Hi I love your account can you please write dreamies revealing their relationship with a non idol reader
when they reveal your relationship
Idol!nct dream x non-idol!reader
a/n - I really struggled on this for some reason so I’m sorry for the longer wait
Tumblr media
mark
you two were just trying to enjoy an evening at a bar for a friends birthday. the back of the bar was booked out meaning no fans were going to even be allowed in. it wasn’t fans that were the problem, but rather it was one of the staffs who recognised mark as an idol.
a photo of the two of you hugging each other and another one of mark kissing your cheek was revealed to the public and immediately the response was strong.
people you knew were recognising you and contacting you, EVERYONE was freaking out.
mark didn’t know at first until you called him, panicking as you explained what happened. he left his schedule as quick as he could and went home to you, calling the company to set a meeting to see where to go from here. he is rather mature about the situation and oddly calm, mainly because he knew this kind of thing was bound to happen one day.
doesn’t mean he isn’t panicking though.
renjun
he was the one who saw the post revealing photos of you two shopping together. in fact he saw the post before it even reached the general public. he was quick to get staff and his members to try and get the post taken down but it grew more popular by the minutes and eventually it was making headlines.
he called you and talked to you through what had happened. he was trying to be calm because this wasn’t the end of the world but damn did it feel like that as he read through the public’s opinion.
he did see a few positive comments but the negative outweighed them, so he deletes his social media apps of his phone, only posting photos on Instagram every now and then before deleting again. goes inactive until everything has calmed down for his own mental health and his suggest you do the same - even if it takes months.
jeno
you two were talking in the background of a behind the scenes video uploaded to the youtube channel. the editors thought you were a staff member, they didn’t even notice you and jeno hugging in the background that was only shown for a split second.
the clip was instantly being spread around and the youtube video was re-edited but it didn’t stop the original from being shown.
when he saw it he was a little shocked since he didn’t even notice that there was any type of camera in the room at that moment, which was why he was comfortably talking to you in the middle of the room.
you contacted him minutes later after he first saw it, crying in a moment of worry for what this all meant for you both.
he will reassure you but he will also be just as worried and be telling you to be careful if you go out anywhere JUST IN CASE.
haechan
on a live one of the fans asked what time it was there and he showed the fans his phone, not realising he hadn’t turned notifications off. you sent a message at that exact moment saying, “love, I’ll be home soon.” he moved the phone away quickly but he knew he was done for. he laughed it off awkwardly at first before apologising and ending the live.
he called you as soon as the live was over. “BABE I JUST REVEALED YOUR TEXT OH MY GOD”
you’re both freaking out but once you’re home he tries to calm down and think maturely about this. “look… they can’t ALL hate me? I’ll still be able to make music…” He is thinking positively and refusing to pick his phone up because he knows if he goes online he will only think negatively.
jaemin
you were somewhat a youtuber, and in one of your vlogs, in the background as you walked with the camera through your house there was a picture of you and jaemin.
people managed to recognise it immediately and you were shocked because you didn’t even notice it when you were editing. you contact jaemin, worrying what he would say. you speak so fast into the phone that he didn’t even get to say anything until you were done speaking.
“love… it’s okay we can sort this out.” “I am so sorry jaemin.” “it’s okay, I’ll contact the company then I’ll call you right back, okay?”
you both ended up just coming out about the situation and admitting your dating. you take a break from your socials.
the only positive to this situation is that he gets to see you more since he doesn’t have to hide anything anymore. you can go to his place and he can go to yours!
chenle
there was two instances where he accidentally revealed it and he didn’t even realise that fans would connect these two instances. the first thing was when he accidentally followed your account on instagram. he went on bubble not long after he made it seem light hearted, “oh I accidentally followed an account while going through reels.”
the second time was when a fan asked to be daegals mother and he instantly said, “she already has a mother. WHICH is me I’m the mother and father. I’m the only one she needs.” he panicked as he spoke and tried to play it off.
fans put the two times together and looked more into it, figuring out that you two HAD to be dating. the one and only time the crazy fans were right.
he is panicking when he realises fans were figuring it out and instantly gets in contact with both you and the company. you’re a bit more calm over the phone about this than he is but when you see him in person you’re also freaking out.
jisung
you two were seen together out in public. it was really late at night when the two of you were going for a walk to a local shop near your place to get some late night food.
fans approached jisung, leaving you both shocked since he was disguised pretty well in your opinion.
the fans kept pestering you both so you two ran away- literally.
it made headlines the next day, and you laughed at the photos of you running away with jisung. your laughter was really just covering for how nervous and worried you were though. He on the other hand was texting everyone he trusted and getting all sorts of different advice.
he is really worried about what this meant for his future and he might consider a hiatus to avoid having to face the fans for a bit if the response is really negative.

not that i truly care what rando losers on tumblr dot com think about me but i did just get an obnoxious as fuck message telling me about how internet activism and sharing things online isn't actually activism, trying to shame me into not posting as much or "torturing myself" by watching and sharing pictures and videos of what's going on in gaza. and it pissed me off enough to say this:
One, Palestinians have asked people to share and boost their content. That is a direct fucking ask from people in Gaza and Palestinians around the world. I will keep watching and sharing these photos and videos because it is what we have been asked to do by the people who are themselves experiencing genocide. Yes, it is depressing, yes it emotionally and mentally fucks me up. 100%. But i will keep doing it.
Two, literally none of you have ANY fucking idea what i am doing in real life to fight for Palestinian liberation. I don't need anyone on tumblr dot com's validation or approval and i'm certainly not stupid enough to dox myself online when every zionist shitbag, the police, and every employer out there is already trying to do that. but believe me when i say i have dropped pretty much everything else in my life to fight as hard as i fucking can to stop this genocide and work towards the Palestinian liberation.
Three, everyone needs to be doing shit in real life to fight to end the genocides going on right now. Only posting online does not count as activism, true. So take your conversations offline as well. Talk to people you know about Palestine, Sudan, and Congo. Read books and learn the histories. Write to and/or call your elected officials and government leaders and even the fucking bureaucrats. Join local solidarity and action groups working towards Palestinian liberation: Dissenters; DSA; JVP; SJP; AMP; IfNotNow are all US based groups that have local state chapters (idk too many groups outside of the US, sorry international friends). Participate in BDS, personally boycotting brands yourself, demanding your schools, workplaces, organizations, institutions, and governments divest from Israel. Attend rallies and protests and disruptions and vigils. Write to your local, state, and larger newspapers and demand they cover this genocide without bias, call them out for their shitty zionist reporting; write op-eds and letters to the editors. Sign up for webinars. If you can't leave the house or attend in-person events, you can make signs and banners for people and groups who can go. Start or join a campaign to pass a ceasefire resolution in your town/city; testify at town/city council or public comment about it & write to your local elected leaders. Donate to Palestinian and and relief orgs and charities if you can. And yeah, keep fucking sharing and uplifting and boosting Palestinian posts and voices online. The media is trying to repress the fuck out of them, so you we need to do our part to make sure their voices are seen and heard as widely and as loudly as possible.
And four, don't be a pretentious dick to strangers on the internet. You don't know shit about what people are doing in their real lives. This is just common fucking courtesy

Forgotten Snows
pairing: cate dunlap x fem! reader
tw: mentions of andre, running away, swearing, kissing... that's literally it probably wow
description: cate decides to run away from her supe life, only to find a welcoming new home and maybe something more?
a/n: this low-key feels very rom-com-like lol. also sry for not getting to requests, this idea got stuck in my head and would not leaveee so i obv had to write it. hope you enjoy and lmk ur thoughts <3 ALSO WE NEED MORE CATE FICS PLS
Tumblr media
Cate quickly readjusted her gloves and blew a few strands of blonde hair out of her face. The strong ocean wind beat relentlessly against her exposed cheeks and she cuddled closer into her thick white knit sweater. The cold of the metal railing bit into her arms, making Cate smile. She actually did it. She finally left.
