It’s Error this time!!
Tumblr media
His name is actually Spinner in this au. His little black bar over his face always has an emoticon on it and then one of 4 symbols. The emoticon reflects his current emotion and so does the symbol. Those symbols are <>(calm or contentedness), <3<(Anger or upset), <3(affection, love, extreme happiness), and o8<(Default, often a sign of mixed or conflicted emotions). He also has a simplified design below the cut!

Examining Socially Awkward Anime Characters
Tumblr media
Komi uses a finger gun during a scene in Komi Can't Communicate
Recently, there have been more socially awkward anime characters than before, which I've noticed as a casual anime watcher. Curious about it, I decided to check out some of these series and offer my thoughts.
Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog (it will be published there on Dec. 22) and Wayback Machine. This was the fortieth article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on May 21, 2022.
Socially awkward characters have appeared throughout anime. There are even lists of shy, lonely, and socially anxious characters. These characters are either protagonists or have supporting roles. Their social struggles often become a key part of each story.
I will look at over 20 socially awkward anime characters. The characters mentioned in this article are only a sample of a wider phenomenon. Many anime characters are insecure, quiet, don't like being around other people, or keep to themselves. I've only chosen characters in shows that I have watched to date.
This post contains some spoilers for each series I am writing about. With that, let me get started!
Komi Can't Communicate
Tumblr media
Tadano (right) tries to introduce Komi (left) to a new friend, Katai
The protagonist of Komi Can't Communicate, Shoko Komi (voiced by Aoi Koga) may be the most well-known socially awkward anime character. She suffers from extreme social anxiety and struggles to communicate. She often writes what she is thinking in a notebook.
This clashes with the fact that since she is stoic and very attractive, she remains very popular. She has been a big reason why the anime has garnered a huge fanbase. There are over 170,000 followers across three subreddits related to the series or the original manga. In the series itself, she can speak somewhat awkwardly when talking on the phone.
Through the anime she has a goal to have over 100 friends by high school graduation. She is getting closer to reaching that goal. Her first friend is a fellow protagonist named Hitohito Tadano (voiced by Gakuto Kajiwara). He often helps her communicate with others.
The series does an excellent job of showing her anxiety, through her behaviors and emotions, noting how others around her perceive them. Komi is openly described as socially anxious. As the narrator says from time to time, "When a person has extreme social anxiety, they struggle to communicate with others. Bear in mind, they only struggle to form connections, it doesn't mean they don't want to." That's something which rings true.
Aharen-san wa Hakarenai
Tumblr media
Raido (left) and Reina (right) rapping together in an attempt to communicate with one another better.
This romantic comedy centers on Raidō (voiced by Takuma Terashima) who has trouble making friends. He attempts to talk to his classmate, Reina Aharen (voiced by Inori Minase), but believes that she is ignoring him. He later comes to the realization that his fellow classmates had pushed her away. They thought she was timid, clingy, and awkward. In an attempt to bridge the gap, he tries to make Reina be more social and become her friend by any means necessary.
Raidō and Reina are different than Komi. Neither has social anxiety. Instead, Reina speaks softly and Raido's face is naturally unfriendly. She has trouble telling if she enters someone's personal space. As the anime goes forward, they become better friends. They meet other nervous characters like Mitsuki Oshiro (voiced by M・A・O), a nervous girl and childhood friend of Reina who has a crush on her.
Later, Raidō and Reina try and communicate better by rapping. To hammer the point home, Reina rides on fidget spinners in the ED. They have been purported to calm down those with ADHD or autism, even though experts reject those claims. At one point, Reina becomes obsessed, trying to perform tricks and causing little kids to become jealous.
Raidō often struggles to beat Reina in any game and continues to have misconceptions about her. This goes as far as thinking Reina is a delinquent. Although I haven't read the original manga by Asato Mizu, it likely has similar themes. Her other manga, Denkigai no Honya-san, also features a shy character and may focus on social awkwardness as well.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War
Tumblr media
This ongoing anime is a combination of romantic comedy, slice-of-life, and psychological fiction. It features an introverted, inward-looking protagonist: Yu Ishigami (voiced by Ryōta Suzuki). He has a dark-haired emoish haircut with bangs covering one eye. He is often in his own world. Even so, he keenly observes people. Still, his words clash with those on the Student Council, when he points out inconvenient or uncomfortable facts.
Yu remains afraid that Kaguka will murder him. She sometimes threatens him through her looks or comments, especially related to her crush, student president Miyuki Shirogane. Additionally, Chika, sometimes beats him up when he says inappropriate things.
Due to his sense of observation, he is one of the anime's smartest characters. He has extra skills with using numbers as the Student Council treasurer. His taciturn behavior, negative thoughts, and lack of presence, as the manga's author described him, are only part of him. It does not prevent him from going on dates or developing feelings for other students. He fits right into the student council as Kaguka is hypersensitive, Shirogane is not skilled with ordinary things, and Chika is prideful.
By the show's third, and current, season, his bangs no longer cover his eyes. It might be a sign that he is surer of himself and not as brooding and inward looking. After all, Amethyst in Steven Universe went from having her bangs cover one of her eyes to having both eyes uncovered as she gained more confidence by the final season.
In fact, in the most recent episode of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, he took the initiative. He was less socially awkward than in the past, even though this annoyed the others in the festival planning committee. He used his expertise to shoot down their ideas.
In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki
Tumblr media
Rindou nervously introduces herself to the village
The sixth episode of this ongoing comedy series, based on the manga of the same name by Sōichirō Yamamoto, introduced Rindou (voiced by Konomi Kohara). Despite prodding of those around her, she refuses to remove her mask, saying she's ashamed of her cute face. She will be a recurring character in this anime and may have a bigger role in later episodes.
Her characteristics align with others who are socially awkward. She doesn't know how to talk to the girls in the village and comes from a village populated only by men. This makes her like the technowizard princess, Entrapta, who is sweet and autistic. She also wears a mask to hide herself from others, to be within her personal world.
