Understanding ASOUE Enigmas: The Duchess and the Hiatus
For many years, I have pondered how to satisfactorily resolve the Miss K Enigma, the Prufrock Prep Enigma, the Masked Ball Enigma, the R's Letter Enigma, and (the greatest of them all) the Secret Letter Enigma in TSS.
Let me clarify each of these enigmas and how far I have solved them.
Let's start with what is canonically proven: Despite Lemony Snicket starting to write TBB (and possibly TRR) around the time of the main events described in ASOUE, he only managed to publish these books (and TWW) several years later. After the publication of TWW, there was a hiatus of many years until TMM was published. This period is commonly referred to as the "Great Hiatus". You can find a detailed discussion and proof of the Great Hiatus in the canonically-accepted source here: asoue.proboards.com/thread/36354/change-lemonys-life-submitted-jean
Understanding the Great Hiatus is key to resolving the Masked Ball Enigma, the R's Letter Enigma, the Miss K Enigma, and the Prufrock Prep Enigma. However, they cannot be fully solved through this alone. Let's consider each case separately.
The Prufrock Prep Enigma: In TAA, Lemony claims that Prufrock Prep has been closed for many years at the time of the book's publication. And it was closed after Mrs. Bass was arrested for theft. However, in LSTUA, we part with an event that indicates that an ASOUE book had already been published when Prufrock Prep was still operating, and Mrs. Bass was not yet arrested. Carmelita Spats was still studying there. The enigma is: how could Prufrock Prep be operating if ASOUE had already been published, and Lemony stated in TAA that the school had been closed for many years? More than that:  According to LSTUA, in Chapter 9, an enemy of Lemony sought information about the reptiles from Uncle Monty's collection in the book TRR. This book was in the library of Prufrock Prep, at that time Prufrock Prep was open and running. However, in writing the TAA book, Lemony says Prufrock Prep was closed many years ago.
The answer is: considering the great hiatus that occurred between the publication of TWW and TMM, it's quite possible that Prufrock Prep continued to operate for some time after the publication of TBB, TRR, and TWW. After the publication of one or more of these books, the teacher known as Miss K was at Prufrock Prep, bringing with her one of the already published ASOUE books. After this event, Prufrock Prep was closed. A few years passed, and then Lemony published TMM and TAA and could then claim that the school had been closed for many years. This explains why one of Lemony's enemies found the TRR book at Prufrock Prep. The book had already been published in Lemony's universe, and the school was still in operation when this enemy was there. However, years later, when Lemony wrote TAA, the school had already been closed for many years.
Miss K Enigma: In Nero's letter to Carmelita Spats' parents, which is printed in Chapter 8 of the UA, Nero states that he hired Miss K to become a teacher. At that time Mr. Remora had retired. Mrs. Bass was still at her job, but she had to take time off in order to settle matters with the bank (probably rob the bank). Miss K took Prufrock several books of interest to VFD, including one of the ASOUE books. The enigma is: Who is Miss K? The first time I read it, I evidently thought it was Kit Snicket. But, Miss K is not Kit Snicket, as TBB could only be published after Kit Snicket's death. In LSTUA, there is a picture of a woman with children at Prufrock Prep. Whether this woman is Miss K or not is debatable. But the fact is that there is an observation from Lemony about her ("will I see her again?"), indicating that the person in the picture is an associate of Lemony who is alive but with whom he has not had contact for a long time. She is someone with whom he wishes to keep contact. We know it's not Kit or Beatrice, as both were already dead at this time.
The answer is: That is R. Sometimes, the most obvious answers are right in front of us, and we simply don't see them.  We have access to Lemony's life story, albeit fragmented in TBL and in LSTUA. Canonically, in Lemony's life, there were only three women who were his friends and remained in his life throughout his life: Kit, Beatrice, and R. If Kit and Beatrice were already dead, the only person who could bring feelings of nostalgia to Lemony is R, the Duchess of Winnipeg. Why had R been away from Lemony for such a long time? According to TBL, R had become a duchess after her mother's death, and evidently, the service of a duchess was laborious and carried out far from the City where Lemony usually operated. Even when Lemony went to R's house, there's nothing to suggest that he and she had time to interact. He was desperately trying to find a supposed Beatrice, and was captured shortly thereafter.
