I Finally Watched Encanto
And it was very underwhelming. I don't get what the hype was about. It was mid at best. The best thing about it was probably the visuals. Oh, I loved the variety of skin tones! Usually, I don't care about skin colour in movies but for some reason, it stood out to me in this one. The intro and outro scenes were good too.
I am not a film expert so I can't convey what made the film fall flat for me. But here are some things that I found lacking:
The music is not memorable and I found it hard to immerse myself in it. I absolutely hated Surface Pressure. Some parts of We Don't Talk About Bruno were nice to listen to but it still wouldn't make the top 10 of my Disney songs list. It's not a song I would sing to myself. I can't even remember any of the lyrics besides the title namesake. I think my favourite piece was the Caterpillar song that played for Abuela Alma and Pedro. Maybe partly because it's in Spanish so I have lower expectations for it lol. Since I barely speak Spanish and all.
The family members kind of felt like plot devices? That just appeared when the plot called for it? I am not sure how to explain it but the main culprit for me was Isabela. She was basically a nothing character who was just there in the background being a prima donna and rolling her eyes. Then once Mirabel supposedly has to confront her, she has all this major development in like 2 mins and finally cracks? Luisa was way better because I saw her insecurities and how weakness made her feel worthless throughout the movie. I don't understand why Cousin Camilo was needed in the movie. His dad was good enough comic relief. I loved Antonio at the start and his relationship with Mirabel. I wanted to see that relationship more in the movie so much. But then even he began to feel like a cheap plot device.
How Bruno was handled was unsatisfying. The whole plot about Bruno just felt contrived. Bruno is supposed to be the family undesirable who no one talks about...but Dolores knew about him the entire time? The ending with Abuela and Bruno felt so rushed too. I thought the climax would have involved Bruno more but he just showed up at the end and now everything is ok? Bruno was just a way to show Mirabel how special she was and once that happened, everything about Bruno was wrapped up in a neat tidy bow.
The plot development was poor and felt like a plot in an adventure game. Gave me similar vibes to the plot in The Rise of Skywalker. How Luisa just happens to know Mirabel's starting point. How Mirabel just happens to find Bruno when the dude has been living unnoticed for how long. Even the ending with the butterfly almost made me roll my eyes.
The powers felt underdeveloped. I don't understand the limits of them and why only the Madrigals have them. Well, I guess it makes sense for the family to have the miracle to themselves as a kind of comfort for Pedro dying...like men don't sacrifice themselves for their families nobly all the time. How much weight can Luisa lift? What is the range of Pepa's powers? Mirabel said in her song that her mood affects the weather but the movie mainly shows the weather just affects her individual space. How do they control them? What if someone abuses their powers?
Anyway, its not a bad movie but I wouldn't watch it again. I preferred Coco over Encanto. The family relationship felt more developed and the focus was just on the family members relevant to the plot. The Abuela in Coco was more sympathetic and the generational trauma was way more justified there. Plus the music was better and the plot development felt more organic. I would watch Coco again. Encanto is just meh and seems a tad overrated.

My Encanto (unpopular? Idk) Opinions no one asked for
I don’t think Mariano is as “dumb” as people think he is. Like yeah I even joke around and say he’s “dumb in love” but I don’t actually think he’s absent’minded.
I’m indifferent about Camilo, I don’t hate or even dislike him, I’m just not drawn to his character. This could be why I’m not a big fan on how a lot of the fandom portray him as this “depressed identity crisis of a teenager” like I get it, as someone who struggles with my own identity and place in the world, I understand! I just don’t see Camilo this way. I feel like he KNOWS who he is, he just wishes everyone saw him as Camilo instead of “the boy who shape-shifts”. I also feel like most of his agnst comes from him trying to make everyone happy and forgetting about himself. Most of the self-image headcanons I have are for Isabela (for better or for worse). If you disagree, that’s fine!!!!
As much as I love Bruno, I’m also not a huge fan of how some of the fandom portrays him as this “little anxious man who can do no wrong uwu”. I don’t think people realize that Bruno leaving caused a lot of pain to the family just like they caused him pain. Everyone was in the wrong in some way (except the grandkids of course). It just disregards the complexities of his humanity and infantilizes him in my opinion. On a lesser extent, a lot of people seem to forget that this man is SASSY. Him being sassy and even angry doesn’t make him a villian, it’s understandable! After everything this man has been through, I don’t see him putting up with anyone’s bullshit.
Side note: making Bruno nuerodivergent and or mentally ill is not infantilizing him, that’s not what I’m referring to.
Speaking of, I don’t think Bruno or Camilo are overrated but I do think love for them overshadows the other characters A LOT. (Yes I’m guilty of this)
That’s it idk what else.

How do you feel about all the Bruno & Mirabel story’s?
I like some of them because they are black sheeps in their family and more of outsiders, especially Bruno. They understand each other.
But than I feel like some over due it, he was away for ten years and is a stranger to her, and because the story’s exists where he is her father I’m afraid it will develop into it. And I feel like sometimes they make Julieta and Agustín parents that would not try to help Mirabel, like they wouldn’t see her struggling and everything.
I found out that we have over 600 of these fics and just 166 with Julieta & Mirabel and I need more of them.
(This got longer than planned sorry for that)
I'm kinda fed up with them. I love Mirabel and I like Bruno but there are so many stories with these two it's kinda too much for me. But in general, I guess I'm just fed up with Bruno XD I feel like he's so overrated, just like Camilo, and I just skip almost every story focused on him because I don't want to even read them. It's not the authors' fault by any means, it's just a natural reaction to getting too much of something.
I just want more cool colours family content. More Julieta and her girls and Agustin and his girls, or both of them with their girls. Just quality family content, without Bruno, without Camilo, without Dolores being more like a sister to Mirabel than Luisa and Isabela, without Mirabel acting as Antonio's mother, without forgotten quinces and without Alma being a bitch.
Every time I see a fan art with baby Mirabel with Bruno, I die inside a little bit. There's close to no fanarts with Mirabel as a baby (or a teenager for that matter) with her parents; or Isabela and Luisa with them. It makes me kinda sad. I'm fed up with Bruno&Mirabel, and Camilo&Mirabel, really.

