Embracing Life with Chronic Pain and Discomfort: A Journey of Resilience

Living with chronic pain and discomfort can be an incredibly challenging experience, one that affects nearly every aspect of our lives. Whether it stems from a long-term health condition or continues to persist despite medical interventions, the daily battle against pain may seem overwhelming. However, by adopting certain strategies and making necessary adjustments, it is possible to find a renewed sense of hope and live a fulfilling life amidst the struggle. In this blog post, we will explore some practical tips on how to navigate life with chronic pain and discomfort.
1. Educate Yourself:
Knowledge is power when it comes to managing chronic pain conditions. Take the time to research your specific condition, including its causes, symptoms, available treatments, and self-help techniques. Understanding more about your condition will empower you to make informed decisions regarding your healthcare while enabling effective communication with medical professionals.
2. Adopt a Multidisciplinary Approach:
Consulting with various healthcare specialists can provide different perspectives in managing your chronic pain. Consider seeking help from physical therapists, psychologists, nutritionists, and alternative medicine practitioners as part of your overall treatment plan. Different therapies might contribute positively to your well-being by addressing physical limitations, emotional challenges, and dietary concerns.
3. Establish a Support Network:
Living with chronic pain can feel isolating at times; therefore, surrounding yourself with supportive family members, friends, or joining support groups can offer comfort and understanding. Connecting with others who share similar experiences provides an outlet for sharing frustrations and obtaining valuable advice.
4. Prioritize Self-Care:
Self-care activities are crucial for maintaining overall well-being while living with chronic pain. Focus on incorporating practices such as gentle exercises (e.g., swimming or yoga), meditation or mindfulness techniques, adequate sleep routines, proper nutrition, and stress reduction strategies into your daily routine. These lifestyle choices can help minimize pain levels, boost mood, and enhance your quality of life.
5. Pace Yourself:
Accepting that you may need to adjust your daily activities can be challenging but is essential when dealing with chronic pain. Prioritize tasks, delegate responsibilities, and break activities into manageable segments. Practicing pacing ensures that you do not overexert yourself, avoiding exacerbation of symptoms while still accomplishing necessary goals.
6. Embrace Alternative Therapies:
Incorporating alternative therapies such as acupuncture, massage therapy, aromatherapy, or heat/cold treatments into your pain management routine can provide additional relief alongside traditional medical interventions. Experiment with various approaches until you find what works best for you, always in consultation with your healthcare provider.
7. Celebrate Small Victories:
Living with chronic pain means there will inevitably be good days and bad days. Instead of focusing solely on the challenges ahead, celebrate each small victory along the way. Whether it's completing a simple task without excessive discomfort or finding moments of respite from pain through effective coping techniques, acknowledging these triumphs helps maintain a positive mindset.
Living with chronic pain and discomfort is undoubtedly an arduous journey; however, it does not have to define who you are or diminish the joy in your life. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, educating yourself about your condition, prioritizing self-care activities and surrounding yourself with a supportive network, you can navigate this path with resilience and hope. Remember that every step forward counts – embrace the journey towards living a fulfilling existence despite chronic pain!

Guilt & Chronic Illness
Something I’ve noticed as I navigate living with chronic illness and connecting with others who are on the same path, nobody really speaks about the guilt that comes with chronic illness. I know in my own life I certainly have felt guilty for being sick and not being able to do the things I used to be able to do with and for myself and my family. My chronic illness is debilitating, which means…

things people don't tell you about being on SSDI
you'll grieve the ability to hold down a full-time job
you'll grieve the ability to hold down a part-time job that pays more than $1300/month
any questions you have for the Social Security Administration (SSA) about your claim can take various phone calls, visits to your local office (which may not be close or accepting in-person appointments), and a lot of waiting
you can do a lot on MySSA, but you can't see everything--like your acceptance or denial letter
it's tough coming up with a new routine when you're not working
it's tough fostering your self-worth when you're not working
mental health takes a front seat when you're not working (access to mental health services is crucial; look into marketplace plans, medicaid, COBRA, and sliding scale services)
The Sleepy Girl Guide is amazing for before/during/after application and will show you everything you may qualify for after being approved
you may not be able to relate to your friends as much because they're working and you're not--really hit hard on your common interests
not working can be very isolating and lonely
other disabled folks and folks on SSDI will be lifelines--join a support group on a platform like facebook or follow pages specific to your chronic illness/condition on tumblr, etc.
you'll feel pressure to return to work once you feel a little better--don't let capitalism get to you and prevent you from healing
you might be afraid/anxious that someone somewhere is going to take away your hard-earned benefits--talk through this with a mental health pro or a trusted friend/support group
it's okay to struggle
it's okay to ask for help
it's okay if this isn't how you pictured your life
it's okay. you're gonna be okay. you, yourself, are precious.

The Final Final Bow
Last week, I made the decision to leave my job. The President, no longer wishing to see me, arranged for an immediate resignation. That's how things go when you're no longer serving their purpose. It's one of the reasons I chose to step away from the corporate world.
Let me share a bit of my journey with you. Five years ago, after a brutal battle with Lupus and other health challenges, I left my job with no intention of returning. Yet, my career had been my everything. For the longest time, I believed it was all I had. When Lupus struck, it shattered me both physically and emotionally. It felt like a point of no return. I felt hopeless and lost. But as I quietly fought my battle, my faith in the Lord deepened, giving me a newfound hope and a fresh start.
I ventured into consultancy and launched a small business. Then, last year, an opportunity for a work-from-home role came knocking. I took it, thinking it might be a breeze and a chance to dip my toes back in the water. Since it was a startup, I believed it was untainted by corporate red tape. However, as time passed, I discovered that bureaucracy was deeply ingrained in the company.
One major contributor to this bureaucracy is the President's lack of experience in the corporate world, business, and leadership. While it may have been a significant milestone for her and the CEO to launch a business together, their inability to lead, inspire, and motivate their team will impede them from building a sustainable organization, potentially leading to their downfall. Unfortunately, this affects hundreds of individuals.
The recurring lesson in stories like this is that seeking stability solely in the corporate world is a misconception. True stability comes from within. It means taking control of your own destiny, not leaving it solely in the hands of your superiors or the company you work for. Understand your purpose and pave your own way to success.
