Can you do most popular tags for Billy batson? This is so neat!

This is self-made. Date of creation: 25.03.2024
@billy-and-friends Here you go!
The tagwrangling on this character isn't entirely up to date (this is NOT meant as criticism towards the tag wranglers on Ao3 though because they do have an awful lot to do and I'm pretty sure they're doing that for free!), therefore I had to count some tag results manually that haven't been made synonyms with other tags yet.
Am I going overboard with the colourscheme recently?... Perhaps. If it bothers you guys, feel free to tell me.
The "/" between two tags means that they were made synonyms on Ao3 and therefore both will get you the same amount of hits.
I assume no guarantee or liability for the completeness, correctness and accuracy of this chart despite my best efforts.
Includes fanfictions in all languages available on Ao3, NOT English only.
Shiptags and character tags were NOT included.
More charts will follow. :)
Want to have a chart for different pairings, headcanons etc. in your favourite fandom? Send me an ask!

SPOP MOTU SPIN-OFF/SEQUEL IDEA THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!
Now I like many of you I REALLY hope the SPOP crosses over with the MOTU reboot(different from the sequel) coming this year, but if it DOESN’T-I have a GREAT idea for a spin-off/sequel!
LETS SAY-Despondos is outside of space and time so it flows a bit different, meaning Adora would AGE older than Adam, so genetically she’d still be his twin but chronologically she’d be his big sister.
I feel this works on two levels, because its important to make Adora both the mentor and the old standard for this series. Imagine it being like, the second Digimon series where the old main characters take mentor roles-BUT-they stay active as heroes and main characters.
The SECOND reason why is because I’d like to succeed where the 2002 series failed, in making Prince Adam the Billy Batson he was always destined to be. For real look it up, Filmation He-man was TOTALLY inspired by Shazam, ultimately Shazam by way of Conan the barbarian, whereas the comics were more Conan the barbarian by way of Flash Gordon, its ALL insane I know. Him being a Billy Batson would work better on another front, in him being more like a normal teenager. The 2002 series came close, but I feel they could’ve done better.
This concept would also work GANG-busters with Noelle’s plan for a She-Ra movie, where the best friend squad would go across the universe bringing back magic, WITH THAT-I see Adora finding some kid whom she doesn’t know in a wasteland planet, and that leads to him finding the sword of Power, making him HE-MAN Prince of Protection!
And YES-I make him Prince of Protection, because She-Ra has the sword of Protection and is Princess of Power(Mattel’s dropping the ball on name thematics is MY gain).
It’d also work better if they made TWO side-by side shows so it could work like Arrow and Flash, both sets of characters doing their own thing, but there’d be the occasional cross over. I don’t know HOW that’d necessarily work in a streaming show, but something like it would be cool.

Recently Viewed: SHAZAM!
Tumblr media
Armchair pop culture analysts drone on and on about “superhero fatigue,” but the current abundance of material isn’t the primary cause of that (largely exaggerated) issue; the real root of the problem lies in studios' over-reliance on soulless mimicry. Every time a comic book adaptation earns widespread critical acclaim and/or smashes box office records, corporate bigwigs race to replicate the secret recipe that will allow them to print money (see: The Dark Knight, The Avengers)—and, more often than not, end up face-planting at the starting line. DC’s SHAZAM! succeeds where the likes of Suicide Squad and Justice League fell short because it actually understands why audiences responded so favorably to its trailblazing predecessors: innovation always trumps shallow imitation.
(For even more compelling evidence, look no further than the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which—contrary to what its detractors would argue—constantly experiments with different tones, styles, and sub-genres.)
SHAZAM! isn’t only special because of the inherent novelty of its premise (the protagonist is a young boy capable of literally transforming into a Herculean demigod—the ultimate evolution of the adolescent power fantasy upon which the industry was built); it is further distinguished by its emphasis on characterization and theme over mere spectacle. Billy Batson is a fourteen-year-old orphan that refuses to play by the rules of the foster care system—after all, why should he settle for a “pretend family” when he knows that his birth mother is still somewhere in Philadelphia, just waiting to be found? When he is suddenly chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam to act as his champion in the war against the personifications of the Seven Deadly Sins, however, our hopelessly overwhelmed protagonist turns to his nerdy new brother (an unabashed Superman fanatic) for aid in mastering such fantastic abilities as the lightning of Zeus, the speed of Mercury, and the stamina of Atlas.
Tumblr media
Predictably, they behave with the level of responsibility and maturity you’d expect from a pair of teenagers, abusing Billy’s magical gifts in the pursuit of fame, fortune, and beer. But after their foolish antics (which they diligently record and post on YouTube, naturally) attract the attention of the nefarious Doctor Thaddeus Sivana—a previous candidate for the mantle of Shazam that was ultimately rejected for lacking a pure heart—the newly-christened Captain Marvel (I don’t give a damn what the lawyers say, that’s his name) must learn the true meaning of heroism in order to protect the ragtag bunch of misfits he now considers his siblings. And along the way, he discovers that “home” was never quite as far away as he thought.
Despite the seemingly monumental stakes (demons, mysticism, and metaphysical horror), the conflict remains charmingly small-scale—heck, the climactic battle takes place not in some bizarre alternate dimension or on the surface of a remote alien planet, but smack-dab in the middle of a Christmas carnival. This is due in large part to the relatively modest budget, but director David F. Sandberg turns this potential disadvantage into his greatest asset, devoting the vast majority of the 132-minute running time to developing the characters and the relationships between them, thus ensuring that viewers are totally invested in the action (and, consequently, making them more inclined to suspend their disbelief and forgive the less-than-stellar visual effects).
Tumblr media
All that being said, I sincerely hope that there’s no misguided attempt to distill this film’s triumphs down to a simple formula. SHAZAM! soars because its originality makes it feel fresh, exciting, and surprising; trying to cannibalize the qualities that make it work (particularly its self-deprecating sense of humor and lighthearted atmosphere) without comprehending its underlying strengths would only end in disaster.
(Let’s be honest, though: if we interpret the plot as a metaphor for the DC Extended Universe itself, then Sivana symbolizes Warner Bros. Entertainment—always trying to exploit shortcuts in its endless quest to seize greatness, rather than acknowledging its limitations and learning to stand on its own merits.)
And now, if you’ll permit me to geek out for a moment, here is a list of my favorite of the movie’s many winks, references, and Easter eggs (SPOILERS below, obviously):
Tumblr media
Billy and his siblings attend a school called Fawcett Central. The original Captain Marvel Adventures comic books were released under the banner of Fawcett Publications before DC acquired the rights to the character.
A flashback shows Billy begging his mother to buy him a stuffed tiger. Mister Tawky Tawny, a talking anthropomorphic tiger, was a frequent recurring character in the source material.
When Sivana initially arrives at the Rock of Eternity, the camera lingers on an unassuming caterpillar in a jar; fans will immediately recognize this as Mister Mind, a classic Captain Marvel villain. When Billy drops by later, the glass prison is shattered, and the fiend is nowhere to be seen. I expected that to be the full extent of his little cameo; imagine my delight when he returned for the mid-credits scene—and with several lines of dialogue, to boot!