Do you have some juicy unpopular opinions about Encanto?
Not really?
The closest I've got is that I personally think Camilo and Bruno are overhyped and overrated by the fandom, but I still like them as characters.

Fuck all of the trolls who drove @carlaerosie to suicide, seriously, she was such a darling but you people no no bounds. She was just a teen and yet she acted with more grace and maturity than most of the adults on here. Truly disappointing to see just how racist and sexist the Encanto fandom is. I don’t know what other way to say it but...ENCANTO IS NOT FOR YOU. If you’re white and queer/neurodivergent than this movie is not for you.
Isabela didn’t want to marry Mariano because she didn’t love him and because she was under pressure to be perfect, NOT because she was a lesbian.
Mirabel’s rainbow on her dress may resemble the bisexual flag and her voice actress may be openly bisexual, but it’s more so to represent the warm-colored family. NOT bisexuality.
Dolores squeaks because it’s a common trait of Colombian women when hearing or sharing gossip and was actually developed as a coping mechanism so that European colonizers wouldn’t know what they were saying, it is NOT a tic!
Luisa is NOT trans, women can be buff without having been assigned male at birth and this is obviously just a way for racist transphobes(the type who are too scared to say that they see trans women and Black/brown women as men) to come up with an excuse for her strength and buffness by deciding that she is buff because she’s “male” and thus masculinizing her.
Camilo shapeshifting and suffering an identity crisis is NOT because he’s genderfluid, he has only ever been referred to as a BOY, and this one annoys me the most because at this point I honestly feel like the obsession with him being “so gender uwu” is just a tactic to hide or deny the fact that he’s male because that is the main reason you fuckers chose to obsess over HIM over the female characters, so you project traditionally feminine or gender non-conforming traits onto him so as to ignore the positive messages the female characters--as the center of the story--send about femininity! Y’all don’t care that Luisa can be both strong and feminine or that Isabela learns to embrace her own form of femininity by the end of the movie rather than the typical “not like other girls” form of female revolution, and is the pretty character of the story while also being a dark-skinned indigenous woman. No, it’s more crucial to try to force the animators to admit that Camilo might be wearing eyeshadow. I would be laughing if it weren’t actually so damn sad.
Why am I saying all this? Because the minority of the fandom who gets it, particularly Latines and other people of color, have been saying it for ages, trying to call out the Encanto fandom on their blatant, blind-sided ignorance, but they didn’t listen. @carlaerosie was one of those people, and they decided that because she was fifteen they could talk down to her and take advantage of her! And what do you know, they took her life with this stupid bullshit. Why am I saying this on my main blog which is about Black women’s issues and not my Isabela Madrigal sideblog? Because the fandom racism, sexism, and misogynoir that is so present in this fandom is fucking gross and I am tired of it. You literally killed this young Afro-Colombian teenage girl because you couldn’t handle that this movie was not for yo pasty asses and because she had the ovaries to call you out on your blatant erasure and protect and defend her culture, so you decided she deserved to die. And it makes me sick. That’s why I won’t be associating myself with the fandom for now. I am truly just so repulsed and bothered and annoyed.
I don’t have anything to say...I just need someone to talk to. If anyone’s DMs are open, I would really appreciate that. If someone else needs to talk to me, that would be a pleasure, too.
But I don’t even know what to say now...just...yeah.
I’m lost rn.

tiktok hating on camilo’s character is so funny to me bc ya we might not have gotten as much screen time w him as other characters but ???? we can clearly see what type of person he is despite his like 5 minutes of screen time and the way they’re trying to act as if he has ZERO personality and nothing of interest is just UGHHHH . in the little screen time we got of him we can tell he’s someone who loves making other’s smile and relies on his gift a lot to do that . he’s a prankster who loves teasing his family (namely isabela) . he’s extremely sweet and gentle when it calls for it (him catching and putting mirabel down in WDTAB + him trying to calm down pepa with tea) . he also deals with the pressure that alma puts on the family and considers his gift + miracle as more important to him (when him and isabela tried to save the candle and failed) . he’s a theater kid who exaggerates things for a good story (his entire verse about bruno) . and outside the movie alone it’s confirmed he has identity issues by the director himself so it’s not a “reach” as some tiktok mfs claim it to be. overall, his character is just interesting to explore so instead of wasting energy complaining that he’s more popular then so and so character just talk about so and so character ??????

come and fly away with me
AN: This is for for @AuroraRose2081 on AO3 aka @c-rose2081 Flightless & Friends Week.
Day 4: Nothing But Angst
It's a crossover between my TimeTravelAU! and c-rose2081's flightlesssAU! It's currently going to be a one-shot but I may continue it at a later date.
ch.1 don’t you be afraid (everything will change)
Mirabel did not expect to be tackled. But she really really really should have. With her luck, it was inevitable that she would be embroiled in magical shenanigans. If she could travel back farther in time to talk to her 5 year old self, she would say that having magic or dealing with it was soooo overrated.
As she stepped through the door into the light of day, she was greeted with a familiar yet unfamiliar sight. It looked like Casita and smelled like Casita but it was like looking at one of Camilo’s magical mirrors in their room. A familiar image yet distorted by the reflection. There was a large tower that wasn’t Bruno’s tower and instead had a balcony and landing area. This Casita reminded Mirabel of the large aviary that she had saw with Cass at one of the markets as it had wide open spaces. The smell of warm wood, feathers and was that her mamá’s empanadas . . .? filled the air. It’s magical signature was familiar to Mirabel but like everything else hummed slightly different from her home world. Her quick look around Casita as she looked around took a second before her eyes landed on different version of her familia and they had wings??? Eyes widened on both sides as they stared in shock at one another in the courtyard. Across the room was another Tía Pepa who had seemed to be reading to Antonio with Tío Félix nearby. Isabela, Luisa and Dolores were in the middle of a card game while her mamá and papí were having a quiet conversation on a bench with a plate of empanadas nearby. Even Abuela was in the shadow of the doorway with a bittersweet grin on her face as she watched her familia. Where was her mini me and Cami--
Before she could finish that thought a body slammed into her and attempted to grab her legs and tackle her. In auto pilot she slammed her forearm into the figures shoulder with her left arm and with her right arm stopped thin arms from looping around her legs. With a quick pivot of her body she stepped behind their body and had her arms around the persons head ready to snap their neck as her body pounded with adrenaline.
