Fireworks explode over the lake, drowning out the sound of cheers from the citizens of Hatchetfield.
Duke loves the Honey Festival, always has. Though, for some reason, he finds himself unable to watch the fireworks. He can't watch the display without an aching emptiness in his heart.
Now, instead of watching the colorful explosions, he finds himself walking by the old diner. Boards cover the windows, graffiti sprayed across the wood.
He misses it, though he can't quite place his finger on why. He tells himself it's because of the food and tries to ignore the nagging little voice in the back of his head that tells him that's wrong.
Something red in his peripheral catches his attention. He turns to see a red haired woman in a denim jacket. “Oh, hello,” he says politely.
“Hiya,” She greets with a grin. Her eyes drift over to the abandoned building. “Was it a good restaurant?” She asks curiously.
“It was the best,” Duke replies with a smile of his own, “Can't find another slice of pie in town that even compares to Miss Retro’s. Too bad it closed down when she died.”
The stranger hums as her bright blue eyes lock on Duke again. “That's a shame,” she sympathizes, “But we can't dwell on the past.”
This makes Duke laugh as he looks her over. “Says the woman who’s dressed like the eighties spat her out,” he teases. He extends a hand to her. “I'm Duke, by the way.
“Miss Holliday,” She introduces herself as she takes his hand. “I hope I'll see you again real soon, Duke.” She gives a wink before drawing her hand back and walking away.
Another loud boom sounds off as another firework explodes in the sky. Duke's eyes turn up to watch the bright, colorful lights shimmer in the night sky before looking at the retreating back of Miss Holliday.
He wonders why the ache in his chest feels stronger than ever now.

I'm excited to finish writing Chapters 24 & 25 because Buck and Eddie are married and the Diaz family is starting the second half of their two-week long European family adventure. For anyone who hasn't read Chapters 22 and 23, here's a brief overview. In Chapter 22, Buck and Eddie got married, Chris was their best man and Eddie successfully surprised Buck with all the things he had planned for him including a three-tier wedding cake. Their honeymoon started that night and they had an important conversation before they consummated their marriage. In Chapter 23, they left Rome the day after their wedding and proceeded to visit 5 other cities for the remainder of their time in Italy. By the end of it, they agreed to continue speaking Italian even after they return to the U.S. because while they were in San Gimignano, they made a decision that could affect the course of their family's lives forever. What was the decision? 👀
They departed Rome at the end of the chapter and they landed in London on Christmas Eve to start the second half of their family adventure. What else are they going to do while they're still in Europe? Will Buck meet his biological father? 🤷🏽♀️

Here's another snippet from Chapter 24 of Buck and Eddie having an important conversation while they're in the shower together.

While Buck runs his long soapy fingers up and down his husband’s back, he thinks to himself that it’s time for them to discuss something while they stand partially underneath the shower head. He exhales, meets Eddie’s eyes then says, “I think it’s time for me to tell Chris about Edward”.
Eddie raises his eyebrows because they talked about this while they were in Rome and they decided they would wait until they knew for sure what was going to happen. “Are you sure or would you rather wait until Thursday night or Friday morning?”
He shakes his head no. “I don’t want to wait anymore because uh… it’s time for us to tell him everything… about Edward, Margaret and Phillip because uh… I don’t want him thinking I was hiding this from him.”
Eddie nods and doesn’t break eye contact and he doesn’t interrupt him. He simply continues gently tracing his fingertips up and down Buck’s soapy forearms.
“I—I spent more than 29 years not knowing about Daniel and um… more than 31 years not knowing about Edward. I won’t do that to Chris. Babe… I want us to meet my biological father but if he doesn’t show then… I want Chris to know about him anyway so I think it’s time to tell him.” He pauses then he exhales a deep breath. “Chris never asks us for anything and he’s lost so much already and… I don’t want him to think that he couldn’t trust me to tell him the truth.”
“You know I’m with you every step of the way. When do you want to talk to him?”
Buck nods then replies, “Well… we have a lot planned for today so I think it will be best to talk to him tonight after we come back from dinner. What uh… do you think?”
“I think it’s perfect and you know we’re in this together.”
“I know and thank…”
He’s interrupted when Eddie places his forefinger over his lips and says, “Shhh… you don’t have anything to thank me for. We’re married and Chris is our son so we can talk to him about this whenever you’re ready.”
Buck exhales a breath he doesn’t realize he’s holding. He never doubted if Eddie would support him but if anyone asks him, he’d admit he’s still nervous about telling Chris about Edward because if he doesn’t want to meet with them Friday, not only will he feel abandoned again but he will have inadvertently inflicted that pain onto his husband and son too and he doesn’t want to do that. He lowers his eyes but just like always his husband steps right in to pull him out of that mindset.
Eddie can see he’s blaming himself for something that hasn’t happened so he wraps both of his arms around him again, pulls him closer so their chests are pressed together and even though they’re both soapy and slippery from washing each other’s bodies, it doesn’t matter. He says, “Amore mio, guardami.” [“My love, look at me.”]
Buck lifts his eyes and meets his husband’s and all he sees is love. He sees it every time he looks at Eddie and he knows this is his safe space.
“Remember we talked about this before. If Edward doesn’t show up then…”

