what's your favourite moment from the movie and why?
Shoot, that's such a difficult question; I really love this movie a lot so choosing is hard.
The answer may end up changing at some point, but the beginning of the movie (aka before the starting credits appear,) is my favorite.
I know this is a kind of a cop-out answer, especially because the reason I call this my favorite, is not so much because of what happens in the beginning (even though I still love the scenes for what they are,) but because the beginning of this movie is when I fell in love with it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wasn't going to give a long response but let's face it I can't.
The rest of this response would be part anecdotical, part praising the hell about this movie, and probably, some incomprehensible squealing because I love this movie so much is hard to find the right words.
Let's start with the anecdotical part.
I am not a movie person in the slightest, before last month I wasn't even a big fan of going to the movies; honestly, for most of my life the big screen, the sound, and such weren't enough to make it better that watch it in the comfort of my home.
This movie changed that for me. I had no way to run the numbers but I wouldn't be surprised if I had gone to the theatre this past month more times than I had gotten the past 10 years. I am going to be certain that's going to be the case by the time this movie stops showing up in theatres.
I decided to go and see this movie when it came out because I have Fridays free, and while I really liked ITSV, it wasn't my favorite movie, just one a enjoyed a lot but wasn't able to tick all the boxes for me to get up there.
Why go to see it when it came out? Because I didn't trust the internet wouldn't spoil me and even if the first film wasn't in my top 3, and while I wasn't sure the movie could live up to the bar the first set (Especially since the trailer didn't convince me.) One way or another, I want to see it for myself with as little information as I could so I would judge the movies for merit alone.
Because of the type of movie it was, the regular seating had already run out, so I ended up getting an extra expensive viewing. I remember seating in the theatre with my also overpriced food (Since I didn't go to see movies often may as well,) wondering if this was going to be worth all this money.
Let's than 20 minutes in, the movie proves to me it's worth that and much more.
Tumblr media
This, this was the shot that I saw when I thought "Oh it was worth it."
Is hard to describe how hard this movie hits and let me remind you, this shot is before it hits the 15-minute mark. I had never liked something this much this quickly.
I remember being glued to my seat, absolutely baffled how in so little time this movie was able to make me adore it.
The beautiful art direction, oh I wish I understood art better because I know there is so much more going on that I don't have the vocabulary for it.
I caught on other little details, like for me it was obvious how the fact that Gwen's apartment had warm colors except for her room was a representation of how much she is isolating herself, how she herself is blue by drowning in her isolation, and how she only became warm by hugging her father, the only bond he has left with someone who is active in her life.
Seeing Gwen switch between her civilian self and costume, thinking to myself to what degree she is stuck to her costume that she feels the responsibility of the mantle in her bones even when there is nothing going on.
I have 0 music knowledge really, but Self-love is my favorite song in the entire movie, and part of it is hearing the lyrics resonate with what's going on the screen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's funny how I went from really not caring too much about something that happened to a character, to "The first four times I watched this movie I was crying at this part."
Granted, I know exactly why. Execution, time, and tone play heavily into this, after wall, we went from the moment being said in passing to having the flashback of how it plays it out, and is of course, a lot worse.
It reminds me of Encanto in a way, where Alma talking about the death of her husband doesn't come with a twist, in fact none of what she told us is really new information. However because we are seeing things from her true perspective rather that just being told a sanitized version of it, it hits all the harder.
Which is exactly what happens here.
(I didn't include the scenes of Gwen with Peter because the ATSV makes me teary eyed and I already talked a lot about it in other posts, and the one in ITSV is funny because is deadass Peter B model. That also plays a part.)
And this brings us to another reason why this sequence made me fall in love with this movie: Gwen.
Tumblr media
For this, I need to talk about my opinion of Gwen in ITSV: I liked her, and that's it.
I thought her design was cool, I adored the way she move in combat as if she was dancing. I liked that she was a good fighter and so put together. If this movie would have come out a few years earlier, I know my teenage self would have had a massive crush on her.
Yet that was as much as I could say about her, the movie didn't give us as much time to get to know her, and while the cool, badass persona is fun, I need more than that to like a character.
Then this movie comes, and has me crying for Gwen at the beginning of the movie.
I came from barely having any attachment to this character aside from liking the aesthetics, to wanting to hug and tell her everything was going to be okay. As far as I am concerned she is my daughter.
(Let's ignore the fact I am not even 10 years older than her and in no way, shape or form ready to be a parent.)
Tumblr media
I don't really have an analysis to make this, this is just a good joke that I like.
It does however kind of illustrate my point now, doesn't it?
This part is moving, is emotional, is an artistical marvel and this post doesn't even mention Vulture (a lot of people had talked about that already, including people who know enough about animation that can truly appreciate it; so I will just say my jaw was on the floor by that point.) All while being entertaining as heck.
Movies tend to be too long for me, in fact, I saw the new Indiana Jones recently and I was grasping for my phone around the 50 minute mark. Not to say the movie is bad (not really my taste but that's on me,) but to illustrate that this isn't my type of thing.
The new Indiana movie is only 10 minutes longer than ATSV, yet ATSV is the movie I had watched MULTIPLE TIMES already, and still sit through without being the least bit bored. It doesn't matter the number of times I had said this already because I still can't believe it.
And is at the beginning of this movie that it encapsulates the essence as to why it works so well, this is the part that reminds me why I had gotten to watch this on the big screen the number of times I had, is the reason why this movie has basically become my comfort watch, the thing I see when I am stressed out and I want to immerse myself in something I love.
I said at the beginning is a cop-out answer, and this is why; the beginning has all the part that reminds me why I adore the movie to the degree I had done, and while I love so many scenes, this is the part that comes to mind when I think of favorite.

Rise Through the Night
Prompt 3: Arcade
tags: @prinxietyweek
Basic Summary: Roman and Virgil go to the arcade. That’s it.
TW: none (Again, tell me if I'd need to add anything)
Characters: Virgil, Roman, Patton, and Logan
Platonic or Romantic Prinxiety and implied "romantic" Logicality
“To the arcade!”
“There’s an arcade?” That was one of the first questions asked. Turns out, Roman had an arcade in the Imagination.  Didn’t really fit the theme of his brand. But who was to judge? They were bored and needed new something to do.
They ended up taking Logan and Patton with them as well. They were greeted by plenty of the loud noises inhabiting the place. That being either the games or the screams of others. Good thing Virgil already had his headphones on. They went up to the prize counter to see if there was anything worth aiming towards. A certain plush caught Roman’s eye. A large Totoro plush was up on the top shelf, costing 4k tickets. Now he could’ve just summoned one or asked one of the employees if he could just take it. He did technically own the area. But where’s the fun in that. Roman thought if he could win it with his own skills, Virgil would be so impressed.
