Eggtober 11th 2023
Tumblr media
"Wiggly": Flan with Berries
(Clip Studio Paint, Gouache Brush, Dry Gouache Brush, some Pencil brush for detail, and the Circle tool and perspective tool for the plate. 30 colors. Around 1 hour and 30 minutes.)
Speedpaint at the end of the post.
I really should do some one to one studies one of these days. The shine on top was insanely fun to draw and fiddle with as was the shine on the berries, but the shine on the plate syrup is a little funky to me. Need more practice for sure but still happy with how it turned out. There's more here that I like and had fun with than I struggled with.
Hopefully the syrup isn't too sticky for @lady-quen's Breadbugs.
Technically an eggy pudding more than an overt egg, but I think it counts for @quezify's Eggtober. Am I playing a little loose with the rules? Absolutely. But it's either studies of various eggy foods or I'm gonna become bootleg quezify and only draw fried eggs every day. Like, yes, I'm basically the egg understudy because for two years I have drawn an egg a day for an entire month because of Ruben, but, like. I'm not here to stand in a fabulous shadow or step on any fabulous toes. I am here to draw edible egg. That has been my shtick since the first Eggtober. I am of course TRYING to stick to dishes that are well known for eggs being a major ingredient or dishes where the egg element is overtly visible, obviously. So you're probably not going to see a cheesecake here for example. Not for Eggtober, anyway. Cheesecake is much more well known for the cream cheese and the crushed cookie crust.
But, as with last year, you will be getting more than just "Here's a fried Egg." @quezify has that covered for sure. But you will definitely see loads of fried eggs. I still have 2 very nice fried egg ideas in my queue of things to draw, after all. But sometimes you just gotta play around. "Yes, flan is not egg. But it's known for including lots of eggies to get that custard nice and smooth and spongy and bouncy. Cheating every once in a while with a souffle or a flan is allowed because I say so. There's egg in there as a main ingredient. Fight me. XD
In all seriousness, what counts and what doesn't is wibbly anyway. Because, like, mayo is very much an eggy thing. The eggs stabilize the emulsion. Without them the mayo would just be separated oil and acid like vinegar or lemon juice. Hollandaise is also egg for the same reason. But if you add the mayo to a bunch of tuna, well, that gets wibbly right? It's the basis of tuna salad and definitely has egg in it, but the tuna ratio makes it much more tuna than mayo and therefore much more tuna than egg.
Unless you're a purist that think egg must be overt and independent in the dish, in which case fried egg, boiled egg, poached egg, and scrambled egg are about all you can get away with here, with various sauces. Which would be a fun challenge, I guess. But I am much more a form and constitution neutral participant. If it looks like an egg or if it contains significant egg, I am counting that. That's how we do it here on my blog. Categories are just wibbly boxes and I am playing fast and loose with them. Because it's fun. (This isn't really directed at anyone by the way. I'm just an anxious bean and I like to preempt arguments rather than have them.) But yeah, Egg King Ruben said I can draw whatever I want forever, so there. 😝
(Edit, forgot the gosh darn speedpaint again!)

None of the bat children are neurotypical here's some stims
Dick is tippity-tapping away on every surface, making some funky fresh beats on the table in the middle of a meeting until someone tells him to "Fucking stop it, Dick", not to mention he's never sitting correctly in a chair. Also did excited flappy hands a lot as a kid, much less now.
Jason chews on shit. All of the things. Nibbled off the eraser on every pencil he's ever had, bit the rubber grips off of pens, chews on the inside of his mouth, bites his nails, etc etc. Took to gum after the ninth time he bit his nails too much and they bled. Chews the fingertips of his gloves when he's thinking and they are covered in holes.
Tim twirls things in his hands and twists rubber bands and hair elastics back and fourth. He spins his staff around and makes a point of showing off the tricks he can do without even thinking about it. Rocks a little when he's stressed out, not uncommon to see him rocking away in front of the Bat-Computer working on a case. Whistles all the time, mimics bird calls.
Steph: Pop sounds. Will be baking/doing chores and making popping noises the whole way. Knows how to make the water drop sound as well. When she was younger she did that thing while she was standing where she would twist and let her arms rag doll around her (I don't know how to describe it but if you've done it you're picking up what I'm putting down).
Cass: In a similar vein as Dick's tapping, Cass snaps her fingers and makes little patterns. Repeatedly cracks knuckles and other joints. She's one of those people who can twist in a very unassuming way and the most guttural crack comes from her spine and everyone's just like 0.O
Duke: Humming and knuckle cracking, drums his fingers on the table and is tapping his foot so fast it makes the speedsters turn their heads. Dedicated a decent period of time learning how to make his tongue into different shapes.
Damian: Really likes soft/fluffy textures and will rub the fabric against his lips and face, and just generally brush his hands over it repeatedly. He will sit with Titus for hours petting him, not just because he likes petting the dog but because Titus' fur is a texture he enjoys.

