I was wondering if you would tell me (your vision) about Sigyn and Hela?

Sigyn has been with me for some time now, and though she doesn’t communicate much, I feel very connected to her. Through her I had a couple of meaningful encounters with Loki, even though I don’t work with him directly. I would like to strengthen my bond to her but not sure how.

Hela recently made herself known in things I’d been carrying for easily over a year. It never occurred to me that she was there until she came out almost shouting. I feel like she’s expecting me to give her her due but I don’t know what to offer her.

I’m hoping that hearing about other pagan’s ideas and relationships to these goddesses might help me get a clue.

Ok sure thing. I dont work with Sigyn much but perspectives are good.

So Sigyn. For me shes a goddess of strenght in tuff times, a goddess of strengt and light in the dark. This is also why for me she is included during Disablot, when the nights are long and the the world still cold, to find strength in the one that stod for endless nights awaiting light and reelife.

I find her also as a goddess of victory, makes sense do to her name meaning "female friend of victory". I find her surprisingly innocent compared to her husband, with a good nature, but very choosy of who she helps. Like, less active. I love that you also, just like me, finds her also not comunicating much haha. In short I see her, as a burning start, The one that burns the britghtes in the darkest moments. Idk if this helpes sense I dont work with her much, but hope its of some help.

Idk what would would be the perfect offering for you to give her, its more what the offerings means to you that matters, the symbolic meaning.

But I offer her just good foood, bread, baked goods and a lot of drinks, wine, mead, honey water and hard alcohol. But try what feels right for you.

But if i was you, I say, maybe the best thing you can give her is your time.

She is one of the least talked about goddesses and with not that manny who do rituals to her often, most pepole are all about her husband or Thor or Odin and Freya. So I say, just sit down in a Nice place and think and feel, dont expect her to comunicate a lot or something grand or mind blowing magical thing. But just sitt and be, and have her as your focus. Let that time and moment and space, be a offering to the one all to manny forgotten.

And then we have Hela. Or as I call her, Hel.

Hel I worked with a lot. For me she is maybe not death it self, but death centric, or the one that rules desth. I see her as the one that watch over bones and graves, queen of the dead and to whom all shall go to sooner or latter. Like the one that watch over those in the grave and your ancestors. As well as her being a direct line to them.

When I hold rites to her around Alvablot, I often wear a wodden or ceramic mask I made, something other local hesthens sometimes do as well, but a cloth works just as fine to hide your face. Its to honor her during the blot while also protect yourself and not bring death in to your life. We also have a statue of her in the Temple year around, but coverd her up with a cloth, do to the whole temple just feeling diffrent and well, full of death after we put her statue there. But I dont see her as bad or evil. More of a, loving embrace, like a wathfull kind hug that I one day get to trully feel. So its not that Im afraid of her, just carefull and respectfull of her.

Its hard to describe without getting to personal. But I hope you get it.

To her I often decorate the altar with dead colourfull leafs, a lot of candels and bones and teeth and animal parts. Offerings to her may include dried flowers, something ones alive but now dead, yeat still remaining its beauty. As well mead, wine, baked goods, candy, fruits and meat from the hunt.

A thing that I do tho, thats not really for her but that I like to do, is happening soon tbh.

Around all souls night/all saints night here in Sweden when the graveyeards are filled with candels, I go supper dupper late and often also the night after. Like when there is no one there but like 1000 candels are lit. I just calmly walk around and relit each and every candle that for some reason or other gone out during that one night. Someone was there earlier so the person is belloved and special to someone. I dont light my own on strangers graves, but I make sure that all those candels put there with love and sorrow get to burn to the very end and ligt up the night for both the dead and the living. Its not for everyone, but its a thing for me.

You also get to see a bunch of spooky stuff if you are lucky haha.

I find it intresting that you find her as shouting, I see her more as quiet and always in controll, with a calm in mind. Not in form tho. Thats more loud. My fiance who do a lot of Sejdr work describe her as flashes. Not half a corps and half a healthy woman. But like if you were in a room of blinkning lights and she go from looking dead to looking alive over and over again, no one of those forms was true to her being, because she is fully both at the same time, the living death.

Now you dont have to do it the way I do. Try things out and dont be afraid. Try the offerings I give her if you like, but its ok to just experiment and see what works for you.

And as always, the way I see them is not absolut or "the true way". Everyone see them and work with them diffrent and I always want pepole to try to find what works for themself. But I hope my perspektive was of any help.

you inspire me a lot as an artist <3 when you were still figuring out your style and learning basic stuff, how did you keep yourself motivated? im at that point where im still learning basic anatomy and it frustrates me enough to make me lose all motivation

Honestly I have no clue. I was mostly drawing for myself and never actually intended to like. Become an artist? I tried to apply for an art school (high school, not college btw. No clue how other school systems work but yeah) and I somehow got in? And we had figure drawing and stuff so I HAD to do this sorta stuff for school basically.

Tbh art school taught me that I most likely do not want art to be my job I just want to draw stuff for myself.

So uhhh this is very bad advice because I don't really have any advice djfjrkfj I just had to do my school work which was art and figure drawing and perspective (I HATED perspective. My god the amount of times we've had to draw a cube.... )

So I guess try to like... figure out what you like drawing and try to get better at that? You can tell yourself that when you get better you will be able to draw stuff you can't do right now or idk.

I'm rambling I don't know how else to put any of this FJVKRKGKKE

Just have fun, look at references and try to figure out how stuff works and why it looks the way it does.

One thing I did like doing in art school that we had as homework most of the time were the quick few second sketches.

Take a pen or a marker or something, some nice color if you want, go sit in a park or somewhere and try to sketch people in the park. Literally just quick sketches, no erasing or correcting, just do a few quick lines.

That's supposed to make you get a grasp a little bit of grasp at anatomy and capture movement. If you combine this with something like figure drawing where you just focus on doing studies of anatomy, best done with a live model, you'll get better and better.

