Tiny BurstCube's Tremendous Travelogue

Meet BurstCube! This shoebox-sized satellite is designed to study the most powerful explosions in the cosmos, called gamma-ray bursts. It detects gamma rays, the highest-energy form of light.

BurstCube may be small, but it had a huge journey to get to space.

First, BurstCube was designed and built at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Here you can see Julie Cox, an early career engineer, working on BurstCube’s gamma-ray detecting instrument in the Small Satellite Lab at Goddard.

BurstCube is a type of spacecraft called a CubeSat. These tiny missions give early career engineers and scientists the chance to learn about mission development — as well as do cool science!

Then, after assembling the spacecraft, the BurstCube team took it on the road to conduct a bunch of tests to determine how it will operate in space. Here you can see another early career engineer, Kate Gasaway, working on BurstCube at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

She and other members of the team used a special facility there to map BurstCube’s magnetic field. This will help them know where the instrument is pointing when it’s in space.

The next stop was back at Goddard, where the team put BurstCube in a vacuum chamber. You can see engineers Franklin Robinson, Elliot Schwartz, and Colton Cohill lowering the lid here. They changed the temperature inside so it was very hot and then very cold. This mimics the conditions BurstCube will experience in space as it orbits in and out of sunlight.

Then, up on a Goddard rooftop, the team — including early career engineer Justin Clavette — tested BurstCube’s GPS. This so-called open-sky test helps ensure the team can locate the satellite once it’s in orbit.

The next big step in BurstCube’s journey was a flight to Houston! The team packed it up in a special case and took it to the airport. Of course, BurstCube got the window seat!

Once in Texas, the BurstCube team joined their partners at Nanoracks (part of Voyager Space) to get their tiny spacecraft ready for launch. They loaded the satellite into a rectangular frame called a deployer, along with another small satellite called SNoOPI (Signals of Opportunity P-band Investigation). The deployer is used to push spacecraft into orbit from the International Space Station.

From Houston, BurstCube traveled to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, where it launched on SpaceX’s 30th commercial resupply servicing mission on March 21, 2024. BurstCube traveled to the station along with some other small satellites, science experiments, as well as a supply of fresh fruit and coffee for the astronauts.

A few days later, the mission docked at the space station, and the astronauts aboard began unloading all the supplies, including BurstCube!

And finally, on April 18, 2024, BurstCube was released into orbit. The team will spend a month getting the satellite ready to search the skies for gamma-ray bursts. Then finally, after a long journey, this tiny satellite can embark on its big mission!

The Original Crew of Gemini 9

The original prime crew of Gemini 9 (GT-9) was to be Elliot M. See Jr., command pilot, and Charles A. Bassett II, pilot. They were a part of NASA Astronaut Group 2 "New Nine" and Group 3 "The Fourteen", respectively, and this would have been their first spaceflight. On February 28, 1966, about four months before their scheduled May 17 spaceflight, they and the backup crew flew in two T-38s from Houston, Texas to St. Louis, Missouri. They were there for two weeks of simulator training for rendezvous and docking procedures, and to inspect their Gemini spacecraft at the McDonnell Aircraft plant.

"See and Bassett flew in one Northrop T-38A Talon jet trainer, tail number NASA 901 (Air Force serial number 63-8181), with See at the controls and Bassett in the rear seat. A second T-38, NASA 907, carried Stafford and Cernan in the same configuration. Weather at Lambert Field in St. Louis was poor, with rain, snow, and fog, broken clouds at 800 ft (240 m) and a cloud ceiling of 1,500 ft (460 m), requiring an instrument approach. When the two aircraft emerged below the clouds shortly before 9 am, both pilots realized that they had missed the outer marker and overshot the runway.

See then elected to perform a visual circling approach, a simplified landing procedure allowing flight under instrument rules, as long as the pilot can keep the airfield and any preceding aircraft in sight. The reported weather conditions at the airport were adequate for this type of approach, but visibility was irregular and deteriorating rapidly. Stafford began to follow See's plane, but when he lost sight of it in the clouds.