You could argue that Rindou, like Entrapta, is masking herself, in that she is hiding her possible autism to fit in at the risk of burnout or extreme stress. It is something which much of the art created by neurotypical people responds to. It connects with the idea that disabilities are people's superheroes. This idea could be liberating to some, but ultimately is limiting.
In the seventh episode, Rindou practices taking off her mask, wanting to fit in more. While some of the girls plot to have her remove her mask, Tsubaki reassures her, telling her that she should do it at her own pace and not force it. After the scheme by the girls is fooled, she takes off the mask and reveals her face. She is later shown with the mask, which came from the head of her previous village, on the side of her head. She tries to get closer to those in the town, even while Sazanka is jealous of how close Tsubaki and Rindou are getting.
Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club
Tumblr media
Rina hiding her face with her notebook
This music series, part of the Love Live! franchise focused on music idols, tends to have more extroverted and few socially awkward characters. One exception is shy library reader Hanamaru Kunikida in Love Live! Sunshine!! who is a gregarious introvert. More pronounced is Rina Tennoji (voiced by Chiemi Tanaka) in the ongoing series, Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, who often is too shy to show her face and covers it with a small notebook with face expressions.
This goes one step further: she wears a small monitor in front of her face and cat-eared headphones during live shows. She has a developed knowledge from taking information processing courses. Occasionally she reveals her face to people, but only in specific instances. Unsurprisingly, she's described as a "face-hiding type school idol".
Hiding the face is a form of masking. It can refer to someone changing their personality to conform to harassment, abuse, or social pressures, including hiding signs of autism. In the case of Rina, she is doing a bit of the latter, as a person who is somewhat socially awkward. Komi also hides her face partially with her notebook. So, it is not unique to Rina.
In some ways, Rina is like the masked samurai in Fena: Pirate Princess, Yukimaru Sanada. He's introverted but leads a group of samurai who ties to keep the series protagonist, Fena, safe from any harm. Unlike Rina, he does not sing. Predictably, he falls in love with Fena, and confesses his love for her in the final episode.
Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu
Tumblr media
Hitori struggles to introduce herself to her homeroom class in the first episode
This 2019 slice-of-life comedy centers around a girl named Bocchi Hitori (voiced by Chisaki Morishita). She has social anxiety and struggles with talking to others. After Kai ends their friendship, she decides to make friends with everyone in her class. But she has one problem: every time she gets excited, she passes out. This is compounded by her struggle to communicate (like Komi)!
She isn't alone in this. One of her classmates, Ito Kuri (voiced by Honoka Kuroki), who is a student librarian, is also shy. She gets her first friend by accident, Nako Sunao (voiced by Minami Tanaka) when they share an umbrella after school.
As the anime goes forward, Bocchi gains more friends, and becomes more confident in herself. She becomes friends with a supposed "loser" (Aru Honshō), a person who thinks they a ninja (Sotoka Rakita), and a lover of sweets (Peko Onaka). She also becomes friendly with a kid who comes from a wealthy family (Mayo Ojōsa), and many others.
She encounters a stumbling block in Kako Kurai (voiced by Kana Ichinose). Kako has a personal policy against becoming friends as she wants to be strong by herself. She slowly comes around to Bocchi by the anime's end. Over the course of the anime, Bocchi learns more about herself and what it means to make friends. It's a good anime for those who are socially awkward or struggle to keep friendships.
Mitsuboshi Colors
Tumblr media
Yui, one of the protagonists of Mitsuboshi Colors, acting nervously
Since the manga's author, Katsuwo, also wrote Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu, its no surprise that this 2018 slice-of-life comedy anime has similar themes. The main character, Yui Akamatsu (voiced by Yuki Takada) is extremely shy. Even so, she leads a group of three girls in elementary school, including herself, Saki Kise (Sat-chan), and Kotoha Aoyama, called the "Colors." They work together to protect the peace in the town, performing errands and deeds. A pandalike cat they name "Colonel Monochrome" often goes with them.
Despite being shy, she is the most level-headed of the three protagonists as they go on their adventures. She sometimes utters her catchphrase, "Trigonometric functions!" This earns her the respect of Saito, a local police officer. He sees her as the most reasonable of the Colors. Even so, she often goes along with the schemes of Sat-chan and Kotoha.
Unlike other characters in this post, Yui is only shy. She isn't socially anxious. During her adventures, she can easily converse with people in town. Her shyness is like Aoi Futaba in Princess Connect! Re:Dive. She is diametrically different from Fafnir in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Fafnir is a dragon who acts cold toward others, is disdainful, and distrusts humans.
Although she often wears a star on her shirt, similar to Steven Universe, she isn't autistic coded like him. That's because she doesn't always have as much self-confidence. She also doesn't experience any traumatic like Steven. Despite this, both share one characteristic: living relatively care-free lives. This is more of the case for Yui than for Steven.
Märchen Mädchen
Tumblr media
Hazuki nervous after receiving the book which allows her to enter the alternate world
In some ways, Hazuki Kagimura (voiced by Tomori Kusunoki) is like Bocchi or Yui. She is socially inept and shy. As such, she has very few friends or anyone she loves. Not surprisingly, she immerses herself in her imagination and story books, which she calls "Story Syndrome," as a big fan of fantasies.
One day, she follows a figure to a mysterious library and arrives in another world. She enrolls in a magic academy so she can become a mage (a madchen)! Although she puts this on hold for a time, she later comes back.
Despite her clear social awkwardness, a book chooses her. She becomes a friend of Shizuka Tsuchimikado, with her attraction to Shizuka growing throughout the anime. By the series end, both are either on the road to a relationship or in a relationship.
Significantly, Hazuki writes her own story. She gains her own special powers, deciding her own destiny. These powers include the ability to create a castle, a servant, change feelings of someone, or even make any wish come true.
