final battle | day seven of ofa legacy week

Look, I don’t wanna get everyone’s hopes up, but I might have to get everyone’s hopes up

My initial thoughts on chapter 395 were to be enveloped in the tragedy of this ending. I could already tell some of the criticisms that would come at it, but I was also interested in thoroughly considering the chapter as fairly as possible. Whether or not it involves stale tropes, such tropes still have the potential to bring meaning and emotion--and to be honest, MHA has been pretty good at that since the get-go. The manga is pretty much defined by refreshing and playing with stale shounen tropes. I am willing to give this chapter as-is a chance. I comforted friends who were hit hard by the chapter. I allowed myself to feel the sorrow ushered in by Himiko Toga’s chosen end.

But then I started translating the chapter, and my melancholy didn’t last fucking long.

Because...I’m gonna be real with you, there are a LOT of questions this chapter raises, but only if you’re paying attention.

So like.

Look.

I don’t wanna get your hopes up.

Himiko Toga may really be dead.

I don’t actually know how this will all play out.

But...

LET ME TELL YOU WHY THIS IS SUS AS HELL

1. Hello???

Why is the All Might doll coming into play here, now?

And uh, where did it go????

I don’t see it anywhere! Is it...still in the same hand Himiko was holding it with?

Is THAT why we’re zooming in here on the final panel?

“Why does it matter?” you may ask. “Isn’t it just a symbol of the connection between these two girls once Himiko found where Ochako was hiding it and teased her about it? Isn’t this perhaps just Himiko’s way of comforting Ochako?”

“Hm, yes, interesting,” I would reply. “But DON’T YOU WHO THE FUCK I AM?”

This is the second time All Might merchandise is appearing in a supposed death scene! Is it mere coincidence? I THINK NOT.

I mean, we haven’t had a SINGLE update on Katsuki for a year now. (UNLESS WE JUST GOT ONE?) Could it be Horikoshi was holding off on any Katsuki updates to avoid spoiling something else that needed to happen first? Specifically Ochako vs Toga?

Because if there’s ANYTHING fishy going on with that card and that doll (and boy do I smell fish), Katsuki’s storyline would not be able to progress until AFTER the doll also came into play. AND NOW IT HAS.

2. Of course my first thought was Katsuki Bakugou, don’t tell me you’re actually surprised...

There are a LOT of weird parallels between Ochako and Himiko’s fight and...whatever the hell is going on with Izuku and Katsuki just in general. But I mean, just look at Katsuki. Compare that wound to Ochako’s. Compare Ochako’s imminent death to Katsuki.

And...compare Himiko Toga to Katsuki Bakugou however many ways you like.

But most importantly...compare Himiko Toga to Izuku Midoriya.

Because Ochako was on the verge of death, and Himiko Toga sacrifices herself to save Ochako. Yeah, you can compare that to Katsuki in chapter 362. But like, Katsuki is the one on the verge of death now, right? That would make him parallel to Ochako (especially since they’re the ones with the All Might merch). That would mean Izuku could do something similar to save Katsuki.

And please, please note how Himiko performed this rescue. She became Ochako. She became compatible with Ochako, started pumping Ochako’s same blood through her own veins, hooked them up so not only was Himiko supporting Ochako’s life, THEY WERE CONNECTED AS ONE PERSON.

Are YOU getting Heroes Rising vibes? Because I’m definitely getting Heroes Rising vibes.

3. Remember, Horikoshi said this ending would be better than Heroes Rising.

Izuku and Katsuki shared OFA in the ending of Heroes Rising.

Let us not forget the ever-present nomenclature of One For All and All For One.

What could be better than a team-up of two people?

Maybe...a merging of everyone?

4. Everyone is down

Himiko and Ochako and Katsuki aren’t the only ones down. Basically EVERYONE is.

Shouto, Endeavor, Touya, Hawks, Tokoyami, Spinner, most everyone at the UA battlefield, most everyone at the Gunga battlefield, basically most everyone who isn’t AFO, All Might, Izuku, and Tomura (and maybe a few UA kids).

Actually, speaking of UA kids, why haven’t we seen Aoyama and Sero and the others yet? Could it be that Horikoshi just wanted to showcase the most important part of their fights, aka the ending?

The ending where they all fall over and pass out or die too?

Why is everyone fucking dead?

Because something big is going to happen to them all after they pass out???

I mean, maybe???

Even if that’s the case, I have no idea how many people will actually be part of this union or revival or whatever the fuck happens. I just...I do notice that heroes and villains both are dropping like flies.

WHAT IS THIS LEADING TO?

5. The story of how we all became the greatest heroes

So once upon a time I wrote a tiny meta about the infamous line from the first chapter, “This is the story of how I became the greatest hero.”

Basically, it occurred to me that it’s very strange for the narrator to “spoil the ending” of the story in the first chapter. Where’s the dramatic tension? Why even do that?

Well, the obvious answer is: it wasn’t a spoiler. Perhaps it meant something else than what it seemed at first glance.

I realized “hero” in Japanese could be both singular and plural. Thus, I conceived that the true message was: “This is the story of how I became ONE OF the greatest heroes.“

Chapter 324 basically confirmed that theory.

But...what if it’s still wrong?

What if there’s ANOTHER hidden message in the line?

What if it’s something like: “This is the story of how I became a part of the greatest hero.” Singular. Purposefully.

What if EVERYONE becomes the greatest HERO literally. What if...everyone merges to create...All Might?

And then I saw all the vestiges rebelling inside AFO and thought:

Oh god this actually seems plausible now.

So here’s the good news for Himiko...

There was, in fact, a chapter titled “The Story of How We All Became Heroes, Part Minus 1.”

Maybe everyone becomes heroes together. Maybe they all literally become one hero together. Either way, Himiko was highlighted in a chapter with a title that specifically implied she would be part of whatever the fuck happens.

Sure, this chapter COULD BE Himiko’s heroic moment. But...I don’t know man. We got SO MANY CHAPTERS with this title. It’s SCREAMING some sort of plot twist is on the way...!

6. Ochako is ALSO supposed to be part of this “greatest hero” business too!

Finally, can we just...remember how Ochako was inspired to save people? She held Sir Nighteye in her arms as he died, and that’s when she knew she wanted to save people.

Himiko dying here on Ochako’s watch...idk mannnnn, has Ochako really proven that she’s achieved her goal yet? Can she really be part of the greatest heroes like this?

Your Handy-Dandy Guide to TomurAFO, part 2! (warning: spoilers up to ch. 370+)

Making a part 2 bc I've seen too many folks treating Tomura and AFO like they're equally culpable for TomurAFO's actions-- or even more bafflingly, blaming Tomura for actions that the narrative is very, very, very explicitly attributing to AFO.

Anyway-- I’ll start by saying that trying to navigate the current state of TomurAFO while thinking that Tomura has any form of *actual* control in their dynamic is being…. really, really generous. And also incorrect. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

None of TomurAFO’s cognizant actions are currently being driven by Tomura. It’s easier to think of TomurAFO in terms of being like a soup of some sort— the stock/broth is all AFO, but when you stir it up the right way, you get different little pieces of vegetables floating to the surface (i.e. Tomura/Tenko). But it doesn’t stop being a soup just because you stirred the pot a little!

At any rate, Horikoshi has spent almost 100 chapters now giving us dedicated tells to help us make distinctions between AFO and Tomura. The boundary between the two is muddier than ever, yes— but these tells exist because Hori wants you to try and make a distinction between the two. He wants you to attribute certain statements/actions to either AFO or Tomura.

As an artist and a writer, Hori has put a lot of love into depicting all those little distinctions— which makes it all the more frustrating to see people ignoring all of it because they don’t feel it matters, or because they don’t like or care about Tomura’s character. So out of respect for the love Hori has poured into his depiction of Tomura, I’ll break things down brick by brick.

Starting with the basics: body language!

Hm. Don’t Like That.

To preface: Evidence that Tomura was groomed to mimic AFO’s mannerisms while in “villain mode” was present all the way back in act 1, and should make for some nice retroactive horror for anyone who decides to reread. AFO really wanted Tomura to fit like a tailor-made glove! (And it’s also a decidedly uncute parallel of Izuku’s attempts at mimicking All Might’s gestures/mannerisms/moves). 

Tomura’s tendency towards mimicking AFO’s mannerisms both intentionally and unconsciously can make it difficult to tell which persona is at the forefront, but thankfully Hori gives us a lot of other distinctions and context clues to bounce off of. Like their personal pronouns, speech patterns, and even expressions.

Looking at Tomura's natural, mostly AFO-free habits/mannerisms:

Tomura au naturel.  

Tomura’s natural body language is a lot more “relaxed” and decidedly un-theatrical-- We see him casually lounging, stretching before fights, kicking at things he thinks are gross (racists, overhaul), and basically acting like a bored teen on all fronts. He tends to slump and slouch over himself while keeping his hands close to his body instead of using them as a means of “communicating” with grand, ~sweeping~ gestures like AFO does (and there’s something to be said about the different ways AFO and Tomura view their hands and how that has an effect of their respective mannerisms-- AFO views his hands as an extension of his power and uses large/wide/bold gestures to communicate that. Tomura views his hands as  inherently destructive and tends to keep them folded close to himself while visibly going out of his way to handle everything he *wants* to touch as gently and carefully as he possibly can-- unless you've unwisely decided to throw hands with him, in which case, he'll get you in a five-fingered grasp without the slightest hesitation).

Now, for AFO's body language:

So we all agree that AFO was a theater kid, right.

*touches his chest when he lies about his intentions, touches his chest when he lies about his emotions, touches his chest when he lies about his plans, touches his chest when he's trying to surpress the unruly ghost of his metaphorically ten year old hostage--* Interesting character tic you've got there, AFO.

Well, the less said about this guy, the better. I will point out one thing that interests me in particular about their contrasting body language, though:

That is, I find the difference in how Hori depicts "open palms" between the two (plus a bonus one shot Tenko!) to be an interesting point of discussion on the massive difference between AFO and Tomura's inner natures.

