008. Kindness

The next letter comes a week later on a Tuesday. The one after that, two weeks and two days. And the one after that, just four days later.

You’ve made a habit of writing at nearly every post office and leaving it to be picked up by Vash if he chooses. He tries to resist and leave the letters there, but loneliness and the want to know how you’re doing always wins. He’s returned to a town more than once just to get a letter.

This week’s letter comes from a little town called Bangs. The mailwoman hands him the letter from the top of her tomas, and he gives her the twenty-six C-cents for handling it.

The paper inside is pink this time and smells a bit like almond lotion. Your curving and slanted writing greets him:

Birdie,

I’ve managed to add three new towns this week to the roster. There’re only a few people in each who are willing to join in on the book exchange, but a win’s a win. HQ says I’m doing great, and they’ve already gotten a few applications from some teenagers in the towns to apply for college in the bigger cities.

In fact, they’re moving me to a new route soon. One that’s a bit more challenging due to it being so far out and away from most other places. I’m getting my own tomas for it since the towns are so spread out. I’ve drawn the map they sent me on the back…in case you ever want to visit.

I hope you’re doing well. I wish I could see you. I know you’re getting my letters. Write to me, please. Even if you don’t think we should travel together anymore, we can at least be friends, right?

P.S. What do evil toma lay? Deviled eggs.

He’s surprised to find two blank pages nestled into the envelope. You really want him to write you? After abandoning and dodging you for nearly two months? But he shouldn’t be surprised. You’re always adjusting to his boundaries, always making sure he’s comfortable, even if you disagree. You’re too kind for your own good. The least he could do is tell you he’s okay.

So, he writes back.

I’m doing fine. I’ve got a few jobs lined up in the town I’m in right now. I was able to help nurse someone’s grandma back to health here too. I’m doing my best, just like you are.

He taps at the paper. What else should he say?

I’m sorry I I’m glad to hear you’re doing well. You’re making a huge difference by helping build up people’s education. It will help so many people in the future.

What do you know about the region you’re getting assigned to? I’ve only been around there a few times, and I’m sure it’s changed since then.

P.S. Why can’t you ever trust stairs? They’re always up to something.

He’s left with an extra page to write with, but just stuffs it in his pocket. He doesn’t have much of worth to say right now; he still feels bad about…everything. He finds the postwoman again, who takes the new envelope and trots off on her tomas, and that’s that.

The next letter comes on the road as a courier passes by on her own walk back toward a town called Ferret’s Claw. She hails him, and hands it to him. “Already paid for,” her gravelly voice says, then continues trotting down the path of dunes.

Vash watches her leave before he opens and scans it over.

Birdie,

I’ve heard about you helping the Plants in the region. You’re not as sneaky as you used to be. That, or people are a lot more talkative about the talented, young, handsome man going around fixing Plants.

Sure sounds like you.

I’ve had to deal with some bandits on the road. Been chased a few times. Luckily they either aren’t great shots or don’t have their own toma to chase me on. They seem to be young kids with nothing better to do. I hope the more we spread education, that will lessen.

Be careful around here, birdie.

A blush rises to his cheeks when he reads over the “talented, young, handsome” line again. Leave it to you to still get his stomach fluttering with butterflies, even at a distance. Vash lets a breath go through his nose, then folds the letter, putting it in his “letters pocket,” so dubbed now after receiving them. He brings out the spare piece of paper from the previous letter and begins to write, using his knee as a ‘desk.’

Mayfl______,

Don’t worry about me; I know how to run handle bandits. You should be more careful, though. Do you still have that knife you got from the pawn shop?

I won’t be staying in the region long. There’s a call coming from somewhere else, and I need to go to it.

He taps the paper, looking up and around as he thinks. Should he tell you where he’ll be? He’d like more letters…

It’s coming from a town in the east, I know that much. Hopefully I can get there in time.

P.S. There are three types of people in the world: those who can count, and those who can’t.

There. That ought to be enough.

And when he’s in the east, he isn’t as surprised to find a letter waiting for him at one of the towns.

I’ll keep writing to you if that’s alright. It gets lonely on the road, and I don’t doubt you feel it too. I love getting your letters.

