Hi there!

Its been, a longgg time since ive been on tumblr and ive started anew! However I wanted to talk about something that has became like extremely important for me these past few months.

And I know most are gonna be like 'ah damn its gonna be something political' But its not.

Its about the character of Izzy Hands from what is my favourite show Our Flag Means Death. I was going to write this somewhere more private, like my notes app. Eventually decided against that when I realised I just felt the need to talk about it to someone else.

So without further adieu, here is why the character of Izzy Hands is so damn important to me as a trans guy and a gay guy.

To start off, I want to talk about the fact that, Izzy is one of the first characters within media I have been able to relate too and understand on a level I didn't even realise possible. I hold that same loyalty this character has, that same instinct to follow along with those you know and not to question them, even if those people aren't objectively *good* so to say.

Because just like this damn angry little man, I do the same, I follow those who arent objectively good, even if it results in more pain and suffering than good. Ive followed people who have actively called me an animal before due to my sexuality and gender - Just like how Edward has called Izzy a dog in the past, albeit for different reasons. Ive known what its like to question my loyalty to those people but ultimately stay because in some way ive loved them.

Izzy Hands has genuinely been the first character I ever felt truly connected too in this form of sense. And dont even get me started on how he was in the aftermath of losing his leg.

I'm someone who has been losing both my hearing and my sight at *alarming* rates. Like to the point im having to have optician appointments every couple of months to make sure my prescription isn't changing more than it is already. Its got to the point where my glasses arent actually helping me with some aspects and im needing to slowly begin trying to adjust to using a white cane so that way i can try stay safe within public areas. Dont even get me started on my hearing loss.

Ill never forget how I felt when I saw Izzy's reaction to himself within his depressed state after losing his leg; (the whole "what even are you?" scene), having to take about 20 minutes to just sit and cry. Because I felt that so fully after having to experience my own depression to my own circumstances.

He's a character that from start to end I found being able to see myself in.

And by loving him it's like loving the part of myself I didn't think that I could love.

This character is one that i'm going to hold so damn dearly to my heart because I don't think Im ever going to be able to find one that ill be able to actively relate too on so many damn levels.

A random headcanon: i am really split on weather he barely eats or if he's like, a lowkey foodie. Idk why.

General Opinion over said character: For me I do view him as someone HURT by his loneliness, though in the show, if I recall right, he seems quite content? With his existance. Or says he is, and how he's drawn to it.

I will say- I partially mirror some of my own experiences of loneliness onto him. I was so afraid of opening up to people at one point that I convinced myself that I WANTED to be all alone. I used to want to move into a little cottage in the woods and cut off all contact to people. But it was a self destructive coping mechanism. At points a survival mechanism. Maybe canonically Peter Lukas is a reliable narrator?

I recall him talking about the warm glow coming from the windows of houses though, and the loneliness it made him feel- if i'm attributing this right. And i have a really hard time contributing that to anything but YEARNING. And reveling in yearning. I also have experience w that. Yearning is a DELIGHTFUL feeling.

So yeah I think I do find a lot of comfort in the version of Plukas I have in my head.

Honestly he's burrowed a little nest into my head abd become something beyond a little blorbo from my shows.

Like i have thought about marrying him as a performance art piece. But i dont think rustied featherpen would like that.

i also see him as not only having hypersensitive vision but also having elevated senses period. hearing, smell, touch, etc. probably the main reason he sits in the dark with no other noise.

hasnt spoken to gabriel in years. he cant bring himself to reach out and when gabriel does he just doesnt have the energy to try and respond. he has no idea how to, especially now.

this is very specific but he stims a lot with his claws. like extend and retract over and over absentmindedly (mainly because thats what i'd do if i had claws imagine how fun that would be)

he usually bottles up all the emotions that he has, including anger. kind of explains why he lost it in the chase scene in my head because he reached a boiling point. he hates talking to people about his problems.

empanadas are his safe food, also theyre just easy to eat when your mouth is a little funky (i would know i have some fucked up braces theyre great for that 10/10), its mostly just easier on his fangs.

definitely horrible at the whole self are thing. he just forgets, all the time. would forget to breathe if it wasnt involuntary

if you say anything he doesnt particularly like (eg "hey bro are you okay do you wanna talk") he'll just stare at you with his rat eyes like 👁️👁️ until you stopped idk what im saying.

he is a bit touch starved, depending on his mood he'll let people touch him in a friendly (emphasis on friendly. friendly friendly friendly dont take it any other way :/) way.