I should keep doing these things too probably but tbh I don't really care if my art gets better atp I just like doing this for fun.

Hope you like my non-advice because I got real rambly. It's 1 am I have an excuse.

Hello i am back for five seconds to talk abt that welcome home update bc WHAT !!! i have .. so many thoughts and the current speculation isnt rlly doing it or the source material justice. im not gonna add any links here, u can find those urself, ill just be going thru my very unorganized thoughts. anyway!

so while i cant make any confident speculation as we're so early into the project, however i think the new update confirmed my suspicion that wally Is the one sending the restoration project these letters. specifically in the staff only page, where on one of the emails, there's smth in white highlighted marker that reads "-wally darling" like a signature of some sort. i could be wrong but idk who else would be doing this yk? esp in the damaged state the restored materials are in? its also indicated by one of the staff having a dream abt wally lookng at them as a phone rings. its also clear bc of the many eye and spiral imagery throughout the page.

another thing i found interesting was in the 1-14 pages, how near the end, the characters look to wally for input. i think its bc in the show ur supposed to follow wally around as he's technically a narrator/observer of some sort, indicated by one of the scripts in an earlier update, with wally speaking to the viewer. but i wonder why it cut off so abruptly?? idk

so far my "theory" is that smth happened in the neighborhood that caused wally to lose his friends hence in the guestbook he mentions he cant find them or has no memories of them, that or ppl's lack of memories of the show causes his world (or the show itself) to fall apart, which would make sense. idk if they died or anything but idk smth happened. i also saw someone say that what could be happening is that two worlds exist, one where welcome home was a real show that existed in the 70s, and one without. we're seeing the world without.

i don't think wally or home is evil, or that home is behind anything or that smth is happening in home OR that wally is stuck in home. i dont think that clown would make smth so cliche, and while cliches r fine since everyone has a diff spin on it, i feel like itd be narratively unsatisfying. its clear that wally is desperate, he wants to be seen, remembered in some way. maybe its why he's always facing the camera, symbolizing that desire? idk maybe im delving too deep LMFAO dont blame me i literally spent Hours looking for clues and refreshing twitter. its also clear that wally isnt evil bc i believe its him apologizing for the letters/materials looking so fucked up and taking a toll on ppl. maybe it isnt him but itd make sense

wally can also see us. through our fan art, through our support, he can see whats going on in the outside world hence how he's able to break the fourth wall and send the restoration project the envelopes (specifically eddie's envelopes). i say this bc of this line if u type "/a" on the website.

“I have more eyes than I did before. You know how to draw eyes. You draw mine many times. I know it is thanks to you, neighbor, that I can see. But it is still… I can’t… See."

now that he doesnt have access to the guestbook, he's desperate for diff ways to connect to us and the restoration project. he just wants to be remembered. i dont think him breaking the fourth wall is too out of the ordinary considering he appeared in an interview, signifying he must know of the outside world, that his world isnt real, he's played by a voice actor, and so on.

just saw your take on the podcast and i agree. feel like even if it is satirical which some people are saying it is, there is a line and that line was crossed.

i’ve seen online that the hosts are jewish and gay so people were saying them two were allowed to make their jokes abt jewish ppl and gay ppl but honestly idk i try and stay off stan twitter because everything is taken out of context i never know what’s a good source.

listened to the whole episode myself and i only laughed once and it happened to be at matty getting caught jacking off because god that is just awkward. after that, there wasn’t anything funny in the actual episode and even if we’re all “a bunch of snowflake twitter stans” as we’re being called online like i’d rather that than be a bigot tbh.

are you staying away from the situation or are you actively debating it? i tried to share my thoughts on twitter but was told i do not understand satirical comedy or what centre-left politics are (even though i’m one of the most political and educated people you’ll meet) by some man so i left twitter for today.

not sure what to do because i am a massive fan of their music and hold it extremely close to me, it’s also my special interest as an autistic person and hard to give up easily- any advice? :)

what is not fine is this ask (/hj). do you have any idea of how difficult it is to understand something you have never experienced? it's hell. (i would know - i still have zero clue about what gender is all about. like people feel that shit? incredible)

I'll try my best to explain, anon, but i don't promise anything.

first of all, love is a feeling/emotion. it's always different, i might feel one way but someone else might say "THAT'S SOME BULLSHIT". it's fine. it's also different in regards of who's directed at. (it's worth nothing that im the kind of person who believes that love - like art - is everywhere and in everything. some people disagree. it's okay). the love i feel for my best friend is different to the one i feel for rpbg. how? idk. it's different though, and i don't mean that in terms of intensity - the way i feel (in my head in my body etc) is different. try and think about happiness and how knowing you've done a good job st school/uni/work is different from the happiness you feel when you're, idk, petting a cat or listening to your favourite song. you kinda get it?

love itself does make you feel a bit sick, yes. you feel like you're having a cold and your stomach shrinks and your legs shake and when the other person is away your heart ACHES. when he kissed me the first time i thought i was going to pass out. love is painful and it's beautiful because the amount of happiness i feel when im in love it's unparalleled. and being loved back it's the cure to the sickness above. it's all chemicals in your brain and it is a fucking drug

regarding the love i feel for rpbg, it is a mix. it's affection for sure, but there's also a romantic factor to it. like there's something else that's added to the affection. the word attraction is correct - i feel attracted to, towards, him. i wanna be close to him, touch him, hug him, cuddle him, etc. there is also this hopefulness of dreaming a life together - now in most of my thoughts he's there, he's present. it's a really nice thing. i also find myself thinking stuff along the lines of "oh we didn't do [thing]! ah, well, we have so much time in our life to do that", which, for someone who was highly suicidal up until not long ago it's just. AH. it makes me go crazy

also i trust him and he's funny as shit and when he starts talking i just!! want to listen!!! to him!!! he has Stuff To Say. also he's so fucking pretty (<- not really relevant but he's like a blorbo to me at this point and im rotating him in my mind and He.)