Fic Summary: Months after Buck and Eddie were hit by the same lightning strike; they’re still struggling with the aftermath of it. But before they make their love confessions, they’ll spend time getting to know themselves as individuals first. Eddie learns to enjoy the simple things in life as he participates in activities on his own and with new friends while Buck learns the rest of the 31-year-old deep dark family secret about his conception and birth. Their journey to forever is still a work in progress but once they finally admit they’re in love with each other, everything that follows their love confessions will be cataclysmic.

Chapter Summaries
Chapter 1 - Eddie makes a new friend while Buck receives devastating news regarding the sperm donation he made for Connor and Kameron.
Chapter 2 - Buck does a lot of research to learn more about the abnormalities found in his red blood cells and Eddie starts a new therapy journey that’s all about him and not the traumas he’s experienced.
Chapter 3 - After more than a month, Buck and Eddie finally spend time together outside of work but it doesn’t end well and they part with a lot of uncertainty regarding their places in each other’s lives.
Chapter 4 - Eddie has a few realizations about his life which causes him to consider moving back to El Paso, TX while Buck continues to be reminded of his past which causes him to take an impromptu road trip across America.
Chapter 5 - Both Buck and Eddie have difficult conversations with their parents and Buck finally learns the truth behind the reason why his mother despised him while Eddie finally tells his mother about the way she tries to control him.
Chapter 6 - More than two weeks after Buck pushed Eddie away after suggesting they needed a break; Eddie decides to try again. Eddie’s there for Buck when he’s at his worst just like Buck was there for him when he was at his worst and he won’t let Buck give up.
Chapter 7 - After Buck’s mental breakdown, Eddie has his back the same way Buck had his when he had his own breakdown more than a year ago. They share several vulnerable and emotionally intimate moments with one another and they begin to realize their small, sweet and caring gestures matter just as much if not more than any grand gesture ever could because these are the foundations of a long-lasting love relationship.
Chapter 8 - Buck, Eddie and Chris all have their own therapists and during their sessions, they reflect on their pasts while they’re in the present so they can prepare for their future together as a family.
Chapter 9 - Buck and Eddie are there for each other when Buck has to testify as a witness during the trial. But by the end of it, they’ll both realize their individual and shared traumas are going to keep resurfacing until they talk about them, deal with the fact that they’re in love with one another and face the fact that they can’t live without each other.
Chapter 10 - As Buck and Eddie finally begin to confront their past traumas, they realize how much they need each other to fill in the gaps of their memories. Additionally, the universe screams at them for what appears to be the one hundredth time so Buck can realize he doesn’t have to ‘find it’ because he already ‘made it’ and Eddie’s reminded tomorrow isn’t promised and he doesn’t have to die alone if he doesn’t want to.
Chapter 11 - A “virga” or dry thunderstorm is in the forecast but once the rain starts, the thunderstorm happening outside won’t be able to match the storm brewing inside between Buck and Eddie. It’s the universe’s final scream and when the tumultuous winds begin to blow, they’ll have one last chance to hold onto everything they’ve built over the last six years or they’ll lose it all forever.
Chapter 12 - Buck and Eddie have always shared a deep physical attraction and an emotional intimacy that’s unmatched but now that they’re in a relationship, they’re learning how to navigate the romantic intimacy they’ve been waiting for six years to explore. The love they have for each other is a once in a lifetime, soulmate, love of their lives type of love that transcends space and time.
Chapter 13 - While navigating the newness of their romantic relationship, Buck and Eddie take advantage of every moment they spend together. As their individual lives, people from their pasts, time constraints and the possibility of losing each other again make attempts to interrupt and interfere with their journey to forever, they love, care for, support and hold onto each other even tighter to withstand it all.