What I'm saying is that when we put R into the equation, along with the Great Hiatus, everything beautifully fits together. During the writing of TCC, TSS, and TGG, R was pretending to be Kit, and Lemony knew it. Lemony referred to her as "my sister" in secret letters, he arranged a meeting with her at Hotel D (which had been restored), and even said in TGG that this sister Kit (he mentioned her by name) could be saved through a small, herbed piece of toast. Obviously, this Kit Snicket couldn't be the real Kit Snicket, because Kit was dead. To move from "this couldn't be Kit" to "this is R" may seem like a big leap. In addition to being a friend of Lemony, in R's letter to Lemony recorded in LSTUA chapter 2, R makes an important observation: "There are many of us left, Mr Snicket, but we're ready to help you in any way we can." This means that R offered to help Lemony. This sentence is significant. Moreover, R indicates that she has great disguise skills, as she states in the letter that she has disguised herself as Lemony Snicket impersonating someone else. Then she sends photos to Lemony. She makes a single request to Lemony: Study these photos. Among the photos is the photograph of herself with Kit Snicket, both wearing the same clothes and striking an identical pose. Although they are of different heights (when they were children), the resemblance between the two is obvious. At the time when R's letter was being written, Kit had already died. But R does not put the information that Kit was dead in writing in the letter. Everything in this letter takes into consideration the possibility that Lemony's enemies could read the letter. Either way, R trusted that Lemony, by studying the photographs along with the subsequent events, would deduce that R was going to assume the identity of Kit Snicket, and he should go along with the ruse and take advantage of it.
The idea of R seems to have worked very well. We find a reply letter from Lemony to a supposed "sister" in LSTUA page 192: "My dear sister, I understand how desperate our situation has become, but it's already unpleasant enough for people to read about the Baudelaires, I can't imagine who would dare to help them." The question had been: "Is there something a concerned citizen can do if he or she wants to help the Baudelaires?" Evidently, at the time this letter with this question was sent to Lemony (and which had been sent to him under the false name of Kit), Lemony had already published at least one ASOUE book, since in the reply he talks about people reading about the Baudelaires. In other words, Kit was already dead. Another important detail is that, according to TE, when Kit died she thought Lemony was dead, and she had no way to contact him. So, the person who was passing as Kit, was most likely R. When Lemony wrote secret messages in the books for his sister, he was sending messages to R.
It's interesting how everything really fits together, taking into account this timeline. At the Masked Ball, Lemony went there believing that Beatrice was alive and hiding in R's house. The excuse for Beatrice hiding instead of searching for her children was that, if her survival became public, Olaf would have no reason to preserve the life of at least one of her children if they were captured. Thus, Lemony tried to communicate for 14 years with the supposed Beatrice (the Great Hiatus lasted more than 14 years) to pass on the information: "Count Olaf is dead." It was because he believed that Beatrice was alive that Lemony stopped writing about the children for so long. Additionally, during these 14 years Lemony was engaged in another mission: producing TBL and finding the My Silence Knot poem. And here, we enter an Extra Enigma: The TBL part 3 enigma, which is a secret Enigma of TBL.
TBL Enigma Part 3 - To be clear, this is part 3, because there are other enigmas in TBL that draw more attention than this one, and which appeared much earlier. But this enigma is as follows: In Beatrice Junior's last letter to Lemony, she claims to be 10 years old. How could the Great Hiatus last more than 14 years, if Beatrice Junior was only ten years old when she tried to meet with Lemony?
Answer: Beatrice Junior tried to meet with Lemony after the publication of TBB and TRR but before the publication of TWW, in other words, before the Great Hiatus began. Most interestingly, this is canon. According to BB To LS #5, Beatrice Jr read some of the ASOUE books and was able to compare what she had heard from the Baudelaires themselves with what Lemony had written. However, according to BB to LS #2, Beatrice Jr was not able to identify what a paperweight in the shape of one of the lake's leeches was. More than that, according to TWW, Lemony was still living in a building while he was writing TWW. He hadn't yet started to be a fugitive from the authorities (despite apparently having problems with them). That's why Beatrice Jr was able to rent an apartment above the apartment where Lemony lived in the Rhetorical Building. This was because Lemony was still living there. Lemony wrote to the editor (TBL) that he spent years trying to find the letters and items that form TBL. This also happened during the Great Hiatus.
