Inevitable - part eight - The nightmares came true
He paced back and forth, smiling wider and wider, laughing louder and louder. At one point he stopped, still gesturing around. Until the frenzy of thoughts could not be kept inside any longer.
Dr Sunshine began musing, his voice melodic as usual, but with an unfamiliar touch.
"When did I become afraid of the dark?
Are my eyeballs just yet to adjust to seeing the light?
The room I'm in is still the same
The shadows have not rearranged it
No, the only thing that's changed is how I see at night
I fumble for the switch
And strap on infrareds and wish
For sunshine when the morning's somewhere else!..."
For just a line he lost that melodic note, but then it returned.
"But I can't change what time it is
Or dilate my irises
Only what I look at
And I'm looking at myself!...
I am not the sunshine
I am not the moon at night
Well, who else could I be
When I can hardly see?
I am not the sunshine
I am not the moon at night
I'm no one if I'm nowhere in between!"
Then Sunshine laughed to himself, a mad tone to it.
"When did I become afraid of the dark?
Was it when I left the cave and swore I'd never go back?
If we can't see each other, then there's no more use for hiding
I've decided I'll abide it
Why deny the color black?
I'm not a flower
Not a solar-powered calculator
Damn my eyes for seeing what's not there!..."
Once again, for a brief moment his nice tone ceased, before reappearing again. His eyes shined slightly in the faint light coming through the window, expression turning gentler, as if suddenly remembering something fond.
"I'll trade in vision for a practiced intuition!
'Til my fears come to fruition!
I'm not scared!~..."
But as fast as it came, as fast it was gone. The mad smile returned.
"I am not the sunshine
I am not the moon at night
Well, who else could I be
When I can hardly see?
I am not the sunshine
I am not the moon at night
I'm no one if I'm nowhere in between!"
He kept gesturing around. His voice was slowly turning into something of a scream.
"The future must know where you've been
The past predicts the state you're in...!
The present did and will not last!
Is, isn't, was, have, hasn't, has!..."
Suddenly his tone grew gentle as he motioned towards the mirror, expression almost pleading.
"All that I ask is, keep those empty frames
If nobody's in them, then no one is to blame...
For your self-portraits, sign another name
Well, who should I be then, if I'll never be the same?..."
The intonation suddenly changed once again, this time into the so very familiar, yet unfamiliar, melodic scream.
"I will be my sunshine!
I will be my moon at night!
Who else could I be
When I can't fucking see?!
I will be my sunshine!
I will be my moon at night!"
His voice cracked a little, and began quieting down.
"I'm nowhere now
There's no one now to... be﹏"
By now, Julie was very concerned. She wanted to check up on Dr Sunshine. But as she carefully opened the door and stepped through, he immediately dragged her to dance. Just as the last time, she did not oppose. Even if for just a while, he appeared like a sane man.
"And if dreams can come true
What does that say about nightmares...?"
Sunshine mused as he spinned along with Julie, eventually leaning extremely close to her. It was almost like a hug. And he finally whispered...
"I'll stay awake tonight..."
For a while they stayed motionless. Finally, they subtly pulled away from each other.
– Julie, my dear, I'd like to ask for your assistance with a certain matter... – Dr Sunshine said, a slightly ominous smirk on his lips.
– What should I do, doctor?
He grabbed a knife from a table, handed it to her and looked into her eyes. As he did so, a shiver ran down her spine. His gaze was absent. Wild. Unfamiliar.
– ...Kill me – Sunshine replied so casually. Like it was a normal thing.
Julie's eyes widened, and her heart started racing. What now?
– W... what...? – she stammered out, still not quite believing her senses.
– Kill me – he repeated.
– I... N-no, doctor, I... I can't...
– Yes, you can, Julie. Kill me.
– Doctor, I... N-no, it is wrong...
– It is not wrong. I asked for it myself. Kill me.
