i vote that next year instead of reading Dracula we do a Jeeves & Wooster Book Club. those two never got the rabid tumblr shipping fandom they deserved (disqualified for the sheer technicality of being published a century too soon). we must correct this injustice

I was reading an article from CNN about journalists in Gaza (link) and this particular paragraph stuck out to me...
Tumblr media
I was initially a journalism major in college so I understand the background of why an organization like CNN would require this style of reporting (i.e. "both sides" representism). However, these inserts of Isreali "viewpoints" that have been shown to be barefaced lies in an article about Gazan journalists risking their lives is just piss-poor optics.
If anyone wonders why people have lost faith in traditional media sources, this is a perfect example. In an article centering Palestinian voices, the organization still requires that Israeli talking points be linked as well and often, in the same paragraph. It reads like: 'here's a quote about a personal lived experience of genocide but nah uh, here's isreali propaganda claiming they are lying and bc they are an ally, they should be believed'. It's American/Western exceptionalism at its finest because "why should we believe a Palestinian, they aren't paragons of truth and justice like we are?"
I don't know if I quite explained myself like I wanted but this particular article just made me so angry that CNN and other Western media were once considered 'trustworthy' sources of information and now are parroting isreali lies. AND telling their readers that Palestinian voices on the ground telling first-hand information are not "good enough" sources of information.

We talk about the 13yo AO3 writers whose second language is English, but we do NOT talk about the 14yo TikTok editors who only have time to post between their fifteen extracurricular activities enough okay? I cannot wait to see all these kids make it to the other side of the fan-to-creator pipeline because 👏🏼 they 👏🏼 should 👏🏼 be 👏🏼 making 👏🏼 professional 👏🏼 videos 👏🏼 like they’re posting the most profound, heart-wrenching, gut-punching, blood-pumping, tear-jerking video edits four times a day like it’s nothing. If they don’t grow up to become professional video editors for feature films and trailers and music videos then what is even the point? They’ve set the bar too high now, if they are the next generation of video production then we are in good hands rest assured

broke: the Pharisees were so EVIL, that's why Jesus TOTALLY OWNED them lolzzzz
woke: The Pharisees believed that the Messiah wouldn't come back until people's hearts were holy, so they were trying to save the Jewish people by imposing rules that they thought would lead to their deliverance
BESPOKE: The Pharisees were trying to hold onto the culture and religious identity that had held the Jewish people together for centuries, just as modern Christians can be so attached to tradition and political identities that they overlook radical love and change. Without tradition and rules, there is no order, no unity, no culture, and no sense of purpose. Yet, with too much legalism, we ignore the reason God gave us rules and customs and become thoughtless robots instead of life-long explorers of the Divine. The only way to balance these opposing ideas is through finding identity through life-changing encounters with Jesus, just like Paul, who was both a Pharisee and one of the most radical advocates for grace, mercy, and salvation through faith.

while i don't out and out dislike our man charles emerson winchester III i do often times find him hard to get on board with in a way that's different than enjoying the satirical intervention that is the walking disaster frank burns; while frank the character is politically almost brecht-adjacent in terms of how overtly he functions as a reflection of the political/critical intervention the show is aiming to make in the early years, charles's specific brand of racism/classism/general shitheadedness/etc. is almost more insidious in terms of the way mash as a show tries to generate sympathy for him and ends up normalizing/downplaying the bigotry in a way that feels reflective of the growing conservatism of the late seventies and is (seemingly) doubled down on with the election of reagan in the eighties; to be clear david ogden stiers is absolutely FANTASTIC and i don't think that every character has to be sympathetic to be interesting and/or worthy of analysis—as i type this up i'm currently rewatching "dr. winchester and mr. hyde," which i think is a fantastic and legitimately nuanced charles-centric episode—but the people who are like "charles is better than frank! he's less racist! etc. etc.!" and erase CEW3's negative/abrasive qualities for the sake of stanning and/or a ship are clearly not watching the same show that i am lmfao

i can’t think how else to describe class of 07 than to say it’s bridesmaids meets a hybrid of the wilds and yellowjackets with a sprinkling of derry girls silliness and that it’s a love letter to all your dead school friendships which will kick everyone over the age of 21 in the heart but make them say thank you