Something important in all of this is understanding that both Kit's death and Olaf's death were not publicly disclosed until the publication of TE. For not understanding that Olaf was already dead, the owner of the Prospero Ship thought that the enemy disguised as a cow was an accomplice of Count Olaf. But in fact, he was an accomplice of Genius. Who could this Genius be? There's no way to be sure, but one possibility is Esmé. After all, it was her fan club who managed to get the chorus of the Mamba Du Mal. But why did Lemony decide to reveal the death of the real Kit only in TE? He didn't reveal it before to protect R. But when he published TE, R had probably already died. In TGG we learn that the person who was pretending to be Kit needed to be saved, probably from an assassination attempt. Even if Lemony managed to save her that time, the assassins may have tried again and again until they succeeded. Thus, when Lemony published TE, it was no longer necessary to protect R's identity.

for day 5 of woevember of @asouefanworkevent, the masked ball
the masked ball is not a VFD event. rather, it's an old tradition of the duchess's family, passed down from one generation of the duchess to the next, like the ring with the letter R engraved upon it.
the most recent R, Duchess of Winnipeg, is a volunteer of the VFD, but her mother, the previous R, and her mother, also R, are not. (see: the end). so, naturally, duchess R (the most recent one)'s friends and associates from VFD are often invited to the masked ball, and the VFD volunteers have sometimes used the masked ball as a way of communicating with other volunteers.
however, one would be mistaken if one thinks that no VFD members have ever attended the masked balls held by R's mother, or grandmother, or great-grandmother, and so on. like R's family, and her family ring, VFD has been around for a long time. the Duchess's masked ball has always been quite popular event amongst the high society, and oftentimes influential people would attend, and previous generations of VFD members have also sometimes attended the ball for various different purposes, even if the Duchess at that time is not a VFD volunteer
R continues to hold the masked ball regularly, even amidst the schism, even if sometimes enemies of the volunteers also managed to sneak into the ball for nefarious purposes. it's an event that people who's on the lam or rumored to be dead may show up, since everyone's in masks with a proper reason. it's a time when old associates can meet.
in some way, it signifies hope - the hope of being able to meet an associate you have not been able to contact for sometime, the hope of the chance to confirm that a family member is safe and sound
year after year, as various members of VFD and its enemies meet their demise, fewer and fewer associates and enemies of R's show up at the masked ball each time. some of them she knows for a fact are confirmed dead - M for one. and G. and also G - not that it's ever quite clear whether she stood on the schism.
R continues hosting the masked ball, if she's able to at that time. L appears less and less frequently, but despite various "confirmations" of his death, he's possibly the one who's most likely to still be alive, since all those so-called confirmations are flimsy at best, featuring blurry pictures that could've been anybody in a hat.
sometimes she knows that L has showed up and left before they had a chance to talk, and she knows this because she would find little messages from him that he's left behind. an encrypted code on a little note hidden under the accordion, for instance, that can only be decoded if one is well-versed in poetry
when L's brother J first fell out of contact, and soon it's been said that nobody has been able to reach him, at first R thought he's just gone on the run like L did. perhaps planning to fake his death. she had hoped he would show up at her ball sometime soon - but he never did. instead, the daily punctilio featuring the death of olaf at some faraway village with the picture of J brought the worst news.
and then came the fire of hotel denouement, and also K who lost contact after that. barely any of R's associates or enemies show up for a long time, after that.
until one day L appears again - not at a masked ball, but just one a normal day - with his niece. kit and dewey's daughter, beatrice.
the little girl made a lot of efforts to find and reunite her family - including the children of beatrice and bertrand that R's heard so much about but have never met, and lemony, and dewey's triplets.
having old friends again at the next masked ball gives her a certain ache of nostalgia, but she's also so very glad to be able to see them again, after all these years, and away from their VFD identities that's bound them tight when they were younger. she's also so delighted to meet the kids - although maybe violet and klaus can hardly be called kids, now. they're older than when R and her friends had been getting drunk at the masked ball, decades ago.
everyone dress up for the masked ball. beatrice and sunny have never attended such a formal event and the girls are very thrilled. beatrice tells R that violet has taught her how to draw fake scars as R finds a costume for her, and R gets reminded of beatrice - the other beatrice, the first beatrice, whom violet must've learned the skill from.
sunny wears a pair of butterfly wings that once belonged to her mother. frank tells the story of how beatrice and kit used to pull the trick where beatrice wears the fancy wings and distract everyone's attention and kit uses the chance to do something discreetly as everyone's attention is focused on beatrice. sunny and beatrice listen attentively in wonder.
beatrice asks if her father attended the masked ball too - she's learned that his existence is mostly a secret, but considering that at a masked ball everyone can put on a mask, maybe this is his chance?
