THERE ARE NO RULES

Arbitrary.

Aside from the fact that it’s a fun-sounding word, it puts the very thing I despise into a single word, or almost. I don’t necessarily hate everything arbitrary, but I do hate when arbitrary things hold people back.

Especially arbitrary rules.

Arbitrary rules make my blood boil.

They hold people back from pursuing their dreams, from making their lives easier, and they’re just plain dumb.

Don’t think this means I hate all rules. They’re great when they’re based on reason and make the world a better place.

Don’t run with scissors, understandable.

Sneeze into a tissue or your elbow, of course.

Use a question mark at the end of a question; we don’t want any miscommunications happening now, do we?

But, “I can’t start a website yet”, “I can’t just go up and talk to them”, “You have to do things the way they’ve always been done”, “You have to post content consistently”, or “You have to have a niche”, are all fake rules made up to limit your own mind.

I’m not immune to arbitrary rules, although I have been working nineteen diligent years to avoid them by being the annoying kid that asks “Why?” whenever I’m told to do something.

I think karma tried to get back at me by giving me a little brother that also does this, but it backfired because now we just figure out the why’s together.

I pester all my friends and family to challenge the made-up rules holding them back whenever I catch them in the act.

But it’s harder to catch yourself.

Whenever I do, I want to yell at the world,“THERE ARE NO RULES!!”, under my breath,“arbitrary ones, that is”.

Instead, I quickly set out to do exactly what the arbitrary rule told me not to do or rebel against what it told me to do.

Arbitrary Rules, Tim Drake and #1

1. write something using words only one syllable long.

Good things come to those who wait, or so Tim’s been told. So he waits and he waits and he waits, but the good things have yet to come.

Mom and Dad say they’ll be home soon. They say just a few days more, they say it’s good, that Tim learn not to need all his good things all at once. They say boys his age just think of their own wants, rich boys most of all. But Tim waits, he’s good at it. He does not ask for more than they can give. He waits.

Good things come. Tim’s house is full of good things. There is food and drink and warmth. His mom and dad do come home in the end. They stay for a brief snatch of time, eyes bright with the things they’ve seen far from here. Tim asks what they did and saw in short, small ways, with care not to be too much, not to ask too much of them. They turn to look at him, a brief glance here and there, speak with words he looks up on his own, and turn back to their own thoughts and dreams. Their time in Tim’s house is a rush, and in a rush they find a new site and they are gone. His mom and dad come home and are gone again. It is a small good, but it is the good that Tim can hold. Tim waits.

So, this happened.

Scheduling a checkup with my doctor and after picking a date the lady says “Now you need an appointment for a Covid swab two days before your appointment. You know the rules.”

Nope, I don’t know that rule. News to me. Didn’t need this for the last appointment during the peak of Covid. I ask if I can use the Covid home test sent by the government. No. I ask if I can go to their nearest urgent care within their healthcare system for the swab, which would save me time, gas, hassle etc. Well, she would have to send over a ‘special order’... [uncomfortable silence]

It’s so fucked up. There’s no operational system. There’s the billing system.

ok, this one’s been percolating in my mind for a while. i’ve heard people say you need to work up to involving a dynamic or kinks in a sexual relationship and i disagree. maybe if you’re talking about, like, intense cnc or sadism, but as for d/s and lighter stuff, i don’t see why two adults can’t negotiate that the first time they have sex. i have, in fact some of my best experiences were first times with new people. “but someone could push you to do something you’re not comfortable with” that can happen with vanilla sex and it can happen the twentieth time, not just the first. “it could be a problem if one person has significantly more experience with bdsm” it could be a problem if one person has significantly more experience with sex. i’m not saying there aren’t risks, i’m saying they’re not specific to introducing a dynamic with a new/casual partner (actually they’re not even specific to sex, but y’all wouldn’t relish an aromantic’s opinion about romantic consent). tbh it just sounds like some of you aren’t very good at communicating or being aware of boundaries. i actually feel like it’s a sort of ‘hoisted by your own petard’ thing where like, you’re saying a dynamic requires especial attention to that, so then if you’re speaking from experience shouldn’t you (that is to say, people in “the community”) be especially good at it? if you personally don’t want to introduce a dynamic with new/casual partners that’s fine! but some of us do and are capable of doing so, and having vanilla sex at first against our mutual wishes wouldn’t serve any purpose.

i think it’s less that ppl are legit expecting a white christmas in boston every year and more that the probability for one used to be 20 to 30% and it’s now been almost 15 years without one and probability has dropped to 10% and will continue to drop. for someplace like worcester in massachusetts it’s even worse — probability was 67% ish for the boomers and now it’s a little over 30%. only 27 white christmases in boston since 1892 sounds small but when u consider most bostonians had 3 white christmases by their mid-teens on top of all the christmases where there was snow even if it wasn’t one inch and now there are teenagers who haven’t seen even one white christmas… it makes sense why ppl freak out every year it still hasn’t happened.

And that absolutely makes sense, yeah! I have immense climate anxiety too, like I said!

What I was responding to was more the people saying "it's 60 and raining in Boston and it feels like the apocalypse" or "this isn't how it's supposed to be ever; this never used to happen."

I don't know if you saw my longer post, but I went and looked at Boston weather records going back to 1893. Most Decembers from 1893-1903 had multiple days in the upper 50s, with many years getting into the 60s at least once. I didn't track every single year from 1893 to the present, but it seems reasonable to assume that that 10-year period wasn't just a weird fluke. December 1895 actually had more days in the 60s (5) than December 2022 (1).

That's not the full story, of course- December 1895 also had a couple of days in the 20s before that upswing, some with small amounts of snow. You also have things like overnight lows going haywire, and other reminders that climate change is real and it is happening now. I would never, ever attempt to deny that. It's the single biggest problem facing humanity at the moment.

However. There are multiple things to hold in our minds at the same time when thinking about its day-to-day effect on our lives, and one of them is "the effects are seldom as simple as It's Warmer Every Day Now Than It Ever Has Been, And That Will Continue Unilaterally For The Rest Of Our Lives." I'm not trying to deny or negate anything. I'm just trying to make people feel a little less despondent.

(I also just discovered that the metric for a white Christmas here in Boson states that it has to fall before 7 AM, which seems arbitrary and weird. We actually had a white Christmas here in 2017- we got 2.9" of snow -it just fell later in the day. So...it doesn't count for some reason? That's really strange to me. Anyway, the article where I learned this estimates our average yearly "one inch of snow on the ground at 7 AM on Christmas morning" chances nowadays at 19% as of three days ago.)

(I also think this demonstrates what I'm calling Reverse Environmental Amnesia- where, rather than thinking that the effects of climate change have always been normal, you tend to remember past weather in a way that fits the absolute direst interpretation of circumstances. Anyone who was in Boston on Christmas 2017 SHOULD remember the snowstorm...but I've seen multiple locals who don't travel for the holidays agreeing that we've had no Christmas snow at all since 2009.)