oooo are we talking about fe engage. ive said my piece on it like a billion times but i dont think itll hurt repeating myself.

when i first saw it revealed i was shocked and devastated that the leaks of That Fucking Thing (alear) were real. i was so shocked that this design got approved. and that's how i felt (initially) about every design. tbh masc alear has grown on me but fem alear is still so fucking ugly. then some more designs were revealed and i was like you know...maybe this isn't that bad. the gameplay looks pretty good. i started entertaining the idea of getting on release day (NOT preordering it though fuck that)

then they revealed more shit and i was like nevermind what the fuck is this. i honestly have no clue what theyre even going for with this game. actually i think i do, this is Fire Emblem Fanservice The Game and they're simultaneously trying to appeal to both old and new fans. i heard this is apparently an anniversary game so a fanservicey game tracks if it's supposed to be a game that like, celebrates the history of fe i guess???

and lemme talk about the art. here's the thing: mika pikazo is a good artist. her 2d art for engage is actually pretty gorgeous. but the 3d models are so ugly. SO ugly and SO same facey. and also like...let me reiterate that mika pikazo IS A GOOD ARTIST. but her character designs for engage are so insanely hit or miss.

idk what to think about this game honestly. im probably still going to get it but that still depends entirely on what people have to say about it. the silver lining is that the leakers said that theres going to be an fe4 remake and doubled down on it when engage was announced, they even gave a time frame for it's announcement/release (later this year/early next year)

Predictions for every 2B episode

Cant wait to see what i get right fjsmfmfm

This is just the main things that i am predicting for the episodes, i do think we'll get more Raine stuff after follies, for example) but i dont know when it could be (maybe on clouds on the horizon on this example i gave)

Follies at the coven day parade: as synopsis says, rescue mission at coven day parade. We WILL see Raine, maybe the other batts will be rescued. Not sure if Raine will, though. Hoping for Hunter appearance. Hopefully some continuation of what happened in yesterday's lie

Elsewhere and elsewhen: like it says on the synopsis, Lilith and Luz go search for more Philip info. Which seems like it will be time travel or even a mix of potions (scrying potion modified maybe?), oracle and illusion magic. Im leaning more towards them not actually time travelling but still managing to peek into the past. We will get some much needed Philip lore. Maybe even the appearance of him and his brother

Any sport a storm: Willow will be a fucking badass, can't wait to see her shine with her new hairstyle. My dear beloved. Also i cant wait to see what sport is it that she joins. Im not sure if the shot of her and her team with the abomination is from this episode or not.

Hunter will be on Hexside. Idk what could be his mission but i cannot wait for the stupid shenanigans. This episode probably will be really funny. Hopefully Flapjack and Hunter will have cute interactions

And VINEY IS BACK

Reaching out: hopefully Vee and Camila centric. Maybe she gets the messages and videos finally (which is a terrifying though since, yknow, that would mean that the portal got fixed). Besides that i dont know what else could happen.

That or maybe Luz tried to reach out to someone, maybe another attempt at her portal or she reaches out to the owlfam or someone else (maybe someone who does know how to help on making the portal)

Them's the breaks, kid: probably where the Lumity screenshot comes from. Luz trying to grasp on what to do and she and Amity go around kinda bummed but trying to know what to do about all this and spending time with one another. And something happens to make them gasp. Probably something Tibbles did. Tibbles could appear here since he was show being hit with an abomination fist

Hollow mind: somehow Hunter and Luz end up inside Belos' mind and it will probably be a really good episode. Expecting angst and at least one big reveal for Hunter. And a lot of lore hopefully

Edge of the world: King's dad plot line continues (maybe some other hints on the previous episodes happen) and they get on the place with a lot of the creatures that are the same species as King, maybe away from the Titan's corpse

Labyrinth runners: i have no idea. Maybe the sport Willow joined? Or even something to do with the looking glass ruins? No clue but i have a feeling this one isnt that Luz centric

O Titan, where art thou: this is a scary title. Also dont know what it will be. Probably Belos/Day of Unity related.

Clouds on the Horizon: just realized i never even read this episode title until now. Also no idea.

King's Tide: Very king centric, maybe the machine in the promo trailer will appear here? Emotional gut punch I'm pretty sure. Maybe a darkest hour moment

hewwo sorry 2 bother you n if im not asking the right person but ive been thinking of drawing in that oldschool warriors art style using mspaint and JSpaint (recreation of the REALLY old paint program) and i was wondering if u had any tips on using the programs? i watch lots of old ms paint/paint speedpaints n the artists seem 2 b using tricks to bypass the limits of the program but idk how, like getting rid of sketches/underdrawings for example

ill just put what tricks i know from mspaint here, no clue if they would apply to jspaint but its worth a shot:

getting rid of sketches/underdrawings:

- select the whole drawing and cut it - set color 2 to the color of your sketch and color 1 to your lineart color

- paste the image, while its still selected go to "select" and check this box

- boom sketch should be gone (alternatively, you could also set the colors and check the box before pasting the drawing) - you can also do this to remove solid backgrounds from finished drawings so long as the background isnt a color thats already in the drawing :)

adding pixelly textures/patterns:

- draw something random or keep it blank, go to save as and go to the dropdown and click "monochrome bitmap" - play around with the bucket tool, drawing will make black lines but the bucket tool will yield neat little textures - to get color, select and copy the black and white versions, open a new canvas and paste them. you can either paintbucket the whole thing, or manually color underneath it and re-paste the lineart/texture on top

- this is another way to potentially remove sketches/under drawings, as saving this way removes all color, but the other method is much quicker and easier

custom brush sizes:

- pick any brush, any size - hold ctrl and tap the + or - key on your numpad as much as you want (sorry idk how to do this without numpad)