HQ says I’ll stay in this region for at least a few months. Please let me know where to send my letters; I promise I won’t follow – I’ve got too many people relying on me and the books now. But I’d still love to hear from you. Tell me about what you’re up to, any adventures, even the shoot-outs you’re in. I’ll worry, but I’ll know you’re okay with each letter.

I hope you’re well. I hope you find happiness wherever you go.

P.S. What do you call a can opener that doesn’t work? A can’t opener.

And Vash does write back. Even if it’s so much less than what you write, he keeps you updated.

Vash wonders, when he’s writing his next letter, if this should stop. He’s leading you on; he hasn’t stopped contact like he promised he would. He looks down at the paper and crumples it in his hand, then opens and smooths it out again. Your kindness is like a drug he can’t quit. It’s selfish, but he wants to keep you, like the letters he keeps in his pocket. Is it so bad to want one friend in the world?

Maybe. Perhaps not.

And so he writes.

"Okay byee guys" You give your friends a hug

"is chifuyu walking you home?" one of your friend's asked you

You look at your phone and you see a message from your boyfriend, chifuyu saying that he got called for an emergency Toma meeting and that he wouldn't be able to walk you home today.

you sighed, putting your phone away, "Nah It's just myself for today". your friend frowned and the other scoffed. "Seriously?! Its the 3rd time this week"

"Its okay! he always walks me home" You give them a small smile, "Its just that he's been busy lately"

your friend rolled her eyes and the looked at her watch, "Oh shit we have to go" She grabs your other friend's arm, "We'll see you tomorrow y/n!"

"bye!" you say as your 2 friends walk away

You turn around and you start making your way to the black gate. While you're walking you start thinking about chifuyu. You haven't seen him since friday of last week and its wednesday. He's either at a meeting or he's hanging out with Takemichi. Usually you wouldn't have a problem with him going to his Toma meetings or hanging out with his friends but you haven't seen him for 6 days.

As soon as you step foot off of school grounds someone grabbed your shoulder.

"what the-" You turned around

"you need to read this letter but you can't show anyone!" The person tells you in a deep voice

"Who-" He cuts you off, "This is a top secret letter and you need to read it when you get home. again. DON'T. SHOW. ANYONE." He gives you the letter and then he walks into a van

You stand there confused and scared. Who can this man be and why was he giving me a letter you thought. You look at the letter for a second. The letter was in a eggshell white envelope and in the front had your name in cursive.

You put the letter away and you start walking home.

Once you enter your house you put all your stuff away and then you head to your room. you close your door and you sit down on your bed while holding the letter.

"should I wait till I see Chifuyu..?" You mumbled to yourself

"DON'T. SHOW. ANYONE"

those words kept replaying over and over. You take a deep breath in and you open the envelope. You take out the paper that was in there and you unfold it.

Dear Y/n,

You are the most beautiful girl I ever saw. The moment that I saw you, I just knew that you were the one. You are so smart and Talented I love you so so much. You mean the whole world to me and you deserve everything. I would do anything to make you happy. If you are free tonight if you are free :)

You put the letter down and you felt your face heat up. You pull out your phone and texted him.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Smoke Screen chapter 10: Mission Complete

The next day, the Earthrealm warriors get ready to leave for home. The Special Forces and the ninjas all gathered for their final goodbyes, and the kahn and her sister walked forward, thanking the Earthrealm warriors once again.

Kitana: And as for you, Robin, what do you say? Will you stay here, or leave to join these warriors?

the caped crusader gave some thought, but then he looked over at Smoke, who nodded his head as if to say yes, and he finally made his decision.

Robin: actually, I think I might leave, your majesty, 'cause, I've sort of always wanted to see what lies beyond this Realm. I know I have duties here, but I'm leaving that behind me... For now at least, but I will send you messages when I can. I've met a lot of people in my life, but I may have found my real friends right here.

Kitana and Mileena looked at Robin, scoffing, but happy that their close friend made the right choice.

Kitana: Very well, you may go with them, but do send us messages once a week.

