For science
Clarifications:
If you don't know the exact number you've read just go with your best guess
Comics here refers to single issues, not collected trade paperbacks. For instance, the Under the Red Hood trade is 14 issues.
WFA is a non canon webcomic, not a traditionally published comic, so it goes in a separate category.
Comics don't have to be Batfam focused, just from DC.
Reblog for a bigger sample size + bonus: put your fave bat comic and/or fave batfam member in the tags.

ok im not making this an addition to that but u know that writing quality has nothing to do with white male characters being so popular when like. one of the most popular batfam members is jason fucking todd. i dont care if you like him or hate him, but I don't think anyone can argue that he's given high quality, consistent writing.

#I also bring a ‘sometimes these traits are written better in male characters and it’s not misogyny to hate the way these are used#with female characters. it’s not misogyny to hate poorly written characters but it is misogyny to hate or like them just for their gender’
my friend u have no clue how many people are just insistent that female characters are always written worse and then they stan like. the least convincingly written, most pathetic bland white guy ever.
but also you know. when writers write male characters better and give them more nuance than female characters. that is also called misogyny. and fandom uncritically accepting misogyny is not a good look, especially when they're willing to go into a lot of in depth analysis for male characters.
I bring a real "many female characters also have these traits you love male characters for" and "many of your fave male characters have done the same things you hate female characters for" vibe to the conversation they female character haters don't enjoy

I saw that panel of that “Batman” tricking Damian …
Okay do Batman writers reread Morrison Batman stuff. Because unless I’m wrong, Bruce was a bit of an ass when Damian came into his life. In fact I remember a panel of Batman saying he was just going to more or less use Damian in his crusade not the fact that his son lost his childhood
Or in Batman inc where Bruce was going to send Damian to Talia despite his pleads
I’m sorry, yes Bruce can love his kids…but Damian alarms should ring like it a level 5 hurricane and try to immobilize the bat imposter.
I can consume the same material as these PROFESSIONAL comic writers right?
i mean I assume sadly that it was just retconned, not "damian doesn't remember what happened when bruce just got there". but yeah he has been shown to spot bruce imposters before so IDK whats even going on in recent comics.
Re the rest of the stuff in the ask:
Some of this stuff I think that we did see Bruce being sympathetic to Damian losing his childhood... but also that he was going to put his training in the fight against crime which NGL i wouldn't say is even a bad thing from DC's worldbuilding perspective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OK ignore the terrible talia writing its hard I know. But like he clearly does know that Damian needs to be taken care of as a child here, and that he was not before, he just also is going to try to let him fight crime (which he will regret soon :P)
this isn't to say that bruce wasn't an ass at times, just that he did demonstrate some basic concern. It does get really messed up in batman incorporated (the comic where he wants to send damian back to an OOCly abusive Talia) but like... that whole comic sucks so I jettison it.

Do you have any DC blog recommendations? I know that's a super general question but I find the bat family and also green arrow intriguing (the blogs don't necessarily have to be dedicated to BOTH of those). But I don't want to accidentally follow people who fanonize everyone since I'm not well versed in their comics yet. So I thought you might have some good recs?
i was sitting on this not sure how to answer... :P I know lots of cool blogs, but also my general thought process is its easiest to tell if the stuff is fanony by reading the comics and developing ur own opinions (also like! People can read the comics and have vastly different opinions. I know there are some people who definitely read comics, and don't base their stuff off fanon, but I still don't agree with their takes. Which is fine, b/c everyone is different. but like. you could follow a non-fanonized blog and still wind up disagreeing with them when u read the comics for example).
there are a lot of people whose blogs are cool but I don't know if they consider themselves primarily fandom blogging or primarily personal blogging :P like @gothham @mollyhats @zukoisblorbo @wesavegotham are like just 4 off the top of my head but I know there are a gazillion more... people who i have forgotten can feel free to leave a comment :P

you have one chance to introduce someone to Damian Wayne what one (1) comic issue do you choose?
I know what mine is but I'm curious about other peoples so 😈
one comic issue is so unfair it means i can't use Robin: Son of Batman... that's too obvious I guess XD
Maybe just b/c I re-read it recently, but I really do like Batman #703 for Damian b/c it showcases his combative personality yet also defensiveness and fear of being judged, relationship with dick and his father, and also his competence (remember Damian was right about getaway genius using the cloaking device dick had them go in the sewers for nothing xD)
HBU? I got to know the one you would pick.

