Thinking about my headcanons for Bookverse Widdershins and Olivia friendship:
Olivia sometimes takes Widdershins on fashion shopping trips. Widdershins listens intensely with little interruptions as Olivia talks about her favorite patterns and styles and what's "in".
Widdershins occasionally tells Olivia stories he heard in his former home of Cambodia. Olivia loves the story of Tum Teav, for it bears similarities to Romeo and Juliet, her favorite Shakespeare play.
Olivia accepts the food Widdershins makes if he made too much. It's usually fried rice and spring rolls, which she likes very much. Olivia will have a good hearty lunch or dinner on those days.
Widdershins enjoys Olivia's soda floats. She makes creative (maybe too creative) combinations, and he drinks them without hesitating. Widdershins enjoys her mango lemon soda float most.
Olivia letting Widdershins to assist her in her invention attempts. Her current attempt to make a machine that mimics lighting inside a room is something Widdershins is excited to see in action.
Widdershins teaching Olivia some VFD codes that she missed out on due to sick days. Olivia enjoys learning about the stained map code. She got lots of free coffee out of it.
Them dancing with one another in the private comfort of each other homes, despite their different taste in music. Their dancing is just them being goofy, smiling and laughing all the way.

me thinking about my headcanon that qwerty and mr. quagmire (raymond; q) are brothers:
what if q blames lemony for indirectly causing/being the first domino that lead to his brother's death in the last atwq book and q as result has 'bad blood' with lemony.
what if q, who doesn't have 'bad blood' with jacques and kit also can't help but 'blame' them also, seeing them as 'responsible' for not being there to reign their little brother in.
what if he holds the most 'blame' on jacques, for q can't fault kit being in jail; that is the fault of lemony with his decision to stay in stain'd-by-the-sea if he just left...
what if joan (the eventual mrs. quagmire) and her friendship with jacques has q's constantly doing his best to be civil and nice on the outside, but on the inside he's angry and hurt and wishes something 'bad' happens to jacques, and lemony will be finally able to feel the same way when q lost dashiell all those years ago.
what if q always instantly regrets thinking this, for he knows jacques doesn't deserve it...yet he in a symbolic way he does deserve it.

"Volunteer Fire Department," Violet repeated, and looked at her brother. "What does that mean?"
"In some communities," Klaus said, "there's no official fire department, and so they rely on volunteers to extinguish fires."
"I know that," Violet said, "but what does that have to do with our parents, or Count Olaf, or anything that has happened to us? I always thought that knowing what the letters stood for would solve the mystery, but I'm as mystified as I ever was."
"Do you think our parents were secretly fighting fires?" Klaus asked.
"But why would they keep it a secret?" Violet asked.
[...]
"Something happened," Quigley said. "Something that changed everything." He flipped through a few pages of his commonplace book until he found what he was looking for. "Jacques Snicket called it a 'schism,'' he said, "but I don't know what that word means."
"A schism," Klaus said, "is a division of a previously united group of people into two or more oppositional parties. It's like a big argument, with everybody choosing sides."
"That makes sense," Quigley said. "The way Jacques talked, it sounded like the entire organization was in chaos. Volunteers who were once working together are now enemies. Places that were once safe are now dangerous. Both sides are using the same codes, and the same disguises. Even the V.F.D. insignia used to represent the noble ideals everyone shared, but now it's all gone up in smoke."
The Slippery Slope, Chapter Eight, pages 166-168
Every so often I go back to reading whoslaurapalmer's post about VFD being known to the public, and I think to myself, "...oh! That is weird for an apparent secret organization is rather known by the public! Weirder since Klaus and Violet knows about them too!" But the more I thought about the passage in TSS, I think there is a reason why VFD is known to the public, even to Violet and Klaus.
Because the public already know about volunteer fire departments. As in, of individual volunteer fire departments in a town or village or unincorporated area with a heavy population that have no official fire department themselves, or do have a official fire department but it's so poor in resources and funding and fire-fighters, citizens willingly help out however they can in some way or form.
