all cute and shit. Walking over to the crib, I wonder if the bang woke her, but she won’t wake up, she will be knocked out asleep. Looking down in the crib “as I knew” I said smiling down at her asleep, she pouts like me when she sleeps. Leaning against the side of the crib, Robyn is just closed off. She is not there with me, she is not even saying a word and ignoring everything. I want to marry Robyn, that is what I want but I just don’t know what she wants, was it Vegas that triggered her I don’t know “I will figure it out” I said to myself.
Walking down the steps “don’t you old people sleep” I mean obviously they heard me shouting “not when you’re shouting at my niece” Gloria said “it’s nothing to do with any of you” now everyone wonders why I smoke, making my way to the back door “can I come?” Leon said “sure” I like Leon, he is a good guy “I need one too, I know I am scrounging” opening the cigarette packet and pulling one out “it’s fine” opening the back door “here” passing him the packet, I swear I could try and stop but I have too much shit on my mind to be not smoking at all. I need it, I am not a social smoker where I can just stop like that “that was eventful wasn’t it” lighting my cigarette as I sat down on the chair outside “thank you” holding the lighter out to him, moving back the cigarette while blowing the smoke out “this is why I smoke, best thing. I am the bad guy now because I came in shouting, what did you hear?” I asked Leon “you said fuck you Robyn and some muffled shouting” of course they heard that “she didn’t say anything to me, she said she is tired. Couldn’t defend her actions, I am thinking of calling it off. Maybe Robyn ain’t up for what I am or who I am, she wants me but not the life when I would give her everything, I would do anything for her and she couldn’t even just take up for me in that moment” placing the cigarette between my lips “I know my friend loves you so much, she does and yes the life is a lot but I think it’s more to do with Thomas not being her dad, I think she is hurting on that still. So much is happening and it’s a lot, we are ok because like that is not our life. Robyn is going through this, she is moving to New York, she is getting married and she wanted her dad to walk her, she then found out Thomas is not her dad and her real dad is dead, so all those years was a lie, then she found out you wanted to go Vegas when she worked so hard to get you better and you did not think if she wanted to be with you on that day because she is struggling. Then she even runs away from her family because they don’t be nice, then she is hearing all of that when in the first place she didn’t want you to meet them, then you both argued. Now it’s not my place but it still doesn’t sit well with me with the female business, Maurice you were really and in that store, you was flirting up a storm with her, I was there and you didn’t care. It’s wrong, even that server was on you. Robyn got annoyed; I just think it’s a lot. She does want to be with you, but she is struggling. It’s becoming a nightmare, then she is moving to New York all at the same time. How much do you want? And then you can’t even be decent behind her back, that is my friend and she is hurting” Leon said, he didn’t hold back “it was a low blow to use the prenup against her when Robyn wouldn’t even care for your money like that, you care for it more than her. She did do wrong, she didn’t speak up but when you just give up you don’t say shit, I get it. It’s just always something there to crush your dreams, one thing after another and then you’re still married, I wouldn’t marry your ass to be honest, she is because she knows it’s what you want and she loves you so much but you done shouted at my friend Maurice, now I want you to make her feel better” blowing the smoke out from my lips slowly, Leon just gave it to me as it is “and please don’t get me fired from my job” he added, I laughed shaking my head “it’s ok, it’s what I needed” I mumbled.