She is not alone as a socially awkward character. Mai Sadohora (voiced by Hiyori Nitta) is shy, but dislikes malice. She knows karate and self-defense through the martial arts. There is some fan service in this anime and other issues, like occasional partial nudity of the protagonist. It is something which would require a longer review to dive deeper into the series.
In certain ways, she might share some characteristics with Kana Nakamachi. The latter character is a soft-spoken shy girl, who is often frightened, and protagonist of Kanamemo, a slice-of-life yuri comedy. Unlike Kana, she is older and has more friends.
Asobi Asobase
Tumblr media
The Student Council president rejects the typical inappropriate antics of the Pastimers Club
This 2018 surreal comedy is bizarre and made me laugh a lot at its often-absurd antics. In this milieu is one character only named "Student Council President" (voiced by Honoka Inoue). Embodying the stereotype of a shy girl with glasses, she is often quiet. She only got the position after a speech by the beauty-obsessed Vice President appeared to be threatening.
Furthermore, she tries to limit the generally irresponsible Pastimers Club, comprised of the show's three protagonists, Hanako Honda, Olivia and Kasumi Nomura. She vacillates between wanting to be friends with them and trying to undermine the club. At times, she can appear to be terrifying or condescending when she is trying to act compassionately.
The Student Council President is not socially awkward like characters in recent Western animations like Inside Job, The Owl House, Cleopatra in Space, Steven Universe, or She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Nor does she have a gentle or cool personality like characters in A Centaur's Life. Instead, she shares some characteristics with Hougetsu Shimamura in Adachi and Shimamura, who thinks socializing is troublesome. However, she doesn't focus on taking care of other people and her personality isn't as innocent.
Her character is right at home in this anime. There are characters who are childish, pretend to be something they aren't, shoot laser beams out of their butt, love the occult, and are otakus.
YuruYuri
Tumblr media
Rise leans against her senpai, Nana
This slice-of-life yuri comedy, the title which literally translates to "Easygoing Yuri", which ran from 2011-2012, 2015, ended far too soon. One socially awkward character stands out: Rise Matsumoto (voiced by Saori Gotō). Even as the head of the student council, she has very little presence. She speaks so softly that only one person can understand her: Nana Nishigaki (voiced by Ryoko Shiraishi), a teacher at the middle school. As a result, she has become the "explosive friend" of Nana, as she suffers from Nana's explosions.
Nana, who is more outgoing, is like Professor Farnsworth in Futurama or Heinz Doofenshmirtz in Phineas & Ferb. In another, she is akin to Raido in Aharen-san wa Hakarenai in that she can understand what Aharen-san is saying, even when others can't. The camaraderie that Nana and Rise have together is one of the best parts of the show.
She has no zany catchphrases or wild actions like Peridot in Steven Universe, a character often interpreted as autistic. The former is directly the case for the show's protagonist, Akari Akaza. Supposedly the main protagonist, Akari has a lack of presence unlike other characters, who comedically tease her about it.
Rise and Akari are joined by uptight and tsundere (Ayano Sugiura) or cold and distant (Chizuru Ikeda) characters. Akari nor Rise is non-talkative, making them different than the Demon Lord in The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!, to give an example.
Akebi's Sailor Uniform
Tumblr media
Akebi (left) and Minoru (right) people watching and taking notes
This recently ended slice-of-life series, with some yuri undertones, centers around Komichi Akebi (voiced by Manatsu Murakami). She attends school in sailor attire. However, the dress code of Roubai Girls' Academy, an all-girls private school, has people wear blazers instead. In the process, she stands out. Even so, she makes new friends with her bubbly personality, including some socially awkward characters.
This includes an inquisitive girl named Minoru Okuma (voiced by Konomi Kohara) who does not like to socialize. Instead, she prefers to observe other people and take notes, hoping she can use it someday. She enjoys taking notes about animal life. Then there's Tomono Kojou (voiced by Shion Wakayama) who is quiet, shy, and a bookworm. Not surprisingly, she spends a lot of time in the library as a member of the literature club at Roubai Girls' Academy.
They are joined by Ayumi Tougeguchi (voiced by Shiori Mikami), a loner and roommate of Okuma. She suffers from anxiety so severe she has to take medication. In the latter, Akebi even aids her. Despite all this, she is a member of the school's table tennis club.
Okuma, Kojou, and Tougeguchi fit in with other students who either sleep a lot, are self-conscious, or are stoic. Although I have gripes with problematic fan service in this series, this series is mostly wholesome. These characters are part of that.
Azumanga Daioh
Tumblr media
Sakaki struggles to talk about cats to her fellow classmates
This classic 2002 slice-of-life and surreal comedy has a host of socially awkward characters. Most prominent is the tall and soft-spoken girl, Sakaki (voiced by Yū Asakawa), who is uncomfortable with herself. This shyness manifests itself in her seldom speaking. Her reticence to say words is seen as cool or mysterious, even though it isn't. This contrasts with her love of cute things, like cats and cat-related paraphernalia. Sometimes she shakes when nervous, like Komi, although not as uncontrollably.
Her expressions are often misinterpreted. For instance, Kagura tries to "protect" her from cats which bite her on her hand. In fact, she only wants to pet cats on their heads. As such, she is similar to Fumi Manjōme in the coming-of-age yuri anime Sweet Blue Flowers or Sue Mitama in the slice-of-life supernatural comedy anime, A Centaur's Life.
Azumanga Daioh gained a significant following due its majority female cast. No one objectifies or demeans any other character. The series also has a queer audience because Kaorin has a huge crush on Sakaki.
Apart from Sakaki there is Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga. On the surface she might as an easily distracted and slow girl. Her mind functions differently from other people. The child prodigy, Chiyo Mihama, recognizes this. She is as smart as another socially awkward character, Chloe in We Bare Bears. There's also the awkward and strange ephebophilic teacher, Kimura, which some call pedophilic. Others say he could be a parody of the magazine that the manga, which the series is based on, ran in.
