I put out a new chill, dreamy instrumental, inspired by ancient mythology, Sappho of Lesbos, and the swirling emotions of limerance and fear when new love calls.
This is from a play called Nuit for which I am composing a soundtrack, a really cool combon of hilarious skits and breathtaking dance choreo. This is written for a dance between two Lesbian characters, a pivotal and tender moment where they realize their unspoken longing. Hope some of you can see it in Montreal this summer, seeing it with my partial soundtrack in the fall was one of my proudest musical moments 🎵🎶🎶

i think johnny has a very unexpected and diverse music taste. psychedelic and folk-y, perhaps? his favorite artist is moby but sonic youth is a close second. probably had a phase where he strictly listened to cherry peel by of montreal and some big thief albums.

battled an intense 'rate your music' phase as a teenager and it shows. any alternative band you can think of, he's a fan. carries a huge soft spot for blood orange, the weeknd, frank ocean etc. :p
the type to listen to really popular artists but ignore their hits. swears he's not a male manipulator.

MEET ME BACKSTAGE..

IN WHICH, hobie sneaks backstage at a concert to chat up the lead singer of the band..
reader has no gender
“Right, thank you once again for being a fabulous crowd, goodbye!”
The small crowd of about 500 people roared with cheers and whistles. You couldn’t help but grin as you and your band mates walked off stage. Your drummer, Chaka, was buzzing with excitement.
“That was sooo cool! I know it’s only like 500 people but you it’s still so cool! They were cheering and some were singing songs and yeah, you know all that stuff?” Chaka exclaimed. She was a bit daft but it was alright, everyone still loved her. Your bassist, Sam, wrapped their arm around Chaka’s shoulder and pulled her in for a side hug. The three of you walked down the hall to the small lounge. Chaka was excitedly chatting about some punk guy in the crowd.
“He was like really scary looking but I just know he’s super cool with his close friends. You know what I mean? Yeah you should. Anyways..”
Chaka blabbed on about this mysterious punk guy to Sam as you arrived to the “lounge.” It wasn’t truly a lounge just a few beat up sofas with a coffee table in the middle and tech equipment littered around. Though your band has never had a lounge to go to after a gig so this was like luxury. A group of 3 guys were sat on a couch. They were so obviously just looking to hook up with one of you guys. It made you roll your eyes, but Chaka seemed delighted that people had come back here to talk to her. Sam mouthed to you “I’ll be watching her tonight” before following her to the couch. You just sat on a different couch and flipped through the magazine left on the coffee table.
It had must’ve been at least 15 minutes since you’ve sat down. The guys seemed a bit bored as Chaka chatted about which lipgloss she should use whilst Sam tried to deny the advances of some other guy. You leaned further into the couch, like you wanted to sink into it. The urge to leave was strong but where would you go? All your equipment still needed to be packed up. Suddenly the couch dipped next to you, causing you to jump slightly.
“Didnt meant to scare ya love..” A sort of deep voice spoke. You looked over to see.. a punk guy? Wait.. was this the guy Chaka was talking about? He slung his arm behind the couch and gave a grin.
“Say that show was bloody fantastic hm? Got real talent, all of ya.” He kicked feet up onto the coffee table, the thud from his boots earning Chaka’s attention. She gasped (very loudly) and pointed to him. Hobie laughed at her surprise.
“He’s the one I told you about…!” She (not so quietly) whispered.
“Aren’t I charming?” He teased. Chaka giggled and gave you a thumbs up.
“Make a friend (Y/N)! It wouldn’t like, hurt. Not at all!” She grinned and turned back to the men, who were eyeing Hobie next to you. Sam eyed him too, their eyes narrowed with their eyebrows furrowed.
Silence filled the space between you.
“So.. do you want my autograph or something..?” You questioned.
“Not at all love. Wouldn’t mind it if ya offer. Just thought you looked lovely on stage.” He shrugged at his words.
“Top tier performance. Would’ve been throwing flowers at you if I had em.” You couldn’t help but laugh a bit, covering your mouth to muffle it. Hobie grinned at your reaction.
“Trying to chat me up and I don’t even know your name.” You teased, but you didn’t know if it actually came across that way. You weren’t too experienced at doing this type of him, Chaka was.
