Tw: mass shooting mention, homophobia mention, violence mention

On June 12, 2016, a man opened fire at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. He killed 49 people and injured 53 more before he was killed by police. I will not include his name in this post, as his memory is not what I wish to honor. I wish to pay respects to the victims of that violent night, and I will be listing their names as a way for anyone who reads this post to remember them. None of them deserved the violence and inhumanity that they experienced.

I am writing this post as a way to honor the victims of that night, and because I wish to remember them. I want to remember that these people lived and breathed within my lifetime. I was 12 years old when the shooting happened, and I remember sitting on the couch and watching the news. I wanted to cry out of grief and fear. But all I could do was sit in silence because my family did not know I was queer and would not have understood if I tried to explain why I was grieving for those people that died. I knew from a very young age that there are people in this world that hate people like me. I knew that I would experience hate. And I knew that violence against people like me happened, but that day was the first day I was scared to be myself, and it was the first day I was scared for everyone like me.

I am older now, and I know that violence and hatred have not gone away, and I don't know if they ever will. I would be lying if I said I don't still feel afraid sometimes, but I know that I am stronger now as a person, and I know that the LGBTQIA+ community is stronger too.

I will list some links to LGBT+ charities and organizations below if anyone would like to donate to honor the memory of those we have lost.

I have loved the Mission Impossible series since the beginning, and this is no exception. Tom Cruise still has it as Ethan Hunt. This movie plays around with the real threat of AI, which scared President Biden. This movie is the perfect way to showcase just how terrifying AI can be, while also being a fun action packed movie.

This movie will leave you gripping on your arm rest as you watch the intense thriller portions. While I may not be a fan of Haley Atwell’s character (and she is in here a lot), I can overlook that for more Benji (love him) and the other characters. I cannot wait for the sequel to come out, but until then, I’ll be patiently waiting.

Barbie (Released July 21st)

Now, onto the powerhouses of the summer. First, I want to talk about Barbie, which I watched second after Oppenheimer. Barbie was an amazing movie! I loved everything about it. From the perfect Barbie and Ken castings to the story of Barbie learning about the real world was something I didn't know I needed.

I have been a woman studies student for a while, and this movie literally answers everything that we discuss in our classes. I remember taking my boyfriend to watch this during the iMAX rerelease, and he cried during the montage part, and he squeezed my hand. He loves the movie, I love the movie, it’s great.

Oppenheimer (Released July 21st)

Oh, Oppenheimer. What a powerhouse. Fun fact, I did a History research project on Oppenheimer with two other classmates. We won our county’s competition. My portion was on the aftermath of the bombings, which included the Strauss’ hearings and the security clearance meetings. This movie was a masterpiece, visually, musically, every aspect was created with such care.

And to everyone who thinks this movie is pro bomb, rewatch it. I promise you it is not. If you rewatch it and still come to that conclusion, I don’t know how much else to tell you than...you're dumb, I don’t know. Another fun fact, the first time I watched this, a guy gave me COVID.

Blue Beetle (Released August 18th)

Blue Beetle, the beginning of the James Gunn led DC Universe. Honestly, this is a great one to start on. Sure, it is a little predictable with the plot, what really sells it is Jaime (Xolo Maridueña) and his relationship with his family. This movie would not be what it is if it were not for the supporting casts’ relationship with Maridueña.

Maridueña also excels in this role as Jaime. I haven’t watched Cobra Kai, which is what he is known for, but I am completely sold on him just from this performance alone. He becomes the hero that not only his family needs, but the DC universe. I am disappointed it didn’t do as well as it deserved, so if you haven’t watched it yet, WATCH IT!

Five Nights at Freddy’s (Released October 27th)

Oh my gods, Five Nights at Freddy’s. I have loved the series since its release in 2014, which is where I was introduced to Markiplier. So, since I was a big fan of the game, I have been waiting for an adaptation forever. Honestly though, I was concerned as to how they were going to do it, since there wasn’t really a cinematic story when it came to the first game. I mean, the first Game Theory video on Five Nights at Freddy, MatPat linked it to a real Chuck E Cheese Massacre. What they came up with was not what I was expecting in the best way possible.

