Castles in the Air
I'm extremely excited to announce that the game I've been working on for the past 4 years is coming to Kickstarter! Castles in the Air (CitA) is a tabletop RPG inspired by the novels of Louisa May Alcott and L.M. Montgomery. Players start as children with boundless dreams who will change over the years based on the relationships they form and choices they make. I think it's a really special game, and I'm looking forward to being able to share it with everyone.
For more information or to sign up to be notified when the Kickstarter launches on May 14th, please check out the game's page on the Storybrewers Roleplaying website. If that name sounds familiar, Storybrewers is the company that created Good Society: A Jane Austen RPG. I feel very honored that they reached out to me about publishing Castles in the Air. While Castles in the Air is a standalone game, its mechanics are inspired by Good Society, and if you like Good Society, I think you'll like CitA too as it allows you to tell similarly compelling stories.
I will be creating some blog posts talking about the literary inspirations for different parts of the game in the weeks leading up to the Kickstarter and during its run. I will be using this as a master post to keep track of all of them, so make sure to check back here or follow my blog if you are interested.

Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty. I’m so sick of people saying that love is all a woman is fit for.
I'm so sick of it.
But I'm-
I'm
so
lonely.

Could Jo Starting School For Boys Be A Feminist Act
youtube
A lot of people wonder why Jo starts a school for boys..even though in Little Women it is mentioned many times how much Jo loves boys. In Little Men, we can see how Jo and Friedrich wish that their boys grow to respect women, so could Jo starting a school for boys actually be a feminist act.

Little Women You Should Not Change For The Other Person
I have been thinking a lot about love and Little Women. Especially romantic love. People were a lot more conservative about marriage in the 19th century than they are today and from what I have read Louisa May Alcott's stories and diaries, she took marriage very seriously. In one article that she wrote around the same time she wrote Little Women, she wrote that marriage should require a "meeting of the minds", similar interests, matching tempers and also that marriage that is only based on "looks and beauty" is not going to last.
When it comes to Jo and Laurie, Laurie keeps saying that he is going to change for Jo. He is going to school, he is going to give up billiards and smoking...but Laurie also says, that once he and Jo marry, Jo can stop writing, once he and Jo marry, He doesn't need to grow up, he and Jo can continue being friends and Jo can continue to mother him, all she has to do is to sacrifice her own wishes and dreams.
So Laurie basically is saying that once Jo marries him, he expects Jo to change.
When Laurie falls in love with Amy, Laurie doesn't even think about Amy needing to change for him, or him needing to be something else than he is.
When Friedrich proposes to Jo he says his hands are empty. The only thing that he can offer to Jo is himself the way he and his love for her and Jo want to take it, and when Friedrich confesses his love, Jo feels unworthy of it "sad creature she was sobbing in the rain" the narrator writes. Jo is amazed that Friedrich loves her with all of her flaws and quirks and he never wants to change her and she doesn't want to change him.
When it comes to relationships, dating and marriages, you can't expect to change the other person. If there are problems the only person you can change is yourself and if the other person changes, they only change if they want to.
When it comes to for example Little Men, when I read the scenes between Jo and Fritz, in the eyes of each other, they have only improved.