Her eyes finally took in the small form below her and “CAMILO!” bursted out of her as she took in her primo’s curly brown hair and yellow ruana. Beige and brown wings flapped as the body in her arms squirmed in fear but stopped momentarily in shock as they said, “Mirabel???” Not wanting Camilo to hurt themself trying to escape her, she released them as they stumbled away with wide eyes as they took in an older and taller Mirabel,
At the corner of her eye, a smallish figure with a candle holder hurtling toward her despite the desperate cries of “MIRABELL!” “MIRABEL!!!” “DON’T”. Casita gives a conflicted rumble but before they could intervene, Mirabel quickly dodged the swing of her mini me and used her mini me’s momentum to throw her towards the direction of Camilo who caught mini Mirabel while the rest of the Madrigals got into a defensive position.
During the commotion, Isabela, Luisa and Dolores had ran towards the older version of Mirabel and protectively blocked Camilo and Mirabel out of sight as their wings expanded in a protective snap. This Isabela didn’t look like Señorita Perfecta as her gorgeous white embroidered long sleeve and a multilayered purple skirt with red flowers on it and a straw hat. This Isabela had a protective and ferocious expression on her face as she stuck out her arms and vines started to break through Casita’s tiles to wrap around her ankles. With a shhhhht, Mirabel unsheathed her machete and with a quick swing of both arms sliced through Isabela’s vines. More vines started to erupt and Mirabel felt her strength wane as her heart pounded, she asked, “Casita, a little help here.” Casita obliged and reprimanded Isabela by lifting the tiles under her feet and broke her concentration. Quickly slashing the growing vines from tying her up, she made a move to flee through the entrance of Casita as she sheathed her machete but Luisa had rushed towards her. MIERDA! Her sister could be scary.
Spotting a pile of rope nearby, Mirabel fled in that direction with Luisa on her heels.
“Stop! Mirabel!” Luisa called behind her.
Mirabel grabbed the piece of rope and darted back towards Luisa who skid to a stop in surprise. That was all the time Mirabel needed as she wrapped the rope around Luisa fast enough to bind Luisa’s wings to her body. Luisa’s startled face met hers and she sent her sister from another world an apologetic glance not bothering to tie the rope.
Before she could flee, a gust of wind slammed her to the wall and Casita gave an apologetic mumble. Ahhh shit, that hurt. Her head throbbed at the body slam against the wall as darkness swam at the edges of her vision. As her vision was going dark she heard an angry, “PEPA! That was too much.”
“Lo siento, Juli but I didn’t want her harming anyone else.”
Isa’s voice surprised her, “She didn’t. She was just defending herself. Besides some bruises, she never made a move to use her weapons.”
The last thing she felt was a semi familiar warm hand check the back of her hair and a sigh that she recognized as her mamá’s “What am I going to do with you” sigh.
***
Julieta didn’t know what to think of this mysterious stranger that wore her daughter’s face.
It was just a regular Sunday afternoon, and for once, everyone was in the same area relaxing as they rested before the week started all over again. Pepa and Félix had decided to read to Antonio one of his favorite animal books as Parce, Antonio’s jaguar, napped nearby. Isabela, Luisa and Dolores were all playing toruro off to the side and no doubt exchanging chisme. She and Agustín were discussing one of Agustín’s favorite sci fi novels and the possibility of worlds that existed like their own (many world’s theory) or if there existed worlds that had different beginning and thus different types of people like a version of Julieta that had Pepa’s gift (multiverse theory). Her mamá was somewhere around Casita. Off to the side, Mirabel and Camilo were playing fútbol with Casita against Casita’s wall.
The appearance of an ornate green door with a candle in the middle marked with all the Madrigal familia’s symbols was odd. The green door was carved with Julieta’s mortar and pestle, Antonio’s animals, Pepa’s sun and weather motifs, Luisa’s weights, Bruno’s hourglass, Isabela’s flowers, Dolores’s sound waves and Mirabel’s Mariposa. It was enough to draw the familia’s attention and shock. Casita made no sound as if this was a regular everyday occurrence.
What was even shocking was the door opening and a person stepped out. It was . . . Mirabel???!?!? An older version of Mirabel but it didn’t look like their Mirabel. This one’s face was sharper where their Mirabel’s face was round. Her eyes were a shade darker and went from a wood to more of a cedar color. What was even more alarming was the militaristic demeanor and appearance that this Mirabel had. This Mirabel’s lovely curls were plaited into a braid that went down mid back. A dirtied white tank top, brown belt and dark green cargo pants slipped into light brown combat boots. At her hip was what looked like a sheathed machete and some knives. Her heart went into her throat at the partial view of a large scar slightly visible above the tank top that spoke of a fatal wound. How was this Mirabel alive?
This Mirabel’s sharp eyes stared at their Casita in awe and wonderment before she stiffened in surprise at the audience waiting before her. Her body unconsciously moved in a defensive position. Before Julieta could say a word, a blur of movement showed Camilo tackling this Mirabel and Julieta watched in horror as older Mirabel’s face turned cold and automatically blocked Camilo’s tackle before putting them into a head lock. From what she was told by some of the veterans from the militar, there were a few options of what could do if someone had put some one in a head lock. You could stop a person’s air flow until they were unconscious or you could shift your hands and snap someone’s neck. A hint of recognition flooded the older Mirabel’s face as she shouted “Camilo” and Camilo froze in confusion, wings out. Thankfully, this Mirabel face softened and she pushed Camilo towards Félix who steadied Camilo and took in the scene warily.
Julieta’s heart started pounded and a “Mirabel!” ripped out of her throat as she saw their Mirabel bravely try to defend Camilo who had been pushed towards their familia. She saw the older Mirabel’s eyes widened in reluctance but they managed to almost gently redirect Mirabel towards Camilo. Their Mirabel was caught and unharmed.
