i don’t know which autistic/adhd/any kind of neurodivergent person needs to hear this but: make a “just in case” bag
this is a pic of mine. it contains:
loop earplugs on the zipper
prescription glasses with a clip on sunglasses attachment
my public transport discount card
a pen
a glasses cloth + wet glasses wipes (which can also be used to clean my hands if needed!
wireless earbuds in case my headphones give out
tips for my apple pencil + silicon covers if i need a different texture/the sound is too loud
a sanitary pad (not for me, as i had a hysterectomy, but i like carrying one around for my menstruating friends)
a pouch with hair ties for when my hair bothers me
autism lanyard (not pictured, as i put it in after i took it)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
will i use these every day? not necessarily. but it’s good to have these all in one place in a little pouch so it’s easy to throw into my bag as i use different ones for different occasions. that way i don’t have to think about all these things individually.
it might seem like common sense for some people, but i didn’t think of this until recently. so i wanted to share this in case it could be handy for other people. some more ideas for what to put in your bag under the break. you can make this as big or as small as you like so some ideas may seem a bit big
powerbank + cables (preferably a powerbank that has a LOT of charge)
snacks (do keep an eye on the expiration date)
painkillers/emergency meds (same thing about the expiration date)
sewing kit
deodorant/perfume
mini fan
hand warmers
scissors/nail clippers (for when tags/threads/your nails are bothering you)
tweezers
lucky charm (i have my lucky cat keychain. it just calms me to have)
plushie/stress ball/fidget toy
mints/a mini toothbrush and toothpaste
extra pair of underwear (for if you suddenly need to stay somewhere overnight or if an accident happens)
comb
band-aids + disinfectant
hand cream/soothing cream
soap/soap leaves
similarly, some mini shampoo or mini body wash (again for if you suddenly need to stay the night. there’s probably already some wherever you’re staying but again. this is a just in case bag)
q-tips
chapstick
makeup remover wipes
razors
hand sanitizer/general sanitizer
wet wipes/tissues
foldable bag
ruler/tape measure
this is a lot but keep in mind, these are just ideas. you don’t have to use everything, just pick out which things you think would be handy for you and make your bag accordingly. do feel free to add onto the list if you have any other ideas.

Calling myself out
(Image description: stick figure sitting on the ground with an arrow pointing down at it from a text box that says, "doesn't know how to ask for things in a way that neurotypicals won't see as demanding or annoyingly apologetic", referring to the stick figure. End of description.)

"Disorder" and "Disability" are NOT dirty words!!
A frustrated rant
I saw a video today and I can't get it out of my head, so I'll write about it instead. Excuse me and apologies if this sounds incoherent or if anything is incorrect.
The video was of a mom telling her followers about why she wouldn't tell her daughter that she has ASD (her daughter has autism) because she's "not disordered". It's frustrating to constantly hear this going around because it's false. If your daily functioning is not being disordered because of your traits/symptoms, you don't have autism. Autism is a disability, not a "superpower" like people in the comments were saying. I WISH that my autism didn't disable and disorder me, and that I "didn't know I was different", but that's what autism does. Yes, autism is a spectrum, but even Level 1 autistics are disabled because they have autism.
"Disorder" and "disability" are not dirty words, and by pushing the narrative that we should find a different name for the diagnosis, we are contributing to the stigma that disabled people get. Having a disorder doesn't mean you're fucked for life, it just means you have trouble functioning in a world that isn't accommodating for you, and that's not your fault or any disabled persons fault.
These "autism moms" also want to start replacing the diagnosis "Autism Spectrum Disorder" with "Autism Spectrum Condition". As an autistic person, the word "condition" sounds so much more demeaning and degrading than "disorder".
Autism is a Neurodevelopmental disability and disorder. AND there's nothing wrong with having autism. Both statements can be true at the same time. Being autistic isn't something to feel ashamed about, neither is being disabled or having another disorder.
I might be grasping straws here, but claiming that autism isn’t a disorder because your child “isn’t disordered” is excluding and silencing the hundreds of thousands of autistics who ARE disabled and disordered (like myself). It’s tone deaf, and seems to come from a place of privilege that might not be recognized in some situations.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but trying to change an entire diagnosis because you “dont agree with the wording” is counterproductive. ASD is autism, no matter how you put it. You don’t have to use “ASD” to refer to yourself, but don’t act as if the words disabled, disorder, and ASD are malignant.
Words have meaning, and ASD was called a disorder for a reason. This "ASC, non-disordered autism, autism is a superpower, autism mom" movement feels like it is pushing the autistic community back, and its frustrating to see.

