TW: Semi-angst, language, and aged-up characters

When you guys fight it's usually Cartman's fault. He'll bring any sensitive topic to the surface to get back at you. Whether that be something embarrassing or traumatizing he doesn't care. If it makes you angry, that's what matters at the moment.

Whenever the fight gets out of hand the others will step in. Kyle yelling at Cartman for being a dick, Stan telling you that it'll be okay, and Kenny giving you hugs or rubbing your back. This happened at once a week maybe, twice.

After being confronted and proven wrong Cartman runs home. When he reaches his house he cries for hours on end. He cares about you, however, he also knows some things were uncalled for. He shouldn't have brought up such hurtful things. Likewise, Kyle shouldn't have jumped in.

You sometimes hang out with the rest of the group to cool down. They all give their advice and try to help. Some of the advice is awful but you still appreciate the effort. The first thing Kyle always says is, “kill the fat ass.” Of course, you won't, but what the fuck Kyle.

Cartman will sneak out of his house later to see you. When you hear him throwing little rocks at your window you let him in. He apologizes over and over again. Truth be told, he feels horrible for what he did. If you forgive him Cartman will never bring up those subjects again. He loves you a lot and fights happen in relationships.

Kyle and you don't fight a lot. On the downside, the fights always happen because of his mom. She and you aren't on good terms. She's very open about how she thinks you aren't good enough for her son. That being said, you bump heads more than anyone.

You wish Kyle would stand up for you. Instead, he just sits back emotionless. He thinks you are good enough for him he just doesn't want to argue with his mom. He's always been a momma's boy and doesn't dare go against her word. You love him but you wish he would at least talk to her.

In the middle of a fight, you give up. It's always the same things coming from him. “What am I supposed to say?” and “she's my mom y/n I can't be fucking rude!” as soon as you try to leave he stops you. An argument with Kyle has never lasted more than twenty minutes. Either he apologizes or you do.

“Wait, y/n, I'm sorry,” Kyle said hugging you. “I'll try to talk to her.” most times you wouldn't believe what he said. Yet, he actually did speak to his mom. (with encouragement from Cartman and Stan) the next time you saw Shelia she didn't say a single word to you. Whatever Kyle did you were grateful. No words were better than being told you weren't enough.

It takes a lot for you and Kenny to fight. Like, A LOT. Whatever pushes that last button causes you to yell at him. Perhaps, it was the fact he was okay with how badly people treated him. Maybe, it was because of how much you disliked his shitty parents. Something finally made you upset to the point it turned into a fight.

Kenny doesn't get heated until you question his love. He cares deeply for you, so hearing such things are bound to hurt. He's worked many hours to give you gifts. He's even stolen items just to see that beautiful smile on your face. “What the hell do you mean I don't love you?!” he asked still muffled.

The boys watched in silence as you argued back and forth. It was almost weird to see it happening. Cartman, Stan, and Kyle just stared at each other questioning whether or not to stop the quarrel. I mean, it's not every day that something like this occurs.

You were fixing to walk away but just as you took a step Kenny died from a flying football. It felt unreal, but it was horrible to see him dead. You witnessed this all the time but that didn't mean it was easier. It was so unexpected Cartman even let out an audible gasp.

A couple of days later Kenny showed up back up to School. You were so happy to see him that you ran to hug the boy. “Oh, Kenny, I'm so sorry for fighting with you,” you said, burying your head in his shoulder. “I missed you so much.” Kenny hugged you back feeling the same way. Now, whenever you fight (which only happens at least three times a year) you always try to end it on good terms just in case.

Just like Kenny, it's very rare you two fight. Wendy is always the reason it does transpire. You've never liked her and she never liked you either. Stan and she used to have a thing for one another. You assume she still does based on how she acts. Sticking her nose in your relationship, flirting with your boyfriend, and even saying nasty things about you.

Stans made it very clear he doesn't like Wendy to you. You try to believe him but you still worry that maybe he's lying. Your worrying caused the fight to begin. He gets upset knowing you question his loyalty and feelings for you. A year and a half together he anticipated some trust.

Many hurtful things were said to both parties. Unlike Cartman, nothing traumatizing was brought up. Kyle will move Stan away to cool off and Kenny has you sit down. It takes a bit for you to calm down and realize your anxiety got the best of you. You go to find Stan right away and try to make amends. It feels icky knowing you should've listened to what he said.

Stan forgives you and apologizes as well. While you guys were separated he talked to Wendy. He made it obvious the feelings he once had for her were gone. It warmed your heart knowing he did that just to reassure you. As the days passed you began to trust him more and more. No one butted between you and him. If you ever get anxious again don't worry, he'll be there with open arms.

I hope you've been well! I wanted to reach out and first say that you inspired me many years ago to rescue a corgi! She was a grump, I think she may have taken her name (Elphaba) too literally. She recently crossed the rainbow bridge, but she was such fun and a joy. I hope our pups are playing together, somewhere peaceful.

I have a question unrelated to stumpy Corgis. I'm a veteran birth doula and an aspiring birth photographer! I've been trying to research cameras, lenses, and all sorts of technical stuff. I'm leaving towards purchasing the new Nikon ZF, because of the purported low-light capabilities.

Lenses are throwing me completely.

Do you have any guidance or resources to help a newbie like myself? Not really looking for an in-depth answer (I know how complicated things can get), but maybe a general push in the right direction?

My budget is pretty flexible, since I am an independent contractor the expense would be tallied towards my taxes. But that being said, maybe $1-3k? I know it's important to invest more into lenses!

Usually, I am in a hospital, and lighting is extremely variable. I would be shooting mostly in low-light before baby is born. During delivery and after there is usually a spotlight or fluorescent lighting. The low lighting is exactly why I was looking at the new ZF, but if you have suggestions on that too I'm happy to hear them!

It's very cramped when the baby is born, most medical and support staff are clustered around the laboring person.

Warning! A lot of birth photos will have baby crowning or blood. It's a messy business, so I don't want to trigger you if you're sensitive to those sorts of images.

I will not be able to be directly next to the laboring parent, more than likely I'll be a few feet away, possibly behind the parents or standing on a stool.

After the baby is born, I'll be able to get closer to both parents and baby!

I went way overboard on this response, as usual. I have decided I'm going to break it up into 3 parts.

First, an encyclopedia of lens terminology.

Second, a camera and lens buying guide.

Third, practical advice for shooting in cramped rooms with tricky lighting conditions.

While this will be geared towards the original ask, I think this could be helpful to a lot of people. So, let's learn about lenses!

Lenses throw everybody, just because there are so many options. It can be overwhelming to look at a picture like this and wonder what will suit you best.

It's a lot of pressure too, because lenses are more important than the camera in a lot of ways. Interchangeable lenses are probably the biggest advantage big cameras have over smartphones these days.

But I think I can help get you up to speed.

The following terms are photospeak you might hear in camera and lens reviews and if you aren't familiar with them, it can make it difficult to figure out what camera and lens to purchase.

I tried to put these in an order that makes sense, but some terms relate to other terms and you may have to read the list twice to make sure you understand how everything mushes together.

Froggie's Encyclopedia of Lens Terms

Lens Mount

Every camera has a specific lens mount. Sony calls theirs the E Mount. Nikon has the F Mount (older) and the Z Mount (mirrorless). So you need to make sure the lens you are looking at is compatible with the mount on your camera.

Mirrorless cameras all upgraded to a mount with a "short flange distance." Going without a mirror allows the lenses to be closer to the sensor.

Long story short... Short flange distance = easier lens design = sharper/lighter lenses.

However, if you want to use older DSLR lenses, there are adapters for Nikon and Canon that allow you to do that.

Aperture

"Aperture" is an opening at the front of the lens. It gets bigger to let in more light or smaller to restrict light.

Wider apertures have a shallower depth of field, causing blurry foregrounds and backgrounds outside the plane of focus. Smaller apertures expand the focus area to keep more stuff from being blurry, but they let in much less light and are difficult to use in dark environments.

Aperture can be a creative decision or it can be a technical decision or it can be a mix of both. If you need a blurry background, use a wider aperture. If you need everything in focus, use a smaller aperture. If you need more light in a dark scene, open it up.

F-stop

"F-stop" is a number representing how big the aperture is. A lower number is a bigger hole. Higher number is a smaller hole. It is helpful to memorize f-stops as they are not easily divisible. Cameras generally allow third stops, half stops, and full stops.

These are all a "full stop" apart.

Stop Down/Open Up

When someone says to "stop down" a lens, they are telling you to make the aperture smaller or use a higher f-stop number.

If they say to "open up" they are saying to make the hole bigger or lower the f-stop number.

Depth of Field (DoF)

Depth of field refers to how much of the photo is in focus. Things in front of the plane of focus will get blurrier and blurrier and things behind the plane of focus will get blurrier and blurrier. A shallow depth of field means only a tiny sliver of your image will be in focus. A deep depth of field means almost everything will be in focus.

The wider the aperture, the shallower the depth of field.

The smaller the aperture, the deeper the depth of field.

Focal Plane or Plane of Focus

The focal plane is the sharpest point within the depth of field. You can imagine an imaginary section of 3D space where things within the depth of field are sharp and things outside are blurry. The farther away from the focal plane, the blurrier they will get. But the focal plane is not always dead center of the depth of field.

Typically, at close distances, things will be sharp half in front of where you focused and half behind where you focused. As things get farther away, that changes to more 1/3 in front and 2/3 behind. The ratio changes even more at greater distances, but the 50-50 and 1/3-2/3 ratios are typically what photographers try to remember.

Shallow Depth of Field

The focal plane is something you need to be very aware of at close distances with a wide aperture—as the depth of field can end up as a tiny sliver.

Let's say you are only a few feet away from a baby and you have the aperture set at f/1.2. You focus on the nearest baby eye, and then you notice its ears and nose are out of focus.

The plane of focus and shallow depth of field are causing this issue. This might be a worthy compromise if you are in a dark room and your ISO is very high and you are worried about too much noise.

However, if you can use a flash or some kind of lighting, you can stop down your lens and increase that depth of field around the focal plane.

Bokeh

Bokeh is the quality of the blurriness. Some people are more obsessed with how good the blurry parts of the photo are more so than the in focus parts. Bokeh is typically judged by "bokeh balls" which are just out-of-focus lights in the background. While I like attractive bokeh balls as much as the next photographer, I will admit this is one of the sillier aspects of photography.

