Clark and Kon react to Autistic Reader.

So, you can 100% blame me staying awake at 02:40 because I can't stop cackling like a crow being waterboarded on @gatorbites-imagines and his/it's/xyrs kyrtontian's purring at a frequency that humans can't hear headcanon. I'm autistic, and I hear shit on the other side of the building, sometimes on a different floor.

Cw: Swearing, idk else, unhinged/ blunt replies ( R giving).

__Clark Kent__

Clark having his super hearing, I feeling like he hears distracting noises constantly but feels like he can't say anything about them.

So when he hears a frustrated voice say,' Can we please fix that god damn janitor's closet door on the floor under us!? It squeaks all day'.

Clark is shooketh, I don't put it past him thinking you are possibly kryptonian. Like he did with Shazam. Probably try to phish out info to see, but bad at being subtle.

'Why do you keep bringing up Superman??', 'Oh.. Well I mean, he is this City's hero'. You probably read his inquiring wrong, and believe he thinks your SuperMan.

'The reason has to why my hearing is above average, is because my autism makes me more sensitive to sounds. I promise you, I'm not Superman. I could not live comfortably with such a jarring unpredictable schedule.' , you word vomited, pitching the bridge of your nose.

'Oh.. uh I'm sorry if I made you upset', the more exhausted tone reminded him of Bruce a lot, when he bugged him too much. 'Its fine, just so many people make jokes about it. It can get old fast.'

Basically the mf would be balanced between panic and false hope of finding a relative he could keep on earth.

__Kon-el Kent__

I feel like he's got so use to no one being able to hear his purring, he doesn't care to suppress them. At times when he's to lazy to do this hair himself, he gets one of his friends to do it. Not worried.

He just enjoys the comforting feeling and begins to pur away. For the sake of it, let's say Tim was the victim of doing Kon's hair.

Tim would be the first to notice you walking around the common room, looking like you are going insane looking for something. Kon not really caring has he doesn't see it has important.

'Did you lose something?', Tim questioned, pausing shortly from combing Kon's hair. 'There is a sound and I don't know where it's coming from', you kept walking around the room listening.

Tim would try to reassure that you'll get use to the sounds of building, the more you stay. At some point, you walk over to where they were on the couch, and figured out it's coming from kon. 'The sound, it's coming from you!?'.

Kon would be so confused and Tim would be too, for different reasons. Tim doesn't hear it, Kon is not sure if you're referring to him purring or not.

'Huh?', 'You, it's coming from you. It sounds like a rumble or some shit'. Well fuck, he can't really play that off. 'You're not suppose to be able to hear it..', his tone resembling that of Oz media reading a cursed post.

'Hear what, exactly?', Tim feeling more like a third wheel in the conversation and wanting to be in loop. 'Kryptonian's have an organ that can make a sound, the best way I can describe it in human experience is a cat pur. But, we can only hear it.', Kon tries to summarize.

Tim would be the one that's extra, and suggest a DNA analysis. 'Tim I assure you, my mom used the excuse of popping me out of her, far too much for me of too be found in a capsule.', you then explained the autistic symptoms you have. Sensitivity to sounds being one of them.

This dose not stop Kon from jokingly referring to you has his sibling from now on. Which would confuse everyone that wasn't there to hear this interaction. Kon being Kon, he wouldn't explain it anyone, because he feels like that would ruin the joke.

Ha ha ha, it's 04:30 and I get up at 05:00. This is gonna fun.. but at least my dad feeds my caffeine addiction by giving me offerings of energy drinks, in hopes to encourage my autistic brain to be okay with doing the dishes, and other medial tasks.

Okay I have opened March Solicits. Reactions as I go (and I'm feeling salty today):-

Chip I am trusting you to land this ZEA storyline. Also Zur!Tim is when? I am still hotly anticipating the possible fallout from that.

If Harley is back on Suicide Squad is she leaving Birds of Prey? Please?

(Also hot take but I think we're past the need for Harley to be on Suicide Squad. Part of me perked up at Black Alice and Clock King on SS, but eurgh. Harley)

Is there anything more eye-rollingly boring than "Bruce Wayne origin story" at this point?

Batman & Robin continues to look fine

I'm reminded I need to find time to sit down and start Ram V's 'Tec run.

"What's wrong with Nightwing" (I cover my mouth and laugh) anyway this looks very Tom Taylor levels of stakes.