"As See and Bassett’s jet vanished from sight, Stafford barked to Cernan in his backseat: 'Goddammit, where’s he going?' It was the last they ever saw of their comrades."

"Stafford instead followed the standard procedure for a missed approach and pulled his aircraft up, back into the clouds for another attempt at an instrument landing.

See completed a full circle to the left at an altitude of 500 to 600 ft (150 to 180 m), and announced his intention to land on the southwest runway (24). With landing gear down and full flaps, the plane dropped quickly but too far left of the runway. See turned on his afterburner to increase power while pulling up and turning hard right. Seconds later, at 8:58 a.m. CST, the plane struck the roof of McDonnell Building 101 on the northeast side of the airport. It lost its right wing and landing gear on impact, then cartwheeled and crashed in a parking lot beyond the building which was in use as a construction staging area."

"The wreckage of their T-38 training jet, covered with firefighting foam. The jet clipped the roof of Building 101 with its right wing, then skipped twice along the roof before plunging into a construction yard nearby and exploding."

Both astronauts died instantly from trauma sustained in the crash. Inside Building 101, 17 McDonnell employees and contractors received mostly minor injuries from falling debris. The crash set off several small fires inside the building, and caused minor flooding from broken pipes and sprinklers. Stafford and Cernan didn't see the crash and made an instrument landing 14 minutes later. They were asked by the control tower, “Who was in NASA 901?” Stafford replied back “See and Bassett." They were told that McDonnell Aircraft Corp. had a message for them. "A few minutes later, as Stafford opened his canopy, there was James McDonnell ('Mr. Mac' himself, aviation pioneer and founder of McDonnell Aircraft Corp.) waiting for them. In solemn tones, he explained that See and Bassett were dead."

See, 38, had been a civilian test pilot and the married father of two girls. Bassett, 34, an Air Force pilot, left a wife, a daughter and a son.

"Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton flew to St. Louis to lead an investigation. Their closed investigative hearing was held in Building 101. On May 27, their report cited deteriorating weather conditions and a descent that was too steep for See to pull out."

"The promotion of Stafford and Cernan from backup to prime crew meant that a new backup crew was required. Jim Lovell and Buzz Aldrin were originally the backup crew for Gemini 10. This is significant as the standard crew rotation meant that a spot on the backup crew of Gemini 10 would have placed Buzz Aldrin on the prime crew of the non-existent mission after Gemini 12 (the crew rotation usually meant that after serving on a backup crew, an astronaut could expect to skip two missions and then be on a prime crew). Being moved up to the backup crew of Gemini 9 meant that Aldrin flew as part of the prime crew on Gemini 12, which played a major part in his selection for the Apollo 8 backup and Apollo 11 prime crews, ultimately making him the second human on the Moon."

The Ultimate Chick Flick Movie Night (not the usual suspects)

I love a chick flick, I have so many great memories of watching them with my girlfriends till 3 in the morning! And as much as I love Mean Girls, Cinderella Story, and What a Girl Wants, I love the Chick Flicks that aren’t usual “go to’s”. Here are some of my favs!

“Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion”

This one is a classic! Two women who were “nobodies” in high school make up new lives when they go to their high school reunion. It’s in my opinion one of the best Chick Flicks because at its core it is a film about female friendships. Also the costuming is FABULOUS!

“Saved!”

Not your usual plot for a chick flick, Saved! is about a teen girl at a Christian School who sleeps with her gay boyfriend to help “make him straight again.” She becomes pregnant and with the help of the school misfits (who she once looked down on) hides it from everyone. A great movie about friendship but also as someone who grew up in the church it’s a refreshing take on “Gods love.” Also hilarious, Mandy Moore plays the Evangelical Villain very well!

“Sugar and Spice”

If you love a campy Chick Flick, look no further than Sugar and Spice. A cheer squad turns grocery store robbers to help financially support their pregnant cheer captain. Now this is not a necessarily a good movie, but it sure as hell is a good time!