Choosing to split off in pairs, Patton went with Virgil, and Roman went off with Logan. Immediately Roman rushed off to find a game, with Logan closely trailing behind.
“I can’t believe I was dragged here by you three.” Logan complained.
“If I asked you by myself you would’ve said no. You came because Patton wanted you to come, don’t blame me.” Roman retorted.
“Perfect.” Roman uttered walking up to the game of his choice.
Multiple rounds and possibly a couple of tantrums later, Roman had only collected about 300 tickets.
-
“Come on Roman, we need to go.” Said Logan, who had been watching Roman for the past hour.
“Logan please! I swear I can get this.”
“Even if you do manage to win this jackpot, I doubt it’ll be enough for the prize your aiming for.”
“And how do you know that it isn’t, I never even told you the prize?” He asked.
“Knowing you, it’s something extra, meaning extra tickets which is why you’ve been so desperate for the past hour. You realized you weren’t going to get everything, yet it didn’t stop you.”
Logan was right, except maybe about the part of him being desperate. Though Roman wanted to keep going, it was getting late and they needed to meet back up with the other two back at the entrance.
“Fine, let’s go meet up with Virgil and Patton.”
The two of them made their way to the entrance. There stood Patton, patiently waiting. Although, Virgil was nowhere to be seen.
“Oh there you two are!” Patton shouted as soon as he caught sight of them.
“Hey Patton! Uh, where’s Virgil?” Roman asked him, worried that they may have lost him in the crowd.
“He’s just over by the counter getting something.” Patton replied. Oh, good for Virgil. Roman wondered what he had won, though he didn’t have to for long as he heard a voice from behind him.
“I’m back and I got it!” Virgil called as he ran up to the group. He seemed to be holding something behind his back.
“What’d you win for yourself Happily Never After?” Roman asked.
“Well actually Theatre Nerd, it’s for you.” Virgil replied.
“First of all, I am not a ‘Theatre Nerd’, but really? What is it?”
Virgil slowly revealed to Roman what was behind his back. Roman’s eyes widen. It was the Totoro plush.
“I saw you eyeing it when we came in, so I thought I’d get it for you.” Virgil admitted sheepishly.
“I- I can’t, possibly accept this.” Roman couldn’t believe that Virgil won him the plush that he wanted to win him.
“I insist you have it.” Virgil told him and placed it in Roman’s hands. Roman hugged it tightly, it was soft.
“It’s perfect, thank you.”

Inbox being weird again, had to repost (sorry, anon!)
What are your thoughts on IWTB? It’s now on hulu and I am like 15 minutes in to a rewatch (I’ve watched FtF a truly offensive number of times but have only seen this once, when it first came out) and am absolutely incensed already. I’m having trouble making sense of their characters, they seem so OOC to me — even with the understanding that they are (possibly both) depressed and life on the run has really jaded and hardened them. Also its so weird to me that Amanda Peet reaches out to touch Mulders cheek bc he cut himself shaving? Just bizarre behavior all around!
Tumblr media
It is a truly bizarre movie. I've not seen it; but I have done extensive research on it, if that makes sense. I think it can be summed up by this one Tumblr post I saw (and lost, someone help me find it!) that noted Mulder requested a helicopter for himself and Scully to, essentially, walk a few street blocks to the next location. Because CC wanted a helicopter in his movie and he was going to get it, somehow, someway.
Below is a tragically long post filled with article links for more enjoyment~.
(**Note**: Will edit this post later, brb.)
TLDR: A movie/tv series worth its salt is well-written, end of story. It doesn't matter how excellent or in-character the themes or motifs or etc. are if the characters are badly written or act out-of-turn. You cannot have a god-tier theme about fighting back the Darkness and seeking for the Truth if at every opportunity the characters themselves reject the message continually in ways that make no sense, especially when they have a history of stellar characterization and well-thought-out opinions and actions. This movie is a prime example of that.
There are numerous blogs here that have already (rightfully) griped about IWTB, so I won't go into plot nonsense or whatnot. But I DO have interviews that show how roughshod the movie making process was before it even hit theatres, so....
I first heard about IWTB's flaws peripherally through this article (that trashes the Revival, highly recommend. Written by a CC fan, too, so it's not a bash-sesh against the Creator.) It spoke endearingly-ish about IWTB, believing it to be more in-character than the Revival (yup.... unfortunately.) Then I started perusing fan opinions... and everyone pretty much agreed it was awful in most parts and shippy in others.
TBH, shippy doesn't mean squat to me. Maybe it's how I'm wired, but I was drawn to The X-Files because the romance is so unspoken with very light kisses. I 100% get Chris Carter's restraint perspective; but I also get the fans' perspective, that it's gone too far to ignore or take back. An example: the movie sets up a "gasp, really??" mystery that Scully is a doctor with a life separate from Mulder, driving over to him to try to get him involved in the FBI manhunt. It's taken back almost immediately when Mulder later springs up beside her in bed, but it's those little touches that start to confuse the message. And then throw in Scully insisting Mulder join the chase while Gillian Anderson acted her completely opposite to what she was saying and you start to see the mess unravel. Then Mulder tosses aside his loyalty to Scully-- something that is KEY to his character, having formerly left his life's work for her and even left his newborn son when she told him to-- to chase the very monsters she begged him to chase but is now begging him not to. There is no reason given other than "It's who I am", which is NOT who Mulder is: he is a man willing to sacrifice who he is and what makes him tick over and over for Scully's sake. This not only breaks his character in-movie, it nullifies all his actions and choices in the original series, stripping them of their consequences and weight.
The movie, I believe, was supposed to be about Mulder and Scully scrabbling against the Darkness while also lost in confusion: they're together but Scully feels threatened by Agent Whitney, Mulder no's the case before getting wrapped up into it, Scully supports then withdraws her support (and LEAVES??), both rely on the word of a pedophile priest (a similar alliance to Luthor Lee Boggs but creepier and less redeemable... and even Boggs wasn't redeemed), and finally Scully casts aside her doubts to get back in the saddle and save Mulder. It seems a compelling story, no? ...No.