“I like your style doll, the names Hobie. Hobie Brown.” Hobie introduced. You were about to say your name but he waved his hand in a way to tell you to not speak.
“Already know it. Wouldn’t be a true fan if I didn’t eh?” He had a shit-eating grin on his face.
You couldn’t help but grin back.
“Well well, if your such a big fan you wouldn’t mind leaving this place with me? Those creepy guys aren’t working their charm on me.” You tilted your head over to the guys who were trying to get closer to Chaka and Sam. Hobie raised an eyebrow at you.
“Trusting a stranger so easily? Didn’t your mum teach you ‘stranger danger’”. He teased. You rolled your eyes playfully.
“If I end up dead it’s better than being here.” You acted a little grossed out by the guys, just for dramatic effect.
“Well then come on love, I’ll take ya to my gig now. You wouldn’t mind playing guitar again tonight would ya?”

Little things in Tron: Legacy that fuck me up:
-Sam's bittersweet smile when Alan tells him that Kevin told him to sleep with his pager, and how the smile immediately falls off his face when Alan tells him that the page came from the arcade.
-The program* who tells Sam 'be quiet if you wanna live' is seen in End of Line later, confirming that derezzing a program isn't the same as killing them, which is why the other program jumps off into the fan when he is told he's going to the games, cause it destroyed his disc, and why he screams erase me.
-The way the sirens are hesitating when outfitting Sam, knowing they are about to change everything. They know he's not a program. The hesitation and the nod when they put the disc on his back.
-The fact the the punishment from Tron 1 has become a Roman Gladiator Sport for Clu. The fact that Clu is a mirror of Master Control, the thing that Flynn hates.
-when Clu says 'just you?' implying he was not expecting Sam, but expecting Alan, and he was expecting him like a few months ago in grid time.
-Quorra sitting on the roof alone watching the Games, having seen the Beacon, knowing Someone was there, but not knowing who. Not knowing she'd be rescuing the son of her Father figure. Probably someone who's shoes she'd been wanting to fill but not being able to.
-'There are no guests Kiddo' 'Sam...' 'You're here!' 'I'm here'
-Quorra's confused face when Kevin walks away.
-the fact that Kevin just happens to have extra rooms in his house. Why does he have so many empty rooms. Did he have hope for more ISOs?
-Tron immediately knowing Something is up when he see's Clu in orange in the flash back.
-'Tron. He fought for me.' 'why didn't you fight' 'he did'
-'I didn't send a page'
-The fact that Sam's plan would have worked if Zeus hadn't betrayed him. If Sam had gotten out on his own, he'd have deleted Clu and everything would have been fine. But Tron: Legacy is a tragedy
-the fucking. Above program * being IN THE END OF LINE CLUB. The way he looks at Sam as Sam walks by with Castor.
-Did Gem know Zeus would betray Sam? did she plan that since she met him?
-DAFT PUNK. I miss Daft Punk, and I love them in this movie for the three seconds you see them.
-'Thank you for bringing my son to me' Kevin coming to terms with his death, knowing he'll have to get Sam out and then reintegrate with Clu before Sam sees.
-The whole conversation between Kevin and Sam on the light rail, but especially knocking on the sky.
-Kevin recognizing Tron cause of the way he does a back flip and holds two discs. No one else can back flip like Tron, canon.
-'She's gonna wind up like one of them' 'Keep moving Sam' cause Kevin knows that Quorra will die, not be turned.
-'I have special plans for you' What does Clu have planned for Quorra? is he gonna SA her? He's so creepy toward her that's the vibes I get, but maybe he's just gonna torture her. This is a small thing that fucks me up cause this doesn't need to happen? Rinzler could have just taken her up to the tower without this interaction. Unnecessary plot hole right there.
-the fact that Clu's speech is an exact copy of Kevin's from the beginning of the movie.
-'I was afraid you where gonna say that' Kevin coming to terms with how Sam is gonna have to see him die.
-'radical man' 'it's all in the wrist'
-Rinzler taking himself back over 'I fight for the users'.