Closing thoughts
There are many other examples of shy and socially awkward anime characters. Take for example Belphegor in As Miss Beelzebub Likes, Yui Yamada in Kase-San, and Sumi Sakurasawa in Rent-A-Girlfriend. Additionally, Ian Stuart in My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!, and two characters in Strawberry Panic!, Hikari Konohana and Kagome Byakudan, are shy, timid, and socially awkward.
Even so, some argued that autism awareness in Japan is lagging, with no series having  an autistic protagonist. Unlike Western TV series, none of these characters are portrayed at "cartoonish extremes" or have their social awkwardness as a "superpower".
There are many more socially awkward characters in Western animation. There's a character in the upcoming Dead End: Paranormal Park. All the Steven Universe characters were described as neurodivergent by series creator Rebecca Sugar. But that's a discussion for another day.

dabi & shouto bonding + dabihawks, fluff
It's almost noon when Touya comes shuffling into the living room he shared with his boyfriend, PJ pants hanging low on his hips, no shirt in sight.
"Well, good mo-, no wait, good midday to me, handsome," Keigo quipped with a grin and Touya rolled his eyes.
Yeah, yeah, I'm a lazy bum, I know I know," Touya replied with a yawn and a stretch.
"We can't all just call home office and lunge around in sweats all day and call it work, yanno," he added and Keigo laughed.
"So staying up until 3 am gaming with Spinner and Tenko counts as work, now?" the hero asked with a sly smirk, and Touya sighed.
"I need a shirt for this conversation, and either their all in the wash or you stole some again, and I think we all know which one is true."
Keigo raised his eyebrows at that.
"I haven't taken any more than you've given me, I swear!" he said with hands raised in surrender, and Touya sighed dramatically.
"Well, what am I supposed to wear then?"
-
Listen, Touya loves Keigo.
Everything about him, actually.
Except for the fact that, ever since the war ended and the hero was allowed to develop his own style, that style turned out to be a mix between cottage core lesbian and confused grandpa.
Actually Touya didn't mind it when the clothes were on Keigo, he actually kinda loved it.
But while Keigo looked ridiculously hot in Touya's band shirts and big hoodies, Touya didn't quite have that same luxury.
So, there he sat, in a crowded coffee shop, a busy afternoon, out in public, with his white hair, scarred skin, piercings, tattoos, ripped black skinny jeans and... a very eclectically colored cardigan Touya suspected Keigo had dug out of a thrift store that should have been closed decades ago.
Yeah, fuck his life.
Just as the former villain pulled the bucket hat he had also borrowed from his boyfriend further down on his head in a vain attempt to hide he noticed the person he was here to meet come in trough the door.
"Shouto," Touya said out loud, raiding his hand to grab his brothers attention.
His dork of a younger brother smiled, as brightly as he ever did, and moved over to Touya quickly.
"Nii-san!" The young hero greeted and Touya huffed.
"Yeah yeah, sit down ya dork, I ordered you your..."
Touya's voice trailed off as Shouto took off his jacket.
"Todoroki Shouto, are you wearing my fucking shirt?!"
Shouto looked up at him with a hint of surprise on his face as he looked down on himself , before he nodded.
"Yes, it appears that I am," he said simply before happily taking a sip of his bubble tea.
Touya just stared at him.
"Why?" he finally asked as Shouto didn't elaborate.
Shouto took his time enjoying his tea before he answered.
"It's like a hand-over, it's normal for brothers to do, you know?" he replied with a shrug.
Touya blinked a few times trying to catch up.
"A hand... over?" he finally asked, trying his best to wrap his head around this.
He decided this was a bucket hat off situation, and just as he placed the hat down, Shouto picked ip back up and put in on his head.
"Like this, see?" the young hero said as if that answered all the questions.
Touya just stared back and Shouto sighed.
"Iida said he used to get his older brothers stuff all the time, Nii-san, I really think you're making too much out of this."
Oh.
Oh, god.
This poor, clueless, sweet bastard.
"You're talking about hand-me-downs, aren't you?" Touya finally asked, and Shouto nodded.
"Yes, that was the phrase."
Touya bit his lip, trying to figure out how to go about this without being too mean.
Look at him, all reformed and shit.
"Look Sho, I get that we have a lot of catching up to do, but if you want my stuff as hand-me-downs or whatever it'd be great if you asked first, okay?" Touya explained.
Shouto hummed.
"I must have misunderstood the tradition then, I apologize."
Touya huffed.
"It's okay, kid," he said with a small smile, and Shouto smiled back, before his gaze fell to the cardigan Touya was wearing and his brown furrowed.
"You can keep that one, though," Shouto said seriously, and Touya couldn't help but laugh out loud.
"Yeah, I don't judge ya there, kid," he replied with a grin.
Before they parted ways a few hours later Touya quickly snapped a picture of Shouto in the bucket hat to send to Keigo with a warning that he'd probably never seen that hat again.
It was handed down now, after all.

Saint Seraphina
Also known as Fina and Serafina
Born: 1238 at San Gimignano, Tuscany, Italy
Died: March 12, 1253
Feast Day: March 12
Patronage: people with disabilities, physically challenged people, spinners, San Gimignano
Saint Seraphina, an Italian Christian girl was a pious youth and diligent house keeper who helped her mother spin and sew.  At 10 years old, she endured the deaths of her parents and a paralyzing illness that confined her for the rest of her life on a bed made from a wooden pallet.  Devoted to St. Gregory the Great, he appeared to her to predict her death. She died as predicted on his feast day at age 15 and white violets bloomed from the pallet after her body was removed.

Shoto: Nii-san, did you really leave to become a villain because of dad?
Dabi: Yeah, why?
Shoto: Because I read the court statement that you wrote. Now I’m wondering if you didn’t just dropout of school and run away because you’re illiterate?
Dabi: That is uncalled for.
Shoto, reading aloud: What would you do if when you ok so he said yes would go?
Shoto: Are you trying to convince the jury you were too stupid to know terrorism was a crime?