You know how Prosper Lost willingly driving the Talkie Brothers to Stain'd Secondary when it was set on fire in ATWQ 3? Prosper Lost isn't a Volunteer, but he is a volunteer. Lemony having to ask him if there's a volunteer fire department is him actually asking of his Volunteer Fire Department; the VFD that Lemony is a part of.
Prosper responded as if Lemony was asking about an individual volunteer fire department; as in if there's a group of citizens that help the official fire department.
And I think the fact individual volunteer fire departments exist in the world of ASOUE/ATWQ is what cause the VFD schism: it was a schism about themselves, on their identity.
VFD, the Volunteer Fire Department, started as many independent department. When putting their resources and knowledge and numbers together slowly over time, they realize they can become more than even official fire departments. They can be all over the world with branches keeping the world safe from fires, and in their word, quiet. Their logo being VFD inside a hidden eye reflects this. They are watching as One, waiting to help from the shadows.
VFD, the Volunteer Fire Department, over the many, many years in operation, absorbed the small independent volunteer departments. Slowly over times, criticism about absorbing independent fire departments came to be. Criticism soon transform into arguments.
And one day, something broke the camel's back that created two sides with different ideologies within the Volunteer Fire Department.
One side that thinks the Volunteer Fire Department should remain one collective group with branches all over the world with shared knowledge and resources, operating together as a uniform force keep the whole world quiet.
The other side thinks the Volunteer Fire Department should be change into being allied departments that share knowledge and resources, but remain independent in their designated location, their own 'world', like how actual volunteer fire departments operate.
By ASOUE proper, the ideologies changed to where they're almost forgotten except for a few select people. But elements are there in each group, just twisted to fit the time.

random but do you have any headcanons/theories about gifford and ghede?
I don't mind the randomness, anon! I like getting asks!
Gifford and Ghede are some of the characters in the series (ASOUE and ATWQ combine) I don't think much of. To me, because they were introduced as a duo, I see them as a 'two-in-one' deal of a character. So the headcanons I have of them is...short. Really short:
Almost never seen without one another in public. You think Gifford is alone eating lunch on a bench? Surprise! Ghede shows up with her lunch to join him. You certain Ghede is watching television by herself? Nope! Gifford jumps over the sofa to sit beside her.
Gifford takes very good care of his mustache (thanks ATWQ illustrations), and keeps a spare mustache comb on hand.
Ghede loves the hear the drama going on among associates. She's a nosy sorts; if it's drama about her least associates, she shares it.
Unknown to the organization, Gifford and Ghede know they're thought of as the worst volunteers of their generation, but they really do try their damn best to be volunteers of the organization.
I don't have any theories about them, honestly. I don't vibe with the theory that they're possibly TMWBBNH and TWWHBNB, even though I get the logic behind. Really I think Ghede and Gifford by ASOUE are in a nice little 'retirement' together because if they're to be lazying around with someone, they do it with their partner of many years (romantically? platonically? I haven't decide yet).
Thank you so much for the ask, anon! Do drop in whenever you feel like it!

All Alone
IMPORTANT NOTES: There is implied racism and implied period-typical racism (late 1970s/1980s period because I headcanon so), mainly in the second half of the fic.
[Know that if eternity dies out]
It’s not every day Rina can spend a day with her Uncle Ryutaro. More often than not, he’s always flying back and forth between Winnipeg and Vancouver for work. But whenever there’s a day he can stay around, they always have a great time together.
It’s too bad Grand-Mère’s goonies have to follow them though.
Rina isn’t sure why Grand-Mère’s goonies watch over them, hawking around in the distance. Uncle Ryutaro was family before he married Duchess Sabine. Uncle Ryutaro was family before Duchess Sabine became Mother; aunt is the proper term for her and Rina’s relationship, but she insisted to be call Mother, for it would be Rina who will inherit the Duchy of Winnipeg.
She should ask Grand-Mère about it one day. Or Mother. Or Uncle Ryutaro himself. But today is not that day. Today, Rina will have fun with Uncle Ryutaro. And today’s a special day. They’re in the City (by the Bay), visiting Mother. Mother is still sadly attending a meeting with the Count. So, for the time being, it’s just her and Uncle Ryutaro, spending the afternoon together.