After exposing The Woods and God U for what it was, Cate had made the executive decision to run away. She had caused so much hurt even when all she ever wanted to do was help people. The only person she told was Jordan. Her best friend who had clearly understood what she needed to do. Cate didn’t even tell Andre, fearing that he would somehow convince her to stay.
She didn’t know if she even loved him all that much anymore. Sure, she will always hold him dear to her heart but after everything… So she had scrounged up all the money she had been saving up, somehow coming up with a substantial amount to allow her to buy a little house in a remote island of Canada. It was located near the waterfront (only a 20 minute walk!) and overall the population of the island was about 200 people. Perfect.
Cate had even managed to find a job. Granted it didn’t pay as much as she would have been paid if she became a career supe but it would let her live comfortably for as long as she wanted. The job consisted of being a book editor for a random little online publishing house, which meant she could work remotely and totally online.
The remainder of her money was spent purchasing charter plane and ship tickets as well as a new, much warmer, wardrobe. She was basically moving into the Arctic Circle, which meant that her usual cardigans and shirts weren’t going to cut it.
Tumblr media
Snow crunched under her sturdy boots as Cate hauled up her heavy suitcase along the gravel paths. A few hours ago she had finally arrived in the port of the island that she would now call home. Somehow she had been able to catch a car that was making its way in the general direction of her new house. Unfortunately for her, that same car dropped her off quite a few kilometers from her destination, but she couldn’t blame the elderly couple who looked like they were eager to finally get home.
Her supe stamina was the only thing that seemed to sustain her as she traveled the paths, constantly looking down at the map she had downloaded into her photos. Cate knew that her Google Maps probably would not work at all until she got closer to her new house. She didn’t expect there to be any signal on this island, except near specific houses or the three tiny towns.
The sun was starting to set by the time she had arrived at the path leading directly to her door. The lights inside the house were off but the porch light was on and smoke was coming out from the chimney. Furrowing her eyebrows, Cate turned to look at the house that sat a few paces away from her own and was surprised to see that a woman, about her age, was shoveling snow.
The woman had her headphones in but the gentle hum of her voice echoed through the expanse. She must be her new neighbor.
Cate smiled slightly before starting up her trek again. Finally seeing her destination had given the tired blonde a boost of energy. The clear path leading to her porch allowed Cate to pull her suitcase up more easily and after depositing it next to the door, she turned to look at the woman. Gravel poked into the soles of her boots as Cate made her way to her. Picking up a gloved hand she lightly tapped the woman’s right shoulder.
Tumblr media
Soft folk music echoed through your old headphones. Shoveling snow was monotonous but necessary work. Especially with the newest addition to the island coming today. Cate Dunlap. Unfortunately estate agents weren’t really a thing on an island that sat in the midst of the Arctic Circle. So you had been the one to list everything online and figure a way to sift through all possible applications, which ended up being pretty scarce.
The second home, which your parents used to use as a guest house/office, had been listed for almost a year now. The only three applications you had gotten were from people who either seemed like escaped convicts or generally creepy men. Something that would not do if you were going to be living a few seconds away from them. But then a month ago a saving grace of an application arrived in your email.
Cate Dunlap, 21, single and was willing to move in as soon as possible. The letter that was attached as well as the recommendation made the decision for you. So here you were, after prepping everything inside the house - making sure it was warm enough and stocked up for the week, waiting for Cate to arrive.
What you didn’t seem to realize was that your old headphones were still pretty soundproof. The feeling of a hand against your thick work coat made a loud shriek come out of your mouth before you swiveled around, clutching your chest with one hand and pulling your headphones down with the other.
“Oh shit! I’m so sorry. I thought you-” Oh my God. Cate Dunlap was stunning. Her blonde hair was tucked under a black beanie and a white fisherman’s sweater peaked out from under her thick sage green coat.
“No, no I should be the one apologizing. I was literally expecting you, we just don’t get a bunch of people around here like… ever.”
“You were the one who did all this?” Cate asked as she gestured towards the house.
“Yup, I also stocked up food for like the next week or so.” Her mouth dropped in an incredulous expression.
“You really did not have to do that.”
“Of course I did! I sold you the house plus you deserve a warm-ish welcome to our wonderful little island.” You both let out a small chuckle and Cate continues to brilliantly smile at you.
“Wait, you were the seller? I didn’t realize that you would-”
“Also be living here? Yeah. Your new house was actually part of my family’s property since we built these two places. I’m just living here alone now, and I really don’t need all that space. So…”
“Woah, that’s so cool. It’s nice to actually have a local to help though, I haven’t lived in a place like this well ever.”
“I’ll be here if you ever need anything, and by anything I mean anything. Here, why don’t we get your stuff inside and I can get some tea ready?” You asked as you started to put your shovel away.
“Oh God yes, that sounds incredible right now.”
You pulled out a series of keys from your jacket pocket and swiftly got Cate’s house key out from the bunch. After giving the door a few firm pushes it flew open and the warm air started whooshing out.
“Here quickly, we don’t want the house to get cold.” You both laughed and Cate pushed her suitcase through the threshold. You pushed the door closed behind her and turned towards the blonde who was spinning around and marvelling at the surroundings.
Tumblr media
Cate was completely taken aback by the house, she didn’t expect it to be so home-like already. Movie posters lined the entry of the house, stuff she had actually watched. The floor was hard-wood, which looked insanely expensive. Pulling her suitcase behind her, Cate took peeks at the different rooms that filled the house.
There was a living room which was covered in books, a desk and had stunning paintings covering the remaining walls, this was also where the fireplace was set. A bathroom with a full bath and shower, completely covered in what looked like hand painted tiles. The kitchen was similarly decorated but this time with bright blue tiles and had full appliances plus a huge pantry. Finally there was a bedroom at the end of the house, it was simple and much less decorated but looked cosy. The bed was covered in a variety of furs and there was an antique closet and vanity set. A space heater was also placed on one side of the room.
“So what do you think?” Came a questioning call from the threshold of the bedroom, spinning around she was met with the slightly nervous expression of her neighbor, even if her eyes shined with kindness.
“Oh my God it’s fucking incredible. Did you decorate it all by yourself? I didn’t even realize- wait, I’m so sorry. This was so rude of me but I never asked your name.”
“I’m Y/N L/N, at your service.” Y/N said as she gave Cate a mock bow, making both of them laugh. “And yup I had some extra time after my parents died and well renovating was a great distraction.” You added in a slightly more somber tone, with a wistful look in your eyes.
“Oh shit, I’m so sorry.” Cate started to say as a sad look appeared in her eyes.
“No, don't be sorry. I- they both had cancer, which fucking sucks but I continue to do their work. I miss them you know? They didn’t deserve to leave the world so soon.”
“My parents are both absolute assholes but I understand where you’re coming from. My uh boyfriend… also died, he killed himself”
“Shit, that fucking sucks. I’m so sorry. Ok well let’s get some joy back in here. This is turning into a deeply angsty moment when we should be celebrating you coming here… so why don’t go unpack and I’ll get some tea on.”
“You really don’t have to do that.”