S2 WISHFUL THINKING

hey hi hello! i haven’t really been active on tumblr but i wanted to get back into the swing of being active and posting often. so.

i decided i will take note of some of my predictions, hopes, wishes etc. for Season 2 of Rainbow High!

so i kinda wanna just cover the things we canonically have seen aka specific events and drama that has gotten introduced

- The New Roommates / Series 3 Girls

i feel like we will definitely see more of them within the coming episodes. rainbow high literally advertised the new teams as like… i think the second or third teaser for the new season

it’s interesting to me because. this makes me think of What The Runway Project is? what could it possibly be? i believe i made a post about this in the past but the main theory (and theory i believe the most in) would be a Stage Production of sorts. i mean… it makes sense!

the twins are both Performing Arts focus and are definitely the antags this season. so why wouldn’t they cause trouble in regard to a stage play? plus, bella is back. she’s literally a set designer! we have never seen her do any set designing (other than making a sketch) so it would be fun to see that! if river were to get more focus this season, he would definitely have an outlet to channel his Performing Arts creativity! plus… Daria is a song writer so like. imagine if we were to get music out of that? please. the possibilities are endless.

im also eager to see the series 3 girls dynamics. like are the rest of the girls (gabriella, georgia, emmy and daphne) all roomed together? do they get along? will they all be just as dramatic as stella, sheryl and daria’s dynamic?

but anyway. whatever the drama and the semester project is, the new teammates definitely seem to be playing a crucial role in this season.

- The Twins

i’m actually really eager to see more of them. i feel like not enough people are talking about them? season 2 is actually really interesting so far…. maybe more so than season 1… and i feel like we are going to have to thank the twins for that at some point lol

like. idek what they’re planning on doing but. i’m excited to see what it is! they’ll probably be involved in the semester project or at least causing problems to all of the roommates and teams. they’ll definitely have something going on with bella. and it seems that they have a good bond with karma (after the KWK we got). so maybe they’ll have input in any potential drama with Karma. which leads me to

- Karma VS. Violet

so. this drama has been teased at for like. ever. for what feels like forever.

this moment in Karma’s bio PLUS the commentary about violet from her and the twins in the recent KWK episode. but anyway. i’m actually super interested in whatever this drama could be??? like. why is karma watching.

we know violet adores karma, she really wants to have her in the vi life. so i’m sure she basically looks up to her! but like. will karma actually genuinely be nice with violet? keep a distance? make remarks like she did in her recent vlog? i don’t know. idk what to expect. of course it’ll have to do with vlogging or something.

- Bella

ok so there is a few things to note with bella. i’m still interested in if bella will accept to do an interview with Karma for her vlog? if so, i wonder how that would go. and i wonder how violet would feel about it. like the very last time bella was featured in vi’s vlog was on a bad note (even though they made up) but like. idk AAA

also i’m wondering how bella is gonna handle being back to rainbow high. because so far it seems she’s having trouble fitting in. will the key to her fitting in be Jade? will Jade help her figure everything out? or would it be someone else?

as much as i’d love Jade to be the reason Bella starts to feel more at home, i also love the other idea of Amaya being the reason bella feels comfortable again. Amaya was once the new girl (and of course in an awkward position because she was essentially a replacement for bella’s spot in the runway group) but. she didn’t fit in. she had to find her place at rainbow high… and it took her until the runway show to be able to truly feel comfortable.

and like. i’ve been rooting for bella/amaya dynamic for awhile now. i see a lot of potential in this duo. we know they somewhat have tension. i mean. bella had a really awkward confrontation with amaya and that was rly their first and last conversation. sure they’ve been around each other like in the music video, at the end of s1, and when bella walked into the girls dorm s2ep2 but like. that’s it.

SO ANYWAY. what i’m trying to get at is that these two definitely need to become friends. i mean. they have a LOT in common. i was talking about the new girl situation because i feel like they can relate in that way. they both had an awkward entrance into rainbow high and could bond over that. it took amaya awhile to feel at home at rainbow high… so maybe she could become friends with bella and help her feel at home! they’re both very determined leader types. they’re really passionate and! they have the same friend group! so why not become friends?

- Jade and Bella

of course i will wonder about these two! i have no clue what to expect with them. the fandom and myself are really really really wanting to see these two become a canon sapphic couple. i really want to see this happen! and mga knows this. mga knows we want to see jella happen. i mean, they literally snatched the ship name from us and plastered it into their vlogs. so they KNOW

anyway. these two are literally going through it rn. the way jade’s eyes lit up when she saw bella was back at rh. and now both of them are looking for each other and worried about each other. jade thinking bella is mad at her rn? please. i will sob. they are really holding off this jella reunion but i hope it’s for a good reason. i just want them to talk and have a good reunion… a hug……. happy tears, happy smiles…………..a love confession…

- Amaya

so i don’t really have much to say here but i’m just wondering about amaya this season. she’s definitely been advertised so much to the point that she essentially became like. THE main focus in season 1. this peeved some people but personally i loved amaya being like a sort of main character figure. she didn’t really take attention away from the other characters but also had that energy of being a main character anyway.

my point is, though, idk how she will play out in this season? like is she going to be as much of a main character as the main 6 are…. or will she play a bigger role? i have no clue. it seems bella is going to have a key focus this season, which makes sense, but it still just makes me wonder about amaya’s role this season

- Colin

i just hope this man does not get a development arc. i know some people want him to…. but i just. i don’t. i don’t understand. the point of him existing was to show that cheating is wrong and to display girl power. by teaching that skyler didn’t need a man to prove her worth. that she is her own person. her own strength! i really hope that colin and bella don’t have anything omfg.