Walking back into the house, the room became awfully silent which was not a nice feeling, but I get why. Leon has made me see what I should have been seeing from the beginning, I have been a dick but the family ain’t been shit with me but for Robyn I will try “so, can we talk?” I said, Terry got up from the couch “yeah, come and sit down” smiling lightly at Terry “thank you” sitting down on the couch “I will be quick, I need to take my medication and go to bed. So today has been a bad day, things were said which was upsetting. I am just upset that Robyn didn’t take up for me, I don’t like your attitude towards me, I have done nothing to you, but I want to hear from you what is your issue?” I said to Colin “did my family do something to you? What can I do for you to not be like this?” Leon sat down next to me “you cannot do anything; I have just been wanting to meet with you for a while. I wanted to say these things to you, my grandchild knows the truth and it does hurt me to know. I just think she can do better; she is an angel. I have watched her grow and then grow apart away from me which hurts me. She thinks I am harsh, but I do it to protect her, many years before you were born. The Davenport family have been snatching up businesses from people, black people. I didn’t like that, you sell your soul to be that rich, your great grandad, when I was small, I heard the stories. Even he had slaves, black too. Your family were bitches to the whites, and if I meet your dad, I will beat his ass and I will not change my mind. There is nothing you can do to make me like you, you’re evil” nodding my head “there is that, then Colin. You cannot come to the wedding, the rest of you. Be my guest, I tried” getting up from the couch “I cannot account for the past but I can for the future” I don’t know what he wants “you marry her then I will make sure I leak it, I leak that you marry her. You listen to me boy!” I stopped walking, looking over at Colin “you think you leaking anything would stop me from marrying her? You probably got Alzheimer’s thinking these stories” he is crazy “my father does not, he tells the truth” Gloria said “you boy, you are a slave child, so was your dad. You need to know your history, I will not forgive Robyn for allowing such a connection to the devil, I hate. And as for you Terry, why did you let this happen, and you let Thomas go?” I really don’t care “because he is a good guy and nothing will change my mind, it’s late. I think it’s time you go, me and Thomas are over dad, now please leave my home and Maurice just go upstairs, leave him be” this old man is crazy, maybe my dad did fuck his bitch, I don’t know.
Colin hates me because of the history my family got, I don’t know what he wants me to do with that. Old people are crazy for nothing, he is just a stubborn old man that assumes I care if he tells, then so be it. Closing the bed door behind me, Robyn is sleeping on her side away from me. Tilting my head to the side or maybe she is not asleep, she is fake sleeping. I know Robyn, I know when she is asleep and when she isn’t. The rhythm of her breathing, she is fake sleeping. Pulling my top from over my head, throwing it on the floor. Unbuckling my jeans, I know Robyn a lot. She doesn’t even fall asleep on her side balled up like that. Also, she falls asleep on her right-hand side, with her arm propped under the pillow, her arms are always all over the place, and her legs too. If I am in bed with her, she will intertwine her leg with mine and I would have to hold her hand, see I know these things and take notice, so Robyn is not asleep. Fixing my boxers as I made my way to the bed, pulling the covers back. Crawling onto the bed, I am going to shuffle to her side. Peaking over Robyn, her eyes are closed. Laying on my side right next to Robyn, pulling the cover over me “Robyn?” I said, wrapping my arm around her and then I heard the sob that left her lips “don’t cry” I know Robyn, I knew she wasn’t sleeping.
Robyn got out of bed, breaking away from me “I don’t want to sleep with you, you can sleep here. I need to be alone” frowning at her “why, I am sorry. I was just annoyed earlier, you didn’t ride for me like you should have” Robyn shook her head “I heard you and Leon speaking outside, I heard what he said about you. After I have spoken to you about what I hate, you still doing it? Am I just a joke to you? Why do you want to marry me so badly? You don’t need a wife, you need a cumrag, just like Ally is. I am not it Maurice, I don’t need you, you need me. You want me, like you really have the audacity to go out in my city and be flirting with these girls like you are single, it’s laughable, my life is a fucking joke and you just make everything worse. You know what, Leon is wrong. I don’t need you to make me feel better when you are the person upsetting me, like you are doing this behind my back. You are sick, and I do not want you to even sleep in the bed with me. Everything I feel about you businessmen is becoming true and you expect me to move to you in New York? So, you can kick me to the curb when you don’t need me, or I end up like your mom. I fucking told you! I told you this already Maurice and we are still on this same shit! And you want to go Vegas? I can’t trust, it’s not happening, and I am not sure if that includes this marriage when you are just some whore, I deserve better” I groaned out “I didn’t do it on purpose, you know I don’t think of you as no cumrag Robyn. She flirted with me!?” Robyn doesn’t wish to even listen she is just picking up her things “I will see how I feel in the morning, I will then let you know if I want to marry you” I really just wanted to make it up with Robyn but now it’s another thing “you may want to protect your money and name with some prenup but I need to protect my sanity, you have really hurt me just like I probably hurt you with not saying anything to my family, but to shame me and say that in front of them” this is some bullshit “If you listen to my reasoning, I was angry that is why but you need to remember what I said to you on valentines day, I mean it Robyn. I do love you; I would never cheat on you like that, you’re too good for me, I know. I want to grow old with you” Robyn closed the bedroom door on me, I guess I need to give her space.