Holding one’s palms out in this particular fashion is usually meant to be interpreted as a “pleading” or “begging” gesture. It’s a gesture that's meant to convey a feeling of complete honesty and a desire for mercy/acceptance. To quote: "Palm displays signal to others that you want to both offer an idea or accept an idea. This is the cue used when people want to show that they sincerely believe that they are correct and wish to plead with others to accept their opinion. The palm-up cue is used to appease and we present it when we’re putting ourselves at risk. In evolutionary terms, the palm display is an important gesture signifying honesty because it is a way to make evident to others that no threat or weapon is present (such as a spear, sword or bow and arrow). Palms up while gesturing is also highly effective in building rapport."

Basically: Tomura's body language reveals his true desires, while AFO's body language obfuscates his true desires. Tomura claims he no longer cares about being understood, while his body language instead communicates that he is -s t a r v i n g- for even a shred of acceptance or understanding from the heroes. AFO's open palms feign acceptance and honesty while communicating a silent threat-- he exposes his palms when he wants to draw attention to his power and the tell-tale "identifiers" of his quirk.

Expressions and speech:

HM. DON'T LIKE THAT.

I could completely derail this post with pictures of Tomura's various expressions, but it would ultimately amount to me just saying "See?? Him face," over and over again. So we'll take a look at AFO instead.

As you can see, Hori's absurd attention to detail also extends to how he depicts AFO's expressions/shit-eating grins lol. The dimples and the squinty, bargain-bin attempt at bedroom eyes alone are a dead giveaway that AFO is the one driving the TomurAFO train. As is his tendency to get embarrassingly long winded-- whereas base!Tomura really only gets chatty when he's spiraling or, again, subconsciously mimicking AFO. Outside of his very public mental breakdowns and various LARPing sessions as AFO's villain king OC, Tomura leans more towards being a sparse talker who expects people to instantly catch his meaning or understand his plans without him having to over explain himself. Some choice examples below:

Twice and Toga call him out for his failure to properly communicate his intentions during the Shie Hassaikai arc, which prompts Tomura to take a step back and explain himself in a way they'll understand. This grievance re: Tomura's poor communication skills is later repeated by Spinner, and Tomura again repeats his process of taking a step back to explain himself (albeit not to Spinner directly, but Spinner definitely interprets it as a response to his earlier grievances).

A Look at Their Respective Fighting Styles:

“AFO stop fucking eating people” challenge status: failed

Another thing I love that distinguishes these two: Their fighting styles! At a glance, Tomura may seem more animalistic/instinctual when he fights-- but AFO’s way of fighting is actually far more barbaric once you scratch away his surface grace. None of his attacks are designed to kill instantly, nor does he instantly go for the kill-- instead, he opts to rip, stab, and skewer people while tearing them to pieces by the mouthful.

Also, the fact that AFO is depicted as gleefully eating others while Tomura is depicted as vomiting and constantly nauseous while he kills and destroys the world around him sure is an..... interesting touch. never gonna beat those Cronus allegations.

This also reinforces their respective bodily imagery and motifs-- with Tomura obviously being tied to "hands" (both as a tool for violence and as a representation of his desire to be saved/held), while AFO is tied to "mouths" and the continuous consumption/cannibalization of others. It's not a coincidence that TomurAFO begins sprouting mouths in all the wrong places as his fight with the UA fortress group intensifies and AFO gains more and more control over Tomura's soul-- nor is it a coincidence that the "mouths" are the ones responsible for some of the most gruesome damage to the heroes.

AFO, Tomura, & their influence over TomurAFO's form:

When the pot of TomurAFO soup finally gets stirred enough (i.e. when the heroes start tap dancing on Tomura/Tenko's trauma buttons), we see a drastic shift in influence-- that is, Tomura begins to exhibit more influence over the form his body takes, and that influence almost completely eclipses AFO. He sheds the countless mouths entirely, grows appendages that resemble his family, and adopts a purely defensive form made up entirely of hands/fingers (I'll also take this chance to point out how transparent it is that Tomura adopts a falsely muscular form that almost resembles a child's idea of prime!All Might, and proceeds to use several explicit SMAAASHes against the heroes. "You can play as All Might, Ten-chan," indeed :') ). There's a lot to unpack with this scene + the subsequent scenes, so I'll..... save it for another post. *shrug*

Are we acknowledging vestiges as representations of a person's soul by this point? Meh.

*muffled 'In the arms of an angel' playing in the background*

Hori goes out of his way to depict the differences between AFO and Tomura’s “inner selves,” too-- with AFO’s inner self being depicted as a giant cannibalistic monster, while Tomura’s inner self looks like he needs to be rescued from a puppy mill. As always, Hori is giving subtlety the middle finger in his depiction of "who is the abuser" and "who is being abused."

Anyhoo, I'll post a chapter-by-chapter breakdown of some of the more "ambiguous" TomurAFO scenes at a later date, with a special focus on the scenes leading up to the death of you-know-who.

the way you characterize them— i'm in love pls teach me ur ways hnggrhhhn. i have never, and i mean never, read a silly anime fic with so much depth to each and every character! like i never expected MONOMA would play a big-ish part in your plot lmao. I never even thought about how rei, whilst trying her best to raise shouto, might have consequently neglected her other children. Asks like these get me in the writing mood again. I'm half-way through the next chapter. It's taking me a bit longer because I'm keeping an eye out on Horikoshi's storyline with the Todoroki's and am introducing a kind of controversial character far earlier than they are introduced in the manga.

We're going to divide the story into two Act--the first being the Todoroki Act, which is the reason for Izumi's rage mode and our story will tie up the loose ends here first, before progressing to the AFO Act. I'm actually pretty excited and drafting/plotting the future chapters with the new Information we get every week, so I'm being a bit slower on the WHD side of things.

↛ he absolutely loves it when you wear his shirts, like— i’m sure you know which one im talking about. the one that says ‘t シャツ’ i don’t know! his fashion sense isn’t the MOST fashionable, and the t-shirt itself isn’t very appealing to most eyes, but he absolutely adores how it looks on you. look, you can be the tallest being on this earth, to the point it makes his shirt look like a crop top on you, or you could be literally 4’5 and make the shirt look like a dress, he doesn’t care at all. he just loves how it looks on you, it makes him feel all warm on the inside, kinda like a *heart squeeze* moment, y’know? and no, there’s no exaggeration. he’ll just stop, and look at you when you wear his shirt. it’s just so personal, and he loves it.

↛ honorable mention — though sweaty, his hero costume, and literally any other piece of clothing he has.

↛ then again, you could literally wear any kind of clothing of his, and you could have a ring adorning that finger of yours by the end of the day. he likes to pretend he’s absolutely not infatuated by the way his clothes look on you. if you force him to say what’s his favorite, he’ll mutter out ‘black tanktop’ because how could he not say that?? have you seen how delectable you look in that tanktop of his? it’s a surefire way to render him speechless, from the moment you walk into the room, to the moment you leave it— those gorgeous red irises will be on you. similar to midoriya, katsuki doesn’t care if you’re tall or short— just,,, wear his clothes, and if you want to seal in the future, then the black tanktop is the way to go. because he’ll probably get mad at you if you don’t wear his clothes to bed

↛ honorable mention — shouto’s button up shirt from his old hero costume, even though his old hero costume was HIDEOUS

↛ in his opinion, he loves anything on you (yeah, even a trashbag) but he does really love how you wear his turtle neck, he loves the fit. how it either loosely fits on you, or how it snuggly hugs your form— it really doesn’t matter. anything you wear would look really high end in his opinion, quite literally anything. but his black turtle neck really takes the cake. oh boy, when he saw you wear it for the first time, he froze up and almost charred his feet, cheeks firing up a warm red to match his scar. he has the money to buy a bunch of replicas of that exact black turtle neck, and he could give it to you but,, no. how could he do that? how do you look absolutely stunning in such a simple turtle neck? he doesn’t really know. anyways! he eventually ends up unofficially making the turtle neck yours, and he only wears it when he needs to douse his scent into the fabric once more— when it has almost completely faded away.

↛ his boxers. there, i’ve said it— and wait for a sec, let me explain. it’s not what you think, and you’d expect it to be like that but no, it’s not. at first, he thought you looked great in something simple as his sweater, or shirts but you were running out of clothes during laundry day— so you rummaged through your boyfriend’s clothing drawer, and pulled out a pair of red boxers, with black trimming. when he saw it peaking under your oversized shirt, he swear he saw the heavens. and from that moment on, you found yourself frequently wearing his boxers, but more specifically that pair. no, i’m serious— eijirou will get all pouty if you actually don’t wear his boxers, even when most of them are in the laundry. why does he like them so much? hm,, maybe it’s the security, and knowing that he’ll be the only one to see you in his boxers.

↛ his shorts. yes, they’re not the same as his boxers, but they’re the kind of shorts that you lounge in. now, i know you thought i was going to say “ooo he’s love to see you in a sweater with a lighting bolt embroidered in the middle!!”but then, the thing with these shorts was that he’s literally had them since he was in what,, the end of middle school im surprised they still fit, but they’re so dear to him? in a way that seeing you in those exact shorts makes his heart stop— only for it to start up again. thing with these shorts is that they’re oddly so,, pretty? i mean, his wardrobe is so questionable, but these shorts? there’s a mini reflective lighting bolt logo imprinted on the corner of the shorts. so quite literally, you’re seen with these shorts a lot— and the bakusquad give him hell for that 💀

↛ his hero costume, because well,, it’s very fashionable! but it doesn’t really look like he’s such a big fan of the entire ‘i wear your clothes!’ thing. because his clothes are his clothes, and your clothes look good on you anyway, end of the story! but if you do force him to say anything, he’ll admit that he does love seeing you in his hero costume. neito once walked in on you wearing his hero costume, and as to be expected— he made fun of you, but he did really like how it looked on you. but i suppose that’s the power you have on him, and he’ll admit it when he wants to, otherwise— he’s just teasing you for now. but pls wear it :,) he’ll basically be at your feet for the entire time

↛ honorable mention — a black sweater that has a silhouette of a purple cat printed at the center. it’s his favorite sweater, that’s why.