- Winter Break

i’m really. REALLY excited for the winter break arc. it’s about time we get to see some backgrounds outside of rainbow high! plus the animated tidbits of ruby, sky, and violet in their wb outfits in the wb commercial was everything.

i’m so excited to see their new hairstyles, to see them with their snow gear and more. omg. of course i think the twins will be involved in this arc someone. krystal briefly mentioned the twins’ family having a ski lodge. and then of course we see sunny with her skis so like. yea!! i just wonder how these episodes would play out. or episode. but anyway like… will they just vibe? or will there be a problem of sorts? if it’s winter break then it probably won’t tie into school or like projects or anything like that

- Kia Hart

i’m actually hoping kia gets some focus this season. like. what is she going to do? is she going to pair another couple together? (if so, please be jella. okay wait seriously what if she is the key to reuniting jade and bella together… anyway) i just hope to see more of her and possibly more of her and krystal together haha. but kia just vibes so far, it would be lovely to get more of her!

- The A’s

so ainsley is finally beginning to get some attention! i really hope we continue to get more of her as well as avery, and aidan of course! we did get a bunch of content of aidan but you can never have enough honestly.

but i just wonder about how the A’s will be this season. like will they do anything significant? are bella and avery going to remain close? what is going on!!!

- The Malibu Line

so we literally know nothing about this except

but i still wonder like. if we will get to see anything about it at any point during the web series. perhaps it would be more of a summer thing. but it definitely means something if Bella is in it! (also i’m just generally excited for her new doll. omfg.)

- The Rock Line

so we also know almost nothing about this except

saw someone discuss that the music being heard during s2ep2 could be in regards to the rock battle. honestly. what if this is some sort of project? battle of bands or something? that would be cool lol. anyway i’m intrigued for this line mainly because of all the clothing leaks we have been getting omg.

- The Slumber Party Line

we have known about this for a little while (with the theory of the baby blue girl being in it) but i’m just curious as to who the characters are and if they will be in the web series at all.

- Jett Dawson

okay so. this is a big one. jett being a collector doll, i feel like she’ll definitely play a crucial role in the series. so like. who will she be to the main characters? it says she’s generally nice. why was she giving that look to the girls after their runway performance? IDK! i have no clue what to expect with her. i feel like the expectations i had for amaya (before we knew anything about her) will be put into jett because. the vibes i got from amaya ever since we just had her doll… i am also kind of getting from jett. so i’m eager!

okay okay queerness in the get down let's fuckn goooo

disclaimer: I havent watched this show in full for like 5 months at least, probably gonna get something wrong and/or forget some more important bits. also this wasnt proof read I just word vomited

tws: period typical homophobia, abuse mention, f slur use, bury your gays trope, overdose mention, mention of a creepy possible age gap (the age gap hasnt been confirmed so that's why its possible), cops

going from least to most prominent queer characters, let's start with mylene cruz!

so, from the beginning of this show she has an established romantic relationship with ezekiel (although the status of their actual relationship changes frequently throughout the show) and though this was a relationship she was hesitant to pursue, it is clear that she does have romantic feelings for him and if not for them both having growing careers in very different music genres (zeke specifically working in a genre that she repeatedly labels as bad because she thinks they're ruining records + that it isnt real music because they're using someone elses piece and rapping over it, that's not really important here tho lol) they probably wouldve had a much healthier, smooth sailing romance. that being said theres a few things that happen in the show that, while not explicitly clear, or even really good coding at that—to the point where you wont catch if you really arent looking for it (and trust me, I always look for coding, hers was just so little that it flew over my head until I saw someone else mention it)—are still cool to think about!

so, for starters, I wanna mention the toy box performance, which was performed by mylene and regina, who are best friends. that's all cool and shit, and you dont really think much about it...until you hear about the fact that the show runners purposely colored a lot of the scenes in that performance with the bi colors. like. the writers after the show ended basically said "oh yeah there was plans to make her coding more explicit, but our shit got cancelled soooo" and then dropped the fact that she was gonna be bi (or at least implies bi) in the series, which puts a new twist on a few things.

now, besides the bi coloring in the background of the toy box performance (which was mostly on scenes with her and regina, which involved a lot of uh,, lowkey lewd dancing. with each other. in very revealing outfits. wooooo), there's her music! I dont tend to read too much into this one bc, like I said before, her coding is fucking light and the writers themselves said they didnt really get to do much with it, but I think some stuff with her music is interesting. specifically how her, yolanda and regina's song set me free blew up because dizzee, resident (lowkey enby coded) bicon, got their song played in a queer club. also that the song was majorly important to dizzee and started playing literally right as he kissed a boy for the first time and realized "oh shit I like boys that's bonkers". also that the song can be taken in a gay way since literally the entire thing is about becoming your true self, fully and unapologetically, which is what both dizzee and mylene's entire character arcs are about. dizzee (and a lot of other queer people, apparently), heard this song about being set free and it resonated with them so much that they got that shit most of its popularity.

speaking of dizzee and mylene, they parallel each other a lot in the way that their arcs are about them realizing who they are, coming into themselves and no longer just letting people treat them like shit in a sense (dizzee starting to tell people essentially that they can call him weird all they want, they can make fun of how he acts, what he likes, how he dresses, etc. but he likes how he is and quite literally saying "it's okay to be an alien" as he has consistently compared himself to one throughout the show vs mylene learning that if she wants to be a disco singer she needs to put her foot down, not let anyone, not even the love of her life, not even her abusive father, stop her from achieving her dreams, etc. and continuing to pursue her career with or without their support). one more little parallel that I think is interesting is during I think s2 towards the end of the show is when dizzee and thor are shown together having fun with each other, painting all over the building and each other and are basically just being happy and in love together and then they have these clips of them being interspersed with clips of mylene at a party where she is starting to realize that if she wants to get anywhere she needs to be her own main priority and that she needs to put her career and her dream, which is what makes her the happiest, above all else if she wants to succeed. idk I just think how the show made these two into a weird parallel, accidental or not, is neat. maybe not an explicitly queer parallel, but I think at least how her music and whatnot helped dizzee, the main queer character in this show, blossom, is important.

moving on we got shaolin fantastic also known as "oh no your internalized homophobia is showing-"

so, heres a quick list of...interesting shao facts:

Consistently referred to as fag/faggot (shaolin fanfaggot is my personal favorite); he gets really defensive about this despite nobody actually thinking he's queer, it's just people being assholes to be assholes, and he is the only character consistently referred to using a slur, especially a homophobic one, especially for a "straight" character. dizzee, a canonically queer character, is called a fag less than shaolin is even though dizzee actively goes to gay clubs, has a not so secret dude he "hangs out with" and wont let anyone properly meet, paints his nails, wears less than straight clothes even by the 70s standards and is just all around the definition of fucking queer (and I mean like in the weird way, not the gay way). in fact theres only like once I can remember him being called a fag and it had nothing to do with him actually being gay it was literally just like thrown out there the same way you would call someone a bitch.

