Recently extinct species make me sad for all the usual and normal reasons (loss of life, biodiversity and unique life forms that experienced the world wholly uniquely and acted in it like no other, to name three), but a big thing that also makes me so sad is the forgetting that comes right after. Many endangered species are greatly ignored to begin with whilst alive of course, which is awful, but the way that extinction also causes us to forget. A species could’ve been so abundant a hundred years ago, people would’ve used a fish species or a tasty plant for food, or parents would’ve warned their children to not put a poisonous toadstool or insect in their mouth, a diver would exclaim, “Aha!” after emerging from the shallows holding an especially big bivalve, or someone making a species diary would sketch out a local bird or fasten a single flower to the page. But.. then the species goes extinct. It doesn’t exist anymore. None of these events, these actions happen anymore. Not with these species. The people who had these experiences dwindle out and they may not even realise that their experiences were among the last of their kind. And we forget.

It’s how Charlie wanted to start a new family and life with Babe and how Way wanted to force Babe back to his old family and life.
It’s how Charlie was willing to die for Babe and how Way wasn’t willing to cut ties with the man who hurt Babe the most.
It’s how Way asked for the necklace and threw it away when Babe couldn’t give him the love he wanted.
It’s how Babe gave Charlie the gloves and Babe held on to them tighter after Charlie died.
It’s how Charlie offered Babe freedom while Way offered Babe a cage.
It’s how Charlie took Babe’s Sense and knew it hurt Babe and apologized and offered his life because he loved Babe that much.
It’s how Way hurt Babe and didn’t even say sorry for the trust and the friendship that he broke.
It’s why Charlie is Babe’s boy and why Way is left behind to be forgotten.
Babe will hold onto any scrap of Charlie he has left. He will watch the accident again and again because feeling the pain means the love was real. Babe will always hold onto that freedom and that family and that hope that Charlie offered him and he will find his way back from the pain. He is Babe after all. Charlie believed in him so he can believe in Charlie.

Tenderness
***
All day you’d felt worn out. The moment you woke up you felt heavy, like a weight was placed on your chest. You were tired and your heart ached for reasons you couldn’t quite place. The dark storm clouds that loomed in the Hawkins sky the entire afternoon, swollen with rain, reflected your blue mood.
And so you lazed around the trailer all day, not doing much else besides staring out the window and watching thick rain drops assault the asphalt, the sparse grass out front overflowing with muddy water by late afternoon.
Though it was spring and the sun had begun to set later in the evening, its welcome glow was absent today—hidden behind stubborn stone grey clouds—as the clock's hands aligned vertically on the 12 and the six. Despite this, a little peak of brightness enters the space as the front door to the trailer creaks open. Eddie.
You watch silently from the couch with your chin resting in your palm as he sheds his jacket to reveal his frizzy, damp curls beneath his hood. He shakes them out, almost like a dog, before his eyes land on you and instinctually, a warm smile graces his lips. Just like that, the clouds open up and sunlight bursts into the room. The weight on your chest—though still present—feels lighter as Eddie moves deeper into the space.
“Hey,” he greets warmly. And for some reason, the sound of his voice makes your lip wobble.
Eddie’s smile falters slightly then, but before he can ask you what’s wrong or move toward you, you stand from the couch, finding you know exactly what you need; deep in your heart you know this will cure your ills.
When you reach him, you still don’t speak a single word, but pull your arms around his middle and lay your head against his warm chest. He smells of fresh rain and underneath that, something distinctly Eddie; a lovely familiar scent.
Beneath the soft cotton of his shirt, you can hear the steady, sure beat of his heart. Eddie doesn’t hesitate to put his arms around you then. Still doesn’t ask why. Just accepts this is what you need. Trusts that you will tell him everything if there is anything to tell.
You both stay there just like that for quite some time; not talking, just holding each other. A sweet silhouette of everything tender and kind. It’s warm and simple and everything you could ever need. Slowly, the weight lifts from your chest completely. Like his simple embrace has made you miraculously sprout wings and soar.
Nothing beyond this exists. It is just this. Just you. Just him. Just this all-consuming warmth which makes you feel entirely whole.

Watched Society of the Snow with my (Spanish) best friend today.
I liked it. Kinda wish I could have watched it knowing nothing about the story but yeah, no chance. Whispering trivia to my friend and seeing what they chose to cut was interesting too.
I liked how Uruguayan the characters were. They say bo and ta, and the first thing they dream of eating is chivito. Payan to pass the time... That and an irrational hate towards Ethan Hawke was what made me like this movie more tbh
My 2 favourite things were probably the heavy Catholic imagery (I haven't been Catholic since I was 10 and was forced to go to mass in order to take my communion but. It's definitely a big part of the story) and the casting choice for Nando Parrado. A+ on that one even if the actor is Argentinian jaja