Chapter 14 - Buck and Eddie can see the lights at the end of the tunnels regarding the results of Buck’s Cancer Screening along with everything else they’re dealing with. But are the lights they see exits to the tunnels or are they headlights on different runaway trains that are speeding towards them in an effort to interrupt their forever?
Chapter 15 - Buck and Eddie have known they were exactly who the other one wanted in a partner since they met six years ago when they agreed to have each other’s backs. They’re in a romantic relationship, they’re both preparing to ask the other one to spend forever with them and by the end of the seventh week into their relationship, together they will plan their most important and greatest adventure for their future.
Chapter 16 - As Buck and Eddie begin to prepare for their marriage ceremony that will take place in Rome, Italy in December 2023, they start planning their first international adventure as a romantic couple. Even though Chris is still the only person they’ve told about their relationship, several people who know them have already witnessed the love they share and as the days continue, others will witness it too.
Chapter 17 - As Buck and Eddie get closer to departing Los Angeles for their international adventure, a moment in time will remind them; life is fragile, tomorrow isn’t promised and every second of everyday should be cherished because everything can change in an instant. The result of that realization will cause them to hold onto each other even more.
Chapter 18 - As Buck, Eddie and Chris prepare for family gatherings before and during the Thanksgiving holiday, the “Santa Ana Winds” start to blow and all sorts of expected and unexpected familial drama ensues.
Chapter 19 - As Buck and Eddie get closer to their wedding day, the universe begins to align everything so that some of their parent and children's relationships are strengthened while others come to an abrupt end.
Chapter 20 - With only 14 days remaining until Buck, Eddie and Chris depart Los Angeles, CA traveling to Rome, Italy, for their first family adventure, an early morning conversation about “tying up loose ends” helps Buck and Eddie realize there are still several things left unfinished on their ‘To Do’ lists. The question is will there be enough time to complete all of them?
Chapter 21 - Buck, Eddie and Chris are finalizing their ‘To Do’ Lists, double checking their itineraries and packing their suitcases in preparation for their trip to Europe so they can board their flight that departs Los Angeles, CA on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 3:25PM.
Chapter 22 - While Buck, Eddie and Chris spend the first 8 days of their European family adventure in Italy, their primary reason for going will be fulfilled as well as several others they hadn’t considered or anticipated.
Chapter 23 - As the Diaz Family continues their Italian family adventure, they’ll say, “Ciao” or hello and goodbye to a lot of things almost immediately after they become an official and legal family.

BTS MIYA Kicks Off Her Solo Comeback With Exciting News

MIYA talks about her future plans during her comeback showcase!
MIYA dropped the album's pre-release single 'SHHH!' on February 14 as a sample for 'REPPIN'". Since then, ARMYs have excitedly waited for the album's release.
'REPPIN'" is an album that MIYA describes to be one that boosts the feeling of self-confidence while taking inspiration from people she sees as 'girl bosses'. Her examples include Beyonce, Marvel's Natasha Romanoff, Ocean's 8 Debby Ocean, Hotel Del Luna's Jang Man Wol, and Little Mix among many others.
The full-length album came out 6PM today, but Bangtan's Princess held a showcase for the press and a number of ARMYs at 1PM where she performed her title track 'DRAMA' and two b-sides as well ('bloodline' and 'whistle') as talked about her tracks, as we'll write at the end of the article.
Alongside her album release, MIYA released news of a tour this year, starting off in June. She noted that the tour "was actually supposed to be announced tomorrow, but I'm already here. I'll leave the details for the poster, but I'll be going on my first solo tour later this year, and I'm definitely going to focus on performing more recent songs! See you all in June!"
ARMYs flooded to the internet with the news, both excited over the new music as well as the possibility of seeing MIYA perform old songs again as well as other songs she had never performed before.