This was a crazy ass movie, and it needed to be. Also, love that Living Tombstones had their song in the credits, I still listen to that song to this day. Along with that, Josh Hutcherson is amazing in this movie, carrying it, and my favorite, Matthew Lillard, steals the show. One critique I must say is that I wish they didn’t share that he was Purple Guy, honestly. Seeing the reveal would have been incredible, and with him saying his iconic line, it was a masterpiece.

The Boy and the Heron (Released December 8th)

Director: Hayao Miyazaki

The Boy and the Heron is one of, if not, the best animated film of the year. I love it so much, and hope to one day watch the sub version. This is an amazing story that shows the journey of a boy going through life in the wake of his mother’s passing. He ventures into a mysterious realm to save his stepmother. I love Miyazaki films, and this is no exception.

He brings it in this film, especially casting Robert Pattinson as the titular Heron for the English dub. If nobody told me that it was Pattinson, I would not be able to tell. This movie relies on many different characters and the way they interact with the titular Boy, Mahito. It is honestly a joy to watch, and while it is a little jarring to hear some familiar voices in there, it doesn’t take you out of the movie.

This series never ceases to catch my attention. While this installment might be weaker than ones before it, I believe it is still an entertaining movie that will keep you entertained.

The Marvels

The latest movie in the MCU was a fun, action packed film. Iman Vallani is a standout in this movie, carrying it on her shoulders. It was also nice to see Zawe Ashton, Tom Hiddleston’s fiancee, in a role.

Air

This movie based on the Air Jordan shoes is an interesting movie that showed the legacy of the shoe that became one of the best selling shoes in the world. I would give this another watch on a rainy day.

Quiz Lady

This straight to Hulu movie brings Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as sisters trying to get their dog back by going on a quiz show. This is a cute movie, which especially shows just how far siblings are willing to go for one another.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Indiana Jones’ latest adventure was an action filled, well, adventure. I really enjoyed it, but this movie also suffered from an unlikeable sidekick in the form of Phoebe Waller-Bridges character.

The Iron Claw

A heartbreaking movie that I had known nothing about going in, and I was devastated by the end, crying until I had no more tears to give. Also, Zac Efron is unrecognizable in the role as Kevin Von Erich. Best role he has ever done, in my opinion.

X cierto..en MAZATAN en 2002 vi x TV como ganaba REAL MADRID la copa INTERCONTINENTAL al oLIMPIA de ASUNCION [=ASCENSION DE LA VIRGEN] con el argentino PUMPIDO de entrenador que cuando era portero se le engancho el anillo de CASADO en la RED y se arranco un DEDO.

..y en 2019 vi como AJAX le marcaba 4 goles en el BERNABEU a COURTOIS [q cuando era portero de ATLETICO MADRID y ganó en el BERNABEU la COPA DEL REY de 2013 al REAL MADRID yendo yo..lo celebró en la PUERTA DEL SOL diciendo SALTA PEQUEÑO KANGURO Y AL MADRIDISTA QUE LE DEN POR EL CULO]..al q por entonces ALBA CARRILLO dijo que tenía la BRAGUETA MUY SUELTA y fotografiandole nada más volver de MEXICO al pasar con la moto cuando firmaba autógrafos en VALDEBEBAS o fabrica del REAL MADRID.

Por cierto ..en el accidente con mi BMW [con el q recogí CAJAS DE AGUA tras la carrera en Isla de la CARTUJA en la q escuche a CHAYANNE al pasar x Auditorio al aire libre de ROCIO JURADO=27_9_2002].. comprado en calle SALVA_TIERRA iba Jaime DE ROQUE [=ESTAR DORMIDO] al q no le pasó nada

Há 20 anos, Maria Rita irrompia como furacão na música brasileira com antológico primeiro álbum

Lançado em 9 de setembro de 2003, o disco firmou Marcelo Camelo como compositor na MPB e revelou uma cantora que já nasceu grande.

♪ MEMÓRIA – Nascida em 9 de setembro de 1977, Maria Rita Camargo Mariano faz hoje 46 anos. Há exatos 20 anos, a cantora paulistana festejava o 26º aniversário com a edição do primeiro álbum, Maria Rita. Lançado com toda pompa pela gravadora Warner Music em 9 de setembro de 2003, o disco fez com que Maria Rita irrompesse na música brasileira com força de um furacão.