-'NOT WITHOUT YOU' 'it's what he wants' ‘goodbye kiddo’
-ALAN AND SAM AT THE ARCADE
-Sam and Quorra driving through Center City in the sunrise, a parallel of the sunset over Center City in the credits of the first movie.

Having so many different Sonic Underground AU ideas! Gotta at least get some of them written down before I forget!!
So, so, so! I happen to stumble across that old music video of Daft Punk's "One More Time" and remembered that Interstella 5555 exists. And since I've got Sonic on the brain you can probably see where the thought process is going!
Sonic Underground AU wherein Sonic, Sonia and Manic are living peacefully on their home planet, until they are attacked and kidnapped by Robotnik during a concert. (Lets just call the Sonic Underground planet "Mobius" and Robotnik's "Earth" for convenience sake.)
Aboard his spaceship the unconscious, helpless alien hedgehogs have their appearances changed to better blend in with the mobians/animal people/whatever you call them back on Earth. Their memories are also tampered with so they think they were always like this. Then they're fitted with mind control devices. All of their powers have also been suppressed as Robotnik only needs them to play music for his evil plan.
Shadow is a space explorer traveling the universe aboard the Ark. He has been to Mobius previously and is a huge fan of the band (especially of a certain blue guitarist). He picks up a distress signal about the kidnapping and immediately sets out in pursuit of the culprits. Ultimately ending up crash landing on Earth upon passing through the strange wormhole Robotnik had engineered.
Though Robotnik seems to be able to evade detection, the Ark crashing back to Earth draws the attention of GUN as it had disappeared from orbit several decades earlier. Rouge is one of the agents sent to investigate.
Meanwhile, Robotnik posing as their manager, presents the triplets to a record company owned Maximilian Acorn, who along with his daughter Sally, is greatly impressed by this new band. Soon enough the band takes the world by storm, rising quickly to the top of the charts. Though Sally can't help but be suspicious of the shady Robotnik, along with the aloof and strangely listless behaviour of the band members...

A week before 🏁
჻ Chaeri was exhausted. Her latest group activities with BTS and her first solo ones were making her schedule so full that she barely had time for herself
჻ In the 48 hours before landing back in Korea she could count having slept a total of 3 1/2 hours
჻ Paparazzi and fans were outside and inside the airport as always to greet her and welcome her back home.
჻ She chose not to take off her sunglasses and mask as her usual but simply waved as she tried to get out of the chaos surrounding her as soon as possible
჻ She just wanted to get into the big dark-windowed car where Hongjoong was waiting for her
჻ As she entered the car she found her boyfriend's arms holding her.
჻ The photographers' flashes lighted up the dim vehicle interior until her bodyguard closed the door, dividing them from the world outside
჻ "So tired, aren't you?"
჻ Hongjoong, with whom Chaeri had kept in touch as much as possible during her busy agenda, knew that the last few weeks had been tough for her, but those last two days especially
჻ Chaeri took off her glasses and mask, nodded and let him lay her head on his shoulder
჻ "Rest, I will wake you up when we get there."
჻ Whenever Chaeri spends nights at Ateez dorm, Seonghwa moves to Yunho and San's room, for obvious reasons
჻ It may have been the jet lag, exhaustion, almost 48 hours without closing her eyes, but as Hongjoong told her to get into bed, she slept for an endless time
჻ So long that the boy kept going up to her from time to time to ask her if she was hungry or needed anything else
჻ Chaeri walked out of the room, still in her night clothes and with hair that had lost its straightening, appearing wavy
჻ "What day is it?"
჻ Yunho and San couldn't hold back a laugh, having to take a long sip of water to down the fried chicken they were eating without choking on it
჻ "Don't people usually ask what time it is as soon as they wake up?"
჻ "So funny early in the morning, San-ah."
჻ "It's actually 4 pm, and it's Sunday."
჻ It took her several seconds and a stolen chicken wing from the carton of the boys in front of her to process what they had told her
჻ "It's Sunday?!"
჻ "Yes, wh-"
჻ Biting into some of the fowl in her hands she was quick to grab the remote control laid on the table and change the channel
჻ "I was watching the show!"
჻ "You're right, you're right. Sorry, I'll make it up to you, but we can't miss the grand prix."
