Guess who's back on their SPN Bang bullshit? You guessed it! This guy!! Eyyyyyy!

Anyway. Gave a Reverse bang a whirl and had an absolute blast, thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I actually churned out not one, not two, but THREE fully finished illustrations for this bang which is quite frankly batshit insane but absolutely par for the course in my wackadoo universe.

Third [and last] of my three is this one: my Sabriel piece. For those of y'all who know me and my nonsense, Sabriel is one of my dearest ships. I almost always look for them as a pairing in my regular bang participation as like, a calling card on whether or not I'll want to claim something, so of course when it's a reverse I couldn't not do something with these two losers when I had the chance.

It was inevitable.

Thankfully, Celeste jumped onboard and crafted a gorgeous fic (rated M for violence and dark themes) from this. It didn't exactly go the way I had expected with my initial prompt but damn, did it really hit hard. It's dark and painful but ohhh, does it hurt so good. It was *chefs kiss* and I really hope you all enjoy some mega-hurt reading it.

under the cut I've included some preliminary sketches and some commentary, as well as details since apparently tumblr eats quality ಠ_ಠ

So I'm just gonna be real honest with this one, I banged this fucker out when I was forced to work a surprise double overnight at the hospital, so it was the quickest of all three of my pieces since I worked on it during my downtime. Ultimately I liked it so much I decided to use it for one of my pieces for the bang.

Picture it: me, exhausted, already eight hours into a shift and suddenly being saddled with an additional eight hours to slog through. Enter despair; but wait! Remember the tablet! Cry a little.

I cracked the baby open at midnight it all just spiraled from there.

I started with the rough sketches and then built up on top of those. I drew Sam first and I liked the whole "angel on the shoulder" concept, or the idea of Sam being sheltered by Gabe's wings, but that he maybe wasn't corporeal, or that Sam maybe wouldn't know he was there? It was a fun idea, anyway. So Gabe's shape came second.

After I got the base lines, I added the wing shape. This took a while, but I ended up getting a really really nice looking curve wrapping around Sam and forming a good shelter. I took away the under-sketching and drew in the hair lines after the wings went into place. I then cut out the excess gray and filled in an alternate background color for some contrast.

I went in for some skin highlight and some luminescence to the wings before adding some color and depth to the clothes. I then went over the initial line work and set the new layer on a super low intensity Gaussian blur for depth. Then I went over the wing lines with Procreate's lightpen brush and set that layer on a low intensity Gaussian blur.

I knew that this was going to be a multidimensional piece, so I wanted to make sure I got really severe differences between my lights and darks.

Once I was satisfied, I went in and added hair color and filled in some additional cool hues on Sam. I wanted him to really stand out, to be dark as possible. He is meant to be despair, not just with the pose, but with absolutely everything in the way he's depicted.

Once I was satisfied with that, I had the idea of adding veins crawling up his neck, like cracks in a lava floe. It clicked that it could represent the whole concept of corruption of innocence via the consumption of demon blood, and that really set my brain on full blast. (Plus the fact that it was rounding 3am at this point, which, hey, witching hour, babey)

I went with a really robust red and layered it with darker, less saturated reds and some black that looked like char or smoke. On top I added yellow and orange, along with a small glow effect to make it look like it cracked and split open like an actual lava floe. Once I was satisfied, I then added blood smear along his jaw and hand, because no corrupted Sammy is complete without his blood.

Once I finished with Sam, I had to move on to Gabe. Gabe was going to be trickier. Because he is an archangel, I wanted the whole "guardian angel on his shoulder, sheltering him from the corrupting effects of demon blood--he couldn't stop him, humans have free will--but he can lessen some of the pain and he hates to see him hurting" concept that was spinning in my brain to really be evident here.

So first, I added some lighter color on top of the base gray and did some layer effect goofin'. And while I liked it, it wasn't enough.

So I went a little harder.

I went back and adjusted the line art, changing it from dark to a light effect. Gabe is angelic, and although I liked the dynamic shadows I got from my original lines, I needed more from it. Changing the line layer effect from burn to add maximized the oomph enough that it definitely helped sell the whole angel concept.

I went back in and added in some veining along his cheek and neck to represent his grace shining through the cracks in the visual representation of a corporeal form, because although this depiction of him is human looking, he's not. It's an illusion, essentially, the human brain depicting what it can possibly fathom without melting out of the ears. (or something like that idek.)

I then went harder on the whole Grace-Angel-Power visuals and added a power wisp drifting up from his eye, which I think looks really cool in the final effect. (I did something similar with my Raphael piece.)

After I added that, I went back in for some final touches, putting in a source glow from the wings and an extra layer of glow-y ethereal-ness for Gabey's everything.