SHAZAM! FILM REVIEW
Tumblr media
Shazam!, directed by David F. Sandberg, follows 14 year old foster kid Billy Batson (Asher Angel) as he moves into a new foster home after searching for his birth mom. After protecting his new foster brother from bullies though, he’s brought to the Rock of Eternity and given the powers to become Shazam (Zachary Levi).
This film had a lot to live up to from the beginning. Comic “fans” constantly pitted this film against Captain Marvel given the complicated naming history between the two and this reinforces the Marvel vs. DC debate that’s honestly so idiotic. There’s also the fact that many haven’t liked the majority of DCEU films up to this point. I'm not one of those people, with the only DCEU film I actively dislike being Suicide Squad, but I'm in the minority of that. Luckily Shazam! continues DC’s upward trend in quality that began Wonder Woman (minus Justice League) and is honestly one of the better DC films to be released in recent years.
This film is made or completely shattered by the performances, mainly those of Shazam and Freddie Freeman. Thankfully the casting of both are pitch perfect and make the film what as good as it is a lot of the time. Zachary Levi is a great Shazam simply given the fact he’s able to act like a fourteen-year-old who’s been given super powers. He's so believable in the role and there’s a joy to him that is reminiscent of Christopher Reeve as Superman. I don’t love those original Superman films, but Reeve is absolutely wonderful as that character and you can see shades of that in Levi’s performance. Plus, he has such great chemistry with Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddie. Grazer is able to balance the heart and humor that this film as a whole balances incredibly well. Pretty much, when Glazer is playing for laughs, the film is light-hearted, but when he’s playing for heart, the film feels like a gut punch.
A lot of the nearly seamless tonal shifts come thanks to director David F. Sandberg though. He clearly understands these characters well and by understanding these characters he is able to shift the tone accordingly. There’re also several sequences that feel straight out of a horror film, which makes sense since Sandberg made his name known as a horror director. Really though, it was smart to give a horror director like Sandberg the reins to a film that essentially sets the template for magic in the DCEU because he’s done well creating supernatural worlds in the past. It'd honestly be great to see him tackle a Justice League Dark film in the future, with Shazam in the lead.
In a very Marvel style move though, the weakest part of this film is the villain, Doctor Sivana. Mark Strong plays him extremely well and his motivations are clear, lining up well with Billy’s, but the character as a whole didn’t really work in the almost grounded world presented in this film. Sivana is at his best when the story is absolutely insanity, i.e. The Multiversity, but here, while he’s good, it didn’t really feel like he chewed the scenery enough. Plus, a lot of his introductory scenes felt oddly edited and abruptly put into the film.
As a whole, Shazam! is a wonderful addition to the DCEU and it’ll be great to see where Billy Batson goes from here on out.