Again, it’s too bad Grand-Mère’s goonies have to follow them. Rina wouldn’t have even known they existed if it wasn’t for Uncle Ryutaro pointing them out to her one day. He always calls them kurokos; the ‘invisible’ stagehands clad in black. Only they’re not, at least not to Rina.
“Uncle Ryutaro! Look!” Rina quickly takes her uncle’s hand, and drags him to the inaccurate distant solar system model, inside the Milky Way Galaxy exhibit. Rina can hear the necklace Uncle Ryutaro wears jingling around.
Going to the Titania Space and Science Center is what Rina can call a special treat. Back home, Rina loves looking at the constellations and planets through her telescope. Grand-Mère is constantly telling her that she’s wasting the night away with an impractical hobby, but Uncle Ryutaro and Mother says she’s simply traveling the galaxy in a pure safe matter.
Rina drags Uncle Ryutaro until they reach the end of the solar system, where an inaccurate size model of planet Pluto stands. The model is reddish brown, and there’s a unique feature that she never saw in other solar system models back home: it has a small heart shape region.
Rina briefly looks up at her uncle, and stares at his necklace. His necklace is like any normal necklace with metal beads. But what stands out most to Rina is that it has a key. It’s a silver key that has a heart shape bow and wing shape shoulders. Rina looks back at the model, and sighs dreamily, holding her hands together with a smile. “Aww. Pluto has a heart, just like your key! It would be cool if Pluto does have a heart shape region on her surface.”
Uncle Ryutaro crouches down slightly, so the two of them are on the same eye level. He then clutches the key. “That would be something. Of course, we’ll only known for certain when we can finally reach Pluto. Be it a space probe or an actual human being in exploration. Until then, Pluto will be out there, waiting for us to visit her at long last.”
Rina’s soon frowns, and drops her hands to her sides. “That means she’ll be waiting for years. For years and years, she’ll be all alone, and unable to share her heart with all of us.”
Uncle Ryutaro grabs ahold of her hands, and he speaks softly. “It’s possible, Rina. Pluto has Charon as her companion, but sometimes, a companion can still make one feel as if they’re by themselves. There are always circumstances that one feels utterly all alone.”
Rina opens her mouth to ask how it’s possible, but Uncle Ryutaro glances sideways, and stands up. His eyes are fuel with anger, and his brow is all scrunch up. Rina turns her head towards where her uncle is looking. There’s a janitor pushing his cleaning cart, a teenager jamming to music on his Walkman, a small group of preschoolers with their teacher, and two goonies in black and dark sunglasses quickly focusing their attention to the asteroid models.
“Those kurokos are really starting to get bolder with each outing,” says Uncle Ryutaro. As he leads Rina away with his right hand, he rubs the key with his left hand. He speaks softly, talking more to himself than to Rina. “Can’t I have an outing with my da-darling niece? It would certainly be pleasant if they get suddenly distracted. Long enough for us to make an escape from them.”
CRASH!
Rina quickly looks back to see the jamming teenager inside the janitor’s cleaning cart, his legs sticking out from the bin. As the janitor tries to get the teenager out, the goonies in black are on the floor. The small group of preschoolers are running around them in circles, with the poor teacher trying regain control over them.
Rina turns back to Uncle Ryutaro, and stares at him in awe. The key has magical powers!
[I’ll keep standing here, all alone]
Even though her lecture was done, R decides to stay around at the Orion Observatory. Being open to public as an observatory and renovated space museum, R wants to be there as a simple visitor, and not a public known lecturer. It’s a good thing R always keeps a simple disguise kit on hand: sunglasses that block the majority of her face, and a giant brim sunhat.
It's not the Titania Space and Science Center, but the Orion Observatory has its own perks. It’s new, it has the latest information approved by both the Meteorological and Astronomical Societies, and best of all, it wasn’t burn down in a fire that now reduced it to a pile of ashes. Why bring it up? For that what sadly happened to the Titania Space and Science Center.