Julieta took a step forward but an arm held her back as Agustín, angled her head towards the girls as they stood protectively in front of Camilo and Mirabel.
The next few moments went quickly as Isa tried to tie the older Mirabel but Mirabel cut down the growing vines. Gasps rippled across the familia as Casita listened to the older Mirabel. Luisa gave her hand at trying to contain the older Mirabel with a small plea and that flicker of reluctance grew but soon the familia was shocked to see a tied up Luisa who struggled to unbound herself.
Before Julieta could use Mirabel’s full name in a desperate hope that it would stop this Mirabel from hurting anyone or running away, Pepa wings had unfurled and sent a gust of wind towards the sprinting Mirabel. Her eyes had widened in fear, panic and shock before she hit the wall with a smack. Ouch.
Seeing a Mirabel, any Mirabel, get flung against a wall caused her heart to pound and an angry, ““PEPA!” came out as she reprimanded her hermana.
“That was too much.”
Her hermana winced and a dark grey cloud hovered over her head while a curious and frightened Antonio peered from his mamá’s side. His eyes full of concern for the other Mirabel. Félix had a hand on his esposa’s shoulder and gave a comforting pat. His eyes keeping a careful eye on the downed Mirabel with an unreadable expression.
Pepa ducked her head in shame and explained, “Lo siento, Juli but I didn’t want her harming anyone else.”
An agitated Isabela crouched closer to the fallen Mirabel, her wings shuffling in agitation as she glared at her tía and said something that made them all stop cold, “She didn’t.”
At her familia’s eyes on her, she explained while gently checking the other Mirabel’s glasses and sighing in relief that they weren’t broken. She also gently checked the Mirabel over and gave a sigh of relief at the sign of a chest moving up and down. “She was just defending herself. Besides some bruises, she never made a move to use her weapons.”
Agustín was right beside Isabela and gave a “she’s right. She seemed more like she was trying to flee then fight. She could have hurt Camilo, Mirabel, Isabela or Luisa but chose the most efficient way to avoid them”.
Dolores helped Luisa untangle herself from the rope as Luisa reflexively moved her wings. Luisa’s eyes were full of concern for both Mirabels as she glanced at their Mirabel and then the older one. Their Mirabel’s face was full of curiosity and wariness. She seemed almost overwhelmed at another copy of herself.
Julieta quickly made her way and gave a sigh at the young woman who looked so much like her own daughter but so different at the same time and gave a sigh. Checking the back of the girl’s head, she was relieved to find no blood but a decent size bump on the back of her head. With Agustín and Isabela’s help, they propped her against the wall.
Isabela gently placed the glasses back on the other Mirabel’s face and adjusted them so they weren’t crooked. Their Mirabel glanced curiously at her look alike as Juileta gently checked over the older Mirabel. The large ropy scar in the middle of her chest had caused her heart to stop and her blood to run cold. Her hand hovered above the area but she could not bring herself to actually touch the scar as her mind unhelpfully supplied that it was the exit wound. This Mirabel should not be alive with what looked like a blade had sliced through her back piercing two vital organs. The heart and the lungs. She shoved that thought in the back of her head as she watched the rise and fall of her chest. Made sure to check this Mirabel’s pulse which was racing fast. Using her powers, she was distressed to find the numerous healed injuries that this Mirabel had suffered through. The most distressing of these injuries was this Mirabel’s fatal injury of an impalement, a stab wound on her left torso and a few gun shot wound on her right thigh and left shoulder. One of the more recent healed injuries was a broken shoulder blade, shoulder and collar bone.
At that point, her mamá had joined the crowd around the mysterious Mirabel to the surprise of the rest of the familia. She stared at the older Mirabel with an expressionless look but there was a slight tremble to her hands. Her eyes darting to the sheathed machete and the scarred and mirrored image of one of her nietas.
“How did this happen? What happened?” her mamá demanded.
Isa was the first to answer in a clear tone, “That door appeared over there and she stepped out. Before we could say anything, Camilo tackled her and we fought. Tía Pepa knocked her out.”
At that last sentence, Casita gave an unhappy rumble that startled the familia.
“Casita, why are you unhappy?” Abuela asked.
Casita brought over a blanket, a plate of empanadas and one of her smelling salts. With a pointed gesture, Casita lifted up the items and flapped open a tile to point at the unconscious Mirabel.
Abuela hesitated but asked, “Is she a danger to our familia? Should we tie her up?”
At that Casita made an angry grumble and shook a nearby shutter in a vehement, “NO!”
Abuela seemed taken aback at Casita’s reaction. It was clear that this Mirabel was important to Casita. Julieta took a closer look at this Mirabel’s wrists, she noticed faint scars around this Mirabel’s wrists and her hands flew to her mouth as she noticed the rope burn scars.
Slight concern appeared on Abuela’s face as she questioningly asked, “Julieta?”
“I think Casita says that this Mirabel wouldn’t react well to be tied up. She has some rope burn scars around her wrists,” Julieta explained.
“I see. Let’s wake her up and see how she got here. Luisa and Isabela, be on standby in case we need to restrain her. Félix, could you please disarm her. Dolores, please verify this Mirabel’s vital signs for any lies. Everyone besides, Julieta, myself and the others, please give some room in case anything happens.” Abuela ordered.
The familia all gave a nod as tension filled the air. Félix, quickly unbuckled her machete with its sheathe and the knives at her belt quickly. Her hijas, got ready in case this Mirabel tried anything and Dolores stood by Abuela’s side. At her mamá’s signal, she placed a smelling salt under the older Mirabel’s nose and a few seconds later, Mirabel’s eyes snapped open and she gave an involuntary inhale. Time to get some answers. [1/2] ch. 2 something’s gonna bring the change
It seemed like moments later, that Mirabel awoken. Something smelled like cat piss and Mirabel would know as she almost stepped in Parce’s pee in Antonio’s room the night of his ceremony. The smell brought her back to consciousness and she woke unable to get enough air in her lungs, a hand came into her view of vision and panic thrummed through her. Her head ached and it didn’t help that she tried to scramble back and brushed her pounding head against the wall with a wince.
