send me a ⭐ and i'll give a director's commentary on one of my fics!

for you, aur, i'll talk about my most recent CNL fic: oh, how was i to know, which is about clint realizing that natasha is his and laura's missing soulmate.

this fic kinda came out of two desires: i wanted to explore why S.H.I.E.L.D. knows about natasha and not laura, and i also wanted to explore the pre-bond time, cause i knew from the start that clint didn't know that natasha was his soulmate when he saved her life but i didn't know how to explain that

(it was fun to write about pre-canon CNL, though, cause it let me use the timeline i made for my very first CNL fic which will never see the light of day! one day, maybe, i'll use the laura backstory from that fic for something)

the fic kinda ended up centering around the middle scene, where natasha tries to grift clint and he sees through it. i didn't plan for this scene, but it makes sense -- i feel so, so strongly that natasha's trauma and past affect her WAY more than we see in canon. so writing that scene kinda ended up with me... theorizing how clint (and laura, by extension) would deal with that. and the answer is that they are also both traumatized! but also that clint leads with compassion, even when it's kinda stupid to do so, cause clint trusts his gut above all. and trusting natasha is the strongest gut feeling he ever has in his life, even before he finds out that she's his soulmate.

OT4: Clauromanogers

Okay, so I couldn’t decide between Romanogers and ClintNatLaura. But then I thought... why not combine them together?

Why not create a pairing of 4 instead of 3 and add Steve into the mix?

Sounds crazy, I know, but think about it from a shipper perspective...

It would give everyone what they want - Romanogers, Clintasha, AmeriHawk, Nat/Laura, Steve/Laura, ClintNatLaura, ClintLauraSteve and ClintNatSteve.

Also, regarding that last ship, Clint, Natasha and Steve certainly have their moments as a trio in The Avengers.

Also, look at this scene from Age of Ultron of Lila hugging her Aunt Nat with Steve and the rest of the family standing nearby... LOOK AT IT!

Alright, alright, I’ll cut straight to my headcanon...

Clint & Laura are still legally married, while Steve marries Natasha, but the four of them are in a polyamorous relationship. They are all bisexual and in love with each other.

In addition to helping raise Cooper, Lila and Nathaniel, Steve & Natasha welcome their own children: twins, Sarah and James, named after Steve’s mother and best friend. Even though the Barton kids are Clint/Laura’s and Sarah & James are Steve/Nat’s, they still view all four of them as their parents.

After realizing they can’t keep doing the hero job for the rest of their lives, they decide to retire to focus on raising this huge new family they’ve created. Clint begins training a new girl named Kate Bishop to take over for him as Hawkeye, while Steve passes his shield and the Cap mantle onto his friend, Sam Wilson / Falcon, in hopes that he’ll lead an all-new Avengers team in the future to protect Earth.

And maybe... just maybe... Natasha reunites with her friend and sister-figure, Yelena Belova, to introduce her new family and maybe discuss the idea of her taking over as Black Widow for the new Avengers?

And finally the ship name. Obviously the title gives it away, but here it is anyway...

(Also, yes, this completely ignores Endgame and the ‘I can’t have kids’ scene in Age of Ultron. Just thought I’d clear that up 😉)

A20. the one where you don’t know your soulmate until you hear them say your name.

They come up the stairs of the house together, Clint and a woman who almost looks…blurry.

Laura frowns, boosting Lila a little higher on her hip, and Lila curls her tiny, chubby fingers into the collar of Laura’s cardigan. “Yeah, do you see Daddy?” she murmurs, bouncing her gently. “It looks like he’s brought a friend home, hm? Let’s go see.”

She leaves the nursery, heading down the main staircase just in time to hear the front door open, Clint’s gorgeous, familiar voice calling, “Honey, I’m home!” She rolls her eyes, fond and just shy of amused.

“Hi, sweetheart,” she says, coming around the corner, and she–stops.

There is a woman next to Clint, and Laura can’t…can’t quite focus on her, not properly. She’s not tall and not short, her hair is…red, maybe? For a moment, Laura squints at her, trying to get a proper look, and she thinks she sees green eyes, full lips, loose curls. It’s a beautiful face, she thinks, before it blurs again, and Laura can’t quite tell why this feels familiar.

“Laur,” Clint says, stepping up to her and wrapping an arm around her waist. Automatically, she tips her head up to kiss his jaw. “I need you to meet someone. And to, uh, not get mad?”

A soft laugh from the woman on Clint’s other side, and it settles over Laura’s bones. “I told you not to lead with that,” she says, and Laura sees a hand extend toward her.

“Hi,” the woman says. “I’m Natasha, Clint’s partner. It’s good to finally meet you, Laura.”

And–

Oh, she thinks, as her vision clears, and Natasha’s clear green eyes, lovely and bright, swim into view beside Clint’s, as gorgeous as they’ve been since he said her name in a bar and brought color rushing into her world.

Oh. There you are.

Laura smiles. “Hello, Natasha,” she says, and is so, so glad that she can see it clearly as Natasha’s lips curve in a smile.

Re: rarepair - ClintNatLaura, but specifically Nat or Laura centric!! Not the rarest, but still kinda rare. I love them so much!!! 😭😭😭 My headcanon - Natasha fell for Laura first! Laura is her first crush, and she had an entire kicked-puppy-dog phase because Laura and Clint were about to get married!! Twelve years and three babies later, Natasha still blushes when Laura kisses or cuddles with her, and Clint has never stopped giving her shit for it!!!

Aw, anon, I love this!

Natasha has had her guard up for so long that aside from, like, tiny fantasy moments in the Red Room, where a guard or a mark is the same kind of crush as a guy from 90210 or a Backstreet Boy or whatever the 2020 equivalent is, IDK, I’m old on the internet- aside from that, she’s never really had a crush, because a crush is to let yourself be vulnerable. It’s to acknowledge your personal preferences and needs and desires, and maybe even- if you’re brave- try to do something about it.

Natasha always had to keep her guard up; she’s been so busy protecting her physical body she hasn’t had to protect her heart. Laura is beautiful and she’s smart and she’s kind and she is in no way trying to kill Natasha, and that is a combination that Natasha hasn’t experienced in as long as she can remember. So when she falls, she falls hard, and can’t stop thinking of all the reasons she shouldn’t- because of vulnerability, and because of Clint, who saved her life and is her best friend, what is wrong with her.

And she’s pretty good at hiding what she wants, as a general rule, but she’s never wanted something like this before, something that maybe even could be attainable. So her mask slips sometimes, and she doesn’t even notice.

Laura and Clint think they see the signs, have had many conversations with each other about it, but also see how Natasha wants so desperately to make her new life work that she would do just about anything for it, and they don’t want to put her in a position where she might say yes even if she doesn’t want it the way they think they do. Does Natasha really want her (want them) or is she so starved for affection that she sees things through that lens?

(Natasha wonders the same thing, she knows that’s a possibility, but she wants, more than she’s ever wanted before, more than she’s ever let herself want before.)

And there’s angst and longing, not through miscommunication or refusal to communicate (IDK about you but I’m over that) but because everyone is so focused on trying to respect each other’s boundaries and needs that they don’t realize they all want the same thing.
