At some point during korg's fanon narrating i highly expected thor to interrupt and say "none of that happened ur flanderizing it" and then we go back to the real plot and dont hear from korg narrating again
I wish I was the sort of person who could completely rewrite the movie as a fanfic, keeping to the storyline but writing it in a more believable way, as it's happening in the moment, not as an amusing story that happened in the past. I would like, for instance, to see the moment or series of moments that made Thor decide he wanted to get in shape again, and see him struggling at first, but slowly rebuilding his strength and stamina. A lot less talking to Stormbreaker like it's a person who can understand him; a little bit of that sort of thing can be funny, the amount in the movie just made him seem pathetic. No non-stop screaming goats; again it's overdone. WHY are they always screaming? Have it be only an occasional thing, with a reason for it, for example. (Someone mentions the possibility of cooking one for dinner, maybe...) Maybe they're just a nervous wreck at first because of who they used to live with, and they settle down and become useful members of the team. Let them have a hero moment when they take a bite out of Gorr's ass or something! Ideally? I'd like New Asgard to have a healer with magic enough to put Jane's cancer into remission, but if she has to die, then you can be darn sure I'd have Heimdall escorting her into Valhalla, right up to the high table where Frigga and Odin and Loki are sitting together. And Frigga stands, and welcomes Jane home. (Hmm, surely someone has written an extended version of Jane arriving in Valhalla at least? I must look that up.)

LET'S TALK ABOUT LOKI'S SHOES (ACTUALLY, HIS WHOLE WARDROBE)
Tumblr media
Production costs aside, clothes tell the audience about how characters think of themselves.
Loki's shoes in the S2 finale raised a lot eyebrows, but I find them quite fitting: they are comfortable, practical, and most importantly, they are humble. The camera brings this to our attention to communicate his evolution in character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Loki has always dressed well, often times ostentatiously. Whether he is at war, passing as a Midgardian, or held captive as an Asgardian prisoner, Loki communicates his social class and sense of superiority through clothing. For him, clothing armors his fragile sense of self and against others' opinions of him. He intends to be perceived as deadly charming but ultimately unapproachable.
Tumblr media
His attire in the first Thor movie is roughly equal parts green and gold, signifying his royal status. His style is dressed down for his brother's misadventures in Jotenheim, yet overall both silhouettes are lofty, princely, but not hardened or threatening.
Tumblr media
In Avengers, Loki's look has more black and leather, with exaggerated emphasis on his shoulders meant to intimidate as he assumes the role of villain. The silhouette is very hard, heavy, and edgy. Gold detailing is prevalent as well. Combined with the goat's helm, this is Loki's most pretentious outfit, which speaks to an undercurrent of low self-esteem and a compulsive need to impress. There's no mistaking he is the main antagonist of the story.
Tumblr media
In Thor 2, Loki's attire is similar to Avengers but the overcoat is exchanged for a less bulky version (perhaps conveying he is less guarded now that the effects of the Mind Stone are no longer influencing him). Loki's role likewise pivots from the harsh lines of a villain to the more flexible edges of a reluctant villain-turned-ally. This aligns with his character arc when he protects both Jane and Thor, seemingly sacrificing himself.
Tumblr media
In Thor 3, Loki's silhouette is streamlined even further. The overcoat is done away with in favor of what appears to be a leather doublet, pauldrons, and vambraces. Gold accents are minimal. While stylish, Loki's attire is more practical than showy, and his helm serves the dual purpose of protection as well as weaponry. At this point in his arc, Loki has become a full antihero, joining his brother's side in rescuing as many Asgardians as possible, and eventually dying in a vain bid to protect Thor from Thanos.
Tumblr media
The TVA does something very fun and interesting in taking away Loki's ability to dress himself. Since Loki cannot use his magic in the TVA, he is forced to wear the same clothing as his captor/advocate, who eventually becomes his best friend and peer.
Tumblr media
Perhaps, on a subconscious level, this helped Loki to feel included. We know by his pwn admission that Loki fears being alone and desperately craves a sense of belonging. At the same time, he intentionally dresses to put people at a distance, thereby protecting himself from potential rejection at the cost of isolating himself further.
When Mobius gives him that TVA jacket for the first time, Loki seems uncharacteristically pleased. It is not an attractive jacket by any means, yet he neither scoffs at it nor refuses to wear it. Instead, Loki puts it on and is content when Mobius says it looks "smart" on him. He continues to dress like Mobius and, indeed, mimic some of his mannerisms such as placing his hands on his hips. Without clothing meant to push people away, Loki opens up, has more fun, and makes friends.
Tumblr media
Loki's choice of attire as he assumes the mantle of God of Stories (and time) is fascinating. Setting aside the clear design inspiration from the comics, Loki's silhouette is soft, remarkably so. His colors are earthy hues of green, and the only bit of flare are the light gold trimming and crown. The look brings to mind the garb of sages and wise wizards rather than royalty or warriors. He's powerful yet approachable because there is humility in his bearing. And that humility springs from a well of healthy self-worth, self-love, and a deep love for others.
The shoes are not meant to be attractive. They are meant to help him ascend the throne, nothing more.

ok, I'm back with a fresh episode of "Queerbaiting Continues" (subscribe and follow for more)
so, to clear up that i get it right - what we're getting from Loki2 so far is this: creators are actively setting up Loki and Mobius (while still not confirming them to be canon) and not even trying to actually set up Loki with Sylvie (and not addressing the kiss even once throughout all four episodes).
okay then, I'm having some thoughts.
so i see everyone in the fandom analysing how well Loki understands Mobius' coping mechanisms earlier in the season that he decides to offer him some pie after Mobius had been in lots of stress. and that it's exactly what Mobius wants to do now, before Sylvie guts him and walks away with Loki following her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but what i don't see enough (maybe it's just me idk) is the analysis of the "pie land" dialogue between Loki and Sylvie in ep.4
so right away Loki starts defending Mobius explaining that just because he's not acting insane like Sylvie does (like Loki did in the past) that doesn't mean he doesn't care. and he also points out that Sylvie is here not because she shares Loki's beliefs, but only because her plan failed.
but after that.. this is where the scene goes INSANE in my humble opinion: Loki turns the moral of the whole first "Thor" movie and "the main hero's journey to become the best versoin of himself" into huge metaphor of his own growth. growth that he achieved through the first season and continues on going that path. so what was that then, the thing that helped Thor to change so much? the thing that turned him from insufferable, angry, revengeful, arrogant child whose first impulse is to destroy anything that causes some kind of inconvenience?
love.
it was falling in love with Jane that made Thor revalue his morals and his behavior. and now Loki is standing before Sylvie telling her that not long time ago he mocked his brother for his "softness" thinking it to be a weakness. but now Loki understands Thor. so what is he saying with this? who was this person for Loki, that made him change and understand his brother? understand that the lack of desire to destroy is actually not a weakness. who was that?
Mobius.
it was Mobius that made him better as a person.
so, at this point, friends, i actually don't know what to think. because it's not even a classic example of queerbaiting anymore. that one was hidden very deeply under the surface and was caused by the state of the industry, which simply did not have the niche for the queer media and was profoundly scared to lose it's homophobic audience because they thought that it was practically not possible to make money on queer audience. this is not the case now. it looks a lot like creators do know what they're doing writing scenes like this one, which honestly makes it even worse than if they were simply oblivious.