“I want to. Now shoo before I make you.” Cate shuddered slightly in pleasure as Y/N turned around and made her way to the kitchen. God, she thought you were absolutely drop dead gorgeous. How the hell was she going to be able to function with you looking like that?
Tumblr media
The next few weeks were spent in pure bliss for you and Cate. You spent nights at each other’s houses, binging movies on respective laptops or just curling up on the couch reading books. Life had slowed down a bit more for you than Cate job-wise because summer season was coming to an end. That meant shorter days, less tourists and much colder nights.
“So you never actually told me what you do?” Cate had asked one night as you were tucked under the array of furs on your bed as wind and snow howled outside the window.
“Oh I’m a conservationist mostly but I also work at the National Park, giving tours and making sure the habitats of the animals are undisturbed. Other than that I also write a bit.”
“Ooo what do you write, I could get you a deal with my company.” Cate said as she twirled around in the bed to look at you as you threw your head back and a ringing laugh filled the room.
“I don’t think so. My stuff is absolute shit. It’s mostly short stories.”
“Oh come on, it’s not.” Cate said as she softly smacked your shoulder. “And you have to show me one of your short stories sometime.”
“No way.”
“Yes way.”
“No way.” That little playful argument was concluded when Cate pounced on you and started tickling you.
Tumblr media
The first time that your relationship was tested (and very much strengthened) was on a random Tuesday. You had somehow managed to rope Cate into helping you with fixing up your little snowmobile. You sighed loudly and threw down the tools before moving your oil covered hands to smooth over your face, which was definitely a mistake. Now instead of just being frustrated you were also covered in engine oil.
“Shit, that looks…” You sent Cate a glare which had her raising her arms in defeat but still letting a small snicker out of her mouth. “Sorry! What exactly do you need help with?”
“There’s a damn bolt I can’t reach, I swear I need to get some kind of stand for this thing-” You cut yourself off as you watched Cate easily pick up the vehicle and turn to look at you. That was when she realized what she had just done.
“Okay, okay, so before you freak out-”
“How the fuck did you do that? Wait, are you one of those superheroes?” You asked quickly, it felt like the words were just flying right out of your mouth.
“I- uh fuck, yeah I am. Look, if you want to stop being my friend I’m totally fine with that. I’ll even move out-” Cate started to stutter out, panic encased her features making your face soften.
“Woah, woah, woah. Catey I think you’re fucking great. Who cares if you have a little extra something that most normal people don’t. Actually I think it’s pretty fucking cool okay? Don’t you dare leave.” You exclaimed with a passionate tone in your voice as you stepped closer and closer to Cate. You grabbed her hands and looked deeply into her eyes.
“I- I don’t want to leave either.”
“You bet your ass you don’t.” Cate let out a snort and smiled brightly at you. There was something in her eyes that made you take the next move. A move that you had been wanting to make ever since you first saw her.
Carefully moving your face towards hers, you watched to see if Cate was going to pull away, but she didn’t. No, instead she surged forward and grabbed your face with her soft gloves, kissing the very soul out of you.
It didn’t feel exactly like fireworks, it was so much better. It felt almost like experiencing the Northern Lights. An array of beautiful colors and sensations flew behind your closed eyes. It also felt like all your nights cuddled up in bed, sharing a hot chocolate that would sear your tongues with each sip. Cate felt like home.
Tumblr media
whooo that was fun to write. i love her sm - anyways hope you all enjoyed it !!! if there are any inaccuracies, i literally tried to do a bunch of random research but i probably missed some stuff sry so just lmk.

I just finished reading “THE CRAMPS: STAY SICK, TURN BLUE”, a brilliant new book on one of the sickest bands to crawl out of the rock ’n’ roll gutter and I got to say this exceeded any expectations I had. It focuses on the band’s history but through contributions by musicians, fanzine editors, collectors, record shop owners, dj’s, publishers, writers and various other esteemed figures of the Greek underground & rock scene, it also addresses those particular aspects that made the Cramps excel in a league of their own: their obsessions with obscure ‘50s rock 'n' roll, b-movies and sexual innuendos, a vast world of underground kicks and little-known thrills.
Above all, this book is a treasure trove for those who are fascinated with the Cramps’ trash-chic aesthetic, since it’s chock-full of flyers and posters from the shows they performed in Greece during the ‘90s, as well as lots of rare-to-never-seen-before photos from those gigs by Dimitris Milonas, Nikos Kerkinos, Pavlos Fysakis, Dimitris Kantouris, Pavlos Papadopoulos, Yiannis Andreou and the Music Kitchen archive, an asset that overrides any language barrier for the non-Greek readers of a book written in Greek and published by the independent Athenian publishing house of Εκδόσεις στο Περιθώριο.
Anyone who doesn’t live in Greece but is interested in purchasing the book, can order it online from https://scarecrow.gr/shop/product/the-cramps-stay-sick-turn-blue-book/

I’ve never played Tomodatchi life and I haven’t seen a playthrough that shows what happens after marriage so. How do the babies work. Do you make a whole new mii?
So, i'm about to explain way more than i need to. enjoy?
So when two miis are married, eventually one of them might get a love bubble. When you talk to them, they'll say that they and their spouse are thinking of having a baby. You can tell them they should or they shouldn't.
If you tell them they should, three days later you'll get a phone call. You'll then be transported to the couple's house, where the two kf them will be standing and one of them will holding a baby who's facing away from you. They'll announce that they had a baby and ask you if you're hoping they had a boy or a girl. You can reply with "Boy," "Girl," or "Either is great!" Replying with boy or girl will always cause the baby to be a boy or a girl, while saying either will have the game choose randomly.
When the parent says "It's a boy!" or "It's a girl!" The baby will turn around and their face will be revealed. It will be randomly generated based on their parents' faces. The parents will say, "How do they look?" To which you can say "So cute!" or "Hmm..."
If you say "So cute!" They'll move on to the next question. If you say "Hmm..." it will take you to the mii editor, where you can change their face and hair as you please. If you leave their appearance as is, it will change slightly as the child grows, and their hair will grow. If you change their appearance, it will stay exactly that way until they're an adult.
After that, the parents will tell you they were thinking of naming the baby... some random name from the game's list of baby names. You can tell them that's a good name which will take you to the next question, tell them to pick something else which will cause them to suggest another random name, or say "Hmm..." which will let you input a name yourself.
After choosing a name, the parents ask you what kind of personality you think they'll have. You can say "Just like mom," "Just like dad," "Who knows?" Or "Hmm..." You can probably guess what those options do.
After that is the end of the Birth. Over the next few days, you can watch the baby grow from infant to toddler to kid. When they're an infant or toddler, the parents will occasionally call you, asking you to help them get the baby to stop crying. If you agree to help them you can play a kind of tedious minigame. There's also a little minigame for the kid stage, but the parents won't call to ask you to do it.
After a few days (I don't remember how many, i think it's like 4 or 5 but it might be more,) You'll get a phone call and be transported to the house again, where the parents will announce that the baby is all grown up. You can choose to either have the baby move into their own apartment, making them a normal islander, or to travel the world, making them a traveler who goes to other people's islands through streetpass, and can never become islanders. Travelers are supposed to be able to occasionally come home to visit via spotpass, but i don't think that feature works anymore now that the 3DS online servers have been shut down.
Regardless of what you choose, you can choose to make any edits to the child's appearance, profile, voice, and personality you want, and then you get a nice little photo album slideshow of the baby's childhood while the game's credits roll.