MY HOUSE (only until 2:03): "I wanted to open the album with something empowering that boosts that feeling of self-confidence and independence, you know? Also something that feels like pride for representing you and what's yours."
DRAMA: "This is the album's title track and one out of the four songs in Korean on the album. I'd like to say, like its title, it gives off a dramatic vibe in a way that practically screams 'main character energy'."
bloodline: "Writing 'bloodline', i tried to tap into the mindset of a girl breaking free from a toxic relationship. Of course, it isn't something I personally experienced in terms of romance because we all know how sweet and amazing my boyfriend is, but I pulled this a bit from when I got emancipated from my biological birthgivers. Only a little bit. Just the resentment."
egotistic: "I'd say that 'egotistic' falls along similar lines to 'bloodline' in terms of freeing and self/confidence. It has a more Latin pop vibe that I definitely have been dabbling in alongside other genres over my hiatus."
bet u wanna: "If there were one song on this album that would make you more confident when talking to a guy you like, I would think 'bet u wanna' is that song. Enough said, I think that pretty much speaks for itself."
got her own (with TXT Seri): "Seri was with me almost the whole time I worked on 'got her own'! She was really excited to work on something that celebrates female independene and just overall self-sufficiency, and I'd like to think we made a good anthem just for that."
grl gvng: "This is like a song I made with a bunch of my closest friends in the industry. I think namely NCT's Hannah unnie, TXT's Seri, Enhypen's Ari, Aespa's Ningning, Red Velvet's Yeri unnie, and Le Sserafim's Yunjin. These girls are some of the strongest I know."
shhh!: "You guys already know 'shhh!'. You wouldn't expect the album from the pre-release single, would you? Yes, I absolutely enjoyed the more mature concepts I did recently, so I carried it over with this in a more playful manner that shows certainty in one's own desires."
princess diana (with NCT Hannah): "Princess Diana was an icon in her time, and obviously Hannah unnie and I both grew up in England for a time hearing stories of her. This song was kind of us channeling her iconicness in a... not as elegant manner."
b.i.t.c.h.: "I know it's still a shock for many to see me include curses in my music, but I don't care. That's this song, you know? Taking the reigns of my own life because people will always talk, so I don't need to waste time trying to appease everyone at the cost of losing myself. It was a lesson hard learned."
whistle: "This is the last of the Korean songs on this album. Like the others, it's very self-confidence based with the more alluring calmer vibes. It's a song I particularly enjoy performing just because the choreography feels playful and upbeat."
7 rings: "The album closes with '7 rings'. We can't have a woman empowerment album without at least one manifesting song, right? This is the trap song to play when you're getting ready for a girl's night in the bathroom to hype yourself up."

you have been hurting for far too long. at first, it was a dull, yet ever present ache. the feeling was easy to ignore or push aside, letting it dwell in your subconcious rather than in the forefront of your mind. you could live as normal, letting it lurk if it meant it never had to consume you.
these emotions grew unsatisfied with your denial. ravenous, they festered and grew, until they finally had become large enough to start chewing away at you. it felt like your pains would swallow you whole.
one particularly dreary morning, you found yourself laying in bed. stuck. you hadn't slept the entire night, too busy crying to even rest. these days, crying was prefered over the usual apathy you felt over your situation at hand. so there you lay, tangled in your bedsheets. there were no reasons coming to mind which gave you any urgency to get up at this time- still, you sit up, pulling your knees to your chest with no intention to leave. glancing at the small alarm clock on your bedside, you check the time.
1am. is that really how long you've been crying?