Senate Republicans Say They Will Not Vote On Health Bill
20 Republicans Vote Against GOP Healthcare Bill | MTP Daily | MSNBC
By Thomas Kaplan and Robert Pear
WASHINGTON Senate Republicans on Tuesday officially abandoned the latest plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act, shelving a showdown vote on the measure and effectively admitting defeat in their last-gasp drive to fulfill a core promise of President Trump and Republican lawmakers.
The decision came less than 24 hours after a pivotal Republican senator, Susan Collins of Maine, declared her opposition to the repeal proposal, all but ensuring that Republican leaders would be short of the votes they needed.
We havent given up on changing the American health care system, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, said after a lunchtime meeting of Republican senators. We are not going to be able to do that this week, but it still lies ahead of us, and we havent given up on that.
Mr. McConnell said Republicans would move on to their next big legislative goal: overhauling the tax code, a feat that has not been accomplished since 1986.
Democrats, who have spent all year fighting to protect the Affordable Care Act, a law that is a pillar of President Barack Obamas legacy, responded by calling for the resumption of bipartisan negotiations to stabilize health insurance markets. Republican leaders had squelched those talks as the latest repeal plan, written by Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, gained steam.
And health care is sure to be an issue in next years midterm elections.
Senate Gop Blocks 9/11 First Responders Health Plan Bill
Senate Republicans on Thursday morning filibustered legislation to monitor and treat first responders and emergency workers who suffered illnesses related to 9/11.
A vote to quash the filibuster failed by a vote of 57 to 42, three votes short of the necessary threshold. As a result, the proposal is unlikely to pass this year.
The bill would provide funding for a health program to treat first responders, construction and cleanup workers and residents who inhaled toxic particles after the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.
The $7.4 billion cost of the legislation over 10 years is paid for by a provision that would prevent foreign multinational corporations from using tax havens to avoid taxes on U.S. income.
Republicans denied adequate health care to the heroes who developed illnesses from rushing into burning buildings on 9/11. Yet they will stop at nothing to give tax breaks to millionaires and CEOs, even though they will explode our deficit and fail to create jobs. That tells you everything you need to know about their priorities, Reid said in a statement.
Schumer said some of the police officers and firefighters who rushed to the flaming towers have already been diagnosed with cancers.
Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., speaks to reporters following a town hall meeting earlier this month. Moran and Utah Sen. Mike Lee joined the “no” vote on the Republican-sponsored Obamacare replacement bill.
After seven years of promising to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Republican efforts at passing a health care bill on their own may have ended Monday night as the bill working its way through the Senate was effectively blocked. Two more GOP senators Mike Lee of Utah and Jerry Moran of Kansas came out in opposition to the bill, which means it cannot get enough support to pass.
My colleague and I will not support the MTP to this version of BCRA. #HealthcareBill
Shortly afterward, President Trump wrote, “Republicans should just REPEAL failing ObamaCare now & work on a new Healthcare Plan that will start from a clean slate. Dems will join in!”
McConnell has previously said turning to Democrats to come up with fixes for the current health care system is his next step, and several senators who criticized the crafting of the current bill in private have called for such a bipartisan process.