↛ his sweatpants. you and hitoshi had to switch clothes for a dare at a sleepover, and when he saw you in his lounging sweatpants, that’s what did him in. ever since then, he’s been quite obsessed with seeing you in them. hitoshi could care less about the sizing aspect, he just loves seeing you in his sweatpants— and it is quite a treat to come back from an especially gnarly day at school, and to be greeted by you lounging in his clothes, ‘instant recharge’ he says. he finds himself toying with the string of the sweatpants, when you’re on his lap, pressing kisses on his cheeks. anyways— if you want to kill him even more, then you should wear his sweater AND his sweatpants. he might as well just lock you in his room for him to keep forever (he’s not serious about that.) but it does surprise some people, because they never would’ve expected shinsou hitoshi to be the clingy/needy type. but you’re the only one that gets to see it indoors.

↛ honorable mention — his button up shirt, i’m sure theres a gif of him wearing one in the anime somewhere, and i hope you know what i mean

↛ not really a clothing article he wears on the daily, but his cape. omg his cape. he sort of glitched out when he came back from interning, and saw you snuggling on the couch with his cape. like,, are you trying to unalive him? and he’s not slick about it either— everytime he comes back, and sees you using his cape as a blanket, draped over your shoulders, he nearly faints. it’s that intense, that’s why nejire and mirio brought his hero costume’s cape and gave it to you when it was time to sleep— he couldn’t get a wink of sleep because of the image of you with his cape, ugh! anyways, he does manage to leave it with you when he has to go away for a bit, because it says that it’s almost like he’s there with you. tamaki usually has to scramble on why he doesn’t have his usual cape.

Overhoe finally broke out of Tartarus after a very long time. However, he couldn't have done it without the help of a certain villain mistress. 😏 Who's she and why did she choose to help this terrible (x2) man? Find out bellow.

Overhaul couldn't remember how long he'd been there, he'd lost count weeks ago. The only thing he knew was that he was in "Tartarus", a prison located 5km off the coast of the Mainland. It may function like a conventional prison, but in reality, those who're deemed a severe threat toward the safety of the nation were locked up and monitored closely, regardless of whether their sentence has been decided on yet. The facility was divided into 6 levels, where the potential threat level of criminals was deemed "higher" the further underground you go. It's a prison where, once you enter, there's no chance of leaving.

He sat there in his cell, B10 being the lowest level in solitary confinement. It was too cold for his head to function and too dark for his eyes to see, with the small window above the prison doors being his only source of light. There was also an opening where prisoners received their meals, but considering that he lost his hands, the guards could easily enter without worrying too much for their well-being. They'd leave whatever they offered that day and give him a disgusted look before locking the doors after themselves. He couldn't see his reflection nor touch his face, he probably looked like crap by now. His skin was itching and he felt disoriented from all the germs occupying this space, it's been a while since he's gone out for some fresh air. 

He was practically Quirkless and yet they locked him out in the worst, most dreadful place the isolation block had to offer. He couldn't even feed himself properly, he couldn't do anything by himself whatsoever. But there was only one thing left to him; he spent days and days thinking about pops, Chrono, yakuza and everything he could have if it weren't for those stupid heroes-- no, if it weren't for his plan that so grandiosely failed. It made him feel miserable, desperate even, and with grief soon followed acceptance. It was all his fault, and he needed to live with this burden for the rest of his life. Because of him, pops is still handicapped to the bed somewhere, wherever the heroes might have taken him. 

He stood up and started beating the cell with his leg, curing his frustrations. He didn't know why he was doing it, it was irrational and he's hurting himself unnecessarily, but for some reason it made him feel lighter. At least he could transfer some of his inner pain to the outside world. Other criminals laughed at his patheticness, especially since they knew why the guards were allowed to enter his cell. They shouted that it was impossible to escape, but he wasn't trying to. He knew that it was useless a long time ago. 

Midnight came and all the prisoners mostly fell asleep. Overhaul, however, couldn't sleep a wink. Because of the dark room he spent most of his days in, he lost his sense of time so he was pacing around, deep in thought. He couldn't dream of anything nice anyways. 

"Can't fall asleep either?" a feminine voice could be heard from the other side. Wait. They allowed women here? What could she have possibly done to deserve such punishment? 

He leaned his back on the doors and slid down to the floor, trying to find the right words.

"Yes." he sighed, enthusiasm lacking in his voice "But it's not like I need you to talk about my problems." 

"Hm, whatever. Go beat your head against the bars. Fall unconscious, loser."

The man snorted, which might as well be his first time he ever did that. 

"Well, this certainly sounds effective. It's not like I have anything to lose anyways." 

"Hey." the tone of her voice was earnest, and it aroused further questions in his jumbled up head. 

"What?"

"We're going to get out of here." 

Is she being serious now? "Really? Because as far as I know, we're locked out here for good. We don't even know the severity of our sentences. They can do whatever they want with us."

"Not quite. You know that they're being supervised by 'The Hearts and Mind' party offshoots. They can’t do a thing to us as long as they have their heads to the pikes." 

This might be true, but he didn't believe in anything the government's been telling them lately. It's only a matter of time before they switch their plans and play by their own rules, because stabbing people in the back was the only thing they've ever been good at. 

"How did you end up here?" 

Oh the long-awaited question. She wondered when he'd ask. 

"It's not like I need you to talk about my problems."

He smiled, he liked this vicious side of hers. But he also realized that she could be nice as well because if that wasn't the case, she wouldn't spread promises of the escape. At least that's what he thought. 

"Sorry about that." 

"It's okay. We've all been here for a very long time, now weren't we? We lose our cool and act like total assholes."

"Direct and straight to the point I see." his deadpan voice could be heard from the other side of the bars. 

"'Been raised this way, for the better or worse." it didn't sound like she was bragging, yet it felt like she was just talking about herself, honest and confident, to cover up what she felt was wrong. The incoming topic which she'd rather avoid. 

The villainess didn't want to open up about her past, so she just answered his question. 

"I killed people beyond counting, following AFO's orders. He always wished to become the world's greatest demon lord and thus promised us enormous change in the hero society. So in order to achieve that, he needed his underlings. And that's how I ended up here."

"You were loyal till the end."

"You know what they say; there can be no progress nor achievement without certain sacrifice."

Wise beyond her years and just as sad. He wondered how her face looked like, how the world's been treating her. 

"I had my own sacrifices as well."

"Do you regret them?"

...

"I do." 

Now it was her turn to snort "Really? And I thought that people situated this low couldn't have regrets. You remember what they said about us. 'Beasts in human clothing', 'Simply dreadful beings'." 

He felt insulted, maybe the things she said were true but it's not like he was anything similar to these pigs he shared the same air with, unfortunately.

"I regret hurting the person important to me. The old man who once took me in when I was very young. He was the infamous boss of Shie Hassaikai." 

Something clicked in her, it's such a small world they're living in, "Yakuza? I know you guys. We used to trade with you back in the days."

"Todou Gang?" 

"You said it."

"But... you were a force to be reckoned with. One day you just collapsed and not a single trace could be found. According to certain sources, there was no way anyone could determine the exact cause of your downfall. So what happened?" 

"I killed them all." 

... 

"AFO told me to kill them to prove my loyalty to him and, of course, to make sure that there was no one I could turn to other than himself." 

For some questionable reasons, and he didn't dare to admit that it was empathy he felt towards a random stranger and a former gang member he shared some history with, Overhaul wanted to fill the silence that lingered between them. Perhaps, because he felt guilty for making her reveal more than what she initially intended. 

"I used pops' niece, a 6-year-old girl who had an extraordinary Quirk; it allowed her to rewind a person's body back to a certain state. That means she could put a body back to before it was injured or before the person even developed a Quirk. With that, I wanted to create a Quirk-erasing drug to get rid of the Quirk society altogether and to make sure that yakuza could rise once again. I cut her skin every day to take blood samples and to test her regenerative abilities. However, pops didn't approve of it, so I handicapped him to the bed and planned on waking him up the moment I realized my plan, to make him proud of the achievement. Unfortunately, it didn't play out as I wanted and I never reached him."

The silence followed and the woman wore a disheartening smile on her face. It's not the answer she expected, she didn't ask for another sad story from another messed up person she's met in her life. But the intentions were pure and for her, it was good enough. 

"We both fought for something only to lose it all, huh?" she laughed, but it was prominent in her tone that it was bittersweet. 

"At least you're brought here in one piece." 

"At least you can still revive your parent."

Were they comforting each other? Were they jealous of each other? Were they wallowing in self-pity? They couldn't tell. The only thing they certainly could was the embarrassment they felt from the moment they realized that some of the prisoners were eavesdropping and making fun of their vulnerabilities. See? That's what they hated the most about opening up about themselves; they were worried about their feelings being perceived as a joke. The only way to protect themselves was to rise up the walls and never let anyone get closer, except they didn't regret exchanging a word or two, as long as it was the two of them. 

The next day, 8:34PM Mainland-side entrance, the guardians of 'The Bronze Gate' announced a code red security lockdown. Panic and shouting could be heard from across the hall and the security alarm announced the potential danger. 

"Close any and all passageways on each floor. All workers are to enforce strict measures to maintain order."

"The surveillance system is down! It seems like we've been hit by some sort of EMP attack!"

Static waves were spreading around the metal frames and the prison doors of the isolation block unlocked. Overhaul could hear the commotion outside and the villains leaving their cells in a hurry, but as much as he tried, he couldn't push the heavy doors open.

"3 seconds until we're back online- wait... What the... With the system down we can't monitor the inside!"

"Nice, 3 seconds be damned." he beat the door with his legs, pushed the surface with his shoulders, leaned all of his weight on the godforsaken thing just so it could finally open. Nothing. It seems like he lost a couple of pounds during his stay here. He couldn't believe his eyes, this couldn't be happening to him. After all this time of patient waiting and hoping to meet pops once again, it turns out he'd be the only one still trapped and all because he didn't have any hands. He panicked, he really couldn't decide on what to do next. But then he remembered-

"Go beat your head against the bars, loser."