THIS JUST IN: Nickelodeon announces exciting TLH film sequel 'No Time to Spy: A Loud House Movie' releases on Paramount+ in America by Summer 2024 [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]
Tumblr media
ROYAL WOODS, MICHIGAN -- A new sequel film reportedly announced last Friday (April 26th, 2024 -- Michigan local time), based on the Nickelodeon's hit original animated series 'The Loud House' is set to premiere exclusively on the American streaming platform, known as 'Paramount+'.
'Kyle Anthony Marshall', whose previously a Canadian animator and the current Executive Producer and Director at Nickelodeon, who has directed several episodes of the aforementioned animated cartoon series of 'The Loud House' said that the new movie sequel is set to premiere to stream all across America by Summer 2024, with the help of animated production company duos of 'Jam Filled Entertainment' (JFE) in Canada and 'Nickelodeon Animation Studio' (NAS) in Burbank, California, United States of America (U.S.A.).
Moreover, 'No Time to Spy: A Loud House Movie' is the 2nd TLH movie franchise, following the 1st streaming film of 'The Loud House Movie' which is previously released on Netflix a few years back in the late-August 2021.
Before that from 2 years ago in the fall of 2022, a Nickelodeon employee showed an untitled movie sequel title was leaked on their 'LinkedIn' profile, as obtained exclusively from a Californian-based YouTuber 'Vailskibum'. They accidentally revealed that a sequel to 'The Loud House Movie 2' is supposedly in the works, per the individual role of 'Associate Picture Editor' at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area (LAMA) for Nickelodeon Animation Studio (NAS). Within a few years later, we do confirmed that the actual, legally untitled movie sequel title is 'No Time to Spy: A Loud House Movie'.

A Behind the Scenes of: Jane's Photos
Jonathan and El go over some of her photos in the book and give insight into the stories behind them.
On AO3.
Ships: Elumax, jargancy, jopper, byler
Warnings: none.
~~~~~~~~~~~
The video opens with Jonathan and El. Jonathan greets: “Hi, I’m Jonathan Byers, the main photographer and editor of A Collection of Queer Photography. Today my sister is visiting, so me and Jane are going to look at her photos in the book,” Jonathan starts the video.
El is sitting on the other chair, her hair up in a messy bun and long dangly earrings. She’s wearing a patterned dress with a loose sweater over it as she smiles into the camera, her eyes a little too wide. All the years have made her integrate more, but there is still an edge of odd about her, though she wears it well.
“Some people online have commented that we do not look like each other, that is because Jane is adopted,” Jonathan says. “She came to live with us when she was fourteen, lived with Jim before that and she took an interest in photography in ‘86 to capture all the memories that might get lost if you don’t capture them. It really helped when Max was in a coma.”
“That is correct,” El nods with a smile still on her face.
“You wanna do the honors?” Jonathan asks, holding the book out to her which has a few tabs peaking out again.
“Yes, please,” El answers as she takes it and flips it open.
Jonathan meanwhile says: “She has quite a few in there, so we’re not talking about all of them, just a selection that Jane made.” Then he turns back to El and asks: “Which one are we starting with?”
“This one,” El replies, showing Jonathan the page as between them the image appears.
The photo is taken in the Hopper-Byers house living room. Hopper has his arms around Joyce’s waist, while she has hers around his neck. The two of them are kissing passionately. Around them are flower petals and there are two wine glasses on the table. Hopper had coordinated with El on the moment, so all the petals floated like a garden galaxy.
“She Said Yes,” Jonathan reads. “Ahw, when mom and dad got engaged in ‘91. That is a beautiful photo.”
“It is,” El agrees. “Dad was very nervous about it. We rehearsed it a hundred times while mom was at work. Picking up petals is a pain.”
Jonathan laughs at that, before he asks: “Why did you pick this one?”
“I think it shows how hard dad tried and the effort he puts in,” El says. “He isn’t a big gestures kind of person, but he knows mom would have liked something like this, so he made the effort. I think that’s so sweet.”
“Totally,” Jonathan agrees with a soft smile. “And it says a lot about them too. How they relate to each other.”
El nods, before flipping to the next tab. She Said Yes gets replaced by Kitchen Helper, which is of Argyle taking the turkey from the oven. Jonathan is hovering behind him with the roasted potatoes in his hands, which have been deposited there by Argyle moments earlier.
“This is Kitchen Helper from thanksgiving 1991,” El says. “I think it is a very cute photo. You are always so scared Argyle is going to burn himself, even if he’s a professional chef.”
Jonathan blushes a little and Argyle comments: “You do hover a little, baby boy,” from behind the camera. His sound quality is much better, he must have gotten a mic.
“But you do burn yourself,” Jonathan splutters, defending himself. “You’re always reaching into hot ovens and surrounded by burning oil.”
“Hazard of the job, buttercup,” Argyle says, a smile audible in his voice.
“Doesn’t mean I have to like it,” Jonathan pouts, while El giggles at the two of them.
“See,” she says. “This is exactly the dynamic you can see in the photo.”
Jonathan pauses for a second, then gives into it and laughs: “I guess it is. And it is a cute photo, I love it.”
At that El grins widely, before flipping ahead again. The photo that comes on stage is of Max walking the stage with her crutches. Her head is held high and pride leaves her every pore. As she looks at it, El can’t help but light up with pride.
“Max Walking the Stage,” Jonathan reads, leaning over so he can also see. He tells the audience: “That was 1993, when the twerps all graduated college.”
“You’re only a few years older than us,” El points out.
“And that’s a few years enough,” Jonathan grins back, ruffling her hair while she tries to duck away with a halfhearted protest and a grin on her face.
Once they’ve stopped their little tussling war and both have straightened out again, El says: “I love how proud Max looks. She was so nervous about it, because she was having a bad day, so she needed the crutches, unlike at high school when she could manage without them for the stage walk itself.”
“I couldn’t tell,” Jonathan says, sounding a little surprised, like he also hadn’t known that.
“She did not want you to,” El tells him gently. “She hated that she was even nervous about it, because she did not want it to be a thing she was ashamed off. She never wants people to think that about her. For her the crutches are a part of her, not a weakness or something extra. She is proud of her disability, she just knew that people in the audience would pity her and she hated it. But she is so strong and stubborn and she walked that stage with pride.” El’s voice turns a little mushy as she adds: “God, I love her.”
Jonathan smiles fondly at his sister and softly says: “That’s lovely, Jane. I think you managed to capture that defiance perfectly. It’s very much a Max photo.”
El smiles back at him, before there is a cut, the book open on a new page. El introduces it: “This one is Late LA Nights from when me, Max and Lucas moved to LA in 1993 where Mike and Will lived.”
On screen the photo is of Mike and Will dancing in comfortable clothes in their living room. They’re close together, Mike’s arms around Will’s waist, noses pressed together and their eyes closed.
“Mike and Will love dancing,” Jonathan comments. “I don’t know how that happened, but it’s so sweet.”
“I blame you,” El says. “You made Will like music. And mom and dad, who dance.”
“You’re not a dancer?” Jonathan quirks a brow. “I would have sworn I heard [BEEP] talk about how her aunt took her to a dance class.”
When there is a beep a note appears on screen: *Mike and Will have asked the names of their daughters to be kept out, thank you for understanding.
“She’s cute and she really wanted to,” El defends herself. “Besides, I do not hate dancing, I just lived in the same city as these two for too many years.”
“You and Max are just as bad,” Jonathan points out, though he sounds fond. “And you still live in the same city as them.”