The Trump administrations efforts to sabotage the ACA and their consequences receive detailed attention in a recently released Brookings book, Trump, the Administrative Presidency, and Federalism. For present purposes, I highlight six major sabotage initiatives which emerged in the wake of congressional failure to repeal and replace the ACA.
1. Reduce outreach and opportunities for enrollment in the ACAs insurance exchanges. Established to offer health insurance to individuals and small business, the exchanges have provided coverage to some 10 million people annually. The Obama administration had vigorously promoted the ACA in part to attract healthy, younger people to the exchanges to help keep premiums down. The Trump administration sharply reduced support for advertising and exchange navigators while reducing the annual enrollment period to about half the number of days.
2. Cut ACA subsidies to insurance companies offering coverage on the exchanges. ACA proponents saw insurance company participation on the exchanges as central to fostering enrollee choice and to fueling competition that would lower premiums. The law therefore provided various subsidies to insurance companies to reduce their risks of losing money if they participated on the exchanges. The Trump administration joined congressional Republicans in reneging on these financial commitments.
Day One Legal Challenges
On March 23, 2010, the same day the ACA was signed into law, attorneys general from 14 states began the process of challenging the ACAs individual mandate via the court system. A total of 26 states eventually joined in the lawsuit, which went all the way to the Supreme Court.
In June 2012, the Supreme Court upheld the legality of the individual mandate, but ruled that the federal government could not withhold Medicaid funding from states that didnt expand Medicaid. This had the effect of making the ACAs Medicaid expansion optional, which has, in turn, hobbled the ACAs progress in many states.
Universal Coverage Vs Market
Democrats generally continue to support the Affordable Care Act , but would like to fix its flaws and generally improve the law. Democrats want to empower states to use innovation waivers to create their own approaches to healthcare reform that are as good asor better thanthe current system. Many Democrats also support fixing the ACA’s “family glitch” by basing affordability calculations for employer-sponsored coverage on family premiums rather than employee-only premiums, and most also support expanding premium subsidies to higher income ranges in order to soften the subsidy cliff.
But increasingly, Democrats are also getting behind the idea of a transition to some sort of universal coverage system. All of the Democrats who ran for the 2020 presidential nomination were in favor of universal coverage, although they had differing opinions on whether we should transition entirely to a single-payer system or use a combination of government-run and private health coverage .
Biden’s healthcare proposal also calls for an end to surprise balance billing, premium-free coverage under the public option for people who are caught in the Medicaid coverage gap , and allowing Medicare to negotiate prices with drug companies.
The Republican Party has not rolled out a new healthcare platform for 2020, and is instead utilizing the same platform they had in 2016. So in general, their approach can be expected to be the same as it has been for the past several years.
Insurers Come Out Swinging Against New Republican Health Care Bill
By Robert Pear
WASHINGTON The health insurance industry, after cautiously watching Republican health care efforts for months, came out forcefully on Wednesday against the Senates latest bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act, suggesting that its state-by-state block grants could create health care chaos in the short term and a Balkanized, uncertain insurance market.
In the face of the industry opposition, Senate Republican leaders nevertheless said they would push for a showdown vote next week on the legislation, drafted by Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana.
That puts Republican senators in a squeeze, especially those whose states would lose money under a complicated formula in the bill. Generally, it would shift federal funds away from states that have been successful in expanding coverage to states where Republican leaders refused to expand Medicaid or encourage enrollment.
Republican senators from Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Ohio and West Virginia will all have to decide whether to heed the pleas of consumers who like the current health law or yield to the will of Republican leaders, donors and voters who demand an end to the Affordable Care Act.
Senate Republicans are already under pressure from 11 governors including five fellow Republicans and a pivotal Alaskan independent who this week urged the Senate to reject the last-ditch repeal effort.
Groups Opposing The American Health Care Act
Why Republicans are turning against the GOP health care bill
Over 50 organizations oppose the proposed healthcare plan that will make Americans will pay more for less.;The list includes nurses, doctors, hospitals, teachers, churches, and more. You can see a few here:;
AARP: AARP opposes this legislation, as introduced, that would weaken Medicare, leaving the door open to a voucher program that shifts costs and risks to seniors.