It carries on like this for a while. She keeps refusing, he keeps insisting, but by no means is he forcing her. She cannot handle this thought alone. She cannot bring herself to do it.
That is when Annica returned. The daughter of death appeared behind Julie's back, carrying an old axe, its silver blade stained with dry blood. Her eyes are feral.
She took a swing. With an unknown force, Julie's body moved. The knife was now in Dr Sunshine's chest.
He let out a laugh as he fell to his knees. He then looked up at Julie. His smile was still mad and unfamiliar, but that small spark of humanity shone through his eyes.
– Thank you... – the scientist muttered out before collapsing on the floor.
Julie's mind is screaming, thoughts running a mile a second. She can barely hear Annica laugh sinisterly.
Her legs gave up. She started sobbing as she sat there, right beside his dead body.
The sun began to rise.
***
Cotard entered the lobby, seeing Julie sitting at the small table there, her expression thoughtful and with a tinge of sadness.
– Hello, miss Julie – he greeted.
– Ah... Good day, Cotard... Are you looking for Dr Sunshine?
– Yes, I am. Is he available right now?
– I'm sorry... – she stood up from her seat and walked over to the side of the table, finally raising her gaze to look Cotard right in the face. – ...He's dead.
Cotard didn't even look all that surprised.
– Dr Sunshine is dead? What happened?
– I... – Julie looked down again, struggling to let the truth through her throat. – I killed him...
– Oh? But why? You liked him, didn't you?
She turned around, facing away from him, her eyes shiny with tears, sorrow twisting her lips.
– ...I loved him.
– Then why did you murder him? – Cotard asked, despite knowing the answer very well.
– He... – her voice was trembling slightly. – He asked me to... And then something helped me to fulfill his wish...
– Ah... I see. I shalln't be taking any more of your time then. Goodbye, miss Julie.
And without a word more, Cotard left, leaving the assistant alone as she began sobbing again.
***
Mr Capgras was standing in front of the secondhand vanity that he once gifted to Dr Sunshine, tracing his fingers along the mirror frame.
– And if dreams can come true... – he mused to himself. – What does that say about nightmares?
Capgras stared into his own eyes for a moment before a faint smile tugged at his lips.
– I'll stay awake tonight...
He then left the room, leaving it in complete darkness.
A reflection of shadow glistened inside the mirror.

I’m still thinking about Tilda and her relations to my version of Elisabet. Like, you don’t get a lot about how Lis felt other than disappointment and anger about Tilda’s possible involvement in stealing a copy of GAIA. I mean she said she didn’t… but she’s also a spy. And like that voice explaining Zero Dawn in the old Zenith base of operations sounded like a modulated version of Tilda’s voice- the way it pauses and drawls out the vowels is the same, I think. Just deeper? Modulated, perhaps?
Like there’s no way Lis actually believed she didn’t. She knows better than anyone what how cunning Tilda is and how intelligent and savvy she is with manipulating people. It makes her a great spy, but perhaps not a great person. And she’s had time to cook.
Like, how did they break up? Why? Was it amicable?
Tilda spent a thousand years regretting it and regretting that she left Lis behind… but what did Lis feel? Does she still hold some affection for Tilda? When she realizes Tilda’s fucked up (BETA, I’M STILL PISSED ABOUT HOW BADLY THE ZENITHS FUCKED BETA UP) and the extent of the damage, what would happen?
Did she also regret it? Did she think that Tilda helped with the betrayal? Anyways, here’s a possible snippet for the far (heh) future of the fic:
Elisabet stood there, facing her past in a way she hadn’t thought possible. Hadn’t thought will ever be possible again.
She had thought this chapter- this relationship- of her life was closed. When Aloy had recounted her experience in the facility, Elisabet hadn’t truly thought about the implications outside the mind numbing fact that she has another clone-daughter. But then she had met Beta, and it was okay, better than okay, that she had another daughter.