R confirms that dewey does indeed attend the masked balls sometimes. and that he and bertrand always manage to find each other, no matter what kind of masks they have on. "the elephant poem," sunny says, remembering what dewey has told her and her siblings.
"exactly," ernest says. "i've actually tried to pretend to be dewey once by reciting the poem to him. but B soon recognized me."
r: "were you actually surprised?" ernest, fondly nostalgic: "i guess not. he was always able to tell us apart."

Hello! 👋 What do u hc the clothing styles of the unfortunate gen kids as?/what sort of clothes do u think r their favourites? 🧥👔🧣
Unfortunate Gen Clothing's Styles/What Clothes They Wear Headcanons:
Violet: If she's not wearing her iconic dress (which either came from the 1950s or 1960s no one really knows) or her skirt (goes down to her knees, worn with white tights), she will be wearing purple in some way in her clothes (socks, shirt, jacket, etc). Violet also prefers to wear jeans and other durable material trousers with her blouses and shirts. The dress and skirt are the two exceptions.
Klaus: 100% dresses semi-formally. He likes bowties and regular ties, button vests (not sweater vest, thank you very much), chinos and dress pants and pleated pants, button-down shirts, and blazers. That's not to say Klaus doesn't have casual wear; he has a few windbreakers and jeans and regular short-sleeves shirt. He just won't be seen wearing those a lot in comparison.
Sunny: Haven't thought much on Sunny (given she is a baby throughout ASOUE), but I like to think as she grows up, she mainly wears casual clothes. Things like cargo pants, jeans, and shirts with graphics on them. Things that are loose on the body, but not too loose. Oh, that, and hair scrunches (yellow).
Duncan: Enjoys wearing wool/knit sweaters, as well as cardigans and sweater-vests (match with long button-downs) in cool weather a la early spring and fall. For warm spring and early summer weather, he wears striped short sleeves shirt or short button-down shirts, sometimes with a hoodie jacket with a zipper if it's on the colder side. For winter, he'll wear a strong windbreaker hoodie over whatever he's wearing. Regarding trousers, Duncan likes jeans, khakis, corduroys, and sweatpants (that last one is for home though).
Isadora: While she has wool/knit sweaters, she only wears them if it's a very cool/cold day that will remain cool/cold throughout. She mainly wears blouses with the puffy short sleeves, and sweatshirts with graphics on them. She's also the sort to wear double shirts; long-sleeve underneath and short-sleeve on top. On occasion, she will wear dress and skirts; Isadora prefers black dresses and skirts of any style and lengths. Most of the time, she wears Capri pants because she likes showing off her socks.
Quigley: Unlike his siblings, he wears rollnecks/turtlenecks. And unlike his siblings, he tends to cover up. He mainly wears long button-down shirts and sweatshirts, and if he has to wear a short-sleeve shirt, he'll wear a jacket over them. Trousers-wise, he wears sweatpants, jeans, drawstrings, and parachutes. When Quigley wears either his dress or skirt (the dress has long sleeves), he has to wear leggings with them. The only time he'll show his legs and arms is when at the beach because that would make him stand out a lot.
Carmelita. Mainly wears clothes of the color pink, white, and red especially pre-canon and in canon events. Her style here is poofy; she has to wear a poofy dress with ribbons or skirt, like a ballerina skirt (not tutu) or poodle skirt. She never wore pants until TPP. And in post-canon, Carmelita starts to wear more Capris and Pedal pushers (similar to Capris; they go higher up the lower calf), as well as wearing different colors (she got to change it up).
Fiona: Nautical Style Clothes(TM) is her main style. Anything that looks like it's something a sailor or navy person would wear or has a strong sailor/navy vibe to it (think sailor dresses, or the sailor blouse, or the most mainstream of them all, bell-bottoms), she has to get. Having live in a submarine all her life, Fiona finds herself wanting something that reminded her of her former home of the Queequeg. That said, she does has some non-Nautical clothes; overalls, jumper dresses, and rompers.
Friday: Having to wear only white on the Island, living on the mainland and seeing her options has Friday going over the moon with possibilities and combinations. Her main style in the first year in the Land of Districts is a colorful overalls (red, orange, or purple) or colorful denims (red, pink, sky blue), with a sweater (pastel colors usually) or sweatshirt with either her bright yellow or green sneakers.