“Mira. It’s ok. We’re not going to hurt you,” a different version of her mamá said gently, her eyes full of concern and her wings outspread (which was still a bizarre addition to this Mirabel). Despite her reassuring words, Mirabel’s eyes darted toward the remaining Madrigals and saw her Luisa flanking Abuela protectively but eyes full of worry. What was odd was this Isa was right by mamá with a clenched hand and her hand twitched as if she wanted to reach over and comfort her.
Her hands scrambled near her side but met open air and her eyes flickered to this world’s Tío Félix who had unholstered her weapons and had placed them behind him with Camilo, Tía Pepa, Antonio, and her tiny doppleganger watching her with cautious eyes. A flicker of green and the glint of metal, soothed the panic and fear in her chest and her body relaxed at the fact that Cass had her back. She forced her breathing to calm as she took in a breath and held it before releasing it in a puff. She did that a few times as her breathing turned back to normal.
“Here.” This version of her mamá offered out an empanada and she grasped the warm empanada and strangely familiar callused hands. Casita gave an approving rumble and she let out an amused huff.
“Casita, you’re as bad as mamá. Besides, a little warning next time would have been nice.” Mirabel told Casita.
To the Madrigal familia’s surprise, Casita tossed the blanket over to the older Mirabel so it landed right all over her upright body. Comedically, covering her whole face and front. Pulling the blanket off of her self she gave Casita a deadpan look and patted the floor as she said, “Ok, ok. I won’t give you so much attitude.” Casita gave Mirabel a small pat with one of the wall tiles that she exasperatedly huffed at. Seriously, most Casitas were almost as bad as her mamá with embarrassing and smothering her with their love.
Taking a bite of the empanada, warm pork, beef and potatoes coated her tongue and she gave a sigh of relief as her mamá’s magic washed over her body, soothing the bumps and bruises that she had received. After she finished the empanada, she stood up slowly as to not spook the other Madrigals. They tensed slightly but all eyes were glued on to her as she rose and straightened to her full height.
This abuela’s eyes were flickering between her and Casita. Her face in it’s usual authoritative mask but bewildered eyes with reddish magenta wings, white highlights and a black middle. She was a few inches taller than her abuela but Mirabel had grown since she was fifteen and was still a few inches taller than this abuela.
Not beating around the bush, Abuela asked calmly, “Who are you? And why are you here?”
Giving a wry grin as she put both arms out with palms facing upwards and a slight dip of her head, she explained, “I am Mirabel Maria Valderama Madrigal from another world and I am just passing through.”
Murmurs broke out at that as eyes widened and disbelieving stares were thrown her way. Abuela eyes flickered over to Dolores who was at her right who gave a nod. Ah. They must have been using Dolores's hearing to make sure she was telling the truth.
Disbelief shone in Abuela’s eyes and her mouth twisted into a frown. “Another world? Are you saying that there are other worlds like this one with the exact same people?”
“Yes. More or less. In my world, my familia doesn’t have wings, we just have the same gifts as you guys.” she explained, her eyes cataloguing the similarities and differences of these Madrigals and this world.
“And you? Do you have a gift?” Abuela eyed her skeptically.
“Nope,” she nonchalantly popped the “p”. “Don’t need one. Besides I learned and my novia has confirmed that magical powers are overrated.”
At that shocked inhales were heard around the courtyard and her abuela’s eyes seemed to narrow even further. Older Mirabel’s eyes flickered to her younger mirror counter part who looked at her with curiosity, fear and wonder.
Before this Abuela, could say something unintentionally hurtful, Mirabel eyes turned knowing and she could see the similar landmarks and life events that had similarly shaped this Abuela. The trauma, fear and grief that she hid underneath her mask of perfection and control.
“Abuela, Casita can vouch for me,” Mirabel stated as Casita gave a clatter of agreement, “I have no intention of hurting or harming this familia or the town. This is just a pit stop before I can get back to my current home world. If I can guess, this world is right before my home one.”
At Mirabel’s knowing eyes and the unsettling feeling that this Mirabel knew her and that her mask wasn’t fooling this Mirabel, caused Alma to step back in slight discomfort. Luisa step forward in an effort to shield this Abuela but it was unnerving looking at an older stranger with her hermana’s face. What was even more unnerving was the knowing look in her eyes as if she knew all about this familia’s trials and tribulations. Dolores glanced at this Mirabel who had such an intense and knowing gaze directed at their abuela. This Mirabel’s heart sounded off. Weaker. Her lungs straining to get enough air when she woke up that Dolores almost said something to her Tía but this Mirabel soon got it under control. But besides her initial awakening, her heartbeat had sounded calm and steady. Self assured.
Abuela shifted slightly but held on to her stern facade. “Very well. You may stay here for as long as you need before you go home. You are a guest here and I expect you to act like one. I assume, your abuela and your mamá have taught you how to behave.”
Instead of the scowl and angry expression that abuela expected, this Mirabel just smiled understandingly, “Sí, abuela. Just one thing. . .?”
Abuela had started to turn away when hearing the sí but stopped and raised a brow.
“Are you ok if my novia stays as well?” Mirabel asked.
“ ¿ Tú novia?” Abuela asked with wide eyes that turned into shock and fear as Mirabel pointed to a figure on the balcony.
On the balcony was a fierce looking woman with ebony ringlets streaked with gray that were chin length. She wore a green tunic, black cape, black pants and boots. A sword was strapped to her back. She had a bow and arrow trained on abuela and the Madrigals all tensed in preparation for a fight. Before Luisa could shield abuela, Older Mirabel told Dolores to cover her ears who nodded in understanding.
Giving a piercing whistle, Mirabel got everyone’s attention.
“It’s ok. She’s just making sure I was ok. After the previous Madrigals tried to kill us, she was just being careful.” Mirabel explained to her shocked audience. Giving Cass the “ok” signal, Cass gave a firm nod and walked down the stairs keeping a close eye on the other Madrigals. No one made a move to stop her before she walked right beside her Mirabel. With a soft look, she gave Mirabel a once over before giving her a quick chaste kiss.