I Don't Miss You At All (ITA One Shot)
Loki x Reader Avengers The Office AU (Slowwwwww Burn)
Warnings: tears, trauma, therapy
Word Count: Thank you Tari for being such a nice friend. For reading all that I blurt out here. Thank you for being my reader and supporter even though I have been so inconsistent as a writer and as a friend.
MASTERLIST in bio, darlings. Tags are open (check bio)
"Looking for something?" Your attention is brought back by the gorgeous olive-skinned lady in her late forties sitting before you. "Hmm?" is all that comes out of you while you are biting the dead skin on your lower lip. "You were looking around for something on the ceiling and-" she points at the French doors opening to the porch outside with the pen in her hand- "the doorway." Your crinkled brows relax and go up a little. "Oh. Right. It was...I was looking for cameras." Now lady furrows her brows even though she is smiling at you. "It was on involuntary." You shrug casually. The lady does not react. "I am used to cameras in my vicinity." you try to summarise. She opens the notebook in her lap. "Nothing negative. Just a project my father has going on." Now her lips make that straight line and you suddenly feel like you've failed a test. "So there is an entire crew-" "Miss Y/N, breathe." she tries to calm you down.
You breathe in, hold the air and let it out slowly, taking in your surroundings again. The beige-coloured room is well-lit- thanks to the abundant sunlight coming through the French doors. You sit on a cream-coloured velvet sofa, wearing your oversized shirt with a happy Tony Tony Chopper eating candy on the front and a pair of blue mom jeans. "So-" the lady starts, seeing that your nerves seem better- "why did you come in today?" "Doctor I-" "Jane. It's Jane. Please call me Jane," she urges with a smile before settling on her cream sofa. "Okay...Jane." You nod.  "So, tell me why you are here today." Pressing your hands between your thighs and letting the warmth seep in, you feel your chest tighten. The air that goes in to help you form the words suddenly feels heavy in the lungs. Your eyes seem to betray you a little too. You smile, trying your best to let your facial muscles close your eyes as much as possible and wipe away the moisture by some miracle. But they fail. A tear falls down your cheek, falling right through the smile. "Because I'm not okay," your voice croaks. Your shivering hands try to wipe away the tears that now seem endless. "Sorry," you whisper an apology. "It's okay," Jane soothes you, pouring a glass of water from the jar sitting in front of you on her coffee table, "let it out. That's good. We're halfway there already because you are aware you are not feeling okay. So, no need to rush. Crying is also a part of it. It is okay to cry." You gulp down the water in seconds before pouring yourself another round. "Okay," you announce softly, nodding in Jane's direction. "Take a minute if-" "No, I'm good," you confirm and settle back down in your seat with a sigh. Jane's eyes smile their kindest smile at you. "Okay. let's begin."
"Yeah-" you nod- "so, it's been a few weeks now..."
Tumblr media
The six am alarm starts to buzz on your phone and before the alarm tone can even begin to ascend, your fingers are stopping the buzz. There is no point in the alarm when you lay wide awake in your bed in the dorm room, your eyes looking at infinity in the sky outside as they have watched it break from dawn to a proper sunny day. The constant throbbing in your head has become a part of your existence now. You lay in your bed for another hour and you would have laid there for two more had Yusuf not knocked at your door. "Y/N! We have a lecture in twenty minutes. Please tell me you are still not sleeping." You have heard him, but your body lays in bed, still looking at the sky. Yusuf knocks again. Silence. "Okay, I'm coming in," he shouts, "you better be decent because we cannot miss today's lecture." You groan and crinkle your nose when Yusuf pulls you up by your arms. You protest, not wanting to attend today's lectures. But Yusuf's begging techniques seem to be your weakness. Deodorant under your armpits and a change of shirt later you are sitting through the day's lectures, pretending to write in your notebook. Everything around you is on the move- the professors, the students, the assignments leaflets, the laptops, even the bugs crawling on the class's windows outside- while you sit in one place. Nothing seems to grab much of your attention. Except for that one whiff of jasmine, lily and a mix of spices that sometimes travels through the air and fires up the wrong wirings inside you. Some days it just makes your heart race up a bit, making you short of breath for a while. On other days, you sweat through your body, unable to breathe, looking for the washroom to run into before crumbling down in there. Today it makes your hands shiver. Your back can feel the cold sweats coming in. "I'll just come back," you mumble to Yusuf and rush to the washroom from the back door of the lecture hall. .
"All good?" Yusuf's concerns are always transparent. "Yeah. I think the dinner from last night was acting up." You smile at him through the lie.  More lectures start and finish before it is time for lunch. "Don't feel like it," you declare, "not hungry." "Have some juice still," Yusuf presses, already having brought you a glass of fresh pressed juice. "Dude, that shit's expensive," you state before sliding it back to him. "I can't. I don't feel so good." But Yusuf does not give up. You take three sips before your stomach begins to feel the nausea. You sit in the grass looking at the endless stream of students going about their day with no thought going inside your brain. And then you see those pair of green eyes. Your heart starts to race again. Only to find it is someone else. But it is already too late. The tears have begun to form. And it is starting to get hard to hide them. Taking out your earphones and plugging them in, you press play on a random tutorial on how to make rice in ten different ways and lie down on the grass with your eyes closed. Some days it works.
.
It's four in the evening and you have volunteered to get dog food for Yusuf's pitbull. You have your car now to drive you through the city, a second-hand ocean-blue Honda.  Your mind knows that dog food is an excuse. But no arguments are made. You sit in the city traffic, waiting for the light to turn green. Some random radio channel is turned on in your car. You have never bothered to set it up before. They start to play a familiar song.
Wind blows Blew me to where I belong It was you A home I came into the night
The cold sweats start again. It gets harder to breathe. The light has turned green but the vehicles in front of you are not moving. You shut down the radio and press the horn into infinity. Your car revs and breaks into a spree, only stopping at a spot where there aren't any eyes and you can finally hit your steering wheel as much as you want before you break down into an ugly cry. Two hours pass before you text Yusuf you cannot find the specific brand of dog food and return to the campus. Parking your car near your department building, you walk to the dorms. It's a thirty-minute walk.  Sometimes you feel like you hear the familiar soft British accent on your way. Your chest feels the heaviness again, but your brain simply makes it for another student on campus. You don't have any more tears left to shed for the day.
.
Back at the dorm, you stand under the shower for ten minutes doing nothing. The shirt and PJs you had on last night are what you wear again. You come down to the dining area to see if you have any appetite. You smile at the familiar faces that greet you. You know your smiles are growing weaker every day. But there is nothing you can do about it. Salad. Soup. Bread. Pasta. Fruits. Ice cream. A tiny leaf of lettuce. A finger-sized slice of bread. Two pieces of penne with barely any sauce on them and a slice of apple. That is all that goes onto your plate. Even the lady serving you is concerned for her favourite student who used to leave the dining hall only after stuffing down two huge servings of everything. You sit on the table in the corner right by the window. It is a cold spot so no one ever prefers to sit there. Even as you sit down to eat the contents on your plate, you are not able to finish the bread and the pasta.
.
Back in your dorm room, you sit in the dark on your bed for about an hour before your phone rings. It's Tony. You look at the time on your phone. It's time for the usual call. You switch on the study light to accept the video call but your fingers never touch the accept button. Finally, you accept the voice call, putting it on speaker. "Hey, sweetie," Tony's voice greets from the other end. "'Sup," you greet back, not truly matching the enthusiasm. "How was college today?" "It was fine." "..." "..." "Okay. Cool. How's that car doing?" "Doing okay." "Because I can send you a better-" "It's doing okay." "...okay," Tony's voice goes down an amplitude, "that's good to know. So...did they have anything good in dinner today?" "Same old." "Did you eat?" you can hear the concern in his voice. "Mm-hmm." Silence. "Are you in your lab?" you finally say, wanting to prevent any more questions that you did not have the strength to answer. "Yeah. Working on a special suit right now. For a special someone." There is a pause for a moment. "Can you...can I hear you work? I have to work on an assignment and I need some sort of background noise to help me get it done faster." "Oh, okay." The amplitude is a little better now.  You lie down on your bed, your legs bent close to your chest, keeping your phone next to you. Tony goes on with this work, chatting with Friday. You continue to listen to him, never consciously feeling the tears fall from your eyes, wetting your pillow. Bruce joins Tony sometime later. You don't know how long has it been since you've been lying there. But you can hear Bruce tell Tony it's two in the morning so they should call it a night. "Y/N, sweetie? You asleep?" Tony whispers through the phone. You say nothing. "I guess she's asleep. Good night, goose," Tony hums before ending the call. You do not wish for the sleep to come, for it has not visited you for quite some days now. But the fear of seeing a familiar face when you fall asleep is also the reason you do not want slumber to hit you. But it comes tonight. Bringing with it reasons you are going to feel the numbness, the hole in your chest, the cold sweats all over again tomorrow.
Tumblr media
Loki only visits your dorm when you are not there. You are gone early from the room because you have an eight am class today. The room reeks. Used tissues lie on the floor, below the study table, overfilling the dustbin. There are half-eaten packets of chips sitting on the desk along with half-finished cans of soda. Your hoodies, sweat pants, shorts and undergarments lie in a crumpled mess in the cupboard as well as the laundry basket. He opens the windows first- noticing the dead succulents on your window sill that Yusuf has brought as a 'dorm-warming gift'- before getting to work. He clears the trash, cleans the floors, disinfects the desk, changes the bedsheet and duvet, and replaces the dirty laundry with clean ones. Taking one last look at the room, he makes sure to leave your clothes just as he had found them to not raise any suspicion. He replaces your bottles and mugs with fresh water, praying that you will drink as much as possible. Then he leaves.
.
He disguises himself as another student to watch you from afar. Sometimes he catches you lost in a thought in the window of your lecture hall. On other days he sees you looking at the void while sitting in the campus grounds. It is visible you have lost weight. Your eyes have bags under them. Your signature smile that went up to your eyes is not there. Twice he has witnessed you rush into the washroom with great urgency, and both times he has stopped himself from following you, for multiple reasons. Both times he has waited outside in the corridor, pacing back and forth. Both times you have come out with a freshly washed face, red eyes hiding behind spectacles and a smile for whoever greeting you in the corridor.
.
He keeps a good distance whenever you walk back from your department to your dorm building. The way back is dimly lit and you prefer to walk alone, no matter the time. Sometimes he watches you stop abruptly in your path. Sometimes you sniffle and wipe something off your face. Other times you take your phone out and look at something on it for a long time before closing it and resuming your walk.
.
He avoids the nights. They do not bring the best of him. Because they are not the best for you.
Tumblr media
"Jane, is it? You do realise I would not be here had those two baboons not tricked me into walking into your office on the pretext of an emergency." Loki huffs and rubs one hand on his face while the other rests on his hips. Jane purses her lips and shrugs in agreement before sitting down on her sofa. "Must have been an emergency for your friends to bring to a clinical psychologist, right?" Loki chuckles sarcastically. Jane is unbothered. "Oh, Miss Clinical Psychologist-" Loki's eyes have nothing but pity as he looks in the doctor's direction- "you are talking to a thousand-year-old being infamous for the art of manipulation. So, no offence, but I am pretty sure I can diagnose myself better than any doctor on this planet. Let alone this galaxy." This time Jane is the one chuckling. "I am two hundred per cent sure no one has the knowledge of psychology on this planet as much as you. And I take your word for all that you said. But-" she takes a tiny remote from the coffee table in front of her, points and clicks it to the opaque window separating her room from the reception outside, revealing Peter Parker and Scott Lang pacing the length of the reception hall- "for the sake of those two worried souls, why not humour me for...twenty minutes? Not to mention, even the best of psychologists need another experienced person to help them out in desperate times." Loki looks out at the two figures who have no clue they are being watched. He can't hear but Peter is saying something to Scott with a look of anxiousness, to which Scott simply keeps his hands on Peter's shoulders for a moment, telling him something, and finally taking him into his embrace. The window goes back to white. Loki comes back into the room. He is lost in a thought for a moment. "Well played, Jane," Loki announces in a mumble. "Had it been any other day, I would not give a damn about any of this." Jane simply gestures to the seat kept for Loki with both her hands. The God sits down and sighs.
"Why do you think they are so worried about you?" Loki raises his hands in defeat. "Beats me." Loki notices Jane has not touched the dairy kept in front of her. Neither her pen. She simply sits there for the God to elaborate. After a prolonged moment of thought, and the presence of zero judgment on the doctor's face, Loki gives in. "It's their friend. She...and I are not on speaking terms anymore." Loki's voice has gone soft. Jane nods. "Is their friend not your friend?" "...she was. Till she confessed that she liked me." Loki huffs the 'liked' part as if it were an insult. "Okay." Jane nods, adjusting herself a bit towards to edge of the seat, interested in knowing more. "Nothing more to it, Jane," he points out, averting his gaze, "she's gone...a bit far so we don't see each other much." "So, you do see each other." Loki takes in a long breath, furrowing his brows as if trying to push something away. "No. I go see her. She is staying in the city. I-" Loki's gaze goes down to his fingers that have started playing with the velvet on the sofa- "check in on her. Sometimes." "Why do you need to check in on her?" Even if that question is out of curiosity, Jane makes no effort to react in any way. Loki scoffs. "Because she is wasting away, Jane. A woman like her, who is capable of changing worlds is wasting away in a box half the size of the room we are sitting in because she was rejected by the God she fell for." Jane pours herself a glass of water. "You still haven't answered my question, though, Loki." Loki looks at her in confusion. "Why do you need to check in on her?" She picks the glass up. "What do you mean- I just told you she is-" "Wasting away, yes. That's the choice she made. Why do you feel the need to go there?" Jade sits back with the glass still in her hand. "Because I am the reason she is in this mess." Loki cannot understand what is so hard to understand. Jade turns her head a little. "So are millions of other women after a breakup. Why is it so important for you to go back to her? You have already told her how you feel." Silence. The glass is sitting in her lap. Loki can feel an unnerving feeling in his chest as he glares at that glass of water.
"Because I love her," he finally admits. "Because I cherish her. Because she nearly died because of me." Jade does not speak in the silence that comes after. "Because it is preposterous to think I could ever be with her." The confidence and anger with which Loki had entered the room has dissolved into the sea of certain new emotions; emotions that seem to be taking over his features gradually. The previously poised glare has turned into a fragile pair of eyes blinking a bit faster than before. "And why-" Jane's voice is soft as it stresses her words- "do you think you cannot be with her." Jane raises the glass to her lips, drinking the water, giving the room a good long pause. At that moment, the God feels the rush of tears in his eyes, the onset of a slight quiver building in his lips, the shakiness of his breath as his throat tries to bring out what has been sitting inside that little boy for ages. "Because I'm a monster." his voice breaks as he looks back at Jane. "Because I don't deserve that love." He tries to breathe in to compose himself only for his throat to shake. "Because I am scared of not being worthy. Because I am scared she will find out it is all a facade and I am nothing but a spineless pawn. Because I have only been loved on conditions and am afraid to get hurt again." Tears fall frantically through Loki's eyes. He does not bother to wipe them off. Jane pours Loki a glass of water and hands it to him. "Must have been hard to say it out loud," she states. "I can assure you if you choose to sit with me to figure it out, it will be a bit easier than it is right now. It won't be a smooth sail, but it will hurt less. And you just want the pain to stop, don't you?" Loki takes in a lungful of breath. "I want it to stop." Janes nods in reassurance. "Please make it stop."