R walks over to Milky Way Galaxy exhibit, making her way to the end of the solar system model display, her key ring jingling on the belt of her skirt as she moves. From her observations, it seems that the only person at the exhibit is herself. That’s good; it makes the chances of getting recognize drop down tremendously; from slim picking to zero.
R leans down slightly to look at the information plaque card. She makes a small ‘tch’ and frowns as she reads it: Understand that despite Pluto’s model being on display, we do not consider it a planet; we are incapable of removing the model without removing the rest. We hope you enjoy the rest of your visit and time at the Orion Observatory.
“At least wait for an official statement for Pluto’s planetary status,” mutters R, as she ‘tch’ again. “This is certainly a terrible offense I can’t forgive.”
Why! My dear Rina! The sudden nagging voice sounds remarkably identical to Grand-Mère. R takes a sharp breath in. I didn’t think an adult like yourself still considers Pluto as a planet.
I only said they should wait for an official statement, replies back R to the nagging voice. With the debate still ongoing, it’s best for to wait on the conditions that makes a classification of a planet. Great. To think R is having an argument with herself that takes after Grand-Mère.
When Mother died way back when, due to R’s young age, it was Grand-Mère who helped R into her new role as Duchess of Winnipeg. She was R’s instructor, the self-proclaim protector to the Heir Apparent until the time came. She was everything R needed, but not what R wanted.
True. But what if it’s decided Pluto shouldn’t be classified as a planet, hmm? What then, dear Rina? ‘Grand-Mère’ is truly out to rile her up, huh?
Then I’ll accept Pluto is no longer a planet, and whatever new classification bestow on her. R soon guides her hand to her key ring, and plays with one key in particular. It’s a silver key that has a heart shape bow, and wing shape shoulders.
You’ll accept it? What a contradict! You haven’t even acceptance the truth about your upbringing, Rina. You’re still honoring Ryutaro and his cigar box of secrets. Ryutaro is a damn bastard! If he just left your mother as I asked, you would gotten a true well-adjusted upbringing. You would have been the fortunate adopted foreigner child of not one, but two blue bloods!
Even as a nagging voice in the deepest part of R’s subconscious, ‘Grand-Mère’ crossed the line. R grips tightly onto to the silver key. The broken-off engagement with the Baron of Arizona is something Grand-Mère never forgave Mother for. Oh, she said she did, but Mother refused to be in the same room with her for more than twenty minutes. For hers and Ryutaro’s sake.
Ryutato…how he truly wanted things to be different for them all. For R. R closes her eyes, and she instantly sees Ryutaro on his bed, pale and weak, saying words that has R’s head spinning. To think he was willing to make another sacrifice for her future as Duchess of Winnipeg.
For your information, I have accepted the truth. I accepted it when Ryutaro told me I could hate him. He told me I could hate him like how much you hated him, for getting in the way of Mother and mine’s so-call perfect life, but I of didn’t. And you know why? Because who forced Mother keep her engagement with that Baron before creating the piss-poor ultimatum? Who forced Ryutaro to remain in my life, but never granting him the honor of being who he truly is to me?
‘Grand-Mère’ doesn’t reply back.
“Finally! I thought she would never leave.” R soon exhales slowly, and opens her eyes. She can still feel her tight grip of the silver key in her hand. R looks down at the key, and thinks of a fond memory from long ago.
She thinks how one cannot help but love someone. How one cannot help but also suffer for love. She thinks how if one can’t go admit the truth, you’ll keep standing there, all alone.
R slowly release her grip of the silver key, and stares back at the model of Pluto.

❤ Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom, and 🤍Which character is not as morally bad as everyone else seems to think for ASOUE, please
❤️: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?
Honestly, I have no idea. I've never encountered any particularly terrible mischaracterization in this fandom. It's not a very big fandom to begin with, and I only really interact with certain parts of it; that might be why. The only egregious mischaracterization I've encountered was coming from the Netflix writers :D Particularly in case of Kit.
🤍: Which character is not as morally bad as everyone else seems to think?