“Whip It”

Directed by Drew Barrymore and starring Elliot Page, this film is about Bliss who joins a roller derby team behind her parents back and just really finds herself! Such a good film, and made me think I could do Roller Derby 😬… I can’t.

“Bride and Prejudice”

Ahhhhhhh I love this movie so much! Now 2005 P&P has a had a death grip on me for over 15 years but this is one of my fav Pride and Prejudice adaptations! The music, the dancing, the camp! This Bollywood version of P&P is just filled with so much joy and life, I cannot recommend enough!

“The Joy Luck Club”

This film isn’t probably what first pops into peoples heads when they think of Chick Flicks, but hear me out. Based off of Amy Tam’s novel, this film is about 4 Chinese American women and their mothers who immigrated from China. This movie has so much heart, its focus is on the complications of mother-daughter relationships but also on the experiences of Chinese Immigrants and children of immigrants. If you watch have a box of tissues close by…

“Waiting to Exhale”

I have very distinct memory of wanting to watch this movie so bad as a child but not being able to because it’s rated R. But I’m old enough now and wow! So fantastic! This film is about four women, their struggles and how they overcome them. And hot damn this cast is stacked! Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett to name a few, it’s a must watch!

“Jawbreaker”

Jawbreaker was Mean Girls before Mean Girls! Also if the Mean Girls accidentally killed one of their own and were forced to try and hide it from the police. A little bit of a darker chick flick, I would definitely recommend this one to anyone who is a horror camp fan. It’s fun but also a little fucked up!

as the NFL season approaches i would just like to take the time to say to Deshaun Watson, the Cleveland Browns’ organization and the NFL organization a big fuck you

if you are not aware of the situation surrounding Cleveland Browns’ new QB Deshaun Watson, let me fill you in a bit:

In March 2021, massage therapist Ashley Solis came forward and filed a claim of sexual misconduct against Watson. After Solis came forward another 23 - yes TWENTY THREE - women came forward and filed sexual misconduct lawsuits including 2 sexual assault lawsuits against the QB. In the cases of sexual assault it is said that Watson would force the massage therapists to perform oral intercourse on him and in one case grabbed a woman by her buttocks and vagina.

As NFL fans watched this situation unfold, many made the assumption that Watson’s days as an NFL player would be nothing short but over. But in the 2021-2022 season Watson was benched by the Houston Texans but was still a member of the organization and in March of this year he was traded to the Cleveland Browns. Upon his arrival the Cleveland Browns put out this statement..

Which to me just sounds like “We really don’t care that he’s tied to sexually assaulting dozens of women and also we hate women but we’re going to act like we care”

Anyways as a result of Watson’s trial that was held yesterday former federal judge Sue L. Robinson found Watson guilty of violating the personal conduct policy and suspended him ONLY SIX GAMES. TWO DOZEN SEXUAL MISCONDUCT/ASSAULT LAWSUITS AND ONLY SUSPENDED SIX GAMES

For context, let’s go through a list of player suspensions for some insignificant offenses:

- Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley: suspended at least an entire season for betting money on games he had no involvement in.

- Kansas City WR Josh Gordon was suspended 78 games for smoking marijuana

- Arizona Cardinals WR Deandre Hopkins: suspended 6 games for using PEDs

- Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady: suspended 4 games for under inflated footballs

Although these suspensions may be valid in terms of some of the NFL’s policies. Once you see the suspensions I’m about to mention you’ll understand why I call those offenses “insignificant”

- Former Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice: suspended 2 games for domestic violence toward his fiancé

- Former NFL RB Adrian Peterson: suspended 6 games after being arrested for felony child abuse

- Former Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy: had his suspension lowered from 10 games to 4 after assaulting his girlfriend at the time

- Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliot: suspended 6 games for hitting women

- Former St. Louis Rams DE Leonard Little: suspended 8 games after committing vehicular homicide

- Former NFL WR Donte Stallworth: suspended 16 games after committing DUI Manslaughter

- Las Vegas Raiders WR Henry Ruggs III: charged with DUI resulting in death and has yet to be handed a penalty by the NFL

There are other cases and suspensions like this but I think you guys get the jist.