That's it! This might be his only chance to escape! He didn't have much time left though, he could hear the shooting nearby so he definitely needed to hurry.

"The system won't come back on!! The ones in solitary confinement are breaking out!! Inside!"

"Control unit's on site!! Execute lockdown in the isolation block!"

"Follow procedure! If even one of them steps a foot outside their cell-"

"Fire!! Open fire!!"

Muscular threw whatever he could find in this messed up place back at them, excitement prominent in his big smile "You ain't gonna kill me with those puny toys! So how about you show me the exit already?!" 

Other villains were joining him, still overwhelmed by the sudden freedom they've been given "Dammit... After all that time..."

"Meat..." Moonfish mumbled as he cut his opponents with his blade-like teeth. 

The villain lady joined them in the run, still carefully examining her surroundings in case they were tricked into something, "The system isn't responding to my Quirk. 'Guess Tartarus really is falling." 

As she was running down the corridor, she could hear beating noises coming from one of the doors. It sounded dull so the person must have been using their head. 

"Eh, don't tell me the idiot actually listened to my advice. He must be desperate." 

She came to the doors and turned the circular lock in a hurry. She really didn't want to stay in this place any longer, but she couldn't leave him behind either. It's not like she could use him for anything since he was basically handless and Quirkless so why was she doing it? She didn't have an answer. Maybe it was their talk from the other day, maybe because they were both gang members with a history, maybe because of her regrets and her wish to do something right for once. Or maybe because she was just this kind. Nah, this couldn't be it, she never did anything in her life that didn't require a certain purpose. She cast her heart aside a long time ago and did what was necessary for the accomplishment of the mission. It would be weird if she suddenly started using her heart again, now wouldn't it? She was AFO's personal assassin, there was simply no way. 

He came out of the room with eyes wide in puzzlement. He was finally free and ready to find pops so he could possibly revive him and try to fix things as much as he could.

They looked at each other for the first time. They never said it aloud, godforbid, but they liked the other's eyes. And perhaps the eyes were a window to a person's soul, their broken souls, tormented by the life's temptations. They were still so young, probably in their twenties, and yet they looked older at the same time. Maybe because of the seriousness in their faces, their stronger stance, the way they defied their fate. They were destined to fall apart, no one would argue with it, but circumstances drove them to take action and rise from the bottomless chasm. And now they had each other. 

"We need to get out of here," she stated and pulled him by the sleeve that hung loosely from his shoulder. They escaped Tartarus and raided a small shop near the coast to change clothes and to mingle into the public unnoticed. She quickly picked out a dress and threw herself at work while Overhaul was still standing by the shop display, looking out for the potential intruders.

He couldn't erase the thought of this being some sort of a really weird first date; the girl coming out of the stall and the guy examining her looks. He shook his head, he never had this kind of thoughts in his entire life. He needed to pull himself together. 

The bob-hair came out and adjusted the ammo on her utility belt. He looked at her from the corner and she was stunning; intimidating with a tad bit of femininity in design. He stood there and watched how good it fit her curvy form. The thoughts wandering in his head sounded so wrong, terribly wrong. He needed to bring himself to stop. 

"Oh right, I almost forgot." she took a shirt off the shelf and came to him, showing him the garment in her hands "You need a little help, right?" 

"Sure.'' his voice was small and he stood still while she undid his buttons. Maybe from the outside he looked completely calm, but from the inside he was a complete mess. He looked at her face and wondered if she knew, the kind of effect she's having on him. She raised her head and he looked to the side, there's no way he could look her in the eyes at this point. He hoped she didn't notice. 

"You like this one, don't you?" she asked, filling the awkward silence. 

"Looks don't matter, the most important thing is to change and avoid getting caught." She looked annoyed. Great. He wanted to shove his head though the wall. Wait… Why was he thinking that? 

"I choose the clothes I like. It makes me feel better in my skin."

"You look good in it."

She looked at him surprised and he quickly corrected himself "the dress looks good."

"Sure." she trailed off and put the new shirt over his shoulders. She could feel his muscles tensing. This was probably because of the cool air, she assured herself. 

"Why did you break me out of Tartarus? It's not like I could be of any use to you." 

She buttoned up his shirt and fixed the wrinkled parts on the garment, hand accidentally brushing over the left side of his chest, feeling his heartbeat.

Well... that was a surprise.

"I thought that maybe you could be of some use to the demon lord. Not Quirk-wise, but you may offer a valuable set of information. Something that the demon lord would appreciate greatly." she could feel it slowing down and her heart dropped just as much.

"But also because I... liked you."

He looked at her incredulously and she smiled. She pinched him to bring him out of the trance and he complained. "Don't be awkward, say something."

"I like you too... I, this is my first time I ever said this to anyone. It's weird."

She slapped him gently on the shoulder and he reached to take it but, yea, no hands.

"What the hell?"

"You're the one who's weird. But I guess that I like you this way." she stood on her toes and kissed his cheek "Ew, you should definitely shave though. No doubt about it."

The former yakuza boss swore; he'll never understand women. But for some reason he couldn't deny that he was particularly drawn to this one. He wondered if pops would approve of her.

some todoroki headcanons i think about on a daily basis, time to bless your souls :>

i’ve mentioned this in my previous fic (you can read it here if you want to hehe) but i FEEL like he would be using fuji green tea shampoo. just the calming scent of it, or how good it smells whenever he opens the bottle moments before he pours it onto his palm; or maybe just after a tiring day, training for him could get really intense sometimes 0.0

no doubt; he probably would ask his s/o to give him a head massage just before his shower. you know how salons usually shampoo your hair when it’s still dry, and somehow your hair looks so amazing? yeah, he would ask you to do that. or if it were to be just a normal massage, he’s all in for that too :3

sometimes i also think about how he secretly owns a collection of turtlenecks all folded and kept away safely in his wardrobe. he does wear them rarely, not too rare, but he also takes care of them so well. of course, i can see that his favorite turtleneck is the black one, but sometimes he would think, ‘huh. time for white.’ and wears it.

would secretly search for cat pictures on pinterest

okay maybe at first he didn’t know/had very little knowledge of it. but maybe he saw you using it one day and he was genuinely interested. “what’s that?”

“it’s pinterest!”

and bam, you’ve unleashed a new light in him. from then on he’s just on pinterest looking for more cat pictures

his most favorite app? hm, after pinterest i would say snapchat?? like yES there’s like twitter, or instagram, or any other app that i could think of, i know. but something tells me that just for the filters, and to keep up with streaks with his friends (AND you), he uses it a lot. 

aaa i can see how this snapchat discovery happens tooo 🤣 maybe you and him were snuggling together, having a quiet night in when you suddenly show him the filter on your front camera. and the exact moment he notices the puppy filter on his face, poor baby is just SO confused you can’t help but laugh. and he would even go all out by touching his nose and his hair, just to see if the filter is actually there in real life aaaa🤣🤣

“no, sho! it’s a filter!”

“wait, there’s more than one?”

baby is hooked with it.

please braid his hair. he would be head over heels in love with just how the design looks. i have seen it everywhere that he is really touch-starved so yeah, do it!! even if you don’t know how to do braids, he would sit down in front of you, holding your hands, and then places them on his head.

“do anything you want with it.” and i can GUARANTEE you, he sounds like a lil puppy when he says it🥺

i don’t know if it’s canon (or if horikoshi-sensei has mentioned that he hates dogs, though i’ve definitely not read it anywhere yet), but he would TRY and get closer to dogs, if you were to be a dog lover. maybe little pats, or if he eventually gets closer, he might as well even give the dog loads of cuddles.

he loves getting to know more of your likes and dislikes, so that he could try and build a stronger bond with you. of course you would reassure him that he doesn’t have to like it if he really can’t, and he even agrees. but regardless, he’s definitely going to accept them🥰

his favorite cold beverage? hmm i feel like it’s iced green tea?? or any types of tea?? if he were to have coffee though, it would be once a week? twice a week? depends on his mood. but tea? oof, i stand with that hc.

Are the Villains “right”?

Okay, so I was scrolling through the bnha spoilers tag whilst procrastinating work and I’m really not living for the vibes there. My biggest issues fall into two main camps: “this arc is going to be the end of the League”, and “Villain stans are hypocrites with no reading comprehension for condemning the Heroes’ behaviour”, and I believe both of these statements can be addressed simultaneously, whilst also giving me a convenient excuse to not write. So without further ado,

Part 1: Themes

Right from the very beginning of the series, literally the first line, one thing is made blatantly clear: This series is not going to be about good guys and bad guys. “All men are not created equal” is not a line that implicates an inherent divide between good and evil, unless you’re an actual eugenicist. And pretty much every important character is designed to criticise a different aspect of the established system.

Izuku: The Quirkless are worthless. Not explicitly, but... everyone knows it. 

Bakugou: If you have a good Quirk, you are praised and treated as special, and as a consequence you’re never expected to learn and grow as a person. 

Shoto: Dedicating your entire life to becoming strong to the detriment of your own health is the best way to climb to the top. 

All Might: You don’t have to worry about anything. A Hero will save you. 

Shinsou: If you have a Villain’s Quirk, you’re going to be a Villain, no matter the quality of your personality. 

Kirishima: If you’re not flashy, there’s no point even trying.

Hawks: Similar to Shoto, if you show natural promise then it’s acceptable to groom you as a weapon. 

I’m sure there are others that I’ve missed. Each of these characters’ individual developments have been focused around them overcoming these ingrained ideas and growing and succeeding despite them - with the exception, perhaps, of Hawks. So if several of the major Hero characters are designed to illustrate and criticise the established system, what about the villains? I guess if the Heroes are stories about people succeeding despite what the world tells them, then the Villains are stories about what happens when they don’t. 

Spinner: Mutants are second-class citizens and should be treated as such. 