Before people even reach retirement age, big insurance companies could be allowed to charge them an age tax that adds up to thousands of dollars more per year. Older Americans need affordable health care services and prescriptions. This plan goes in the opposite direction, increasing insurance premiums for older Americans and not doing anything to lower drug costs.
On top of the hefty premium increase for consumers, big drug companies and other special interests get a sweetheart deal.
Finally, Medicaid cuts could impact people of all ages and put at risk the health and safety of 17.4 million children and adults with disabilities and seniors by eliminating much-needed services that allow individuals to live independently in their homes and communities. Although no one believes the current health care system is perfect, this harmful legislation would make health care less secure and less affordable.
AARP stands ready to work with both parties on legislation that puts Americans first, not the special interests.
That just wont do.
That is, above all, why physicians must be involved in this debate.
Don’t Miss: What Is The Lapel Pin The Republicans Are Wearing
The Road To Health Care Overhaul
The House of Representatives passed the bill by a 219-212 vote late Sunday after a raucous day of debate and negotiation. Thirty-four Democrats voted “no” on the health care bill.
This morning, an emotional Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., said on “Good Morning America” the health care bill’s passage fulfills the dream of his father, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy.
“He always believed our country was about expanding opportunity for more and more Americans, and I believe this, as he said, was the unfinished business of Americans,” said Kennedy, who choked up when talking about his father. “This is a program for the middle class. Too often in America, they’re the ones who are left out. … Not now.”
The road to passing health care was a turbulent one for Democrats. After anti-abortion Democrats, led by Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., struck a deal with the Democratic leadership and the White House, they were bombarded with charges of supporting abortion.
As Stupak was speaking on the House floor Sunday, an unidentified Republican lawmaker shouted, “Baby Killer!”
Today, Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Texas, admitted that he was the one.
“While I remain heartbroken over the passage of this bill and the tragic consequences it will have for the unborn, I deeply regret that my actions were mistakenly interpreted as a direct reference to Congressman Stupak himself,” Neugebauer said in a statement today.
What Does the Health Care Bill Mean For You?
Satisfying Activists And Donors
One main school of political scientists defines a political party as consisting of three parts: the partys voters, its elected officials, and the party-as-organization, meaning the groups that support and influence the party, including powerful labor unions on the Democratic side and groups like the National Rifle Association for the GOP.
Polls suggest a majority of Republican voters support the health care repeal effort, but it is nowhere near universal. A recent Kaiser poll, for example, found that 67 percent of Republicans had a favorable view of the House version of the Obamacare repeal legislation, while 18 percent viewed the bill unfavorably and another 15 percent didnt give an opinion.
And crucially, a recent Survey Monkey poll conducted for FiveThirtyEight showed that while 89 percent of core Trump supporters like how the president is handling health care, only 58 percent of reluctant Trump supporters1 feel the same way. These reluctant voters put Trump over the top in the Electoral College in 2016 and will play a major role in determining the GOPs fortunes in 2018, and 40 percent of them disapprove of how Trump has handled health care.
It may actually make political sense to push a health care bill that is broadly unpopular with the public but keeps party volunteers knocking on doors and donors giving money.
Mcconnell Reacts To ‘skinny Bill’s’ Failure
We told our constituents we would vote that way and when the moment came, the moment came, most of us did,” he said.
“This is clearly a disappointment,” McConnell added. “It’s time to move on.”
The return of McCain to Washington after a brain cancer diagnosis added drama to the already tense proceedings. It was his vote the 50th that allowed Republicans begin debating the measure.
McCain gave a heartfelt speech upon his return to the Senate on Tuesday, decrying the rise of partisanship. And it was McCain who put an end to the partisan repeal effort.
McCain spoke to Trump last night on the phone and the president urged him to vote to for the skinny repeal bill assuring him it wouldnt end up passing into law, according to one source with direct knowledge of the call.