Field of View (FoV)/Angle of View

This is how much stuff you can fit in frame at a given distance. Wide angle lenses can fit more stuff in at a shorter distance and telephoto lenses can fill the frame with stuff that is farther away. The focal length of the lens determines the field of view. The focal length is designated by millimeters and the field of view by degrees.

Focal Length

Technically, this is "the distance between the lens's optical center and the camera's sensor."

In simpler terms, this is how you determine the field of view of a given lens.

A short focal length, like 10mm, will have a wider field of view. You have to be very close to your subject to fill the frame with them.

And a longer focal length, like 500mm, will allow you to fill the frame with your subject from farther distances.

Typically all lenses are designated by their focal length. If someone says, "Hand me the 50" they mean a 50mm lens.

35mm Equivalent

Not every camera has the same sized sensor. So when we talk about lenses, we need a reference to help us understand how a given lens will behave. A 50mm f/2.8 lens does not have the same field of view or depth of field when placed on different sensors. So, we need a standard for comparison.

The standard that is used is the "full frame" sensor which is roughly the same size as a 35mm piece of film.

Anything smaller is considered a "cropped sensor."

Those cropped sensor cameras have a "crop factor"—a simple multiplier that helps you understand how lenses compare. And when you use this multiplier it tells you the "35mm equivalent."

Confused yet? Yeah, sorry, it would be easier if camera manufacturers chose metrics that didn't change depending on the sensor, but this allows them to make their cameras and lenses seem more impressive in the marketing.

There are two main cropped sensors for ILCs. (Interchangeable lens cameras.) APS-C and Micro Four Thirds. They have a "crop factor" of 1.5x and 2x respectively. The Micro 4/3 sensor is half the size of Full Frame, therefore it has a 2x crop factor. And when you apply this crop factor to the aperture and focal length you can determine how a lens will behave.

For example, a 50mm f/2.8 lens on a micro 4/3 sensor would behave the same as a 100mm f/5.6 lens on a full frame—as 100mm is 2x 50mm and f/5.6 is 2 stops above f/2.8.

As you can see, the Micro 4/3 lens is not going to do as well in low light. The iPhone boasts an aperture of f/1.8 on its main lens, but when you figure out the 35mm equivalent, it's more like an f/8 lens.

I went to all the effort to explain this because it demonstrates that larger sensors allow you to work in cramped spaces with less light. If you want to use a 50mm in a hospital room, you probably can on a full frame. But on a Micro 4/3 you might need to be out in the hall because your lens is acting like it is 100mm. So the Zf would be a good choice in this regard.

Camera Shake

This is the bad kind of blurry. Humans are not tripods, so when you are handholding a lens, you need to make sure your shutter speed is fast enough to freeze the action of your image. Camera shake is very easy to control on wide angle lenses and very difficult to manage with telephoto lenses.

Reciprocal Rule

The reciprocal rule states that in order to get sharp photos without blurry camera shake, you must set your shutter speed to 1 over twice the focal length of your lens. So if you have a 100mm lens, you need to set your shutter speed at 1/200 to be safe.

This rule breaks down at a shutter speed of 1/50 if there is anything moving in your image. So if a dog is running or a car is driving by, it will have a motion trail, but at least it won't be due to your shaky hands.

Image Stabilization

This is a feature some lenses have that helps reduce camera shake. Image stabilization can counteract shaky hands and let you get sharp photos with a much slower shutter speed. Newer cameras have sensor stabilization which does the same thing. And if you pair up a stabilized sensor with a stabilized lens, it is almost as effective as using a tripod.

Stabilization is measured in stops. You might hear a lens has 4 stops of stabilization. That means you can handhold the lens and not get camera shake with a shutter speed 4 stops below the reciprocal rule. So for that 100mm lens, that 1/200 becomes roughly 1/12. And if your sensor has 4 stops, you could handhold a shot for nearly a second without any shake.

However, at shutter speeds that slow, if anything in the frame is moving, they will probably have motion blur. But for still life scenes, or maybe a sleeping baby, this can be very handy if you don't have a tripod with you.

If being able to handhold at lower shutter speeds seems important, then you might want to seek out a lens with stabilization and pair it to a camera with sensor stabilization for maximum stable-osity.

Lens Compression

Lens compression is kind of a myth, but I think we still call it compression because it is easier to explain to beginners than optical physics. The lens doesn't really compress anything, it's actually a matter of distance and the aforementioned physics. But I'm going to go with the easy explanation for now.

Lens compression is a phenomenon seen with different focal lengths. If you take a photo with a 500mm lens, the background will seem to compress with the foreground. Thus objects in the background will seem much larger in size.

This also happens with faces.

Wider lenses exaggerate distance. At 10mm, the lens would only be a few inches away from someone's face.

From the lens's point of view, the ears are several times farther away from the lens than the tip of the nose. So the lens is like, "Your ears are really far away! And far away things are really small, right?" So the lens gives us a big nose and small ears and makes us look a bit alien.

But at 100mm, the lens will be several yards away.

From this perspective, the lens feels like your ears and your nose are nearly the same distance away. And the lens is now like, "Things that are the same distance away do not get bigger or smaller." The lens seems to compress or flatten the face, causing a more flattering appearance in the image.

Minimum focus distance

This is sometimes called the working distance. This is how close you can get to your subject while maintaining focus. If you get too close, your camera will just hunt and freak out perpetually until you back up and it can lock on again. This isn't always advertised prominently for lenses, so you need to make sure the lens will be able to focus in the space you plan to use it.

Extension Tubes

Sometimes called "macro extension tubes." These are spacers you put between your camera and lens to decrease the minimum focus distance. In some cases you can even turn a normal lens into a macro lens. These tubes are able to stack and the more you put on, the more into the macro realm you can go. They come in smart and dumb versions. The dumb ones require you to manual focus whereas the smart ones can still use the autofocus system. I highly recommend the smart ones, as they are not too much more expensive.

Lens Imperfections

There are a few imperfections that can plague all lenses and their quality is sometimes judged by how well they mitigate those imperfections. Here are some of those attributes.

Lens Distortion

As lenses get wider, they allow a larger field of view by accepting light rays that are coming from the side of your lens. Let's look at this image again.

Your lens then has to correct those rays and send them to a square, flat sensor. If you look at the 180 degree fisheye, that entire arc has to be flattened and made square. And as good as optical engineering has become, the wider the lens, the harder it is to keep the image from distorting.

This is typically called "barrel distortion." Minor distortion can actually be corrected in editing software. Every lens has correction algorithms. Though sometimes it is best to embrace the distortion, like on a fisheye lens. Make the distortion a feature and not a bug.

Chromatic Aberration

This is the fancy name for color fringing. This is a defect in the lens that cause false colors to contaminate certain objects in a photo. Typically this happens around dark skinny things against a bright background, such as tree branches.

Modern lenses have nearly eliminated this, except for the super cheap models, but if you do end up with fringing, this can be easily corrected in Lightroom or Photoshop. And many lenses even have that correction built in and all you have to do is check a box.

Sharpness

You might not think of sharpness as an optical flaw, but no lens is perfectly sharp. And the quest to make a perfectly sharp lens involves engineering those optical flaws to a minimum.

A "sharp lens" is one with incredible fidelity. Even zoomed in beyond 100%, sharp lenses will show great detail. If you can't get close to the subject and need to crop your photo later, having a sharp lens can make up for the loss in resolution—as you can upscale without much loss in quality. If you plan to make large high quality prints, a sharp lens will help more than tons of megapixels.

That said, if you truly want to get the most out of a high megapixel camera, a sharp lens comes in handy here too. A smartphone may boast in the marketing as having 200 megapixels, but it has a tiny plastic lens. So even though it technically has 200 megapixels on the sensor, the lens will give it the equivalent of maybe 8-10 megapixels worth of detail. People forget, the lens has a resolution as well, and if the lens cannot resolve 200 megapixels, you aren't going to get a 200 megapixel image.

A sharp lens will allow for more detail than higher megapixels. In some cases you need to double or triple the number of pixels to see an increase in detail. Whereas you can put a super sharp lens on a 12 megapixel camera and blow any smartphone out of the water.

And if you put a sharp lens on a 50 megapixel camera, you can almost see into skin pores.

So... sharp = more detail. And more detail gives you greater cropping power for when you can't get close to babies.

Now, I am obligated to say that some photo nerds chase sharpness as if it is some holy grail. They need the sharpest lens so all of their pixels are perfect at 100% zoom even though no one ever looks at an image that close. There are amazing photos that have been blurry. There are amazing photos taken with 50 year old vintage glass. Sharpness is just another tool. If you need to crop. If you need to upscale. If you need to print large... it is a great help. But nearly every lens made for a modern mirrorless camera is "sharp" to some degree.

So, if you need extra sharpness for certain situations, do your research and find a lens that is sharp as can be. But sharpness should be like 8th on the list of priorities.

Soft Lens

A "soft" lens is how a non-sharp lens is referred to. Most modern optics for mirrorless cameras have some degree of sharposity.

Sharpitude.

Sharp...ness.

So you don't need to worry too much about getting a detrimentally soft lens unless you go super duper budget. This is why I usually recommend people skip the "kit lens" unless they absolutely can't afford anything better.

Though sometimes people purposely get vintage lenses because they don't like sharpness and prefer the "character" of older lenses. The imperfections can achieve a different artistic goal. Though this can also be achieved through lens filters... or Vaseline.

I'm looking at you, Barbara Walters.

Sharpness at the Corners

When I read that in my head just now I said it the same way I do "Panic! at the Disco."

Engineers will prioritize sharpness at the center of the lens since that is where most of the interesting stuff tends to be. But also, the light rays at the center tend to be the most parallel as they head to the sensor, so they don't need as much correction. The rays coming from the sides have to be bent and manipulated to correct for distortion, so keeping things sharp at the corners can be a challenge.

Now, knowing that, and knowing how the aperture works, you can infer that when you stop down your lens and make the hole smaller, all of the light rays are constricted to a smaller area. This makes them easier for your lens to deal with, so if a lens has problems with corner sharpness, you can usually stop down to improve this. So if a lens is soft at the corners at f/1.8, you might be able to go to f/2 or f/4 to get better results.

Vignetting

Vignetting is a circular area of darkness at the perimeter of your photo. This is another side effect caused by the same things as soft corners. When correcting those non-parallel light rays, it causes them to travel an ever so slightly farther distance getting to your sensor. And the inverse square law tells us that light becomes dimmer as it travels longer distances.