Has only shown sexual interest in women, yet refuses to have deeper relationships with women in general (possibly because of trauma but who knows) but takes his relationships with his "brothers", specifically zeke, very seriously

Tells zeke and zeke ONLY his real name when zeke was planning to stop being his friend bc shao more or less got boo boo, a like 14 year old black kid, arrested for selling hard drugs; he was clearly scared and trying to do anything to keep zeke around, literally chasing him down the street and hounding him until he got zeke to stop and argue with him

Kept threatening to beat up zeke in the end but couldn't actually bring himself to do so, instead saying that zeke is "fucking lucky" before walking away

Let's zeke get away with things that nobody else can, in general just has a weird soft spot for ezekiel that he shows with nobody else

when shao found dizzee with thor in a vaguely compromising situation (like they were just shirtless covered in paint sleeping next to each other but shao had also seen everything they painted on the walls ((which some of it was sus)), it was clear they had painted on each others bodies and dizzee had been routinely disappearing with this guy for weeks now yet not producing nearly as much art, at least, as far as we audience members know) he didnt judge him but instead, waited for him to get cleaned up and then told him something along the lines of "theres a reason why im so secretive blah blah blah [not everyone needs to know everything about me]", which, in context, kinda implies that he might be a lil. a lil homiesexual. jus a lil.

whenever even the possibility of zeke leaving him comes up he absolutely loses it. he has literally cost ezekiel life changing opportunities because he thought zeke would just up and leave him for them. this could be abandonment issues bc he's a severely traumatized character, and that probably does contribute to it, but it also is just not a reaction he has to any of their other friends just randomly dipping in and out of his life soooooo

generally speaking, this mfer has got either bisexual with a big hard on for zeke coding or homosexual with terrible internalized homophobia and still a hard on for zeke coding. either fucking way, that nigga gay. he gay as hell. gay as fuck man. there wasn't really much to analyze here tbh bc the coding is just so fucking obvious if you look for it or you are/have been a gay person who's dealt with at least a little bit of internalized homophobia.

also, just a sidenote, idk how fucking old shao, but I'm praying hes like at max 19 bc I'm pretty sure zeke is a minor in this show and shao definetly is not so the whole him being heavily implied to have a crush on ezekiel thing is kinda. oof. not oof if zeke is like 17 but any younger than that? OOF.

edit: apparently the characters are only supposed to be a year apart in age but i had no clue about that before writing this post and since shaos age was never actually stated in the show i naturally assumed he was an adult since his actor Looks Like An Adult. this is definetly on me to a certain extent, but i also never saw anything about this when trying to find our their ages so 🤷‍♀️ maybe i just didnt look deep enough, sorry!

now moving on to the main event...marcus dizzee kipling :]

so, first things first, let's talk enby coding bc him being bisexual was already confirmed!

um, to start off, I just wanna say I dont think this enby coding was intentional or even really coding, it's just moreso me being a dizzee kin on main and knowing as a transmasc enby he has very transmasc enby vibes. for example:

cool, gender neutral nickname that everyone calls him

paints nails various different colors

the whole wardrobe is just a transmasc enby heaven...fishnet shirts, jean overalls, jackets and cuffed pants galore, the big colorful pins, etc

gender neutral hairstyle (when I had my fro it was very sexy and made it easy to transition between hyper masc and vaguely fem, which is pog)

comparing himself to/representing himself consistently with an alien character (though this is meant to represent his sexuality, it could also double as a gender thing too, not neccesarily bc of the whole nonbinary alien trope but bc an enby who likes aliens might heavily identify or compare themselves to whatever their idea of an alien is, whether that just be a genderless entity or a motherfucker with fly style and no need to be perceived as anything other Wacky As Hell)

moving on from there, let's talk about how his queerness is presented to us and how, while it may be a really good piece of representation, especially coming from netflix, it still lacks in A Lot of places.

so, let's start with good things!

i personally really like the get down's queer rep with dizzee bc it's (for the most part) nonsexualized and very very soft, about dizzee figuring himself out and realizing there is a place where he fits in, and about two teenagers in the 70s falling in love over their shared passion for street art. it also features an interracial couple where both boys challenge stereotypes both about queer men and men of color, which is epic poggers and very sexy. this piece of rep specifically is very important to me bc I am a queer black person and even tho interracial relationships are mostly normalized now, I've still had people give me shit for primarily dating white people in a town that is...primarily white lol

mm anyways, I can also appreciate how in the get down, dizzee being represented by rumi the alien is not a thing specifically related to gender (as it often is) and instead is about his sexuality and just in general weirdness and how it has led to him being alienated amongst his peers, poc or otherwise. him seeing himself as an alien is not about just his queerness, which is important, it is about him being a queer black man who talks different, acts different, dresses different and is "soft"—he isnt a walking black male stereotype and he wouldnt have been seen as masculine back in the 70s by any stretch of the imagination. this can be relatable to a wide spectrum of queer poc, from queer black men currently who still have to deal with this shit or to people like myself who are afab neurodivergent mixed race enbies that have always been signaled out as weird and alienated for it. dizzee is god rep bc while he has a small part in this show, his parts are very impactful, hard hitting and show queer poc of all ages that they arent alone and that it's okay to "weird", you just need to embrace it because somebody will love you for you, as thor did for dizzee.