The Baby Fever Wedding...
Tumblr media
moodboard by @mochie85 divider by @fictive-sl0th
Baby Fever Crew and fellow readers... It's time to assemble, because I'm searching for some helpers, who are interested in becoming my fellow wedding planner!
Huge thanks to @muddyorbsblr ! She helps me coordinate all this a lil' bit and is my right-hand woman. 💖 Also, kudos to @lokisgoodgirl , who gave me the idea to do little tasks. (I know, it's been months ago since we talked about this, but nevertheless... Thank you, friend!) 🩵
And this is how it works...
Tumblr media
How to participate...
If you are interested and want to sign up to this, just leave a comment on this post. That's all!
How do I choose my helpers?
That depends. I have 14 tasks. If just enough people sign up for this (not more or less than 14), you'll definitely be chosen. If more people want to participate, I'm going to put all names in a pot and randomly draw 14 names, so a bit of luck is needed.
What awaits you if you get chosen...
I'm going to give you a little task, in order to help me organize Y/N's and Loki's wedding. For example: Design the wedding rings or choose the flowers. You have enough time to think about it and tell me what you want. I am going to write it.
Rules & Other information...
Please only comment once. Makes things easier for me.
Please be patient. This is a huge project for me and I never did something like this before, so...
You are allowed to name two tasks in your comments, which you'd like to be assigned with. I can't promise that it's going to work out for you, but I'll try to have consideration for it!
Example: @ holdmytesseract Wedding rings & flowers
You have three days to sign up, so no pressure!
If you have questions, please send me an ask or a DM! Don't be shy!
And these are the tasks...
Design the wedding rings!
Choose Y/N's wedding dress, shoes and jewelry!
How should Loki's suit look like?
And how his armour?
Their hairstyle. (Do they need a new hairstyle or even a haircut?)
Y/N's bridesmaids (Natasha, Wanda, Pepper & Jane) are in need of dresses, too!
Loki's best man (Thor, of course.) needs a suit and armour, too.
Since the wedding takes place on Asgard, we need a few Midgardian pre-wedding/wedding traditions, too!
Flowers are a must have!
Create the invitations for the wedding!
A cake will be needed as well!
Where on Asgard takes the ceremony place and where the festives? We also need some decoration, right? (I feel like this is a two-man task!)
One of the most important things... Music! Do we have a DJ perhaps?
I'm in need of a entertainment department as well! Do they play party/wedding games? Karaoke? Are there Asgardian wedding games? Something entirely else? (I think this is a two-man task as well!)
Tumblr media
I think that's it. I hope I didn't forget anything... Well, with that being said... Let's start this! I'm beyond excited!

If thor could meet mobius, i think he'd become protective of his brother's friend and willing to take a bullet for him like loki did with jane in the dark world
(Thor protects everyone but im just talking abt the parallel portion)
completely agreed. I think thor might be a little (over)protective of loki at first, but once mobius gains his trust and once thor knows mobius is not going to hurt his brother, I think that’s when thor becomes extremely overprotective of mobius.
because while thor is (over)protective of loki — they’re both gods, and loki can protect himself with his powers and magic, etc — mobius is literally just a guy. and mobius is someone who loki loves, which means he’s thor’s friend too. and thor will do anything to protect his friends.
and also because mobius is just a smol mortal, it’s at least my headcanon that thor is very, very overprotective of mobius.

Are you dense or something?? Why are you acting like Loki learnt affection from Mobius like????saving Jane and all? Loki had been overly and openly affectionate with Thor for all his life and it only became weird from Thor 1 all the creators and actors have been very vocal about it, he cared about thors friends and protected their lives. Y'all really weird and just want to make everything about your ship when it's not.
I completely agree that deep down Loki has always had empathy and affection for Thor and those he cares about! I made a post on that here where Loki risks his life to save Jane and I mentioned some of that in the tags. I think Mobius’ impact on Loki was to give him freedom—to allow Loki to express his feelings, to show his affection, to be vulnerable and open in ways that he had previously only been taught were weaknesses. In 2x4, Loki talks about how Thor had been changed by Jane and how, at the time, Loki mocked him for becoming ‘weak.’ Because that’s what Loki had learned from Odin. He learned that he would only be worthy, he would only be good enough if he could achieve the throne, if he was seen as powerful and strong by others. When Loki tried to please his father by getting rid of their sworn enemies, it still wasn’t enough for Odin and Loki was cast aside for it. I think Loki never really knew how to express his affection and care in a way that wouldn’t lead to him being abandoned or looked down upon. Loki was taught that the only way to become powerful and worthy was to show no vulnerability, as he says in 1x1, the “elaborate trick” to inspire fear and control. He had absolutely no examples of how to show affection and still be respected for it.
Then when Mobius came along, he truly showed Loki how to trust and be open with another person, to show vulnerability and affection in a healthy and supportive way. Mobius told Loki ‘I see who you pretend to be but I know what parts of yourself you’re hiding and therefore I know you can be good.’ Mobius showed Loki that he didn’t need a throne to be worthy, he doesn’t need to pretend not to care to get others to look up to him, he can be gentle and he can trust others and those people will trust him back. Besides Loki’s mother, I think Mobius was the first person that believed in Loki’s goodness and gave him that freedom to express who he really is. Thor said multiple times that Loki could be better, could be more, but I don’t think even Thor ever really expected Loki to change. I think Loki’s interactions with Mobius gave him that freedom he never had to become gentler and more open throughout the series than he had a chance to be in the movies.
It’s true that I don’t think Mobius taught Loki how to care about people, I think Mobius was ultimately the first person that allowed Loki to just be, to express his trust and friendship without any expectations or judgement. Mobius transformed Loki’s views on how much someone is allowed to show of themselves and still be respected. Mobius said ‘you can trust me, you can be yourself, you can show me gentleness, and I will never mock you for it.’ I just don’t think Loki ever had anyone like that before and he never learned how to express his care before he met Mobius. Even if you don’t think they have romantic feelings for each other, Mobius clearly had a transformative impact on Loki’s sense of self, which Loki displays in his affection toward Mobius and interactions with other characters going forward.

At the risk of rubbing some fans the wrong way:
It makes me feel some sort of way that Thor abandoning the Throne he was always meant to sit in for an ordinary life he wanted led to a sequence of catastrophes for him. His absence at various points led to Odin disappearing, Odin dying, Asgard destroyed, Gorr targeting New Asgard and finally, Jane dying for using Mjolnir to stop him.
Thor, tragically, walked away from his purpose and lost everything that was dear to him.
And now there's Loki, who honestly committed outrageous crimes in order to get that same throne, was denied it, and then ended up finding loved ones and friends and an ordinary life he could live. But when his throne presented itself, when he had to sacrifice it all for his (glorious) purpose, he accepted the burden and saved the TVA, Mobius, Sylvie and everyone else.
Loki fought for his purpose, tragically sacrificed his ordinary life, and got to live with the knowledge that those he loved were safe and taken care of.
There is something extraordinarily Shakespearean about that. The 'horrible' brother accepting his destiny and becoming the hero and the 'heroic' brother failing to be the big hero because he rejected his destiny.

I don't know if it was intentional or not but one thing I love is the parallel between Thor's journey in the first Thor film and Loki's journey in the Loki series.
Thor starts out as rather arrogant and having a sense of entitlement when it came to the throne. Loki also starts out arrogant and believing it was his right to have a throne.
Thor is then humbled when Odin strips him of his powers and banishes him to earth. The same thing happens to Loki when he is arrested by the TVA and can no longer use his magic. I think, for both of them, having these powers stripped away forced them into this self discovery where they really had to examine who they truly are and what was truly important to them.
They also both kind of learn about a parent's death whilst they are in this humbled state, I guess you could call it, and both believe they are responsible for that death. Thor is told that his father has died and that the cause of his death was that Thor's disobedience and resulting banishment was too much for Odin. Loki learns of his mother's death during his interrogation and that he was the one that directed the dark elves to her.
For them both the places they were sent as punishment actually comes to be a place they care about, with people they care about, for Thor earth becomes a kind of second home, and for Loki the TVA becomes home. They also both take on this role of becoming that place's protector.
Another big part of their journey was them falling in love and I think there are some more parallels here too. Thor and Jane both find themselves working together against Shield because they have a common cause, she wants to get her research back and Thor wants his hammer. It is while working together that they get to know each other and learn about each other's lives and worlds and fall in love. It's a similar story with Loki and Sylvie they end up working together against the TVA because they have a common cause, finding who is behind the TVA. It is while they are working together that they get to know each other, learn about each other's lives and fall in love. The difference between the two couples is that with Sylki there is this enemies to lovers troupe but with Thor and Jane its more like love at first sight troupe, its obvious that they were both crushing hard on each other from the start. But what is funny is both couples end up acting like teens in love around each other.
I do think though that meeting and falling in love with Jane and Sylvie has a huge impact on Thor and Loki and their character development. Both started out as somewhat arrogant and self absorbed people, for Thor in the first movie, the throne was all about his own triumph and glory and he saw it as his birth right, something he was entitled to. Loki wanted a throne for very similar reasons, as well as a desire to be seen as equal to Thor. When they fall in love with Jane and Sylvie, they learn what it is to put another's wants, dreams and well being above their own. It becomes less about what they want and more about making sure the one they love is ok. It's no longer 'I' but 'we'. Meeting and falling in love with these women fundamentally changes both brothers.
It is them falling in love that also leads to them both making sacrifices to keep the ones they love and the new place they've come to care for, safe. Thor destroys the bridge knowing it will cut him off from Jane and that he might not ever see her again but also knowing it was the right thing to do and also the best way to protect her and earth. Loki destroys the loom and holds the timelines together himself knowing it means he might never be with Sylvie again but also knowing its the best way to give her and all his friends a chance at a life. In both cases it was a completely unselfish and pure act of love. Jane continues searching for Thor after they are separated and Sophia has said that she doesn't think Sylvie will just walk away when it comes to Loki and that she'll want to find a way to him and to make sure he is ok.
I just think the parallels between the two brothers and the two couples are really interesting, I'd personally love to see these four in a scene together, they'd have so much to talk about.

Loki had Jane at a disadvantage, pinned on the bed beneath him as he slowly worked her up with that deliciously torturous tongue. Whatever Jane had expected from their beneficial arrangement, this had not quite been it. He had started with sensual whispers against her skin, proving there was something to that Silver Tongue name beyond diplomacy. None of her previous partners had been partly articulate in during love making. This was just sex. But his voice was practically hypnotizing, it narrowed Jane’s thoughts to only Loki hovering above her and the promise of what was to come. She didn’t even notice as he deftly unfastened each button on her shirt, baring her skin for him to taste. Jane had tried to hurry him along then. Urged Loki to be quiet and get to the main event. But it seemed like he was savoring this moment and that was what was throwing her off. Friends with benefits was not something Jane had explored, but she assumed it would be….fast? She had been so so wrong. Was that such a bad thing?
And what good was Loki’s tongue if not for speaking? He answered his own question, licking, biting, kissing his way downward. A clear purpose in his mind despite whatever his tone might have indicated. Jane shifted against the sheets, tilting her head to give the god better access to her throat. That clever tongue teasing her breast had Jane inhaling sharply, a hint of the pleasured gasp that she bit back. Where Loki might be verbose in bed, the doctor was characteristically quiet.
Jane met his gaze, and knew what Loki would see as he looked at her. Brown eyes darkened by desire….but the normal vision of herself faded away then, like morning fog in the sunlight as Jane remembered what she actually looked like now. Remembered why she had been okay with a physical relationship with Loki even in this sickly state. Right, she had assumed it would be quick. The idea that he would take his time and truly look at the wraith she had become had not crossed her mind. That was the reason for the impatience. Why she had wanted him to just fuck her already. Have fun and be done! Remembering had Jane wanting to pull her shirt shut once more to hide herself from his piercing eyes. But god she didn’t want him to stop what he was doing either….still she was half naked for him but at a complete disadvantage. If he was going to see her so vulnerable, it only seemed fair to get the same.
“Take this off?” Jane asked and trailed a hand down the fabric covering his back. With the softness in her voice, her words didn’t come off as an order like when she spoke before. “And then maybe I’ll be patient.”