Toga: If your Quirk is considered to be bad or gross, then you should be punished for wanting to use it. 

Twice: The world won’t make space for your special needs. 

Magne: If you don’t fit the mould of what people want you to be, you won’t be respected.

And Shigaraki: It’s not our responsibility to help you. If you weren’t saved, that must mean you’re not worth saving. 

The one thing that both the Heroes and the Villains have in common is that they are tools to show the audience the flaws in BNHA’s society. It’s canon that Quirks appeared suddenly, and though by the time BNHA is set in, society has tried to adapt to fit it and is making some progress towards being functional, it’s clear that it has a long, long way to go, because it’s failing so many people. (Draw some parallels to real life, hm?). BNHA’s overarching themes of individual worth not being more important than collective good and how rules and structure created in good will can result in a lot of pain and abuse are, first and foremost, exemplified in the characters themselves. I like to tell people who find Shigaraki’s motivations vague and uncompelling that Shigaraki doesn’t need to have a point, he is the point, and this is exactly the reason why. 

I also believe that this is primarily why for Horikoshi to end the League here would be, frankly, terrible writing. We have engaged with the LOV more than pretty much any other Shonen villain group I can think of, almost any villain group at all. We’ve seen them develop as much as we’ve seen the heroes develop, especially in Shigaraki’s case, and to have Shigaraki only be their ‘first-year villain’ or whatever would be disrespectful, wasteful, and thematically inappropriate. To have a more classic, pre-developed villain whose villainy seems to stem from some inherent evil characteristic like AfO or Overhaul would ultimately defeat the story of how the worst villains are created by flaws in the system, not born. 

Part 2: Fan Response

Sometimes I can’t believe I still have to reiterate this to people, but it is possible to stan a character whilst simultaneously recognising that they are flawed, often critically so. When did we move from adoring villains to saying if you like this character you must be an inherently bad person because of this list of bad things they did? 

The thing is that the vast majority of ‘opinions’ on fan blogs are... poorly thought out and shallow, to put it lightly. When it’s 2am and I’m answering an ask about my opinions on x plot point, it’s not gonna be well thought out and thoroughly researched. I’m probably a bit tipsy, kind of tired, and just typing out whatever my initial response is. And really, if I reblog a bit of art with the caption ‘Shigaraki did nothing wrong’, do you really think I’m being serious? A lot of what we say is hyperbolic and meant to either be funny or to evoke an emotion, not because we actually believe it. 

That being said, the League in particular, I believe, resonates with a lot of people in the current political climate. A group of outcasts with characteristics considered undesirable by the wider population coming together and genuinely caring about one another whilst they aim to completely eradicate the system that hurt them? As an angry, marginalised leftist in a society that seems increasingly determined to wipe my chances at a good life out without blinking an eye, hell yeah that resonates with me. Being able to crumble the cripplingly complex and morally vile system I live in to dust and starting over is one hell of an appealing power fantasy. Does that mean I think murder is okay? Obviously not. It’s a fantasy. If there’s one place where I can live out those fantasies without consequences, it’s here. In fiction. And so it seems really stupid to me to be confronted with the idea that if I like a fictional violent radical I’m accused of condoning murder and kidnapping. 

Part 3: Are the Heroes right?

So a lot of the posts I saw that aggravated me were framed like 'how can the villain stans think Miruko and Gran Torino's behaviour is worse than Shigaraki's?', but like... who was saying that?

I feel like certain people's views of the heroes versus villains debate falls under the same fallacies as a lot of political arguments- that is to say, if I'm criticising one side, I must be defending the other. Which is... just blatantly untrue. When we say that the heroes' consistent dehumanisation of a man who is, first and foremost, a victim of significant grooming and abuse throughout his life, is gross and cruel, and that this attitude is mirrored in an awful lot of the hero-villain interactions implying a certain level of empathetic alienation and lack of accountability, we're not saying they shouldn't be trying to take Shigaraki down. Of course they should, he's going to decimate hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. But, like, does that mean they're exempt from all criticism? Should we be excusing the cruel and dismissive attitudes of the heroes and ignoring the behaviours of their side that lead to further 'villainisation' of marginalised people just because they're responsible for saving lives? No. Because once again, one of the key themes of BNHA is that neither side is perfect, and neither side is right.

Mass murder is wrong. So is systemic cruelty towards the oppressed. You don't have to approve of one to criticise the other. So next time you see one of those posts and jump to the conclusion that villain stans have no reading comprehension, pls remember these points.

Anyway, that's my little rant. Sorry.

Tl;dr, villain stans aren't stupid or glorifying murder, we're just capable of criticising more than one type of bad behaviour.

Bakugo Katsuki

I felt like doing a character meme!

Favorite thing about him:

His odd code of ethics. I really hated him up until I realized, “huh, here’s a guy who passionately resents being saved…and who also refuses to save others.” I think it was his way of showing respect.

Related, another of my favorite things about him is also how well he can take criticism…sometimes. I have a lot of respect for the way he accepted Yaoyorozu’s criticism after the first Deku v Kacchan battle instead of becoming defensive and lashing out.

Least favorite thing about him:

…probably Bakugo’s relationship with All Might. Pick pretty much any other important adult and you get something more interesting than the kinda stale dynamic between these two.

BROTP:

I think Kirishima and Uraraka are pretty standard fare lol, and just the bakusquad dynamics in general are great (especially when Kaminari and Mina repeatedly dunked the santa hat on his head).

I would love to see Bakugo and Tamaki Amajiki interact. I feel like Bakugo would be like, very discomforted by Amajiki’s lack of confidence in a “I don’t want to see that, don’t make those pathetic faces where I have to see them” type way and destroy Amajiki’s self-esteem in like 0.5 seconds. And also, Amajiki would smack down Bakugo just as fast in a fight, and Bakugo would be furious that someone so strong could be so weak mentally. But hey, given time and Kirishima to play mediator, I’d be really curious to see these two reach a detente where they like…idk, cook together with Mirio, Kirishima, and Eri, and Bakugo grouses about the weird things Amajiki eats for his quirk but Amajiki knows better than to believe him.

I got a kick out of Bakugo’s dynamic with Endeavor’s sidekick Burnin’ during the internship arc. I loved how she felt the need to hype the wonder trio up by provoking and challenging them, and ofc Bakugo ate it up 100% and returned it at 150% (tbh their dynamic reminded me a bit of Mitsuki), but ultimately she acknowledged it wasn’t really necessary and she really respected him for that…but she kept doing it anyways, presumably because it was fun. I’d love to see Burnin’ show Bakugo a little bit of that affection and for Bakugo to be like. Totally appalled. He would not be prepared to know somebody likes him.

Okay but also, I’ve been really happy to see Horikoshi establish that Bakugo does, in fact, respect Best Jeanist. Even back when I hated Bakugo, I was struck by just how…gentle the scenes of Jeanist combing Bakugo’s hair were, and c’mon Bakugo does not let just anybody (…or anybody at all) treat him gently. IJeanist told Bakugo what he needed to hear so that even if Bakugo wasn’t ready to understand it now, he’s a smart kid with a hero’s heart, he would hang onto it and eventually figure it out. I really want Jeanist to see how Bakugo’s grown and also how he’s learned from what Jeanist told him!

I also like to think Bakugo would have like…a hilariously one-sided rivalry with Hawks, where like Bakugo is like, Hawks set the record for opening an agency and getting into the top ten the fastest?!!! SO WHAT, I’m gonna do it faster and I’m gonna be number one!!! Got it spoonbill!! So Bakugo tries to act super intimidating and shit whenever Hawks is around to disguise his sense of inferiority, but Hawks sees straight through it and is just, a troll.

One more. Bakugo interning with Mirko would be lit.

One more for real. Bakugo and Monoma having a hate-brotp is amazing. Bakugo will reach age seventy and he’ll still be shitting on Monoma.

ONE LAST ONE. Bakugo + Hatsume = max destruction and I’m so here for it. I want these two so badly.

OTP Rarepairs: (I ship basically everything)

Kacchako is probably my favorite, but I also love todobaku, kiribaku, and bakudeku. …and any threesome combinations that involve kacchako.

Camie/Bakugo seems like a lot of fun. I like how she made him laugh with her Todoroki illusion, I like how sweet and clueless and flirty she seems, I think Bakugo would be mortified to realize he was crushing on her and immaturely be extra rude to her, but Camie is accustomed to illusions and intuitively sees through it.

I can’t decide on a particular pair, but Bakugo has such a relentless, single-minded focus on being a “hero” that developing feelings for a “villain” would challenge in him an interesting way. I’m not getting a strong vibe for Bakugo and any of the LoV characters, though after Shigaraki bungled the recruitment attempt, it would be hilarious to see a follow-up attempt to woo. Now I’m curious…gonna see what ao3 has.

Hm. The only thing that really comes to mind is that the incident where Kacchan fell of the bridge and Deku tried to help him up is only important in hindsight. Given space, Kacchan would have nursed his pride and the incident would have blown over; but because Deku didn’t understand, he insisted on dogging along after Kacchan and trying his very best to stay friends, and Kacchan just as insistently pushed Deku away, growing angrier in the process but too immature to verbalize why Deku’s tenacious bond to him threatened him so much.

Oh! And credit to my friend for this one, but one of the reasons why Bakugo didn’t participate in the dorm king contest was that his room is covered in All Might posters. Can you imagine how much it would have pissed him off if everybody saw how similar his room is to Deku’s?

Unpopular opinion:

How unpopular is it to think that his development isn’t that great…? His relationship with All Might doesn’t move me, so I can’t really appreciate his pivotal moments.

I was okay with his hero name being “Kacchan,” but now that he’s apparently decided on one in 252, I really don’t want it to be Kacchan because I don’t feel like he’s had enough development so far to get him to make that decision.

I want his hero name to reflect something about the theme of hands, since they’re the site of his quirk and also a powerful symbol for reaching out to people, connecting, holding on, letting go, and agency in general.

MY HERO ACADEMIA SEASON 4 EPISODE 2!