CHERRI HOW DO YOU SHADE HAIR I NEED TO KNOW
Tumblr media
HOWDY VEE!! 👋 I'm happy to answer and flattered you'd like to know! 🙏🩷
Lets bring Marko to the spolight in my WIP for this one, shall we?
Tumblr media
Now, I use ClipStudio for my art, but I'm sure any other program works just fine! I use a simple pencil/sketch pen for my shading, cause it goes well with my scratchy lines hehe.
Tumblr media
I use a lighter shade of the hair color base, and start from the outside large, and make it smaller while working in to the hairline. Make sure all the lights go in the right angle so it doesn't look funky! And you can add the lighting wherever and whatever feels right.
Tumblr media
I then repeat the process with a lighter color inside the previous lighting! Simple as that.
Tumblr media
And then I add the darker shading to any places that need it! Usually if the shading doesn't look right, I just use a spray/blend brush with a darker color at the base of the head.

I just realized that I have never actually shared the end result of my tattoo. I love it every day a little bit more, least of all because it's actually got some hidden meanings and nods to some important things in my life. It got a bit long (and pretty emotional, oh my) so more under the cut if you wanna know
The colors, rather, the brush strokes in the background. Red, blue, purple and orange. If you know me, you know that I am a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fan. But that is not a big enough word tbh. The turtles have accompanied me all my life. My first pajama was turtles themed, I wanted to learn to ride a skateboard because of Mikey pretty much all my teen years. But most importantly, and most emotionally for me, I distinctly remember watching a turtles episode from the 1987 cartoon at a friend's house while my mother attended my father's funeral. I don't remember much of that time, only being 5 years old, but I remember crouching behind a sofa and looking over the back of it to watch the turtles have adventures. Maybe that's where it really started, who knows. I just know that these funky guys mean a lot to me for reasons I might not even be able to explain to myself properly. These colors bring me joy, so they had to be there.
And then, the sunflower. I wanted that there because of Mob Psycho 100, an anime that has not just changed the way I look at the world and at myself. I am the protagonist of my own life. My life is my own. If I can change then others can change too. It's easy to want to be easily palatable (is that the word?) for others, to get their approval, to get them to like you. It's taken me some odd 34 years to realize that I only have to be palatable for myself. I have to look in the mirror and see someone that I can get behind, a person worthy of love and friendship and I am worthy of it, everyone is worthy of it no matter who you are, how you look or what you can do. You are worthy already by just being you and even if you aren't quite there yet you are still worthy. We are all worthy of being happy. I am allowed to be silly and cringe and not act like my age. I live my life the way I want.
Because I am the protagonist of my own life and if I don't write the story, who will?
The last one is the crows feather with the green accents. This is a bit of an obscure one. As some of you know, I have written fanfiction for years. It got me through some tough times during high school. Then adult life hit and I stopped. I stopped writing my original stories too. I can't even say why it just felt like a chore, probably because I got so discouraged with my own skills and my own expectations for myself. Then I slowly got back into it, writing a real short one shot for Monkie Kid and realizing that I have missed it quote a lot. And then Encanto came along. This movie that has inspired me so much that it felt like I suddenly couldn't stop writing even if I wanted to.
And then I got the idea for "A place for crows" and the rest is history I guess? The love and encouragement I received where phenomenal. That story made me fall in love with story telling again, it consumed me for pretty much a complete year. And it brought some of the most wonderful people, beloved friends from all over the world, into my life. I am so greatful to this Fandom, to this story, or rather the things this story has brought into my life.
So the feather symbolized my love for writing and just fandom spaces in general, this wonderful microcosmos I can call home.
The brushes and pencil are a given, my love for art and drawing which have also been big factors in rediscovering myself
This text got long, I just typed it down without pausing and I'm not gonna go over it again for spelling or something like that. Take it as it came out of me, with all my love and emotional bloodletting.
Love you all.