Dabi: Spinner, you bastard! Took my plagiarism bribe and screwed me over!

Hordak's dexterity issues
Hordak's degenerative/rotting disease seems to affect his fingers. I can't recall a thread devoted to the topic, so let's peruse this in some detail. Considering the state of his forearms, his flexor/extensor digitorum tendons and the muscles affecting their operation must have deteriorated. Nerve damage must have occurred besides.
He cannot seem to grasp objects properly when not clad in his armor. For the sake of accuracy, I've asked a small number of people to test the same motion as beheld in the scene in Light Spinner where he retrieves one of his tubes. This is not a normal hand movement. Unless affected by hyperflexibility, the middle and ring fingers pursue the index when a grasping motion is commenced.
Instead, his digits appear stiff, and he expresses frustration at either his ailment in general or this loss of dexterity. I've assumed it being the latter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Catra wanders in, he manages to close his hand around the object. Therefore, he can still perform the movement, but it requires some effort. If his hands are in such a state, no wonder he utilizes an assistive device for armor assembly and dressing. Plus no scene depicts him welding or working sans the gear that restores his nimbleness. In all likelihood, he would elsewise drop objects. Typing on a keyboard or applying makeup might be post-dressing tasks.
When Entrapta wrought him the armor upgrade, I found it interesting that he first tested the deftness of his hands. As if the reduction of this capability represents a much greater loss than his main strength.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Only after this affirmation, it's time to flex the biceps! Rah!
Tumblr media
This grievance makes me wonder about his life and assignments in the Galactic Order. If mere cannon fodder on the battlefield, he likely would have relied on his physical strength more. Therefore, what did he do? Operate battle droids from afar? Program? Knit skull-patterned socks for his cadre?

Quirk Analysis: Frog (Asui Tsuyu)
The quirks from My Hero Academia have always been my favourite bit, so I'm gonna have some fun doing some Izuku style quirk breakdowns. The science here will be both real and theoretical. Feel free to use any of this in fics. My science background is basically exclusively biology so expect that to be the basis for any of my fake quirk science. Have a quirk you wanna see next? Just tell me!
First things first - her quirk counselor should be dragged out into the street and shot - her quirk isn't frog - it's chameleon.
Now, you may say "but she looks like a frog" and true! She does! But so do her parents - Tokoyami's bird mutations are unrelated to his quirk, as are Spinner's Lizard-like traits, and were inherited from one or both parents. I'm sure Asui's are too, given both her parents have frog/toad like traits (another thing - frogs and toads aren't distinct types of animal, they are the same animal with different names based typically on aesthetics but without any taxonomic background. but. I digress.) Her other frog-like traits (regurgitating her stomach, mild toxins, etc) are likely also inherited mutations.
The tongue of a frog is attached at the front of the mouth, giving in the ability to sort of flap forward and back. It's very soft, sticky and actually rather short, but that forward attachment lets it extend quickly and a decent distance. This is nothing like Asui's long, flexible and muscular tongue. It more closely resembles a chameleon tongue, sans the bony support it has on the end, though she does seem to have a similar tongue pad. I'd actually say its a pretty even mix between the musculature and dexterity of a human tongue.
Her camouflage ability - its true some frogs can change colour, but its typically from one standard colour to another, often during the breeding season. A fine control over colour change is seen in chameleons, though its a communication tool rather than a camouflage. She has the ability to camouflage her uniform too, so we are just going to have to assume that's due to a DNA infused fabric or some sort of inbuilt translucency, otherwise she has a mild light manipulation quirk in addition to everything else and I don't want to think about it.
The colour change mechanism in chameleons is really cool too! They have a few layers of cells in their skin called chromatophores, each layer is either pigmented or reflects a certain colour of light (they have names, but just know the colours are red, yellow, black and blue, like a standard printer (yes i know its cyan and magenta not blue and red but my point still stands). The chromatophores can expand, showing more of their colour, or shrink, showing less giving us a a shade through optical colour mixing!
Blue is the colour that's only reflected light, not a pigment, it's colour is purely structural. This is true in all animals! Any time you see a blue animal (or admittedly a green one) the blue on them is due to a structural quality of their skin/scales/feathers. This is not true for plants (and possibly invertebrates? i don't know much about them).
So, basically, a more accurate description of her quirk is 'chameleon-like traits with frog-like vestigial mutations'.
Some extra questions
can she breathe through her skin? If she can, she'd be able to stay underwater/holding her breath much longer than any standard human, though it wouldn't be sustainable (surface area to volume ratio - she doesn't have enough skin to get enough oxygen to fulfill her needs).
cold triggers an involuntary hibernation - the idea she can hibernate at all is just wild. It requires a lot of very specific adaptions to do so, which we'd have to assume her quirk gave her. This means her heart-rate and metabolic rate can slow dramatically without any ill-effects - chilling her would be an effective way to stop her from bleeding out, or a way to conserve energy during a famine/siege.
some frogs which hibernate in areas that reach below freezing have natural mechanisms which prevent damage to tissues when frozen - a natural antifreeze. she should be highly resistant to frostbite and death by hypothermia. you could also cryogenicly freeze her and then defrost her at a later date.
chameleons can control both eyes individually, giving them a great degree of vision while sacrificing depth perception - could tsuyu? given practise, any human can do it, so it's not impossible, but the increase in visual field would be limited and not particularly practical.

Could you do a love triangle between reader, Steve and Eddie? Like she can't decide who she's more attracted too and spin the bottle goes south really quick. Because they're jealous when someone dares the reader to kiss the other or someone else.
author's note: uh, yeah...i got carried away. this took on a life of it's own. i also got halfway through and tumblr deleted it and i had retype all of it, so if it seems a little disjointed, i'm sorry. hopefully it isn't too noticeable
cw: 18+ (to be safe), background!ronance, lots of making out and some suggestive touching, but nothing too crazy. there's not any interaction outside of the reader between steve & eddie, other than talking, ect, but i tried leaving the ending a little ambiguous for a reason :p

You weren’t entirely too sure how you ended up in this situation—scratch that—you were definitely aware of how, but why was the real issue. A small group of teenagers huddled around a fire during of those infamous senior year parties, drinking until you couldn’t see straight and making far too many irrational decisions—which is the how on you ending up here, staring directly at the two boys you couldn’t stop thinking about, sans the few other kids who didn’t really matter—not to you, anyways. You hadn’t spoke to half these kids the entire school year, but spin the bottle was harmless, practically child’s play. What was the worst thing that could happen?
