ARYA STARK AND THE GODS ❦ BOURNE FOR THE GOD OF DEATH

Thirty different gods stood along the walls, surrounded by their little lights. The Weeping Woman was the favorite of old women, Arya saw; rich men preferred the Lion of Night, poor men the Hooded Wayfarer. Soldiers lit candles to Bakkalon, the Pale Child, sailors to the Moon-Pale Maiden and the Merling King. The Stranger had his shrine as well, though hardly anyone ever came to him. Most of the time only a single candle stood flickering at his feet. The kindly man said it did not matter. "He has many faces, and many ears to hear."

The Many-Faced God, also known as Him of Many Faces, is a deity worshipped by the Faceless Men, a guild of assassins established in the Free City of Braavos. The tale of the guild's beginnings centers around a figure of unknown origins, the first Faceless Man, who heard the prayers of the slaves to their various gods of death and came to conclude they all prayed to the same god "with a hundred different faces", the Many-Faced God, and that he was "that god's instrument".

This belief came to be reflected in the Guild's temple, which has a large public sanctuary that contains idols of thirty death gods. The religious order refills its pool of black water with a poison, so that drinking from it leads to a painless death. Visiting worshippers light candles to their god, then drink from the fountain using a stone cup, then go lie in one of the alcoves. Others take advantage of special alcoves, called "dreaming couches", which have special candles that bring visions of the past, for a sweet and gentle death.

Followers of Him of Many Faces consider death to be part of the natural order of things and a merciful end to suffering. The guild will agree to kill anyone in the known world, for a price, considering this contract to be a sacrament of their god. The price is always high or dear, but within means of the person if they are willing to make the sacrifice. The cost of their services also depends on the prominence and security of the target.

The High Valyrian words associated with the cult and its assassins are valar morghulis, or "all men must die", and its traditional response, valar dohaeris, or "all men must serve". This philosophy runs deep. Members are made to forsake their identities for the service of the Many-Faced God, and may only assassinate targets they have been hired to kill. They are not allowed to choose who is worthy of the "gift" by themselves.

I know a lot of people see this line from Aemond as cocky, overconfident, and delusional. Which I understand because we all know what happens in the battle above the gods eye.

But I also understand why he says this because that man rides the biggest fucking dragon Vhagar. She is a conquerors dragon and she is a war dragon. She is a advantage. So yes he’s going to feel like he’s on top of the world and think that he can take on anyone because he’s bonded with vhagar.

Also he’s a Targaryen. Confidence, arrogance, and fighting, it’s all in his blood. He’s acting and showing that he’s the blood of the dragon and is willing to take down anyone with vhagar.

On the twenty-second day of the fifth moon of the year 130 AC

Daemon ripped off his nephew’s helm and drove the sword down into his blind eye, so hard the point came out the back of the young prince’s throat. Half a heartbeat later, the dragons struck the lake, sending up a gout of water that was said to have been as tall as Kingspyre Tower. Neither man nor dragon could have survived such an impact, the fisherfolk who saw it said. Prince Aemond had only turned twenty.

The end came when a crossbow bolt nicked one of the dragon’s eyes. Half-blind, and maddened by a dozen lesser wounds, Dreamfyre spread her wings and flew straight up at the great dome above in a last desperate attempt to break into the open sky.

Helaena Targarye threw herself from her window in Maegor’s Holdfast to die impaled upon the iron spikes that lined the dry moat below. Helaena’s end had been mercifully swift: one of the spikes took her through the throat and she died without a sound. She was but one-and-twenty.

The Blood Wyrm’s jaws closed about Vhagar’s neck, her black teeth sinking deep into the flesh of the larger dragon. Even as Vhagar’s claws raked her belly open and Vhagar’s own teeth ripped away a wing, Caraxes bit deeper, worrying at the wound as the lake rushed up below them with terrible speed.

Come vibe with me about Theon and weirwood imagery and the weir walker theory!