“Max told me we are cute when we do it,” El informs him seriously. “And why would I want to live in a different city from them? They are my friends.”
“Of course,” Jonathan says, then moves on. “But this is a cute photo and a little snippet of Mike and Will. What’s the next one?”
“This one,” El shows him a page, pointing to the lower right corner.
“Free Time, nice,” Jonathan says, while on screen an image of Lucas in sport’s clothes shooting hoops on a basketball court on a sunny autumn day appears. In the background is Max riding her skateboard, her crutches are on the ground near the photographer, as if they were just put down to take the photograph.
“It is very nice, yes,” El agrees. “As you said, I like capturing memories and this is a fond one. We used to go to this park all the time, now we have found a new one closer to our home, but this one was the one we first found when we moved to LA. On Max’s good days, she will skateboard and we will make flower crowns or bracelets or braid each other’s hair when it was a bad one. Or she will read to me.”
“That sounds very lovely,” Jonathan tells her, despite already knowing it. Just to affirm her in her recollection.
El smiles and nods. “It is,” she confirms, before flipping the page again to the next tab.
On screen Free Time gets replaced by Sea Chickens. It is from a Californian beach, the early spring already nice enough to allow a day at the beach. The photograph is taken from the sand, but is of the sea itself, where Lucas, Max, Mike and Will are playing in the water.
They might be adults, but that doesn’t stop them from playing chicken. Max is on Lucas’ shoulders, while Will is on Mike’s. Lucas has his hand in Mike’s face, pushing him away, while Max and Will have each other’s hands in a hold, pushing without success. All of them are laughing.
“This was one of the first swim weather days of 1994,” El says. “Winter does not really exist in LA, that is weird, but it is not always weather to swim. I am not a big fan of swimming, but it is fun to watch the others be idiots.”
Jonathan snorts at that and agrees: “They do seem to turn into five year olds whenever they come near a body of water.”
“They do,” El agrees.
“I like how Mike’s face is completely smushed by Lucas,” Jonathan points out. “And you can really see how strong Will’s arms are.”
“Will had been experimenting with sculptures during this time,” El recalls. “He had been lugging around all sorts of heavy materials.” She wrinkles her nose and adds: “Mike was horny about it. I heard too much about my brother’s arms than necessary.”
Jonathan chokes on a laugh as he wheezes: “Oh my god, I am so glad I missed that,” in a manner that is unlike how he usually is on camera, seemingly a lot less shy when joking with El.
El joins in as she giggles: “I suddenly related to dad a lot, I almost instated a three inches apart rule in my house,” which sets Jonathan off again.
The two laughing gets cut off and they appear calmed down again. The two are a little red in the face from laughter, but bravely move onto the next photo.
On screen appears a photo of Max on her knees in the living room of the Mayfield-Sinclair apartment. She is playing with Sir Fluff. On the couch behind her are Mike and Will. Mike is lounging, legs thrown over Will’s lap as he watches Max and the cat. Will is rubbing Mike’s ankles absentmindedly as he talks with Lucas, who is standing next to the couch.
“This is Sir Fluff and Company,” Jonathan tells the viewer, before asking El: “Do you remember when you took this one?”
“Not exactly,” El says. “We hang out at each other’s place a lot. It’s just natural. We have each others keys, had them back then too. We just show up.”
“I love that,” Jonathan says. “I’m pretty sure we have the keys to the Munson house and mom and dad’s house.”
“We have a copy of Erica’s key too from when we stayed at her place when she had the conference,” Argyle pipes up.
“We still have that?” Jonathan asks. “Should we- Should we give that back?”
“Nah, she would have asked,” Argyle replies.
“Sure,” Jonathan agrees, before turning back to the photo. “So this was a typical scene?”
“Yeah, Lucas does this thing where he will get up to grab something to drink, then forget because he started a conversation again. That is why he is standing there,” El explains. “And Mike will always take over the couch like a mouth breather.”
“He does sprawl, doesn’t he,” Jonathan says with a look of mild, yet playful disgust on his face.
The two of them giggle again, in the action it is clear that gossiping together is a habit both have picked up over the years. Even with the camera there, they easily fall into the giggling comments and jokes.
After a second, El flips the page again and smiles: “That was when you and Nancy and Argyle came to visit.”
“That was so fun,” Jonathan says. “I love being able to come out to see you. Having careers in different cities sucks. Why did we do that?”
“Because Nancy is stubborn and Max is too?” El suggests.
Jonathan makes a face that says ‘Fair enough,’ then bends over the book again. The photo is of the guest room at the Mayfield-Sinclairs. On the bed are Argyle, Jonathan and Nancy, the three of them still fast asleep. Nancy is on her back in the middle, while Argyle and Jonathan are both turned to her, heads practically on her shoulders. Argyle has a leg thrown over both of them, while Jonathan has an arm over Nancy, hand buried in Argyle’s shirt.
Jonathan comments: “I will never get over how tall Argyle is.”
“You love it, baby,” Argyle chips in.
“I do,” Jonathan agrees easily as he looks up, love sick smile on his face.
El hits him on the arm and says: “Do not be gross.”
“Ouch, Jane,” Jonathan pouts. “And I wasn’t being gross.”
That earns him a look that communicates that El very much does not agree with that statement, but she lets it be as she moves back to the page: “I think it is cute how you two mirror each other even when asleep.”
“It’s comfortable,” Jonathan shrugs.
“Do you guys still have a schedule about who gets to be in the middle?” El asks, while Jonathan blushes. Innocently, she adds: “I think that is very sweet. You guys are great at communicating and planning.”
That softens Jonathan up and he smiles: “We do, but it’s not a hard law. And we worked hard on that communication. You do the same with Max and Lucas.”
“We had you to be an example,” El says earnestly.
You can see how Jonathan tears up a bit, in lieu of an answer he snatches El close and hugs her tightly. El startles a little but melts into the touch with a happy yet confused smile. There is rustling and before the video cuts, you can hear Argyle mutter: “Gotta get in on that hugging action.”
After the cut, the two are sitting again, Jonathan’s eyes are a little red rimmed, but he is smiling widely as he says: “And we’re at the last photo now. It’s Jonathan’s New Years Kiss taken in 1995, but only just.”
The photo that appears on screen is of Jonathan lowering his camera in surprise as Argyle and Nancy kiss him on his cheeks at the same time.
“This one is cute,” El says. “You are always snapping photographs on New Years. Nancy says you cannot stop working.”
“Nancy also can’t stop working,” Jonathan pouts a little, before he must admit: “But I do find it hard to put the camera down. It’s just hard when you view the world through what would be a great photo and then you can’t take it when you see one, you know.”
“I know,” El says. “But dad says taking photos of the good times with the mental camera is also good sometimes.”
“That is because his photos are always blurry and his finger is always in there too,” Jonathan points out.
“Mom agrees,” El counters.
“Okay, so maybe there is something to it, but I have been getting better about it,” Jonathan defends himself.
“He has,” Argyle defends him from behind the camera.
“Thank you.”
“I believed you,” El promises, though she looks a little mischievous as she does.
“Sure,” Jonathan tells her, like he doesn’t believe her, El doesn’t seem to mind. Jonathan goes back to the topic at hand: “But it is a cute photo, even if I look like an idiot.”
“That is your face, as Will would say,” El tells him.
“You and Will need to stop hanging out,” Jonathan replies, to which he only gets a smile in return, so he rolls his eyes back.
There is a cut, then Jonathan is saying to El: “I really enjoyed looking at these photos with you. You have a fun style of taking photos and you really added a new perspective in the book. Thank you.”