Ok, I’m super hyped for this season now. Crazyyyy shit went down and I have thoughts about it that some people might not like... or maybe they might understand why I feel that way? But anyways, let’s get into it...

- I’m liking the theme song more and more after every listen. It might eventually make my top three. Sorry, ‘The Day’.

Swag. Overhaul. What a first entrance. It’s probably my favourite introduction to a villain so far besides that first full reveal of All for One. He’s just straight up pimpin’. There’s no other description. Especially with that coat.

‘I DID NOT COME TO PLAY WITH YOU, HOES’

Also, the character music they gave him was dope! Up there with All for One’s theme. The shading and colour tint - and even the line art sometimes - in his scenes were all just beautiful.

...Right. This is the moment I mostly wanted to talk about. I really loved getting this little snippet of a backstory from Magne. It honestly just made me want to find out more about her ideals and why she decided to join the League of Villains. We’re told that she basically found the League as somewhere she can comfortably belong... which I’m reading as she feels most comfortable being able to express herself as a transgender woman with the League rather than her being transgender in society. 

Which makes me raise questions as to how the transgender community is looked at in the MHA universe. We know so far of one other transgender character, Tiger, and he didn’t choose a life of villainy (instead going in the complete opposite direction) and for the most part seems accepted by others, just feared cos of how tough he is lol. I just wanna know what other motivation Magne had for becoming a villain besides her new found family.

Anyways...

...too bad we’re not gonna get that answer. 

Anime is interesting. If this was a Marvel film or any other type of western media, directors and writers would be getting dragged for killing one of two transgender characters, just seconds after we get a backstory for her. And while I don’t think we should be dragging Horikoshi’s name through the mud, I do think it’s something we should at least acknowledge. Anime has never been politically correct and over the years and I find myself excusing a lot of stuff that goes on cos I don’t feel educated or experienced or even belonging enough to Japanese culture to really critique it. Plus, I’ve gotten lax about it cos overtime I’ve just shrugged it off as ‘anime be anime’.

It just felt unfortunate that we finally get this interesting backstory for this character and suddenly they’re offed. I get someone had to die to show Overhaul meant business but... it just felt... weird. Maybe that was the whole point? ...hm.

The amount of blood. Brutal. 

- I will say I’m not totally sold on Overhaul’s English VA. I think his germ freakout moment needed to be a bit more vocally dramatic to contrast his almost monotone and low and weirdly calm voice. Especially in the one scene where Overhaul is literally breaking out in hives.

I would laugh at this if it weren’t so incredibly dark. God, I can’t wait to see more of Overhaul this season! He definitely seems like a contender and he doesn’t need over 100 quirks to prove it!

I appreciate this weird, murderous, found family! It’d be sweet if they weren’t all so twisted.

Why isn’t Bakugo allowed to do a work study? Is it cos he was kidnapped or is it cos he still needs to get his provisional licence? I’m guessing the latter. (I just wanted to acknowledge best boy cos I know he’s barely getting any screen time this half of the season).

I love this small moment. I love how human he seems now that he’s locked in Small Might form. Oh, All Might... (when he dies, it’s gonna be a sad few months for me)

I LOVE ME SOME DOMESTIC CLASS 1A! Having them move into dorms was the best autocorrect decision, I dunno why Horikoshi didn’t just make UA a boarding school in the first place. Especially as I find the reasoning for making them move into dorms a bit nonsensical but anyways.

Overall, this was a dope episode. The first half was definitely better than the second half but it still was awesome and I just can’t wait till we get into the nitty gritty of this Overhaul arc. Shit’s about to go down!

I translated the entire interview with Boku No Hero Academia’s Horikoshi Kouhei, published online via Natalie Comics. He discusses many different things, from what is a hero to which arc was the most difficult to draw, how much he was involved with the new movie, and much more! The interview is extremely long but gives great insight into the creative process that he goes through! Enjoy~

THE INTERNSHIP ARC WAS DIFFICULT

Interviewer: Boku No Hero Academia will be celebrating its 4th anniversary in July. Congratulations!

Horikoshi: Ahh, it’s been four years already, huh. Thank you very much.

Interviewer: Well then, let’s discuss some of the content for Boku No Hero Academia. At the moment, the most recent volume is Volume 18, and up until now Deku and the others have been interning with pro-heroes and also came into contact with villains along the way. This is the “Internship Arc,” and it is supposed to be the longest arc within the Boku No Hero Academia story so far, right?

Horikoshi: When I started the internship arc, I was thinking that I wanted to make this the longest arc so far. Up until now, even the longest arcs for BNHA spanned no more than two volumes. However, series such as ONE PIECE have arcs that keep going and going, right?

Interviewer: The longest arc for ONE PIECE probably was more than 10 volumes.

Horikoshi: I wanted to challenge myself in creating a long arc like that. Also, I needed to introduce characters that will be present in the last arc of the Boku No Hero Academia story, so I wanted to plan this all out. To tell the truth though, when I was writing the internship arc, it was really hard to push through. In the middle of the arc I thought to myself, “I can’t do this.”

Interviewer: Is it because the arc was long that gave you hardships?

Horikoshi: It’s not because the arc was long, but more about the story that made it difficult. The story was much too dark, and during the middle of it, I just wasn’t feeling it.

Interview: The internship arc indeed also had a character who actually died, and this was a very heavy episode that had not happened thus far.

Horikoshi: When I read other manga or watch movies, I really like stories that have dark plots. I also like stories that don’t have happy endings and can totally stomach gore and horror. However, when I’m writing it myself, it gets really difficult. I’m someone whose feelings fluctuate depending on the contents that I am working on.

THIS WAS AN ARC THAT YOU WANTED READERS TO THINK WAS THE LAST ARC

Interviewer: When you were writing this dark episode, how did you keep up your own tensions during this?

Horikoshi: In the story, if I’m writing about a feel good development, then that’s where I recover my own feelings. For example, in the “Internship Arc,” the character Fat Gum really saved me.

Interview: With the name “Fat,” he was as his name suggests, and also spoke in a Kansai accent, and he was quite a comic relief character, right?

Horikoshi: In the scene with Fat Gum and Kirishima fighting against the villain, I felt really passionate, and I was able to transfer that onto my brush. From that point, I was finally able to write out the Internship Arc little by little. Fat Gum is My Hero.

Interview: On the topic of darker plot points, right now in the anime, the fight between All Might and All For One is also an episode that weighs heavily. Horikoshi-sensei, you started that episode in Volume 8 and made a comment that “This time, I want to write a bit more of a painful story.”

Horikoshi: As expected, writing out that arc was rough. Within the battle between All Might and All For One, when the rescue of (Bakugou) Katsuki, who was previously kidnapped by the villains, was finally put into motion, I myself was able to see the light, and I felt way better. That’s what I mean when I say that within the story, my own feelings become transferred on the paper, thinking “I finally drew it” at myself.

Interviewer: What kind of tensions were you feeling at that time?

Horikoshi: My goal was to let readers think that Boku No Hero Academia would end during this fight. However, the readers probably knew that this wasn’t the end, and at that point during the poll, there were really good reviews, giving me the feeling that this manga isn’t just going to be tossed aside as a one shot thing.

Interviewer: What was your reasoning of wanting readers to think that this was the completion of the series?

Horikoshi: Since All Might loses his power in this fight, I couldn’t just draw with a normal feeling of tension. It’s not really “PLUS ULTRA,” but it was an episode that I needed to break the limit in order to leave an impression on the reader. I wanted to create a story where readers could look back at Boku No Hero Academia and say that the best episode of the entire series was the fight between All Might and All For One.

WHAT IS A HERO?

Interviewer: This subject is present in the current arc, but for Horikoshi-sensei, what is a Hero in Boku No Hero Academia?

Horikoshi: “What exactly is a hero?” This is what I think about and what makes me want to draw. What is a hero? It’s hard to put it in words.

Interviewer: How would you define the image of a hero?

Horikoshi: Moreso than that, I personally do not want to define that. When Boku No Hero Academia first started, in a past interview, I remember answering “A hero would probably have this type of existence.” Recently though, I have been thinking about how there’s way more viewpoints that correlate with what is a hero. For example, some people might think a hero is someone who “even if they’re a lone wolf, they would still do their best, and that’s what you can call a hero.” There are also others who might think that heroes would be like a pro baseball player, someone who hopes to let everyone enjoy their work. There’s no single word that can pinpoint “Ah, this is a hero” in my opinion.

Interviewer: Has there been any triggers that made your own thought process change within the story?

Horikoshi: As the serialization continued, and after seeing various reviews from readers, I decided to start moving various characters’ stories forward. For example, for Deku, a hero is someone who can save people, and for Katsuki, a hero is someone who can win. When I realized that I had to write about their entire stories, I started to think that I had to figure out collectively what a hero figure would be for various people, and I guess if you call that a trigger, then I guess it is one.

A CHARACTER WHO WAS EXPANDED UPON AFTER INITIAL SERIALIZATION

Interviewer: The series has been in serialization for four years now, and has there been any characters that have been expanded upon than what you originally had planned?

Horikoshi: Hm…I guess that All Might, Katsuki, Todoroki, Endeavor, Ochako are all characters that this can be applied to, but since they are all main characters who have been progressing since their introduction, I wouldn’t say it’s an expansion of their character per se. However, if we are speaking about characters that had more plot expanded, then it would be Tsuyu and Toga. I think since they were first introduced, we took into consideration the voices of the readers, and afterwards changed their storylines. That’s why I would probably say Tsuyu and Toga.

Interviewer: Aoyama was featured in Volume 19 at the beginning of the volume. During the Boku No Hero Academia anime event, and according to the coverage, a lot of cast members said that they like Aoyama, but of course, if he’s popular enough, will he have his own feature?

Horikoshi: No, that’s not exactly true (laughs). Just because he’s popular hm…maybe he’s just popular among industry members.

Interviewer: Oh no (laughs)! Besides Aoyama-kun, if you were to feature another character from Class A, who would it be?