I am so sick and tired of these athletes getting away with these crimes just because of who they are and their status. It’s not fair that they get to ruin other people’s lives just to go about living their lives like nothing happened while leaving the victims to deal with the trauma. It’s time that the NFL and other sports organizations step up and hold these players accountable and ban them from playing in these leagues. Letting these athletes keep playing after committing these crimes sends the message to the young kids and anybody who watches those leagues that the crimes these men commit aren’t that serious and that there aren’t serious consequences for these actions. This could potentially switch the mentality of many young men to a very dangerous one.

As a young woman who enjoys the NFL and other sports it genuinely upsets and scares me how easily these athletes get off after committing these very serious crimes. It really goes to show how much these organizations don’t give a shit about women or any other minority or anyone/anything else in the sports world other than themselves and their pockets. It seems as though these leagues and athletes don’t care who gets hurt in the process as long as they get paid in the end. It’s truly sickening and terrifying to see what this world has come to.

Millennial Mixtape Challenge

This year has been a lot of things for me - the realization that I’m getting old (I have a teenager), the publication of my first book, losing count of the amount of times I’ve watched Sons of Anarchy (I swear I’m in the double digits now), admitting to liking Tom Cruise in a movie. AND I’ve hit a thousand followers. Quadruple digits.

In honor of this achievement, I’m putting together the Millennial Mixtape challenge. I had these songs on either a burned cd that I [redacted] songs for or a cassette tape that I [redacted] the songs off the radio for. I remember sitting in front of my stereo with a blank cassette in and ready…listening to American Top 40 with Kasey Kasem to get these songs. And he always talked over either the beginning or the end of the song.

Yes, I had trouble remembering the name and artist of these songs. Yes, I did google some of them. I did tell you I was getting old.

y/n was absolutely livid Logan wouldn’t let her go to Houston with him

Elliot and McKade were absolutely livid Logan wouldn’t let them go to Houston with him

Y/n never got many descriptions of that night. Only that Finn’s first ever mission was saving his brother

y/n stayed at home with McKade, Elliot, Jade, and Sadie. They stayed up nearly all night waiting for any kind of communication

there was nothing until, three days later, Logan got home with Diego

and he still wouldn’t tell y/n what happened. Not that Finn had a nervous breakdown in the middle of the mission and that Gaz practically had to carry him. Not that Keegan and Hesh both got shot multiple times for Diego. Not that Rorke had the barrel of a gun pressed against their son’s head. Not that Rorke’s brains were splattered on the wall from a bullet that came out of Logan’s gun. Not that Diego had watched him kill Rorke. Not that Diego cling to Finn the entire way home, that he wouldn’t look at Logan, wouldn’t even get close enough for Logan to touch him

Diego was different when he got home. Traumatized, almost. He didn’t cry, didn’t have much of a reaction at all other than the fact that he wanted to sit on the couch with his whole family and not move

Sadie tried to get him to say something, but he didnt

And the eight of them, including Finn who’d returned home, sat there with him

They all fell asleep in the living room, in the floor, on the couches, in chairs

And the next morning, Sunday morning, they woke up to more silence from Diego

deep down Logan knew he’d scarred the kid for life, but what was he supposed to do? Let Rorke shoot him?

everyone was so gentle with Diego. They handled him like glass. Like porcelain. It broke y/n and Logan’s heart that, after they got home, when Logan moved toward Diego, Diego would back away

he slowly started talking again, but not to Logan. He started smiling again, but not at what Logan said. He started to laugh at jokes, and play games, and go back to normal

all except for the fact that he was avoiding Logan

it was absolutely heart shattering for Y/n and Logan, but what could they do? Forcing him to interact could cause more harm than good, and they weren’t therapists, they didn’t know how to handle this

it was one Wednesday, after Diego had gotten home from school. Y/n was in the kitchen and Logan was working at the dining table. McKade and Elliot were in their rooms, Sadie was playing with Jade in the living room, Finn was on-base with TF141

