Silence Over Coffee (short destiel drabble)
Cas take a moment to look at Dean Winchester. He’s holding this tenseness about him that he never seems to quite get rid of, a stance of masculinity that he grips with both hands to get through every day. Right now he’s pouring creamer in his coffee, and haphazardly tipping in sugar, not seeming to care if he uses too much. “I love you” Cas thinks, and Dean looks up almost as if he hears. Cas thinks about saying it like he’s thought so many times before, but the moment passes. Dean makes a joke, Cas doesn't get it. He laughs anyway.
Dean makes a joke, Cas laughs, and Dean hopes he can always make Cas laugh, it seemed like he was always the only one who could. He wants to spend his life, gently pulling laughs from Cas, a substitute for all the things he truly wants to say, a substitute for the kind of honesty that would shatter Dean.
Sometimes a part of Cas (maybe the part that's an angel, maybe the part that defied his angelic side) wants to take control of Dean's life. Play God in the most blasphemous way. He would steer Dean away from all that harms him, make sure he is warm and safe and loved, even if that love was facilitated by distance (as God or a father’s love always seems to be). But Cas isn't God, or a father. He is a messy excuse of a creature, and all he wants is to be up close. To run his eyes over every part of Dean, as if they were hands, and know him more every day.
Cas stares so much. It makes Dean uncomfortable at times, not because it's bad (not really) but because he doesn't know what to do with it. He can't look back for too long, the intensity burns him, but he can't say a word. He looks at his coffee cup instead, giving it all his misplaced attention as he takes a sip (its too sweet)....
When he looks up Cas is still looking, he’s so obvious it hurts. Truly it is not Cas’ gaze that bothers him, but the forever-watching eyes of everyone else. He’ll never be allowed to enjoy love, there are too many anchors, too many eyes, too many claws. Dean is a survivor, but he does not get to live.
The waitress comes over, one of the men is bold, flirty, nothing she hasn't seen before, but the other guy is unreadable, looking at the bold man with a look that could be love or hatred, depending on the angle. Neither of them orders food, just more coffee.
Cas watches Dean flirt with the waitress and wonders if his vessel is a barrier. If he forced his Grace into a beautiful woman would this be easier? It would. But for a long time now, this body has become Cas’ home. It isn't Jimmy Novak, it isn't a vessel, this is Castiel’s body. This is his home, and god (please), he wants Dean to love it as it is. He wants to beg for it, but he knows that's not what Dean needs, knows it wouldn't work. Maybe Cas should do it anyway, just to be honest. Just for something real between them.
I love you, I would go with you anywhere, even if it's just this diner, right now, drinking coffee.

I miss the soft whispering that used to accompany angels using their powers (like when Cas knocks Bobby out in 4x1). I wish they’d maintained it into the later seasons, even if it came and went sporadically.
It would’ve been really neat if the whispers accompanied Cas’s fighting or knocking people out, implying him drawing on the strength of Heaven and other angels, while disappearing when he heals Dean, implying Cas only uses his own power for that, marking the act as something personal and intimate.

Do you ever think, that after the empty took Cas, that Dean walks around the bunker or goes around driving and just sees little things that sparks memories or ideas of Cas?
I’m talking about like, Dean waking up early, and in the early-waking haze of his own mind, looks at his coat hanging on the door and just sees it as Castiel’s trenchcoat? That maybe he rubs his eyes and does a double take, so deliriously hopeful that it’ll really be that tan trenchcoat that he dreamt of last night?
That maybe he goes out on a drive, and will go past a little house, and in passing can see a beehive on a limb of the tree in their front yard or boxes of bees (which is what Dean definitely would’ve deemed them instead of the literal term) and will think back to how gooey and passionate Cas was about bee’s when he went nuts?
And maybe he’ll be walking around the bunker, and he’ll feel miracle swiping past his calves, and the feeling will remind him of the gusts of air that surrounded Cas when he flew into the same room?
And I like to think that, at some point and after some time of healing, Dean will walk into the dungeon and stand in that room, and in the open air thinks of Castiel’s face, and the wet gummy smile that shrouded his features, and the webbing of crows feet around his eyes. And maybe, in that same exact room in the still silence, he will mutter everything that reminded him of Castiel that day, and every time will end it with the same words.
“I love you too, Cas. And I think you always knew that.”