This is very easy to correct. Usually your camera has a setting to correct vignetting if you are outputting JPEG files. And if you are shooting RAW photos, your editing software should have a check box to fix the vignetting—usually the same one that fixes chromatic aberration. This is usually called "lens correction" in most menus.

Also, same as with corner sharpness, stopping down your lens will usually fix this optically rather than with software algorithms.

Contrast

Contrast is probably the most important attribute to determine lens quality. Good contrast can make a soft lens look good. But lens contrast is not always consistent. It can get better or worse depending on the lighting in your scene.

The best way to test the contrast of a lens is to take a picture of something that is backlit. A person with the sun behind them is a great indicator. If they have no light on them, the person should fall into inky darkness. But if a lens has poor contrast, they will seem like a faded gray.

Focus Breathing

Focus breathing is a phenomenon where your focal length changes depending on how far away your subject is. It's usually not a big deal and most people don't even notice it, but if you ever do video, it can cause a few headaches. Some people can get annoyed because they feel they aren't getting the advertised focal length on the lens they bought. Like, if you get a 300mm lens and it only goes to 250mm for things super far away, that can be annoying.

Lens Types

Prime Lens

A "prime lens" has a fixed focal length and cannot be zoomed. Typically prime lenses are "faster" (wider max aperture) and sharper. Weirdly they can be very inexpensive or the most expensive. They can be extremely lightweight or weigh a ton. And if you want the sharpest lens possible or the fastest lens possible or both, it will be expensive and heavy.

Having at least one fast prime is usually recommended for any professional photographer.

Zoom Lens

A "zoom lens" allows you to zoom. Obviously. But there are few that go below an aperture of f/2.8, so less light gathering and you sacrifice a bit of sharpness. However, if you don't know how much space you will have to work with, the flexibility of a zoom can be invaluable.

Be warned, while a cheap prime lens can still take fairly good photos, cheap zooms are usually pretty terrible. There are plenty of reasonably priced zoom lenses to choose from, but if the price seems too good to be true, I would trust that intinct.

Wide Angle Lens

A "wide angle lens" is any focal length below 35mm. Wider focal lengths allow you to get more stuff in the photo at shorter distances. A theme you might notice with photography is that every benefit has a compromise or consequence to go with it. Wide angle lenses are wonderful if you are in a cramped space. They also make it easy to keep everything in focus. But as you go wider, distances become exaggerated and barrel distortion becomes more pronounced and harder to correct.

Things that are close to the lens seem huge and things farther away seem tiny. One trick to remember is things in the center of the frame will be less affected by distortion. Something to take into account when taking those smartphone selfies.

If you look, the ball looks huge in frame because it was only a few inches from the lens. Otis was literally smaller in frame than the ball despite only being about 2 feet away. However, he doesn't look all stretchy like the ball because he is centered.

Standard Lens

A "standard" or "normal lens" represents about the same field of view as the human eye. Generally around 40mm to 55mm on a full frame camera (there is some debate on this, but close enough). This is right about where you can take pictures of faces without the unflattering side effects of wide angle.

Telephoto Lens

A "telephoto lens" allows you to stand farther away and still fill the frame with your subject. Usually lenses 200mm and above are considered telephoto. These are often heavy and expensive.

Specialty Lenses

Ultrawide

This is just an extremely wide angle lens. At this point, you just except the massive amounts of distortion and embrace it. These lenses are extremely fun.

Medium Telephoto

These are sometimes called "portrait" lenses as well. They are a little more tele than standard and not quite tele enough for long distance photography. Usually in the 70-200mm range. This is the focal range that allows you to still be close to your subject but you are far enough away to get extra flattering lens compression on faces.

Superzoom Lens

A "superzoom" has an extremely large focal range. It can go from very wide to very telephoto. These are usually not wonderful lenses, although they have improved on mirrorless cameras in recent years. There are a few that could even be used professionally now. But most are just a huge mediocre compromise for vacation pix.

The cheap ones aren't fast, they aren't sharp, and every time you zoom people think your camera is having an erection.

If you are traveling and you have no idea what you might be photographing and carrying around a bunch of lenses is impractical, these have utility. But the larger the focal range, the more mediocre they get. Typically if the zoom range exceeds ~150mm you will start noticing that mediocrity. So a 70-200mm can be fantastic. But an 18-300mm will be very mid.

Macro

A macro lens is any lens that has 1x or more magnification. 1x magnification is a designation that relates the sensor size to how much of the subject fills the frame of your image. For 1x, that ratio should be 1:1.

So if you imagine a quarter lying on top of an image sensor, that's how big the quarter should be in your photo. 2x magnification would be like if a quarter doubled in size and you laid it on top of the image sensor. And so on.

Beware of lenses claiming to be macro and really only having a short working distance. 0.5x is not macro, but is sometimes advertised as so.

Tilt Shift Lens

This is a very niche lens. Most people know of it from the photos that make everyone look like they are in a miniature land.

For every other lens, the focal plane is perpendicular. If you move the camera at an angle, the focal plane will match that movement. So what the tilt shift lens allows you to do is angle the focal plane so your depth of field goes in bonkers directions.

Product photographers love this because you can take a photo of an array of products from a 45 degree angle and keep everything in focus.

This image would be impossible to maintain complete focus of all the objects without a tilt shift lens.

In this example, without tilting the lens, the tip of the multitool is out of focus.

And now you can see the camera hasn't moved, but the lens is at a steeper angle. And you'll also notice the entire tool is in focus.

But wait, there's more! Did you forget about the shifting? Architectual photographers can use the shift function of the lens to correct perspective distortion and keep buildings looking straight.

Will this lens help in the photographing of infants?

Probably not.

But I bet you thought it was cool and are glad I included it.

Recommended Essential Lenses

I didn't know what to call this section. These are just the collection of lenses most photographers will try to acquire as they build out their kit.

Nifty Fifty

This is probably the first lens everyone should buy. Almost every brand has their own version. It is an inexpensive 50mm lens with a sub f/2 aperture. Canon's Nifty Fifty or "Plastic Fantastic" is probably the most famous example. It is only $125 and has an f/1.8 aperture.

This lens may not be the sharpest and it might have a lot of plastic-y, cheap feeling parts, but it is a wonderful way to get started with photography. You can use the wide aperture to experiment with bokeh and shallow depth of field. And the 50mm focal length is probably one of the most versatile. Not too wide, so people look normal, and not too tele, so you aren't a mile away from your subjects.

The Holy Trinity

The "Holy Trinity" is meant to describe the 3 lenses that can handle nearly every photographic task while maintaining professional quality results. Typically these lenses are all f/2.8 and are high quality zoom lenses. The 16-35mm, the 24-70mm, and the 70-200mm.

Most photographers can accomplish just about any task with these lenses in their bag.

Froggie's Holy Hexagon

That said, if I had an unlimited budget I would actually have 6 lenses to cover everything. Beyond the Holy Trinity, I would get a fast prime, an ultrawide, and a macro lens.

A fast prime can see in the dark and has more background blur. The nifty fifty would work great for this.

An ultrawide is one of the most fun lenses you will ever use, even if it distorts everything to a crazy degree and isn't useful very often. It is great for breaking you out of photographic ruts and can really get the creative juices flowing.

And a macro lens is not just useful for making tiny things big. It also allows you to focus at any distance. Sometimes you just need to get a tad bit closer than your other lenses will allow. Macro lenses are also pretty great portrait lenses and can serve multiple functions.

And if anyone is interested in sports or wildlife photos, a nice telephoto lens might be a seventh lens to consider.

This is all based on my own experiences working with the all father and nothing here is to be taken as a hard fact. If your practice differs from my own that is totally fine. There will be a lot of UPG and SPG)

An incomplete summary of Odin in Norse mythology.

Odin, god of war and wisdom is a key figure in the Norse myths and is involved in a lot of the stories. He is the head of the Norse gods and is called the All father, because it’s by him that all of humans were created. He is married to Frigg and together they had Baldur and Hodr. Odin also has other sons, Thor, Vali, and Vidar.

He has two ravens Huginn and Muninn, and two wolves Geri and Freki.

He only has one eye, he sacrificed his other eye by throwing it into Mimir’s well in exchange for knowledge that could better help him prevent Ragnarok.

Another famous story of his is when he hung upside down from the tree of life for nine days and nine nights to get knowledge of other worlds and to be able to know everything about the runes.

The type of magic he practices (Seiðr) was a feminine type of magic that wasn’t always looked highly on when men would participate in it. Yet our Allfather was very practiced in it.

My experience working with him: One thing to know about working with Odin going in, he will be very honest and blunt. My other deities have a habit of being softer on my feelings than I’ve heard other devotees say they’ve been with them, I’m assuming because I’m very sensitive. But Odin..? He does not care. He will stop giving advice if I tell him I don’t want to hear it. But, if I ask for advice…oh boy, am I gonna get his full opinion. He is very much a father in the way he goes about things, he cares but he wants his followers to push themselves as much as they can, learning as much as you can and always growing, never staying sedentary for too long.

I have a notebook dedicated to him that I’ve been using to work on learning the runes and that seems to be the best offering to give him in my practice right now. He never misses a chance to remind me I need to get back to learning the runes too.

I always wondered why it mattered so much to him that I learn them. Eventually he told me that it was because they really would be useful in spells, and wards and making bind runes out of them is something I’m learning to do now.

He is not the easiest deity to work with, he may even push your buttons on purpose to get you to think harder on things. I’ve noticed he’s even been rude before just to see if I’d stand up for myself and set boundaries and then he’ll explain himself after. Lots of tests trials and teachings. But man, is it worth it for the immense amount of knowledge and mentorship that he can bring. All in all, I’m glad he came to me later in my practice as I might’ve been scared off from deity work if he was the first. But, I love him to pieces and hope to work with him for a long time.

Offerings and associations of Odin

(Odin does not eat food so I’ve seen many people say not to give him food offerings, I disagree! Give him things that he can feed to Geri and Freki. He is known to still fill his plate and just give them bits over meals. So don’t hesitate to gift him any food offerings you would to any other Norse god)

There are many more ways to learn about him and get close to him. A great one is reading the Hávamál. If you meditate or do tarot or rune casting those are also great ways to contact him and get closer to him.

Signs he might be reaching out; seeing ravens more than usual or in non native areas, very windy days, rain, seeing his name often, feeling drawn to his mythology, seeing his tarot cards pop up often, you already work with one of his sons (I think he sent Thor to me first to soften my idea of the Norse gods and be a warm intro into their pantheon.)