Awhile ago, I did a deep dive into David Lightbringer's videos and I truly enjoyed his theory about the origin of the Others linked here: Symbolism of the Others: Weir Walkers. In brief, his theory is that the Others were the original spirits of the Weirwoods. They were a form of Sidhe (fae) who were violently evicted from their weirwood homes. He has a lot of theories as to how that happened- some of which involves the sacrificing of children or children of the forest- but the basic idea is that the weirwood trees were once green trees that were corrupted and transformed into the red and white trees we see in the series through the eviction of the Others:

The emptied-out white weirwood trees then became wight trees, like corpses with most of their minds and souls removed… and in fact that’s exactly what the weirwood trees look like, with their bleeding, anguished faces, bone-white bark, and leaves like blood hands. They look like dead people; like zombie trees, like wight trees. These hollowed out zombie trees have since become a home for a new hivemind of greenseers – many of whom are humans like Bloodraven and Bran... (David Lightbringer.)

What I find touching about this theory in regards to Theon is how his life seems to be mirroring that of the weirwood trees. Like the trees, he's evicted or stolen from his original home, the Iron Islands. But through Ramsay’s torture, his very identity and essence is also stolen, leaving him a shell of what he once was. Weirwoods are skinchanged in the novels and in a symbolic sense, so is Theon. Theon’s actual skin is removed through flaying and amputation and he is starved and beaten. This horrific torture forces Theon to accept the persona of Reek into his body (like a skinchanger entering a weirwood) and reject Theon. After the torture, Theon's physical form as "Reek" even starts to resemble a Heart Tree. He transitions from the "lean, dark youth of nineteen who found everything amusing," in AGOT to the "white haired starveling" of ADWD. This is the most evident when we first meet him again in Reek I in ADWD:

When he raised a hand, he was shocked to see how white it was, how fleshless. Skin and bones, he thought. I have an old man’s hands. (ADWD) “His hair’s gone white and he is three stone thinner, aye, but this is no serving man. Have you forgotten?” The crookback lord looked again and gave a sudden snort. “Him? Can it be? Stark’s ward. Smiling, always smiling.” “He smiles less often now,” Lord Ramsay confessed. “I may have broken some of his pretty white teeth.” (ADWD) “There’s blood on your mouth,” Ramsay observed. “Have you been chewing on your fingers again, Reek?” (ADWD)

So he goes from a dark youth- a "green" boy- like the original green of the weirwood leaves and the green of the sea to a corpse like figure with white hair and white bony hands. He has just eaten the rat so he has blood on his mouth, as Ramsay remarks. Ramsay also asks him if he has been chewing on his fingers again, indicating that there may still be blood on his hands from the rat. But the question makes us imagine bloody, flayed fingers as well.

Theon also has metaphorical blood on his hands because of the murders he committed or allowed- particularly those of the miller's children- which connects with the idea of sacrificial children playing a part in making the Others or evicting them from the trees. It is even more layered when you remember that Theon himself was brought to Winterfell as a potential child sacrifice.

Ramsay also mentions that he broke Theon's teeth, which calls to mind a bleeding mouth- like the bleeding CARVED mouth of the heart tree. Ramsay has essentially carved Theon into Reek with his flaying knife.

During Theon's godswood scene in the A Ghost in Winterfell chapter of ADWD, a red weirwood leaf falls onto Theon’s head, completing the imagery of Theon as a Heart Tree and giving him the "weirwood stigmata," which a lot of other characters share at different times in the novel such as Arya, Catelyn, Dany, Jon, etc. It is also so interesting that Theon thinks of himself as a ghost in this chapter- Theon is like a ghost who use to live inside his tortured and abused body just as the Others are like ghosts that used to live inside the corrupted Weirwood Trees.

I've always loved Theon's godswood scene, but I've also always wondered why the weirwood trees are so intrinsically connected to Theon (at least in my mind.) I mean, it does make sense that they would be- he did grow up in Winterfell and many important things happen to him in the godswood throughout his life. And obviously, there is also the connection with Bran who may be reaching out to him through the Heart Tree. But these two connections to the weirwoods- growing up at Winterfell and Bran- didn't completely encapsulate the incredible, almost empathetic? bond I feel Theon has with the weirwoods and "the old gods."