჻ "It's not fair, they should all start from the same spot."
჻ "There was qualifying yesterday, the driver who sets the fastest lap time in it starts in pole position, which is the front of the grid. The other drivers line up behind him, in order of their qualifying times. So it's only fair that they are in different position."
჻ The more time passed, the more the two boys beside her seemed to be drawn to the sport
჻ Just as Leclerc's red Ferrari was overtaken by Perez, Hongjoong and Seonghwa made their way into the living room
჻ "Fuck!"
჻ "Good morning to you too, hon."
჻ Joong lowered himself toward her to stamp a kiss on her lips
჻ "Redbull just passed Ferrari," she said, to justify her frown. "and it means that redbull is going to win, again"
჻ "Wait, are we talking about the drink?"
჻ Chaeri glanced at him with an unreadable expression, at which Yunho cut in
჻ "Redbull is the racing car team that competes in formula one, and Ferrari is more or less its rival. And Chaeri-"
჻ Chaeri interrupted him, "And we cheer Ferrari because the driver is my friend" "Have you really never seen a race?"
჻ "Never"
჻ Chaeri clicked the tongue against her palate, bringing her eyes back to the television " Pretty disappointing."
჻ "I can't believe I agreed to this. I had so much work to finish this weekend."
჻ "You're the best, I'm sure you can finish it in half the time."
჻ "You are flattering me"
჻ "Babe, we had a problem to solve."
჻ "A problem?!"
჻ "Do you really think I was still going to put up with the fact that my boyfriend has never seen a formula one race?"
჻ "Yeah, I mean, I can understand that. Gosh, actually, I can understand it if you're the one to say it but… we could have seen it on TV instead of flying to Singapore so suddenly"
჻ "It will be worth it, I promise."
჻ It had been a while since Chaeri was seen in person at a formula one event.
჻ Following her impact during the grand prix opening a few years earlier, Chaeri's face was now easily associated with the motorsport
჻ Journalists and paparazzi were delighted to capture her hand-in-hand with her new boyfriend strolling along the paddock, badges dangling around their neck and outfits that stood out from the rest of the guests there
჻ No one knew they would be there, as it was such a sudden departure
჻ No one except two of the closest friends Chaeri had managed to make in those years: Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc
჻ Pierre and Charles were inseparable so, when she became friends with Pierre, it was inevitable not to establish a bond with the ferrari driver as well
჻ It was with the Frenchman that she first came across, in the paddock.
჻ The boy spread his arms wide to greet her, a hug she did not shy away from
჻ "So nice to see you again," in his perfect French accent, the boy took a few seconds before noticing Hongjoong's presence a step away from them
჻ "Same here. Please speak English so I can introduce you to my boyfriend" "Hongjoong, Pierre. Pierre, Hongjoong."
჻ Joong extended his hand to introduce himself, a smile dying shortly after he got a better look at his face
჻ "Are you introducing me to your past affair?!" The ATEEZ captain's eyes seemed to be about to pop out of their sockets, voluntarily dismissing the idea of speaking in English
჻ Joong remembered vividly the video leaked on the articles of all the Korean news magazines of her dancing with Pierre at a club years before
჻ Chaeri could not hold back a laugh "Babe, he is only ever been a friend."
჻ Hongjoong had no choice but to be dramatic (in a non-serious way) to give her a hard time until the race began and they were escorted to see it in a preferential spot
჻ As the cars prepared for the start, Chaeri explained to Hongjoong the importance of the start and how the drivers had to try to avoid getting stuck in traffic.
჻ "It's like the start of a marathon," explained Chaeri, "You don't want to fall behind or you'll be forced to do everything possible to catch up."
჻ "It's incredible how these drivers can maintain control of the car at those speeds"
჻ "Yes, and then there are the team strategies, like the choice of pit stops, that can make all the difference."