“So, how are we doing this?” Steve asks after a long silence. Everyone shares a glance around the circle, not a single word spoken. “Come on, at least one of you has to have some idea of how to play.”
You sigh, taking the bait. “Let’s do—spinner chooses the person to kiss for whoever it lands on. Fair enough?” There’s a collective shrug from everyone in response. “Great—I’ll go first.” No one argues against it.
It lands on Nancy first, who takes a small sip of her beer—liquid courage, maybe? Though, she already looked like she been through a few by the slight flush in her face. You glance over at your quirky, fast talking friend and an idea strikes you.
“Robin.” You grin, staring Nancy down. Part of you expects Nancy to back out, but she crosses the path to Robin, who sitting beside you. It’s a quick kiss—close mouthed and simple. Nancy offered a comforting smile to her friend before turning on her heels and returning to her seat—and if it weren’t for the four beers Robin had consumed in the time you had been here, she’d be shaking in her converse after being kissed—and by Nancy Wheeler, of all people. You nudge her shoulder comfortingly, watching the blush creep up her neck toward her face. “Alright, who’s next?” Robin asks, desperately hoping to avert the attention away from her.
A young blonde girl who’s name you couldn’t remember spun the bottle, landing on Jason, and to no surprise—she picked herself. You’ve never been more happy that Chrissy wasn’t much of a partier, she didn’t deserve this—Jason really didn’t deserve her. You couldn’t be bothered to watch, eyes averting to Eddie who was just as equally uncomfortable, but it didn’t seem like it was for the same reason. He rarely ever took part in group stuff or socialized outside of his D&D club—but he had you, Nancy, Robin, and Steve to thank for finally helping him branch out—even if it was against his own will most of the time.
Jason took the next turn, spinning the bottle. It spun and spun, lasting for what felt like hours until it stopped on you. You looked at Jason, bracing for whatever stupid choice he was about to.
“Harrington.” He says smugly, smirk covering his annoying face. “You get to kiss Harrington.”
Steve eyes you wearily, immediately feeling uncomfortable with all eyes on him. Luckily, it wasn’t that big of a deal. Had he been the Steve of two years ago, he would’ve had no shame, kissing you square on the mouth in front of the entire school if he needed to, just to prove a point. But this Steve, he was hesitant. You had been through a lot, together and apart.
“Lucky me.” You joke, flashing a sweet smile in Steve’s direction. You chug the rest of the beer, throwing the bottle off toward the other growing pile of empty bottles. You contemplate whether a simple kiss was enough, but the way Jason was staring you down—you just had to stick it to him, shove it right in his face.
Steve’s leg spread slightly as you moved forward, allowing you the space you needed to take a careful seat on his leg, one arm hung loosely around his back. “You can hate me later.” You whisper, hand coming up to cradle the side of his face before leaning in, pressing you lips against his own with all the confidence in the world.
You really don’t expect the pressure the Steve returns, parting your lips slightly. But, he seems to catch on to why you were putting on such a show—he would play along either way. And even if you did have the teensiest of crushes on Steve, you would never find the courage to act on it alone. Steve spent all of his time talking about girls that there was no reason for you to be anywhere on his radar. He sighs quietly, bring you in closer, hand gripping onto your waist gently.
Jason clears his throat awkwardly, “If you two want to get a room that’s fine.” Of course the jerk couldn’t take what he wanted to dish out. You pull away slowly, eyes immediately connecting with his.
“Sorry. Who’s next?” You ask simply, standing to smooth out your shirt where it had ridden up from Steve’s hand. “Robin?”
“Me?” She asks, voice shaken. Robin was always so inherently nervous, but it was part of her charm. "I, uh--Okay."
You could hear a pin drop as soon as it landed on Eddie, the entire group snapping their attention in his direction. He was fiddling with the neck of the bottle, not realizing everyone was staring at him until Steve nudges him.
He laughs lightly, not even the slightest bit uncomfortable. You would never understand how easily he brushed everything off. "Choose wisely, Robin." He teases, pointing a tantalizing finger her direction. Robin forces a laugh, eyes wandering around the group slowly, categorizing every person.
Not Jason, not Nancy, not to mention all the other kids who were vehemently making an effort to avoid Robin's gaze. She stops on Steve for half a second, considering--before she snaps to you. She mumbles a sheepish, "Sorry--I love you, please don't hate me."
But, there wasn't any reason to hate her. It was a game--a silly, stupid little game, right? You shrug, throwing your arms up in the air. "Rules are rules." You assure her, "Pucker up, Munson."
Much similar to your approach to Steve, Eddie widens his legs. But, he's perched higher, allowing his head to be level with you while he sat. "It's an honor, sweetheart." His voice dripping with honey, warm and entirely too welcoming--and now you really can't ignore the shiver that runs down your spine. It wasn't the alcohol this time, not even in the slightest.
He yanks you toward him gently, fingers carding their way through the hair at nape of your neck, pulling you in for a slow, searing kiss. You yelp quietly at the action, caught off guard by the way Eddie manhandled you into place--not that you were complaining.
The kiss quickly turns into something else, a mess of tongues and not much else. It was probably time to cut off the alcohol. Robin whistles loudly from behind you, the rest of the teenagers joining in quickly, pulling you both out of whatever trance you had both entered. You quickly stepped back from Eddie, pointedly avoiding his eyes--unfortunately, locking right onto Steve's. Except he's not looking back, he's staring directly at Eddie. And it's then, in the midst of all your drunkenness, that your existential crisis hits you.