But then this theory- that the Others came from the trees- did seem to be the last piece that made that scene as powerful as it is to me. It's beautiful to think of Theon- who has been othered (Othered) all his life and who has essentially become a wighted version of himself- is standing in front of these wighted corpse trees praying to be Theon again. And he feels so recognized- so understood by these trees that are also seeking to have their spirits returned to them.

They know me. They know my name. (ADWD)

It makes it all the more moving and beautiful to me.

Still not over the fact that Viserys had literally zero reasons to have children with Alicent if he always intended for Rhaenyra to be his ultimate heir. Like how the fuck did he not see any of the eventual problems coming? What was the fucking logic behind him having FOUR more children with Alicent three of which (who could’ve guessed) ended up being male, if he always intended for Rhaenyra to be his ultimate fucking heir?? What THE FUCK did he think was gonna happen after his death? That his three sons would’ve been like “alright, I guess we just exist now, let’s give up on our rights on the crown in favor of our older sister we were never even close with”???

If he wanted a prostitute, he could’ve bought one at literally any point. No one would bat an eye on him having some illegitimate children, especially now that he is a widower and shit. He could’ve had any woman at all, as many as he wanted, whenever he wanted. And yet he still chose to marry Alicent and have legitimate children with her. I genuinely don’t understand the reasoning behind all that. Viserys was the root of all the fucking problems.

Beltane & May New Moon Ritual Script - 2024

Here's the script I put together for my coven's combined Beltane and New Moon ritual that I'm leading this weekend! There were some scheduling issues with the UU Church we meet at and this date was the only one that really worked, so we decided to combine both into one since they're both close to the date and have similar correspondences! If you're using the script, please tag me in it!

Meditation

Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Feel the air come in through your nose and out through your mouth. Take a moment to center yourself.

It’s a warm spring afternoon. The sky is cloudless as the Sun shines above, illuminating the prairie you stand in. The earth feels warm and tender underneath your bare feet. Wiggle your toes in the grass and feel the wildflowers in various colors tickle your toes and ankles. The fresh breeze smells of roses and honeysuckle, and birds chirp in nearby shrubs.

You spot a circle of people partaking in a dance before you. Colorful dresses and tunics flow in the wind, and flower crowns of daisies and daffodils sit on their heads. They cheer and sing, their voices floating on the wind. As you approach, those nearest you smile kindly and open their arms to allow you to join in. You enter and hold their hands, quickly feeling joy and warmth. You turn with them, the energy transferring from hand to hand.

Your hands release at the height of the energy, and you each dance independently. You use all the power you gathered to dance. Shaking your arms and legs, headbanging, spinning around, whatever brings you the most joy. You dance and dance until you’re worn out, then lie down in the grass and stare at the sky.

You regain your breath, breathing in and out deeply. As the Sun begins to set, the sky has turned from bright blue to shades of pink, purple, and orange. The Sun God starts to depart, taking the youthful energy of the day with Him. The Moon Goddess now enters, bringing the serenity of the night sky and stars. The people you danced with under the Sun lie on the ground with you, softly humming a hymn to welcome Her presence.

The Moon in Her New phase doesn’t shine as brightly as She does during her Full phase. Instead, she offers just a slice of light, letting the constellations and other celestial bodies take their time in the spotlight. Despite Her hidden figure, you can still feel Her energy, a soft feeling of abundance, protection, and love.

As you lie in the grass, think about what you wish to achieve in the coming weeks. What will be the best way to reach them, and what reward will lie in the end? The Moon will grant your wish as long as you put in the effort to achieve it. Don’t forget that you have the power to succeed, and She offers her assistance.

You gently close your eyes as you lie in the grass after setting your intentions. It is time for rest and recovery after a long day with the God and Goddess. You are safe from all danger, protected by those Above and Below. You drift off into a reverie, awaiting what the next day brings.

As we end this meditation, center yourself and take another deep breath. Feel your feet ground you as you return to this plane. Once you are ready, slowly open your eyes.