Robin: I'll try, your highness. Thank you. Now, shall we go, everyone? I can't wait to get to Earthrealm, see all the things I've missed out on.

Hanzo Hasashi used his amulet to open the portal to the Special Forces Headquarters.

Smoke: (to Robin) You made the right choice, Robin. Trust me. You'll love it.

The caped crusader smiled, and nodded his head. As they all walked through the portal, the image cuts to the inside of the S.F. HQ, where Sonya and Johnny waited for them.

Johnny: Yo, Cass, good job! We were worried, but we had faith. Nice job. And uh... Who's the new guy?

Kabal: (reffering to Robin) He's just a friend.

Sonya: Tremor.

Tremor: General.

Sonya: Can someone explain why this Black Dragon scumbag is here?

Robin: Hey, Rocky Road's a good guy now. Don't worry, I got some dirt on him that I can share. I got a feeling you're gonna like this.

Sonya: I'll be the judge of that. You guys need a ride home, or are you good?

Sub Zero: It is alright, we can make it back safely.

Cassie: Oh come on! At least stay for the party!

The other ninjas and Tremor looked at eachother and shrugged. Smoke was the only one to say yes. As the image fades out, we see Kano in the cell with a note book and a pencil, drawing something, as he is very good at it. He looks over to see his cell is right next to Hsu Hao's (hey, remember that guy? I do).

Kano: What did I do to deserve this.

Hsu Hao: You know, I can hear you.

Kano: I hope you can hear me.

The image fades away into the Outside of the HQ, close to midnight, with fireworks flying through the air and music playing in the background. Johnny and Sonya are dancing together, while Cassie is introducing Robin and Tremor to her team, the Kombat Kids. Kabal and Stryker are cracking jokes, and the other ninjas are drinking. Jax is talking to Kenshi and Sub Zero, and Hanzo Hasashi is watching over everything.

Tremor and Robin, somehow, still feels unwelcome. He makes a rock chair to sit on it alone for a bit. Smoke, ever observant, notices this and walks up to them.

Smoke: What's wrong, Robin? Are you alright? You're not having fun?

Robin: (looks at him) I am, I'm just not used to any of this, is all.

Tremor: And I just... I guess I don't feel welcome. I'm sorry, its just, I'm not the easiest person to talk to. I was never taught how to be friendly, and its kinda hard for me. Sorry. Maybe its a good idea if I leave.

Robin: Nonsense. Everyone needs a little help every now and then. If ya want, we could teach you how to fit in. Ya know, if you'd like. (Looks at Smoke) Would you?

Tomas: (looks at Robin and nods) Of course. But first, let's enjoy the party. Tomorrow we can get started. Sound good, Tremor?

Tremor: Yeah, yeah, sounds good.

Robin: (to Tremor) can I trust you with something, big fella?

Tremor: Yes.

Smoke: Great. I'll be over at the food section if you need me.

Robin: (leans in to whisper) you wanna know a secret? I'm not so sure about these people, myself. I'm not one for crowds. You wanna know why I came along? Its because I was hoping I could find a place I can belong. A family, since mine is lost to me. So, I'm gonna tell you this: I can understand how you're feeling. And we all need a friend or two.

Tremor: (in disbelief) Really?

Robin: Yeah, really. Trust me. I got plenty of dirt on these guys.

Tremor: Well, we have plenty of time to get to know eachother, and we can start tomorrow.

Robin: Agreed. (sticks out his hand) Partners?

Tremor: Sure. Why not? (shakes his hand)

And the image fades to next morning.

The next morning, everyone says their final goodbyes. Kabal gives everyone a quick high five, Robin and Tremor join the Special Forces and Smoke and Sub Zero head home to the Lin Kuei Temple.