And then there’s this. This- her- there she is, floating in the air and looking as stunned as Lis herself feels. Tilda van de Meer.
“Elisabet?”
God, even the sound of her voice back bittersweet memories. All of those coffee dates and the art galleries and science expos… and the moment Tilda broke her heart. Elisabet swallows, remembering the way Tilda had looked her in the eyes and told her that it couldn’t work out- that it won’t ever work- because of the nature of Tilda’s job. The lie in her eyes and that tremor in her steady hands, Elisabet saw them.
“How is this possible?” Tilda whispers, white clad and shimmery arms armored with the Far Zenith shields reaching out to Elisabet. She stops halfway, as if she’s afraid that Elisabet will disappear the moment Tilda touches her.
“Cryo.” Elisabet says, still staring at Tilda. For the Old One, if she can even claim that title anymore, it has only been two, three years, since they broke things off. Lis hadn’t had time to grieve that relationship properly, having avoided the grief by throwing herself into work and fending off Ted’s lawsuits. Then, the Faro Plague happened… and she barely had time to grieve what she thought was Tilda’s death when it was reported that the ship had blown up on the way to Sirius.
Why are all of her exes so damn beautiful?
The Voice croons in restrained amusement, presence warming Elisabet’s back as the Old One straightens and draws herself up for a long over due conversation.
“That’s- That’s wonderful. I-” Tilda hesitantly, reverently, took Lis’ hands in hers. Elisabet let her, knowing she shouldn’t but all the same wanting the familiar touch. “Elisabet, I spent- I spent the last thousand years regretting how we ended. I regretted leaving you here to die with the rest of them and how we left things back then. But now… now, I get to have a second chance.”
Elisabet wants- she-
Elisabet rips her hands out of Tilda’s grasp.
“I don’t want to hear it. I- I thought you died.”
“The… the transmission.” Tilda’s voice gains a modicum of hope. “That wasn’t my idea, but they had thought it necessary. I thought you died, too. You should have come with us, then, then you wouldn’t have had to be frozen for a millennia.”
“That’s rich, coming from you. What was it, Tilda? The thing that you said when we broke things off? Oh, right, that “the nature of my work will make this difficult.” Well, the nature of my work made it difficult.” Her tone is bitter, twisted in hurt and heartbreak. It makes Tilda flinch.
A part of Elisabet, that unkind part she finds in herself in her darkest moments, purrs in satisfaction.
“Lis, you know that I hadn’t meant it like that-”
“No?” Elisabet shoots back, mouth pulling down. Aloy inches away from the two, the rest of the group watching the exchange like a riveting match of machine strike. Sylens rolls his eyes and wanders off into the lab. Elisabet sees all of this, but it doesn’t matter to her. All she saw was the woman that had broken her heart over and over again. “Even if it wasn’t what you meant, you still chose to leave, Tilda. To preserve yourself, if nothing else. You were scared, of how serious we were getting.”
Tilda laces her unfairly elegant fingers together, voice quiet as she agrees. “Yes… I suppose I was.”
“Didn’t you think, for one second, that I was afraid too?”
“… No. I hadn’t thought of that.”
“You betrayed me. You tried to steal GAIA. You lied to me about it. I saw the recording of the reception at the Far Zenith headquarters. I know what your voice sounds like, even if it was modulated.”
The words spill out, faster and more hurt than Aloy had ever heard.
“Lis-” Tilda floats closer, but Elisabet takes a step back. “I- won’t do it this time. I know… I know I disappointed you. I know I broke your heart.”
The Zenith swallows as Elisabet’s heavy gaze landed once more on her face, hurt and disappointment hitting Tilda like a hammer on cold metal. Elisabet’s quiet voice slides in between her ribs, stabbing at Tilda’s slow beating heart and splintering it.
“You chose yourself. Above the world… above me.”
“Please, Elisabet, allow me another chance.”
Elisabet laughs a short, mirthless exhale.