჻ As the race reached its climax. Leclerc and Perez were neck and neck, fighting for the top position. The girl couldn't help but feel her heart racing with excitement. "I can't believe how close it is"
჻ "It's so intense. I never knew watching a race could be so exciting." and he was really amazed by that
჻ As the final lap approached, the tension grew even higher. Chaeri and Hongjoong could both feel the adrenaline pumping through their veins. Finally, the race came to an end, and the winner was announced: Redbull
჻ While Chaeri was a bit disappointed by another second-place result from Charles, Hongjoong who had simply enjoyed the race without having matured any preferences yet felt the need to release the adrenaline built up during the race
჻ "That was fucking beautiful" He took her face in his hands to give her kiss that had nothing gentle in it
჻ It cannot be said that that race was a checkered flag for her favorite team, but it was definitely a checkered flag for her love

Listie's 600+ words about Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) or: (Listie didn't write all this for nuthin' and she ain't getting a RYM account)
It's kind of impossible to listen to Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) without just knowing in the back of your head that this is a low-effort cash grab. As much as I honestly wanted to give this album a fair shake, I just know that someone up top figured they could squeeze a little extra out of Random Access Memories' anniversary by having someone go in and just mute the percussion track. I mean, I know there's a section of people out there who actively seek out and enjoy drumless versions of popular music, but was there really enough of them to justify this? Were people really clamoring for this? Was anyone back in 2013 listening to Random Access Memories and being like, "Man, this is fantastic and all, but I just can't stand having a backbeat lock in the groove"?
The best thing this edition does is really make you appreciate the drums on the original. Which, it's not like they needed to be appreciated any more, but it's remarkable how many tracks on this album are downgraded to just "fine" at best once you remove the drums. "Get Lucky", "Beyond", "Instant Crush"... Sure? They're OK? I guess? But would anyone regularly reach for these over the original? I don't think so; the change isn't really substantial enough.
The track that gets it the worst, I think, is "Lose Yourself To Dance". The drums and percussion are a huge reason why that track works so well. I mean, who the hell wanted this disco dance song to have its four-to-the-floor beat removed? What the hell's even the point of it, then? It just sounds so... Sparse.
(Well, actually, the track that gets it the worst worst is "Doin' It Right", because once you remove the drums from that it's literally just an acapella song. But that's kind of funny, I think, and, hey, if it can provide me some kind of entertainment... It doesn't stop it from being bad, but still. And shoutout, too, to "Giorgo By Moroder" losing its click track.)
Honestly, I don't think it got any better than the first single they released for this edition, "Beyond". It's ambient enough that it can work without the drums. If that had been the only track released drumless—and maybe "The Game Of Love" as well—sure, fine. Just an odd little experiment that doesn't mean much. But once you start trying to remove the drums from the groovier, dancier tracks, that's where everything falls apart.
I can't imagine Daft Punk themselves approving this. I mean, I know if I were them I wouldn't have signed off on this. But I guess they did, 'cuz here it is. I suppose they just heard something in it that I can't. And I wish I could, because as it stands, like I said above, this is just a nakedly lazy cash grab. If they really wanted to release another Random Access Memories album for its anniversary, I think a true remix album would've been a lot better. Let some other people come in and give these songs a fresh spin. I know they weren't entirely against remixes of these songs; they did do their own 10-minute remix of "Get Lucky" back in the day. So what would've been the harm in letting some other people give it a shot?
I certainly know the fans are gonna remix it. That's probably gonna be the best thing we get out of this release, since removing the drums makes each song a lot more conducive to a lot more than they were before. (And we might get some more drum covers, too, if that's more your thing.) But as it stands, as a listening experience on its own, I think everyone would be fine going drumlessless.

In terms of what music They™ enjoy (ie. stuff they actually listened to at that time, so mostly older stuff than the aughts):
Gabriel's mostly an alt rock/metal/punk & similar type, which I'm sure will surprise approximately no one who's read Gabriel. His frequently played artists include Nine Inch Nails (his favorite band), Joy Division, Tool, Radiohead, RATM and the like. He's also been known to dabble in more electronic genres (eg. we share an appreciation for Daft Punk and Depeche Mode), enjoy classical music (eg. Beethoven), and have a certain nostalgic fondness for some classic rock, such as GNR and Pink Floyd, and Elton John, who was his late mother's favorite singer.
Jeff's a big classic rock snob* - think GNR, Zeppelin, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, CCR, Van Halen, Springsteen. His favorite band is Pink Floyd (favorite album Animals). Caveat: if you get him drunk enough there's a chance he'll jokingly (read: fully seriously) put on either Aquamarine by Aqua or Voulez-Vous by Abba and get very into it.