An example of the "confusion" theme of the plot: When Mulder meets up with the other agents to discuss terms (I suppose), the camera briefly pans to random people walking past him in the hallway-- one of them is the actress who played his little sister in the OG series; and the camera makes it a point for Mulder to notice that fact... but so briefly and quickly it never made an impression on him permanently, a.k.a. a seeming callback. BUT when Scully yells at him (before? after? I dunno) about always looking for his sister, this is the scene that was supposed to back her up? In which case: dude, we all saw the Samantha Agent. She did, indeed, look like Samantha; and she had NOTHING to do with this case. The only explanation Scully had for her tasteless remark was that she thought Mulder was full-on delusional or so stubborn he was projecting his own demons onto this case. Y'know... the case he didn't want and only got more involved in to SAVE LIVES. In which case, it doesn't fit with the themes of the movie at all: Mulder was right here, Scully was wrong; but the movie stated that SCULLY was right, or at least half-right, and Mulder was at least half-wrong. It's all nonsense.
The dialogue is atrocious. Absolutely appalling. Which makes sense to an extent: CC and Spotnitz had this movie written out right after the series ended as an attempt to gain back the studio's attention. No such luck; and when FOX was finally interested to make more money, the script notes were accidentally lost; so CC and Frank blitzkrieged up a final draft in just a few weeks (very not good.) This and this article breaks down how Spotnitz (in his own words) watched CC battle FOX from the sidelines for the movie, then scramble with him to complete a draft in time for filming; and it explains (but doesn't justify) the stilted dialogue, horrendous pacing issues, and disjointed theme. To summarize:
""Frank Spotnitz: ...The pressure in television is incredible because you’ve got to keep coming up with another script, another script, another script. The movie was completely different. We started work on the story in 2003, and then got derailed for four years by deal-making and the threat of a lawsuit. Then when we returned to it in 2007, we’d lost our notes.
Lost your notes?
Frank Spotnitz: We’d put them on note cards to pitch the studio, and we couldn’t locate them. At first, we were very unhappy, but it ended up being a blessing in disguise. We remembered what the case was about, but the emotional beats, the personal beats between Mulder and Scully, we had to start from scratch, and we had changed.""
Frank Spotnitz claims it was effortless to get back in their characters' heads; and, while that may be true, it was certainly not effortless to put them down on paper.
The messaging of the movie was so confusing that Mark Snow, the composer, didn't read all of it correctly (which is important for the person composing the score for each scene):
""Now the plot of I Want To Believe has characteristically remained a secret – I don’t suppose you can tell us anything about what we can expect from this film?
Well the interesting part was, when I read the script the first thing I got out of it was deep, dark complexity and I spoke to Chris Carter afterwards and he said ‘what do you think?’, I said ‘man, it’s so complex and dark and mysterious’, and he said ‘and it’s a love story with religious overtones…’ Okay! He said ‘just keep that in mind’ and you know I re-read it and I got what he meant, and then seeing the movie I certainly got what he meant. Besides the Mulder and Scully relationship there are some other very very emotional, intimate if you would, moments there that do add spiritual and religious weight to it....""
This article does well at picking apart the claims (some ludicrous) for and against the movie But, for time's sake, let's skip to the summary of the very sloppy (and downright goofy) climax of the movie:
""The biggest shortcoming may be that the case is solved by both Mulder and Scully independently and simultaneously, and thanks to coincidences on both their behalf. Mulder’s investigative skills lead him to the villain thanks to a simple visit to a local store; stem cell research for organ transplants and for curing Christian allow the two storylines to cross, but Scully having a revelation by finding the villain’s research on the internet through a non-related search draws the odds extremely. There is little actual investigation and the case is wrapped up too quickly. All those are little things — but they pile up to too much.""
Both the actors had "notes" and "questions" (read here) about their characters when they first got the script, with Gillian Anderson admitting how hard it was to find her character (post here)--
""Gillian Anderson: I had a similar experience. This feels so weird. Summertime. I didn’t have all the running around that David had to do, but I did have my own unfortunate beginning which was starting with one of the most difficult scenes for Scully in the film where it’s later on in the script and she goes through a range of emotions in confronting Billy Connolly’s  character. I just had a really time for those first couple of days that that scene was. I had a really hard time just finding her, finding her voice. I think I must’ve gone through ten other characters in the process of trying to get to her when I had assumed that I would be able to show up on the first day and it would just be there. It wasn’t until I think day three when we got to work together, not just necessarily in a familiar environment which it really wasn’t, but in the environment of each other and the relationship and that it kind of felt natural and familiar and I felt like I’d landed this time."" --
but it was David Duchovny who was surprisingly the most honest to the press about his (measured) thoughts, as he's usually the most reticent. He always wanted to do a movie series, liking the scope and freedom it would give him with acting and scheduling; but he mentioned, once or twice, that he wished IWTB had been a bigger action film in the vein of FTF. Further, he admits to an interviewer about his thoughts and his (slight) dissatisfaction with Mulder's out-of-character element here:
""Since The X-Files: I Want to Believe may not have been the huge blockbuster that everyone was hoping for, we’d like to know: What is your own measure of success for the movie?
Duchovny: I guess it’s always the first time I see the movie. What’s my feeling when I come out? I always felt like the subject matter of this particular movie was limiting. It was dark, and it wasn’t going....
I’ve only seen it one time, and I was sitting in Chris’ editing room. I watched it on a little screen. I guess I missed the chance to see it on the big screen, and that’s too bad, but when I left that initial screening at Chris’ house, the film was pretty much almost done except for some special effects. I just felt like it was really strong and kind of a strangely moving piece of work. Still dark, and still, I thought, limited, but the way that the movie performed did not surprise me so much, and I think that if we do get a chance to do another one … what I always really liked about the show was that it had a dark vision, but at the heart of it being driven by Mulder was this real optimism or wonder or sense of belief, and then it would kind of open out. Most of the best shows that we did would open out into real wonder at the end, if only because you didn’t have an answer, which was the mystery of it, but the wonder.
Mulder’s quest, to me, is a very positive one. If we get a chance to do another one, I think because in this movie Mulder kept getting reinvigorated, Mulder was in a down place for much of this film; he wasn’t driving the way he drives, the way he drove everything before that. In a way, the nature of how we had to get back into the show, which was to take the guy out of his job, also deprived the movie of some optimism and wonder and enlightenment that occurs when you’ve got this unhinged guy trying to prove wonderful crazy things.""
And while DD defended IWTB's box office failings as having to compete against Batman, one of the previous articles I linked had the savvy to tackle that reason and debunk it:
""The defenders of IWTB will endlessly complain about the budget (but look at what a feast Darren Aronofsky did with $35 million: “The Fountain” (2006)), the fact that it’s low-key ‘intellectual’ and not blockbuster-like (so is “There Will Be Blood” (2007), $25 million, and countless other generally agreed upon masterpieces), the lousy promotion (but look at what good word of mouth can do with a movie few believed in in the beginning: “The Matrix” (1999), $65 million), the unforseen success of “The Dark Knight” as competition (hardly an argument) or trends in selfish cinema critics (as if a bad reception is the sole result of a conspiracy).