Steve was jealous and Eddie wanted to make Steve jealous. It had worked perfectly, assuming by the look on Steve's face. But, what doesn't make sense, is why Steve couldn't bare to look at you now. Eddie coughs softly, causing you to separate further. "Sorry, sweetheart. Kinda got ahead of myself." You wanted to blame it on the alcohol, but it couldn't have been more obvious--the problem was literally staring you directly in the face.
They were both jealous. They couldn't even share a glance with each other anymore, after an entire night of pointless chatting, it was like they couldn't be on further points of the universe, all over a harmless game.
"Well, I think that's enough for one night." Nancy finally says, breaking the tension that had been created between the three of you. "Robin?" She asks, making an effort to hope she would catch on.
"Yep!" She claps, standing up from her spot and immediately snatching Nancy away from the group. "God, please fill me in on whatever is going on with those two." Robin whispers into your ear before she finally flees, following Nancy toward the drink table, against her better judgement.

After a few minutes of silence and stolen glances between each other, no one speaks. You sigh loudly, hands thrown out to your side. "I'm not dealing with you two. I'm not--I'm just gonna go find somewhere to sober up." You weren't sure what had brought out the behavior from Steve--well, Eddie had--but, you hadn't done a single thing to him. And Eddie, he couldn't even be bothered to look Steve's way.
You turn, stomping off into the deep brush of forest, desperate to escape the chaos of the party and calm your nerves. "Wait!" You hear Steve call out, but you don't stop. To no one's surprise, Steve trails closely behind--a quiet Eddie sticking behind, staring at the dirty, scuffed white sneakers he wore.
"Wait, please," Steve's voice is softer this time, but louder, void of all the loud music and chatter. He's staring at you with his soft, brown eyes--the type of look that would make any girl melt. But not you, not now, "stuff got weird back there, I'm sorry."
"Stuff got weird? Is that the excuse you're using?" You ask, entirely unconvinced by what he was telling you. "So, you staring down Eddie like you wanted to murder him isn't important? I shouldn't be worried about that?"
Steve looks away, jaw clenching. "I didn't think it would feel weird. But, I couldn't help it." He replies lamely, still not looking your way.
"Couldn't help what?" You ask, arms crossing over your chest, "Acting like a complete douche? It was a game, Steve." But, you were far past the point of it just being a game--you knew it was more to Steve, maybe not before, but definitely now.
"Just a game? So when you had your tongue shoved down Eddie's throat, that was just a game?" Steve turns toward you, eyes narrowing. You set yourself, brows furrowing in anger.
"So, you are jealous." Steve shakes his head in frustration, back turned toward you. "You're jealous that I kissed Eddie? Steve, I kissed you too, how does that make any sense?" He didn't even have the courage to look at you now, even after being so confrontational. "Steve, seriously?"
"Fuck this." He snaps, turning on his heels and stalking toward you, legs hitting the back of the worn out picnic table, sending you stumbling back, arm extended out in an effort to catch yourself, but Steve's hands are around you before you can even think, pulling you into him.
You hesitate for a split second, seeing his eyes scan over the expanse of your face, silently checking if you were okay--you were furious, but you couldn't help but want to lean in further, the tingle of alcohol filling your body. You sigh into Steve's mouth the moment it touches yours, immediately wrapping your arms around the expanse of his neck, allowing his hands to slip under your thighs and force you to be fully seated on the table now, wrapping your legs around his hips.
His tongue traces a line against your top lip, idle hand squeezing at the soft flesh of your waist, before delving into your mouth like he was a man dying of thirst, ready to bleed you dry. You fight back, lips pressing against his in an effort to gain an upper hand, fingers gently pulling at his hair. Steve moans outwardly, a filthy laugh slipping from his lips at the effort you were giving. "I guess I had a reason to be jealous, yeah?" He asks teasingly, his voice low and soft, only for your ears.
"Shut up." You bite back, pulling him back in for another kiss, leaving you practically breathless.
"Well, seems you two had a couple issues to work through." A voice bleeds through the trees, the familiar crackle of leaves coming closer and closer until..."Didn't think you had it in you, Harrington."
"Eddie." It's a warning. He knows it.
Eddie throws his hands up in defeat before resting them behind his back, slowly stepping closer. Steve was still pressed between your legs, but both of you were glued on Eddie and that stupid smirk he had.
"Don't act so innocent, sweetheart." He chides, his voice soft but condescending in it's tone. "You knew exactly what you were doing."
A step closer, than another, until he's practically kneeling on the bench beside you both, only a few inches away. "Steve's definitely got it out for you--problem is, I do too."
It couldn't have been more obvious, but the reality of hearing it fall from Eddie's mouth has your heart skipping a beat. Two of you bestfriends, two people you loved--it should feel wrong.
Eddie lets out a short chuckle, eyes dark, not soft like they usually are. He wasn't mad, you've known him long enough to understand what that looks like, but this--it was something else entirely. He leans in slowly, lips brushing the shell of your ear.
You were too hyperaware of your position now--Steve crowded over you, Eddie pushed in beside you. Steve hadn't even bothered to move, to enraptured by the show Eddie was putting on, almost like he was amused by it. You glance over at Steve, his mouth hung open slightly, still caught up in all the emotion of the moment, his grip never faltering.
"You think Harrington likes to watch? Or maybe he'll join in?" Eddie asks teasingly, eyes glancing toward Steve. Steve's eyes flit toward Eddie quickly, before returning to your own, eyes glossing over slightly. "He does get a little feisty when he drinks, doesn't he?"
"Eddie, just get to the point." You beg tiredly, glancing up toward him now. Eddie smiles, but it's slight, barely noticeable at all. He's thinking, contemplating. But, it doesn't take long before Eddie's leaning forward, chin grasped between his fingers in an effort to maneuver your face toward him. It's surprisingly gentle, despite how aggressive it would look to anyone passing by, luckily you three were completely alone.