He is a great god to work with, lots of work though. Odin is not for the weak minded, but he’s been so worth getting to know.

Just A Dude!Ghost Monster AU

Side note before this post gets rolling, I love that my post with the highest notes starts with "I don't know who else" and I think that's very reflective of what Tumblr is like XD

Anyways

We're doing it! We are writing a Monster AU featuring Ghost as the only human despite what everyone else thinks! As far as I am concerned, mostly gonna post it here on Tumblr, since I don't really have much right now for it, mostly just little blurbs but if needed for readability, I'll put it on AO3 (under my profile FeelzMaster)

I'm gonna go ahead and give y'all the rundown of what species are featured, kinda what this world's like, the stuffs, ya know? TW: talks of death (just how they can die, relax)

Soap

To be 100% honest, I really wanted to do the whole werewolf!Soap thing cause it's just so perfect for him, but I thought back to a post I made about him being lightning and thought HUH WHAT IF?

So, partially inspired by @tactax-art and their depiction of Soap dealing with fire 'n shit, I have made Soap a unique type of "nymph". Technically, nymph isn't the right word, but neither is elemental, and the true name of these things is so old it's real translation has kinda lost meaning so they stick to describing themselves as "nymphs" or "elementals".

He is a Lightning Nymph, which is rare but that's apparently what happens when you cross an "atmospheric" air nymph (his mum) and a less traditional water nymph (his dad). He's often seeing consuming/messing with things that have electrical charge in order to keep up his own energy (Gaz once had to watch him literally lick an exposed outlet and maintain a straight face). Every time it storms, he's outside somewhere as high as he can get so he can soak up the natural static energy that comes with storms. He can and will shock people for the fun of it.

As for abilities, he's obviously highly conductive, can manipulate electrical energy but it's pretty exhausting so it's more of a life or death thing, he can glow in the dark if he wants to, and he's hyper aware of changes (due to ~energy~). His diet is batteries... Jk, but seriously he does not eat like a human would, he straight up eats things that will help with energy. Like I said earlier, he's licked an exposed outlet like it was an espresso shot. Downside is he can't see for shit in the dark so he's reliant on sensing energies, nightvision, or having one of his buddies that can see in the dark guide him. Can be killed if his brain stem is destroyed, but is also very weakened by the typical stuff (gunshots, stab wounds, severe bodily trauama, etc). but can be severely weakened by being trapped in insulated rooms/wrapped in insulators. If exposed to these things and not able to find a sustainable source of electrical energy, he will die. (rubber, steel, copper are some good insulators)

Gaz

I don't know why but I'm gonna make him a Siren. For some reason Siren!Gaz just melts my heart and I wanna hold him. I don't care if he can lure me to my death with his voice, I wanna hear him sing :'(

He's typically pretty human appearing, it's a natural instinct for Sirens, but when he's tired or distracted (like working out/doing paperwork), you can start to see some very fish-like qualities. Mostly very gorgeous iridescent scales around his ears, eyes, neck, shoulders, knees, top of his feet, and back of his hands.

Can breathe underwater, has the best vision in the dark, eats like a typical person but with more sea food cravings or cravings for fatty foods (like human), when in full Siren form he doesn't have a "mermaid's" tail, it's much more shark-like so he can accelerate really fast. Generally just more shark-like, except his scales are fish-like. His nose, like sharks, is super sensitive to certain changes, so booping his nose always throws him off if it's surprise, but he will also bump his nose into people/things without realizing it to get a better sense of it. Can be killed by things humans can, susceptible to parasites.

Price

Honestly, his has been the hardest but I'm gonna do changeling. I honestly don't know a lot about them, and quite frankly I've already got one homebrewed monster here, so why not another?

He's definitely the one everyone mistakes for being human cause he's so good at keeping up appearances. But there are always times where Price manipulates his appearance/body just enough that it's a little startling for those that believed him to be human to suddenly realize he's very much not.

He's got better eyesight in the dark than a human, but nowhere near close to what Gaz has. He's good at picking up on scents though, as his nose is a bit more attune to sniffing out humans than anything. He's not a bloodsucker, but changelings typically feed on weakened/ill/very old/very young humans, so he's able to tell when something is wrong with someone. Stifles the more violent urges of his species by eating a primarily meat heavy diet with a lot of raw veggies for the crunch. Most susceptible to things with iron or salt (obvi) but can still be fatally wounded by stab wounds/gunshots. Most other stuff won't kill him but it'll certainly hurt and he'll complain the entire time.

Alejandro and Rudy

These two are werewolves and Los Vaqueros is their pack :'). Most Vaqueros are also werewolves, but they do have a variety of other creatures commonly found in North America.

And finally, the whole point of this: we got our boy Ghost as a literal human being. Nothing more, just a dude. A dude with so much fucked up shit happening to him constantly it's just assumed he must be inhuman. NOPE! He's just a dude, a very very unlucky, and probably cursed, dude.

So yeah, that's what I have so far! Working title is "Cheers to the Unknown"

How do you maintain love in your playerbase knowing that some of the people there are the same selfish people who are leaking or trying to leak/pirate the hard work of indie devs and writers? Ngl my project was nowhere near as big and popular as yours but something like that happened to me and I slowly lost interest in my project. I still keep up with IFs I like but can't ever seem to manifest the interest and love I used to have for my work after it happened the first time. People say things like giving up is just "letting them win" or that we should just be happy that someone out there enjoys our game and hearing "reasons" like that make me realize it's hopeless to get any respect for my work

First of all, I'm really sorry your project got leaked. It is an unfortunate side of being a creator - especially an online one. Regardless of the form, regardless of whether you're an hobbyist or a professional, art is a hot commodity. People want high quality entertainment, but they don't want to pay for it.

I've been avoiding addressing the IF leaks outside of this post because I don't think it's productive to throw any more attention on the situation. Leaks happen, they are always going to happen--if someone wants something and they can't afford it or don't want to pay for it and they want it badly enough, they will find a loophole. At the end of the day, it's a very small community of people who are pirating and shoving them into the spotlight is only going to draw more people who were maybe on the fence about downloading pirated content into doing it.

I am pretty steeled when it comes to this topic now. IF isn't the only place where I have experienced my work being leaked. I come from a theatre background and it is very easy for your original work to get produced without you even knowing about it.

A show I worked on in 2012 has its script available online as part of the library of the university where it was produced. My co-writer and I don't collect royalties from it; the intention is for it to remain free to produce for amateur and university companies. However, because of the political and sensitive nature of the script, my co-writer is very adamant about directors contacting her for permission to produce it and to follow certain guidelines before putting it on. Learning about a production in Australia months after the show closed didn't feel great. It wasn't about money, it was about ethics.

With the IF leaks specifically, I think there's a bit of a disconnect happening here between the people who want to play the games and how they view the indie creator who made them. They see paying a Patreon sub as the same as paying a big company for a product, and if they can't afford to pay it or if they don't want to, then no harm is done by pirating it.

But that's not what the relationship is.

Patreon is not paying for a product, it is supporting the creator's livelihood. I am extremely grateful for my patrons. A game the size of Wayfarer is not something that can feasibly be done in the spare moments between day jobs. But capitalism stops for no one and to make this game, I need to be able to afford rent and groceries. A living wage, as some would say.

Are leaks disheartening? Yes. But I also think that people who play pirated content were never going to sub to Patreon in the first place. And, as mentioned earlier, the number of people involved is relatively small. Thankfully, I'm not that much at risk of leaks actually affecting my income at the moment. But I would be concerned and would take a firmer stance if you Googled Wayfarer and the first search result was a pirated copy (and then I would probably follow the appropriate steps to have that result taken down from the search results).

I think the worst thing you can do as a creator is confront leakers directly. That is only going to blow back on you and put more of a spotlight on the fact that your work is getting leaked. I much would rather focus my time and energy on encouraging my community not to pirate my content than chasing down leakers and making PSAs about it.

For the folks who can't afford a Patreon sub or to anyone considering pirating my content, I would encourage you to apply to be playtesters when applications are open. If you bug test for me, then you can play the alpha content for free.

Outside of that, I take measures to protect my work as much as I can. It's not a perfect system (I don't think it's possible to make your work 100% pirating proof - if people want it badly enough, they will find a way to get it), but I know I've done as much as I can and I am content with that. I don't let it bother me. I have more important things to do with my time.

And for the people who do pirate my work - Bravo! Congratulations! It's very entertaining how petty you are.

HAPPY AUTISM AWARENESS DAY!

First: happy autism awareness day to all my mun/mods with autism or who have characters with autism. (in my case, it's both!)

So in honour of Autism Awareness Day and month, I'd like to tell you all about my levels of autism <3

Tics and Fidgets: I'm on the spectrum such that I have a lot of tics and fidgets. Usually it's the repititions which feel nice, and it can often annoy others. I have a tendency to: click my tongue, snap my fingers, flap my hands, rock back and forth, and i make popping sounds. the more subtle tics are pulling my hair, picking my fingernails.

Poor Eye contact: Poor eye contact with me is only with people i don't know or during stressful situations. like if i'm in a meeting with Nick Fury, i'll be fine. but if i'm greeting new agents? hell no. (//ooc: i can talk to my class teacher just fine, but with maybe the delivery man, a cashier, i can't look them in the eyes.).

Abnormal Posture: ...as an agent, this is a huge no-no. the only reason i got the job is because my abnormal posture is literally me just keeping my fists clenched at all times, and keeping my left foot a bit more in front of the other. a tense fighting stance if you will. Convenient!

Anxiety: Shockingly, it's low! I only get anxious in places which are too loud or too far from home. loud places make me really anxious because it means i have too many thoughts in my head and too many things to process at a time. and being deaf, too, with hearing aids, it makes it 100x tougher. Sorry, but Azalea Romanoff-Maximoff isn't the girl you take to a party or a club.

Social Difficulty: I have moderately high social difficulty. as in, i have trouble communicating my thoughts when in big groups, and making friends is a bit...daunting as a task. And sometimes i miss on non-verbal cues like sarcasm, subtle joking, even a few metaphors here and there. So iF YOU NEED A SPECIFIC BIRTHDAY GIFT, TELL ME TO MY FACE. DON'T HINT IT-? I WILL LITERALLY NOT GET YOUR POINT.