OH I almost forgot about this one: he hisses. some spiders hiss. so does he. vampire furry energy

he also gets pissed when people call him a vampire so uh... im counting my days oops.

people tend to compare SandRay and BostonNick as they have the same situation when first all:

- Nick and Boston had a friends with benefits situation where Boston put at the first some “boundaries” but then he completely ignored them; Nick, because of Boston behaviour and obvious attraction, fall for Boston. (oh, and lets not forget how they met because…the photo? the hookup in the back of the store?)

- Sand and Ray had a strange power dynamic at first and then it changed as some kind of friends (plus their sleeping together so like kinda friends with benefits) meanwhile Sand became more and more attached to Ray with the progress of his feelings.

The most important things is between the two couple is: Sand has always been vocal about what Ray did was wrong or what he didn’t like meanwhile Nick didn’t much do anything because of Boston mixing signal (and manipulation)

They started all their relationships on a hookup in the back of the store after the selfie Nick took on Ton’s phone for letting him know that he was there and ready for it. They tried to set boundaries and they literally didn’t even followed them. Of course, after some time (literally none) Nick fell for Boston; and obviously he wanted more than a just mere fwb situation.

Nick literally thinks he’s gonna be with Boston and he even accepted the fact Boston slept with Top. He is “okay” with it and its even “okay” for him be abandoned by Boston for some random shit.

like?? the party?? Where Boston literally told Nick to go back home by himself? Only because he wants to fuck Top??

And lets be honest who sane in his mind would actually be okay with their own crush or situationship whatever fucking around especially having something with someone who his crush has a past with it

To be honest im not saying that Nick doesn’t have his own faults because the recording? the most disturbing thing ever. I’m not condoning revenge porn. But at first you can see that Nick is trying to be just fwb with Boston, no feeling etc but Ton always used some kind word and gesture that made Nick fell for him; thinking he was even special (maybe he is/was we still dont actually know but tbh i dont think so).

one of the examples that i can say is the photo they took together when they “meet” Drake’s character (who i dont even remember the name sorry not sorry) when at first Ton doesnt want to have any proof of him be with Nick in any kind of way because of his father.

or every time Boston told Nick how special he was and how maybe “one day” they would be something more just for letting Nick be calm in this kind of relationship-ish they have.

And we even know that Boston cant take a no as an answer (like the scene in the shower with Top? horrible). He knows what he wants, who he wants and doesn’t care anything if it’s not something for him. He knows his own value and how easy he can have someone else because thats what he does. Even if does mean to destroy your own friendship (for some dick)

oh and Boston doesnt like losing what he thinks its his own like Top (as we talk about his hookups) or his comfortable zone (his group of friends).

Meanwhile Ray and Sand are polar opposite of BostonNick because the relationship between Ray and Sand started as a “job” where Sand was literally paid for driving Ray at home and just spending some time with him because Ray felt alone and miserable with himself.

Yes, at the end they slept together (plus the little thing they did in the car before Mew called) but they started their friendship after that where you see both of them talking about their family, trauma and why Saund doesnt like Top. oh, lets not forget the fact Saund literally took Ray to see his mom (technically not really but they do meet and spoke a little bit).

examples: Sand talking to Ray after the car thing saying how he felt and didnt like the feeling of being left by Ray in that kind of situation (which im with Ray because if my friends call me drunk in needing of help ill drop anything for them)

the talking about Sand’s nonexistent dad and Ray’s mom/ relationship he has with his father after his mother’s death

Ray’s alcoholism’s and how he would literally die if he doesn’t stop of doing his own sabotage.

or the time where Sand literally screamed at Ray because he doesn’t want the money anymore because he genuinely care about him now

literally the part where Ray is drunk and driving the car and Sand is following and the all scene in the hospital.

you can see in the hospital scene is concern but he actually act like a friend because he has feelings but he is truly trying to protect himself from it and trying of be there for Ray after the shitty night they had.

oh and the fact: Sand KNOWS about Ray’s crush on Mew. Of course, its not like Ray told him first (thanks Boston) but they spoke about it.

certainly Sand and Nick both fell in love but Boston is not emotionally available because he doesn’t want to be in a relationship and having a something with someone who is so much easy to get; meanwhile Ray cant just flip his feelings for Mew but you can see he sees Sand in another kind of way. He values Sand and try new things with him or just be around Sand environment instead of be alone or be drunk.

Both Nick and Sand receive different way of be treated both in acting and speaking with their own crushes; because at the end they are two completely different dynamics of relationships and way of thinking and communicating things or just coping with it.

6. which ship fans are the most annoying?