Horikoshi: If it’s the girls, then I would choose Ashido. She’s rather cute, and a good character, so I would like to write about her. If it’s the boys, then I would choose Sero, the guy who has Spiderman-like abilities that could have great action sequences. However, I think that including Hagakure, Shouji, etc., I would like to write more about all members of the class. We actually have a story featuring Shouji planned already, so we will probably include it somewhere.

I WANT TO REACH NUMBER ONE IN THE POLLS

Interviewer: In Kadokawa’s Da Vinci magazine, you had an interview with Naruto’s Kishimoto-sensei, and during the discussion, you mentioned that you were worried about keeping up with the demands of the readers.

Horikoshi: Yes, I did.

Interviewer: At that time, Boku No Hero Academia was only at its 3rd volume, but afterwards the anime, games, light novels, and now a movie have been released, so the series has expanded to various media. How do you maintain the demand of the readers in this case?

Horikoshi: The most important one is of course the polls. I always aim for the top and not lose any traction. Boku No Hero Academia fluctuates a lot in the polls, so there have been times where it dipped. That’s why I want to create an amazing story that can reach the Number 1 ranks, and I create the content with the hope that it will reach Number 1. At first I thought that since the anime has started, I really needed to put my all into this, but if I keep thinking that, then I would probably break from the pressure, so that’s why right now I just want to focus on the contents of the manga.

Interviewer: You mentioned before that Yahagi Kousuke, the person who initially helped the serialization of Kishimoto’s Naruto, was a great presence for you.

Horikoshi: That’s right. He’s always on my conscience.

Interviewer: Do you think about the editor who first helped you in the serialization?

Horikoshi: Sometimes. Even though we have a different editor now for Boku No Hero Academia, I sometimes think about what the first editor, Koike-san, would say, such as maybe he would get upset at that, and so forth. However, I heard that Koike-san tell my current editor that he praised the new character Hawks, and that made me really happy from the bottom of my heart. In lieu of this, my first editor does have a presence within me.

THE MOVIE HAS A COMBO MOVE WITH DEKU AND ALL MIGHT THAT WAS NOT IN THE MANGA

Interviewer: Well then, let’s talk a bit about the Boku No Hero Academia Movie “The Two Heroes,” which will release in theaters in August! When it was decided that there will be a movie, what were your feelings?

Horikoshi: I had a feeling of “wait…no way, you’re joking, right?” There was talk of making a movie previously, but I never believed it. However, when the story progressed more and more, even if we were to have a meeting with the staff, I’m sure that the plans would fall through. Because a movie requires a lot of manpower to make it happen, I truly thought that it was never going to happen, but now that I think of it, I was a bit rude in that aspect.

Interviewer: Horikoshi, you are listed as the creator and supervisor of the movie. Exactly what did you work on?

Horikoshi: I worked on many things such as the design for David and Melissa as well as what I want to have in the movie’s plot, what I want the characters to do, and we discussed this thoroughly with Director Nagasaki and the movie staff. I also read the scripts and offered my own opinions with the direction of how the story should go.

Interviewer: What kind of scenarios did the staff ask you?

Horikoshi: It wasn’t discussed in the first draft, but I wanted Deku to really try his all in the story. I also wanted people who did not know anything about Boku No Hero Academia to be able to enjoy the movie. Since it’s a movie, I wanted to let Deku and the others go to a different location! (laughs)

Interviewer: The stage is set in a floating island abroad, and we also see that a Young All Might used to study abroad in a city in America.

Horikoshi: When I create a character, I think of their chronology, and for All Might, his history is that he studied abroad in America, so that’s why I wanted to expand on that aspect.

Interviewer: In the trailer, there are scenes where they are fighting, and the animation is really well done!

Horikoshi: Yes, I actually haven’t seen the finished product yet myself, but from the brief scenes I saw, the characters move wonderfully. I hope everyone watches it in theaters! The duo combo attack scenes with All Might and Deku that didn’t make it into the manga are also a point of interest!

Interviewer: Since this happens before All Might loses his power in the manga, his power move with Deku is something you can’t write anymore in the manga.

Horikoshi: Yes, the events of the movie happen before the battle with All For One, so I want everyone to be able to watch and look forward to this since you will never see their duo power move in the manga.

FOUR CAREFULLY SELECTED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Interviewer: To promote the movie, there was a hash tag on Twitter where users could ask you a question, and these are the four questions that we hope you can answer for us.

Horikoshi: Ah, these were the four chosen ones, yes? I totally you meant that even though we had planned this, we only got four questions (laughs).

Interviewer: We got so many questions, it was way beyond even 100 (laughs). So let’s move on to the first question. “Is there club activities in U.A. Academy?” and “If there was, what kind of activities would the students of Class 1A partake in?”

Horikoshi: U.A. Academy has the General Studies and Economics departments, so there would be club activities. However those who are in the hero department would not enter those. They of course could enter if they wanted to, but I don’t think they would have time to go through that. However, perhaps the General Studies’ student Shinsou might be involved, and there might be a bit about the club activities in the main story in the future.

Interviewer: For example, what type of club activity do you think Deku or Katsuki would do?

Horikoshi: Deku would probably be in some kind of movie analysis club. Katsuki would be in…I don’t know, maybe Argument Club? (T/N: He specifically says ARGUMENT club, not Debate Club lol).

Interviewer: You don’t think he would be in a boxing club? (laughs)

Horikoshi: I think he would hate the rules and probably boxing isn’t his thing. Maybe he wouldn’t even be in a club to begin with.

Interviewer: Okay, on to the next question: “Within the series and the world, the BNHA characters feel real and have very human emotions. Did you have any of your own experiences that you wrote into the story?” Has there been any specific instances where your own personal experienced have influenced some of the story’s scenes or script?

Horikoshi: Oh wow, there’s way too many to count. For example in Volume 11, when Deku was younger he and his mom have a scene together [where Deku’s mom says, “Help me!” and Deku says “I am here!”] I actually used to do this exact same thing with my mom when I was younger, and we played at the park’s playgrounds. We called it the “King of the Jungle.” My mom would go inside the jungle gym at the playground and say, “Please save me, Leo,” which is the name that I used to call myself when we played this together.

I have that memory of pretending to be Leo and playing with my mom at the playground, so I wanted to incorporate that into the story. As a reader, it’s probably a scene that does not hold much meaning, but as for me, I cried while writing that scene.

Interviewer: So Horikoshi-sensei does incorporate your own experiences into the Boku No Hero Academia storyline.

Horikoshi: Yes, I suppose. Another experience that I put into the story was in Volume 16 where you learn about Tamaki transferring schools.

Interviewer: Tamaki transferred schools and was not used to his new class, but he soon became good friends with Mirio, who helped him feel included.

Horikoshi: Right before entering middle school but after elementary school, I ended up going to a middle school outside of my neighborhood. Since this school was outside of where I went to elementary school, I knew no one at all. Everyone else was already in their own groups and knew each other, but I was the loner, and it was a really sad time for me (laughs).

Interviewer: So then for you, a friend like Mirio was there to help.

Horikoshi: Yes, he told me, “you’re not a bad person at all” and was the one who helped me feel included. Man, when I say this now it sounds kind of stupid, huh? (laughs)

Interviewer: Not at all!!!

Horikoshi: Hopefully fans of Tamaki won’t dislike this bit of information, with an impression of like “Oh that’s actually Horikoshi’s memory” or something like that. However, that’s basically how I use my own experiences to add to my characters, and my feelings just overflow into the story.

Interviewer: Let’s move on to the third question: “If you had this quirk, you would definitely want to use it!” Which quirk would that be, and how would you want to use it?

Horikoshi: Definitely Todoroki. I hate hot places, and when things get hot I immediately want to cool down. When I draw Todoroki, I often think “It would be nice to have this quirk.”

Interviewer: That’s quite a practical answer (laughs). Here’s the last question: “Please let us know the reason why you decided to become a mangaka.”

Horikoshi: I loved drawing ever since I was little, and if you think of an industry that allows you to draw, there’s nothing else besides manga, so I decided to become a manga artist. To give a specific incident that occurred, when I was in Elementary chool, the manga “Megaman X2” came out, and I loved drawing the character called the Crystal Snail. My friends complimented me on my drawing and even said “Please give me this drawing!” and this made me really happy. At that time, I don’t know why, but I remember thinking “I want to be a manga artist in the future!”

HE IS DRAWING CONTENT THAT WILL HAVE MEANING IN THE LAST ARC

Interviewer: Well then, lastly, please tell us a bit more about the expansion of the “Boku No Hero Academia” universe. Previously in SUGOI JAPAN, you mentioned that you would like Boku No Hero Academia to be a short and concise story and not drawn out, but what percentage of the story is complete at this point?

Horikoshi: When the decision to extend the series happened, I personally thought “I guess I want to end it here” and it was around Volume 30.

Interviewer: So then are you 2/3 done with the story?

Horikoshi: That’s what I had originally planned, but when I think of all the things that must be set up before getting into the last arc, I realized, “Ending the series at Volume 30 will be impossible” (laughs). However, the current arc that is going on all has purpose that will be relevant in the last arc.

Interviewer: You mentioned in today’s interview that the “Internship Arc” had a very important character that you wanted to draw at the end. Does that mean that all the characters will come together at the last arc?

Horikoshi: All characters will come together and go forward into the last arc. However, at the moment we are not even close to the last battle, but I do have an idea of how I want it to be planned out.

Interviewer: Volume 19 covers the Cultural Festival, and there’s a lot of bright scenes, but please give us a message in regards to points of interest within the newest volume.

Horikoshi: The Cultural Festival puts a spotlight on Jirou from the girls in Class A, and I had the conscience of making sure that she has a lot of cute faces when drawing it. Of course, fans of Jirou would love this, but I hope that others will also enjoy Jirou in this arc!

My Hero Academia Chapter 191 Review

Oh my god. What a chapter.

So we open up on a really cool first panel that actually has a blurry vision to show how Endeavor’s sight has been altered. As for Dabi who just showed up last chapter like “Surprise Bitch,” is back and now jojo posing.