Noise Sensitivity: ...have you met me? i am VERY sensitive to noise. Vacuum cleaners, power drills, gunshot sounds (//ooc: movies, especially), someone typing loudly on their laptop, so many of these day-to-day sounds drive me to a meltdown sometimes because it's just so annoying.

Abnormal/Flat Speech: Nope. Most people can tell how i'm feeling by my voice, except in situations where i'm confused on how to react. like if someone says they're pregnant, i'll just say 'oh, nice.' like, are you happy or sad or like-? eH???

Fixations: I have plenty. But my biggest ones? Top Three: Animals, History, Space. iF i get bored, i will literally talk about this for hours, and dare you show even an iota of interest in the same, my friend you're gonna be there a WHILE.

Depression: only on sensory overload days, or on days where i randomly get sad. a result of the anxiety, honestly. i think wayyyyy too many 'what if' scenarios.

Aggression: And finally, I'm not a very aggressive person. Only if i'm very overstimulated, if i'm not being heard, or if i'm just having a bad day in general, i might break a pencil or two. maybe throw a few books down a shelf.

BONUS: soooo i hate the colour yellow or anything that is yellow. like, i haven't ever touched a banana. my favourite colour is red, and my favourite animal is the panda. i hate the feeling of shag carpets and i don't like the feeling of nylon on skin. i don't like the scratchiness of yarn and i don't like the sound of chalk on a chalkboard. i do like the hum of an air conditioner though, and looking outside a window helps calm me down.

SO that's all about my autism! I hope i made you all aware! Reach out to any fellow autistic people you may know, and do find out about their fixations, if they're non-verbal or verbal. accept them for who they are, don't try and fix them.

autism isn't a disease. our minds are just wired differently. if you can figure out how a complex video game works within 24 hours, how hard can a person be?

I was also wondering how it would change if Shidou got guilty like he wanted in T1? Due to his like "this world is cruel" attitude? Don't feel obligated to answer if there are other things you want to do. I hope you enjoy your day <333

Oh, thank you for such a polite ask!

I was writing a very long post- So, it took a minute for me to get around to reading this. I hope you do like the answer though because i have a lot of thoughts on guilty Shidou. I even surprised myself a bit.

Personally I think if Shidou got the trial verdict he wanted he would have been incredibly scarred and upset by it. He's shown to be upset by people have negative opinions of him in Throw Down. So, he's the sort to be really sensitive to the opinion of others. This is because, like Kotoko he's rather oblivious to the feelings of the people around them.

For a good example think of them like Laios from Dungeon Meshi. They both put they're interests and hobbies above the feelings of others unintentionally and end up being careless with their relationships. Causing there to be a level of distance between them and others that they themselves rarely perceive if ever perceive outside of direct acts of hostility. Futa is like this to an extent as well.

Here are some instances that display this oblivious nature of his.

20/06/08

Mahiru: Shidou-san…… you’re really good-looking. Personally I think you’d be better if you ate a bit more, but you’re slim and tall, and well put together to boot…… You must’ve been super popular up until now, right?

In Minigram Episode 31: Going For A Walk Shidou doesn't recognize that Mu want's attention and continues walking around the panopticon.

He asks her to join her of course Shidou is courteous but he doesn't stand around idle to make small talk after she says she's not interested in walking. Going straight back to what he set out to do.

And with that he continuedd his walk. Meeting Mahiru along the way and walking with her when they wrap back around to Mu, Mahriu verbal notes and recognizes Mu is upset.

This habit is also shown of in the Minigram Episode 16: Insensitive,

Where Shidou is shown to be intrigued by Kotoko's discussion instead of disgusted like the rest of them.

Kotoko not even stopping her discussion until Futa has to remind her that he's trying to eat and maybe tallking about peeing on clothes isn't the most appropriate right now. Not even going into how she just starts this conversation because she notices him staring at his spoon.

He just fucking thinks it and Kotoko is observing people well enough to go i know what that guy's thinking but not that maybe this is not the appropriate time to say the rest off this.

Q.09 Which of the other prisoners do you think resembles you the most?

Kotoko: That’s a hard one. I’m only able to answer based on my guess on what they did. But I think the one that probably resembles me the most is Futa? Though he’s also the person who resembles me the least.

Let's get back on topic now we know that Shidou is a bit oblivious to the feelings of those around him. Is he self-conscious when those feelings are brought to his attention plainly though?

Given these lyrics in Throw Down I believe so.

"“NO” in my dream I am making you cry again, I am being blamed. “NO” the hesitation I killed is holding its breath and sniffing out lies."

Shidou cold opens his first song showing that despite strengthening his resolve to do the things he feels he must and can't stop doing the upset it creates for those around him still causes him to hesitate. That he feels upset when what he does causes others to cry or when he is being blamed for misfortune. Yet, he can't stop.

He wants this cycle to end but this cycle is also the only thing given him a reason to live.

"Tock-tock… tells me, the reason it’s ok to be here."

Shidou doesn't ask the audience to vote him guilty because he wishes tobe punished through living on being held accountable for his actions and the harm they caused. He's asking because he wants to be able to die. He wants something that tells him it's not okay to be here without it hurting him emotionally.

That's why in his first voice drama he states that doing three trials and unnecessary while asking for Es to simply skip to the death sentence. There's also this lyric that highlights his disconnect between the the repercussions for his active choices and his long term goals.

"I don’t feel scared because I don’t know."

He isn't afraid because he doesn't yet know-

"Not dead. Yeah, she's definitely not dead. I finally understand the value of what I've been robbing people of."

He's not scared to do what he's doing because he doesn't comprehend the pain he's causing people. Shidou exists to juxtapose and embody the mindset that Kotoko espouses. That people who do the sort of things that got everyone here put in Milgram possibly won't understand the severity of their actions until they've lost something.

"Es, look. Someone who committed a crime can only realise its severity through losing something. I've seen many criminals, but none of them would give way without pain."

Shidou's serves to highlight that despite how radical in her implementation Kotoko is she isn't entirely wrong. The only thing that's causing her to be wrong is the fact that her methods are inflexible she uses the same means on every individual even when it may not be situationally appropriate.

Still Shidou perfectly represents the sort of person who can casually do harm to others because they have yet to experience the same things themselves.

Or to put it simply Shidou only believed the ends justifed the means means because he wasn't the one footing the bill for those means.

"After stabbing you with my words, the blood started to flow and slowly stained my white. Hey, you remember what it feels like? The feeling to take away in order to give."

Q.15 Do you think you’ve made a contribution to society?

Shidou: I used to think my work was a contribution to society.

He's taking from others to give to himself so he won't see the issue with that cause there's he's constantly gaining. Why would he see an issue? He believes this will all pay off in the end for himself.

This is one of the reasons Delusion Tax suits him so well.

Because it's a song all about making empty promises to help the other person get what they want then just running off with all the gains. Even ending with,

"But those wishes won't really come true, even if you pay. For it's all a lie, a great big farce. Thank you for all that, that's plenty. These scraps of paper belong to me now. That's right for all these dirty delusions let's settle the bill with this dirty money."

Like thanks I used you now- You had some nice thoughts there too, right? So let's just settle the bill and end things here. Trial three double innocent Shidou is definitely going to be fun. Getting off topic having some nice thoughts of my own here but yeah.

Shidou wants the outcome of being guilty but doesn't want to walk the road to get there. He doesn't want to go through that mental torture because as he said from the start,

"“Throw down” emotions with no color I wonder if I can die with it still left."

This is why when it's immediately brought to his attention that the verdict causes mental anguish. Something that would make it impossible for him to die with emotions that have no color he changes his tune. Suddenly he needs to be innocent not for his sake though he still wants to be guilty in the end- In fact he doesn't even know the right answer yet really. He just knows that there are lives that need saving so his abilites make him indepensable. He needs to be innocent for their sake what if someone dies.

So, if Shidou was guilty with no forewarning that the verdict caused mental anguish suffering and for those to hear voices constantly blaming them something he admits being sensitive to in his first trial song... I honestly think it would have taken a very heavy emotional toll on him and he would have holed himself off as we see him doing in Throw Down and is alluded to in Triage.

Which could be why he stated this during his trial two written interrogation,

Q.07 Are there any prisoners you get along with?

Shidou: Kayano-kun has become like that, and I can’t spend my time smoking at the moment, so the smoking trio has disbanded, which is a bit lonely.

Specifying how Mikoto had become because it reminded him of how he used to act and caused him to be upset.

A trial one guilty would have emotionally wrecked this man. He was already. Hair more dishelveled than Mikoto's restraints tighter probably and not even mentioning if Kotoko is still innocent during this he would have been jumper after Futa and Before Mahiru.

Since Kotoko said,

"I attacked everyone in order, but because of the interference caused by Kayano Mikoto and Mukuhara Kazui, who was protecting Kajiyama Fuuta, I couldn't finish it properly."

So, good news Mahiru would have been uninjured since Mikoto and Kazui intervened during Kotoko's second attack.

Bad news he would not be able to really help the injured or would have possibly died. Though I don't think they'd kill him that early he'd be more injured than Mahiru for sure. Because his on the slim side as Mahiru noted and how much strength he has is unknown.

He may have reflected on his treatment of children a little and not be as demeaning to Es. Because he would respect them being able to see through his theatrics a bit more. Instead of believing Es and the audience still don't know anything yet.

"You don’t even know yet, and yet."

I could imagine despite Amane being upset with him her gritting her teeth and trying to help without him badgering over her shoulder. Because she wouldn't want anyone to die either. I mean she couldn't leave the cat alone and all it had was a scratch.

So chances are taking care of people might have fallen on her in the case of that happening. Like if Shidou was guilty and her innocent first trial or even if they were both Guilty. Since it seems Kotoko was always going to attack the prisoners in order.

Shidou would more than likely in contrast to Mahiru be opnely angry about the situation since he doesn't sem to like violence at all. Plus despite being innocent he still holds disdain towards Kotoko. Making me feel his anger over it would just be doubled and he would take low shots to hold Es to the same accountability they held him to.

Probably saying something along the lines of,

"This prisoners are your responsibilty. That's what you claimed. Right now we're all like your patients then and the only thing you seem to be doing is making us all worse. In a lot of ways you may be no different from me it seems.... Even children can be this way after all. I was naive."

Really just twisting it in. The same way he sort of does in his second voice drama already.