Who are your top ten favorite Thor characters? Why are they your faves?
Hello 👋🏼😄 and wow what an interesting question! I’m going to based the Thor characters based on the comics and the movies as well!
1. Jane Foster -When I first was in middle school, my school had a book about all the comic heroes and she was on there. And something about her story really stuck with me. I thought “wow this character is so cool! I think she’s my favorite superhero” Then of course I watched Thor and I figured out that Jane Foster was played by none other than the fantastic Natalie Portman who I knew because before being a Marvel fan I was a huge Star Wars fan and I thought Padmé was so cool. And over time as I started watching more movies with Jane and finally last year getting most of the Mighty Thor comics, she is by far my favorite superhero and character in Marvel. She represents what a hero should be in my opinion.
2. Thor - Now when I watched Thor I was really fond of him. I loved how he saved the people of Jane’s town despite knowing them for about a couple days. I really loved MCU Thor mostly. Chris Hensworth did a fantastic job as Thor. No one could have done it better. I love Thors kind and compassionate heart and his need to help others. His backstory as well is so interesting! To this day, Thor remains one me of my favorite Avenger!
3. Darcy - I know she’s not part of the comics but one of the best parts of the first and second Thor movies for me was Darcy’s humor and how sassy she was. And I love how she became a doctor like Jane in Wandavision. Overall she was such a fun and relatable character that kept me laughing!
4. Freya/Frigga - One of the things I loved about reading the Thor comics was whenever Thors mother Freya was on. She is such a fascinating character. She’s intelligent, a good queen and mother and overall a badass! I always loved her relationship with Thor and I feel like we never got enough of that in the Thor franchise. And side note I also loved her friendship with jane and how they are always there for each other! I really wished we had more of Freya in the movies because she’s just so amazing
5. Heimdall - I love Heimdall in the movies and in the comics. I loved the bond that he and Thor shared throughout the movies and comics. And I love how he was sort of like a second father to Thor and Loki. What makes me sad is that both versions end up dying (rip Heimdall) I hope we do see more of him though!
6. Roz Solomon - Roz Solomon is so underrated in the comics! She’s an amazing SHIELD agent who’s such a badass! I loved the relationship she and Jane had especially! It just felt so natural and they greatly respected each other! One of my favorite parts in the comics is when Jane tells her she’s Thor showing how she trusts her and Roz goes “can everyone stop turning into things now” Overall such a sassy, awesome character! I was sad when we didn’t see much of her in the Valkyrie series!
7. Fandral - I remember reading both the comics and watching the first Thor I never really payed attention to the warrior three. But recently I watched the dark world thanks to @beheworthy 😄 and Fandral kept making me laugh the whole time. And I love Zachary Levi too so that made it even better! And then I reread some of my thor comics he was briefly in and he was great in that too. He’s just an overall funny character!
8. Volstagg - Out of all the warriors three, in my opinion, Volstagg had the kindest heart. He would help Jane being senator in the Congress of Worlds as well as just being a good friend! The saddest moment he had is when he picked up the War Hammer and was becoming rage full. It made me so sad that kind Volstagg was the War Thor. And he was great in the movies too! Rest in peace Ray Stevenson 😢
9. Sif - I’ve recently been loving Sif! She’s such an amazing warrior as well as protective of Asgard in the movies and in the comics. I love how in the comics they made her the new gatekeeper to replace heimdall. I thought that greatly suited her. She’s truly a fierce fighter!
10. Valkyrie (Brunhilde) - Valkyrie’s death killed me in war of the realms. I was not expecting her to die so horribly in War of the Realms. I also really enjoyed Valkyrie in the Marvels! She was really funny and her dynamic with Carol was adorable!
Those are all my favorite characters in the Thor franchise. I also decided to make a list of characters I liked the least in the Thor franchise
1. Odin - I HATE HIM SO MUCH! I am not even kidding you I despise Odin I could write a whole essay on why I hate him (perhaps another time) but my blog is an Odin hate blog. He’s at the top of the list for a variety of reasons I won’t list right now.
2. Loki - I’m only putting Loki on here because I love to hate him. Loki was never really one of my favorites when I first became a marvel fan but I just love to hate him. That’s the only reason why im putting him on here.
But thank you so much @zndr315-blog for asking me this! I’ve never really gotten to list my favorite Thor characters so thank you! 😄🙌🏼

The entire series is a love story in every sense of the word. It is a love story, and it is both triumphant and tragic.
The finale was gorgeously executed. It answers every point in Loki's development poetically.
1. He never wanted the throne. It was not about power but loneliness and the need to belong.
2. To have purpose is to choose your burden.
3. Love does not make one soft, it transforms us to be unimaginably strong.
S1 focused primarily on 2 things: 1. a second chance, and 2. Self-love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 3 main characters have a relationship in which love cascades. While Mobius loves Loki for who he is outright, his friendship and support allows Loki to have compassion for himself. Sylvie represents all of Loki's trauma and flaws. In loving her, Loki grants her a second chance expecting nothing in return. The second chance Mobius extended to Loki, thus extends to her.
Tumblr media
S2 focused primarily on the love between friends, which I do believe turned into unrequited love for Mobius in S1E4 (manifesting as rage and jealousy).
Tumblr media
That love turns resigned, and the jealousy reemerges in S2E2 albeit in a constrained, milder form.
Tumblr media
Unbeknownst to Mobius, his romantic love is finally returned in S2E5, after Loki experiences enough platonic love for Mobius that the nature of affection shifts upon losing Mobius a second time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The timing of this realization is profoundly tragic. When they are finally on the same page, the finale sets the stage for Loki to engage with the fourth, most powerful form of love:
AGAPE
A selfless love for everyone. Loki could not have reached this point without first experiencing self-love, platonic love, and yes, romantic love. All forms of love are demonstrated in the series, which gives Loki the strength of sacrifice, confronting his worst fear: being alone.
I find it deeply poignant that Loki uses his magical life force to create Yggdrasil, the tree of life, replacing the cold force of HWR's technology with his own heart, allowing everything and everyone to grow infinitely through space and time. There cannot be a more powerful ending for Loki's character, and the tragedy is the point.
But Loki embraces this burden willingly, lovingly, for all of them, most especially Mobius.
Tumblr media
ON MOBIUS
It is only Mobius that senses something is deeply wrong. The first time, he asks, "Are you okay?" The second time, he notes Loki's odd comment, "This time?" The third time, (first for Mobius since he didn't remember each reset) instinctively, he becomes desperate. He grabs Loki by the lapels, "What the shit are you doing?" He tries to stop Loki, but Loki won't let him.
Tumblr media
The fourth time, he simply says, "Loki?"
Throughout S2, it is Mobius that Loki turns to when he is afraid, doesn't know what to do, or seeks comfort. He returns what Mobius provides him in S2E2 in the pie automat. In S2E4, he defends Mobius's character to Sylvie and compares where he is now, as a person, with Thor's experience with Jane, a mere Midgardian mortal.
In S2E5, it is Mobius Loki timeslips to the most and the first person his heart seeks out once OB provides him with an answer to his fiction problem.
That Loki seeks Mobius's wisdom one last time and holds onto Mobius's hand as long as he can in the finale is significant. Mobius's words about choosing your burden are devastatingly true. These words propel Loki to make his choice.
And Loki walking out onto the platform in the finale is a direct reciprocation of this (S2E1):
Tumblr media
This is an all-encompassing love story. Let noone tell you otherwise.

Seductively Destructive, Chapter 12
Tumblr media
L: You have no idea how much I miss you already, pet. I’ll see you super soon. xxx
Erin’s heart hurt at reading the latest message from Loki. It had only been a week since she’d been back home after the tour, but she really missed him.
It was weird being back home, trying to adjust again. She had managed to get hold of a job at the local shop, so at least she had something to tide her over for now. Luckily they were looking for someone new to work for them and to start straight away.
Loki phoned her every day, sometimes twice a day. And they messaged a lot, too.
But it was weird, Erin felt… odd. She felt like she was coming out of some sort of trance or spell. Thinking back to a few things, she was starting to doubt whether their relationship together had been entirely healthy or not… Yet, her stomach leaped excitedly and her heart raced whenever he messaged or called.
Jane had been on holiday for the first week of Erin being back home. But when she got home too, Erin was so happy to see her best friend again.
They ordered takeaway that night and planned to watch a movie. Jane wanted to hear all about her journey on tour with Loki first though. Erin grabbed a hair bobble and tied her hair up in a bun before food arrived. Not thinking at all about the tattoo on her neck that Jane was yet to notice.
‘What is that?’ Jane squealed and rushed over towards her to get a look before she sat down.
‘Oh… Uh, a new tattoo. Got it at the same time as my dog one.’ Erin said, trying to keep the nervousness out of her voice, she knew what Jane would think of it.
‘Erin… Did you really want his name on you? Is it not a bit soon?’ Jane asked as Erin sat down next to her.
‘Nah, it’s not too soon. Course I wanted it.’ Erin tried to shrug it off.
‘And those photos too, I know you, Erin. You had no idea about them until I mentioned it, he didn’t even ask you about it. Did he?’
‘It’s fine, Jane. Everything is good. Seriously.’ Erin laughed a bit.
‘And I heard the rumours about you giving him a blowjob in the girls toilets in a club, and him fucking you in there too. For people to see.’
‘That was completely consensual!’ Erin said firmly, glaring at Jane.
‘That was? So, the other things weren’t?’ Jane said knowingly.
Erin opened her mouth but didn’t know what to say. She could feel herself slipping as her lip quivered and her eyes began to water.
‘It’s not… not like that. I love him. He loves me… But I… I was a little surprised with the tattoo, and the photos. But I like the tattoo, I think it looks cool and I have part of him with me all the time. Besides, he remembered me talking about old Sally once and remembered that I had said briefly I wanted her silhouette tattooed on me. He’s caring and considerate.’
‘Erin…’ Jane turned on the sofa and took her hand. ‘It sounds like he’s manipulated you in some situations. Were you comfortable doing the photoshoot even?’
‘Well I… Not at first, but I got better as it went on. And it gave me a confidence boost…’
Jane just gave her a look. And Erin broke down in tears.
‘Oh Erin, come here.’ She pulled Erin into a hug and tried to console her.
‘I feel conflicted… I love him, I love spending time with him. It was exciting and fun. I had the time of my life. And I actually enjoyed being his girl, the jealous fans. But I was the one all over him, the one that he picked… Yet there was just those one or two little times that I was a bit unsure. But that’s not a bad thing really, is it? The good outweighs the bad?’ Erin rambled and wiped her eyes.
Jane sighed and gave her another hug. ‘It might seem a few little things right now, but it might get worse as time goes on, become more. It’s manipulation, but that can grow into a lot more. It doesn’t sound like a very healthy relationship. I’m guessing there was a lot of alcohol and drugs in the mix, too?’
‘Some, but most nights I ended up going to the hotel room after the gig. Loki would join me at times too, so there wasn’t as much as you’d think. Honest. But we did go kinda hard the times we did.’ Erin leaned back against the sofa with a sigh, a few more tears rolled down her cheeks.
‘I don’t think he’s good for you, Erin. I know you had a great time, but maybe that’s all it should be. A one-off whirlwind romance of sex and partying.’
Erin tried not to cry anymore than she already had done. ‘I know… I know… But, it’s hard. The thought of not even speaking to him again. It’s like he’s a drug, I just can’t resist him. If he turned up on the doorstep right now, I’d be putty in his hands. I just want to be with him. Even if there are a few things that make me uneasy. Though now I’ve been away and back home for a week, it does feel like my head has cleared a little more.’
‘It will take time to get him out of your system, all the drugs and alcohol probably won’t have helped… Just, please be careful and take time to think about your future with him. But it really doesn’t sound healthy, Erin. I’m just saying that to look out for you. I don’t want anything bad to happen to you.’
‘I know.’ Erin said quietly with a nod.
She was glad when their takeaway arrived, something else to focus on.
They talked a bit more about Loki and the tour afterwards. Though it did pain Erin thinking back to a lot of it, and thinking about whether she should end it completely with Loki or not. But she wasn’t sure if she would be able to do that…
‘For as iffy as the photoshoot was, not gonna lie, you were fucking smokin’ hot!’ Jane said.
Erin laughed a bit. ‘Thanks. I did feel it afterwards and looking at the photos.’
They talked for a good few hours before finally watching the film. Then before going to bed, Erin received a message from Loki.
‘Is it Loki?’ Jane asked, noticing the way Erin was just staring at her phone.
‘Yeah… I’m going to have to say something, aren’t I? Cause every time I speak to him or get a message from him, I slip back under his spell… I need time to breathe, to think properly.’
‘So just tell him that. Tell him the truth. That you need some breathing space for a little while.’
Erin let out a big breath and nodded.
So she went to her room and put a lot of thought into what she had to say to Loki. And it took her a long time to press send when she did write out what she wanted to say. She couldn’t stop crying again afterwards, her heart felt like it was breaking into a million pieces.
E: Loki. I don’t even know where to begin with this really. But I need some time… Some space. I love you, I do. And I had the best time on tour with you. But I just need to think about things, have some breathing space. There were a few instances on tour that had me concerned, the tattoo and the photos... I felt that I was pressured, a bit, into them. That we should have talked more first about it. I just, don’t know how I am feeling. And I’m really sorry to be doing this. But please understand, I just need time to think. You’re like a drug to me, I can’t think straight when with you or talking to you. I need this breathing space for a while. I hope you understand… x