“Even now, you still haven’t even thought to apologize.”
“I’m sorry.” Tilda immediately says. “What can I do? What can I do to apologize? To make it up to you? Anything, Lis. Name it, and it’s yours.”
Elisabet grits her teeth, Tilda’s words reminding her unpleasantly of Ted. But if her relationship with Tilda had taught her anything, it’s that she can use this. Elisabet hates herself for thinking it, but her worry for Beta overrides any moral obligations she might have had.
“Get my daughter back,” she says. “And I’ll think about it.”
“Okay. Alright. Just- I will.”
Elisabet stares at Tilda, at the determined, desperate set of her old flame’s shoulders.
Because she’s not hurt enough, because Lis had hurt more, Elisabet couldn’t help but throw her words into Tilda’s face.
“If the Odyssey actually blew up, I think you would have been worth the tears I shed.”
With that, Elisabet hardens her heart once more and turns away. She doesn’t see the devastation that crosses Tilda’s face, nor does she see the way it crumples from the normally impassive face Tilda sports.
—-
Aloy leans against the table, watching Elisabet absently sifting through data.
“You alright?”
Even though Aloy gentled her voice, Elisabet still startles like a rabbit.
“Ah. Sorry you had to see that, kiddo.” Her mother sends a rueful smile her way. Aloy shrugs, all but silently shaking Elisabet and asking if she’s okay with her eyes alone.
“I’m okay.” Elisabet smiles again, a little more genuine this time. “I’m just worried.”
“About Beta and GAIA?” Aloy asks, nodding. “Don’t worry, I’ll get them back.”
“And about you too, silly.” Elisabet rounds the table and pulls Aloy into a hug.
“Make sure you come back,” she orders her daughter, chin resting on Aloy’s armored shoulders. Not the best for hugs, but Elisabet could give less of a fuck right now. “I want both of you to come back safe and sound, understand?”
“Yeah.” Aloy hugs her back. Elisabet squeezes her daughter tighter, and lets go. “I’ll be okay.”
“You’d better be. If you scare me like that ever again,” - the image of Aloy, pale and injured after the explosion flashes through Lis’ head. “Just- don’t, okay, sweetie?”
“Yeah. Sorry.” Aloy guiltily apologizes, remembering the exhausted state Elisabet was in, looking after her with little sleep. The drawn face coupled with the dark smudges underneath her mother’s eyes had Aloy making sure she was a little more careful on the field.
Elisabet presses a kiss on her forehead, patting the Nora huntress on the shoulder.
“And be careful around Tilda. She’s still- she’s good, at fooling people into thinking she’s on their side.”
“Speaking from experience, mom?”
“Yes,” she sighs, smiling at Aloy’s blatant curiosity. “I’ll tell you later. But, if we’re being honest, I think you have a better eye for figuring out those kinds of deception than I ever was.”

Inevitable - part seven - Disaster overture
I know you didn't read part six. Here it is.
Dr Sunshine tried his best to work as usual, but was not very successful. He couldn't concentrate at all, hands shaky, fingers kind of thick. The papers kept slipping away from his grip, and if not for Julie a few units of glassware would be lost. After dropping his notes for the nth time today, he couldn't hold himself back anymore.
– FUCK IT! – he yelled in a fit of rage, the frustration in his tone and expression almost tangible. He then took a deep breath, trying to calm down at least a bit. – I-I'm sorry, I... need to clear my mind... – and with that said he stormed out of the lab, then the building.
Sunshine decided to ask Mr Capgras about it. He knew some very interesting trivia, so he may know something about this as well.
Hearing the shopkeeper's bell ring, the antique merchant perked up on his spot behind the desk. Seeing his old friend, his smile widened even more.
– Ah, greetings, Sunshine – Capgras asked. – Is there anything you need from this old man?
– Actually, yes – Dr Sunshine replied. There was the tiniest hint of panic in his voice. – You know a lot of random facts regarding various myths and legends, so I figured out you'd know something about this too...