He does say I see how cruel this world is in Triage but I feel like he's saying that in a only a cruel uncaring world would find a person like me innocent. Especially given the information from Deep Cover confirming that Kotoko did go to court implying all of the prisoners may have from Kazui's statement on acquitted murderers in his first voice drama and Jackalope stating in Es' if this was just about the law than there would be no point in them being here.

So I thought that Shidou was once again upset that he hadn't been held accountable to the extent that he should be which meant he would have to live with himself. So I think if he were guilty trial one he would consider that to be fair in a lot of ways. Yet not be able to handle all the voices judging and blaming him. He'd probably take it a little harder than Futa maybe go to others for reassurance.

Because of his carelessness he wouldn't be able to support himself in the face of scrutiny like that. He'd probably either end up relying a bit on Mikoto who didn't have anyone else to confide in about his guilty verdict because Futa basically told him there's no use talking to him about it. Plus Mikoto and Kazui are the only two in Milgram he treats somewhat like equals.

If Kazui is still innocent under this framing he could end up relying on him or being around the both of them more. The smoking club definitely would not have disbanded because Shidou would probably be smoking more if anything. Like I just imagine him being super dispondent and a bit shaken in his belief about children.

He would defintiely take Es more seriously after that's for sure.

Summary: As Alastor was walking down a hall, he passed by to check up on Charlie as she was in her room deciding a dress. Alastor give her some suggestions about which one she should wear. Helping Charlie zip up the dress of his choice, he ends up hold her sides making Charlie let out a squeal. Charlie tells Al how sensitive she is and Charlie quickly regrets it.

In the evening, Alastor was going through the halls of the hotel on his daily dawn stroll. As he was walking, he heard some noise in Charlie’s room and decided to stop on by to check on her and see what’s happening. “Ugh! I can’t decide which dress to wear. There both so nice!!” Charlie groaned. “Oh, evening Al!” as Charlie saw her good friend from the corner of her eye. “Good evening darling! I hear some problems are going on. Is everything okay?” Alastor asked worriedly. “Oh I’m fine, I just can’t seem to pick what dress to wear today, Vaggie went shopping and she bought them for me, so I really wanna wear one! I just can’t seem to pick one!”

“Well, may I see them?” Alastor asked delightfully. “Sure! There’s a two piece, and a red dress with a cute head band. I have a little black neck tie to wear and they go nice with both!” Charlie answered in a bubbly tone.

“I think the 2 piece would look quite charming on you!” Alastor suggested. “Okay, I’ll go put it on and fix my hair. As Alastor waited, he sat down on an armchair looking at the wall of pictures Charlie had of all the fun times her and the crew had. “Okay, I put it on and I did my hair, how do I look?”

“You look like the princess you are!” Alastor stated. “Thanks Al! Oh, and can you zip the side of my skirt? It’s a bit far back and I can’t reach.” Charlie asked Al. “No Problem!” Alastor said as he walked over to zip up the skirt infront of the mirror. “Purfect my-“ Alastor was interrupted by a squeal that Charlie mad when she jumped. “Is everything okay darling, did I hurt you?” Alastor asked in a nervous voice. “ No no Al it’s just, just that my sides are sensitive.”

Alastor asked, “Sensitive meaning?” “Very ticklish.” After hearing that, Alastor stared wide-eyed to Charlie, “Ticklish?” he reapeted after Charlie. “Yeah…” After Charlie saw his face, she knew exactly what he had been thinking and she tried to run out the room but before she knew it, The Radio Demon had snapped her right back to her bed. Charlie could feel something crawling on her skin realizing that it had been Alastor’s shadow tentacles holding her legs down. “ALASTOR” she screamed angrily as tentacles caught her arms before she could throw a punch.

“Ahal, you don’t really have to do this. Rehembee when you said I looked like th princess I am?! W-well now IyAHAHAHAHAH” the princess couldn’t finish as the Radio demon already started to lightly scitter his claws against her sides. “I just got my claws sharpened, let’s see what they can do dear!” Alastor teased as he slowly went from his sides, to her belly. Charlie’s laughing, turned to screams of joy. “Look at that! Our young princess I squeamish when her belly is scratched the right way.” Alastor’s chuckled, teasing wasn’t very helpful to Charlie as her face was heating up from blushing.

“AHAHAL, IHIHTS NOHOHOT FUHUHUNHEY!!” Charlie scream in joyous laughter. Soon, he had only told the shadows to release her legs and go up and cover her eyes. “ALASTOR” is all she screamed once she saw nothing but darkness as the Radio Demon had stopped scratching her stomach. “Hmm, I wonder if these little hoofs are ticklish dear, don’t you?” But the only response he got was giggles siente he had been spidering from her hips, slowing down to her shoes.

“Ahahal, p-please don’t do this!” she said nervously as she felt the Demon pull up her one of her shoes. “3…2…” and before Alastor could get to while Charlie was pleading, he already started and she has been scream and blushing her head of turning her face away from the Radio Demon. “How adorable! Don’t hide you pretty face from me darling!” Charlie couldn’t even open her eyes, nor speak. She was so helpless and vulnerable, she hates how ticklish she was because it was a major weakness she had.

“Okay, I think it’s time I give you a break.” Alastor said as the shadows crawled away and Alastor slipped the shoe of the princess back in her foot” she was panting and could still feel the tingle of the giggles on her foot. “Seems like the princess had a fun time now, did you darling?” He chuckled and teased. “Yeah, totally” the Princess said sarcastically and rolling her eyes. “Well I have to go some work to do, I’m supposing that you’ll be in your way to the Radio Station?” Charlie smirked and walked out the room.

They both went there, Alastor who has been satisfied, and Charlie who had still been holding her stomach.

haha wait sory follow up to the last two asks . i finally remember what the term for it is. Like, double standards. My issue with how some ppl interpret The Laios and Toshiro argument is how they kind of hold them to a diff standard of like tha fault is mostly with Toshiro for not speaking up instead of Laios because ppl see him as more oblivious in general even tho yea i mean that's fair i can also be like that sometimes!!! but its unfair that ppl say Toshiro isn't some flavour of neurodivergent too and is just like. an allistic asshole. lmao

either way i think theyre both interestingly flawed. and i enjoyed their fight and what it like meant for both of them (a big growth moment because laios like has a more understanding perspective of others' now and how like some ppl are going to be annoyed with him / how he should be more careful going forward with boundaries. and he also like . can see other ppls perspectives more in particular how toshiros sleep deprivation and lack of eating contributed to him lashing out suddenly at Laios.

and then how for Toshiro he kinda like? becomes more assertive and like doesnt just repress whatever it is he wants to say. Like the fight is super well written and interesting for both of their characters' growth so i want more ppl to kind of like /get/ that its less of a NT vs ND typa situation and more of a yeah these guys are both autistic, goin at it, and learning from their past mistakes. Getting worse before they get better at communication, that kind of stuff :]

I think this is all very valid and true and honestly this sorta fandom mini-ecosystem is really reflective of how people view neurodivergence as a whole, like there's some sorta monolith and one size fits all solution.

IDK how many people have this experience but at my elementary school they had a special daily class for the kids with "social difficulties" which basically meant they threw all the neurodiverse kids in a room and treated their different symptoms as exactly the same and were surprised when most of us HATED each other by the end. I have little to no volume control and was put next to a kid with severe noise sensitivity and yet they thought we'd get along because we both deviated from the norm. People expect there to be one true neurodivergent experience and it just doesn't work like that.

I definitely get what you mean about relating to both Laios and Toshiro and being annoyed at the mentality that you need to pick a side too, even if there is a million percent more Laios in me than Toshiro. A lot of people don't realize that people's symptoms don't follow an archetype and can have symptoms that seem to conflict with each other (I for example am a selective mute who also talks impulsively). People keep making false dichotomies with this stuff which is also where the temptation to make it into an autistic vs allistic right vs wrong thing comes in and it's a whole mess.

At the end of the day I just wish people were comfortable viewing this moment of conflict between Laios and Toshiro as a moment both of them needed to have to learn and grow, that's why they were both all bruised up at the end, neither came out as someone perfect but it's what they need to move past their differences and stuff.

That's also why I think it's so cool that there's a whole community online full of other neurodivergent folks who can all throw their own perspectives in and all that! I really enjoy hearing your perspective on Toshiro's character and I'm glad you help me think about him in ways I wouldn't have been able to on my own! :3

Nimloth was kicking her legs, swinging her arm as she laid upon one of the arching branches above the grand hall of Menegroth.

Here, enclosed by vines and flowers and moss, she would remain unseen, but she need only ask to plants to move a little to see everything. Mother said she was too young to be up so late and watching such proceedings, but that just went to show what she knew.

Queen Melian saw all in Doriath, and had not yet reproached Nimloth. That must mean her 'snooping' was righteous.

But even being resolved of her righteousness had not stopped Nimloth from growing... bored.

Her kin, who were not the kinslayers, but were kin of the kinslayers were proving to be shockingly dull. Her cousins, Lord Finrod and Lady Galadriel- named such by Uncle Celeborn, in what the whole court agreed was a very romantic display, but Nimloth thought was mostly funny- made merry the same as anyone else. There had thus far been none of the drink throwing and hair pulling that her friends whispered would happen, when their kin who were the kinslayers' kin were re-invited to Doriath.

Still, Galadriel and Finrod glowed, and that was just interesting enough to watch from above. They took up so much space. Only Luthien and Daeron could match them for gloriousness, and for some reason that annoyed Nimloth. She wasn't quite sure why.

Ah, that would probably fade once she met them. Mother and Father were agreed that she should be of age before consorting with their strange, proud, lying, kinslayer's kin kin. Nimloth thought that was foolish, but she picked her battles.

Mother and Father could be so over-protective, and what stung the most was that she knew they had not always been this way. Why-

"You always find the best spots," a voice said from her left, as a weight settle next to her head.

Nimloth gasped and sat up, a grin splitting her face.

"Oropher!" she whisper shouted, and her cousin smiled brightly at her. He held up an arm, allowing her to throw herself around his torso, squeezing as tightly as she could. He dropped his arm around her shoulders and squeezed right back.

"I missed you," she said into his shoulder, "you've been gone so long, why are you always gone these days?"

Oropher laughed softly and said, "Part of the job, kid. Marchwarden Mablung runs a tight outpost. I'm not about to go asking for time-off and make him hate me. Or worse- think I'm soft."