“Tried to kill you guys?” Isabela choked out. A slight blush dusting her cheeks as she glanced between the two of them that shifted to horror at their remark.
“Yep. They weren’t a fan of ‘outsiders’ interfering with familia or town business,” Cass said dryly.
“I mean it is our business, when that whole familia is going to implode and innocents are going to get hurt or die. But we took care of it,” Mirabel said determinedly. The two women exchanged looks and Mirabel eyes roved over Cass’s figure who didn’t look too worse for wear. It seemed that Cass had arrived in this world shortly after she did.
The two exchanged glances, you ok? Cass asked. Mirabel gave a bitter smile , no . . . but I’ll survive. We’ll make things right with that other world. We’ll make sure that Mirabel has a chance of a better life. Cass gave her a reassuring squeeze as the tightness in her chest loosened.
The Madrigals just stared at them in shock as they tried to wrap their brains around another versions of themselves being bad enough to kill others. Abuela cleared her throat, and explained, “She may stay as well but separate rooms. It is not appropriate for the two of you to stay in the same room unless you guys are married.”
At the wince and look on Mirabel’s face, Abuela raised an eyebrow in challenge. “Thank you for your kindness, Abuela but we actually have our hammocks and gear. We’ll be camping out by the river behind Casita.”
Casita gave a disappointed grumble as the Madrigals noticed the new door that had a candle and a crescent moon above it. “Ah, sorry to disappoint Casita but we’ll be back for meals and such. We just need some space to get used to this new world but we won’t forget you.”
to be continued (in the distant or near future; i dunno)

"camilo is a great character that had so much potential and should have been explored much more during the movie"
and
"camilo is overrated inside the fandom"
are two opinions that can and should co-exist.

I want to psycho analyze the Madrigal’s gifts by the triplets’ line.
Bruno’s is the most obviously worse out of the Triplets. Physically taxing, mentally scarring in some cases, and drives a wedge between him and everyone around him. I think if Bruno had had any cannon children, their gifts would have been similarly bad. -100/10, the future is overrated.
Pepa’s line is interesting to analyze in my opinion.
Pepa has a difficult gift in the first place- she has to bottle up her own emotions to maintain a perfect weather cycle, has to force negative (in most cases) ones to change the cycle, and her bottled up emotions have a chance of exploding in a quite nasty way. I think we can see her gift’s difficulties reflected in her children’s. 2/10, I would be raining all the time, and I would give a big fat middle finger to anyone telling me “you have a cloud!”
Dolores’ is obvious in my opinion- she literally has a heightened sense tuned to what seems to be roughly a mile around the Encanto (give or take), and if she is able to concentrate on a certain set of noises, which in of itself is a difficulty, she’s left with the decision to either share or act on anything she hears. Her gift has slim to no upsides, and I’d go as far as saying that it has no upsides at all. -∞/10, even though my hearing sucks atm.
Camilos’ is a little more subtle, but certainly still prevalent- he/they literally have the ability to shift any part of their body into anyone he has a clear image of- or to even change things about his body he doesn’t like- hello, body dysmorphia?? And I can’t imagine that this ability isn’t taxing- so if he wasn’t constantly eating Tia Julieta’s miracle food, I would bet that his muscles would be sore ALL the time. And having to eat constantly to replace burned energy! -7/10, I already don’t like my face, but I don’t want to have a cure-all for it!
As for Antonio, I don’t honestly know if his gift would have huge upsides like his siblings- but I think it would be like Julieta’s side- subtle, but really serious. Antonio can understand any animal- and they’re probably more compelled to be nice to him (i hope) but that would mean that Antonio probably won’t be doing much socializing outside of his family. Possible social anxiety? He’s got a really good net of people to help him though, so I can’t honestly see much downside to his gift. 10/10, the only good rating, I want to hear gossip from animals about the humans.
And oh, ho, ho! We’ve arrived at Julieta’s side of the family!
At first glance, I think Julieta’s gift looks pretty much without downside- just eat some of her cooking and wow! No more seriously broken bone!
Two things immediately pop out to me- this hinges on Julieta’s cooking, nobody else! I’m obviously not sure how persnickety magic is, but assuming it’s extremely picky, Julieta has to do everything- that means from raw ingredients to fully cooked, and she has to make a LOT. No rest for the weary here!
Second- relying on a magical cure for sickness and injury is concerning to me in two ways. What happens in a situation where (like after Casita falls) Julieta’s cooking isn’t a heal-all? Does she know anything about identifying injuries or treating them? I’d wager very little- given how much time she has to spend preparing her magical food.
And lastly- we saw a pattern here! Julieta has no time (or very little) to do literally anything else other than working with her gift. I’d wager she’d kinda get resentful of having to cook so much- it keeps her from paying attention to people who need her, not her food! Julieta’s gift gets a -2/10 for me, and that’s with me considering that her food could remove nausea.
Isabella Perfecta- on the outside I’d see her gift as pretty damn amazing- grow any flower, make a tree speed run growing, make any garden flourish? Cool!
But I think before Isabella actively changes what she’s growing, I think she could cause more harm than good. Any non-native plant can become an invasive species, if left unchecked. Now I think this is where it gets more complicated- I have a feeling that at least a certain amount of Isabella’s abilities are linked to her emotions, and if she set her mind to it, Isabella could likely remove plants in a wide area, much more effectively than a regular person. So, meh on the oof scale.
However! Her gift is incredibly unique, and we certainly saw that she used it ALL the time, often to try to appease Abuela. Now I’m going to try not to rant about Abuela’s influence on this side of the Madrigals, but the sheer energy Isabella spent on appeasement must’ve meant physical exhaustion. On my scale I’d say 6/10, because I realized that her abilities would help curb deforestation. In terms of taxing, 5/10.
Luisa. Oh, wonderful, beautiful Luisa.
I don’t have a lot to say really, your gift means you’re expected to do all the heavy lifting. You’re taken advantage of to move a building (seriously why did they have her move the church? No enough godly light??) and other things that HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING MOVED! REROUTING A RIVER IS NOT A THING TO BE DONE BY ONE PERSON!