4. Where do you find inspiration for new ideas?

i tend to get the most inspiration for new ideas late at night. my thoughts wander a lot when im trying to fall asleep- especially if im listening to music at the same time. sometimes a certain lyric or theme will get stuck in my head and that will lead me to thinking of something i wanna see in a story, or sometimes ill just be thinking abt cute little scenes/dialoauge for something im already planning, and that leads me don a rabbit hole of whats ifs until im thinking about an entirely new idea! and of course i get a lot of inspiration from other books/movies, especially when it comes to au's or ideas outside of what i normally write

i need all of my characters to experience at least One (1) traumatic, heartbreaking, or otherwise extremely painful event per story or else i start experiencing withdrawals. i genuinely dont know if i have ever written something just purely fluffy without even the hint of angst yk? like. my fluffiest fic is What's In a Name and EVEN THEN it ends with the implication of everyone's past trauma sooo. yeah. i NEED my little guys to suffer i consider my most successful writing sessions to be the ones where i make myself cry :]

i hate berlermo.

okay, HEAR ME OUT FIRST!! do i hate the ship? yes. absolutely. does that stop me thinking about them every second of the day? no. i am in so much pain help me.

want to start with talking about berlin. he is a straight man. martín was NOT his bisexual awakening or something. he. is. a. straight. man. they could not work and berlin made that very clear on multiple occassions. he is also an egomaniac. he has so many disorders, and while i dont want to portray him as some heartless monster (because he isn't!! he cares about himself but that doesn't mean he doesnt care about others too!), i find it hard to believe he didn't keep palermo around to mess with him.

the kiss scene between andrés and martín is the root of a large majority of martíns issues. we see throughout the series that palermo is withdraw from his emotions and love, he has attatchment issues, and he has not moved on from berlin even two years later. he hasnt let himself recover from his death, and his loss of a hopeless, unobtainable love. when berlin kissed him, they both knew that would be the last they saw of eachother. they both knew berlin was willing to let himself die (both because of his illness and his love for his brother) during the heist. it left palermo with false hope, that maybe something could have come from it. but there never could have! that is their last interaction, and that is the last thought he leaves with martín. i wholly believe berlin was fully aware what that would do to him, and left with that as a little "you won't be forgetting me :)" because everything with berlin is Him Him Him. without the kiss, martín would have been able to heal so much quicker and easier.

palermo doesn't start to heal until two years later, when he gets involved in the bank heist. up until that point he blames sergio for the "love of his life"s death, but slowly comes to realise that this group of people that berlin died for are the most caring people. he begins to understand it. they are hurt, they have losed loved ones too, they are risking everything for a loved one. they are so much like him. does he make mistakes? YES! so does everyone in the group, but it is in his nature to stir trouble when he doesn't get his way. did his actions have awful consequences because of that? unfortunately, yes! but he regrets them. he is forgiven, even by those he probably shouldn't be forgiven by!

by the end martín is so much more in touch with his emotions, he realises that he doesnt have to settle for unobtainable love, and he can be loved unconditionally. he went into the bank heist for berlin, but came out of it with so much more. palermo would not have been in the place he was in by the end of it if andrés was still around.

money heist was so refreshing to watch as a queer person. queer relationships were not perfect. i understand the appeal of berlermo, i really do, but they are so unhealthy. i understand the need to cling onto any sort of gay rep because its so scarse in mainstream media, but there is so many queer stories in this show, and none of them are appreciated as much as berlermo, which i find kinda weird!! why is a relationship with a gay man and a straight man more adored than helsinki and palermo? two gay men who helped eachother through SO MUCH! what about the beautiful platonic soulmate relationship between helsinki and nairobi? what about the amazing transwoman, who was such a genuine representation of some trans struggles? please stop prioritising the cishet in queer stories. berlin is so important to so many characters, especially martín, but him as a love interest to martín shouldn't be the main focus in his story, because his whole arc was getting over him and moving on. in reality, he made martín the most unhappiest he had ever been.

hiii bestie! its been a hot minute. hope you're well. 💗

okay okay let me explain cuz it would seem that i haven't adequately communicated what i was trying to do with the final chapter hahaha. i wrote like 3 different ends to this fic before i settled on this one. I just didn't feel right building up to a whole bunch of nothing. it struck me as kinda anti-climactic. and i always hate when people act like marriage is the end of romance. like being in love with just the process of getting to the destination of getting married. cuz being married is supposed to be the start of a whole new type of relationship!

after the honeymoon phase is over and you must deal with the fact that you're together forever, you start to settle into a much different life. which comes with its own challenges. suddenly maybe she notices that she hates the way that he forgets to close any cabinet doors around the house. He finds she runs too hot in her sleep. he doesn't understand why the coffee table needs a thing of potpourri that he'd rather just get rid of so he could put his legs up or set his laptop on the table. like...and hes still matty so hes still dramatic and she's still an over thinker. they'll fight again. there will be trouble again. he'll probs be depressed again cuz mentally ill people dont just magically get better. but that doesn't mean the end for them! a lot of the last chapter was repetition of scenes ive written before actually cuz everything is a cycle. deciding to get better isn't enough to change the course of your life. that shit takes so much time and work and repeating the same mistakes. but they find their way back every time.

okay i think i have genuinely made it worse so...yeah.