É fato que a cantora já tinha entrado em cena em 2002 com aparições em discos de Chico Pinheiro (Meia noite, meio dia) –guitarrista com quem Maria fizera os primeiros shows – e do padrinho artístico Milton Nascimento (o revigorante álbum Pietá).

Contudo, apesar de ter sido premiada como a “revelação musical” de 2002, foi somente com a edição de Maria Rita, álbum gravado com produção musical de Tom Capone (1966 – 2004), que o chamado grande público tomou conhecimento e consciência da existência de cantora igualmente grande que pareceu já ter nascido pronta.

Cantora que era filha da maior, Elis Regina (1945 – 1982), o que deixou a sensação de que, em requintada trama do destino, a vida amenizava um pouco a saudade que o Brasil sentia de Elis ao apresentar Maria Rita. Até porque, sem jamais ter soado como genoma nesse momento inicial, mas tampouco sem conseguir ofuscar o imperativo do D.N.A., Maria Rita ecoou Elis no primeiro álbum.

Sem falar que, em outro lance inusitado do destino, dois compositores apresentados no último álbum de Elis – Jean Garfunkel e Paulo Garfunkel – reapareceram no primeiro disco de Maria Rita como autores do jazzy blues Não vale a pena.

Outro detalhe curioso: uma das duas músicas alocadas como “faixas interativas” – termo atualmente risível, mas moderníssimo naqueles tempos em que a internet ainda tinha alcance limitado – era Vero, parceria de Murilo Antunes com Natan Marques, músico e compositor também presente no derradeiro LP de Elis.

Ao mesmo tempo em que se conectou intuitivamente com a mãe, Maria Rita começou a procurar a própria turma. Foi na voz dela que Marcelo Camelo se afirmou como compositor além do grupo Los Hermanos.

Recorrente no repertório do álbum Maria Rita como compositor de três das 15 músicas, Camelo forneceu as inéditas Santa chuva (balada densa e dramática) e Cara valente (samba leve, até hoje presente nos roteiros dos shows da cantora) e teve a canção Veja bem, meu bem (2001) regravada por Maria Rita dois anos após o registro fonográfico original da banda Los Hermanos em ação que popularizou a música entre o público da MPB.

Equilibrando o peso e a honra de ser filha de Elis, Maria Rita se impôs instantaneamente em cena com álbum coeso em que amaciou o peso roqueiro de Agora só falta você (Luiz Carlini e Rita Lee, 1995) – sucesso da fase Tutti Frutti da discografia de Rita Lee (1947 – 2023), de quem a cantora também regravou Pagu (2000), parceria de Rita com Zélia Duncan – e acentuou a sofrência sensual do bolero cubano Dos gardenias (Isolina Carrillo, 1947), cantado no original em espanhol.

Do México, veio como inspiração La bamba, tema folclórico que serviu de base para Milton Nascimento harmonizar A festa, música inédita dada pelo compositor a Maria Rita.

Entre regravações de Menina da lua (Renato Motha, 1992), de Menininha do portão (Paulinho Tapajós e Nonato Buzar, 1969) e da então recente Lavadeira do rio (Lenine e Bráulio Tavares, 2002), Maria Rita apresentou música inédita de Cláudio Lins, Cupido, reacendeu Estrela, estrela (Vitor Ramil, 1981) e tomou para si Encontros e despedidas (1981).

Música de Milton Nascimento e Fernando Brant (1946 – 2015) lançada há então 22 anos por Simone, Encontros e despedidas se tornou emblemática na voz de Maria Rita, a ponto de a parte com vocalize da gravação ter sido incorporada à canção a partir de 2003.

Para muitos ainda o melhor disco da cantora, que se converteria com sucesso ao samba em 2007, o álbum Maria Rita completa hoje 20 anos sem perda de viço.

Também lançado em países da Europa e da América Latina, além de ter feito imenso sucesso no Brasil com vendas que alcançaram o patamar do milhão de cópias, o disco ainda permanece como uma das mais vigorosas estreias fonográficas de um artista brasileiro em todos os tempos.

Os efeitos do furacão ainda são sentidos na música brasileira.