And I hate that I made you the enemy And I hate that your heart was the casualty Now, I hate that I need you

Every Way Love's A Little Stronger
Very belated fill for last year's @sifkiweek prompt "Volstagg", in tribute to Ray Stevenson's passing. You will continue to live on in our hearts and in our fics. Part two of my Fair Play 'verse. (Non-magic AU in which Thor, Loki, and Sif are college-aged.) 9360 words, AO3 link
Summary: Physically, Sif had come out of the attack with nothing more than a few bruises. Emotionally, it takes the support of her friends and the comfort of Loki's arms around her before she starts to feel like herself again. Rated T.
Sif sat on the curb outside of the gym, the twilight deepening around her, but she made no move towards her nearby motorcycle, too shaken to feel like she should be riding it right now.
"Are you going to be all right?" Karl Skurge, the gym's owner, sat down beside her now that the police had gone.
"Yeah. I mean, nothing happened, right? I fought him off."
"You did, and you should be proud of yourself for that. But you were attacked. I heard what you told the cops, what he said, what he did. The fact that it didn't go very far before you were able to stop it doesn't change the fact that something did happen." Skurge's voice was gentle.
"Yeah, all right." Sif hugged her knees, resting her chin atop them. She'd known the guy, as far as recognising him from around campus. College had started back up two weeks ago, and she'd seen him harassing Jane Foster a few days ago, obviously hitting on her and refusing to take "no" for an answer. Sif hoped she would have done so anyway, but they'd spent enough time together hanging out this past summer -- she and Loki and Thor and Jane (and sometimes Darcy, when Fandral was otherwise occupied) -- that Sif now considered Jane a friend, and she'd gone over and suggested the guy -- Haldor, he was on the football team with Thor -- leave Jane alone, refusing to be intimidated or back down when Haldor had suggested right back that she mind her own business. She'd called him out on being a creep, he'd shoved her, she'd shoved back, and things had only been stopped from escalating further by the timely arrival of Thor and Loki themselves, Thor loudly announcing his presence by asking if she needed any help, Loki endearing himself to her by saying it looked like she had everything under control but he would of course be happy to step in as well if needed for support. Faced with three against one -- or maybe four, Sif didn't know how much Jane could have brought to a fight, but she had taken that self defense course last year, and if nothing else she might have had some pepper spray on her -- Haldor had left with some cutting remark in an attempt to save face, but being forced to retreat had obviously rankled, and he'd been waiting in the shadows for her when she'd left the gym, his breath smelling of cheap beer. Irritation had quickly become anger when he had grabbed her roughly, followed by shock and a brief moment of panic as his groping hands and crude words made it clear what he intended for her. Then years of martial arts classes had kicked in and by the time the gym door had swung open again and Hogun had emerged, she'd had Haldor on the ground and Hogun had helped to make sure he'd stayed there while they'd waited for the cops to arrive, because Sif had found herself saying yes, call them, when Hogun had asked.
Thinking about it, Sif realised something. "It's because he was waiting for me, that's what's bothering me so much. If he'd just been another guy at a party who'd had one beer too many and was getting handsy, I've dealt with that, it wasn't a big deal. But this...it sounded like he knew I'd be here; has he been stalking me? Does he know my schedule, or where I live?" The thought of having to be afraid someone might be lurking in the shadows around her own home was not one she liked.
Skurge squeezed her shoulder briefly. Hogun had left after giving his statement to the police, Sif having assured him that she was fine. "I'm sure you can get a restraining order taken out on him. Do you want to come back inside for a little while? Or are you going to head home?"
"Home, but I'm not sure my head is in the right space for riding right now. And -- the house is going to be empty. Mom's at a neighbour's, playing cards. And I don't want to bother her by calling her, and asking her to come pick me up or anything; she'll know something's wrong and I don't want to talk about it again, at least not this soon." She took a deep breath. She hated how she felt, but talking to the cops had been discomforting.
"How far away do you live? I can give you a lift if you want, and you can come collect your bike tomorrow."
"No, you have a business to run, let me just think a moment." Sif put her head back down into her hands, her ponytail rather frustratingly preventing her from running her hands through it. After a moment she straightened back up as an idea struck her. "Volstagg. If he can come, he can just put my bike in the back of his van; it's big enough." She took out her phone, and hit Volstagg's number. He picked it up on the third ring.
"Hey, Sif, what's up?"
"Hi, I'm at the gym right now and I could use a ride home. If you're not in the middle of anything important, do you think you could come get me?"
"What is it? Engine trouble? Flat tire?"
"No, actually the bike's fine; it's complicated and I'd rather not get into it on the phone. But if you're busy, it's fine, I can -- "
"No, no, it's all right -- hang on, let me double check with Hildegund -- "
Sif waited, hearing Volstagg call out to his wife if it was okay if he went and picked her up.
"Hildegund says it's fine, she can handle the kids until I get back; we were just getting the youngest ones ready for bed. I'll be there in ten minutes tops."
"Thanks," said Sif gratefully. "And bring the van, I do have my bike with me and need to get it home too."
"No problem, I'll see you soon."
He hung up and Sif put her phone away, feeling better already. There was something reassuringly competent about Volstagg; she supposed it came with being a father -- and not just a father, but a father of four kids who made wrangling them all look effortless, taking spills and falls and toddler meltdowns and everything else that came along with parenting in his stride.
"He'll be here shortly," Sif told Skurge.
"That's good." He stretched out his legs comfortably, and leaned back on his hands.
"You don't have to wait with me, I'll be fine, really."
"Eh, the fresh air feels good. I've got time for a break."
Sif couldn't help smiling; with his shaved head and height, Mr. Skurge could look intimidating at first to those who didn't know him -- and he could be as tough as needed when he was in trainer mode if he didn't think you were giving it your all -- but she'd long since learned he had a gentle, supportive side as well. She wouldn't say the word "softie" to his face, but it didn't stop her from thinking it now. And it wasn't like she could call him out about the fresh air, either; while the September afternoons still held the warmth of summer, with the sun setting earlier and earlier each day, the evening air bore the fresh coolness of the oncoming autumn. She tilted her head back to watch the setting sun turn the sky to pink and orange, and it wasn't long before Volstagg's family van pulled into the lot and he cut the engine next to where her bike was parked and hopped out.
Sif stood up, dusting off the back of her jeans and shouldering her duffel bag. "Thanks for waiting with me," she told Mr. Skurge as he stood up as well. "I did appreciate it."
"You're welcome. I guess I'd better get back to work now; you take care of yourself."
"I will," Sif promised. He nodded and left her to head back into the gym.
"Hullo, lass," Volstagg said, sweeping his eyes over her appraisingly after a quick glance at her bike. "You can't simply be out of gas because you'd have told me to bring a can, so do you want to tell me what's up that you can't ride your bike home?"
"Can we put my bike in the van first?" Sif hedged, glad he could not see the bruises that she could feel under her clothing. "I'll tell you once we're inside."
He looked at her a moment longer, enough for Sif to want to squirm under his gaze, but then he nodded and opened the back of the van, taking out the jack that would elevate the bike to the level of the van bed so they could roll it right in. Sif brought her bike over and a couple of minutes later she was guiding it into place on the tarp that Volstagg had already laid down and he was climbing up to help her secure it in place with a bunch of bungee cords he'd brought. Once they'd closed up the back of the van and were settled in the front seats, however, Sif had no more reason to delay. Volstagg looked at her and she took a deep breath.
"I got into a fight. I didn't start it but I ended it. I'm not hurt beyond a few bruises, but...it left me shaken up a bit; I didn't feel like I was in the right headspace for riding safely."
Volstagg's look softened, and he nodded. "I'm glad you called, then. What was the fight about? And what happened to the other guy? If it was a guy...?"
"Yeah, it was, name of Haldor, we'd met, in a manner of speaking, on campus when I told him to get lost when I saw him bothering Jane Foster and refusing to scram when she told him she wasn't interested. And then Thor and Loki showed up and let him know it'd be four against one if he tried to start anything, so he had to back off and retreat. I guess he thought he could reassert his dominance by catching me alone, but that didn't work out as well as he'd planned." Sif's voice took on a note of scornful satisfaction. "He should be at the police station right now, getting booked for assault."
Volstagg was visibly taken aback. "It was that serious? Someone called the cops? Are you sure you're all right?"
"Just some bruises, like I told you." They'd been fresh enough that they hadn't looked too bad yet, but she'd had to show them to the cops to prove there were grounds for an assault and battery charge, had had them photographed. And of course Hogun had been there to back her up, and had testified on her behalf. "Hogun came out of the gym and saw what was happening, and when I had Haldor pinned, he asked if I wanted him to call the cops. I was going to say no, but then I thought about Jane, and what might have happened if this guy had gotten her alone somewhere where no one would see."
She swallowed; this was the hard part. "From the way Haldor grabbed at me, and the things he said -- it didn't go far enough to arrest him for anything other than assault and battery, but I'm pretty sure if I hadn't known how to defend myself, that it would have turned into a sexual assault. And I thought, if I let him walk away from this, he'll think he can keep on harassing women without consequence. So I figured if I could put any kind of a black mark on his criminal record, then it was my duty to do so." She took another deep breath as she finished up.
"Oh, Sif." Volstagg's voice was full of anguish, and he reached out for her hand, unable to pull her into the hug that he wanted to. "I'm so sorry. Is there anything I can do?"
"You're already doing it, you're here, you came to get me." She was finally able to look away from the dashboard and meet his eyes. "I just want to go home, except this is Mom's night out playing cards with the neighbours, which means the house is empty, and I don't really want to be by myself in an empty house right now. But I also don't want to have to ask her to come home, because that means I would have to tell her why, and I can't go over it again so soon. I'll tell her tomorrow; I'll have to because of the police involvement, but I just want to forget about it for the rest of the night. I just want to sit down and be quiet and watch a movie or something."
"You know you're always welcome at our place, but I'm afraid I can't promise that quiet. Things are pretty chaotic in the evening getting four kids washed up and ready for bed."
"Yeah, no." Sif thought for a moment, glancing at her watch. She just needed to kill a couple of hours, her mom would be home by then and Sif would have had time to regain her composure and maybe they'd watch something on TV together and then she could take a bath and then head to bed early. But in the meantime...she thought of Thor and Loki's house, where she'd spent so much time over the summer, swimming and playing frisbee outside and darts and board games inside and watching TV or doing puzzles in the den, their parents warm and welcoming from the start. Their house had very much come to feel like a second home to her, and she knew that if she told Loki that she just wanted to watch a movie quietly together with him, he'd be fine with that.
She pulled her hand free from Volstagg's and took out her phone. "I think I'd like to go over to Loki's; I'm going to call and see if he's home."
Loki answered promptly and informed her that not only would he be delighted if she came over, but that Thor had taken Jane out on a date, so they could have the den to themselves to watch whatever she wanted. Also, that his mom had made a peach cobbler and it was a good thing she was coming over tonight because between his father and Thor, the rest of it would probably be gone by tomorrow. Sif smiled at this mental image, and promised she'd be over soon. One of the reasons Frigga was so fond of baking, she thought, was that the menfolk in her family were all very appreciative of her efforts and made sure to tell her that.
"That's good," Volstagg nodded when she told him she was welcome to come over. "Do you want to stop at your place first, drop off your bike and gym things?
"Yeah, I think so. I can walk home from there."
"It'll be dark by then."
"There's streetlights, and house lights, and I can use my phone's flashlight if needed. I do go out after dark, you know."
"Just pointing it out," said Volstagg mildly, and Sif knew that it was because of what had happened, and -- yeah, fair, if Loki offered, she wouldn't object to him walking her home. At her house, they got her motorcycle out of the van and Sif put it in the garage, then ran inside to drop off her duffel bag and leave a note where her mom would see it when she came home saying that she was at Loki's. After that it was just a short ride to Loki's house, located on the next street over in her subdivision, where the porch light was on and Loki was watching for her out the living room window and throwing open the front door for her as soon as he saw her get out of Volstagg's van. Volstagg got out too, though, and came around and enveloped her in a bear hug before she could escape him.
"If that Haldor ever comes near you again," he said in a low voice, "Just let me know and I will rip his balls off for you."
Sif choked on a laugh and hugged him back tightly. "I'll remember that."
Volstagg dropped a kiss on the top of her head and stepped back, giving her a wink. "Can't have anyone threatening my very best babysitter, now can I?"
"I'll sic you on him if he becomes a problem," promised Sif. "But perhaps just a threat would do? I doubt Hildegund would be pleased if you ended up in jail."
"Hm, true. Very well, I can do threats." Volstagg looked like he was enjoying the thought of being able to terrify the shit out of anyone who dared lay their hands on her. "Now go on, your boyfriend's waiting."
Sif grinned, the fact that she had a boyfriend who was gorgeous and intelligent and funny and incredibly sweet still novel enough that she couldn't believe how lucky she was.
"Look after her, lad," Volstagg called to Loki as Sif walked up the front path to join him.
"Always!" Loki called back. "Thanks for bringing her over."
Volstagg raised a hand in acknowledgment as he got into his van, backing out of the driveway as Sif reached Loki and turned to watch him leave.
"Come on in," Loki said, holding the door open for her.
Sif followed him into the kitchen and took her jacket off, draping it over a chair. "So, you mentioned a peach cobbler?"
Loki grinned and got it out of the refrigerator, taking off the plastic wrap that covered it and getting out a plate and utensils and a spatula, cutting off a generous slice and lifting it onto the plate to warm up in the microwave. "Help yourself to whatever's in the fridge to drink," he said.
Sif snagged the bottle of black cherry pop that always seemed to be on hand since Frigga had discovered it was her favourite flavour and sat down at the kitchen table as Frigga herself came into the room and smiled at her.
"Hello, dear, I heard you come in and thought I'd say hello. Odin and I will be in the living room if you need anything. Do you know what movie you'll be watching?"
"Haven't decided yet," said Sif. "Something light." She took her first bite of the warm cobbler. "Mm, good."