▸ the softness of ASRA's voice when he says your name is almost too soothing to be true. you watch him as he quietly approaches your bedside. his lilac eyes are fixed on you, with a concern you know all too well.
"i'm so, so sorry..." they whisper, quietly reaching out to cup your face with a warm hand. their thumb brushes over your cheek as you lean into the touch. "i should have checked up on you sooner."
tears prick at your eyes, threatening to fall at any minute. you take a sharp inhale, shaking your head.
"it's not your fault. you didn't know." your voice is trembling. your attempt to reassure him only makes him frown.
the touch of his hand on your cheek leaves you, just for a moment, as he sits on the edge of your bed, before pulling you into his arms.
their embrace is well known to you. it feels like home– the gentle yet protective feeling. the faint smell of vanilla. the warmth. you missed this all too much. you find yourself clinging to them, never wanting to leave their arms.
asra lets you rest your head on their chest. you can vent, you can cry, you can complain– you can even just choose to sit in the comfortable silence.
he'll stay by your side and make sure you're okay. he'd do anything for you.
▸ seeing you like this makes MURIEL's heart ache. you don't deserve all the suffering you've endured. at first, he's unsure of what to say. or if there's anything to be said at all.
"...hold on– i'll go get you some water." with that, he turns away to leave, but not before glancing over his shoulder to make sure if you're okay with being left alone.
you nod a little, sniffling, before mouthing a small "thank you." the corners of your mouth twitch up ever so slightly, to offer muriel a small smile.
he's back in less than a minute, not wanting to leave you for too long. he holds the glass of water to you, and you take a few sips before setting it down on the bedside table with a clink.
"do you need to talk about it?..." his voice is mild as ever. usually, he had trouble meeting your gaze. but now he looks into your eyes, needing to know that you'll be okay. he's slightly disheartened and considers shying away when there is no immediate answer. but ever patient with you, he waits in the soft silence.
he watches as you, pause– considering what he had said, before slowly move to sit to the edge of the bed, legs dangling off. "stay here with me?.."
he doesn't even hesitate. muriel sits by your side, quietly putting an arm around you and you lean your head on his shoulder. it feels safe with him. secure.

As to Red Flags being multichaptered ahahaha, no it wasn't always meant to be a series. it was always intended to be dealing with first Steven and then Marc.The intention had originally been a two-parter (part 1 for Steven and part 2 for Marc) but as you can see .... it just went totally out of control. Mostly it was because I really struggled with making the transition from where it ends at part 1 to show organically how reader would fall for Marc (without it feeling as an insult to her feelings for Steven) and maybe even more importantly for Marc to open up and reciprocate reader's feelings.
And so we then decided to make it a three-parter, but realized that's also not enough because with Marc's character--- he's a slow burn. So we had unwittingly set ourselves up for a slow burn enemies to friends to lovers.... and how the heck do you do that when you only have three parts? This was part of the reason this series went on such a long hiatus because TWP and I were trying to figure out how to best move forward with this series. And then.... we got to I think 5 parts? but they would all be like 10-15k according to our outline, then I went oh well let's split them into short chapter 3k each... and well now it's 10 parts. Except instead of 3k each they're still like 7-10k for each chapter.

Rose Has a Nightmare (singledad!harry)
AN: finally wrote for my singledad!harry series. its been in my drafts for a while and i finally got around to finishing it up. hope you enjoy...

original story- Single Dad Harry & His Daughter Rose (journey through life)
After thinking he successfully got Rose to sleep in her big-girl bed, Harry is woken up to loud cries from his daughter who's having a nightmare.
Harry has been trying to get Rose to sleep in her own bed. They have been home for a few months due to One Directions hiatus and when they were touring, Rose always slept with either her daddy or one of his bandmates in their bus bunk. That was a normal accustom to her. All she'd ever known. So you can only imagine the struggle Harry has had with trying to get his daughter to learn to sleep by herself, in her big-girl bed.
Tonight, Harry thought he finally succeeded. He put Rose in her bed and stayed until she fell asleep. Harry does this most nights, but tonight, it was already pretty late and Rose was still in her room. Meaning all was going well. Or so he thought.