So we’re just not going to talk about the fact that in season four (4x1) Pam the psychic literally implies that whoever raised Dean from hell touched at least his upper, upper thigh, and probably higher? Therefore, Cas and Dean spent the forty years trying to escape hell falling in love and screwing, and Dean just had his memory erased or taken from him. There is no other explanation.

the first time dean and cas share a bed it feels like coming home for dean. it’s lovely but he’s also wildly conflicted. he feels like he doesn’t deserve this - rest, peace, companionship, and most certainly love. he doesn’t deserve the softness and intimacy of a true partnership, doesn’t deserve to wake up next to cas. cas who sits with him all night, cuddling and reading, even though he doesn’t sleep. he goes to bed with dean every night, can’t imagine leaving dean to fend for himself anymore against the chill of the night air or the nightmares. it takes years for dean to accept that cas is there, and he loves him for who he is. he isn’t weak for craving soft things, dean’s softness makes him stronger. cas loves how his eyes warm when dean wakes up and rolls over, sees cas holding him. he feels like someone, somewhere finally decided he deserves something good.

You know how in "Regarding Dean" Sam puts sticky notes on everything so Dean remembers the name?
Well, one day they sit in the bunker over a couple of beers and Sam retells that story (because now they can laugh about it) and Cas with his angelic roots thinks "that's a great idea actually, humans sometimes need help remembering even the simplest things"
So over the next couple of days, Dean finds weird little notes on the mirror ("I like your smile :)") and in his closet ("this shirt makes your eyes stand out") and he takes them down because it's kind of weird but also endearing so he keeps them in his back pocket (and if he takes them out to reread when he feels particularly down no one has to know)
And this goes on and on and the notes get longer and longer and you know Dean is like ":) Cas :) such a good friend who makes me feel good about myself :) so nice :)" until one day Sam comes out of the war room with three pieces of paper in his hands and an irritated expression and says "Dude I think Cas wrote you a love letter?" and that's when Dean realises

Sabriel Family Headcannons
Not married, sees no real point too. They love each other, that's enough.
A few months after they begin dating, a hunt has them dealing with a shifter. Another hunter had already dealt with it, but accidentally missed something.
The shifter's kid. Not really kid, but the one that was ordered to raise it.
Dean was busy on another hunt with Cas and Jack, so Mary goes with him.
They arrive just after the hunter blows town.
Since they're there, the two decide to check things out just in case.
Sam has to check the sewers, a bit annoyed. He can never win Rock Paper Scissors with his mom.
He found some of what the shifter shed.
He also found a little girl. That was unexpected.
He takes her back the hotel room.
Mary is concerned, but doesn't want to kill her.
She's only nine after all.
She hates it when she found out silver burns her.
Sam is thankfully able to convince her to let her stay.
They can't leave her in town, so she comes back to the bunker.
Dean is surprisingly ok with keeping her around. Jack immediately takes to her as well. Big brother energy.
Jack loves showing her his powers and is mostly their go to baby sitter. Mary and him take turns.
This goes on for a good few months.
Gabriel comes to visit Sam and the crew, only to find him reading to the little girl.
At first he can't bring himself to interrupt.
He just watches. Sam doing voices, making the girl laugh.
He'd never felt more in love.
Sam happens to glance up and see him.
Gabriel blushes and looks away, like he hadn't been silently watching him read to this girl.
Sam promised to finish the book later and picks the girl up to greet Gabriel.
At first the girl is shy, burying herself into Sam's shoulder.
She lightens a small bit after they kiss. Even more when Gabriel summons candy and gives her some.
He finds out her name is Sally.
From then on he's not just visiting Sam and his nephew.
There are days he'll come the bunker to find Jack and Sally snacking on the sugary cereal Sam disapproves of.
(side note: did not plan this intentionally, but now I see them dressing as Jack and Sally for Halloween)
Gabriel can't help but laugh when Jack and Sally say simultaneously "Don't tell Sam (Sammy)"
He'll stay until Sam gets back from the current hunt.
He shows off his illusions, Sally loving every bit of it.
She even makes requests based off her books and favorite shows.
She starts calling him Gabe like Sam does.
One day she goes to Gabriel, tugs on his pant leg, and asks him to make an illusion of what a kid of him and Sam wouldn't look like.
He starts. He doesn't know what to think.
He asks why and she explains that she can't shift unless she's seen the person she's trying to copy.
Sam comes in and hears it.
Both their hearts melt at her insistence.
Gabe obliges, making a vision of her with brown hair with a golden sheen. She has his nose, Sam's eye shape and color. She's the same height and has cute little dimples.
He really loved the one she has already.
Sally leaves to go shift in her room, thanking Gabe with a hug.
Sam and Gabe embrace, surprised but overjoyed to have a daughter.
I don't know why, but I find it really cute for these two to have a shifter daughter. I just feel it's a cool parallel to destiel and Jack. What do you think?