– And what is "this"? – the merchant motioned for the scientist to grab a stool and sit down with him. He did so.
– So... there are... three women. And they have laced dresses, and appear out of nowhere...
– Hm... Oh, I think I know what you might mean! – Mr Capgras replied as he searched for something in a drawer.
– So what is it?
– They might be the daughters of disaster.
– But what the hell is up with them?
– They are supernatural beings, neither alive, nor dead – he explained as he took out some old illustrations. – There's three of them. Annata, the daughter of change... – he placed the first paper on the desk, on it a picture of the blue lady. – ...Dukkha, the daughter of fate... – on the second one was an illustration of the woman with a third eye tattooed on her forehead. – ...and Annica, the daughter of death – he finally placed the third one down, on it a picture of the black-eyed girl, holding an axe. – No one knows what their presence may mean.
That was it. These mysterious women that disturbed him so much, they were the daughters of disaster. No one may know what their presence might mean for sure, but he had a strong feeling that it's nothing good.
– I... I see... – Dr Sunshine mumbled out.
– I've told you all I know.
– I-I'll be going now... Goodbye, Mr Capgras... – the scientist attempted to sound calm as he walked towards the door, but his body language gave away the anxiety he was feeling.
– Goodbye, doctor.
With a grim attitude, Sunshine returned to the lab. Julie was waiting for him there. He sat down in his chair, gazing off into the void.
– Is everything okay, doctor? – Julie asked.
– Yes, Julie, I... I just need to think alone...
– ...Should I leave?
– If you'd be so nice...
– Should you need anything, I'll be in the lobby – she said and stopped in the doorway to look back at him with a worried expression, before leaving and closing the door.
He couldn't see her look, he didn't face away from the wall for even a second. Having to do this pained him so much, but it was for her own good. The problem is his alone. She doesn't deserve to deal with his burdens.
He had a lot to process, but making any sense of it all seemed almost impossible. For several hours he sat there, alone, in grave silence, thinking.
The sun began to set.
Even then everything seemed so twisted.
– What are you thinking about? All the changes that are about to happen, perhaps? – a familiar voice resounded, carrying that unforgettable tone of melancholy. Annata. When her words reached his ears, his eyes widened slightly in realization, as everything became clear.
He can't run from it forever.
This is his destiny.
This is inevitable.
He got up from his seat and turned around, facing all three daughters and just stared at them blankly for a while.
– ...Why? Why must fate be like this? – he finally asked.
– Because it's like this! – Dukkha snapped at him, losing all composture in a moment. – You needed way too much time to even acknowledge that fate exists, and yet you still doubt it! Isn't my existence enough?! No, for you all it's never enough! Even if I straight-up told you your destiny and what you would do, you wouldn't listen to me! No one ever listens to me! Screw divination, thankless hell of a job!
– There's only one thing everyone's fate has in common, and it is death! – Annica said as she leaned closer to him, her expression seemed to show even more craziness than usual. – Everyone is approaching the very same end, same goes for you, and Julie, and Capgras, and Cotard, and everyone else! Many are nearing this finale right now, and you might just be one of them!
As she listened to the other two daughters, Annata's expression of permanent worry seemed to deepen. They all took a step back, away from him. There was no point in rejecting it any longer. One must accept one's destiny.
The lab was filled with the quiet hum of some scientific machinery. In the center of the room was a man surrounded by three beings, one of them right by his side. This mad scientist was no other than Dr Sunshine. While he stood there, he moved along to the music inside his head and mused, his voice gentle and melodic, mixing with Annata's as one.
"What if the wind caught up with me?
Started to change when I did...
Would I blow out like a light?
Or like a kite, fly away?..."
Every move he made, the daughter of change repeated.
"What if the fear of darkness gave
Way to the fear of color?
Would you live in black and white?
Or rest your eyes through the day?..."