that being said theres um. some minor problemas here,,,

namely:

dizzee and thors first kiss

the lack of development this pairing got

the way dizzee was confirmed bisexual off screen, he never said the words himself, just showed interest in both genders

the way dizzee and thor were never even confirmed boyfriends or just fwb so most of the fandom just calls them boyfriends bc Why Not

dizzee was implied fucking DEAD??? AT THE END OF THE SERIES?????? AND THOR WAS IMPLIED ARRESTED?????????????

now, these might have been things that wouldve been fine had the show been given it's full run but it wasnt which is why we are now left with probelms.

so, from the top, let's go over these: dizzee and thor's first (and only "on screen") kiss was one that was shown in a montage of other queer people making over and doing other vaguely romantic/sexual things, one of those things being a whole ass naked titty being mouthed at, but the actual kiss...was just not shown? like they really did just say "yes they kissed <3 you know this from the context clues of it being in a montage with kissing, hickey giving and titty sucking <3 but no we will not show it <3" LIKE HELLO? I SAW A NAKED BOOBIE BUT NOT TWO MEN KISS??? HUH????????

also, dizzee and thor were both fucking high as hell during this bit like this isnt a terrible thing but it's also like sometimes you do shit when you're high that you wouldnt do sober and they just never kissed again on screen so like?? like idk that's not that bad but it does kinda irk me since they deadass got no other on screen intimacy after that unless you including painting on eacher other or sleeping next to each other on a shitty mattress but not touching at all during it bc they were both at opposite ends of the mattress like half way off it

so yeah, that was trash. then we got lack of development, which kinda goes with the "dizzee being a bisexual but he never says it in canon" thing cause like...okay dizzee was already sort of a side character from the get go like he wasnt the mc by any means, but he became way more of a background character as things continued until we basically only saw him for performances or when he was with thor, yet they got no fucking development as a pairing other than "dizzee realize he gay, he like thor, he and thor spend time together and ig probably do some gay stuff but we dont really know bc we only ever see them do graffiti together now" like?? tf am I supposed to do with that shit. answer. quickly. and then theres dizzee not being confirmed bisexual, which is just a running problem with shows literally doing everything to say a character is bi except for having the character just...say they're bi? which would be so easy? like a good way dizzee and thor couldve had some development is by thor teaching dizzee things about the queer community that he didnt even know existed, thor couldve helped him understand what being bi meant and helped him label himself and whatnot but instead we got an off screen confirmation that the writers had bisexual in mind when writing him. which is garbagé.

the whole thor and dizzee never having a confirmed relationship status is also a development problem cause like literally nobody knows if they were just friends who made out, maybe fucked, who knows, or if they were dating bc dizzee does give a love confession but a love confession doesn't mean there is a relationship, especially since thor didn't say he was in love either (as far as I remember, I could be wrong, plus whether or not that really happened or was apart of dizzee literally overdosing during a performance is unclear so 🤪)

and now for the biggest issue...bury your gays trope.

during the season 2 finale, dizzee and thor are chased by cops after they are found doing graffiti, one of the cops is able to catch thor while the other chases dizzee into a train tunnel and there is a train seen headed straight for him before the show cuts to black on a train horn. the show writers claim that if they had gotten another season, dizzee wouldve been alive but since they didnt and since that's essentially super fan trivia knowledge, most people dont fucking know that and instead had to watch a black queer teenager chose death over being fucking arrested by a white cop. on top of that, thor didnt see any of that shit because he was caught and the cop started hauling him off while dizzee was still being chased so thor literally has no clue where his friend/possible boyfriend fucking is or that he's likely dead in a goddamn tunnel all alone, unless you count the fucking pig that chased him in there who wouldve died too. this shows rep was so fucking good as far as most shows go on not having major fucking problems, on not being toxic and over sexualized, etc, etc. and then they just. killed a black queer teenager for no fucking reason. like it was literally the last episode ever, it would add nothing to the plot, it would just devastate fans and devastate it fucking did. I dont cry easy but seeing a character I identified with, who I had hyperfixated on, die because he'd rather that than be arrested is terrible. it fucking sucked.

so yeah. that's my all too extensive thoughts/analysis on the get down's queerness. theres definitely stuff I missed, or misinterpreted, or looked too much into, etc, etc., but this was a fun thing to spend time writing sooo yeah!! thanks for the ask anon, sorry this was just a big rambley info dump, but hopefully you get some enjoyment out of it since it took like 3 hours at least 😭😭 feel free to ask clarifying questions lol

this is a circular argument that will never end so idk why i even bother anymore, but it feels like you are all intentionally missing the point — its never been about feeling entitled to everyones money or earning a lot for being lazy, its about feeling entitled to earn a living wage without working yourself so hard you permanently injure your body, which every person is absolutely entitled to, even the popular artists you bitch about nonstop on here. which is why “art is a luxury and its not the artists problem if you cant afford their work” is a correct statement and not something you need to throw a fit about. if you cant afford cs, you can offbrand. if you cant afford one artist, you can commission another or draw your own art. those are fine things to do, nobody cares, its just that you dont actually need to purchase custom artwork so its ok if you arent someones target client audience. not everything is for you. your inability to afford it does not constitute an emergency on their part. i cant afford my own commission prices — i cant afford most artists prices! but these same artists also allow you to enjoy their art for free via the internet and are under no obligation to cater to your budget. we could probably charge less if we also put everything we ever made behind a paywall, if youd rather 🙄

like, i just dont think a lot of you have any clue how much is involved in this line of work when youre doing it as your sole source of income? it really is a different kettle of fish from being a hobbyist or just doing it on the side, or from working for somebody else. id love to be more affordable and accessible because i hate disappointing people and genuinely love drawing, but i need to make 2k a month JUST to pay my monthly expenses — that doesnt allow any room for savings, or emergencies, or recreational activities and fun. and i dont even have the additional burden of paying for health insurance or a car. if i cant meet those expenses, i will lose my home, which easily takes priority over someone being sad that they cant buy my art. i dont have a choice in that, i cannot force my rent to cost less than what it is, nor can i just move elsewhere. im sad to say it, because i do this job because i enjoy giving people my art, but thats just this being my job and not my hobby. so therefore i need to charge a certain amount per drawing, because drawing takes hours and requires use of my hands, and if im not careful i could hurt myself and lose my ability to do the only job my mental health allows me to do, so doing those hours of work needs to be worthwhile. how much work is too much for someone varies. and, im a person — art is also my hobby, so i want and need to earn enough to have the free time to draw for pleasure, not only for work.

