Writing Weapons (7): Unarmed Combat (Hand-to-Hand Fighting)

In a fight situation with no weapons, characters will stick with the kind of fighting they're familiar with: grappling or striking.

Grappling

Martial arts: judo, wrestling aikido, jiu jitsu, sambo, lucha libre, glima

Suitable for: entertaining fight scenes

Aim in lethal fight: chock or strangle

Words to use: grapple, wrestle, twist, pull, pin, roll, throw, toss, squeeze, press, chock, strangle

Holding the opponents down to the floor is called a "pin"

Striking

Martial arts: boxing, kick-boxing, karate, muay thai, capoeira, taekwondo

Mixing Martial Arts

Easier to stick with one group for one character - the hero's friends can complement each other if they have different martial art backgronds!

Investing a Fantasy Martial Art

Spiritual Elements connected to the general magic/religious system of your story world.

Mental Focus that allows the martial artist to amplify the effectiveness of attacks.

Small rituals, like bowing to the guru before and after every fight to obtain some kind of "blessing"

Restricted admission to pretigious martial arts academies

Specialist techniques that require combining physical action with spells, or a symbolic act that activates magic.

Exams: students must prove themselves through a series of tough (life threatening) tests to obtain access to the most important lessens of the practice.

I really don’t understand why people are suddenly giving up on buddie. Especially with everything we got in the last episode.

I mean Eddie’s CATHOLIC GUILT finally being canon?? We used to dream about times like these. And yea, obviously, it wasn’t used the way we thought it would be. But I think it makes sense to introduce it in a comical way now, and then be able to reference it in his coming out journey later on. We all know how the homophobes would react if the first time they mentioned it was when Eddie was having his own realisation.

And don’t even get me started on the coming out scene. The way Eddie was more suprised that Tommy, a man he has known for less than a month, is gay, than the fact that his best friend of five years is suddenly into guys. Because, even though he’s not homophobic, he still has some preconceived notions of what a gay man should be like and a macho ex-military dude who’s into basketball and muay thai isn’t it.

And I know that we joked about how all these comparisons between Eddie and Tommy were being made to show us that Eddie is Buck’s type. But I think it’s also gonna play a big part in Eddie’s journey of self-acceptance.

And thanks to Lou (bless him) we even know that the writers are talking about making Eddie canonically queer.

And just because that arc fell through, that doesn’t mean it won’t still happen in a different way. It definitely makes more sense to have Eddie come to his realisation when he’s forced to confront all the toxic masculinity and catholic guilt he grew up with.

There’s also some people who are worried that either Buck/Tommy or Eddie/Marisol are gonna stay together for a long time, but I don’t think that’s the case for either of them.

Not that Lou couldn’t come back later on, but as of right now it seems like ep 6 is his last. Which honestly makes me kind of sad because, even though buddie will always be endgame for me, he seems kind of fun.

Edy, on the other hand, annoyes the hell out of me and I hope her transphobic/homophobic ass won’t stay for much longer.

"After having defeated Beryl in the Arctic circle and having suffered the loss of the Sailor Senshi, upon regaining her memories-- Tsukino Usagi ultimately on decided in taking her duties as a Sailor Guardian seriously. Drawing inspiration from her dear friend Kino Makoto, Usagi had decided to undertake study in Martial Arts. However, instead of taking Japan's art of Karate, Usagi sought strength elsewhere."

It’s been a day.

I walked two hours to practice, wrestled an hour, sparred in boxing for an hour, and took a icing and Muai thai class. I should note none of this was done willingly, and without a break. I’m tryna test how far this fleshtrap can go, and it held up pretty well at this point.

Then came the two hour walk home. My home is really hot this time of year it’s about ninety degrees.. and it’s fucking NOON. So halfway home I decide fuck it I need a break DESPERATELY and walk into a Luna Grill.

There weren’t many people there and as I went up to order just a small side of fries and a water and I offered the money he looked at me and shook his head and said it was on him. I don’t know why. Maybe it was when I walked in I lingered in the air conditioned doorway for a bit because it felt so cool. Maybe I looked really bad or really flushed or something. That man was really kind to me. And when the nice lady brought me my fries she was really nice to me. She asked how my day was and said that I should stay here awhile before heading out again.

I made it home about twenty minutes ago and all I can think of is how kind those two workers were to me and how I hope their lives are blessed by whatever god may be up there.

Also I discovered that no, my body does not like being dehydrated in ninety degree temperatures, the more you know

A thing I’ve found difficult is the realisation that maybe I need to give Muay Thai a real break. An actual planned break. Because I keep stressing about not going when I can’t help the reason I haven’t been consistent this year. It’d be better if I just mentally said nah so I don’t feel guilt for keep telling myself I will go and then not doing it.

My reunion with my old friends was definitely needed. I think that it’s not just that I feel like I don’t get care from people often enough anymore, it’s that weight of the past and believing I spent all those years at uni around people who secretly hated me haunting my mind since I’ve been back in the city. Seeing old friends who I lived with and still adore and see how much they still adore me reminds me that I didn’t spend those years just convincing myself things were better than they were? If that makes any sense.

Those thoughts are probably why I can’t commit to Muay Thai anymore. I saw a Leo Skepi short and he verbalised exactly what it was I’ve been dealing with. Because why do I feel too tired and too busy to do the things I used to enjoy? Why do the easier things in life feel harder than the normal things? It’s because I was in stressful situations for so long and am still very hyperaroused. All the things I’ve had to do on my own since coming back to England - it’s had an effect on me even if it hasn’t been as extreme as it could be for others.