Hello Tumblr, I'm Wub
As you can tell by looking at my page I am a huge Daft Punk fan. Some of you may already know me from Twitter but this post is meant to be an introduction to the Daft Punk fans here on Tumblr who don't know what I do.
I became a fan in 2013. In 2014-2016 I spent some time on the daft club forums obsessing over Daft Punk's music and personas. I eventually just started collecting as many photos of them as I could which led to me joining Tumblr in early 2016. I really only used it for a few months mainly just to collect photos and read interviews. I idolized the work done by fans like ifcwdjd, cylee77, & one-additional-time who would share mountains of content for fans to enjoy. But like I said, I didn't really stay for long, stopping by once or twice a year ever since.
In March, 2016 I made my Daft Punk fan account on Twitter and for the past 7+ years it's been my main place to talk about Daft Punk and share media. In 2018 while I was completing my B.A. in History I made my own website thedaftpunkhistorian.weebly.com where I could organize the heaps of Daft Punk information that existed online but was becoming difficult to find if you didn't know where to look. Over the years I've made it my mission to find and share every known interview they've ever done. I've also made it my mission to find and share every known Daft Punk photoshoot in as high of quality as possible. I've noticed that as time moves forward and our screens are getting higher and higher resolution, those old scans aren't looking as sharp as they used to.
So in 2021 I took inspiration from ifcwdjd, cylee77, & one-additional-time and started collecting / scanning Daft Punk magazines myself. In August 2021 I bought a nice EPSON Perfection V600 scanner and have been obsessively tracking down magazines to scan for the past 2 years. In the past 2 years alone I've added around 100 magazines to my collection. By this point I have tracked down a couple dozen interviews that didn't previously exist online as well as scanned hundreds of photos (several of which didn't previously exist online or only existed in poor quality). I usually upload the interviews to Archive.org and the photos to my Twitter but now I will also be uploading them here along with other things I've collected over the years.

So if as you’re probably aware there’s some overlap between the jojo fandom and the persona fandom to the point where some fans have given the persona’s stand names
(In case you’re unaware stands are apparitions based on the users spirt and are typically named after names after well known songs artists or albums)

god the bandom au.
so this is from six months ago in a transformers server. the following conversation included @magicalspacedragon, @the-lunar-system, cat, and @gelpenss among others and took over the channel and our brains for the next three days. it has its own dedicated thread. there's a google doc with memes. actual publication of anything is going to have to wait until i write the fandom primer to go with the band primer that already exists which i will attempt to summarize here. both of those things are written as in-universe documents compiled by a fan.
please understand that this au was brainstormed by people who know, collectively, maybe 3 things about the wreckers trilogy and maybe 4 things about how music works. NOTHING about how the music industry works. this is not meant to be plausible it is meant to be fun HERE WE GO
LINEUP for what is theoretically a rock band but really plays whatever they want:
Impactor: lead vocals and second guitar. front man. worked shitty construction jobs with megatron back in the day. they both got blacklisted from a lot of places for unionizing. impactor spiraled for a bit and got into drugs and got into rehab and started clawing his way back into a stable life and was selling his old motorcycle for spare cash to this dude named Springer when they started talking music together and then started jamming together and Impactor never actually finished selling him the bike. he's in his 40s and does all the vamping between songs and one of his jokes is that he did it backwards, you're supposed to have the drug problem after you get famous, not before. He writes a lot of lyrics.
Springer: drums. he's crazy good at music theory in an intuitive way, he's one of those people who can pick up an instrument and be playing it ten minutes later and also harmonize by ear, but his first and only love is drums. also backing vocals. he has a mullet and a relationship (working? platonic? romantic? who can say) with Something Unbearably Pretentious, this folk-punk duo (Rod and Arcee) that predates their music days. one of his dads is a convicted serial killer and the other is a lawyer who doesn't usually do contract law but DID come along when they first signed with a major studio and made the company lawyer cry, as a favor. he also writes a lot of lyrics. if their touring schedules don't overlap he moonlights as the drummer for the backing band of Verity Carlo, girl rocker. he's a friendly guy.