"I'm glad you like it; let me know if you'd like the recipe. You can use either fresh or canned peaches."
"Wait till Mom starts making all her apple recipes," said Loki cheerfully. "You can come over one day and help peel."
"I'd like that," Sif said honestly. She had already been drawn into a couple of cookie and pie-making days over the summer and it had been a lot of fun; having multiple pairs of hands to pitch in had made everything go a lot faster and less like work. And she had always gotten sent home with a share of the results.
"I'll teach you how to make all of Loki's favourites," said Frigga, her eyes twinkling. "You know what they say, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach."
"Mom!" Loki protested. "Sif doesn't have to cook for me for me to -- " He caught himself, and changed what he was going to say. "-- like her." And then felt like a specimen under a microscope as two pairs of interested eyes fixed on him. He flushed.
"Of course not," Frigga soothed. "But being able to make delicious food is a skill everyone should have; why do you think I brought you boys up to know your way around a kitchen?"
"Because we were always hanging around hoping for handouts anyway?" asked Loki mischievously.
"That's true; you were," their mother said fondly. "And if you were going to be underfoot, I thought you might as well learn to be useful."
Sif grinned; imagining a small Loki and Thor standing on stools measuring out ingredients and mixing cookie dough.
"All right, I'll leave you two to your movie. Enjoy yourselves." Frigga thought of adding "but not too much", but decided not to tease them any further. She certainly didn't want to discourage wherever their relationship was headed; if she was right about what she thought Loki had been about to say, she couldn't have been more pleased. Since Sif had come into their lives, Loki had simply been radiating happiness, and smiling a lot more than he had in recent years. Confident that she could trust her son to behave appropriately when alone with Sif, she went to rejoin her husband in the living room.
"So, something light, you said." Loki leaned back against the counter. "What do you want to watch? A comedy? Action adventure? Rom com?"
"Hmm," mused Sif, letting him know she was thinking. She was already feeling better, but she wanted something fun, something that didn't require too much thinking or paying attention to the plot. She mentally considered and discarded several possibilities, then hit on one that felt just right. "George of the Jungle." She pointed her fork at him. "I haven't seen that since I was a kid."
"George George George, George of the Jungle," Loki chanted, "Watch out for that tree!" He grinned. "Good choice. I'm pretty sure we kept that DVD. I remember Mom liking it as much as Thor and I did."
Sif smirked, unsurprised. "Did you and Thor used to play at being George, or any kind of Tarzan character?"
"Of course, although Thor was far more over-the-top about it, lots of chest-beating and yelling and all that. But the park near where we used to live in the city had a really cool play structure that included ropes for climbing or swinging on, so yeah, we were living our best monkey lives there for a while. And of course we had our drums, if it was round and made a good thumping noise we turned it into a drum. Coffee cans, oatmeal canisters, the tupperware bowls from the kitchen, you name it. We used to drive Dad crazy; he'd come home from work wanting peace and quiet and we'd be drumming away like there was no tomorrow. Or we'd trade off, one of us drumming and one of us dancing; I thought we were quite good actually," said Loki loftily. "Mother said we were."
"I'm sure you were," said Sif, grinning as she finished off her slice of cobbler and rose to put the plate in the sink. She made a mental note to ask Frigga if there was any video footage of one of the boys leaping about while his brother played a drum -- and she was sure there must be -- because she would pay good money to see that. "Sounds like you had some pretty good times growing up."
"Yeah, we did. Ready to go watch?" He cocked his head at her.
"Lead on." She took a last swig of pop before putting the cap back on and taking the bottle with her as she followed him out of the kitchen and into the cosy pine-paneled den. She glanced over at the table where there usually was a jigsaw puzzle in progress and managed to put in two pieces by the time that Loki had found the DVD and popped it into the player. She joined him on the worn couch in front of the TV, wasting no time in snuggling up against his side. Loki promptly wrapped an arm around her and pressed play.
It was good, just what she needed, and she got caught up in the movie and the feel of Loki beside her, forgetting what had happened earlier. When the credits were rolling, Loki picked the DVD case up and scanned the information on it.
"What are you looking for?" she asked, lazily, her boots pulled off and her feet drawn up on the sofa.
"The year this was made, compared to my mom's age. Thor wasn't even born yet, and my mom..." he thought. "I don't think she and Dad were even married yet. Engaged, maybe? Dating, at least."
"Are you realising your mother probably saw this when it first came out and might have enjoyed it for the -- ah -- charms of its leading man years before she had any little boys to watch it with?" teased Sif, amused.
"I am," replied Loki, looking mildly scandalised in the way of small children realising their teachers had lives outside of the classroom. He picked up his phone and called his mother, not wishing to yell in Sif's ear or leave their shared couch just yet.
"Hello, sweetheart, did you finish your movie?"
"We did, and I was just wondering, is the reason you never minded watching George of the Jungle with me and Thor because you had a crush on Brendan Fraser?"
Frigga's startled laugh was loud enough that Sif could hear her.
"Not Brendan, no, but George? Yes. That movie was very much designed for the female gaze. That scene with the horse -- "
"Yes, yes," said Loki testily, "Sif was grinning like an idiot during that part as well. But weren't you dating Father at the time the movie was released? Or engaged? Did you two go see it together?"
"We did. I think it was probably more my choice than his, but in that case I would have let him choose the next movie that we went out to see."
"How does that work?" exclaimed Loki, the words out of his mouth before he realised he was going to say them. "Not the taking turns choosing a movie, but being attracted to someone else when you're dating, or engaged, or married?"
"You're allowed to look, if you're in a relationship that's based on trust. There are so many attractive people in the world, as long as it stops at looking, and you make sure your partner knows that they're the only one you want in your bed at night, then it's fine."
"Mm." Loki sounded uncertain. He heard his father say something in the background.
"Your father says that you, however, should not take anyone to your bed because you're too young and he's not ready to be a grandfather."
Loki snorted. "Duly noted, but condoms exist, you know." And then his eyes widened and he clamped his mouth shut, mortified that he had just said that to his mother, while sitting next to Sif. He liked the place their relationship was in, and didn't want her to feel that he wanted more yet, or that he was expecting it. He glanced sideways at her, and was relieved to see that she looked like she was trying to not laugh.
"I do, and I'm glad you do too; shall I relay that remark to your father?"
"No, that's not necessary," said Loki hastily. "Just reassure him that I have every intention of enjoying a child-free college experience. And now I am going to hang up before I embarrass myself further in front of my date. Talk to you later." He hung up the phone.
"Just so you know," said Sif, close enough to have heard Frigga's words, "There is no one that I'd rather be with than you right now."
"Same," said Loki, and his gaze dropped to her lips as his head tilted in invitation.
Sif closed the distance between them, tangling one hand in his hair and kissing him without hesitation, feeling his one hand settle at the small of her back, the other cradling the back of her neck. Loki was an amazing kisser; apparently playing the flute taught you how to use your mouth and lips really well. Time melted away as Loki drove every thought from her head, until, as they shifted to find a more comfortable position, his grip shifted to her lower arm in a bid to urge her onto his lap, and Sif flinched back, unable to completely stifle a cry of pain.
Loki immediately let her go. "What is it? Did I hurt you?"
"Not you. Sorry. I just got some bruises today at the gym, and you pressed down on one." Sif rubbed her right arm lightly.
"Are you all right? Can I see? So I know where they are?"
Sif hesitated, then unbuttoned the cuff of her flannel shirt and rolled it up. They'd darkened in the last couple of hours, and stood out unmistakably against her tanned skin, five evenly spaced circles.
Loki very gently took her hand in his and turned her forearm so he could see them all. Fingerprints, he thought. She'd been at the gym, not her martial arts studio. There was no reason someone should have grabbed her hard enough to leave bruises on her arm. Something fierce and protective rose up inside him. "What happened?"
Sif rolled her sleeve back down, not wanting to go over it again but remembering Frigga's words about a good relationship being built on trust. "Remember that guy that was hassling Jane the other day at college?"
"Haldor. Yes."
"He was waiting for me when I left the gym this evening. He started a fight, I ended it."
"I don't suppose I can look forward to seeing him with a spectacular black eye Monday, can I?" Loki asked hopefully. Not that Haldor was in any of his classes, but he could keep a look out for him around campus, or go and watch Thor practice.
Sif smiled. "No, but I did knee him in the groin and when he started to fold, landed a good uppercut to his jaw. Although...I'm not sure if he'll be back, or for how long."
Loki was pleased by her recital but his brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"
She met his eyes. "I called the cops, charged him with assault. Not sure if that might lead to a suspension or something."
Startled, Loki opened his mouth to say something -- but then closed it again, thinking first as he ran his eyes over Sif. She didn't seem to be seriously hurt anywhere, but that she'd involved the cops and pressed charges meant that something more serious than a casual fight had happened.
"I'm all right, truly," she assured him, guessing what he was thinking. "A couple more bruises and that's it. He definitely took more damage."
"Yet you called the cops? Not that I have a problem with that, but...did something else happen? Did he threaten you?"
Damn Loki for being so perceptive, she thought with annoyance. "I called the cops because he heavily implied that he wanted to rape me." Sif said bluntly, sick to death of having to talk about it. "And men like him need to learn that women aren't going to take shit like that lying down." She grimaced. "Bad choice of words."
"He didn't -- are you -- " Loki's shock was giving way to fury. "If he touched you -- "
"Nothing beyond a few gropes that made his intentions clear, if his words weren't enough. I'm fine," she said, and realised she meant it. "I was kind of shaken up earlier, but I'm feeling a lot better now. Being here with you helped a lot."
"I'm glad," He reached out to stroke her hair. "Is there anything else I can do? And did the cops say what was going to happen to Haldor?"
"Unless he's already got a record of previous offenses, he'll probably get off with a fine and probation. Maybe have to take an anger management class or something like that. The cops will get in touch with me to keep me updated or if I need to testify in court, which they think unlikely." Her phone rang, and she picked it up and answered it after a glance at the caller ID.
"Hi, Mom, did you get my note? Are you home now?" She listened and nodded. "Okay, I'll be home shortly. See you soon." She hung up.
"That was my mom, I left her a note saying to call me when she got home from the neighbour's, because I didn't really want to hang out alone after what happened. So thank you for having me over. But do you think you could walk me home?"
"Yes, of course!" Loki scrambled to his feet, taking the DVD out of the player and shutting everything else off while Sif finished off her pop. She collected her jacket from the kitchen while Loki told his parents he was going to walk Sif home, and they went outside, Loki snagging his own hoodie from the front closet as they did so. It was dark out by now, but a full moon added its light to the scene and the night air was pleasant enough that they took the long way around, walking hand in hand, instead of cutting through a couple of people's yards as they tended to do during the day. When they got to Sif's house, he turned to her on her doorstep.
"May I kiss you good night?"
"You may."
He took her face between his hands and kissed her at first gently, and then a little more thoroughly when she grabbed hold of the front of his sweatshirt and kept him from pulling away too soon.
They were interrupted by the sound of the front door opening, Sif reluctantly pulling away to glare at her mother.
"I thought I'd save you having to get your key out," Gna said cheerfully. "Hello, Loki, thank you for walking Sif home."
"It was my pleasure," Loki said, keeping his aplomb and a grip on one of Sif's hands, not so easily dismissed. "Shall I tell my parents you said hello?"
"Please do." Then, accepting that they wanted a few more moments to say goodbye, she smiled indulgently. "Don't stay out there too long, Sif, it's late."
"I'll be right in," Sif promised. Her mother nodded and retreated inside the house.
Loki swung her hand gently. "Got any plans for tomorrow?"
"I've got some homework I need to work on, but that can wait till after supper. If you've got the afternoon free, do you want to go to the cider mill? It's opening weekend, and it'll be crazy crowded, but sometimes that's part of the experience, y'know?"
"I'd love to," Loki said happily. "Should I mention it to Thor?"
"Yeah, if we want to bring a couple of gallons of cider home, we'll want his pick-up. And they've also got donuts, and caramel apples, and fudge, and some hiking trails through the woods we can go on."
"it sounds perfect. And if I bring some fudge home for my dad, I will win so many points."
"Tell your parents if they want to go, it'll be less busy during the week when kids are in school."
"All right, I will, and I'm looking forward to it. Give me a call tomorrow when you're ready to go. Or for any other reason, at any time," he said seriously. "If you want to talk, or need help, you can always call me. You know that, right?"
A lump rose in Sif's throat, and she stepped forward and hugged him tightly. "Yeah. Yeah, I know that. And the same goes for you, too. You can call anytime."
She stepped back, and Loki reluctantly let her go. "I know." He glanced towards the living room window, where he thought her mother probably was, but the drapes had been drawn for the night. "You'd better go in now, before your mom comes back to check on us." He pressed one last kiss to her forehead. "I'll see you tomorrow. Sweet dreams, Sif."
"Sweet dreams, Loki." She went inside, and waved as he glanced back as he went down the front walk to the street. She locked up and turned to see her mother watching her from the couch in the living room, some show playing on the TV. Sif yawned suddenly, and her mother laughed.
"Tired?"
"Yeah, I think I'm going to go take a bath and make an early night of it. Did you have a good time next door?"
"I did; did you have a good time at Loki's?" The look on Gna's face made it clear that she already knew the answer to this.
"I did." Sif was glad that her mother hadn't asked about her whole day, or her time at the gym.
"I'm glad; enjoy your bath, darling."