Beatrice Baudelaire II: I also haven't given lot of thought for Bea II. I do like her wardrobe in Netflix ASOUE.The beret is something I really dig. I like to think she has more in different colors, like grey and white.
I hope you enjoy my surprisingly long answer, dear anon!

a series of unfortunate events x inside job crossover
aah i ADORE asoue, it was sort of mg gateway into conspiracy theories and shit, and i read it every year (i haven’t watched the series yet lol) . it fits so well with inside job so here’s a crossover ig lmao
so you know i ship mr poe (🖕) with jr and rand (🖕). rand would be literally perfect for arthur, because they’re both assholes who used to work for secret illuminati-like societies. jr originally just joined the dynamic bc mr poe was a banker and wanted the extra money but he ended up catching genuine feelings.
Tumblr media
violet and reagan would get along SO WELL like they’re both inventors who have gone through a lot of shit
reagan would also like klaus me thinks
gigi would love sunny so much djsjajnx i hc her to love babies <33 she’d always offer her smth like a carrot
if Montgomery wasn’t dead, I think he’d think reagan was extremely swag (who doesn’t tbh) then wanted to adopt her after hearing what happened to her as a kid (and as an adult)
idk I can’t rlly think of anything else but I hope u guys enjoy!!

Here is my take on who plays who:
Clifton Collins: He is half Mexican, so probably Oscar Diaz.
Stephen Fry: Could be Jeffery Richards or Mike Holleran. I really hope that Mike Holleran.
Sarah Shahi: I’m guessing and hoping that Zahra Bankston.
Rachel Hilson: I think she will play Nora Holleran.
Ellie Bamber: If Rachel isn’t playing Nora, then Ellie definitely will. But I think Ellie will be Princess Beatrice.
Aneesh Sheth: Amy or Cash, I think one of those two.
Polo Morin: He obviously will play Rafael Luna, due that the actor is Mexican and openly gay.
Ahmed Elhaj: Will be Pez! I have no doubts.
Akshay Khanna: He could be Shaan Srivastava.

Woah no way?? People (completely unprompted /s) want to hear my trans Shakespeare headcanons?? You bet I can do that.
I’ve done this once before:
But I have even more thoughts now!!
In no particular order:
Puck (A Midsummer Night’s Dream): Every single pronoun possible. He/she/they/it + all of the neopronouns and xenopronouns that exist currently or will ever exist. Fairy gender is always weird but Puck’s is extra weird.
Oberon (A Midsummer Night’s Dream): Fairy gender. Probably he/they/it?
Titania (A Midsummer Night’s Dream): More fairy gender. She/they/it?
Titania’s fairy attendants (Midsummer): Get a hat and fill it with various pronouns and draw them out at random for the fairies.
Benedick (Much Ado About Nothing): Could go either way, but I really like the idea of transfemme Benedick. Or he/him lesbian Benedick.
Beatrice (Much Ado About Nothing): The she/they to end all she/theys
Viola/Cesario (Twelfth Night): Could be trans in literally any direction. I made a post about this too at some point. My suggestion is all of the directions: they/she/he
Sebastian (Twelfth Night): He/him, transmasc. I also made a post about this at some point.
Feste (Twelfth Night): I saw a great she/her Feste last summer.
Orsino (Twelfth Night): Specifically the himbo variety of he/they
Margaret of Anjou (Henry VI trilogy and Richard III): If I ever play Margaret, I will use she/they pronouns.
Catesby (Richard III): Just played Catesby with she/her pronouns and it worked!
Richard II (Richard II): Tell me Richard isn’t the most they/he or he/they guy alive (or… dead).
Hal (1 Henry IV-Henry V): Saw Hal played with she/they pronouns last summer and it was great. Could also see he/they Hal. Very nonbinary vibe overall. I personally believe that going by Hal rather than Henry for two whole plays is their way of pulling the “going by the first letter of what my name used to be instead of picking a name from scratch” nonbinary trick. He probably pretends to be cis after his dad dies and he becomes king—one more element of Hal’s lifelong identity crisis.
Hotspur/Harry Percy Jr. (Richard II & 1 Henry IV): He/they in denial.
Kate Percy (1 & 2 Henry IV): She/they, not in denial. (Also Katespur should be bi4bi)
Ned Poins (1 & 2 Henry IV): Transmasc Ned Poins?? Maybe he doesn’t actually have a sister and Nell is just his deadname. Ned Poins’ failed scheme to flirt with Hal.