“You are welcome,” El smiles. “It was fun to contribute.”
“Tell the people where they can find Jane’s stuff,” Argyle directs from behind the camera, obviously more familiar with YouTube than the two in front it.
“Oh, yeah, if you want to see more of Jane’s photography it is @JaneMPhotos on Instagram,” Jonathan says. “It is mostly photos of their pets and it is delightful.”
On screen two photos appear. The left one is of Lucas laying on the ground with a defeated look on his face, on his chest lies Hank, their husky, with what can only be a smug look on his face. On the right is a photo of Max, Pino on her finger. She is whistling to the bird and the bird is whistling right back.
Then Jonathan signs off: “So, yeah, that is a behind the scene of the photos Jane took for this book. Thank you so much for being here.”
“You are welcome,” El replies.
“Bye,” Jonathan waves and El follows after a second.
craft essay a day #10
i can't believe my highlighter ran out of ink. anyway, back to the sweet safety of a beginner essay.
“Research in Fiction” by Angela Barrett, The Writer’s Notebook II: Craft Essays from Tin House
beginner | intermediate | advanced | masterclass
filed under: process, research, meaning making
summary
Barrett begins the essay by recounting a situation she seems to think is widely experienced but has never once happened to me: falling so far down a well of research for a story that you lose sight of the project and/or fill the story with all the research you learned, neglecting the characters.
but i do know there are plenty of writers out there who basically live in research wells so i definitely get what she's saying.
"I hate how dangerous research can be for our work. It's always easier, and often more fun, to dive into books and photos and the shark-filled depths of the online world than to write."
again, i do not find research easier than writing. i would always rather be writing than researching. so, this essay is probably not for me, although i would love to read an essay whose point is "maybe at least read the wikipedia article? you fool?"
the very big point she is making (and a great point it is) is that when you research for fiction, you're not invoking the facts of a time or place or trade, but translating those facts into a lived experience that will shape and affect your characters.
"What is the research for? Think about it like this: research is simply a way of understanding what our characters understand."
she goes on to point out that Tolstoy started writing War and Peace when he was thirty-five. today, many of us assume he was writing about his own time, but actually he was writing from several decades later. Barrett points out that for those of us around his age, it would be like writing about World War II.
she concludes with an amendment to writing what you know:
"A more generous, more useful interpretation of the phrase ['write what you know'] is that we should write about what we know, however we come to know it, whether by vision or sensual experience or reading or conversation or passionate imagining."
why did the editor bother keeping the Johnston essay, when Barrett more or less said what he was trying to say in a single paragraph, and more cogently?
my thoughts
when it comes to research for fiction, the most helpful thing i can suggest is developing the skill to name what you don't yet know, but know could be known.
let's take banking, for example. because i worked at a bank for ten years, i know a lot about finance and therefore i know what kinds of conflicts can develop for characters in that setting, and how it might inform their perspectives or identities or choices. i know things that can't be researched because trade secret agreements keep anyone from writing nonfiction on the inner workings of a financial institution.
because i know banking so well, i can apply the framework of my knowledge to other topics and use that framework to begin my research.
for example:
at the bank, every morning i had to run the daily insufficient funds report. the NSF report exists to decide whether or not the bank will pay or bounce checks for funds that aren't available in someone's account. hence, insufficient funds report. when you write a check and you don't have enough money in your account to pay it, a real human person decides what to do about it.
twenty bucks? not a problem. you pay it, you move on. but i was in business and that meant i was paying sometimes thousands of payroll checks for a company that didn't have the funds to pay them. paying insufficient funds means giving the customer a line of credit that has no promissory note or collateral to secure it, which means there's no guarantee the bank will get back its funds.
and yet, if i don't pay it, thousands of people won't get their paycheck.
that's an external conflict that can only happen in this setting, with internal repercussions and potentially personal consequences for your character. (in reality, i had to obtain a lot of approvals, but that's less of an interesting conflict; fictionalizing means fudging things sometimes for the sake of being interesting.)
this has other implications, too. when you make a debit card transaction, for example, the process of the bank choosing to pay or not pay must happen automatically, without a real human person making that decision. before 2013ish, most banks had a policy that debit card transactions would always be paid, regardless of how much money was in the account.
this was a perfect storm: customers could either overdraw their account and accumulate a massive number of fees ($38 at the time for a single overdraw, even one penny over), or they could open an overdraft line of credit. most people don't have good enough credit to open an overdraft line of credit, which meant people had to overdraft. a few banks had the courtesy of allowing you to dip into your savings for overdrafting. but not many.
and banks could say this was a good thing: you'll never get your card declined! we'll pay any purchase! (evil laughter)
then during the Obama administration, somebody finally decided that was super shitty and developed Reg E which forced banks to allow customers to opt in or out of overdrafting on debit card transactions. so finally you could go into a bank and say, "i want to opt out of overdraft," which means that on one hand, if you don't have the funds in your account, your card will get declined, potentially leaving you in a bad situation with whatever you're trying to purchase; but you'll never have to pay $38 for overdrawing your account by a nickel.
whew. okay. so here, as myself, i have an annoying daily situation which has greater historical and social context. and as a researcher writing about, say, a mechanic, i can begin my research by asking, what's a mechanic's equivalent NSF report? what's the annoying thing they have to do every morning when they clock in? and maybe also, what's something they have to do that has greater personal, social, and maybe political consequences? a mechanic works on your car, and that means your safety as a driver is in their hands. that means there are regulations to consider, the history of the safety of motor vehicles and the ways cars have changed. how do all those much bigger things influence the work of your character? are they the type of mechanic who keeps that in mind, or maybe they used to but they're only going through the motions, allowing for the potential for error and therefore danger? or do they just not give a shit about that kind of thing?
i once gave a writer feedback on their story about a clown. and my question was, but what about the clown's clown friends? the writer didn't know what to say to that. i said, well i know clowns are very much about community. clowns are generally pretty proud of being clowns. so this clown would likely be affected by his status in the community of clowns in his area. he would either be in his community, and that would create a certain conflict; or he'd be an outsider of his community, and that would create a different conflict. but the point is, you the writer acknowledge an understanding of the greater life of clowns.
Barrett assumes an approach: a writer does research and then applies that research to the experience of their characters. i'm suggesting an alternative: a writer begins with the consideration of their characters and tailors their research to that experience.
good research begins with the understanding that the foundation of the human experience is that we are inwardly affected by our outward reality, and by acknowledging that, you can develop a framework in which to fill in the gaps of your knowledge by targeting what you know you don't know.
or, to put it more simply, you can always begin research with one question: what's the most annoying part of your character's day?
The palace DID brief against Harry and Meghan - what's the point in denying something so obvious?
Omid Scobie·Royal Executive Editor
Mon, 12 December 2022, 6:30 pm·9-min read
There was a moment that took place before the Sussexes’ docuseries Harry & Meghan went live that, while I sat watching the first three episodes, I couldn’t get out of my mind.
It's not that there wasn’t enough interesting material to digest. The show had emotional stories, sweet anecdotes and interesting historical context that made it a fascinating watch. But you don’t need a journalist — especially one who is far too in the weeds — to tell you what they thought of it. Best to see it for yourself (if you haven't already).
No, what had consumed my thoughts was a response to the first trailer for the six-part series, where Prince Harry is heard talking about the culture of briefing and leaks within the Palace. “There's a hierarchy of the family,” he says. “You know there's leaking, but there's also planting of stories. . . It’s a dirty game.”