However what will remain in history is not the whys and hows but the what: the final product itself. And the truth is that if IWTB featured characters other than Mulder and Scully, this would be a not very memorable movie.""
Needless to say: the entire movie's a mess, and it's down to the roots. While beautiful visually and musically-- all the reviews and cast and crew had nothing to say against that-- the characters and the script and the plot were a horrible mishmash that highlighted its weaknesses and smashed down its strengths.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to ramble; and sorry if this didn't do what you needed! But you did inspire me to find all the old angry IWTB discussions/posts on Tumblr (archive hopping, heheheh) and put them all in one place. So, look forward to that sometime in the future, I suppose~!
Disclaimers: I do not like canon after S8; and that's only because they get a happy ending and, even though it has garbage canon decisions, the characters were able to save most of it and forget the rest. But I will treat IWTB as its own thing devoid of my personal opinion.

Kaylo's Special Birthday: Chapter 26
(Meanwhile back at the Bruno mansion)
Kaylo had been getting really suspicious. First, none of her friends picked up the phone when she tried calling them. Thea's and Stefan's excuses were becoming more questionable than before and had been constantly hanging out with the maestro brothers.
The final straw was when her younger sister Kimi had decided that she wanted to head out…while carrying her package.
Kaylo frowned. She needed to get to the bottom of this. Before she could do anything, her phone rang. Curious, she picked it up and answered it. "Hello?" Kaylo asked.
"Hey, deary!" Stefan's voice said.
"Dad, what are you and Mom doing?" Kaylo asked. "I also saw Kimi leave the house."
"We asked her to come here," Stefan explained. "We needed her for something real quick. Listen, I need you to get your shoes on. When I'm done, I'll come pick you up. Bye." He then hung up, leaving Kaylo confused and curious.
(The next day)
After some time past, Kaylo now found herself walking with her dad to the Balan Theatre. Except that this time, she had a blindfold on her eyes. "Dad, seriously?" Kaylo asked. "What's going on?"
"I told you, deary," Stefan said. "You'll see. We're almost there. Just don't take the blindfold off yet." He carefully led her to the inside of the Balan Theatre. When he got to the door that led to the dining room, he nodded at Balan and Lance.
The two maestros opened the doors and allowed Kaylo and Stefan to head on inside. "Okay, Kaylo," Stefan said. "You may take off the blindfold now."
Kaylo took it off to see that the dining room was rather dark. Suddenly, Balan switched on the lights.
"Surprise!!"
Kaylo gasped at the pink and purple scenery. Aria, Debbie, Trisha Jane, Rebecca, Mei, Marina, Lora, Jett, Jon, Phil, Lila, Clem, Bianca, her family, and the twelve Inhabitants were all in the dining room.
"You all planned this for me!?" Kaylo asked, an excited smile on her face.
"We sure did!" Thea said. "Happy Birthday, Kaylo!"
"We did have to work really hard to keep this well-hidden," Attilio said. "But in the end, it was really worth it!"
"It sure was, darlings!" Lucy said. "Let's celebrate by singing "Happy Birthday" to the Birthday Girl!"
Stefan sat Kaylo down at the head of the table. Soon Lance came from the kitchen, revealing to Kaylo her birthday cake.
Kaylo gasped. Her cake was purple with pink and white music notes made out of fondant. "Lance, this cake is really beautiful!" Kaylo cried.
"I helped Lance make it," Aria said with a smile. "And it was the exact cake you wanted."
Thea lit the candles on the birthday cake. Stefan turned off the lights as everyone began to sing:
"Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday, dear Kaylo!
Happy Birthday to you!"
Kaylo happily blew out the candles as Stefan turned the lights back on. Everyone then applauded for Kaylo.
"Before we eat, why don't Stefan and I both give Kaylo our Birthday present to her?" Thea said as she handed Kaylo a small box.
Curious, Kaylo took the small box and opened it up. She then gasped.
Inside were lots of plane tickets! They were all for Tokyo, Japan!
"We're going to Japan!?" Kaylo exclaimed.
"We sure are," Caitlin said. "We will leave on Friday and will be spending a week there!"
"But first, let's us eat," Sana said. "Then, we can watch Kaylo open the rest of her presents!" Everyone cheered loudly at the thought.
Kaylo smiled. It was the best birthday she ever had.
The End.

Some say Sophie's hair is dark blonde. I honestly don't like the idea of Lily James fancast because most people chose her cuz she plays Cinderella. Then again, the idea of inter-racial cast for Sophie just doesn't fit me. Please understand that I'm not being racist, I just feel like Benedict's story with Luke Thompson portraying him needs something more like what we see on "Pride and Prejudice" or "Emma" (different tropes, obviously).
So the question is, who's your fancast for Sophie Beckett?
YES someone who gets it about how boring the Lily James fancast is!! I’m so tired of people fan casting her as Sophie just because she’s seems to have been the best Cinderella in the last decade (and that’s a seriously low bar) but it’s time to let it go.
Although sorry about dissing Pride and Prejudice for a sec, because I’m seriously bored of P&P too. I mean Keira’s Pride and Prejudice came out in 2005. But for some reason, until Bridgerton came along, that seemed to be the only period drama worth talking about in Tumblr and it’s gotten old. Personally I love Lizzie, but there’s only so many repeats of that movie I can play for 18 years before I start watching Sense and Sensibility. Or the Jennifer Elhe version of P&P.
As a rule, it is fun for me to fancast Jessie Mei Li as Sophie because I’ve yet to see an Asian Cinderella outside of k-drama, and as someone who advocates for fully racially diverse casting in productions like Bridgerton. I want the Asians to have a larger representation…. And also because I like to bet against the odds, and deep down I know that given Shondaland track record of having so few Asians characters in her shows, the likelihood of Sophie being Asian is unlikely. So if it happens, It’ll bring me the highest emotional reward.
That being said, Sophie’s full name is supposed to be Sophia Maria Beckett. We never find out who her mother was, but given her name and what little we know of her mother, who was supposed to be in the theatre business, I assume her mother was a born Spanish or Italian speaker, so Sophie’s mom canonically was either Spanish, Italian, or South American. Since Sophia and Maria were common names for women in those regions at the time.