okay okay so. i downloaded the knucklehead brush and it feels very,,,, weird?? right out of the box? like the lines are choppier/aded unless i'm drawing a very specific way. this might be a lot to ask and you definitely don't have to, but you said you moved the procreate sliders around on the brush, can you please show what your settings are if you remember which ones you moved?
Oh yeah the sliders i moved around are in the download already, but one other thing that's different is the pressure sensitivity I have set for my Apple Pencil.
Tumblr media
Also I draw super, super small, my brush size is always minimum or barely higher than that.
Tumblr media
So yeah it feels pretty funky outside of these specific conditions and I don't really know how to tweak it to maintain the same look and feel at larger sizes but since people keep asking what I draw with I thought I'd just put it up for access

I take Christmas REAL SERIOUSLY and if you tell me “festive dress is expected” expect and arch elf on your doorstep
The beret is upholstery velvet because it was the perfect dark green colour and I thought the stiffness would help with the shape, it did but at what cost? My fingies that was the cost, it was so harrrrrd to push through multiple layers of thick ass velvet so that’s a thing I learnt
The ears are multiple layers of latex on these hooky over your real ears elf ears, then dusted with flour (couldn’t find powder works the same) and then spirit gummed to my ears, they came out super realistic cos the seam was in the curve of my ear, I also added a couple coats of alcohol paint to tint them and also some blush, if they were any taller I’d add some cotton to keep the shape but I don’t think I needed to with these ones
I did heavy blush and gold glitter on my cheeks (if I had one I would’ve done a crème blush and added glitter while it was tacky) and some dark eyeliner and curled my hair and promptly messed up the fringe with a clip cos I didn’t want it to touch my face
The shirt is second hand and painted with glitter fabric paint straight from the bottle, I drew it on the shirt first to map it out (use a pencil or chalk) which was suuuuuuuper handy but even still I made mistakes but it’s busy enough that you don’t notice (there’s a beautiful drawing I made of the pattern it took so long to wrap my head around, I traced it on insta)
The necklace was made of the funky bell charms I painted blue and an old necklace I took apart and a bunch of gold beads, the blue paint is an iridescent nail polish with a dry brushing of silver, the tassels are made from a gold trim I cut and rolled into tassels and held in place with a couple stitches and probs some hot glue, I know I sewed em to the beads, I like to think about what’s the most structurally sound way to affix something, it helps with wear and means I don’t have any last minute breaks
Make it strong cos I know I don’t wanna be worrying that my costume is gonna fall apart if I breathe too hard, I wanna run around like a lunatic!
Learn from my mistakes, ask Le questions :)

i am sorry if you already asked, but what is it the brushes you use?
howdy! No problem at all.
I use a whole lotta brushes sooo it really depends on the piece. I’ve recently switched over to clip studio paint for most of my drawings, so I’ll give you those!
for the agent cooper piece I did a week ago, I used the funky square ink from Seansketches on Instagram for the sketch; it’s my favorite sketching brush currently. I’m so sorry but I don’t remember where I got the coloring brush,,, I just know it’s called the Frankenstein brush ;; I’ll reblog this post again if I find a link! Pretty much any pencil brush will do, I just like the scratchiness. I use a lotta grungy brushes from Phorigami on Instagram.
for my previous stuff before the cooper piece, I used the Badass Ink Brush from Kyle’s Ink Box, and watercolor brushes from the watercolor Maxpack.
for the background of the Texas Chainsaw piece (the flowers), I used the Kolormark brushes from True Grit Texture Supply. They’re the best marker brushes I’ve found, I highly recommend that pack