Sif nodded and collected some clean clothes from her bedroom and went into the bathroom, locking the door. She stripped off down to her sports bra, and glared at the bruises purpling her skin, more than Loki had seen. It was different than getting bruised from hard sparring, or from a martial arts competition. Those were expected, and gained in combat with other honourable warriors. These were reminders that someone had put their hands on her that she hadn't given permission to, and she took out her tube of arnica cream to apply after the bath, wanting them gone as soon as possible. The twin sets of finger and thumb prints on her forearms would be in full view tomorrow at the cider mill unless she wore a long-sleeved shirt, and she didn't want to feel that she should have to to hide them unless the weather warranted it. She hadn't done anything wrong, but she didn't want to deal with any well-meaning questions about how she'd gotten them or if she needed any help. Her lips thinned with anger. Well, let them ask, she'd tell them exactly who'd done it. She'd love it if Haldor tried to get a date or a job and couldn't because she'd ruined his reputation. She started the bath water running as she finished undressing, but her earlier good mood had been replaced by irritation, and she got out the box of bath fizzers that her mom had given her for her birthday, feeling that she deserved something a little special today and choosing a sweet pea one from the remaining balls. She dropped it into the water and got in after it, enjoying the feel of it fizzing against her skin as she adjusted the water temperature to pleasantly hot and shut the faucet off, relaxing as she slid down until the back of her head rested against the edge of the tub, breathing in the sweet fragrance. Instead of dwelling on having to tell more people (her mother, at least, and Thor if he saw the bruises) about the attack, she thought about what she was looking forward to about tomorrow.
Introducing Thor and Loki to the cider mill on what was supposed to be another day of perfect weather for it. They could have gone on the hiking trails during the summer, but past experience had taught her that the woods were thick with mosquitos in the usual humid summer heat, and without the lure of the stream as someplace closer than the beach to cool down, it hadn't felt worth it, not when she now had friends even closer with a brand new swimming pool in their backyard. She smiled as she remembered the day one photo after another had begun arriving on her phone in rapid succession. One of the sign in front of the local pool store. Then one of Loki with the broadest smile she'd ever seen standing in front of a model pool, half filled with water and various floatie toys, along with the message Guess what? A picture of Thor with an equally big grin on his face holding a large inflatable alligator and a pool skimmer had followed.
She had texted back both of them. What's going on?, excitement filling her as she guessed the answer but wanting confirmation.
WE'RE GETTING A POOL!!!, Loki had sent back, along with a picture of their parents standing at a counter with a store employee and several bottles of pool chemicals.
A photo had arrived from Thor showing a weighted ring diving game. ?  He had asked.
Waste of money, Sif had texted back. You can use plastic clothespins.
The next photo, from Loki, had shown a basketball type hoop that could be attached to the side of the pool, along with another question mark. Maybe?  She had sent back. How much is it?
There had been a pause, then a price had appeared followed by Maybe if we find it on sale somewhere. Sif remembered texting her agreement, thinking it was something that might have been worth the investment if the boys had been ten years younger. She remembered going over to their house to watch the pool being installed, the three of them sitting on top of the picnic table on their patio as they'd watched the walls of the pool rise with interest, remembered the anticipation building as the garden hose had been fed over the side of the pool and the water had been turned on full blast. She remembered their excitement dimming as they'd watched how very very slowly the water level was rising, and having to accept the fact that it was going to be a couple of days before the pool was ready for swimming, Odin informing them that once it was full they'd have to add the chemicals to sanitise the water and then wait another 24 hours after that before they would be allowed to go in.
They'd sought solace and distraction at the lake the next day, but they'd all been more than ready when the all clear had been given on the morning of the fourth day. Sif remembered donning her bikini and a cover-up and stuffing anything else she might need in her beach bag and heading over right after breakfast, and not coming home until dinnertime, waterlogged and sunbaked and happy, her skin smelling pleasantly of chlorine. She remembered days of fun and friendship, and evenings floating lazily around the pool on a raft, full from a cook-out, the smell of the barbeque grill still lingering on the air and the sound of her mother talking with Frigga and Odin on the patio, Loki on his raft bumped up next to hers, their hands joined together and hidden between them as the sun slowly set and the mosquitos came out in full force and drove them back under the water until her mother had called for her to come out and go home with her.
She felt herself calm, and center, and turned onto her side to let the heat of the water warm up her front. It had been a good summer, and she thought about what they had to look forward to in the fall. The cider mill, and scuffling through fallen leaves as they hiked through the woods. Going to Thor's home football games to cheer him on, snug in hoodies and sweaters and flannel-lined jeans, with a thermos full of mulled cider or pumpkin spice coffee and a plaid blanket to share between her and Loki. Halloween. The college had an annual masquerade ball to celebrate which had been quite good last year; Fandral had liberated some realistic-looking prop swords from the theater department and some costuming bits and pieces and they had dragged Hogun into it and they'd all gone as the Three Musketeers. She wondered if Loki would want to do themed costumes and tried to picture what he'd look good as. She thought of his flute -- the Pied Piper, maybe? But then who was she supposed to be, a giant rat?
She frowned and sat up to grab the soap bar, washing briskly and getting out of the tub to dry off as the water drained. She'd have to call Loki, suggest he start thinking about it so they had time to get a decent costume together. She got into her pajamas and warm fuzzy socks and sat down on her bed and texted him. Do u want to do matching Halloween costumes this year?
For what? he asked cautiously, his reply soon arriving. Aren't we a bit too old to go trick-or-treating?
Masquerade ball at college. Not quite as fancy as it sounds but costume is required. And last year Jane and Darcy's dorm was giving out candy and inviting people they liked in for stuff like apple pie and pizza and board games. So u wanna dress comfy, nothing too restricting.
Hmm. Pirates?
We could, but Fandral and I did that year before last.
Pass, then. Rock stars?
Too much like regular clothing unless we do disco or glam. Not feeling it.
There was a pause. Hang on, let me go find something.
A couple of minutes later a picture arrived on her phone. It was the front of one of those clothing pattern packets they sold at the fabric store, she realised. The drawing on the envelope showed two young people, the guy wearing what she thought was called a doublet and hose and the girl in a pretty but comfortable-looking dress, the skirt wide enough to allow for free movement. Renaissance Lovers, the envelope proclaimed. Loki would look fantastic in something like this, she thought, his long legs shown off to advantage in the hose, the doublet emphasizing the breadth of his shoulders and the narrowness of his hips.
I'm listening, she typed.
U wanna do something like this?
Not usually a dress person, but if we can find something like this? Yeah. You'd look hot.
We don't have to look for it. Another picture arrived, with Loki wearing what was obviously a costume based on the pattern, the doublet forest green with accents of gold and his legs encased in close-fitting ivory tights that left little to the imagination. Sif enlarged the photo, her eyes wide. Despite seeing Loki in nothing but swim trunks for a good many days of this past summer, the tights were way more revealing. I played Romeo in my 11th grade school play, he typed. Still have the outfit.
I am looking respectfully, she sent back. V. good look on u. Is that top velvet?
Yep. My mom made it.
Holy shit. It had embroidery on it, too, Sif saw. I'll never find anything that looks as good.
Told u you don't have to. My mom can make the dress for u.
Loki, u can't ask her -- look I'm gonna call u. She closed out the text and pressed his number. When he answered, she went on. "Loki, you can't ask your mom to make me a Halloween costume like I'm five years old! A dress like that would take time, and effort, and money!"
"She'd be happy to do it," he insisted. "She always made costumes for me and Thor if we couldn't find what we wanted."
"But you're her children, not me! I'm a grown woman, I can buy my own dress to wear."
"Not something nice," Loki said stubbornly. "It'll be cheap-looking polyester crap."
Sif couldn't argue with that, but of course no one wanted to spend a lot of money on a costume that would only be worn for one day. But maybe Fandral could borrow something from the theater department again that could work.
"She made the dress for my co-star in the play, and she wasn't anything like the family friend that you are," Loki argued.
Sif felt warmed by being thought of as a friend to the whole family, and not just Loki's girlfriend. And truly she felt that way, with the way she had been welcomed into their lives and made to feel at home. She wavered.
"Is your mom still up that you could ask her? And make it clear that it's your idea, not mine, and I'm not expecting anything!"
"Yes, of course, I'll be right back!"
Loki sounded like an eager puppy that had just been promised a treat, and since he didn't hang up, she could hear his and Frigga's voices in the background a few moments later. And then Frigga came on the line, her voice warm and enthusiastic.
"I would love to make you a dress for Halloween, Sif, it's no trouble at all, really. I'm already familiar with the pattern and the only finicky part is cutting all the pieces to size. The sewing's not difficult at all and the embellishments are the fun part, I like having something to do with my hands when I'm watching TV in the evenings."
Sif could just picture Frigga beaming at her, and Loki looking just as happy to have his confidence in his mother being proved justified. How could she say no? "If you're sure -- " she began.
"I am."
"Then I accept, and thank you, but I want to pay for it. All the materials, and whatever you think is a fair price for your labour."
"That's fine," said Frigga after a moment of silence. "There's always coupons and sales, we'll find a nice piece of fabric at a good price. Light wool, I think, would be most versatile for this time of year, although a heavier brushed cotton might look nice as well, something that could work with both cooler and warmer weather depending on what you wear underneath. An autumn colour, perhaps? Russet? Or a lighter shade of green to coordinate with Loki's doublet? Well, we'll see what they have when we get to the fabric store. Loki told me you're going to the cider mill tomorrow; what about Sunday? I could come over after lunch and take your measurements, and then we can go shopping?"
"I...um, yeah, all right," Sif said, somewhat dazed at the speed with which this was moving along. She supposed Loki had been right in thinking his mother would enjoy making the dress, and she remembered the first time they'd met, and Frigga mentioning they would have liked to have had a daughter, too.
"Excellent. It's not going to take a whole month to make, of course, but better to get started early just in case anything comes up later."
"Like what?" Sif heard herself asking.
"Machine could need servicing?" Frigga suggested after a moment of thinking. "Which reminds me, I don't know where I'd get it done around here. But I expect they'd know at the fabric store, if they don't have someone there themselves that works on them; I'll have to ask."
"Oh. Okay."
"Or someone could get sick," Frigga continued on blithely. "We're generally a healthy lot around here, but cold and flu season is coming up, and I wouldn't want to be working on your dress when I'm contagious with something."
"No," said Sif. "Of course not." This was what it must feel like to be caught up in an undertow, she thought, and had the sudden image of Loki standing there grinning, listening to them. "Well then, I'll see you Sunday. Call me whenever you want to go."
"I will, darling, and I'll look forward to it. Loki's gesturing for me to hand back his phone, so I'll say good night to you now."
"Good night, sleep tight," Sif said automatically, and then felt a bit silly for adding that until Frigga added "Don't let the bedbugs bite" without missing a beat. Sif grinned and then Loki took his phone back.
"Hah!" He exclaimed triumphantly. "What did I tell you? We are going to look great together. And I asked Thor about the cider mill, and he said he'd be happy to drive us, and he's already asked Jane to come along as well, if that's okay."
"Yeah, sure. Are you going to come by and pick me up?"
Yeah; early afternoon sometime all right with you? I don't think any of us want to get up early on a Saturday morning."
"Sounds good. Call me before you come over, so I can get ready." She heard the sound of his footsteps, presumably returning to his bedroom.
"Will do. I suppose we should say good night now."
"Probably." She didn't hang up and neither did he. She gave a little huff of laughter. "What's that quote about parting is such sweet sorrow?"
"Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow, That I shall say good night till it be morrow." Loki's voice went soft, caressing, and Sif swallowed, wishing he were in this room right now with her.
"Yeah, that." She made another self-deprecating noise. "I don't know why it's so hard to hang up when I'll be seeing you tomorrow. It's just...I'm so glad you moved to town. I can't imagine my life without you in it anymore."
"I feel the same way," Loki said softly.
Sif took a deep breath, words wanting to bubble up in her throat, but they were the sort of words that were best said face-to-face for the very first time. Perhaps besides the stream in the woods tomorrow; she could ask Jane to take Thor off in a different direction so she and Loki could have some privacy. Jane would understand.
"Sif?"
"Yeah?"
"The sooner we hang up and go to bed, the sooner tomorrow will come."
Sif snorted. "Did your mother used to tell you that on Christmas Eve?"
"I seem to remember it mostly being aimed at Thor, but yes. So," he said briskly. "Since the hour waxes late and we must practice at being sensible adults, good night, Sif, and sweet dreams. I will see you tomorrow."
"Good night, Loki," said Sif, still smiling. "And sweet dreams. I'm looking forward to it. Bye." She finally hung up, putting her phone on charge before going to seek a bedtime snack and to spend a little time with her mother before going to bed. To get it over with, and not wanting anything to spoil tomorrow, she told her mother briefly of what had happened, but it was already feeling distant, the love and support of her friends surrounding her like a protective armour. She reassured her mother that she was fine, and meant it, and they watched the opening segment of the late night talk show together before Sif announced that she was turning in, rising and stretching with a yawn. Her mother stood up as well, and gave her a hug. It was perhaps a little tighter than usual, but Sif didn't mind, nor did she mind it when her mother followed her into her room and tucked her into bed with a kiss and a "Good night; I love you."
"Love you too," Sif replied, enjoying the feel of the blanket tucked snugly behind her back in the way she could never manage to do by herself. The ritual was not quite the every night thing that it had once been, but her mother always seemed to know when she needed it. "G'night."
Her mother turned out the light as she left, closing the door most of the way behind her but leaving it just ajar enough that Sif could hear the faint murmur of the television set, the sound turned down lower so as not to disturb her, the sliver of low light coming in from the hall if she looked that way comforting as well. She was asleep in minutes, and if she dreamed, she did not remember it when she woke the next morning, feeling rested but enjoying the comfort of her bed too much to rise immediately, thinking of the day ahead, thinking of Loki. Anticipation filled her, and she threw back the sheets and bounced to her feet, opening her window and letting in the fresh morning air. It felt like it was going to be a perfect day to spend outside, and she began picking out the clothes she wanted to wear and throwing them on her bed.
Dreams were all well and good, but real life was even better, and she had every intention of enjoying hers to its fullest.