Romeo (Romeo & Juliet): he/they (t4t R&J!!!)
Juliet (Romeo & Juliet): she/they (t4t R&J!!!)
Mercutio (Romeo & Juliet): they/he(/it?). Vibes alone. Look at them. Just look.
Nurse (Romeo & Juliet): she/her, transfemme!
Cassius (Julius Caesar): Would love to see a they/them Cassius
Hamlet (Hamlet): he/they. I’ve made multiple posts about this theory and I still love it.
Ophelia (Hamlet): she/they. As she should.
Laertes (Hamlet): she/him and NOT just because Laertes used she/her pronouns the first time I saw this play.
Rosencrantz (Hamlet): he/they/she. Vibes. Sometimes goes by Ros/Rose. Probably genderfluid.
Malcolm (Macbeth): they/he or they/them. Also vibes.
Lady Macbeth (Macbeth): stolen straight from my last post because this is still my HC: she/they; would insult you for “having pronouns in your bio” and then turn around and punch you in the face for using their pronouns incorrectly.
Angus (Macbeth): she/her, transfemme. (t4t Ross/Angus. I will die on this hill… Dunsinane Hill.)
Ross (Macbeth): he/him, transmasc
Caithness (Macbeth): she/they lesbian
Mark Antony (Julius Caesar and Antony & Cleopatra): I would not bat an eye at he/they Mark Antony
Edmund (King Lear): they/he, nonbinary, sexiest man (/gn) alive.
Edgar (King Lear): he/him. Transmasc Edgar is slowly becoming canon To Me.
Cordelia (King Lear): she/her, transfemme.
Goneril (King Lear): she/they. I would let them kill me.
Coriolanus (Coriolanus): transmasc OR transfemme Coriolanus is!!!! The butterfly/metamorphosis motif! Name changes during canon! Discomfort with scars/body! Lack of autonomy granted by society! This is THE transgender play. (Other than Twelfth Night)
Imogen (Cymbeline): Tell me she doesn’t want to be a she/they so bad.
Florizel (The Winter’s Tale): he/they(/she?). Literally just a vibe. I have a pet rock named Florizel.
Perdita (The Winter’s Tale): she/they. I also have a pet rock named Perdita.
Ariel (The Tempest): Similar to Puck, probably they/she/he? Even my conservative English prof consistently rotates between she/her and he/him for Ariel (possibly not intentionally? I’m not convinced he knows what her canon pronouns are.)
Ferdinand (The Tempest): she/they. PLEASE give me transfemme Ferdinand. PLEASE let Miranda realize she’s a lesbian during canon.
Miranda (The Tempest): she/they. Ariel taught them about the existence of she/they pronouns and she immediately started using them.
So in other words… every Shakespeare character should be trans, actually.

Back to the Future: The Animated Series, s02ep013 "Verne Hatches an Egg"
✨Last episode of the series!✨
Previous episodes linked here.
In this episode: Verne gains a cute little buddy, creepy Mr. Wisdom returns, and a jarring final moment with Real Doc
Well, friends, we've reached the end of our journey into the world of the animated series. It was almost exactly one year ago today that I posted my review of the first episode, and it's been a super fun project to work on. I'm kind of sad to be done with it.
Let's see what this last episode has in store for us, shall we?
We start in the lab, where Doc is making adjustments to his latest invention, the "ELB Pediatric Policer."
Tumblr media
It's basically a lie detector designed to be worn by children, lol. When a child does something they know is wrong, or if they lie about something, it flashes with lights and blares a siren. He plans to present it at the Annual Convention of the Home Inventors of Mad Geniuses.
Gonna be real with you, Doc—not sure how I feel about this invention. Sounds like a good way to raise very anxious, paranoid children.
Anyway, this reminds Doc of something that happened to Verne when he was doing show and tell one day.
The cartoon begins with someone attempting the steal the DeLorean. They're shrouded in shadows, but it's pretty clear that it's Verne. He's got a pretty high track record for DeLorean thievery. Doc's security system catches him, though, locking him into the car, setting off an alarm, and taking a picture, which is sent directly to Doc's room.
Quick little sidenote, but I don't think I've mentioned that Doc regularly calls Clara "Clarabelle" over the course of the series. When he's woken up by the alarm system, it's the name he uses to call to her, and I was like, "huh. why have I never written about this in my posts?" I looked it up, and Clarabelle (the spelling according to the subtitles on the DVD) is a variant of the more official spelling, which is Claribel. It means "bright and beautiful" but seems to be a pretty obscure name, as it's only listed at .009% usage at the height of its popularity in 1893.