Diego got home from school and dropped his bag. Sadie greeted him but he didn’t say anything

he bee-lined through the living room, through the kitchen. Upon his arrival, Logan stood, ready to give him his space, but instead, Diego walked straight into him, wrapping his arms around his father so tight he nearly couldn’t breathe

“I’m sorry. I love you, dad,” was all Diego said

Logan made eye constant with y/n and hugged Diego back. “I love you too, buddy”

and then, just then, their family clicked back into place. Everything shifted, everything felt, right. y/n felt, for the first time, that their future wasn’t so uncertain, that their family wasn’t so strange, that everything might just be okay from that point forward

and it was

McKade made it through medical school and became a children’s doctor, working mostly with kids that had to board at the hospital for hereditary diseases or cancer

he wasn’t one for romance. Not until one day, when he was twenty-eight, when a woman and her one-year-old son who’d just beaten cancer got transferred into his care

her name was June, and her son, Julian

he tried not to fall for her because doctor and parent was so taboo, so unnatural, so forbidden, but he couldn’t help it

after they got released, he started hanging out with her, spending time with them, and oh God, he loved them

and he married her when he was twenty-nine. They had three kids, including Julian. One was born when Julian was three, a daughter, Bailey, and then another daughter a year after that, Evie

Elliot ended up with the most oddball job out of them all. He became an underwater welder

sounds strange, but they get paid extremely extremely well

he opened up his home to house foreign exchange students when he was twenty-nine and eventually takes up fostering as a single father

he only fostered one child, a ten year old boy named Ezra, and he fell so in love that he adopted him

he never got married, he didn’t have much interest in women after what his mother did to Logan. he had a few girlfriends but Ezra was his main priority all of the time

he and Ezra had a father/son only life like he and Logan did for a bit, but it was happy as opposed to the messy divorce that caused theirs

Finn spent almost fifteen years in the military before finally settling down after losing his second leg when he was 35

he took up working business deals, being a salesman, so he got a remote job leading a team of salesman under a company that supplied car dealerships with advertising and such

he’d pretty much written off getting married until he met Alluria (uh-lore-ee-uh), a beautiful girl from Slovakia that had moved to America as a baby. He met her because she worked at the local coffee shop he spent, like, half of his life in

they got married when Finn was 36 and never had any kids, but they have a beautiful marriage and live to spend time with their nieces and nephews

Diego graduated high school and college at the top of his class, but settled on the culinary arts

he started working as a cook in someone else’s kitchen

then a manager / cook

and it spiraled and spiraled until, suddenly, y/n and Logan were watching on as he opened his own Brazilian restaraunt

he met a girl, Lacey, when she applied to work there and long story short they ended up married when Diego was 22

they had five kids. The first was a boy, Noah, when he was 23, then a girl a year later, Haven, two years after that a boy, Dallas, then a year later, female identical twins, Callie and Emma

Sadie decided not to go to college, and instead, lives, at first, by picking up odd jobs. She’d auditioned for shows and movies but never made it

She finally settled down and ended up being a freelance photographer

She married a guy named Hudson after meeting him in a theater course she took once

they had one kid, a girl, and they named her Y/n

Jade grew up with so much love and support she didn’t know what to do with it all. She played sports throughout all of her school years, but she finally settled on being a soccer player

she played through college, where she met Avery, a boy that also played soccer

and eventually they got married. Jade was 24

they had two babies, both boys, named Roman and Leo. Leo was born when she was 25, Roman when she was 26

and Y/n, Logan, and their massive family lived happily ever after

(Oh yeah; and every single one of their kids made sure to have pancake Saturdays with their own kids)