Whirl: lead guitar, technically, but he plays whatever the hell he wants, including but not limited to saxophone, theremin, and otomatone. they've got albums where liner notes for half the songs are just 'we bet Whirl he couldn't play this and lost.' this is actually how whirl got involved, Impactor started writing music while jamming with Springer and asked Whirl who he knew from group therapy to start covering some parts. Whirl is actually a registered composer with ASCAP under a different name. he lives with tailgate and cyclonus and his dream is to write a piece that shows up on cyclonus's classical station without ever telling cyclonus what he's doing. tailgate has no idea what whirl does for a living. Whirl has some major facial burn scarring so he always wears a helmet with an LED screen on stage and tells people he's the bastard child of daft and punk. he does a lot of instrumental writing but not many lyrics but the lyrics he does write are devastating. i swear this is a summary. we came up with so much shit.
Perceptor: keytar! Springer brought in Perceptor, who's a classically trained pianist. Brainstorm's their producer because he produced the band's first EP because he was already married to perceptor and was willing to work for takeout Perceptor is a brian may 'phd and also a rockstar' type--he got his degree and was working and then lost his eye in a lab accident and needed to do something else for a bit during rehab and whoops now he's in a band. he wears a bedazzled eye patch on stage. he doesn't really write songs, which, thank god, he can be the impartial judge when the other three are having artistic differences, but he has MANY opinions on sound levels and mixing. he's the one controlling any on-stage looping. he also sometimes links sound effects into his keytar to react during shows.
Kup: manager, and album bassist! Springer's foster dad for a bit after both his bio dads got arrested, was a roadie back in the day for some other groups so he has more connections than a phone bank. he can't keep up with performing, though, which is why they have a series of touring bassists for a while and eventually
Drift: bass. VERY RARELY vocals. he used to be Kpop artist Deadlock until he had some escalating joints/blood pressure problems that led to him fainting onstage, his label cutting ties, him having a mental breakdown and getting on a plane going anywhere, and ending up on Rod and Arcee's couch for six months after they ran into him at an airport getting back from their own tour and going 'dude you look like you need some fries'. (this is also how rod befriended springer back in the day). Springer was bemoaning to them how their latest touring bassist had to drop out the week before they had to leave and Rod and Arcee went 'hey funny story.' Drift jokes that the first time he met them he couldn't tell Springer and Impactor apart. They had no idea who he was and he had no idea who they were but he could play bass and one tour later they'd hit it off and he joined them permanently, especially because they are happy for him to do Zero social media or public persona work.
this wasn't supposed to get this long. i'm amazed i kept it this short. there are so many more details i could put here. i will close with a fun snippet written the very first day of this au. they’re making like, road videos for social media and springer keeps challenging people to dance-offs and he challenges drift, the new tour bassist who seems like he’ll be sticking around because he meshes well and they could really use a long term bass and Drift busts out a routine so impressive that Springer is staring at him and the video ends with him tackling drift going ‘WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT'

easily the most narratively useless bit of worldbuilding TA and I ever came up with (well before the idea to write the TechnoFae into a book) was random profiles of the background music scene and specifically a band we called The MTVs
they're a CRT-head music duo a la Daft Punk. they're EXTREMELY underground. they play small gigs weekly at one of three bars, and every week they perform completely new music in wildly varying genres under different names, but always as a dichotomy (Analog & Digital, Strange & Charm, Summer & Winter, you get the idea). they aren't actually called The MTVs, that is a name used exclusively by fans of their work to talk about them on forums online. once, when going by Analog & Digital, they performed a song called Trans Wrongs that earned them the secondary nickname The HRT Monitors.
they have no online presence and they've never actually released an album. fans of their work take video or audio recordings of them and upload them online. they will, occasionally, take those audios and burn their own unlabeled CDs to sell at shows. they never make more than 10 at a time and they're completely random; you and a friend might buy two CDs and get two completely different selections.
but the funniest bit of this is actually the guy their fans have dubbed The MTVs Stage Manager.
the venue they play at on any given week is completely random. no one's ever been able to find a pattern. and their set is never announced anywhere ahead of time. one guy camped out in front of one of their usual venues for a month and never saw them.