and even knowing all that, i struggle to price appropriately, because there is a lot of pressure to be competitive. so getting a tip is a huge kindness. im not trying to say “woe is me, im a poor little artist, give me all your money;” this is the reality of the job, this is what we think about when we decide on our prices, they arent arbitrary numbers, and its worth pointing that out since even “artists are people who need money to live” gets an eye-roll for some reason. and these worries arent unique to artists! but im speaking as an artist. this like 4 jobs in one, and youre not just paying for the art, youre paying for my time, those 3 other jobs contained within this one, and my skill as an artisan and the years of study ive put into it to be good at it. thats what buying a luxury, and buying from an individual rather than a company, means. if you cant afford me, by all means commission someone cheaper, i wont be put out, thats how business is. and the good news for you is, people know when theyre actually charging too much for their work — the sign is when people stop buying from them. until they hit that point, clearly somebody feels its worth it, so why is it better or morally right for an artist to charge less than what people have demonstrated they want to pay? if they go too high theyll lose income and be forced to come back down all on their own, you dont have to yell at them online to accomplish that, you may simply quietly take your business elsewhere or politely let them know theyre out of your budget.

i say this to point out that these artists yall hate, you have no clue what their expenses are. i dont live in a hugely expensive part of the us! 2k/mo is a drop in the bucket for some places, and not all these people are american. if youre not their money manager, youre not really in a position to judge whether theyre charging too much and trying to pull one over on you. you do not know whether theyre charging enough to barely scrape by each month or enough to be swimming in cash. what looks “low-effort” to you may not actually be, and your personal taste in design/art style is subjective; just because you wouldnt pay xyz amount for it doesnt mean the artist is bad for charging that amount. if its too much, it wont sell. how would you know whether people are really spitting out lazy art, are you in their houses watching them work? have you seen them grow their entire careers? if you dont like their art and think its too expensive, its your prerogative not to buy it, by all means. you can complain if you want. my point is that its up to each artist to set their prices, based on factors you as an internet stranger cannot possibly know — and if they have a brand name that can help them have a steadier stream of income and more income, then good. why is it weird to want people to thrive? you dont have to be part of that, but that doesnt make them lazy or greedy or selfish. theyve simply found the balance of pricing that works for them, and thatll be different for everyone because we all have different audiences and different pools of clients. and in saying that im not defending artists like, say, densy whove behaved suspiciously or taken peoples money and delivered a really clearly substandard product (or no product at all), or even the concept of cs in general which i find ridiculous, there is absolutely room for criticism of bad business practices and greed; im talking about artists who mind their own business and sell their shit who just so happen to charge high prices for that shit. the cool thing about it is that you have the absolute freedom to choose to patronize a less expensive business if you like! but the mere fact of something being out of your price range doesnt make it selfish or predatory, and a lot of you act like it does. you assume, knowing nothing, that prices are devised with ill intent to milk you out of your hard-earned dosh and go complain about it as if thats a fact, instead of just saying “not for me” and moving on with your life, which to me just seems totally absurd and a waste of your time. idk if you guys know this but we cant actually reach into your pocket via the internet and take out your money — if you dont like something, you can make the adult choice not to buy it.

not one person has been saying “if you dont commission artists youre a monster” or “fuck you if youre poor,” the point is, you can buy art from whoever you want for whatever price and are under no obligation to tip or spend more than you can afford, but its worth understanding that freelance art is a really precarious business to be in and rife with jerks who think they know more about the time and effort that goes into creating than the artist does because they want to be cheap and think art is worth nothing, so there are a lot of factors in place that might keep an artist from being able or willing to charge enough money to be sustainable. youre not walking into a fucking wal-mart to buy something that got spit out of an assembly line, it costs more than $10. (and even there, the people who work on that assembly line are assuredly being grossly underpaid. but if $10 is what you can afford, then it is what it is, nobody is forcing you to pay $50 for it from a small business. but that doesnt make it wrong or a judgment of you to suggest that those people deserve better pay, and if you *could* afford the more expensive one but choose to reward a company that exploits its workers because its convenient for you, people are allowed to judge that. this isnt a perfect analogy, but.) therefore, *if you can afford it,* tipping is strongly encouraged if someone is underselling. its literally just a common courtesy, a thank-you, and yall are behaving like youre being dragged kicking and screaming to jail because someone said it makes you an asshole to use “i have a spending problem and addiction to buying art of my oc uwu teehee” to brag about intentionally seeking out cheap artists and participating in that cycle like youre running a life hack page on tiktok, instead of trying to do something positive about it and change your self-admitted bad spending habits by saving your money to commission those artists less frequently but be able to make their day with a nice tip, or not tipping and just not feeling the need to share that you really love buying cheap art. do what you want! nobody is forcing you to spend outside your means! just know that youre not protected from people saying something makes you look like kind of a jerk 🤷 you are most welcome to do it anyway, but if you then go chatting about it in public, people are probably going to have opinions about it. if you cant handle that idk why youre posting about your life on a vent blog specifically geared towards people being mean.