I've seen in multiple fanfics where Damian had to keep his art supplies hidden because Talia thought they were useless and didn't approve him drawing and painting.
Like dude wtf???? Talia is the one who made him have art lessons because she wanted her son to excel at everything including arts, music, strategy, leadership, etc. Like why would she disapprove his art skills that's ridiculous
I think Talia would be very proud of her son drawing beautiful things.

I think fandom doesn't realize that even when male characters get "the female character treatment" (meaning victimized) they often are afforded much more narrative agency than actual female characters.
You see people love to say dick is female coded bc he was raped (which is stupid in and of itself bc men can experience sexual assault too), but as the writers treat it, it's not done to make another character sad. We often see his reaction prioritized in the text, even if it's handled in an unsatisfying manner. Compare that to sue dibney and how the text is entirely focused on how mad/sad it made her husband and the justice league. If we expand this to "female character is assaulted in general for man's pain" you have the text of longbow hunters and follow up hunters moon way more interested in Ollie's reaction to Dinah being tortured than it is interested in her reaction. He gets more agency in processing her trauma than she does.
Then there's the whole "jason was fridged for Bruce's pain" thing which like. Yes, I'm sure the writers were thinking somewhat about angstifying Bruce (but also don't forget that they just didn't like robin). But compare that to babs in tkj or Dinah in longbow hunters. Death in the family spends 2 40 page comics about jasons journey, about how he feels with Bruce benching him and his discovery of his bio mom. He is allowed to make choices that affect the story and makes a heroic sacrifice to try to save his mom despite her betraying him - like you can't compare the amount of panel time and choices he was allowed to make to the lack of panel time and choices babs and Dinah got in their events where they were hurt for man pain.
I guess I'm just saying fandom analyze the narrative around events rather than the fact that they happened. B/c the complaint about fridging shouldn't be "bad things aren't allowed to happen to characters" (tho I am aware it is used that way sometimes) but "stop making bad things happen to female characters while making their pain or death not about them and giving them no agency in their recovery and doing this all to make a man sad"

[image: two fanarts, the first one featuring damian wayne as robin and the second one featuring maya ducard. damian is in his robin: son of batman uniform, with the red tunic and black cloak with a hood and gold trim around the edges. he has one arm across his chest, grabbing the other elbow, and his cloak is falling around his shoulders. next we see maya ducard, first as nobody and then in civilian clothing. as nobody, she has her white and dark purple nobody outfit with the 6 magenta eyes. she has one hand chambered at her ribs and the other off screen. the civilian clothing is black overalls over a purple button up shirt, and a white zip up hoodie that is currently unzipped. she has a purple clip in her wavy hiar.

remember when deathstroke kidnapped damian and put him in a tank slowly filling with water and damian spent the entire time being like “your kids hate you and you’re bad at your job and you’re a fucking boomer” before finishing it off with “come in here and slash my neck then i can be your kid too”. fucking GOT his ass.

also boring goes hand in hand with acting like damian just joined bruce right away and had a relatively conflict free start with his father... that is not what happened...
whenever people want to act like the batfam was generally more unified or supportive of damian when he just got there (like acting like dick was very soft and always saying the right thing, ignoring when he was judgmental towards Damian or assumed the worst of him or said the wrong things, ignoring Tim's general judgmentalness and way of speaking/thinking about damian that can be dehumanizing) that's so boring.............. why would u wanna be boring......
like damian can be hard to like and a lot of the adults in his life act like he's hard to like. like he knows this! he's got a tough exterior and lashes out. you can't remove a lot the "reasons damian lashes out or doesn't feel accepted" without removing a lot of the damian-lashing-out stuff.