So if I’m fancasting book Sophie, I would fancast her as a blond haired South American actress. A friend of mine suggested Ana de Armas and now I can’t stop thinking about it. In fact I think I’m going to change my fancast in Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss to Ana, because I would love to see her play Sophie, I saw her in Knives Out and Ghosted, and I think she’s got the mixture of cute and badass that would make her a perfect hardworking Sunshine Cinderella who punches Araminta. There’s a reason it’s not totally believable when she plays role of femme fatales, and it’s because she’s definitely got the type of cute innocent face that just doesn't lend itself well to sexy seductive action roles, even tough she's an excellent actress. In my opinion.
I think that Ana de Armas could in fact pull off the whole 'he didn't recognize her without a mask' scene and make it believable.

But in the end, if we were betting money, and if we were playing with the rules of probability, instead of against them. The most likely thing that’s going to happen, is that Sophie’s actress has already been casted and that she is black, or mixed raced black. And I’m saying this because it was foreshadowed in QC (or so my sources tell me) and also because Shonda is extremely predictable. In the sense that it seems to be what the majority of the viewers seem to want (when it's not Lily James)
So yeah that's the tea. Jessie Mei Li or Ana De Armas for Sophie.

We saw Kinky Boots last week, and friends, never in my life have I cried that hard during a musical.
Spoilers for Kinky Boots, Derry Girls, Stranger Things, and, uh, Pokémon Violet?
We bought the tickets like three months ago, and then three days before the show I suddenly thought “Hm, isn’t there a part where Lola sings to her dying estranged father?“
I looked it up, and there is in fact that part! Not only that, Charlie’s dad dies in like the first five minutes and one of the themes of the musical is Charlie filling his dad’s shoes (lol) and trying to make him proud/do what he wants with his life/be like him/not be like him.
“Gee,” I thought. “Better warn my brother. That might bring up some stuff.” But the tickets were expensive, particularly for a regional theatre, so off we went anyway.
So we got through most of the musical, and I was enjoying it (great show!), and I was a little on edge due to all the Dad™️ stuff but it was okay, and I knew we were coming to the Hard Part…and then LAUREN came out and started talking about how she felt when her dad died, and all I could think was “Jesus Christ, is everyone’s dad in this show dead??” That’s about when I started crying.
Right after that seen is Lola’s song to her estranged dad. If you don’t know it, it’s called “Hold Me In Your Heart” and it’s essentially about loving a difficult parent despite their flaws and needing them to love you too. I’d look it up. It’s worth a listen.
So Lola sang her song, and I actually full-out cried through it (I tried to be quiet, but I’m sure the people behind me noticed and goodness knows what they thought was wrong with me). Then a light came up on her dad sitting in a wheelchair, pretty zoned out. Lola walked over to him, says “It was good to see you, Daddy,” and put her hand on his shoulder. He didn’t say anything, didn’t really react, but then his hand came up to cover hers.
Lola visibly choked up, said “I love you,” and then left.
My brother and I didn’t, like, perform a drag show for our dying estranged dad. But, uh, the non-responsiveness? The hand coming up? THAT WAS KINDA LIKE WATCHING OUR GOODBYE WITH OUR DAD ONSTAGE.
So I was pretty much gone, and couldn’t really enjoy the finale.
My brother was…okay. He handled it better than I did, and he squeezed my hand throughout the entire scene. We react to different things.
The show was fantastic, by the way. Excellent cast. Lauren was amazing. I wish I had a recording of her song. It just so happened to be deeply personally triggering for me!
I feel like media is full of dead dads lately. I watched Season 3 of Derry Girls? SURPRISE, A DAD DIES! I played Pokémon Violet, a children’s game? SURPRISE, THE ESTRANGED DAD IS ACTUALLY DEAD! I got caught up on Seasons 3 and 4 of Stranger Things? SURPRISE HOPPER IS DEAD* AND OH LOOK ELEVEN FOUND A LETTER HE WROTE FOR HER BEFORE HE DIED! I went to see Kinky Boots! SURPRISE, EVERYONE’S DAD IS DEAD OR DYING!
Or maybe it’s just the frequency illusion. I think about dead dads (well, really one specific dead dad) a lot, I notice dead dads more.
There’s not really a point to this wall of text. Kinky Boots is a great show. Grief is weird. I should maybe avoid musicals with estranged-dead-dad-goodbye scenes.
Which is too bad, as I’d really like to see Fun Home.
*yes I know he's not dead that's not the point

I'm tired but I'm also currently obsessed with Nigel Bottom and I said I would write this (more specifically I said this to @squips-ship)
A Little Help
Tumblr media
Hattie and Nigel had been courting for a while now and she had even persuaded him to start living with her. As a couple they tended to share their personal interests with each other, she would talk to great lengths about her love of greenery and, as to be expected, he would rattle on about his great interest in poetry and writing as a medium in general. While Hattie did not care much for literature she still found Nigel's proficiency to be fascinating and beyond impressive and his ranting and raving to be truly charming.
Of course even with his talents that doesn't mean he never ran into writers block, quite the opposite actually. While it wasn't common Nigel did sometimes find himself stuck, looking for what exactly to write. Luckily however, if he were to ever run into a brick wall it seemed that Hattie would always be a brimming well of ideas.
And yet, today was one of those days where, Nigel’s pen in one hand and his head in the other, he was completely bereft of ideas. Hattie came into his study carrying a bowl of porridge and a mug of tea, yet when she saw the dishevelled state he was in she quickly placed them down before sitting next to him. “Nigey what’s wrong?” She asked concerned while taking his hand into hers. “Oh nothing, I just can’t think of any ideas... like usual.” Hattie let go of his hand and placed her chin in her own, she pondered for a while before having a slight eureka moment.
“How about a play that’s just really sweet and romantic?” She smiled at him and while he liked the idea he still held reservations. “But, love, those kinda plays aren’t that common... I don’t know if we’ll really be able to sell it.”
“But that’s why! All other plays are sad or, quite frankly, gross. And a play in which people can just watch it, have a few laughs, and feel like their shillings were still well spent would be an innovation!” Hattie insisted and while Nigel still didn’t entirely believe her it was definitely worth a shot. Plus her reasoning was rather sound and who was he to doubt her instinct?
Yet he would need research for this project, and a lot of it. Luckily enough he already had a subject to work off of. And so, he spent the next couple of days following Hattie around with his quill in one hand and paper in the other, she sometimes got suspicous of what exactly he was doing but didn’t feel concerned enough to ask. And finally, his research was complete. And not only did he get to write a new play, he also had a new found appreciation for his betrothed and all the things she did to make him happy and healthy while he used to just stay in his study writing.