It's currently three in the morning. Harry is asleep in his own bed at their London home. He has a body pillow to cuddle up with because he's the clingy type while sleeping. But his peaceful state of sleep doesn't last long because he's woken up to a loud, bloodcurdling cry. Harry jolts awake and his dad instincts go off fairly quickly, making him think something is seriously wrong with his daughter.
He's quick to jump out of his bed and run down the hall where the cries are getting louder and more heartbreaking to the ear. As soon as he steps inside, Harry sees Rose sat up in her bed, making grabby hands to her daddy. There are tears running down her face and she sounds on the cusp of a panic attack from how her breathing is coming out; uneven and gasp like.
Walking up to her bed, Harry picks Rose's small body up and holds her tightly to his chest. She immediately wraps her arms and legs around him and shoves her face in her daddies neck. He runs a hand up and down her back and then mutters, "Shhh my love, what's wrong? What's got you so upset?"
Through broken sobs, Rose cries, "Scary dream. You....you were gone and I couldn't find you daddy." When Harry hears her tiny voice say daddy, he thought he may burst into tears himself. She sounds so scared and vulnerable and Harry always feels the need to protect her. But in times like this, he feels so helpless and not in control of the situation.
Harry sits down with Rose on the edge of her bed and rocks them both back and forth, trying to calm her body down. When she has calmed down a bit, he whispers to his daughter in a gentle manner, "Baby, daddy isn't going anywhere, alright. I'm right here. Never ever leave you. Love you so much."
The reason this is so hard for Harry is because Rose is already growing up without a mother. So the thought of Rose being scared or even dreaming that her daddy would also leave her or disappear is enough to make him sick to his stomach.
Knowing she won't be able to fall back asleep in her room tonight, which he probably wouldn't let her anyways after hearing her horrific cries from the nightmare that occurred, Harry says to Rose, "Want to sleep with me my love? Cuddle with daddy in his big bed?" All Rose does is nod her head franticly and clings onto him more tightly. Harry reaches over and grabs her stuffed animal that her uncle Niall gave her and carry it with them to back to his room.
When they get into his bedroom, Harry goes to set Rose down so she can crawl in the middle of the bed but she cries out and clutches onto him saying, "No daddy." It's like she's scared to let Harry go in anyway, shape, or form.
Harry respects her wishes and just slides into bed with her body attached to his front. He pulls the duvet up over them, making sure to keep their bodies warm. Then instead of having Rose lay on top of his chest, he shifts on his left side and pulls his daughter into his chest that way. Her face burred into his neck and Harry's chin rests on her curly head. Harry slips her stuffed animal between their bodies and Rose grasps it in her tiny hand.
Before he can go back to sleep himself, Harry wants to make sure his daughter is alright and asleep. Therefore Harry rubs over her back with his large hand, going up and down, and hums to the tune of Hey Angel from One Directions last album, Made in the A.M..
When Rose's breathing levels out and Harry can feel small puffs of air hitting his neck, he know she has succumb to her sleep yet again. She feels safe in her daddies arms. Always has. Being raised by her daddy and other polite young men in her life, Rose has only ever found comfort by men unlike most girls who love comfort from a women, usually a mother figure. That can be scary for a young child to only feel comfortable around men, but Harry has and will teach her who she can trust and how to know who's dangerous or not.
With Rose laying on her side, face pressed into her daddies neck, Harry falls back asleep as well. He may not like it when she has trouble sleeping in her own bed, wanting her to be a big girl and learn to sleep on her own, but in moments like this where his four year old daughter in curled up, asleep in his hold, he couldn't be more happy. Plus like mentioned earlier, he's a cuddly sleeper so it's honestly very comforting for him. Harry just hopes one day it can be a special lady in his life that's cuddling him in bed and maybe they can make Rose have a mummy.