1. kamen rider w (wbk, my forever beloved, i dont think this will stop being my favorite soon. the fucking detective show. DUB E X crime and the city. fucking found family. hidari shotaro MY GUY. so much insanity just look at my header on here. phillip :')))) i have so many feelings and im forcing myself to stop here. ryu voice Dont Ask Me Questions.)

2. kamen rider ex aid (my first rider and yknow you dont forget your first rider. the gamer doctors are my beloved. the suits are so cool (taddle legacy!!!) kiriya is here AND HANAYA TAIGA. WHY IS HE LIKE THIS. taihii the most insane ship dynamic ever. POPPY MY BELOVED <33333 the character songs are So Good. i like real game and the taddle legacy theme a normal amount. EXCITE EXCITE ALL I GOTTA DO IS LIVE ON)

3. kamen rider ghost (big part of this is takeru which ill get to later. but goood theres so much good in this show. warera omou yue ni warera ari!!!! its literally so fun. and the messages are so good!!! life is beautiful and i never want to die. makoala and takekari marriages happened and nothing else is canon. THE BELT NOISE THE BELT NOISES. mugen ghost is my fav final form ever. that one henshin scene from the summer movie kills me. keep going go go go go go go gotta ghost!!!!!)

4. everything else ive watched so ooo and revice (ooo: i need to rewatch this one actually bc it made me feel so much but then i watched w next so yeah. ANKHEIJI LEGENDARY GAY OF ALL TIME. i love all the characters so so so fucking much but especially eiji this fucking guy. the greeed my beloved... the insert songs!!! so many times you can find me singing SONO SHUNKAN NOMIKOMARERU DAAKU SAIDO NO KIKEN NA YOUKUBO. so yeah you count the medals one two and three anything goes life goes on coming up ooo :')) (revice: free theraphy show fr fr. like just good vibes all around. loved this one so much. there is tragedy but we prevail. the music is fucking amazing i have listened to mirage mirror 73 times within a single month of discovering it. the suits!!! daiji and ikki and sakura the siblings ever. hana makes me emotional and also hanasaku oh my god heated drama between women. deep drop danger kamen rider demons INSANE belt noises in general. THE THEMES IN THIS SHOW YES I WILL LOVE MYSELF.)

1. shotaro/kamen rider w & kamen rider joker (the fucking guy ever. god. i like him so much its a little distressing. hes my best friend. i want to dress like him sort of unironically. i am feverishly waiting for my joker memory to arrive. HIS BACKSTORY MAKES ME SO SAD. LIKE I CAN EMPATHISE. SO MUCH. and his dynamic with phillip akiko ryu i :'))) the found family ever. yeah. i often rewatch w ep49 just for the joker scenes. i have his birthday as per my headcanon in my calendar. i am not normal)

2. taiga/kamen rider snipe (so. hes my type of character so fucking much. broken sad lonely fucker of a guy. i want to kill i also want to hug him and i want to make him kiss hiiro. saving people to save yourself,,,,, yeah. NICO TAIGA THE SIBLINGS EVER. babang bang bang babang bang shooting uh. his fucking emo fringe neon suit. the dog tags he wears for no reason. THE SNIPE PREQUELLLLL im gonna stop here before it derails but oh my fucking lord)

3. takeru/kamen rider ghost (YEAH SO. tied for my fav main rider with eiji. takeru is incredibly important to me if he werent the same age as my brother id call him son but alas. i want a hug from him i think it would fix me. his fucking journey as a character..... he makes me sad but like happy sad. like i appreciate life more when im sad about him. his scenes in the pacman movie literally kill me. you always gotta keep going chasing after life its the only way you can live. go go go ghost [i start crying uncontrollably])

4. daiji/kamen rider live (bonded with this guy 6 episodes into revice its insane. this character is insane. i need to hug him. his fucking character song is therapy for me. KAGERO YOU FUCKING EMO EBOY. daijis vcinema is so good and i felt so much. i love the evililtylive suit despite the stupid name. i just love daiji in general and i dont ever think about how his actor is the same age as me <3)

5. eiji/kamen rider ooo (MY GUY MY GUY MY GUUUUUUY. i need to give him a hug. hes been through so much. but he still. he still is Like this. like what the fuck genuinely. the scene from ep30 is in my head constantly. tied for my fav main rider with takeru bc god does eiji make me feel things. but this is so fucking long already if you need to hear me cry about him send me an ask bc. ohmygod. HINO FUCKING EIJI. i dont Ever think about him in zi-o. and ooo 10th is not real)