I can’t really ‘remember’ how I used to be when I first met these guys but talking to them brought out the best of my memories. I used to throw myself into everything and push past anything that looked like negative emotions just because I was at uni and I was gonna do everything while I had the chance. I was gonna drink all the booze, make all the friends, join all the clubs and I had massive FOMO about everything. I would cook elaborate meals and experiment while staying keto. I’d spend my time updating my wardrobe because I never had my own money to do it before. I was finally out of my parents’ house and wasn’t going to let my bereavement block my blessings. My uncle would be proud of me adopting his positivity. It kept me fit, involved and very popular.

But since the assault and the way a lot of people reacted toward me in my second year before COVID, I spiralled backwards, stopped showing up to things and gained a bunch of weight because I’d developed, not quite agoraphobia, but being stalked took its toll on my energy and self-assuredness. I never really got to heal from that and get used to being in the real world again because next thing I knew, I was in Japan.

I still haven’t gotten used to cooking for myself like I used to and have wasted to much money on apps because I feel exhausted. But now I can at least make sense of my exhaustion, I can learn what it actually means to prioritise myself again. And when I learn how to do that, I can go back to Muay Thai again and really enjoy it more.

I still love the guys and will go to social things until I feel better but I need to stop punishing myself for not showing up.

Instead of spending energy on things like that, I should go back to the foundation. I’m fat. Focus on losing the weight. I don’t cook anymore. Get back in the kitchen. My room’s always a mess. Put energy into your space. My skin looks bad? It doesn’t but you get the point. Without a solid base, I will fall apart easily.

Kinda Crazy to be not in the wrong ig (friends can be fun to hang with AND be terrible to you)

Actually shared with my sister what happened and when she said "I have a controversial opinion" I thought she'd say I was overreacting and not that I "should've stopped talking to that girl ages ago" huh maybe it's not a silly reason to be upset after all

like hey remember that time she invited me over to her house and not 2 hours later asked me to leave cause she had to go out with other friends

or when she said she "had" to go somewhere when we set up to call/watch smth together and then let slip in class to our other friend that she went to play volleyball with those same friends from the other time

or when I shared with her I had tried an at home workout and the warm up was very difficult and she shared that to our (male) friend in a jabbing tone (making even him a bit uncomfortable, to the point where he tried to softly defend me)

OR !!! when she insisted I went to a coffee shop with her and her boyfriend and went quiet and got an attitude in the middle of the outing (even when we kept trying to engage her in the conversation)

OR in that same outing when she shared a video of the move we tried at muay thai that week and laughed to her bf about how I barely got it done, even though when we were at the gym I was self conscious about it and she reassured me that it was an advanced move and I was doing very good for a beginner because me getting along with her boyfriend "made her jealous" (girl i don't want you bf) (i don't even know how YOU want him) (im here cause you asked me to and im making an effort to be nice)

OR when even tho we had made plans to go see a movie together on the weekend, she said yes to an invite to go to a bar on the same day and overall time of the movie IN FRONT OF ME

OR !! when we made plans to watch Spider Verse together and she texted me before we could go and said her bf "bought different tickets" without her seeing and so they saw ATSV instead

OR when her boyfriend was very rude to me for no reason in front of our entire class and SHE came to me later to apologize FOR HIM cause "he lashed out cause he's going through a lot"

OR when I was crying (which I don't really do often, specially not in public) one that same day and she felt conflicted in staying with (when I ALWAYS make sure she's okay on the hundreds of times she left class or called me crying) or staying with her bf who was "a little bit upset" (he had to tell her to go talk to me)

or when she does something that bothers or annoys me and I communicate it to her (like we agreed we'd do, so neither of us get that uneasy anxious feeling) and she says stuff like "you dont hate me now right?" or "im sorry im such an awful friend" or "I'll understand if you dont wanna be my friend anymore" making me compartmentalize my own bad feelings to reassure her (even tho she's in the wrong)

OR !! For completely disregarding the plans we made to watch this show (that i was very excited to see your reactions to) together, only to watch almost half of it with ur boyfriend literally the night before AND keep me waiting all day for a reply the next day, only to be very nonchalant about the mean thing you did

OR !! always making me bend over backwards to fit into her "busy schedule" but not making the effort of CREATING time for me in her schedule

I'm gonna be enjoying the end of this lovely Carnaval week (god bless national holidays) with a clean conscience and will be amicable when returning to class on monday (at best)

is so weird to actually get older sister advice cause i have a "old wise character" syndrome where I think I know everything (I failed to do what past me did at 16 without even flinching) (it'll be weird to cut this person out of my life) (but I will not stay where I'm clearly not wanted) (well... maybe wanted but not treated with care and love)

#like I hadn't realized how much I actually share about the Happenings of my friendship with Her #my sister (who's a chronic “not listener” and is v forgetful) said She's an awful friend #yeah maybe !! but how do YOU know that #writing this out was both a bit hurtful and therapeutic #vent #but nothing too serious #holy shit did I get love bombed ????#like do i love my friends ?? yes but I felt weird saying it #yet she always kept saying it to me and would have a reaction if i didn't say it back even tho I literally had to wrestle the words out #maybe this is english as a second language thing but saying ily in portuguese is SO DIFFICULT to me #i barely say to my immediate family #(im pretty sure that's love bombing ??) (she did start saying it in like weeks/months of beibg friends)#idk it's weird (it made me uncomfortable and I clearly had trouble saying it back why keep saying it)