Finally the big day had come where Nigel got his brother to act out the play with the rest of the troupe and had invited Hattie to attend the showing with him. As she watched on her eyes became wider and she became more gobsmacked, half because as always the play was purely brilliant but also half because it was just so sweet how Nigel took so much inspiration from her.
After the play had ended and they walked out of the theatre Hattie quickly wrapped her lips against Nigel’s in a sweet kiss that tasted vaguely of wine. As always he was a flustered mess but tried not to show it, “So I take it you like the play?” She grinned and quickly nodded her head, “Absolutely! It’s possibly one of your best yet. And at least now I know why you followed me around last week.”
Nigel grinned sheepishly and rubbed the back of his neck with one hand as his other was too busy holding Hattie’s, “You noticed?” She rolled her eyes in a playful demeanour, “It would’ve been hard not too.” He snorted and smiled even wider if that was possible, always finding her comebacks to be rather hilarious if not a little silly. “Fair enough, love, fair enough.”

We nearly forgot we were going to the theatre last Friday evening - only remembered when I happened to glance at my calendar. The play was called POTUS at the Arena Stage, a comedy about a group of women supporting a US President. It was a) absolutely hilarious; b) well acted; c)well staged (in the round); and d) absolutely filthy in the language department - the first word uttered was a four-letter word beginning with "c"! All-in-all well worth going and to a theatre we haven't been to before.
Unintentionally, the place we went to for food beforehand was a Hank's, which was a branch of the restaurant we went to before the last play we saw. And although it was also a bit damp on Friday, not enough for us to need an umbrella.
Some of the weekend was again spent watching rugby, with the disappointment for some that England were pipped by a point by South Africa (15-16) so didn't make the World Cup Final tomorrow. But somehow Gloucester managed to win up in Newcastle, in truly horrendous, torrential conditions and Harlequins beat Exeter, so there was something for everyone in the family to be happy about.
We did manage to go for a bicycle ride on Sunday - twas a beautiful crisp sunny day, but my wife was struggling with a knee problem so we didn't go as far or as fast as we might have intended.
The Boy failed to get his driving licence changed to Virginia on Monday - although he had gone there equipped with multiple proofs of address, the one thing they really wanted was a signed copy of his lease and he had only taken the front sheet. Hey ho - at least he discovered that the dealer had ordered his Virginia licence plates, so that was one less thing to worry about, apart from where they will be delivered and how he will get them fitted. But he came over on Sunday and his car looks great, just perfect for what he needs. Though he did come back again on Monday evening because "something fell off when I opened the back door". Turned out to be the trim on the rear wheel arch was not fully attached under the door. It will be a simple fix, but I didn't want to do it in case I broke the plastic pin that should be holding it on.

Im trying to make a list of books, movies and tv shows right now for you
Do you have any horror movie recommendations? My brother is coming over on halloween and weve worn everything out i think lol
🤔…
Hm. I’m not the most knowledgeable when it comes to horror movies, BUT I will recommend the ones that truly fucked me up:
Evil Dead Rise (my friend dragged me to this one against my will lololol)
Get Out (perfection, okay? truly)
Nope (saw this twice in theatre and both times I found myself saying: nope nope nope to what was happening on screen)
Hell of a Summer (it isn’t out yet, it will be by the time Halloween rolls around. I saw this early and the kills in it were truly creative!)
The Birds (came out in 1963 and is still truly terrifying. just watched it again for the first time in years a few days ago and it holds up)
Fear Street Trilogy (on Netflix if you have it. loved every moment of this. again, the kills were creative but more than that the story took so many twists and turns, it’s well worth a watch!)
Midsommer (saw this when it came out and I’m still traumatized)

Next to Normal // Macbeth Donmar Warehouse // Shakespeare's Globe
September has been a great month for theatre! I saw Next to Normal at the Donmar (twice!), Macbeth at the Globe and Moulin Rouge at the Piccadilly Theatre.
Honestly, nothing compares to Shakespeare at the Globe - I've never seen a production elsewhere that lives up to it. This is the first time I've ever seen Macbeth, and it wasn't one of the ones I studied at school, so pretty much all my knowledge of Macbeth came from reading If We Were Villains! I knew the basic plot, of course, but that was about it.
The Globe does modernisations really well, and there were so many great little details, like the witches' cauldron being a blender. As always, the production was incredible, and the acting was amazing. I try not to read plays until I've seen them performed, but now I've seen such a good production, I'm looking forward to reading Macbeth.
My least favourite of the shows I saw this month was Moulin Rouge. I liked the film, and they offer special experience packages at the theatre, so we thought it would be a fun evening. The show was really fun, and the package included a semi-private lounge with a cheeseboard and a bottle of champagne, which was so worth doing - it made the night really special. But the show was super touristy, both in content and atmosphere, so I probably wouldn't go again.
But the absolute best show of the month was Next to Normal. I've been hoping this show would one day get a West End production for so long - and it's taken fifteen years, but it finally happened! And the Donmar is my favourite theatre, I'll pretty much see anything there, I've never seen a bad show at the Donmar! So I bought tickets literally the moment they went on sale, and I'm glad I did, because they sold out very quickly.
I was thrilled when the cast was announced. Dan was played by Jamie Parker, and I've been a fan of his for so long, I book tickets for literally anything he's in, he's such a good actor. And Jack Wolfe was Gabe! I absolutely lost it when he was announced, I would die for him in a heartbeat. I'd only seen him in Shadow and Bone, so I was a bit worried - Gabe is a really intense role to sing - I wasn't sure if he'd do it justice. But oh my god, he's got the most incredible voice!
I hadn't seen the two female leads before, Caissie Levy (Diana) and Eleanor Worthington-Cox (Natalie), so I didn't have any expectations either way, but they were both fantastic, they had much better voices than the actors on the Broadway recording, and they gave such convincing performances. I did cry both times seeing it, and I really wish I could see it another dozen times. I would kill for a soundtrack recording and/or an NTL recording!!
I bought the script when I was there last, and I'm definitely going to read it before the end of the year!

The chatter of the well-dressed crown was merely background noise to your own thoughts. The sparkly dresses and expensive accessories were a part of a culture that you would have normally stayed far away from… but being here and inserting yourself into said culture was one of the first steps to this mission you had found yourself on.
Every single person received a scrutinizing gaze from your eye, but none of them were worth your time at the moment. This mission hadn’t “started” yet; or rather, it hadn’t become challenging yet. It was easy enough sneaking into the theatre and blending in with the other theatre-goers; the real challenge had only just walked in.
You let your eyes glide smoothly over the man you were here to see, raising the flute of champagne to your lips and turning your face in the opposite direction. If he saw your face before you could get the information you needed, the entire mission would go south immediately. The gazes of those around you simply passed over you, a trick you had learned early on in life.