Endeavor brings up the sand hero snatch who Dabi killed on the highway. Well technically it was him and Compress, but it was still Dabi’s flames. Dabi also erects a wall of blue fire which blocks out other heroes.

Really nice attention to detail here with Aizawa and Todoroki being the most shook because they recognized Dabi from the camp.

Bit of a badass moment from Hawks here still willing to fight even with almost no feathers and we learn that Dabi is back for the Noumu... I’m pretty sure its dead at this point.

Dabi redies to take them all out but then everyone’s newest waifu, Mikuro, comes into save them. See says she on the news what happened but given how a ton shots last few chapters has been the news crews and people watching TV, I would’ve liked it more if say we saw Miruko and maybe Crust or Ryukyu also reacting to this.

Miruko shows up and damn is she got some muscle on her, HIGHFIVE HORIKOSHI! Dabi is pretty much fucked given how he has an emitter type quirk that if you get around, you can pretty much best is burnt noodle arm ass in hand to hand combat like Aizawa. And given Miruko... Yeah Dabi makes the call to some person called Ujiko and he teleports away in a mildly disturbing manner. Serious is there any more practical thing to do.

Of course Dabi still makes his threat to Endeavor and at this point there is no other way to see him as anything other than the third Todoroki sibling.

Okay random news guy. I get the idea for this being how the public views them, but a I the only one who feels a little disconnected given we barely see the news reporter and the fact a term like “I know my voice can not reach our heroes” would’ve sounded more powerful coming from All Might or Shoto?

After a really cool transition of Endeavor losing consciousness, we cut to a warehouse.

It turns out Hawks and Dabi were in cahoots, but things didn’t go as they planned.

Thank god the lighting is dark here, because holding a your sharp feather like a knife isn’t very intimidating if you actually remember, its a feather.

The two have a back and forth about who the real one who who screwed up wa with both having their own rationalization.

Hawks and Dabi eventually part, seemingly Hawks has yet to meet Shigaraki.

Hawks walks to the Hospital that Endeavor is staying at with his own flash back revealing he’s not a traitor.

So these two officials (Who with their faces, noses, and hair, I swore were Hawks’ parents) who want Hawks as a double agent given his unique ability to pickup what people are gossiping about or studying urban ruors like when he was talking about Noumu in the early chapters of this arc where he gets more streetwise information.

The two go on to say that they want to know if these villains are capable of making Noumu with just All for One alone which makes me wonder if Shigaraki has All for One given they keep recalling their Noumu or they might have another way of producing it. They also say that Hawks is the best candidate for this job given his lack of interest in fame and prestige that most heroes are after.

Gotta love with all that bandaging, We can still see Endeavor scowling.

We end on Dabi who remembers what Snatch had told hm about families and apparently that family seems to be the catalyst for Dabi detaching himself from this society.

Post Chapter Follow up: Good fucking chapter.

It manages to squeeze in some nice action bits without erupting into an actual fight, it manages to sew seeds of mystery with this Ujiko guy and whatever plans Dabi and the league has for the villains.

Hawks also being a heroic double agent works well given how we all think there’s a traitor in UA so good to see the good guys are working smarter.

While usually I would say, maybe hold off on the double agent reveal and actually make us believe that Hawks may be evil (cause trust me I got that vibe from hen he was introduced), but this mini arc did a lot to endear him so I can see why Horikoshi didn’t want to betray that.

I really can’t find anything really wrong with this chapter though maybe I’m not the biggest fan how this arc made everyone including our main cast an onlooker.

1: What part of the anime/manga piqued your interest?Well, honestly? At first it was Deku. He was a really cute looking kid, and is kind of odd looking and frail for a shounen protagonist. “damnit, damnit, damnit! where the hell was i when that happened?!”

appears a lot pissier than usual, in reality— he’s just really worried, and he can’t slow down his heart palpitations!

“calm down bakugou!”

“calm.. CALM DOWN? RIDDLE ME THIS, ASSHOLE—”

hm okay, so lets say that you were in the passengers seat when the crash happened

katsuki will probably want to find whoever was the driver, and just absolutely go ballistic on them, but probably ends up not doing that when he thinks about what you’d feel

and lets say another driver crashed into your car— katsuki will search high and low just to find that said driver, and he’ll show them hell

and if you crashed into a poll or something, he wouldn’t get too mad— but he’ll still scold you, and lecture you about driving safety

when he finds out you need surgery, he’ll be so upset

“what do you mean SURGERY? who the hell crashed into you, and why do they have a license?! they’re a danger to society!” he sounds angry but he’s quietly yet impatiently waiting outside for the surgery to be successfully completed

cleans and takes care of your remaining injuries, doesn’t matter if there’s a tiny little scrape on your forehead, or if you’re left with a bunch of broken bones.

he’ll be nursing you, like it or not.

he doesn’t let you leave your bed during your recovery, he insists— and you have an idea of what’ll happen if you try opposing katsuki 💀

anyways, when your surgery is completed— he eventually musters the courage to just put all of his nervous feelings aside for now, and take care of you like the sweetheart he is!

knows a shit ton of food (courtesy to his quirk) so he cooks you something new everyday during recovery

during your recovery, tamaki isn’t fond of the idea of you walking around, doing things as if nothing happened. he ends up making sure you stay in bed, by staying in your room for days

it might take a while for him to be reassured that you won’t accidentally end up in a ditch again, but for now— you’re carpooling with the big three

worried about your grades because of the time you’ve missed during your recovery? no worries! tamaki made an extra copy of notes, and basically summarized it in a way you could understand!

it’s a rollercoaster 💀 but at least this made tamaki take initiative, even without being pushed to do so!

let’s just say, mirio and nejire are really proud of him :))

he’s been wondering why he hasn’t seen you in a few hours, and on top of that— he hasn’t been able to contact you

like,, at all. but, he thought you were just feeling ill— so he decided that he was going to head over to your place after his tasks were taken care of.

but that’s all forgotten, when he finally gets word that you’ve gotten in a car crash— and that’s why you weren’t there

he literally freezes in place, and his reaction was almost like he saw the endeavor-nomu fight all over again.

the idea of his love being in critical state, made the normally calm todoroki placed in distress

after being calmed down by his fellow classmates, he quickly abandons whatever he was doing, so he could rush to the hospital

currently, you were in surgery. he appeared pretty calm on the outside, but internally— he was a mess. though, he did have to keep it together for you

when shouto finally meets you out of surgery, his gaze is soft “hi love— no, don’t stand up! just stay there. do you remember what happened?”

your description of it all isn’t the best, but he couldn’t blame you at all

if another driver crashed into you, it’ll be an intimidating encounter,, he won’t be physical, but his words will be harsh— not even caring about the fact that the driver is literally quaking in their shoes

and if you were in the passengers seat, shouto will briefly look at them with pure disappointment— he can’t really help it,,

but he can’t find himself being mad if you were the driver, he’s just glad that you’re still with him as you could tell, shouto’s only soft for you

immediately goes shopping for groceries after he takes you back, and you’ve guessed it! he makes you soba, since you’re fresh out of the hospital

insists that you stay bed ridden, and you can’t seem to oppose— since he’s giving you the softest of gazes.

unintentionally isolates you during the entire recovery stage, because he’s so absorbed with taking care of you— that he didn’t even think if you wanted to see your classmates

not that you’re complaining,, you get to see shouto and only shouto for an entire week or so!

he lets your classmates and friends see you after a bit, but he insists that they don’t speak too loudly— worried that they’ll accidentally ache your head

(that’s when everyone found out about shouto’s great caretaking ability)

worried about your grades and classes? shouto will handle it. he’ll reach out to your teachers/professors, and he’ll try to make some negotiations, he makes sure to tell them that you were taking time off because of a health emergency

will he immediately let you be in a car by yourself after? hm,, maybe not— it’ll take some time for you to be able to drive alone again. if you need to go somewhere by car, he’ll accompany you :))

he will NOT let another accident happen, not on his watch! his heart wouldn’t be able to handle it

Ah, I’m sure in the future Bakugou and Izuku will be on civil terms, but here’s the thing anon. Deku was a name with a negative connotation given to Izuku the degrade him - someone Izuku holds dear changed the meaning for him, made it something positive, and Izuku took the name back and made it his own, like a phoenix reborn from its ashes. It was a positive thing because it used to be a negative one, you follow me? It also didn’t have anything to do with Bakugou. Izuku took that name away from him, he didn’t accept Deku as a name to show some sort of positive change in his relationship with Bakugou, it was more about him cutting Bakugou of a source of power he had over him. It was distancing himself from Bakugou, not growing closer

Kacchan doesn’t have anything like that tied to it, it’s just a childish name Izuku has been using since he was four, most probably because everyone used to call Bakugou that - Bakugou doesn’t actually care for the name, or else he would have found a way to make Izuku stop using it. He doesn’t like it, but he doesn’t actively dislike it either, he just does not care, right? So there’s no way him accepting it as the way the whole world knows him as would be some sort of positive change for him, imho

What I meant when I said that I really hope it doesn’t happen is that all it would be for Bakugou is just yet another smack on the growing list of things gone wrong for him - there’s no way Bakugou would willingly accept such a childish name as his hero name just for the hell of it, one thing is growing up and a whole other thing is him making a 180° on his personality like that. So, like, I really don’t want it to happen because I want Bakugou for once to have things go as he wishes, but considering the amount of times the narrative has punished Bakugou and how often his plans have gone on the opposite direction compared to what he was working for, would I be surprised if that choice too were to be taken from him? Absolutely not

As for Todoroki, as I said I have never spent time thinking about his hero name? I kind of assumed he actually wanted to be known as Shouto, but you really never know with him! His character is always going in directions I don’t expect one bit, so his hero name too, if it comes, is probably gonna be something I hadn’t seen coming at all haha

They were on the same team during the cavalry battle! And!! That’s about it!!! Horikoshi has doodled them together now and again in his twitter sketches but as far as canon goes that should be the only significant interaction they’ve had. I don’t mind the ship?