Though it was just a few words (and only a preview of what’s to come), it was the first time since Princess Diana’s Panorama interview that a member of the Royal Family had so openly lifted the lid on one of the most toxic practices going on behind palace walls.
Though racism and lack of support are both important to the couple's story, the damaging stories leaked by individuals within the House of Windsor were also one of the main reasons the Sussexes felt a need to find a different path. A place to thrive, not survive, to borrow Meghan's words.
Tumblr media
Private photos of the Harry and Meghan are used in their documentary. (Netlfix)
So when I saw a British tabloid article quoting a “royal source” (that’s usually code for someone at the palace who doesn’t want to go on the record) insisting that it was “absolutely wrong” to suggest the Sussexes had been briefed against, I had to reread the sentence a second time just to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating. It was gaslighting to the extreme.
Remember the 2018 tabloid stories moaning about Meghan’s 5am emails? The drama around her tiara? These reports, and many others, included anonymous quotes from palace sources and aides.
Yet some of the more royal-friendly members of the press have been quick to express outrage at Harry suggesting such a thing took place. But then, as is often the case, mirroring palace outrage is nothing new round these parts.
The reality is, people working at the Palace did brief against Harry and Meghan while they were working royals. Regularly. And it was hardly a secret, either. While writing the book Finding Freedom, a number of the staff I spoke to complained about the culture of leaking and negative briefings within the institution. Some felt it was out of jealousy of the couple’s unrivalled popularity at the time, others shrugged and said that’s just how it goes, and a couple believed that much of it came from a place of disliking Meghan.
Palace aides also brief against other royals. With three different households back then—Clarence House, Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace—all with their own teams, it wasn’t (and still isn’t) uncommon for an aide to look out for their boss by using information about another member of the family (from a different household, and usually less senior) as currency to curry favour with the outlets you never want to be on the wrong side of. This doesn’t really happen with TV media, but is common with print and online press.
Briefing off the record or as a quotable source is by no means a bad thing and is often used by journalists, including myself. Publicists and representatives for the likes of celebrities, sports stars, politicians, companies and governments all rely on being able to quietly speak to journalists about stories or issues they may not want to go officially on the record for. In the palace's case, it can be a useful way of sharing useful or sensitive information to journalists ahead of an engagement or important moment, or simply to deny or address a story they may not want to give oxygen to.
Over the years I have written many times about the darker uses of this tool, and how it affected the Sussexes. But it wasn’t until last year that my reporting saw the Palace hit back.
On a 2021 primetime royal documentary, I suggested that it was no coincidence that stories of Prince William’s “fears” for Harry’s “fragile” state of mind had appeared in newspapers less than a day after the Duke of Sussex revealed the growing distance between the brothers during a TV special. The fact that a senior member of the then-Duke of Cambridge’s staff had used supposed concerns about Harry’s mental health as an opportunity for positive press about brother William was very much noticed by the Sussexes, I added.
Kensington Palace quickly intervened. And producers behind the show were put under pressure to remove my words. Aides for Prince William warned that it was “potentially defamatory”.
The tug-of-war went as far as executive level at the network until an 11th hour agreement to mute the audio of my voice for several seconds in the airing of the documentary was made. Certain journalists were then briefed by Kensington Palace—who did not reach out to me beforehand—that I had “no evidence” to support my claim.
“It provided a vivid example that Kensington Palace is certainly more prepared to wade in to influence media coverage when it chooses to,” says director of the William and Harry: What Went Wrong? documentary, Richard Sanders. “On the day of transmission, the Palace demanded that we remove [the] quote. People more important than myself acquiesced, although it seemed to me perfectly legally defensible.”
Defensible, indeed. In fact, what was not pointed out by outlets at the time were the original articles containing said briefings, which were published immediately after Harry & Meghan: An African Journey was broadcast in October 2019. They’re still easy to find online and, clear as day, quote a source at Kensington Palace.
“WILLS: MY FEARS FOR FRAGILE HARRY”, was The Sun’s October 21, 2019 front page. Inside the paper, a senior royal source revealed that William was worried about Harry’s “fragile" state of mind. Another source in the story added, “Harry is not in great shape. . . I’d say he’s not well.”
Tumblr media
Front pages of British newspapers purported to tell William's side of the story after Harry had disclosed in an interview he and his brother were on "different paths". (Getty Images)
And a Kensington Palace source was also quoted by BBC News on the same day, revealing that The Duke of Cambridge was "worried" about his brother. Harry and Meghan, they add, were in a “fragile” place.
Similar language appeared in a number of other outlets, including the front page of the Daily Mail: “WILLIAM’S FEARS FOR TROUBLED HARRY”.
For full transparency, these articles were not my confirmation on the origins of the original briefing. I was briefed by a senior aide at another royal household. The individual—who, at the time, felt strongly about a line being crossed by someone working for William—had sent me text messages about the briefings relating to William’s concerns for Harry’s mental health the night the newspaper stories went to print with the information.
This is just one example of the games that have long gone on behind the scenes at the palace. And what so many there, including some of the family, get dragged into, no matter how much they resist. For Harry, it’s what he says he wanted to get his family away from. Princess Diana was not so lucky.
In the past I have called the relationship between a journalist and the palaces a delicate dance, a game that needs to be an almost equal give and take to maintain access. But—as the example above illustrates—when the stakes are high, that dance can turn into something altogether more dangerous. Facts can be distorted, reputations damaged, mistruths can easily be put out into the world in seconds.
Tumblr media
Viewers of the documentary are treated to intimate glimpses of their early romance. (Netflix)
The next three episodes of Harry & Meghan will tackle this subject and the Royal Family’s relationship with the media. A new trailer released on Monday features the Duke claiming, "They were happy to lie to protect my brother. They were never willing to tell the truth to protect us". As I write this, Kensington Palace have no comment to make on the series and also declined to comment on the story I share above, but I can imagine when the second batch of episodes is released it may be different.
These first three episodes saw very little reason for a peep to come out of The Firm. In fact, the only drama to emerge was over whether or not the Palace had been given the right of reply to claims made in the Netflix series.
After a full-screen card at the start of Harry & Meghan read, “Members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the content within the series”, both Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace quickly denied being given a heads-up. Sources at both anonymously claimed they were not approached for comment (instead, they say, an email purporting to be from a third-production company was received, but no one replied when they attempted to verify its origins). A Netflix source, however, insists the communications officers of both King Charles and Prince William were contacted in advance. This is by no means the last we will hear of this story, but that’s as far it goes for now.
As is often the case, these back-and-forths quickly get messy. And it’s a shame, because so much of it could be avoided by simply not being so compelled to respond to and brief on every little thing. For a family that pretty much owns the term “never complain, never explain”, it’s almost laughable that the majority of them—and the people they keep close to their sides—have yet to actually master it.
Like I mentioned at the end of my last post, besides making a few alterations to my shirt and vest for my Batuu Bound outfit, I also got started on a new sewing project over the last two weeks, something which might also make an appearance if/when we're able to go to Batuu again, but until then will also be a nicely functional piece just around the house.
To back up a bit, I ordered a lightsaber for my birthday -- as you do when you're an adult going through a resurgence of your childhood love for Star Wars, lol -- but the one I bought on Amazon ended up being not quite what I was hoping for. I returned it and spent some more time researching exactly what I wanted for my purposes (spinning and flow arts) and what would fit my small hands and short stature the best.
