I feel like 2022 has been an amazing year for Horror Films and here are some of my favs or ones that really stuck out! Warning spoilers ahead!
Prey (2022)
I have only seen the first predator movie and it was so-so but this movie made me want to go watch all of them. The action sequences were dope as hell and the practical affects were amazing!! If you are looking for action packed horror, this one is for you!
The Invitation (2022)
Now I’m not saying this movie is going to win any academy words or anything, but it’s a hell of a good time!! I feel I haven’t seen a good vampire movie in a while so I really enjoyed this one even if it was little campy. If you are a fan of gothic horror this one is a must watch!
Smile (2022)
Listen the only movie that has ever made me cry from fear is Sinister… until I saw this movie. I bawled cause I was legit terrified. The 2020’s really are prime for psychological horror and if that’s your cup of tea this one is up your alley.
Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
Now this one wasn’t my particular favorite, I found the ending a little predictable. However it was still a good time, and if you are a fan of horror like Scream or any of the 90’s slashers you may like this!
Nope (2022)
Last but not least, Nope was my absolute favorite horror movie of the year and is in my top 5 of all time! Jordan Peele crushed it again, the story was amazing and the casting was just *chefs kiss* it’s an Alien Horror movie like you’ve never seen before and I recommend it to everyone!!
Imma watch The Fuck outta that movie The Invitation and Imma complain the whole time about how that couldn't be me because I would simply succumb to being the bride of a vampire. In fact, I've been waiting for just that for decades.
The Ultimate Chick Flick Movie Night (not the usual suspects)
I love a chick flick, I have so many great memories of watching them with my girlfriends till 3 in the morning! And as much as I love Mean Girls, Cinderella Story, and What a Girl Wants, I love the Chick Flicks that aren’t usual “go to’s”. Here are some of my favs!
“Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion”
This one is a classic! Two women who were “nobodies” in high school make up new lives when they go to their high school reunion. It’s in my opinion one of the best Chick Flicks because at its core it is a film about female friendships. Also the costuming is FABULOUS!
“Saved!”
Not your usual plot for a chick flick, Saved! is about a teen girl at a Christian School who sleeps with her gay boyfriend to help “make him straight again.” She becomes pregnant and with the help of the school misfits (who she once looked down on) hides it from everyone. A great movie about friendship but also as someone who grew up in the church it’s a refreshing take on “Gods love.” Also hilarious, Mandy Moore plays the Evangelical Villain very well!
“Sugar and Spice”
If you love a campy Chick Flick, look no further than Sugar and Spice. A cheer squad turns grocery store robbers to help financially support their pregnant cheer captain. Now this is not a necessarily a good movie, but it sure as hell is a good time!
“Whip It”
Directed by Drew Barrymore and starring Elliot Page, this film is about Bliss who joins a roller derby team behind her parents back and just really finds herself! Such a good film, and made me think I could do Roller Derby 😬… I can’t.
“Bride and Prejudice”
Ahhhhhhh I love this movie so much! Now 2005 P&P has a had a death grip on me for over 15 years but this is one of my fav Pride and Prejudice adaptations! The music, the dancing, the camp! This Bollywood version of P&P is just filled with so much joy and life, I cannot recommend enough!
“The Joy Luck Club”
This film isn’t probably what first pops into peoples heads when they think of Chick Flicks, but hear me out. Based off of Amy Tam’s novel, this film is about 4 Chinese American women and their mothers who immigrated from China. This movie has so much heart, its focus is on the complications of mother-daughter relationships but also on the experiences of Chinese Immigrants and children of immigrants. If you watch have a box of tissues close by…
“Waiting to Exhale”
I have very distinct memory of wanting to watch this movie so bad as a child but not being able to because it’s rated R. But I’m old enough now and wow! So fantastic! This film is about four women, their struggles and how they overcome them. And hot damn this cast is stacked! Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett to name a few, it’s a must watch!
“Jawbreaker”
Jawbreaker was Mean Girls before Mean Girls! Also if the Mean Girls accidentally killed one of their own and were forced to try and hide it from the police. A little bit of a darker chick flick, I would definitely recommend this one to anyone who is a horror camp fan. It’s fun but also a little fucked up!
I have a tendency to think to highly of movies when I see them in theaters, probably just cause I love the theater and it clouds my judgement so I am going to try to be objective here.
First thoughts are as far horror movies go I think it was pretty good. I really enjoyed how they played on the trope of the killer being behind the door after it’s closed. I swear like 10 times the tension would build up as a character closed a door and the killer was never there.
As a Scream sequel I have some mixed feelings though. I like they tied it back to Billy Loomis with his daughter being the new final girl, but I didn’t like the whole part where Sam could see him. It was implied that she had some sort of psychosis but they didn’t really touch on that much. It gave me Scream 3 vibes where Sydney was having visions of her dead mom and I think that is one of the biggest downfalls of the “worst” Scream movie.
I loved the return of the OG’s and I liked that they weren’t the focus of the films, this was definitely a “passing of the torch” to new characters. I totally called Dewey being killed off, I figured they would kill of one of the 3 surviving characters and I figured it wouldn’t be Sydney, she is the ultimate final girl. And I didn’t think they would kill Gale cause Dewey would not handle her death well. Also dude almost dies like every single movie so it was bound to happen.
The killer reveal was pretty good. I saw it with my sisters since we grew up on these movies and immediately we guessed Amber as one of the killers. Richie did shock me though, I thought it was a bit too obvious for the boyfriend to be a the bad guy in what was clearly an homage to the original, but the played on that and it worked well. I think my biggest beef was the motivation. In all the scream movies at least one of the killers have like legit reasons for their murders. Billy cause Sydney’s mom had an affair with her dad, Billy’s mom cause Sydney killed Billy, Roman cause he believed Sydney had the life that should have been his, and Jill I think because of the jealousy she felt growing up in Syd’s shadow. In Scream 5 it’s like the motive was because they hated the last Stab movie? Being psychotic horror movie fans and wanting to immortalize themselves is pretty par for the course for a Scream movie but there’s usually a little something more and that felt missing in this one.
Overall, I did really like the movie! It’s not the worst Scream movie by a long shot, but to quote Sydney Prescott “Don’t fuck with the original.”
There’s just something about 90’s horror that’s so nostalgic, like it really is a breed of it’s own
The Faculty (1998) is a great alien horror movie, I read a description once that said it was Breakfast Club meets The Pod People and I have never heard of such an apt description!
And you know I can’t talk about 90s horror without taking about Scream (1996). I blame this movie for my love a slasher films! I genuinely think all of them (yes even the 3rd one) are all amazing!
Urban Legend (1998) truly traumatized me as a child but I still love it! Urban Legends come to life on a college campus, and it is because of this movie I aggressively swing my keys in the back seat of the car to make sure no one is there.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) is a good slasher as well, and even though she’s only in the first one Sarah Michelle Gellar secures herself as Scream Queen.
The Haunting (1999) is based off the same short story as The Haunting of Hill House and I will be honest … it’s not great but it is a good classic haunted house story and I am big fan of those!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) isn’t really a “horror” movie exactly cause it’s pretty corny but it birthed an amazing tv show and I love the unexpected hero trope!
The Sixth Sense (1999) is a straight up masterpiece. Also don’t really consider this one horror either, more suspense thriller but still amazing!