The next destination was already in mind, and it had you strolling leisurely in its direction. The first step was completed: locating the target. The next step would admittedly be a little more difficult, but not impossible.
On the short walk through the theatre’s double doors, you quickly placed the now empty flute of champagne on a nearby table while keeping the target’s moving figure in your peripheral.
The theatre’s winding walkway was dim enough for you to simply press yourself against the wall. As long as you were out of the way of the audience members, you were practically invisible.
Not long after you took your spot in the shadows did the rest of the audience members start flooding in, their excited voices speaking on topics ranging from fundraisers to politics to the opera that they were there to see. While it was mildly entertaining to listen to the oh-so-interesting lives of the rich and privileged, there was only one person in the entire theatre you actually cared about, and it wasn’t in the traditional sense of “care”. More like he would help further you on this personal mission of yours, whether he wanted to or not, and that was why you “cared” about him.
The man walked through the double doors, following the crowd only to veer off in another direction, no doubt on his way to the boxes above the stage reserved for the “special guests”.
You took one step in the direction he went in only to pause. With furrowed eyebrows, you watched as a man roughly 2 times your size stepped through the double doors after the man, eyes scanning the surroundings along with the people who occupied the area. Everything was fine; you had planned for this. But just because you had planned for this did not mean that it made your job easier.
Mere moments later, the lights in the theatre were dimming even more as a voice welcomed the audience. Next came the sounds of the orchestra tuning their instruments as the audience quieted down, and then came the opening notes of the opera.
You were grateful for the carpeted floors of the theatre as you cautiously, but quickly, stepped out of the spot that had been hiding your figure. Without a second thought, not even to rethink your plan B, you quickly walked towards the tall, built man. Under the guise of being solely invested in what was happening on stage, you attempted to step around him, right in the direction the target had walked.
To your expected dismay, your steps were halted when you bumped into a strong chest.
Turning your head resulted in you coming face to face with a man with a stern expression on his face. His eyes focused on your face as you took a step back, plastering a sheepish smile on your face and letting a hushed, breathy laugh escape your lips.
“I’m so sorry, it’s so dark in here-”
“Where’s your ticket?”
His hushed voice cut yours off, leaving no room for any excuse you had prepared to use. His upfront, cold tone made your eyebrows furrow in just the slightest. Maybe...just maybe, this would be harder than you thought.
“O-okay. It’s right here…”
Your hands brought your small clutch to the front of your body before opening it and rifling around in the mostly empty purse. It was simply an act that would play further into this ruse.
Your eyebrows furrowed in concern as you quickened your searching before looking back at the man apologetically.
“I’m so sorry, I seem to have misplaced it. I guess that’s why they encourage e-tickets, huh?” Your sorry attempt at a joke went about as well as you had expected it to in the tough company.
The guard raised an eyebrow at you before looming over you, his eyes boring right into yours.
“No ticket, no entry.”
Despite the hushed whisper of his voice, the roughness of it was apparent. That paired with the cold and unyielding look in his eye made you go to your next plan of action; one that you had really wanted to avoid.
“Fine. Then I’ll just go around and come in the other way.”
Your enunciated your words with a raised eyebrow before turning on your heel and walking out of the double doors that led back to the lobby. You had no intention of leaving until you had received what you had come for in the first place, but the guard didn’t know that...which is what you were counting on.
You heard the door close behind you, and in the second between the door closing and opening again, you managed to step behind the door, obscuring your body from anyone who walked out.
Doing exactly what you had expected him to do, the guard quickly walked out of the doors, his eyes searching quickly around the lobby for your figure. You stayed in your spot behind the door as it slowly closed, and the second it did, your muscles tensed as you sprang into action.
The guard had just turned upon hearing your shoes against the marble floor when you were rushing at him. Acting purely on instinct, your knee raised quickly, connecting with his abdomen. A wheezed breath flew out of his lips as he doubled over, and you took the chance to lock your hands around the back of his neck before throwing your weight backward, taking him with you as you fell to the floor. Instead of his weight landing on you, with a quick shift of your weight and a kick, the guard was sailing through the air above your body before landing with a thud not too far away from you.
It only took a few seconds for you to roll onto your knees and a few seconds more for you to watch and come to the conclusion that the guard was no longer a threat. It was evident in the way his groans echoed through the lobby as he took shaky, painful breaths,
A quick glance around the lobby showed that it was empty before you stood up, reaching down to grab ahold of his ankles. Your labored breaths joined his painful ones as you managed to drag his body behind one of the supporting pillars in the furthest corner near you. You leaned against the same pillar for a second after propping his body up against his, bracing your hands on your knees as you took deep breaths.
“Damn, am I out of shape.”
Your statement echoed lightly through the lobby as you took the time to gather yourself, and at the same time, your eyes followed the wall before you and landed on the blinking red light of a camera. You simply looked at it for a second before straightening yourself and starting the short walk back to the double doors you had just come out of.
The cameras weren’t exactly on your list of things to be concerned about; most likely because you had taken care of them before the elite had started to arrive. It included the simple task of taking one of the theatre’s already published security tapes and putting it on a loop. It was a relatively simple task; almost a little too simple for such a prestigious, well-known theatre. Maybe you’d send a letter advising them to invest in a better surveillance system… later, though. Right now, you still had a few tasks to complete.
The loud, carrying voices of the opera singers paired with the symphony seemed to spill through the doors as soon as you opened them.
The contrast between the bright lights of the lobby and the dimmed lights in the theatre made you pause just inside of the doors to let your eyes adjust, and then you were once again moving in the shadows.
This time, as you gradually made your way to the box hanging over the edge of the stage, there were no obstacles to stop you. It gave you time to think about what you would say to the man that had such a huge impact on your life; an impact that only benefited him and those he worked for and with.
As you grew closer, you could now easily see his distracted face turned towards the stage, giving you the element of surprise as you walked into his box. The curtain closed soundlessly behind you, and then you were facing the man who held a vital piece of information.
“Oh, so you finally decided to join me, Jonathan? I told you, you work too hard sometimes.”
His voice was quiet as he spoke without turning around, undoubtedly under the impression that it was his bodyguard who had just walked in. The sincerity in his voice as he supposedly invited his bodyguard to join him made your teeth clench. It made your blood boil, watching the man who had stripped away the last remaining pieces of yourself those years ago act as if he cared for someone other than himself.
“Jonathan had other matters to attend to. He sent me in his place.”
The man turned quickly upon hearing your voice, his eyes squinting in the low light of the box to make out your features. From where you stood, you could see the confusion on his face.