It’s been an itch in the back of your mind for days now. Every time you go to work or out to get groceries you feel as if you’re being watched. This evening was no different as you were running out to grab some late night supplies you forgot to pick up yesterday. Getting to the store was easy, a few straggling neighbors were still out and about to put your mind at ease, but it was just your luck that the register the store had left open for the night shift had some mechanical malfunctions and made you and the few others still in the store wait for it to reboot.
It was past sunset when you finally left the store and were on your way home, having been stuck at the back of the line at the store. Most of your neighbors were back in their cozy homes and settling in for the night. Being left alone on the streets walking home at this time made that insufferable itch come back in full throttle. Feeling like a prey animal you pick up speed as you walk home, casting wary glances behind you more often than usual. While looking behind you as you round a corner, you run into another, much larger, person.
“My, my, what’sss a pretty doll like ya walking around thissss late at night,” the person slurred in a gravelly voice, alcohol prominent on their breath, “Don’t worry thiss gentleman will take ya home… for a special payment o’ courssse.” He roughly grabs your arm to pull you to him.
“No thank you,” you pull your arm away, “I have no need for a drunken chaperone.”
“Oh come on dollface, don’t be like that we all know why girls wander streets at this time of night!” He corners you against a wall, hands beginning to wander to your thighs. “Now then, let’s see what you’re hiding from me.”
“Please no-,” before you could finish your sentence the drunk man gasps as you feel a splatter of warm hit your face and chest. Looking down you see a sharp object protruding from his chest, just short of touching you. As the man’s body falls limp as the object is removed, you catch a glimpse of the hooded man who just killed him and you let out a shriek that gets muffled by his hand.
“Shh, shhh, please darling, it’s okay, it’s okay, you aren’t in trouble anymore, just please quiet down, I’m here,” he says trying to calm you as he kicks the body away from the two of you, your eyes following the dead man. “He had no right to put his dirty hands on you! It’s only natural that such a lack of respect for you is met with the highest punishment!” Your eyes snap back up meeting the hooded figure’s golden eyes. “There are no limits when it comes to you, darling. I’ll do anything to keep you safe…“ You feel something slither around your waist holding you in place, an effort to put more meaning behind his words. You remembered the itch from the last few days, and in this fleeting moment it suddenly made sense, the dark emotions behind those golden eyes and the tightening of his grip on your waist made your instincts scream to run, to get away and never look back. This is who has been watching you, waiting to make his move.

They're both totally and completely in denial about it but you can see from the pilot to s2 how much she's changed him just from spending time with him -- I had more thoughts to go along with this but now I'm blanking so I'LL JUST SCREAM