"Just couldn't resist another taste, sweetheart." Eddie flirted entirely to well, it was one of his more annoying traits. He flirted with everyone, anything, it wasn't something you ever put much thought into. But, this--this was dirty, this was real. "I'll let myself regret it in the morning."
But, it's you who closes that gap, hand reaching up to graze the side of Eddie's face, fingers catching in one of his curls. Steve's grip on your waist tightens, but he doesn't move, doesn't let go. He hasn't even made a sound. Eddie licks into your mouth, desperate for more of you, teeth grazing against your bottom lip, nipping gently. Eddie was messy with passion in the way that Steve was slightly more coordinated--and the idea that you were even comparing the two was insane, but that was a thought for a later time. There were more pressing issues at hand--like, Eddie pulling away to suck at a particular spot on your neck, allowing you to finally lock eyes with Steve again.
"Can I kiss you?" His voice was rough, eyes drawn to where Eddie was sucking along your neck. You couldn't even be bothered to answer, nodding quickly in response. He pulls you in carefully, the hand that wasn't holding your waist a featherlight touch against your thigh, pulling your leg higher up his hip. He didn't seem to mind that Eddie wanted to join in, but he wanted to make sure his presence was still known. Not like you could forget it--this would be burned into your mind forever.
You sigh, desperate for more and more touch, from either of them. It was driving you wild, the way Eddie was whispering in your ear, taking the time to claim up your skin with his own mouth, all while being devoured by Steve’s, his tongue breaching past your lips, desperate to pull any little sound he could out of you. Words were pointless, you couldn’t even form one. It wasn’t like you were drunk enough to the point where you couldn’t make a rational decision, not that anything was making sense right now, but you were definitely aware.
“Switch me, Harrington.” Eddie sighs out, hand reaching around to grip at the thigh that Steve wasn’t occupying, squeezing at the sensitive flesh. You whine softly, the cold sting of his rings a very prominent reminder. This was Eddie, your best friend, and Steve—also your best friend—how were you going to recover from this?
Steve doesn’t put up a fight, surprisingly, switching with Eddie quickly, hand wandering up your chest, slipping under the thin material of your shirt. “This okay?” He asks into crown of your head, mouth buried into your hair, squeezing at your breast, over the flimsy bralette that covered them.
“So okay. So much better than okay.” You confess, pleasure having taken over your rational thinking completely. You catch the glance that Eddie sends Steve's way, watching his hand disappear under your shirt. And for a split second, Steve locks eyes with him. They could've buried you six feet under at this point, not even feeling like you were in control of yourself anymore. But, the feeling of Eddie's lips brushing against your own has you jolting back to reality, your hand coming up to push his hair out of his face, delving into his mouth, a sloppy mess of tongue and spit, just like before.
It was a stark contrast, the way Eddie was ready to devour you whole, compared to Steve, who was sure of himself, but never taking a step too far without checking in with you. It had you reeling, two of the boys you care about most, drawing sounds out of you that you had no idea existed. You had to stop this at some point, before you three woke up the next morning, unable to look at each other.
You sighed, reaching back to rub tenderly at Steve's arm, pulling his attention away from where his face was buried in your neck, barely grazing Eddie's, but it's enough to interrupt him. He pulls back, eyes softer now.
"We have to stop." You say, regretfully. As much as you wanted to let the alcohol think for you, some things just couldn't get out of control, not this. "We can't do this."
They both pull back slowly, slightly dejected. "Sorry." Steve says softly, attempting to subtly adjust the front of his pants, but he fails.
"Damn, Harrington." Eddie laughs, finally pulling back, fishing his pack of cigarettes out of his pocket. "You just keep surprising me."
"Shut up." Steve shoots back, but there's no real emotion behind it. He almost laughs at the absurdity of the situation, not having fully processed everything either.
"I need to get back before Robin comes looking for me." You tell them both, the flick of Eddie's lighter louder in the silence that had settled.
"Eh, I don't know about that." Eddie gives you a playful look, taking a long drag from the cigarette. "She might be a little busy."
"With?" You ask, eyeing him carefully.
"Let's just say, Wheeler was pretty eager to run off with her earlier," He glances over at Steve, then back at you, "and I definitely didn't catch them making out over by the parking lot."
"Damn, I didn't think Robin had it in her." Steve comments offhandedly, seemingly proud of his friend.
"God," You sigh, rubbing your hands over your face tiredly, "this is the last party I'm ever tagging along on."
"Probably a good idea," Eddie says, smiling down at you, "you might end up falling in love with us." It's a lame attempt at a joke, but the way your heart flutters scares you.
"Yeah." You force a laugh, pushing yourself off the table and attempting to walk back toward the wild group of drunk teenagers. The boys trail closely behind, exchanging glances between each other unbeknownst you. Steve shakes his head in disbelief.
"Hey!" You hear Robin yells, jogging toward you. Nancy was close behind her, an obvious pep in her step. You gave Robin a suspicious look, eyeing her up and down. "So, these two ever stop acting so grumpy?"
"Yeah." You say slowly, glancing over at Nancy, who was forcing herself to hide the obvious smile on her face. "They'll be okay, we talked it out."
"Good, at least they finally figured their shit out." Robin whispers to you, glancing up at the two boys who were both wearing the same pair of shit-eating grins on their face at the sight of their other two friends.
"I could say the same for you."
The look on Robin's face is priceless, sending you running in the direction of Steve's car at the startled yell of your name. "She's gonna kill you for that." Eddie comments, gasping for breath when you finally come to a stop, arm draped over your shoulder gently.
"I told you, she just needed a nudge." Steve smirks, jingling the keys to his car in front of you. "Need a ride?"
It didn't matter if you three ended up in the back of Steve's car that night, somehow in the same situation as earlier, you could regret it in the morning. But truthfully, that wasn't the last time—and none of you ever regretted it.
