as fun as it is to study characters under a microscope and figure out every little thing that’s wrong with them and why, i appreciate media where characters are like 30% self-aware at best and getting to that point costs them EVERYTHING.
#i have said this many times but there are a lot of characters who i suspect would be destroyed by complete self-awareness#they couldn’t live with it#some of them can’t even live with 30% self-awareness#i think that this is especially true for characters who struggle to acknowledge and reconcile their dual roles as perpetrator and victim#which is a line we all walk to some degree - so it’s a relatable source of inner conflict#we’ve all (intentionally or not) been hurt and we’ve all (intentionally or not) hurt others#and what do we DO with that??#how do we cope with that????#hopefully we do better than most of these characters - but we can still empathize with them on some level#i mean. being self-aware as ME is painful… some of these people… i can’t imagine it#so the avoidance of it as a means of (usually unconscious) self-preservation is both understandable and tragic#because very often it kills them but you also have to ask: would being self-aware have killed them anyway?#so many times people are like ‘ugh! if this character had only realized [x] then this all could have been avoided!’#and i’m like. Could It Have Though?#not to quote Black Sails but…#Perhaps The Trouble Was Going To Happen Anyway

friendly reminder that plurality is caused by trauma. trauma is defined as an event that has a severe negative impact on oneself. there are going to be dark parts of plurality that no one wants to talk about. the brain created you to cope with what it went through. it's okay to have parts (or wholes) that have “twisted” desires, attractions, innerworld or external relationships, sexual or emotional needs, etc. other people might call you disgusting, evil, immoral, but it's just part of being traumatized. it's going to be unpleasant or unsightly.

#byler#ignore the logistics of it#mike’s brain thinks of Nov 6th as the day Will went missing aka the day his life stopped#he met El after a whole day of worrying about will#its the day they had to see etched on will’s tombstone#Nov 7th is just an extension of him finding out and doing everything to get him back#nov 7th evening is a whole 24 hrs later#so yes not the same day#but it doesn’t make it any less incriminating#it’s not that Mike didn’t exist until he found el#it’s that it stopped that day#and then started again when he got hope will was alive#so many lines in mike’s monologue felt like lies mixed with a dose of truth#friends don’t lie co-founder and his loopholes 🙄#I think it’s interesting also that we never really get Mike and Will talking about his time in the UD#the one time they do it’s brief and mostly about uncovering what’s happening to Will in that moment in s2#but like we never see them talk outright about what happened or how the party all coped#so the prospects of him finding out how Mike truly felt back then…#in a scene where mike explains the ‘i feel like my life started-‘ line to Will#(and even more importantly the audience who has to buy into this)#that could be quite something…