Fear slipped onto her face, as she moved to the side, unable to utter another word. Dr Sunshine gave up on the melodic tone and kept musing.
"And if dreams can come true
What does that say-hey about nightmares?!
I'll stay awake tonight..."
And he finally snapped back at Dukkha, his voice harsher and louder, expression almost mocking.
"Cry my name!
Remind my brain
Of my identity!
Well, I'm not gonna listen
I'm not my volition, I'm-
Shananananananana free will!
Would you blame me for riding this train
Right by my destiny?!
Ah, prove I can crack, ah
Loose from track, ah
Shananananananana free will!"
As he spoke the daughter of fate clenched her teeth. But then she chimed in, her tone more melodic in contrast to Sunshine's.
"Rolling my third eye into the back...
Of my head and squinting through the black!..."
And with a motion of the hand, the third eye on her forehead closed.
"Saw no center, saw not where it lead...
It's times like this that make me wish that
I wish that I were dead
I don't wish I were dead
But somebody's got to go!..."
Then Annica took the lead, a mad smile on her face, eyes wild.
"I wanna make my murder look like a suicide!
But they'll all know, they'll all know
They'll all know that the body's mine!
I wanna go anonymous to identify!
But they'll all know, they'll all know, they'll all know, they'll all know
They'll all know that the body's mine!"
Sunshine shook his head, trying to stay strong and stand with himself, but it was becoming harder. He continued, keeping his previous timbre.
"Divide by one and find I'm one less than the one I was
So how many people am I?
Now that I keep 'em in my
Shananananananana memory, still I"
As he turned to the mirror of the secondhand vanity, his tone became smoother for just one line, before returning to the previous.
"Check in the mirror to see how I look, I look
Different in different ways!
Ah, you do the math, ah
Who's looking back, ah
Shananananananana that's not me!"
He pointed accusingly to his own reflection, the three daughters of disaster doing the same. Then Dukkha carried on. With every word she spoke and heard, her smile was becoming wilder, the white of her dress filling with all colors in a very chaotic way.
"Carving my initials in the back...
Of my hand in case of losing track!...
I forgot, remember to forgive...
It's times like this that make me wish that
I wish that I could live
I don't wish I could live
But somebody's got to stay!..."
Annica took the lead again, but this time Dr Sunshine joined in, their voices uniting.
"I wanna make my murder look like a suicide!
But they'll all know, they'll all know
They'll all know that the body's mine!
I wanna go anonymous to identify!
But they'll all know, they'll all know, they'll all know, they'll all know, they'll all know...
All know it's mine!
Ahh!..."
The daughters moved around the lab, each in her own unique way. Seeing such chaos unfold, paired with everything that happened earlier, awakened something in him. Sunshine smiled to himself and returned to the previous, harsh yet melodic scream.
"And if dreams can come true
What does that say about nightmares?!
I'll stay awake toni-i-i-i
Ahh, uh, ahh, uh!
Ahh, uh, ahh, uh!
Ahh, uh, ahh, uh!
Ahh, uh, ahh, uh!
Ahh, uh, ahh, uh!
Ahh, uh, uh!"
And he joined voices with Annica again, as Dukkha and Annata mumbled in the background.
"I wanna make my murder look like a suicide!
Kill me...
Kill me...
But they'll all know, they'll all know
They'll all know that the body's mine!
Kill me...
Kill me...
I wanna go anonymous to identify!
Kill me...
Kill me...
But they'll all know, they'll all know, they'll all know,
They'll all know that the body's MINE!"
All four started screaming alternately, and nothing but a cacophony of desperation could be heard.
"AHH!"
"AHH!"
"AHH, AHH, AHH!"
"AHH!"
"AHH, AHH!"
"Ahhh﹏"
Dr Sunshine held his head in his hands, taking deep, a little erratic breaths. The daughters of disaster seem to have left.
But he wasn't fine anymore.