but. there is one guy that people have noticed has been at every single show. he doesn't seem to be a fan, he's just. there. inexplicably, at every single one. no one knows who he is, and fans have taken a real Batman's Ass approach to trying to identify him. he's a cryptid. a ghost. a myth. a fucking legend. no one's ever been able to talk to him. the band doesn't know who he is (but when asked, they also act like they're brand new, never played anywhere before, completely deflect if you try to ask them abt their older music).
the one consistent fact is that the Stage Manager ALWAYS gets to the venue about twenty minutes before the MTVs play, so people will try to take pictures of Random Dudes that Might Be The Right Guy and have a shocking ~67% success rate finding where the MTVs are gonna play. that percentage goes up the shittier the picture is. a decently clear, torso-up shot of a Random Guy whose face is obscured by something is probably not the guy, less than 50% chance that The MTVs will be there, 46% at best if that's the only picture anyone puts up. an Extremely Blurry picture of Some Guy's Shoes and the image isn't even loading for like half the people trying to look at it? 90% chance The MTVs will be wherever that guy is.
and yes, I did figure out how to work this into the story. we'll see if it takes.

#46: "El Dorado" by Magdalena Bay
One of the first Mag Bay songs I ever fell in love with. This one reminds me of old synth tracks from the late 80s. The best comparison I can draw is that it sounds like a modern version of "Island Sunrise" by Software to me. Singer Mica Tenenbaum switching between Spanish and English on a dime always makes me think of how Sarah Bonito does that with Japanese and English in Kero Kero Bonito songs. It's one of those things where you forget she's bilingual until she decides to start spitting in Spanish.
#69 (heh heh): "A BOY IS A GUN*" by Tyler, the Creator
I still don't think Tyler gets enough credit as a music video director. He makes absolutely gorgeous stuff and the video for this song is no exception. While IGOR isn't really my favorite Tyler album, I think there are a good handful of tracks that really stand out, this one especially. You can hear a lot of Kanye influence in song, especially with the sample he used for this ("Bound" by the Ponderosa Twins Plus One). I love the vulnerability in the central line, "Don't, don't shoot me down." I think the song allows you to feel something that a lot of people don't want to talk about much: When you're invested in someone more than they're invested in you and inside you're begging them to not shoot you down. A boy is a gun at point blank range when he tells you he doesn't want you and it hurts in ways that I don't think many want to talk about these days. It sucks to get rejected and you get upset, no matter how mature you handle it.
#88: "Give It to Me Baby" by Rick James
The best comment I ever read about Rick James was that he's what you get when you play Grand Theft Auto with all the cheat codes on. He's a larger than life figure and his music was the same way. He was an early 80s funk icon and pioneer that was monumental in shaping how the decade would play out. He was one of those guys where his wild lifestyle caught up to him real fast and as a result it hurt him and wiped away a good deal of his legacy. That, and I think Dave Chappelle unintentionally did a lot of damage to him by turning him into a caricature so hard that there's a whole generation of people who think "Rick James" is a guy Dave made up. He did just as much for 80s funk that Prince did and Rick deserves more love than he got.
Also, Quincey Jones shamelessly and very obviously ripped off the bassline from this song for Michael Jackson's "Thriller." I think of it every time I listen to this.
#91: "Is There Someone Else? - Live" by The Weeknd
I listened to a lot of the Weeknd this year. I've been a casual fan and I've followed the guy since he really blew up with Beauty Behind the Madness back in 2015. I thought it was really cool that he released a live album for the After Hours Til Dawn tour AND a concert film for it too. I think 2023 really saw a return of the concert film (this, Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense had a theatrical re-run, The Eras Tour film, etc.) and that makes me really happy. This was one of my favorite songs from Dawn FM to hear played live.
I've always really loved the dark synth-pop world of the Weeknd's music (when it ISN'T a part of The Idol...) and the thing that I liked about the So-Fi Stadium album was how his setlist is full of transitions and connections that keep the songs going. It reminds me of how Daft Punk would mix and present their music in a live environment. It's a really good show and I recommend the film and the album if you're looking for some cool mainstream pop to enjoy.