Nimloth rolled her eyes and did not hide it. She knew Oropher had this grand and horrible fear of people thinking he was 'soft', because he grew up in Menegorth with Mother, Father, and her, and not in some desolate outpost with Aunt Tanwendess, who Nimloth had only ever called Marchwarden Tanwendess. She was the toughest elleth Nimloth knew, and as different from Mother as could be, though they were twins.

Personally, she thought it was a grand thing that Oropher had been raised by Mother and Father and not that steely marchwarden. It made him as good as her brother, which could only be a good thing. But Nimloth knew that Oropher disagreed- about the raising part, not the brother part, he always assured her- so she did not say anything.

He was so sensitive.

"But you're here now," she said happily, pulling away from the hug.

"I am," he agreed, releasing his arm from around her shoulders and ruffling her hair. "A lucky break, I was assigned to escort your Noldor kin to the city, with a few others. I'm only here for two days, but we'll make it count, yeah?"

Nimloth ignored the stab in her heart at hearing he would be leaving so soon. He was gone so often... Nimloth bit the inside of her cheek, to halt the sorrow. If he could not stay long, she would have to be resolute. Resilient like an oak, as Oropher said. They'd make the most of it.

"Yeah," she agreed, trying to remain cheery. "Right. I can't believe you've met my cousins and I haven't! Did you tell them you were my kin?"

Oropher laughed, loud and deep and Nimloth knew at least someone below must have heard him and looked up. He could not be sneaky for the life of him. But even if Mother and Father caught wind of her being out of bed, now that Oropher was here, they would only sigh, rather than punish her.

They knew he would take care of her.

"Absolutely not," he said, only marginally less loud. "Your Lord Finrod is a trial even if he does not think you have anything to offer him. If he knew about Aunt Tathrenes? Insufferable, I would not have been able to breathe, Lothig."

"You do not like him then?" she asked, eyes widening, "Everyone seems to like Lord Finrod, even Uncle King Elu."

Oropher made a considering sound, looking down at the party below.

Yes, they had long since been spotted by everyone below, and Lord Finrod even noticed them looking at him. He waved.

"That one is good with egos," Oropher said carefully, voice much lower. "He likes it when people like him, and so tries to be as likable as possible, no matter who you might be. He changes like water, to fit the needs of anyone he speaks to. And once he has entranced them, then comes the favors, both to and from, until you are ensnared in his web. It's a very pretty trap, and I must respect it, but-" He sneered suddenly. "I have nothing to say towards the deceitful. He and his brothers lied to our people once for their gain, and I do not forgive so easily."

"You sound like your mother," Nimloth said.

Oropher smiled at her like this was a compliment.

"What about Lady Galadriel?" she quickly changed the subject. "What do you make of her?"

He lapsed into silence again, considering. At long last, he said, "Your uncle is going to marry her and I am going to be a menace at their wedding."

"Oropher!" Nimloth laughed, and his façade of seriousness cracked, and then they were laughing together.

They collapsed their heads and shoulders together, giggling, and she said, "Can I help cause trouble?"

Nimloth loved, loved, loved Uncle Celeborn, but he was very silly and took himself very seriously, and Oropher said that was never a combination to celebrate. He was very fun to tease and also eternally indulgent. And he never snitched, so even if it was his wedding day, she was sure to get away with mischief.

Oropher would not get away with it, but that was how things with him and Uncle Celeborn went.

"'Course," he said, "as long as you're able to get away from your parents. Do you think if they tie the knot before you're of age, you'll even be allowed to go to the wedding?"

"Oh no," Nimloth whined, "No, Lady Galadriel doesn't have any sisters, they must allow me to attend to her at the wedding, they must. Or, I guess... do you think she will even care to remember me?"

Oropher's eyebrows furrowed and then he rapped his knuckles on her head.

"Lady Galadriel," he said, "by my estimation is the opposite of her brother. She is as straight-forward as they come. She will remember you, if only for duty. If she will care too, I cannot say. What do you even care?"

"She is family," Nimloth grumbled, crossing her legs and leaning over them to look all the way down again. Her cousins, all of them except for Oropher next to her, were so bright. They took up so much space, and she faded into the shadows.

"I don't know," she sighed into her knees, "Princess Luthien is not interested in me, so I wondered if maybe..."

"Hey, hey, hey," Oropher said, tugging on the back of her nightgown until she was sitting up again. He leaned in close to whisper in her ear, "Princess Luthien has her head stuck in Iluvatar's grand beyond. Her lack of notice is not an insult, it is just..."

Just Luthien.

Nimloth pressed her lips together tightly. When Oropher pulled back and noticed her expression, he frowned. He reached for her hair, pulled out several strands, and started to braid.

"Besides, you are young," he said, as his fingers soothingly threaded through her silver-white hair, for which she was named. "Not every adult is so gracious as me to take interest in such a little thing, with a spirit half-formed."

She half-heartedly slapped his bicep, pouting, but he just laughed and said, "Give it time, Lothig."

"It feels like all I do is give 'it' and everyone else time," she snapped, crossing her arms. "Time to be allowed to do anything, time for my relatives to care about me, time for you to come home. I want to be alive now, Oropher, not when I'm 'of age' or the war is over."

Oropher did not immediately reply. He pulled a string of dyed leather from his hair and used it to tie off the braid he'd weaved in hers. Only once he'd given her braid a slight tug for good measure did he softly say, "I understand that."

Nimloth looked up at his shadowed, far-away eyes and knew he was thinking of his mother. She who- after his father died and he was sent to Menegroth- he did not see again until he was a warrior grown. Because the border was too dangerous, Father said. Because the grief was too strong, Mother said. As far as Nimloth knew, Aunt Tanwendess had never said anything on the matter.

Nimloth reached out and grabbed Oropher hand.

"Can we go camping while you're here?" she asked, and he looked at her curiously. "If we leave now, it'll be a nice little trip, just us. And we can do whatever we want."

"Don't you want to meet your cousins?" he asked, but he was smiling, fond and happy and boyish still. "I was going to offer to introduce you."

Nimloth shook her head.

"No. I like you better."

Oropher let out another booming laugh, and then he stood. No doubt the whole court was looking at them; Nimloth could never use this hiding spot again. Oh well.

She took Oropher's outstretched hand.

"Well, how can I turn down an invitation like that? Sure, let's go camping. Auntie and Uncle can yell at me later."

Nimloth, as she frantically packed to make her escape from the city with Oropher, knew that Mother and Father would not yell. They loved Oropher and they trusted him. She'd say 'as much as she did', but that was impossible. Surely no one loved and trusted Oropher as much as her.

Unlike all her bright and fancy cousins, Nimloth knew that Oropher would never, ever let her down. And that he would love her- even if she was small and plain and trouble.

You sit by the kitchen watching the group engage in post thanksgiving dinner games, a tradition for your 2 families, Y/L/Ns and the Centineo’s. Ever since Noah and your younger brother became best friends in elementary school they were practically inseparable. So much so that the families had just decided why not throw one big thanksgiving dinner instead of doing the come to our house we’ll host next year thing.

“You okay honey?” Your mom asks

You smile “Yea!”

This would be the first year post your separation with your ex husband. It was strange territory he was your highschool sweetheart and now it sometimes felt like a part of you was missing

“You sure?”

“Yea mom! Just watching Lucas and Noah make asses out of themselves”

“HEY!” Lucas screams “I heard that!”

You smile “sorry just telling the truth!”

The night is filled with many events: games, movies, popcorn, second round of thanksgiving dinner, more games, and finally sleep.

Tomorrow was the Y/L/Ns turn to make breakfast one last big feast before the two families split apart and went their separate ways

You work in the kitchen quietly humming to RnB that played softly in the background

“Morning” you hear Noah’s groggy voice

“Kid?” he groans he hated that nickname “what are you doing up?”

In a very sleepy tone he asks “The question is what are you doing up? Its 5am and we all went to bed at like 2?”

You shrug “I am prepping for breakfast if you must know” you answer, you briefly glance at his shirtless body “so what are you doing up?” “Heard some banging had to check on the noise” “I did not bang!” you whisper harshly “I accidentally dropped the tray sorry for waking you up”

He nods understandingly “It’s cool, need help?” “Nope! Go back to bed baby boy”

He groans and throws up the peace sign, too tired to argue with you. You watch as his muscular figure disappears around the corner.

Unknown: I miss you

You roll your eyes, the real reason you were up at 5am making breakfast had nothing to do with you prepping but with your ex husband pestering you non-stop. So much that you were losing sleep. You didn’t want to tell anyone that he had started stalking you and you were positive he was standing across the street watching you in the kitchen. At least in the house full of people you felt safe.

Actually the reason you had dropped the pan was because you received the text

Unknown: You look so beautiful

It sent shivers down your spine freezing you in spot and ultimately causing you to drop the baking tray.

You couldn't’ sleep after that expecting him to pop up in your room and ultimately cause harm to you like he had threatened so much. Even the restraining orders weren’t deterring him, you knew how this story ended and you contemplated packing and moving across the country so many times but then you would have to explain why and you just didn’t know how. You were an adult like your father preached. You have to learn to manage your own problems so you are doing your best.

When morning comes and everyone is happily feeding themselves breakfast or left overs you’re brought back to reality when Noah plops down next to you

“Omg Noah! Almost spilled my coffee!” you complain wiping the droplets of coffee that were rolling down your cup

“Sleep well sleeping beauty?” he asks

You roll your eyes “fuck off kid”

“Awww, i guess that's a no” he fake pouts before taking a bite of the bacon

“Honestly kid, what are you doing here?’

“First of all stop calling me kid, and also you were looking like a sad puppy in the corner and your cousin asked me to come check on you” he motions to Lizzie

“I was not” you argue

“You were” he counters

You huff “I’m fine so you can go now”

“Orrrr”

“Or nothing” you were nursing

“Orrr I can stay here and bug you he grinned showing all his teeth

“Okay whatever” you reach over his plate and grab a piece of bacon

He pulls his plate away “Hey get your own!”

You shrug “I cooked i have dibs on everyone’s plate”

He rolls his eyes “fair enough”

“Y/N did you cut the fruit?” your dad calls to you from the kitchen “Oh yea its in the fridge hold on” you stand up and walk towards the kitchen leaving Noah where he sat

At the end of the weekend both families say their goodbye well Lucas and Noah were on a plane to NYC while the rest of you remained in California.