A/N: Had this basically done back in July, but I didn't feel the tone of the beginning was quite right and it bothered me enough not to post it. Finally figured out what needed adjusting and hope it's no less enjoyable for the wait.

7 Stories for Genderfluid Visibility Week!
Tumblr media
This week is Genderfluid Visibility Week, so the Duck Prints Press rec list contributors present: 7 of our favorite stories with genderfluid characters! Note that, in a lot of settings, it wouldn’t make sense for these characters to label themselves with the words we use now, so it can be challenging to identify characters who are genderfluid. For several of the characters on this list, their gender identities are open to interpretation, and while the Press contributors who suggested these books have interpreted them as genderfluid, it would also be valid to interpret these characters as (for example) non-binary or trans. If you read these books and didn’t feel the character was genderfluid – we support you! But they spoke to us as examples of genderfluid characters, and so we’ve included them.

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman
In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin’s son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki–son of a giant–blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator.
Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds and delves into the exploits of deities, dwarfs, and giants. Once, when Thor’s hammer is stolen, Thor must disguise himself as a woman–difficult with his beard and huge appetite–to steal it back. More poignant is the tale in which the blood of Kvasir – the most sagacious of gods – is turned into a mead that infuses drinkers with poetry. The work culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and rebirth of a new time and people.
Through Gaiman’s deft and witty prose emerge these gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.

Rust in the Root by Justina Ireland
It is 1937, and Laura Ann Langston lives in an America divided—between those who work the mystical arts and those who do not. Ever since the Great Rust, a catastrophic event that blighted the arcane force called the Dynamism and threw America into disarray, the country has been rebuilding for a better future. And everyone knows the future is industry and technology—otherwise known as Mechomancy—not the traditional mystical arts.
Laura disagrees. A talented young mage from Pennsylvania, Laura hopped a portal to New York City on her seventeenth birthday with hopes of earning her mage’s license and becoming something more than a rootworker.
But four months later, she’s got little to show for it other than an empty pocket and broken dreams. With nowhere else to turn, Laura applies for a job with the Bureau of the Arcane’s Conservation Corps, a branch of the US government dedicated to repairing the Dynamism so that Mechomancy can thrive. There she meets the Skylark, a powerful mage with a mysterious past, who reluctantly takes Laura on as an apprentice.
As they’re sent off on their first mission together into the heart of the country’s oldest and most mysterious Blight, they discover the work of mages not encountered since the darkest period in America’s past, when Black mages were killed for their power—work that could threaten Laura’s and the Skylark’s lives, and everything they’ve worked for.