This also means you’re away from the people you want to spend time with- you can pry my thoughts about how much Luisa loves her little sister from my cold dead hands, I’m a last child, I know how older siblings (with 5+ age gap) really want to treat their siblings, and it’s to play/spend time with them at the drop of a hat.
On top of all this? Her entire mental image of herself is being able to serve others in increasingly over complicated ways. She lost her cool at the dinner because she couldn’t do what a GUEST asked her to do. If I was the head of a household and my guest asked my (overpowered and certainly capable) child to move a large object for their own whim, I would kick them out! (Seriously! Mariano is fine, but Señora Guzman is on thin fucking ice!)
In my terms, Luisa’s gift is a 3/10, and that’s because she’s gotta have a heightened balance ability somewhere in there too.
And finally, Mirabel. Oh Mirabel, I literally sobbed every time you felt the gap between you and your family members- as a third child, you are so relatable and it broke my heart!
As a giftless Madrigal, you were seen less than, maybe not intentionally- but the feeling of uselessness was constantly being projected onto you, just because those with gifts wouldn’t allow you to help.
Because of that feeling of uselessness, I think Mirabel overcompensated- tried to do things that would “make my family proud”, show that she’s just as special as the rest of her family, and she shouldn’t be pushed aside just because she has no gift.
However, in a way, I think the lack of a gift saved Mirabel a lot of pain- the pain of never being enough, not if she couldn’t stretch herself to her very limits just to make people happy.
My diagnosis? Mirabel’s lack of a gift is a 8/10, and it’s only an 8 because no gift caused her so much pain.
Long story short, I think that the Madrigal’s family followed a pattern in gift types/burdens, and in the end I would call the gifts the drawback of creating a safe haven. They might be cool, but I would not want a Madrigal’s gift for myself, not even if it meant clear skin.

unpopular encanto opinion- camilo and bruno are super overrated and boring.
Strongly Agree | Agree | Don’t Know | Neutral | Disagree | Strongly Disagree
***
I agree, the only part of this I disagree with is Bruno being boring. Personally, I find him interesting, especially when analyzing and comparing him to Mirabel, as they share a lot of parallels in their stories.
As for Camilo, I don’t hate him, but I think as far as the actual canon story goes he is the least interesting Madrigal, which is part of the reason I think he gets alot of attention from the fandom because he pretty much is a blank slate.
I do wish they would pay more attention to the other characters more, especially the females, because it’s rare we get a cast of this many women of color.

Writing thoughts: Nothing In This World (1/?) - Bruno’s illness
I’ve been saying I want to ramble about my writing on this blog for literal years and never actually follow through. Paired with the fact that I frequently type up author notes for chapters and then remove them because they’re too long, well. It’s time.
Fandom: Encanto Type: Canon divergence, Bruno&Mirabel-centric (Bruno takes Mirabel and flees the Encanto) Link: here (first three chapters, at this point).
This will contain minor spoilers for both the posted chapters and the story as a whole.
I’ve been asked in multiple comments what exactly causes Bruno’s chronic illness and his rapid decline in the first chapters of the story. My idea of him being chronically ill because his visions mess with his body originally came from a combo of Jared Bush implying that his visions can be physically painful and me somehow writing various disabled characters into all my fics (of course, Bruno is also canonically disabled since he has OCD, and he’s autistic in my fic, but that’s a subject for another post).
In the movie, Bruno’s power is the only one that’s both active (as opposed to Luisa’s, Dolores’s, Antonio’s or even maybe Julieta’s) and apparently fully controllable (Pepa, Camilo and Isabela all lose control while shocked or emotional), so it seems to be a bit of an outlier. But we also see very little of it, and Bruno hasn’t been using it for 10 years, so we don’t know a lot about it.
For this story, my headcanon is that Bruno’s power was never meant to be used the way he uses it. Playing with time is something serious, and visions of the future seem like something you should kind of reserve for grave events, not predicting the death of a goldfish. So his power, as given by the miracle, is supposed to be relatively uncontrolled and fairly rare visions that warn them of impending catastrophes. But under Alma’s overbearing expectations, Bruno learned to exert a huge amount of control over it and see other people’s future.
The side effect of that misuse of his power is that it’s destroying his nervous system. Each vision is physiologically similar to a seizure. While he had Julieta’s cooking on hand, it healed some of the after effects (in my mind, her gift only accelerates the body’s natural healing, it doesn’t heal everything). But the damage builds up and once Bruno left, his gift also became harder to control and access the furthest he was from the candle.
His symptoms are all neurological (brain fog, fatigue, loss of muscle tone, shaking hands, dizziness/nausea, nerve pain, and some you haven’t seen yet). I took inspiration from a number of neurological conditions, especially ME/CFS, epilepsy and strokes. I purposefully stayed away from vision-related symptoms because the blind seer trope is seriously overrated (and often ableist), but it does to some extent affect his senses as well, and his short-term memory.
People who’ve read my fics before already know this, but since this is a new fandom for me: Bruno’s happy ending will not be him being “cured”. I want to get him to a place where his illness is manageable and not immediately life-threatening, but he will remain chronically ill, just like he’ll always be autistic and have OCD.

Pepa & Lillith for character meme
I’m glad my love of the owl house hasn’t been forgotten despite this blogs change
Pepa
1- Favourites thing(s) about this character?
She’s a lot of fun! I like her energy. She makes me love the color yellow again. She’s very pretty. I love her outfit. I love her personality. She was an initial favorite of mine as well because I was really interested in her gift, and the subsequent anxiety and emotional issues she clearly has because of it. I love her relationship with Félix. We don’t see too much about her with Dolores and Camilo, but we see how much she cares when she’s worrying about Antonio. Also love that she’s absolutely ready to give in and talk about Bruno despite acting like she didn’t want to.
2- What song(s) remind you of this character?
I have a few, but I’m gonna say Second Child, Restless Child by The Oh Hellos for now.
3- Do you like this character?
Pls look at my url. Look at my icon. Look at my top posts. You tell me.
4- Would you write about this character?
I have and will continue to do so!
5- What do you not like about this character?
How dare you ask me that
6- Favourite thing this character has said?