Robin: (narrating) Well, that's basically it. The ninja dudes head back home, and Tremor and I go on a few duo missions, but occasionally with the Kombat Kids. After that, they give me the offer of a lifetime: a spot in their team. And, I don't know, they made it clear they really want me on their squad. So, I took it, and now, I'm a member of the Kombat Kids. We've been a team for three months, and they're a great team to be on. I've met many interesting people, and made some good friends. Tremor also got a fresh start, as the Special Forces erased any and all of his records of being in the Black Dragon, and now he's a S.F. Super solider. He and I sometimes take road trips to revisit our Lin Kuei buddies. I don't know what's gonna happen next, but one thing is certain: whatever the future brings, I'll be ready for it. I've lived a long life, and there's no better way to end it, than fighting alongside my best friends.

i think it’s LAME that none of the other magipa have human designs so i did it myself. also spiced up hughie’s fit n myamu’s new fit from episode 39

(notes + close ups under cut!)

going from left to right: first up hughie

his normal civilian outfits are… weirdly tame? at least if you compare it to the fabric drape hell of his magical realm outfit, so! since he and myamu are supposed to be color palette parallels (+ toma and matsuri) i gave him yellow in his eyes to match myamu’s pink also because i’m not sure why??? his eye color changed between forms.

his palette Is mostly blue and white (to look nice next to toma’s warmer reds and blacks) so he’s got some Very dramatic white pants. wanted his jacket to be the statement piece to everything else is relatively reserved. the chain is supposed to match his necklace, and the bucket hat that inspired the look is from his disguise when matsuri and myamu snuck into omega hq

2nd is myamu!

this is just her outfit from episode 39 cranked up a little since i though the gray hoodie and plain skirt were a little boring. she’s got a heart/lace up pattern on her sleeves and a cute belt. also changed the type of hoodie she has and the hoodie strings

third here is hanitan <3

i Think her and miruki’s aesthetic is decora kei with a hint of lolita and angel aesthetics, so i went with a comfy pajama look since hanitan’s sleepy. she’s the only one to have her animal aspect Obviously in her design since teddy bears and bows are cute and decorated headbands are Super cute. the heart cheek mark is for my own amusement though. draculara moment or whatever.

her hairstyle is two pigtails pulled up front, which is a very warm way to wear your hair. the stitch detailing and patches on her hoodie are in reference to her teddy bear form. she’s got bear gloves to match miruki’s main outfit too. the ugg boots are something hanitan wears just to annoy miruki since they’re a little out of fashion.

fourth to batter: chimumu!

i hate green. teal is a little better but jesus christ this palette was a little bit of a nightmare. anyways, i don’t know what cool sportswear looks like so i was winging it. the most obvious thing is the star motifs, her gloves, hair, short fluff, and sneaker lips are all shaped to look star-like.

the white under-part of chimumu’s hair was added later since i remembered after i was done coloring patano that the magipa usually have multicolored hair so. extra cool points. the scarf and the star pattern on it being exaggerated was to help convey how overconfident chimumu is in both herself and hina, and the sporty look of the outfit was also to enable chimumu to keep up with hina’s training. the yellows also got a bit more lime. the warm yellow was clashing.

fifth in line is carron!

i think she should be tall like the boys. that’s all.

anyways, i think she’s probably the most straightforward translation? like her hair got extended into a ponytail and her stained-glass bunny ears got turned into tailcoats and that’s really about it. she looks basically the same as her animal form otherwise, i even kept the leg shape pretty similar since i didn’t differentiate between her pants and shoes. oh! her pants have a diamond pattern running down the side, to really hammer home both the stained glass and diamond theme.

otherwise i’d say she’s just a cute butler!

the grand finale: patano!

you might not believe me but her fit’s 100% the simplest next to myamu’s. which is why her’s was boring until i Spiced it Up with some patterns (the roses + stripes)

i’m pretty sure her design is supposed to evoke a little german boy in the swiss alps yodeling or whatever so i went with that while also keeping in mind the Loud ruffles of amane’s takarazuka revue aesthetic. so, a boyish outfit with a feminine charm. if i have the energy though i would like to take another stab at patano’s design since i didn’t incorporate her wings, which i think are Very cute. also the wiki is insane i think she’s supposed to look as clumsy as a hippo but she’s clearly a pegasus/horse?? she has a hair tail and hooves and pointy ears, the big snout doesn’t make her automatically a cartoon hippo.

tipo As Branquelas é normal ter a cada 5 minutos piadinhas!! Já em filmes, series, Livros e HQs que contém Drama,Humor Negro,Ação e até mesmo terror o humor tende ser um pouco mais maneirado! Em

uma narrativa do Gênero Comédia Romântica com Garotas Mágicas (no meu caso) Cada gênero tem que ter uma Dose de Humor

adequada!!