question for physically disabled or chronically ill people with mobility aids or with no mobility aids
tldr: can i use a mobility aid as an abled autistic person who experiences fatigue, balance/stability issues, sways more than normal when standing, and get more than occasional slight body aches? (feel like i have to explain myself)
Im abled but i feel like i could benefit from mobility aids but it feels like i’m invading or something
i’m autistic and sometimes struggle with standing, i sway sometimes (i think more than the average person does), and i struggled with balance and coordination sometimes. I also struggle with fatigue. i find myself not going out because i’m just too tired to walk the whole time or stay standing. my legs get tired easy, i get tired easy. i stay in the house or in the car majority of the time.
my body also feels uncomfortable, like sort of achy, but i feel like i’m being dramatic about that and everyone feels that way. it’s probably just like when you tell a kid a bandaid fixes the pain and they believe it. idk the word. it starts with a p i think. it’s probably just my bra or like the way i eat. whatever, my point is i don’t feel good a lot, even if i don’t feel sick, i feel achy.
i want to use a mobility aid but i feel like i’m invading if that makes sense. i feel like i don’t really need it, i know i don’t need it, but i think it would really help. but i can’t really afford to see a doctor about it either.
i want to know what the physically disabled community thinks because i feel i need permission to use one.
i feel sorta like a faker or imposter.
i’m sorry if this is offensive to ask

Things I say to my loud family when I'm overstimulated:
Use your inside voices, please.
Can we make this an inner monologue?
Let's play the quiet game.
I am not a vampire, its ✨️ambient lighting✨️
Please stop talking to me.
I'm putting my headphones on.
Now is not a good time, please try again later.

People against self-dxing can suck it
Me: I don't have an official diagnosis but I know I'm autistic.
Anti-self dxers: You can't say you're autistic if you haven't got an official diagnosis! You don't know anything about autism if you don't have a degree!
Me: I'm saying this based on extensive research for a project in my librarianship Master's course on how to conduct medical research for doctors (which I got a 96% on).
Tumblr media
Anti-self dxers: Being a librarian doesn't make you qualified!
Me: I'm trained to do searches in the medical field on behalf of doctors. And I know myself better than anyone else.
Anti-self dxers: You can't know yourself better than a trained professional can!
Me: *goes to a trained professional*
Trained Professional: Before we begin, do you think you're autistic? You're the expert when it comes to you.
Me: Yes, I think I'm pretty damn autistic.
Trained Professional: *has me do a bunch of tests and interviews me*
Me: So? What's the verdict?
Trained Professional: You're right. You're really freaking autistic.

Learning how to tie at least three or four different utility knots is not only the kind of basic, vital knowledge everyone should take upon themselves to learn and practice, but practicing those knots after learning them is also a great low-tech method of relieving understimulation in those with autism and/or ADHD in situations where screens aren't preferred or possible. Nylon paracord is cheap and YouTube will patiently teach you every step.

Question for the ADHD'ers (and other neurodiverse people)
What are yall eating patterns like?
Mine mostly goes:
•Big breakfast 🧀🍳🥚🥛☕️🍯
•Small lunch (barely a lunch more like a snack)🫒
•Massive dinner (1000+ calories unironically)🧀🍖🍗🥩🥓🍔🌯🌮
•Post-dinner shenanigans (cappuccino or fruit)🍓🍎☕️
Tumblr media
Do yall eat like this as well? Do you struggle with remembering to eat? Lmk cuz people find me delulu for basically eating nothing for 8 hours straight and then eating a meal the equivalent of a bomb after☆