I answered this here
7- What do you like most about this character?
Her frazzled anxious energy was something I related too tbh! Then the more I paid attention to her every time I rewatched, I just fell in love with her personality and her ways of showing affection, as well as her kinda petty and dramatic nature!
8- Do you think this character is underrated or overrated?
Refer to question 6
9- What’s your favourite headcanon(s) for this character?
I know a lot of people say they believe she actually is in control of the weather, but she lets her emotions control her. I think her emotions DO control the weather, but the actual problem is the way she’s been taught to associate different types of weather with specific emotions. If she could see the positives and negatives of all weather, it would allow her better control no matter what emotion she’s feeling.
10- Who do you like to ship with this character? (If you do of course) Is it another character from the cast or is it an OC?
Me. Félix of course.
11- Who do you not like to ship with this character?
I thin we know the answer by now based on the rest of these character asks.
12- Have you read any fics about this character? (if it’s not an OC)? Can you recommend anything good?
Bestie buckle tf up
First of all, shameless self promos here:

Clear Skies, Pepa Madrigal
little cloud
14- What outfit would you really like to see this character wear? Or what’s your favourite outfit of theirs?
Pls I’m just in love with her dress, and all the little details in it. The sun pattern around her neck, the lighting bolts on the hair band and near the bottom of the skirt, the ver subtle raindrop pattern across most of the dress. It’s got a lot of cool details
16- What do you think would improve this character? Like, character-arc wise?
We can probably assume how she got to suppressing her emotions, and how clear skies became her thing to calm down, but I think I’d be interesting to learn more about the events in her life that lead to her feeling unable to really express herself.
17- Have you ever had a crush on this character…?
Look at me. Look me in the eyes. Look at my blog. You have your answer.
18- What’s something you associate this character with? E.g. a certain colour, object or scenery?
Sounds of thunder, sun showers, the whole spectrum of colors in a sunrise or sunset, braided hair, the feeling of laying on the pavement while it rains, the sound of raindrops hitting the roof, bright yellow, sunflowers,
19- What would the show/book/movie be like if this character wasn’t present? (if it’s not an OC)
Who else is gonna lead her whole half of the family in a choreographed musical number to tell Mirabel about Bruno?? Julieta?? I think not! We need Pepa so she can learn more about Bruno.
21- Wild card! Talk about anything to do with this character! Anything at all!
I’d really like to explore her relationship with Julieta more as well. I think they would’ve been compared to each other often as kids, with Julieta being favored by others, and I think Pepa would have some built up resentment about it, even if she doesn’t want to. It’d be interesting to see them talk it out. I also think Julieta may have missed out on a lot of her childhood for the sake of Bruno and Pepa, and this could be something Pepa never really realized, so I’d be interested in how that kind of talk would go down as well.
Lilith Clawthorne
1- Favourites thing(s) about this character?
I love a good morally gray character, especially one who starts on the bad side and realizes what they’ve done wrong, and strives to improve themself! I love how she’s become a happier person, and has really shown more of her true personality after leaving the Emperor’s Cult Coven. She fucked up real bad, but overall she truly deeply cares about her sister.
2- What song(s) remind you of this character?
I’ll Be Good by Jaymes Young
3- Do you like this character?
Yes absolutely! A fave from the owl house. I’ve literally cosplayed her.
4- Would you write about this character?
I have already!! Several fics about her on my ao3, they’re not the greatest but they sure are there.
5- What do you not like about this character?
Lilith, honey, bby, you’re a little dumb. This whole mess could’ve been avoided if you just talked to your sister as kids. Also you tried to chase fire bees with a wooden stick. I love you still tho.
6- Favourite thing this character has said?
“I am a witch, UNHINGED!” But also at the end of Separate Tides you can hear her say “things are finally starting to feel alright again” and i love that cause you have to wonder how many years it’s been since she’s been able to feel that way, like 30+ probably.
7- What do you like most about this character?
She’s complex, and while she can never undo the things she did, I think she’s really genuinely trying to be better for her sister, for the people around her and for herself as well.
8- Do you think this character is underrated or overrated?
Hmm not one or the other, She got a LOT of hate in season 1, but now a lot of people love her.
9- What’s your favourite headcanon(s) for this character?
Omg it’s been awhile since I’ve had to think about this. Always a fan of the idea that she had a petty past relationship with Odalia, and the two fucking hate each other now. It makes for good humor. Also I love the headcanon that Lux gave Lilith the low battery shirt, told Eda the joke, and Lilith still has no clue what the joke is.
10- Who do you like to ship with this character? (If you do of course) Is it another character from the cast or is it an OC?
Lilith x self-improvement
11- Who do you not like to ship with this character?
Belos, Hooty.
12- Have you read any fics about this character? (if it’s not an OC)? Can you recommend anything good?
It’s been awhile but here’s some good ones I remember
Famous Last Words
Heavy Is The Head That Wears The Crown
we can’t function alone
living arrangements, shovel talks
Accidentally An Aunt
14- What outfit would you really like to see this character wear? Or what’s your favourite outfit of theirs?
Give me them a badass new wild witch Lilith outfit okay!! The battery shirt is humorous, but I need her to kick it up a notch and accept her newfound wild witch nature and look like a bad ass like Eda.
16- What do you think would improve this character? Like, character-arc wise?
She had many opportunities to talk with her sister before things got so much worse. I’d love to see her become someone who takes action way more often, and doesn’t hesitate because she’s scared of what will happen to her.
17- Have you ever had a crush on this character…?
yes absolutely!
18- What’s something you associate this character with? E.g. a certain colour, object or scenery?
Royal blue, round glasses, ravens, well-loved books and well-used notebooks, night skies,
19- What would the show/book/movie be like if this character wasn’t present? (if it’s not an OC)
Would Eda even be the Owl Lady?
21- Wild card! Talk about anything to do with this character! Anything at all!
Tbh I’m still worried that since she went to be with her mother, that it’s a way to keep audiences from really thinking about what she’s up to/worrying about her, and then bam we gonna found out she’s held hostage by the Emperor’s Coven or something. Especially cause I think Belos may have a stronger grudge against her for betraying him.