As piadinhas,cenas engraçadas e envolventes são muito comuns!! Até em cenas mais tensas uma piada ou uma cena que te faz rachar de rir é bem vinda por que como eu disse o gênero é Comédia! Se for algo mais pesado deve se avaliar bem a cena para não se tornar algo meio desrespeitoso e sem noção! Uma história que aborda temas sensíveis não deve ter piadinhas aleatórias!! Somente se for algo para descontrair os personagens e o Leitor!

Por exemplo bringa entre irmãos! Melhor exemplo Thor e Loki (Nos quadrinhos Atuais e no MCU!!) Ao invés de ser uma briga com

palavras ofensivas ou luta corporal pode se tornar algo cômico e leve!! Que geralmente

os xingamentos são coisas sem sentindo como aquela cena de as branquelas ou várias estreladas pelo Adam Sandler oh nas HQs

bem Atuais!! Isso cria um conflito só que engraçado!!

Sabe aquele momento que deveria ser algo trágico,tenso ou até mesmo triste??? É muito

com piadas,suas atitudes ou até mesmo um incidente engraçado no meio da tragédia!!

Breakfast at the investigators’ HQ!

Daniel: “No, hear me out! You know Abbie, the Penhaligans’ maid, yes? Well, Rozen Nancarrow said about her that Blaise “did the same to her that he did to me”, and that’s easy to decipher: seduce and give a baby. Only Abbie never had hers, to avoid the scandal, and for that alone I want to resurrect Blaise to kill again him myself!

Anyway, Abbies’ parents are very considerate of proper decorum. No matter how angry they were at Blaise, they’d never speak up against him or leave his service.”

Ruan: That last bit sure sounds biographic...

Daniel: “But what if there were no Blaise Penhaligan anymore, hm? Abbie’s father, the butler, is a drinker. I think he killed Blaise when he was drunk!”

Ruan: “Maybe, maybe not. You cannot just pick a suspect and then pile evidence on them, Daniel! You have rule out everyone as the perpetrator, until only one is left and then check that one’s alibi!”

Carrow: “Sounds like the same to me, honestly.”

Ruan: “Wait, Sire, are YOU on the team now, too?”

Carrow: “Nah. Although I did make some questionable life-choices yesterday, going detective wasn’t among them.”

Daniel: “So you DID talk to a ghost?”

Carrow: “A distant ancestor, yes. Or maybe it was all in my mind, just taking the shape of Mawgan.”

Note: Carrow’s fingerprints are all over the rental. Daniel already has compared them to the ones on the dagger, so the investigators know that Carrow wasn’t the killer.

Abbie/Tomas being the killer(s) was my pet theory after I had first suspected a sim named Alan (who didn’t make it into the story), but couldn’t find evidence against him. Also Daniel errs. Abbie’s baby is alive and in the ‘hood.

Lançado em 2019, escrito por Kevin Panetta e ilustrado por Savanna Ganucheau, ‘Bloom: O verão em que o amor cresceu’ promete aquecer o coração dos leitores trazendo uma HQ de romance LGBTQIA+. Kevin é um escritor de quadrinhos conhecido pela co-criação da série Zodiac Starforce e Savanna é uma quadrinista e ilustradora que começou na área publicando e vendendo seu trabalho em lojas de quadrinhos de sua cidade natal, Bloom é a primeira graphic novel dos dois.

Aqui conhecemos Ari, um jovem que terminou o ensino médio e deseja se mudar para a cidade grande com sua banda, mas para que isso aconteça ele precisa convencer seus pais para que eles o deixem largar seu emprego na padaria da família. Ari amava ficar lá quando era criança, mas agora não consegue mais se ver trabalhando ali, procurando resolver essas questões, ele vai em busca de alguém para ocupar seu cargo, e é quando ele conhece Hector, um cara que ama cozinhar e que é a chance perfeita de Ari para deixar a padaria. À medida que Ari vai ensinando a Hector sobre o lugar e sobre as receitas da família, os dois começam a passar mais tempo juntos e algo parece surgir disso, seria esse o início de um romance de verão?