Vice President Mike Pence, who arrived in the chamber in a bid to rescue the bill and in preparation to cast the deciding vote, stood alongside McCain’s desk and then joined the senator in the cloakroom. By the time they re-emerged, separately, the vote had begun.
McCain went back to his desk and sat after casting his “no” vote. He eventually made his way to the Democrats’ side of the chamber and was greeted with hugs and cheers.
“I believe each of us stood up for the reasons that we felt were right”
Several Republicans said they did not know where McCain would fall, and there were audible gasps in the chamber when he turned down his thumb to indicate his decision.
Actions To Hinder Implementation
Under both ACA and the AHCA, CBO reported that the health exchange marketplaces would remain stable. However, Republican politicians took a variety of steps to undermine it, creating uncertainty that adversely impacted enrollment and insurer participation while increasing premiums. Concern of the exchanges became another argument for reforms. Past and ongoing Republican attempts to weaken the law have included:
House Democrats Approve Health Bill Seeking Contrast With Trumps Obamacare Assault
The vote was aimed at shoring up Democratic support in swing districts that fueled the partys House takeover in 2018.
06/29/2020 06:50 PM EDT
Link Copied
House Democrats on Monday approved a major expansion of Obamacare, underscoring the health care laws central role in their campaign pitch and drawing sharp contrast with President Donald Trumps efforts to eliminate the entire law.
Two Republicans New Jerseys Jeff Van Drew, formerly a Democrat, and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania joined virtually every Democrat in supporting the bill, which would expand the laws subsidies for private health insurance, encourage hold-out red states to expand Medicaid and reverse Trump administration policies seen as undermining the Affordable Care Act. The Democrats bill, which will likely be shunned by the Republican-controlled Senate, also contains pieces of the partys, including a requirement for the government to negotiate prices.
Progressive lawmakers who have pushed sweeping Medicare for All legislation largely backed the more moderate health bill, which is aimed at shoring up Democrats support in swing districts that were pivotal to the party retaking control of the House in the 2018 midterms. The vote comes shortly after Trumps Justice Department urged the Supreme Court to overturn Obamacare in a case later this fall, despite warnings from some Republicans that voters would punish the party in November.
Just one Democrat voted against the bill.
Originally, the Eighth Doctor was all over this, but the fic evolved so that he doesn’t actually make himself physically known. He’s just talked about a lot. He’ll be present in a future installment, though, so for those of you who were looking forward to seeing him, don’t be disappointed. And for my Classic Who fans, look! It’s Seven!
The TARDIS was in between stages. She had changed a lot, under Seven’s watch, and at this point in her timeline, she was still a mix between the more sterile aura that Six had left behind and the dim-lit, paper-and-tea-scented, homey place she would be by time Seven would start losing his hair (which was a terrible shame, considering the Doctor’s tradition of keeping a fabulous head of hair through all his regenerations, but then again, who was Nine to judge?).
At the moment, though, Seven was still in his younger years and still the keeper of a full head of hair. And he was calmly preparing mint tea like it was nobody’s business, which was mostly true, seeing as the only other person in the TARDIS with him was… himself.
“So, what is the matter?” Seven asked. Nine immediately wanted to call Seven out on his placating tone, because I was you and I remember and I practically invented that tone of voice so don’t you dare use that on me, but he found himself… placated. And, well, as much as he remembered being Seven, he had forgotten how good Seven was at this. This, being… well, whatever it was. “It must be something important if you crossed timelines to talk to yourself about it.”
“We met a girl,” said Nine.
“Oh, dear, that’s awfully specific,” Seven snarked casually, shifting the kettle. “Please, be more vague so that we can include basically every day of our lives and ninety percent of our companions.”
“Shut it. I’m the one who’s supposed to be a snark, not you,” Nine said. He would have been amused if he wasn’t in such a foul temper.
“Hmph. I can be whatever I want to be.” Seven shifted the kettle again, more out of habit than necessity, since moving the tea kettle did absolutely nothing. “So, tell me. What’s so important about this girl?”