Late but for the artist ask game, perhaps 7? I love your art sm! 🩷
Oh man thanks so much <3
7. Any funky lil art tips?
Well different things work for different people but here are a few things I’ve found helpful:
1. If your poses look too stiff in pen or you just wanna fight perfectionism, try a pencil brush or a softer brush (especially on the sketch layer if you do one, ngl I use pencil brush for most of my finished lines too) - when you do little experimental brush strokes in pencil it blends in more than using a solid pen brush I find so you can play around more easily with the way the picture looks early on
2. Lineart looking “soulless”? Vary the line weights (basically the lineart should be thinner where there would be no shadows and thicker where there would be darker shadows) and add some smaller lines under details you want to emphasise (like around the eyes). Be careful not to overdo these things but different things work well for different styles. If you’re afraid of messing up how it will look by making changes, first make another layer and then use your brush to thicken up the lines in certain areas etc on that layer, then if you don’t like it you can edit it more or delete it easily without affecting your base lineart layer.
3. If you have an art idea that you know will probably take aaaages to draw, draw the roughest possible version (stick men will totally do) and just slap it on a canvas somewhere so it’s staring you in the face when you open your art app or sketchbook and that way you don’t ever have to forget it. So many of my comics spend a while just being stick men (at least three since December but I’m working on it). For some people it also helps them to write an image ID for an image they want to draw if they don’t have a tablet or paper handy to sketch it out. There are a lot of ways to make it easier to remember the thing even if it’s lengthy or detailed!

we should have gotten a scene of todo bending his powerful head over a desk and tutoring yuji. their calloused hands affectionately brushing over pencils, etc. in the process accidentally catching ryomen sukuna, greatest of demons, king on the blood throne, he-who-eats-his-enemies-hearts up to date on the last fun and funky 1000 years of japanese history.

HI
the werewolf rancher you posted on twitter!! very cool love him a lot!! how do you draw beards like that? lmfao i cannot ✊😔
fr ur art is very cool and this ghost guy looks funky also xoxo
haha, thank you! I like him too. this beard?
Tumblr media
I'll explain it through some pictures and also through my thought process --- and I'll use the ghost guy to explain it too :)
Tumblr media
so when I draw a beard I start with the shape, and I try to think about how the beard changes or accentuates the existing face shape. In this drawing, I want to make his face more angular, and bring out his chin. The shape extends from the temples down onto the jaw. It's also to remember that a beard has DIMENSION, it isn't just a flat shape, so I add some lines near the bottom to remind myself that its going to be turning in towards the neck there. You want to follow the shape of the jaw, it extends out through the beard.
Tumblr media
Next, I do a rough color blocking-in, with a lighter shade on top and a darker shade on the bottom, which adds that dimension I was talking about earlier. I use the shape I blocked out as a guide.
Tumblr media
Next, I erase the top guide lines and then I use my handy dandy blend tool. It will look weird at this point, but just ... trust the process. I use the all-purpose blending brush on photoshop for this, but any generic textured blending tool will work. I tend to stay away from the smooth ones because I like texture in my work.
I erase the top lines because, unless you've got REALLY thick beard hair and you've JUST come from a barber that likes doing solid, clean lines, beards have a gradient to them. (source: i have a beard)
Here comes the fun part.
Tumblr media
First, I texture with the darkest colors, adding individual hairs using single brush strokes. I use a pencil tool for this (I actually use the pencil tool for all of my linework, too. I like texture)
Tumblr media
And then I add the lighter colors on top! Since this beard is on someone who has grey streaks in his hair, I brought those grey hairs down into his facial hair. BUT: THE MOST IMPORTANT PART! I took the skin tone from AROUND the beard, and added single brush strokes of that at the top of the beard. What this does is create the idea of the skin underneath the beard AND helps texture that gradient, making it look both stylized and natural.
Another important thing to remember with beards is that the hair color varies WILDLY. Beard hair is coarse and textured and, unless the person has jet black hair, generally there is going to be some color variation in their beard. I have medium brown hair, and my facial hair is black at my temples and blonde on my chin - I think I have every possible natural color in there. But using that color variation will bring the beards you draw to life! Play around with it and find your style. It's really fun :)
(also, get into the ghost guy too. I swear hes fun!!!)