I woke up to the Barbara discourse so I was already spoiled on this, but... sigh. Kelly Thompson not understanding the need for BoP to have someone in the troubleshooter/research role is hmmm a flaw. I am giving the team some leeway still though, as I DO think they're doing good Dinah content.

Outsiders: ...you know I actually have no clue what DC has done with Nocturna since the 2011 reboot apart from the fact she's apparently back. She's Kate's ex? (who isn't at this point??)

I'm again reminded that putting Poison Ivy on my longlist to read is probably a thing to do.

Red Hood: The Hill - "in their civilian lives, seeds of jealousy begin to drive a wedge between Jason and one of his oldest friends". Now don't get me wrong, actually developing Jason having his own cohort is something that is so necessary, but...it's intensely funny to me to see a book pretending Jason has a civilian life and longstanding friends. Go on.

World's Finest: look, I trust this team but you know what I don't need in my life? "the first meeting of Joker and Lex"

...oh damn, PG don't do this to me, that story concept looks halfway okay? Though it would still be funnier to hear about the team of Kara and Karen, ACTUALLY.

The Flash: you know what? I'm still enjoying Si Spurrier on this. Jai and Max sounds like an AMAZING team up actually.

Speed Force as a title is confusing me in that it's not only a mini, it's a mini that's actually keeping abreast of continuity around it for the characters involved. What is this? post-Crisis? (Keep this energy up)

I'm sorry, Wonder Woman is looking worse and worse. That cover makes me HUGELY uncomfortable. (the flag actually even more than the sword)

Sinister Sons remains looking SO BAD

I acknowledge that Amazons Attack is a bad rerun of a bad event, but also Mary Marvel is in it and I love Mary soooooooo (even though I know it makes other people mad)

The Green Arrow situation has been heavily canvassed, but my personal complaint is, in a slow meandering storyline to start with, we are at issue...10? and we finally get 4 women all at once? Why is Mia arriving with this group? Why are they all together? Why are any of them talking to Waller, particularly current Waller, let alone working for her? Why issue 10/12? (sings the 'devaluing women in Green Arrow again? Is it Tuesday?' song)

The old JSAers minis final issues - yeah that looks fine

CREEPER IN SHAZAM??? What??? The Creeper in a wacky hijinks book? This could be very fun but wow is that a tonal dissonance.

Blue Beetle *whispers* I'd actually be cool with Ted retiring from active hero work again. It's a good look on him.

I am, actually, excited for the Barda DCInk book. Though I wonder how much of the Furies backstory is going to get softened for it.

I still can't believe they're reprinting Dixon Nightwing AGAIN, in a 1024 page trade paperback. Why not collect Grayson? Why not finish out the Robin and BOP Dixon collections instead? WHY AS A PAPERBACK BRICK with all the downsides of both TPBs and Omnis and none of the benefits of either format?

I got into shazam from the movie and I'd like to get into his comics but I have no idea where to start, do you have any recommendations?

Hello! There are a few different places to start with the Marvel/Shazam Family, and I’ll list them here in the order of what I think is the most to least likely to appeal to you, with some context about the different versions of Billy Batson so that you can make an informed choice.

The New 52/Rebirth Version

This features the version of Billy Batson whose hero name is Shazam and who lives in the Vasquez household with Mary, Freddy, Darla, Eugene, and Pedro as his foster siblings, collectively known as the Shazam Family. He was first introduced in 2012 and is the current comics continuity version of the character.

You start with this version of the character with:

The Curse of Shazam! — This story was originally printed across back-ups in Justice League (2011), but it was later collected and can be found on its own under the name Shazam! (2013). This is the story that first introduced Billy Batson to the New 52 continuity and is his origin story as Shazam, as well as the story in which he first shared his power with his foster siblings. The 2019 Shazam! movie was a direct adaptation of it.

And you can follow that up with:

Shazam! (2018-2020) #1-15 — This ongoing series is a direct follow-up to the origin story, beginning one year after it, and features the whole Shazam Family. If you remember the teaser at the end of the 2019 Shazam! movie with Mr. Mind visiting Dr. Sivana in his prison cell and talking about taking over the magic lands, that was a reference to the plot of this series.

The General Good Recs

These are the good stand-alone stories that I’d recommend to anyone interested in getting started with comics Billy Batson. These issues cover a few different comics continuities, but all require no prior knowledge to read and understand.