Not a character, but I think we as a fandom tend to exaggerate how terrible VFD is - or rather, make it even more terrible than it is, and in more straightforward and, I don't know, stereotypical ways? And I'm not judging anyone, I'm also guilty of that, because that often makes for a good story. I've written fics in which that happens because it was necessary for the plot and/or added to the atmosphere I was trying to create. Like, to provide a clear example, I've written a fic in which, after Charles is recruited as an associate - but not really a full-fledged member - of VFD, his father dies in a suspicious fire, it being heavily implied that it was set by VFD to make sure he can't go back to his past life. Make no mistake, I am not saying that VFD is good and innocent, but canonically it is perhaps less of an evil organization from hell a crime thriller than it often is in fanwork.

hector never held fernald as fully responsible for the anwhistle aquatic fire + gregor's death. hector understands that as a child (teenager by fernald's insistence), fernald was manipulated into being an accomplice of being the way into anwhistle aquatic, and his role got out of control very quickly due to the failures of the adults (his stepfather, his mother) who were suppose to keep fernald out of it.
but the fact remains by the present itself, fernald is not the kid who was manipulated into being an accessory to crime. fernald is a former criminal feared due to his sharp hooks who took pride in his 'work', like kidnapping and murder and arson. fernald willingly ruined and made lives miserable. lives like the baudelaires and the quagmires.
while fernald is now retired from being a criminal, wanting to start anew with his sister (and stepfather, but that's a touchy thing fernald denies due to the complications of their relationship) by double-crossing the firestarters and olaf...
it doesn't forgive fernald's past crimes. his crimes aren't forgotten, nor forgiven, and the quagmires make that very clear, especially duncan and isadora. the three 'accepted' that while fernald is their travel companion (as well as his sister and his stepfather), they are also under no obligation to be polite and civil to him. they don't even call fernald by his name; just the name they know him by.
the quagmires are all passive-aggressive to fernald; quigley is more passive than aggressive, being 'cold' and willing to ignore fernald, but does attempt small talk when fiona and widdershins are around. duncan and isadora are more aggressive than passive; they glare at him at random, tells fernald to shut up if he's trying to take part in a conversation with any of them, as well as occasionally poking him up with sticks they found (which is an improvement compare to beating him up with sticks).
hector knows he should get the quagmires, especially duncan and isadora, to stop. to prevent an escalation that would likely have fiona and widdershins upset and angry and worry for fernald. to keep the tensions of the group at low as possible, hector needs to get the quagmires to tame their rightful dislike for fernald.
but hector knows that he can't. if hector tries hard enough, he can recall the boy that watches hector and widdershins (even before the man was fernald's stepfather) and others in their activities, making comments that occasionally get on their nerves or a laugh. hector can recall the boy who would curse and look embarrass, before getting told he's free to curse as long as his mother or little kids aren't present. hector can faintly recall fond memories of fernald the boy.
and that's why hector can't stop the quagmires. hector can only recall, and not even completely. fernald the boy is a distant memory to hector. fernald the boy in a way, no longer exist.
the fernald who hector knows now is just the hook-handed man.

r’s back is leaning against a slanted pillow on bed, her long legs stretched out, one foot placed on top of the other, and she yawns lazily as beatrice walks into the room.
well, “walk” is an inaccurate term. she practically skips, r thinks.
“bea,” she greets. “it went well, i presume?
“marvelous,” beatrice beams. “i got the role!”
r finds herself smiling. “congratulations,” she says. “how did esme take it?”
beatrice blinks, innocently, “i wouldn’t know,” she says, but there’s a hint of smugness underneath the innocent look. “i haven’t got the time to pay attention to irrelevant actresses, after all.”
translation: esme did not take it well and that greatly pleases beatrice. it’s petty of her, probably, but beatrice did win fair and square, so r thinks she’s entitled to a little pettiness. plus, if anyone could pull pettiness off with such charm, then it’s beatrice. no one really does it like her.
r rolls her eyes fondly. “is that so?” she remarks lightly.
“absolutely,” beatrice nods, winking at her. “now, come have lunch with me!”