The Story of Beltane & the May New Moon

Beltane, also known as May Day, Walpurgis Night, and Floralia, marks the halfway point between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. The name and festival Beltane are Gaelic in origin, which comes from the words “Bel,” meaning “bright,” and “Tene,” meaning fire, along with the God Belenus, who represents Fire. Beltane is considered the oldest holiday in Gaelic tradition, dating back to at least the 10th century.

In modern Pagan practices, Beltane represents the Sacred Union between the Mother Goddess and Horned God, conceiving the Harvest Child. The phallic maypole and yonic wreath of flowers and ribbons represent their Rite. As such, Beltane has become a time for fertility and sexuality, and it’s also associated with creativity and love. Bonfires represent fertility, protection, and the longer days of summer, and crops, beauty, and creativity continue to grow.

Beltane is also associated with fairies of Gaelic lore, specifically the aos sí. The veil is thinnest at this time, much like at Samhain, allowing them to pass through. The aos sí were appeased with offerings of food and drink to prevent their troublesome natures and in hopes that they would grant wishes.

Along with Beltane, we also celebrate the New Moon of May tonight. The New Moon is a time for setting intentions, manifestations, and new beginnings. It’s the beginning of the lunar cycle, where the moon is absent from the sky, and the stars shine brighter. The Moon’s energy is at one of Her highest, and it’s the perfect time for spellwork.

The May New Moon is in Taurus, representing creativity, sensuality, and abundance. These values align perfectly with Beltane, creating the perfect storm for intentions in these realms. It’s time to focus on achieving long-lasting results, especially those concerning money. However, the Earth element of Taurus reminds us to stay grounded and practical.

With Beltane and the Taurus New Moon coinciding near each other, the energy is high, promoting growth both in nature and within you. Take this time to focus on the pleasures in life and the abundance around you.

Cone of Power

Now, for the Cone of Power. Stand if you’re able, with hands linked. Left hand under, right hand over. As we chant, visualize the energy swirling around us and channeling into the sky.

The Maypole Dance

((AUTHOR'S NOTE: I specifically wrote this section to accompany the song "Bard Dance" from the Baldur's Gate 3 soundtrack and this dance pattern. You do not have to use this same source material, and I encourage you to give the ritual your own spin! I'm simply copying/pasting exactly how my script is written.))

As I mentioned earlier, dancing around the Maypole is a Beltane tradition that dates back to before the Middle Ages in Europe, and we’ll be bringing that tradition to life today! Everyone grab a ribbon from the Maypole, and I’ll get my metronome set up.

Set the metronome app for 112 BPM and wait until everyone has a ribbon.

We’re going to split into two groups, 1 and 2.

Count out groups 1 and 2 (every other person) and start the metronome.

This is the tempo we’ll be using for the dance, in counts of four: four beats per measure and four measures for each dance phase. I’ll count it out like this as we dance.

Count "1 2 3 4 / 2 2 3 4 / 3 2 3 4 / 4 2 3 4" along to the tempo.

For the dancing, group 1 will walk to the pole for two measures and then walk back out for two measures.

Give an example with measure counting.

Group 2 will now do the same.

Give an example with measure counting.

Then, we turn clockwise for four measures and counterclockwise for four. And then the dance repeats! Do we want to try it without music and then start with the music?

As this is the New Moon, we’ll set intentions, but this time on ribbons for a Beltane twist! If anyone would like a copy, I have a guide to ribbon colors and their meanings. Allow time for people to get/cut ribbons and grab pens.

Feel the ribbon in your hands. Think of what the color means to you and your goals for this lunar cycle phase. Imagine the ribbon tightly wound around a physical representation of your intention, a present of joy and success ready to be opened. Bonfires are another Beltane tradition used as a method of protection and purification. Historically, Gaelic people walked livestock between two bonfires and sprinkled ashes over crops. The Fire element is also associated with new beginnings and transformation, which makes it the perfect method to activate intentions! As you toss your ribbon into the fire, visualize its Sacred power bringing your intention to life!