Whiz Comics (1940) #2 — Billy Batson’s first ever appearance, this story covers his original origin story as Captain Marvel. The issue is in the public domain and is legal to read for free online and has been scanned in wonderful quality at the Digital Comic Book Museum.

Shazam! Power of Hope (2000) — Set in what is essentially a modernized version of the world of the original classic character, this graphic novel is themed around the character’s relationship to hope and features Captain Marvel volunteering his time at a children’s ward in a hospital.

The Multiversity: Thunderworld Adventures (2014) #1 — Set on Earth-5, also known as Thunderworld, which is another take on modernizing the classic world, this story features the Marvel Family versus the Sivana Family, who acquired similar powers to the Marvels, while Dr. Sivana has teamed up with other versions of himself from alternate realities in a scheme to take over the whole multiverse.

Convergence: Shazam! (2015) #1-2 — Set on Earth-S, which is the world of the original Captain Marvel who first appeared in the aforementioned Whiz Comics #2, this story starts off with the Marvel Family kids not having been able to transform for a year due to an impenetrable dome that’s covered Fawcett City, but according to a mysterious voice when the dome comes down the city will be forced to fight another city from another universe in order to survive.

The Post-Crisis Version

This features the version of Billy Batson whose hero name is Captain Marvel and who lived on his own and supported himself and then was later adopted by the wealthy Bromfields who had already adopted his twin sister Mary. He works alongside Mary whose hero name is also Captain Marvel. (They shared the name in the 90s, then Mary later went by Mary Marvel in the 2000s.) The two of them sometimes work with their friend Freddy Freeman, who is known as either Captain Marvel Jr. or CM3. Collectively they are known as the Marvel Family.

You start with this version of the character with:

(1994) — This is Billy’s modern origin story as Captain Marvel, and depicts him learning how to use his new powers and fighting his parent’s murderer Theo Adam, who had been protected by corrupt businessman Thaddeus Sivana, while Billy tries to continue to go to school hiding that he’s living on his own.

And you can follow that up with:

The Power of Shazam! (1995-1999) #1-47 — This ongoing series is a direct follow-up to the origin story and takes place 4 years after it, depicting Billy as a now more experienced hero who is better able to support himself than he was in the preceding graphic novel. The series also features both Mary and Freddy’s origin stories early on in the run.

The Pre-Crisis Version

This features the version of Billy Batson who had the ability to transform into the hero Captain Marvel, but Billy and Cap were distinct separate entities. Billy lived on his own and supported himself with his job as a radio broadcaster and Captain Marvel comics were a mix of superhero and boy reporter stories, with both of them being essential to each issue. For the most part, Captain Marvel appeared separately from Mary Marvel, who was Billy’s twin sister, and Captain Marvel Jr., their friend, as they all had their own comics, except for The Marvel Family (1945) #1-89 which featured their family team-ups.

Billy appeared by himself across Whiz Comics (1940) #2-155 and Captain Marvel Adventures (1941) #1-150, but I must recommend caution with these Golden Age comic books as many from this era contain racist caricatures (though the stories linked to here don’t). And I also recognize that many comic book fans aren’t particularly interested in comics from this era, though this is my personal favorite version of the character and I love these comics myself.

So the obligatory issues to start with from the Golden Age are:

Whiz Comics (1940) #2 — As I mentioned in the general good recommendations section, this is Billy Batson’s first ever appearance and origin story as Captain Marvel.

Whiz Comics (1940) #25 — This is Freddy Freeman’s first ever appearance and origin story as Captain Marvel Jr., in which he and his grandfather are attacked by Captain Nazi and Billy must share his power in order to save Freddy’s life.

Captain Marvel Adventures (1941) #18 — This is Mary Batson’s first ever appearance and origin story as Mary Marvel, in which Mary reunites with her long-lost brother Billy and then discovers that she too has the power of Shazam.

Then what I would actually recommend as comics starring this version of the characters that have broader appeal is:

The E. Nelson Bridwell and Don Newton run from the late 70s and early 80s — These comics were published by DC Comics after they had acquired the characters from Fawcett Comics and cover Shazam! (1973) #34-35, World’s Finest Comics (1941) #253-270 and 272-282, and Adventure Comics (1938) #491-492. These issues featured the whole family and were intended to update them with a more modern style of art and storytelling after the characters had been left largely unchanged since the Golden Age.