“We love her.” Sometimes blunt really was the way to go, especially with one’s own self.
“We do?” Seven looked as startled as he had ever been, which was saying something, considering how many times he had gotten a gun pointed in his face. Really should be a bit more wary of guns, Nine thought, remembering Seven’s unfortunate and honestly stupid end, but it wasn’t as if he could warn his younger self, so he stayed silent on that matter. Seven stared Nine down, looking for some hint as to his future self’s meaning, and he must have found it genuine, because he suddenly went slack in his seat and said, “Oh. Oh my. We do.”
“Yeah.”
Seven’s eyes darted aimlessly before settling on Nine’ shoe. “So. Love. I never thought...”
“Neither did I,” Nine agreed, bobbing his head in a nod. “But she’s fantastic.”
A small smile lit Seven’s face. “So, did you come just to tell me the big news, or did you need something? Not that news like that isn’t enough. I won’t be able to remember it, but I’ll still have that sensation of looking forward to something. Thank you.”
“S’pose I should tell the others,” Nine pondered, before shaking himself. “But I’m here because… well, I did something stupid.”
“Oh, of course,” Seven groaned. “I may not be particularly knowledgeable of your regeneration, seeing as you do come sometime after me, but I think I can guess that it was something you said. Our talent with words doesn’t seem to last past myself.”
“It does, though,” corrected the Ninth with a sneer. “It lasts through Eight, that’s for certain.”
For a moment or two, Seven was pleased, before he noticed Nine’s sneer of disdain. “Oh, dear. What does this have to do with Eight?”
“Well, y’see, it started…” Nine leaned forward, and so did Seven, both looking as though they were about to divulge the secrets of the universe. Which they could. “Ah, well… It's odd, y'know, I've never had t'explain this before. Thing is, she’s human.”
“Human?” echoed Seven, his eyebrows shooting up to his hairline. “Well, I suppose that’s… very much like us, to give our affections to a human. I never really considered it, I don’t think.”
“You will.”
“Hm. So, what’s it like? Loving a… a human.”
“Fantastic.” Nine smiled. “Not like those Gallifreyan ladies. She’s not full of it, actin’ better’n I am ’cause-a station. She’s jus’… her. Wants to see the whole universe. I get to show her everythin’. And she tries so hard, jus’t’be alive. Harder’n any Gallifreyan in history ever bothered to.”
A warm, toasty feeling started to crackle to life between Seven’s hearts. “That sounds… wonderful.”
“Is. Problem, though,” admitted Nine.
Seven turned to gather two teacups from the cabinet. Nine looked at the delicate, floral-painted, gilded cups with some level of amusement. They didn’t really suit him or Seven, or any of him, but they had been around for so long, he couldn’t imagine getting rid of them. He hadn’t dared to take them out around you, but now that he thought about it, maybe you would find them as funny as he did.
“Of course there is,” said Seven, snatching the kettle off the burner (and, really, was that a Bunsen burner? Why did he even own one of those, much less make tea on it?). “Go on.”
“Well, being human, she doesn’t really know about the courtin’ procedures,” Nine admitted. Seven saw where the conversation was going and immediately groaned and allowed his head to bump against the cabinet door with a dull thud. “My thoughts exactly. And the worst part is’at I’m not all that good at courtin’ in the first place. I tried a few little things, messed the last one up horribly.”
“Double down,” Seven mused. “So you want me to help–” and then Seven paused, because the whole conversation clicked in his mind like the final piece of a jigsaw puzzle. “Eight is good with words, you said. You went to him for help.”
“Yeah,” said Nine. “Eight is… well, you’ll understand when you’re him, but it seemed like the perfect plan. He’s good with that sort of… thing. Women, I guess. He practically memorized the courting procedures, and he’s very… charming, y’could say, so I thought it would work.”
“What would work? You didn’t… oh. You did.”