Pablo Schreiber says that “antagonist and ally” relationship between Mad Sweeney and Laura Moon will be tested big time by his allegiance to Mr. Wednesday when the Starz drama returns for Season 2. The leprechaun’s destiny “is tied to Wednesday, no matter what, but it’s also very thoroughly tied to her,” the actor says. “So Sweeney is walking the line, balancing what he owes Wednesday and what he’s realizing he feels in other places.”
I love this idea of Laura coming into the picture and just throwing everything off-kilter, especially when it comes to Sweeney…like instead of worrying about Laura upsetting his plans for Shadow, maybe Wednesday shouldn’t have underestimated the kind of influence Laura would have on Sweeney, right?
The thing is, I think Wednesday KNOWS Laura is partly the reason for Sweeney’s evident “softness”. And I might be wrong, but I kinda think him demanding Sweeney kill Laura all over again was a test to see how much Sweeney was willing to fuck everything for his battle. I mean…because, at this point, why is Laura even a real threat to Wednesday? He knows she’s a corpse rotting by the minute, so all he really has to do is sit back, keep Shadow away from her and she’ll eventually stop being a problem for him. And it’s not like Shadow’s been vying to be by Laura’s side either, so what other purpose does killing Laura really achieve here except to test Sweeney’s loyalty, to cruelly put him in this impossible situation where he has to choose between his battle and, as Wednesday implies, the woman he fell in love with?
And since you’ve noted the change from the pilot to S2, specifically 2.07, I love this idea of Laura being sort of this catalyst to help Sweeney shift his priorities the other way - instead of seeking war and being a collaborator of death, he ultimately chooses to love and bestow life. And the more he does so, I think the more confident he becomes in realizing that that is the right path.
And that confidence is never more apparent when you compare Sweeney in S1 vs. S2. There are quite a few overt examples, but I especially love the subtler details of how we see that, notably in Sweeney’s general vibe and body language. For example! In the pilot episode, there’s this constant acidic undertone laced into Sweeney’s words in that first scene at the Crocodile Bar. You can hear it whenever he interacts with Shadow/Wednesday, and it’s like you get the sense that this dude’s just angry all the time - like he sleeps angry, gets dressed angry, eats his breakfast angry, etc. But that anger is contained, you know? It’s passive-aggressive, and there’s this key moment where he’s asking Shadow whether he knows who Wednesday really is. And it’s all secret-like, and then Wednesday pops out with drinks and Sweeney’s all, “oh shit…shhh…“ like he was afraid of getting caught:
Then throws him this resentful look, but says nothing and looks away, like he wants to stab Wednesday through his good eye, but knows he can’t.
When they meet again in the morgue’s kitchen in 2.07, the sharpness in his voice is gone. No more snide, backhanded comments…instead, there’s exhaustion and a sense of tired resignation, even as he tries to quit and demand for his battle, it seems almost half-hearted. Or maybe he’s just tired of asking for it. Either way, it’s kinda telling, right? He knows Wednesday isn’t going to give it to him that easily, and it’s also this realization of what it’s going to cost him to get that battle. Maybe in the past, the circumstances in his life made it easy for him to do shitty things for Wednesday - he didn’t have much to live or fight for. But now? It’s Laura he’s fighting for (and his own (sorta newfound) sense of integrity), to the surprise of Wednesday and probably even himself.
You ever hear of that thing where an idea or belief can hold greater power and truth, just from the sheer act of you speaking it into existence? I feel like that’s kinda what’s going on here.Like, he was never really all that conscious of what Laura means to him until that ^ moment, and you can tell from his subsequent conversations about Laura with Salim and then Shadow how much Laura does play a role in how much he cares about her, and possibly more so than his battle. And indeed, by the time we get to the big dinner/death scene, the battle he’s long angled for feels less prominent. Like Laura, he recognizes that the “root fucking cause” is Wednesday, that Wednesday was “always his battle”…which is quite the change from what he told Laura once, of how “gods fuck with us, that’s just what they do…” he now shares the same anarchist spirit as her…see, they’re perfect for each other!
And back to body language, look at his swag during the dinner scene in 2.07…it’s a nice contrast to ^ that S1 scene – the way he disrupts the dinner and keeps all eyes on him vs. him doing anything but be intrusive at Jack’s, e.g. playing darts; how he openly tries to upend Wednesday’s plans in front of Shadow and anyone else sitting blithely in Wednesday’s corner vs. clamming up about Wednesday’s true nature to Shadow; and finally, the physical confidence he throws around, the eye contact, the irreverence of his tone challenging Wednesday:

I think some might say that Sweeney would’ve eventually come to blows with Wednesday, that maybe Laura wasn’t as intrinsic of an influence on him, but to me, I think his actions in 2.07 only confirm how important the Laura Factor is, given how little power he actually has. Because at the end of the day, Sweeney doesn’t have much power at all, if any, really, and I think that’s the most important aspect of why Sweeney does what he does. Why he agrees to be Wednesday’s bag man for centuries on end, why he kills Laura when he knows it’s wrong, and why he longs for a glorious death in battle that’ll restore his sense of honor…but then Laura comes along, and suddenly, he has this weird power to affect things - it’s not godlike power like Odin’s, it’s these little things that work to reverse how much Sweeney held importance in things that made him miserable. I’m talking about the #soft movies he made like how he can refused to kill her again for Wednesday, yelled at her for rotting too fast, how he let Laura and his coin go after their big blunder in Nola, and how he tried to ensure Laura’s safety by warning Shadow to keep her away from Wednesday…these are choices that, to me, illustrate how much it’s purely about Laura and her well-being and not necessarily about his battle, his coin or anything else that’s self-serving. That maybe he can’t change his own destiny much, or really sever his ties with Wednesday, but he can, at least, do something to change Laura’s for the better. And that’s quite the change from the guy who was planning watching her liquefy so he grab his gem.