Por se tratar de uma HQ, o recurso visual ajuda a compreender melhor o cenário que o autor quer apresentar, desde o princípio fica muito claro onde a história quer chegar. Depois que você toma gosto pelo enredo (o que não é difícil) se torna quase impossível não terminar tudo de uma vez, e por se tratar de uma história em quadrinhos a leitura é fluida e pode ser feita em poucas horas. A HQ se passa através do ponto de vista de Ari e todos os acontecimentos são narrados se apoiando nos sentimentos e percepções dele. Em diversos momentos somos surpreendidos por suas reações e atitudes e assim passamos a entender o porquê dele agir de determinada forma conforme as situações problema se desenrolam.

Ari é o retrato de um jovem confuso e que não sabe lidar muito bem com suas emoções, mas sejamos honestos, quem de nós também não é assim? Porém, tudo tem limite. Ari e Hector são muito diferentes, mas ainda assim conseguem ter uma conexão, mas não sei se isso é o suficiente para nos fazer torcer pelo casal. Não é difícil entender como Hector conquistou o coração ranzinza de Ari, eu mesma me senti cativada por ele ao longo de toda a história, sem dúvidas meu personagem favorito do começo ao fim, já não posso dizer o mesmo de Ari, que em diversos momentos se mostra egoísta, insensível e ouso dizer até mesmo tóxico em suas relações.

Bloom é uma história simples porém cativante e encantadora que nos deixa maravilhados do começo ao fim. Em diversos momentos me peguei parada em páginas aleatórias apenas apreciando a beleza das imagens e dos momentos da história. Mas apesar de todos os elogios, preciso ressaltar que o amadorismo dos autores fica evidente aqui, vários pontos da história que poderiam ter um peso maior acabam não sendo explorados, enquanto outros pontos que não são tão relevantes acabam se demorando mais do que o necessário. Em diversos momentos me surpreendi (de forma negativa) pela forma como os eventos se desdobravam, meio com pressa meio sem saber direito como desenvolver aquele ocorrido e a sensação que eu tive e de que algumas coisas ficaram apenas jogadas no meio da história. Isso não me fez desgostar da HQ, de forma alguma, mas é um ponto de atenção para os leitores mais exigentes.

Outro fator que pode ser levado em consideração como talvez um ponto negativo é o fato de que não foi possível desenvolver de forma profunda todos os personagens que aparecem ao longo da narrativa, claro, precisamos lembrar que se trata de uma história curta e de volume único e na minha concepção todos os personagens que aparecem são devidamente explorados para os propósitos da narrativa, em diversos momentos apenas com suas expressões conseguimos obter mais informações sobre eles e acaba que em nenhum momento a falta de progressão dos personagens secundários é algo que incomoda ou dificulta o pleno entendimento da história.

Agora um dos pontos mais fortes da HQ é a imersão que ela traz consigo, contamos aqui com uma playlist feita por Hector para Ari, playlist essa que pode ser facilmente encontrada no spotify e que ajuda a dar o tom da história, além disso, temos também a receita do ‘Famoso Pãozinho Fermentado da Família Kyrkos’, cenas do processo de produção de arte e páginas-teste da história. A edição dá um show no que se propõe a disponibilizar como conteúdo extra.

Aos que dizem ser uma cópia de Heartstopper da autora Alice Oseman, lamento informar que Bloom foi lançado antes (foram só uns 10 dias antes, mas ainda assim acredito que é importante ressaltar esse fato). Apesar dos pontos negativos, eu com certeza recomendo a história, é um romance fofo e cativante, chegamos ao final com a sensação de que o Ari é uma pessoa melhor e de que o Hector é o namorado dos sonhos de qualquer um. Embora meus talentos não incluam a culinária, me senti tentada a fazer a receita que o livro apresenta, quem sabe no futuro...