“I took ’er t’see’im,” Nine admitted, scrubbing a palm down his face and covering his eyes. Seven scooted a cup of freshly-brewed tea under the other Doctor’s rather prominent nose. The steam rose up and wetted Nine’s skin. “It seemed like a good idea. He was so lonely, y’know. That body wanted love more’n any o’ the others did, so I thought he would be the most willing to help. Was a bit too willing.”
“Ah.” Seven sipped his tea and instantly regretted it. The liquid was scalding. “So.”
“He was all over her!” Nine exclaimed, suddenly throwing both hands into the air. If he hadn’t been feeling so tired, he might have jumped out of his chair to pace, as well. “I swear, second I told him who she was to us, he practically ran over and snogged her right then and there.”
“Well, you did say he wanted love more than the rest of us, and that’s saying something, considering how much we’ve wanted a… a bond-mate, over the centuries.”
Nine scoffed. “Either way, he was ridiculous. Eight’s very tactile, no sense of personal space, so I was expectin’ him to get a bit touchy with her, but he had her sitting on his lap. On his lap, hear me? I’ve known her for years, few weeks ago I finally get her to lie down on the couch with me, and in less than five minutes he’s got her on his lap, holding his hand. Oh, n’his hands were everywhere. On her face, in her hair, on her thigh, blast it. And she didn’t stop ’im, either.”
“Why would you want her to?” Seven asked, confused. “He’s us, he was forward enough to initiate courting touches, and she accepted. That’s perfect. What’s the problem?”
“She’s human, Doctor,” said Nine, frowning. “From a Gallifreyan woman, that might have been perfect, but she’s human. To her, it wasn’t me. It was a man who was more handsome and better spoken than me, touching her, and she was fine with it.”
“So you didn’t tell her that you and Eight are the same person? That we’re all the Doctor, despite our differences?” asked Seven, who was beginning to wonder if his counterpart had lost some brain cells through regeneration.
“Of course I did, but–”
“But nothing!” Seven cut his future self off abruptly. “You explained to her that Eight is you, she met Eight, and she accepted his courting offers. Maybe she doesn’t know the first thing about courting procedures, but it sounds to me as if he was making himself rather obvious. If she accepted it from him, then she accepted it from you, just as much as from me and all of us who come before and after.”
Nine was silent.
“I don’t know how your regeneration thinks,” Seven continued, voice much softer, “but I don’t think we would fall in love with a girl who wouldn’t love all of us. If she is who I hope she is, then she knows that we’re all… us. If she accepted Eight, she accepted us all, and that includes you, in case you didn’t notice. Now, stop being a jealous sod and go to her.”
Slowly, Nine eased his way out of his chair. His eyes wandered over the TARDIS’s mixed interior, obviously recalling when it had been his, what had come before and what would come after. Then he looked down at Seven, and Seven saw a light in his eyes that hadn’t been there before.
“I’d better get back to her, then,” Nine said, a smile playing at his lips but not coming all the way through. “Y’know… seems t’me like ya understand it all better than I do, and you haven’t even met her yet.”
“Maybe so,” Seven admitted, shrugging. He dipped his head down to take a sip of tea, but, remembering the perfectly unacceptable temperature, he refrained. “Still, would you give her my love?”
The smile turned into a full grin.
“Aye. I’ll do that.”
And just like that, Nine swiftly escaped from Seven’s TARDIS and into the rough terrain of whatever planet they had agreed to meet each other on. Seven knew that Nine’s TARDIS couldn’t be far away, which meant that you were probably close by. He stamped down the temptation to follow Nine, to catch a glimpse of you, or maybe just to hear your voice. He wanted to know. As confident as he had acted for his counterpart’s sake, he didn’t know anything about you, and he wished… he just wanted to know something about you.
Anything. Anything at all.
Someday, he thought, sipping the tea that had finally cooled, someday. He would have to forget all of this. If he didn’t, it would cause a paradox. But there was nothing saying that he had to forget immediately. He could keep the memory for a day, or two.
Maybe... maybe, if he kept this memory overnight, he would dream of you.