Shazam!
Tumblr media
You and I know each other pretty well by now. I think it’s pretty clear from the contents of this blog that I’m a Marvel girl, through and through, and as such you might expect me to carry some irrational bias against any DC property that comes my way. But I’m here to tell you that any bias I have towards DC films is 1) completely rational and 2) on a case-by-case basis. When I first saw the trailers for Shazam! I wasn’t sure which version of DC I would be getting, but its comedic tone and somewhat tongue-in-cheek treatment of a silly premise (a teen is given the powers of a wizard and turns into super buff Zachary Levi in spandex when he says the wizard’s name) gave me high hopes. So was this more Wonder Woman or Suicide Squad? Well...
Happily, much more the former than the latter! Henry Gayden’s script leans in hard on the humor and the heart, and a tight, well-crafted story with fun and electric performances from the film’s leads means DC has finally cracked their own version of the Marvel formula to great success.
Some thoughts:
This whole opening sequence is a REAL rollercoaster. What a dick of a dad. Also who names their kid Thad? That’s just asking for trouble. And in terms of the “test” to determine if a person is pure of heart...I just find it incredibly hard to believe that any 7-year-old ever is going to be like “Oh no I’m not gonna touch this mystical magic orb” when you’re literally goading him to do it? That’s entrapment!
I love that the wizard is Djimon Honsou - his voice really sounds like it belongs to an eternal and wise being, doesn’t it?
I do have some questions about this wizard business though. Because if they were created to protect against the 7 Deadly Sins...does that mean they get their powers from God? Like, Jesus’ dad? Because - and I know we’re talking about a movie in which a wizard gives a little boy superpowers - that just seems unrealistic.
Nice little Easter egg - director David F. Sandberg also directed Annabelle: Creation, and you can see miss Annabelle herself on the lowest shelf in the pawn shop that Billy locks the cops in.
For a movie with such a silly premise, there’s a lot of extreme emotional peril. The car crash, the kid getting lost, everything with Billy’s search for his mom - for fuck’s sake, there are bullies kicking a disabled kid in the stomach - there’s a lot of trauma bubbling beneath the surface here, and the film is all the richer for it.
Jack Dylan Grazer is absolutely amazing in this. His comedic timing is perfect, and he’s all barely contained need for love and friendship underneath. It’s a great performance, and his chemistry with both 14-year-old and grown-up Billy Batson/Shazam (Asher Angel and Zachary Levi) is fantastic.
I love love LOVE that the hero is the one directly responsible for making his own supervillain nemesis. It’s excellent narrative planning and symmetry, and you just don’t see it in movies enough, especially with all these comic book superheroes around. The last one I can really think of is Age of Ultron, and even that doesn’t feel as thematically rich as it does here.
Of course we have to talk about the foster family. I love this multiracial, multicultural foster family who loves each other and sticks up for each other, god MY HEART.
One of my favorite throw away lines is about peer reviewed studies about superheroes - can you imagine?
The character design of these stone monsters who turn into the actual 7 deadly sins are super intense, but honestly it’s much scarier when Mark Strong is just hanging out and fucking shit up. But the tongue situation with these monsters is uh, a problem.
Note: there is a Very Good Dog in a very pivotal scene!
A superhero who doesn’t know how to use his powers, causes his own disasters, makes people pay him, and acts as a showoff and a bully. This is such a better arc than most hero origin stories, and both Asher Angel and Zachary Levi really dig into this super juicy role in full force. Billy’s a victim of the foster care system and his reluctance to trust or let anyone in, even when he’s literally invincible, is just such excellent storytelling and I really really loved every minute of his character study.
Did I cry? Yes, after the big group Shazam! That shit is gold to my found family-loving heart.
A big villain showdown that was actually interesting, a villain plot that made sense (based entirely on character) and a victory that feels earned - this is just so damn refreshing.
Weirdest end credits scene ever though.
I honestly can’t recommend this film enough. It resonated with me in all the right ways, its laughs are plentiful, and its peril is fucking PERILOUS. Every element works together in the best ways and I honestly can’t wait to see more of this particular corner of the DC universe.

So I have this fic idea that is ridiculous and super plot heavy, It will prob never get written, but I wanted to share one scene. Just imagine Captain Marvel getting like. Aggressively cuddled. By about ten little girls that he saved. Like five-year old girls who are determined to protect captain marvel from any naysayers. Do not talk smack about Captain Marvel in their presence. They are the Billy Batson Defense Squad. (I love all your fics btw! Esp love all you hcs about characters
That is precious. I bet Captain Marvel is the ultimate unproblematic fav. Like all the parents buy their kids Captain Marvel stuff cause he’s a much better hero/role model than some other heroes. All the little girls love him because he’s big and strong but at the same time he acts nice and gentlemanly. But Cap appeals to all young people really, he’s a kind, compassionate adult that knows how to talk to kids. They love him. They form a fanclub and Billy is so embarrassed. Imagine a Beatles-esque reaction when he’s out on patrol and pretty soon he’s being chased by an army of young boys and girls. It is so pure and the League is jealous. (thank you!)