So, I'm left wondering: Is the animated series implying that it's perhaps her "real" name, with Clara being her nickname? Or is this just an affectionate nickname Doc uses for Clara? And if it's a nickname, is it something Doc simply thought had a nice ring to it, or is it because he's secretly a big fan of the Disney character Clarabelle Cow??

That's Clarabelle with her boyfriend Horace Horsecollar, btw. If you even care.
Verne tells Doc that he was only taking the DeLorean so he could go looking for something cool to bring to show and tell. Doc decides to help him out by letting him borrow an arrowhead he has. Verne is psyched, but before he can even reach the school building, Biff Jr. intercepts him and demands his lunch money. He steals the arrowhead from Verne.
Verne's teacher isn't happy that he had nothing to show or tell about, and she tells him that if he doesn't bring in something the next day, she's going to make him play Prince Charming in the upcoming school play. Which is a really weird threat if you ask me!! How does one force a child into a lead role of a play he doesn't want to be in just because he didn't have show and tell? What kind of school is this?
Verne is horrified by this news on account of he'd have to kiss some girl named Beatrice. He says he'd rather be, "dead like a dinosaur" which gives him a sudden idea. I sense a bad decision coming! And I bet Marty is going to be in on it because he always enables Varne in these types of shenanigans.

Yep. I knew it.
The boys take a quick trip to prehistoric times, where Verne swipes a dino egg for show and tell.
Shortly after arriving home, the egg hatches, and Verne finds himself caretaker to the world's cutest dinosaur.
Tumblr media
Look at that guy. (Verne faints when he sees it)
Within the hour, the dinosaur has already grown significantly, and it escapes outside to the yard, where Verne begs Jules to help in hiding him. Just then, they hear Doc approaching and quickly work to form a ridiculous story in which the dino is their friend who painted himself green because they're playing a game involving aliens.
Tumblr media
They're able to get away with it on account of Einstein is so afraid of the dinosaur that he launches himself at Doc's face and refuses to move.

Doc decides to take Einie to the vet, leaving his sons and their "friend" to continue their game. Jules insists Verne return the dino, but Verne wants to keep him as a pet. He names him Tiny.
It doesn't take long for Tiny to go missing in town. He ends up at the Tannen home, where Biff Jr. is watching Mr. Wisdom (who you may remember from an episode earlier in the season). If you don't, you just need to know that Mr. Wisdom is an evil children's TV show host who also happens to be one of Doc's old college roommates.
Mr. Wisdom announces that he's offering $50,000 to any viewer who can capture and send in an alien, bigfoot, or dinosaur. Very unfortunate timing, huh? Biff captures Tiny and sends him into the Mr. Wisdom show. After airing a special episode featuring Tiny, Mr. Wisdom plans to kill him and sell pieces of him to research labs for money.
Thankfully, Verne comes clean to his parents, and they work together to form a plan and sneak onto the set to free Tiny.

When Mr. Wisdom starts his show and reveals the "dinosaur," it's really just Marty and Jules on stilts.

Jules looks just like the monkey in that one meme.

The family gets home and prepares to bring Tiny back where he belongs. Before he goes, he spits out a baby tooth, which Verne is excited to be able to take to show and tell.
With that story wrapped up, we go back to Real Doc, who teaches us a little about eggs using a raw one. While he's talking, he takes out the lunch he'd packed, of which one of the items is a hard-boiled egg. Can you guess what happens? Yeah, he mixes up the two eggs. After some time to think about it, he feels pretty confident that he's figured out which one is the hard-boiled one and. And he just BITES into the egg, shell and all, like an absolute lunatic. And he's wrong about it being the hard-boiled one.
Tumblr media
Who does this? Who on EARTH eats a hard-boiled egg in this manner? Are you telling me that Doc regularly leaves the shells on his eggs and bites into them like an apple?? He eats the shells? Is that what I'm supposed to take away from this??
We're ending the animated series with the revelation that this is how our beloved scientist finds it acceptable to eat a hard-boiled egg?? What am I supposed to do with this now? How will I make peace with this information?
Join me next time for nothing. The animated series is over, folks. Doctor Emmett Brown eats eggshells.
Adiós.