Noah being a semi famous actor now took Lucas with him everywhere, he gave Lucas the title of assistant manager. They would argue a lot because Lucas was in charge of his schedule and if he had to be in NYC in the morning and Miami by the afternoon thats just what he had to do. You’ve rolled your eyes at the many arguments you had to settle between them offering suggestions for Lucas to be less involved in Noah’s schedule and more involved in the background which of course they refused. Boys what can you say?

The next holiday is Christmas, something you really used to enjoy but not so much now that you were in this predicament with your ex.

“Y/N what is going on?” Lucas looks around your home “Are you not decorating for Christmas or what?” he asks as him and his friends occupy your living space

You shrug and look around “Oh I’ve just been busy Lucas didn’t have the energy”

“Wow so you’ve gotten lazy” he teases

You groan “Fuck off Lucas”

You turn to look and watch as Noah silently observes you, he always did that just watched you from afar. It wasn’t creepy just Noah being Noah.

“What’s up kid got a smart remark too?” you ask. He throws his hands up. For some odd reason he felt like the reason you provided was an excuse but he didn’t want to push it as he could see the bags under your eyes. He knew from Lucas that the divorce from your ex was taking a toll on you. Lucas had expressed concerns but never really dove into details just saying he wished you would snap out of it and forget all about your ex.

“I need help with Sarah’s (Lucas girlfriend) gift” the conversation moves on and just like that the mood switches and everything is back to being light and joyful

Another year, another year filled with you’re hoping this time more joy and spontaneity. You sigh and look down at your phone, it was new years eve 5PM if you were going to have fun you needed to leave now. Because LA traffic was not to be played around with, all that was pending was for it to get darker and that would be it! Grid lock for hours. It kind of sucked no one was available to hang out. Lucas was out of state with Sarah, your cousins were out with their husbands/boyfriends, you weren’t going to third wheel your parents, you didn’t want to go out but you had no choice as your friends had egged you on. Told you you had to get out of the house and live life, as they said, they knew what was happening they were worried about you but they had lives too.

You guys go downtown, you dress in your best attire, the best you could muster up anyway. You did a few club hopping until your final destination, the club where “Bitter Moon” an upcoming pop rock band in LA, were playing.

The space is so packed you can barely move around, you manage to get drinks and sing to the songs from their EP and some of the popular songs they covered with their own spin.

On your way back from the bathroom, you spot someone that looks like Noah ahead of you and think that it couldn’t possibly be him but decide to call his name anyway “NOAH you scream his name making him turn around

He smiles when he sees you making his way towards you leaving the circle of friends he was hanging out with. “HEEYYY, HAPPY NEW YEAR” He gives you a side hug

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE KID?” He rolls his eyes “RIGHT SORRY NOAH” you two had made a deal not too long ago that you would stop calling him ‘kid’

He chuckles leaning down to speak in your ear “I am here for Bitter Moon, my friend plays the drums”

“Oh cool! Not throwing a party?” you reference last years New Years events

He makes a face “HELL NO!” You giggle, the cops were called, it was a mess too many people had showed up, things were stolen etc etc.

“Where's your crew?” He asks

“Oh uh” you stand on your tip toes and shrug after your failure to locate them, “they are around somewhere” you point towards the neon sign “over there”

He nods drinking his beer

A popular song comes on you lose yourself in the moment singing a long

“AYYEEE look at you!” You stop and blush looking away “AYYEEE KEEP GOING!” he urges

You shake your head vigorously “No it's embarrassing”

“Why?” he mouths to you singing along as well. You shake your head feeling bashful and turn to face the band. He doesn’t push, instead he bops his head to the beat.

The song ends and the band takes a 10 minute break

“I should go back” you speak “girls are probably wondering where I am” you say as you pull out your phone “Oh actually they left, going to the next club ‘Inferno’” you chuckle as you read the group text “so i need to catch up with them”

“Orrrr” he begins to bargain “you can stay, with me” he smiles at you

“Oh well i didn't wanna ruin your chances of getting some tonight” He makes a face. You motion with your head and he follows the direction of the group he was with earlier “Those girls are giving me the death glares”

He scoffs “Fuck them i dont know them!”

“Still I should really” you step away from him slowly

He grabs your hand pulling you closer “STAY!” he nods excitedly trying to convince you “you should really stay and get some more drinks! And enjoy your new years!” he speaks with high energy

“Okay okay okay”

He pulls his arm towards him “Yesss! what are you drinking?”

“Uh I was drinking white claw”

“One white claw coming right up don’t move”

You nod and watch as he walks away you look around and boy if looks could kill they would. You knew Noah was getting more famous so of course the groupies were trying to shoot their shot and it's not like you were of any competition if they only knew you were a family friend.

He doesn’t stay gone for a long time he returns when the band starts the next set.

“They only had watermelon, yuzu and blood orange I got you the watermelon couldn’t get your favorite blackberry”

“Oh that's okay thanks ki...Noah”

He smirks as he turns to face the band, before you know it you are smooshed up against Noah. You guess its because they let more people in it was nearing midnight after all

“Oh shit. Sorry” you say as you spill white claw on him “Sorry sorry” you reach in your purse to grab napkins

“Its cool its cool, don’t worry about it”

“I’ll foot the dry cleaners bill” You offer y

“Will you relax It’s cool”

“Okay” you turn around slowly and get lost in the music again

He stands behind you and at some point snakes his arms around your stomach planting you against him so you wouldn’t get shoved around.

“Alright ladies and gentlemen boys and girls, in one minute we will be ringing in the new year and I want you to look to your left look to your right and back to your left find someone to plant a juicy fat kiss for your favorite band BITTTERRR MOOOON” the crowd goes wild you can't help but giggle.

The minute comes to an end “10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 HAPPY NEW YEAR!” Confetti drops from the ceiling along with streamers and glitter

You blow hard on the noise marker and turn to face Noah “HAPPY NEW YEAR!” You scream as Auld Lang Syne plays loudly in the background

“Come here” you read his lips right before they connect with yours (think about tabilb when Peter grabs Lara Jean and kisses her during Lacrosse practice)

“MMM!” It takes you by surprise, he isn't rough with it, in fact he kisses you gently, his arm anchoring you against his body, your hands move to his shoulders slightly pushing him away. It was brief roughly 5 seconds kiss or maybe longer or shorter, your eyes widen when he pulls away

“Wha.. Wha.. What was that?!” you ask

He shrugs “New years kiss” taking another sip of his beer

You shake your head “We shouldn’t have” god if Lucas found out he would kill you “Oh come on its new years!”

You go to take a step back but you can't. Noah dips down for another kiss this time his other hand holds your head in place so no leaning back for you.This time instead of one long kiss its a burst of short interval kisses. And for a brief moment you let yourself get lost in the sensation, so much so when he licks your bottom lip you don’t fight it instead you let him have access to your mouth. Damn his lips are soft, so soft. When he pulls away you find yourself raising up chasing his lips.

He smirks hiding his smile when you finally open your eyes

“Umm” you blush tucking the hair behind your ear. What a way to start new years that's for sure. The band continues to play music and you two say nothing else to each other instead this time he rocks your body to the music.After an hour he suggests that you two leave

“Oh what about your friends?” you ask

He chuckles “I’ve been with you for the past 3 hours I think they’ll be alright”

You nod as he grabs your hand pulling you out. You two get in an uber and he gives the driver his address. What was happening? Why did it feel like you were in a movie watching yourself? When you turn to look at Noah, he sat nonchalantly skimming his social media pages.

‘What do I do? Am I really gonna hook up with my younger brothers best friend?’ you think to yourself You begin to panic you had to find a way out of this. This wasn’t cool there's a code of ethics right? You couldn’t do this

When you arrive at his place you think to stop things right then and there say you should go home that it was all a mistake but its like your body is on autopilot and instead you follow him towards his door and inside his place. You’ve been here many times but now it felt foreign, too intimate in fact.

He sighs when he sees your expression, a sort of deer in headlights “look we don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. But we are both drunk. My feet hurt and I’m sure yours do too” motioning to your high heels.

You look down and play with your necklace “Right”

He walks past you and towards the kitchen and looks in the fridge. I got left over pizza, ice cream, frozen corn dogs, fruit salad, some pre-made meals, water kombucha, beer, wine, chips, cookies, salad mix, cheese, and dressing.

You turn to face him slowly after you text your friends letting them know you were safe

“Oh umm wine please” you slowly walk up to him.

“Pizza okay?” he was too drunk to wait for the frozen corn dogs to cook in the oven

“Yea!” You say placing your bag on the counter

“Don’t need to look like you’ve seen a ghost” he chuckles placing the pizza in the toaster oven

“Sorry” you blush as he turns to face you “just a little” you swallow “taken aback”

“Come on Y/N you know I’ve had a crush on you ever since.....shit I can’t even remember”

“Yea but I thought...”

He interrupts you “Thought what?” he straightens up and walks towards you pushing you against the counter, the height difference all of a sudden intimidates you. You who said you could fight him no matter what. 1 on 1 you could take him down.

You can’t help but feel your face flush “That it was like a highschool thing like you grew out of it” you gesture with your hands

“Well” he clears his throat and cages you in with his arms “I haven’t” he steps back a little so he could lean on them making you two eye level. “In fact it’s gotten stronger”

Your eyes widen and a meak “oh” escapes your lips

“So right here right now I’m telling you I want you” he declares

You go to say something but there are no words that you can find this is all too much.

He straightens up and looks down at you “What do you say baby?” he leans in and kisses your lips this time there's no hesitation from you in fact your arms immediately wrap themselves around his neck. He lifts you up placing you on the cool counter it startles you making you pull away you can’t help but giggle

He chuckles softly “What is it?” he asks stepping in between your legs

“I” you giggle “I don’t even know what to say” because what do you say to something like this?!

He pushes the hair away from your face “then show me”

You smile and pull him down for another kiss this time it's deeper, filled with the same desire he had for you, a deep moan rumbles from him as he pulls you closer, your legs naturally wrapping themselves around him. You two tease each other biting lips pulling hair but neither of you cross that boundary only because the toaster oven dings putting a pause to your make out session.

Noah quickly removes the slices placing them on a plate

You cover your face in disbelief and chuckle

“What is it? Why do you keep laughing?” he asks amused taking a bite of his pizza

“Lucas is gonna kill us”

He shrugs, “Let me deal with him,” he says.

This was new territory for you, it had been a long time since you were in the company of a man you most certainly didn’t think the next one would be Noah. You both agree you both needed to be sober before you ventured into the next step. However that didn’t stop the heated make out sessions nor the waking up in bed half naked the next day.