I ended up ordering from an excellent small business called Vire Sabers that lets you assemble your own lightsaber from the 'variable hilt component' system of pieces that all fit together. I spent a lot of time looking through all the various pieces and combinations, including putting them all together in a photo editor until I had something that I was happy with, that is just mine, and no one else's.
The saber really deserves a post all of its own, but first I want to do some weathering on the hilt and get some video of the flow skills I've been building up over the last week and a half since it arrived. I'll post something about it eventually.
And anyway, this post is really more about sewing a padded sheath for the saber.
It's another stash-busting project, like everything else in my Batuu Bound set, for which I only bought ~$4 of cotton batting -- which is handy because when I started on it, I wasn't sure when Jack and I would be working next. The contract work situation has resolved now, but even without that, it's always nice to move fabric and crafting supplies out of my stash and into a finished, useful item.
With consideration to possibly wearing this on my back with my Batuu Bounding outfit in the (near?) future, I decided to go with a brown color palette. From my stash I pulled out:
some yardage of non-stretchy faux suede that I probably bought more than 10 years ago for a project I can no longer remember, that has kind of a grippy texture to the suede surface
wool scraps left over from the screen-accurate Jedi robe I sewed for Jack in 2012
the tan cotton canvas I bought in January when I was thinking about covering the zippers of my Moment vest rather than sewing a completely new one
brown RIT dye that again I have no idea when or why I bought it, along with a little pink and violet RIT dyes probably left over from Hit Girl in 2010
brown velcro left over from an ill-fated attempt at building disability-friendly pillows for my couch nest
~34" of 1" wide twill tape left over from my steampunk corset I sewed in 2011
rock climbing-rated seamless aluminum O rings left over from the tensegrity stand and tent I built for Wasteland Weekend 2018
dark maroon thread that came in a set of thread that I bought online when I sewed my Oswin Oswald cosplay in 2020 and couldn't go to a store to buy just one color of thread, lol
The cotton canvas was perfect for the exterior of the case/sheath/bag thing, but the color wasn't a great match for the rest of my Batuu Bounding outfit. I had used a bit of the canvas to make a collar stand for Jack's jacket late last month, so I zigzag stitched the cut edges and threw it in the washing machine with a bunch of nearly boiling water, salt, and the brown, pink, and violet RIT dyes. I had more of the brown than the pink and the violet together, but my hope was to bring the "dark brown" RIT color plus the slightly greenish tan of the cotton towards a warmer brown. I let it agitate for about half an hour, and ended up really loving the final color.
With the exterior in progress, it was time to figure out the interior. I knew I wanted to make this case/sheath padded to give the saber a bit of cushioning while being carried around, but I also didn't want to buy more than I would use (or spend a ton of money, given that I was buying this while we were in between work contracts), so most quilt batting was out, as was most foam. I ended up buying half a yard (18") of 90" long cotton batting, then cutting it into four 9" x 45" pieces and layering those on top of each other. It's not a huge amount of loft, but it is a good amount of squish, and hopefully reasonable padding for the circumstances I expect to use the case in.
I sandwiched the cotton batting between one layer of the brown (Jedi robe!) wool and one layer of the non-stretch faux suede. In the picture below, the darkest brown is the wool, and just to the left of that is the dyed canvas.
Tumblr media
The wool won't be visible at all once this is all sewn together, and the faux suede only slightly visible at the top opening, but I like how the colors all coordinate without matching exactly.
Since the cotton batting is pretty solid, quilting wasn't entirely necessary, but I did want to make sure the layers stayed together without shifting around too much, and also give the thick layers specific places to bend to form a nice round tube shape. I ended up quilting it into six narrow panels that run the whole length of the sheath, with the outer two panels each 1 cm wider for seam allowance when I sew this into a tube.
Tumblr media
I also narrowed the entire interior from 9" (measured flat) to 8", so that it hugs the saber better, and so that I can fit the narrow portion of the canvas around the bulk of the interior + saber.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The notch cut out of the upper left corner of the interior is there to create a flap that will fold over the open end of the bag/case and secure in place with velcro. I may try to find ways to sneak a few velcro attachment points into the exterior, so that it can be closed at various lengths (ie with or without the hilt).
Tumblr media
The dyed cotton canvas will eventually get a matching notch cut out of it, and the right sides of the interior and exterior sewn together before the interior is stuffed into the exterior, at which point it will look somewhat like this:
Tumblr media
Before I sew the exterior into a tube, I'm going to sew a pocket or two for carrying small essentials like blade tension screws. I'll also sew the twill tape into place, set slightly in from the top and bottom, and put those aluminum rings onto the twill tape when I do. That way the carrying strap will be gripping the whole case, all the way around, rather than have all the stress in one place. The lightsaber is only about two and a half pounds, and I can't imagine the case will weigh any more than that, but still, I want to be sure that there's nice firm support that won't give out and end up dropping the saber on the ground.
Tumblr media
Also, can I just point out the color match between the dyed canvas and the old left over piece of twill ribbon? I wasn't aiming for that! I wanted a warm brown, which is why I added the pink and violet dyes (and would have added red if I had any on hand), but I didn't even pull the twill tape from my stash until after I was done dyeing the canvas. It matches so well it looks like I bought them as a pair, but they were bought more than a decade apart and didn't match before I just chucked whatever dyes I had on hand into the washer, lol. I would have been fine with a bit of a color mismatch, but this works too!
At this point, I think I'm ready to sew the interior into a tube, with the grippy faux-suede on the inside, and the wool on the outside where it will eventually be sandwiched next to the canvas. I have squares of the cotton batting from where I cut out the notch for the flap, so I think I'm going to try to sew those to the outside of the seam along the narrow bottom edge, to give that even more padding. That's a lot of layers to put through my sewing machine, so we'll see if it'll cooperate or if I'll end up doing that bit by hand.
After that, I'm going to turn my attention to the exterior. I have some smaller pieces of dyed canvas that aren't in the above pictures, that I'm going to use to make a crossbody strap that connects to the those rings, along with a pocket or two. The pockets, some of the velcro closures, and the twill tape and rings need to be sewn down before I can turn the canvas into a tube, so all of that will be the next major step in this project.
I think I also want to paint (or sharpie) some Aurebesh on the exterior canvas, something along the lines of 'fragile antique - handle with care'. The character I put together for my Batuu adventures isn't a Jedi (or a Sith), but rather makes a living finding antiques and oddities on outer rim worlds and transporting them to the inner rim and core worlds to sell at a profit. Not many people can read Aurebesh, but it'll add a bit of visual texture and storytelling all the same. And then if I have another run in with Kylo Ren, I can state for certain that I'm not a Jedi sympathizer, just an antiques dealer looking to turn a profit, lol.
If we do end up going to a Star Wars Nite at Disneyland, I think it could be fun to take my saber along, participate in the lightsaber meetup in front of the Falcon, and maybe even get some photos or videos of my spinning skills while I'm there. But even if this case is only ever used to store my saber here at home, it'll give it a place to live that's not my sewing table, where it's been living since it arrived, and the rings will let me hang it from a hook on the wall rather that take up any horizontal surface space. It'll be nice to look at while also keeping my saber easily accessible and ready to spin.
We don't have tickets for a Star Wars Nite event yet, but the first one is on April 16th, so I'm giving myself just under a month to finish this. I don't think I'll need that long -- but with the new work situation starting up tomorrow, it's really hard to say. I could have it finished by this time next week, or be hurrying to finish it the last weekend before we go back to Batuu, we'll just have to see how this next month works out.
Either way, I'll post more pictures here as it comes together.
