Death Before Dishonor preview

Claudio Castagnoli vs. PAC - Claudio defends the ROH men's world title. I had been expecting Eddie Kingston to be the challenger here, but he's busy in Japan doing the G1 Climax. Ring of Honor announced Mark Briscoe for this match, but then he had to withdraw due to knee injury. Now Pac is getting the shot, two days after he and Castagnoli were on the same side in a ten-man double cage match. The two didn't get along, and Pac ended up walking out on his team, ensuring their defeat. So yeah, Claudio wants revenge.

Obviously the build for this is pretty weak, which probably couldn't be helped. The draw here isn't so much the story as the appeal of seeing two cool mean wrestlers beat the shit out of each other. I'm not sure Claudio and Pac can do anything I won't see in the G1, but it'll be fun to find out.

I don't expect a title change, or any moments that seriously convince me Pac could win. The best move is to have Castagnoli drop the belt to Eddie, probably at December's Final Battle show. The second best move is to give the title to Briscoe, for sentimental reasons. I'm sure Pac's issues with Claudio and the Blackpool Combat Club will continue beyond this match, but that's a story for AEW, not ROH.

Athena vs. Willow Nightingale - This is for Athena's ROH women's world championship. The champ already successfully defended against Willow back in March, but Willow pinned Athena on July 14 in the semifinals of the Owen Hart Foundation tournament, on her way to winning the whole thing. So this is the rubber match.

I think they've got a good thing in Athena as the heel champion who squashes everybody in ROH, and it's too soon to drop that. On the other hand, Willow is more over than her push, even when they actually push her. If she's going to be a fixture in this brand, she needs to win this title at some point. I don't see a good argument to hold off. If she loses her second title shot against Athena, there's nowhere to go except feuding with other top women in ROH, and there really aren't any other top women in ROH yet. So I think it's time.

Samoa Joe vs. Dalton Castle - Castle won a 4-man tournament to earn this shot at the ROH television title. I'm a big fan of both guys, so this is a "can I just bet that all the horses have a good time" match. But realistically, Castle hasn't had any momentum since his back injury, and that was like five years ago. As much as I'd like this match to be about him stepping back into the spotlight, it's probably just about feeding him to Joe. So I'll try not to be too sad when he gets clobbered.

Katsuyori Shibata vs. Daniel Garcia - Shibata is putting the ROH pure title on the line, which means this match will be contested under "pure rules." Under pure rules, the announcers are required to talk about rope breaks for the entire match. I'm all for seeing these two going hold-for-hold in a mat-based grappling contest, but ROH has failed to convince me that "pure rules" serves that goal.

Shibata is basically on loan from New Japan's LA Dojo, so I keep expecting this title reign to be pretty short. On the other hand, I get the feeling they're building to Nigel McGuinness coming out of retirment to chase the pure title. And if that's going to happen, I really think they should do Shibata vs. McGuinness at Wembley Stadium next month. For that reason alone I think Shibata has to keep the belt here. I mean, they could have McGuinness chase Garcia, but my gut says they won't. So my pick is Shibata to win the rope break counting contest.

Rey Fenix & Penta El Zero Miedo vs. Matt Taven & Mike Bennett vs. Chuck Taylor & Trent Beretta vs. Mark Davis & Kyle Fletcher - The Lucha Bros (Penta and Fenix) are defending the ROH tag team title in a four-way match. The first man to score a fall on any opponent will win the match and the championship for his team.

The champs haven't really done much on ROH lately. The Kingdom (Taven & Bennett) have established themselves as the gatekeepers of the brand, and it makes sense that they'll relentlessly pursue the tag belts. Best Friends (Chuck and Trent) are just sort of there with nothing better to do. Aussie Open (Davis and Fletcher) are returning to tag action for the first time since Davis was sidelined in May.

I could see any of these teams winning. The Lucha Bros have the most star power, and probably "deserve" it more. But Aussie Open are arguably a better fit with the ROH aesthetic, and the Kingdom are the ones who've actually been in the company for years. I'm always willing to see Best Friends finally win the big one but I've learned not to bet on it. I guess if I have to pick a team I'll go with the Kingdom.

Vincent & Dutch & Stu Grayson vs. Evil Uno & John Silver & Alex Reynolds - This is billed as a "fight without honor," which is ROH's term for a grudge match with no disqualifications and no count-outs. Expect the announcers to make a big deal about how nobody is expected to shake hands.

Vincent's team is the Righteous, the spooky cult group from Ring of Honor. Uno's team is (what's left of) the Dark Order, the spooky cult group from AEW. The two groups have been at odds ever since the Righteous returned to ROH in March, and things just got worse when Grayson switched sides.

Ostensibly, the Dark Order are faces in this feud and the Righteous are heels. But the Righteous really haven't done anything that bad in this storyline. Meanwhile the Dark Order have basically turned heel in AEW, ending their friendship with Adam Page and declaring that they shouldn't have gone soft. So this may just be two vicious heel teams brawling for ten minutes, which could be cool. If the Dark Order's heel turn is meant to be the start of a push, they have no business losing to the Righteous. So watch them lose to the Righteous.

Brian Cage & Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona vs. Master Wato & Ryusuke Taguchi & Leon Ruffin - Cage's team is defending the ROH trios title. The challengers are...pretty random. I mean, Wato and Taguchi were a regular tag team in New Japan a year ago, but I'm not sure what they're doing here and now, or why they're picking a fight with three big heavyweights. Maybe if they had a huge guy like Samoa Joe rounding out the team, they'd have a chance, but instead it's Ruffin, who makes Wato look like Ryback. It's not surprising that they're booking the Mogul Embassy guys in a glorified squash match, but it seems odd to fly in two guys from Japan to do it.

Komander vs. Gravity - Gravity is Bandido's brother, who has worked as enhancement talent for a couple of AEW/ROH shows. I assume he's in this spot because they wanted to do a lucha match with Komander, and Bandido's out hurt and none of the other luchadors were available. It might be cool if Gravity impresses everybody and gets a full-time job out of this match. But either way Komander should certainly win.

Shane Taylor vs. AR Fox - This is scheduled for the pre-show. As far as I know there's no storyline here. I assume the point is for Taylor to pick up a win.

Josh Woods vs. Tracy Williams - Another pre-show match. This is billed as a pure rules match, so I guess we're doing two of these on one show? Not cool. I suppose the winner will be on the hunt for the winner of Shibata vs. Garcia, so I'm thinking Woods will win.

Trish Adora vs. Leyla Hirsch - Again, this is on the pre-show. I hope Hirsch sticks around in ROH, she's a good fit for the brand. I like Adora but they haven't really given her much to work with in terms of building her up. It'd be nice if this was two top women fighting for a title shot, but it'll probably just be a showcase win for Hirsch.

Darius Martin & Action Andretti vs. JD Drake & Anthony Henry - One more for the pre-show. Darius has been teaming with Andretti ever since his brother Dante Martin got injured. The Workhorsemen (Drake and Henry) aligned with Shane Taylor a while back but I have no idea if that story is really going anywhere. Anyway, I think Martin and Andretti should win, but it could go either way.