“Who are you? You’re not permitted to be in here.” He leaned slightly in his seat, his eyes searching the darkness behind you for any sign of his bodyguard. His eyebrows furrowed upon seeing none, and then he met your eyes once again.
It didn’t matter how older he looked; it didn’t matter how many years had changed his face, pulling taut in some areas while being loose in others. The look in his eyes as you stared into them was the same endless, emotionless void you could remember seeing standing over you all those years ago. Eyes that were masked enough to reassure you, but sharp enough to wound you when you trusted them. You had learned that the hard way, and you were still dealing with the fallout.
nil/
Voice low but steady, not a hint of hesitance in it, you asked your own question.
“What? You don’t recognize me? I feel like I should be a little offended, considering how much of your time you spent...experimenting on me.”
His eyes narrowed at your question as he slowly stood, grasping at the back of his chair to ground himself in the dim light. He followed you with his eyes as you continued walking around the chair, approaching his tensed figure.
It only took a quick passing of the stage’s lights over your face for his expression to shift. It was apparent, the way he tried to mask his features into an expression of indifference. But you couldn’t deny the pang of satisfaction that went through your body upon seeing the smallest hint of fear in his eyes. It even made the smallest of smiles lift the corner of your mouth.
“Oh...it’s you. Why are you here? What do you want?”
His questions stopped you in your tracks. His voice was slightly shaky but was it from the shock of your appearance, or was it because he already knew the answers to his own questions? You supposed it was a mixture of both.
“If I told you what I was here for, I’d have to kill you. So just do us both a favor, and just give me what I came for.”
As the word “kill” exited your mouth, a piece of his mask chipped away, revealing just how afraid he was. It made the smile on your face grow.
In a poor effort to put distance between you two, he fumbled with his chair, throwing it to the carpeted floor between you two.
As much as you were enjoying watching his scrambling, as sadistic as it may seem, your mind was quick to go back to the bodyguard you had left unconscious outside of the theatre hall. Everything had been going mostly according to plan and, quite frankly, you didn’t feel like dealing with any other obstacle after getting this close to the target.
“You-you can’t kill me. You won’t.”
He had barely gotten his final word out when you were lunging in his direction, hands outstretched. A strangled yell swallowed by the orchestra’s music flew out of his mouth as his back hit the railing of the box, his feet leaving the floor only seconds after.
His arms flew about, looking for anything to grab and anchor himself...only to be grabbed by your own hand.
In a single motion, you had pulled him over the railing only to let him go as soon as his feet were on the ground once more. You watched as he crumpled, quite pathetically, to the ground before turning away. At the sound of his heavy, shaky breathing, your eyes rolled.
“Is that it? You come here to terrorize me and then you leave? What do you want from me?”
His raised voice prompted you to pause in your spot at the curtain of the box. For a few seconds, the only sounds were his heavy breathing accompanied by the opera’s main character’s words of vengeance, spouted in song on the stage. It’s rather ironic, you thought to yourself.
You simply raised your hand, the ring in it glistening in the stage’s light as it passed by. You turned it around, making sure that he saw exactly who’s ring it was and what it meant; making sure he noticed the empty spot on his finger where it usually sat, and making sure he knew that this was only the beginning of what you had planned for him and his fellow scientists.
His quick intake of breath at realizing what it was didn’t go unnoticed, but you didn’t acknowledge it. Instead, you reached to pull the curtain back, getting ready to finally leave the man behind. Instead, you stopped as his desperate words reached your ears.
“You won’t get what you want. You may have the ring...but you’ll never track us down. We’re everywhere. We are everywhere, and you will regret-”
At some point during his villainous monologue, he had stood up, his eyes focused solely on the back of your head with as much malice as he could muster. His words were cut off after a swift kick to the chair that still lay between the two of you collided with his body, quickly sending him over the edge of the theatre’s box.
The sounds of people’s startled gasps coupled with the sound of the doctor yelling as he fell followed you as you stepped past the curtain of the box, deftly closing it behind you once more.
The emergency exit located not even 15 feet away was the only thing in your sights as you quickly slid the ring into your clutch before pushing the door open.
Your steps echoed in the empty stairwell, and the silence gave you time to think about what had just happened and what had yet to happen in your self-motivated mission.
Despite knowing that this mission would be far from easy, especially by yourself, you couldn’t find an ounce of regret in your entire being. Even knowing that there was a possibility that you wouldn’t survive; after all, the organization your mission was centered around was, in every term of the saying, “off of the grid”. If they didn’t want you to know about them and their work, you wouldn’t know. And if you did happen to know about them, it was next to nothing for them to just...eliminate you. You had seen it before.
What would they do to you, a person who was putting everything into making sure their deeds came to light? You could guess, but you wouldn’t be shocked if they still managed to surprise you with their harsh ways of handling things.
However, they wouldn’t get the chance- you wouldn’t let them.
As soon as you passed through the door that led outside, you could hear the entrance to the stairwell opening, followed by the sounds of multiple pairs of feet rushing down. Their panicked voices confirmed your suspicions that they were just audience members, so your quick stride stayed the same, effortlessly blending in with the crowd that had now made its way to the front of the theatre.
The only people rushing into the building were dressed in police uniforms, accompanied by the theatre’s own guards who were yelling what had happened into their ears.
You figured that it was time to leave when one of the officers walked out of the building, his arm supporting the guard you had...encountered earlier. Your desire to leave the area only increased at the sound of countless camera’s clicking accompanied by the yelling of the reporters stationed outside of the theatre.
Their attentions being focused solely on the crowd exiting the building, and the ambulance that was now hastily pulling up, allowed you to sneak behind them unnoticed,
It was only when you were a block away did you finally slow your steps in the slightest, your hand reaching into the clutch you carried and taking out the one thing this entire night had been focused on.
The thick, yet simply decorated, ring reflected the city’s lights off of it’s surface as you held it up. It was simple in the way that it was designed. A simple band with an emerald gemstone sitting in the middle of it, surrounded by writing. Writing in a language you had never laid eyes on before.
Getting the ring was easy enough, the next part was figuring out how to use it in order to gain the next piece of information you needed. It would be significantly harder; you doubted you had access to the kind of technology needed to translate the text.
One of the downsides of being alone on this mission was not having outside help. You had managed to make it this far with only minimal amounts of contact with those who didn’t exactly know your situation, but with this new piece of information, the next person you went to for help would be sure to ask a few prying questions.
As your “borrowed” car came into view, tucked away into a dark alley, you had to ask yourself a question. A question who’s answer would determine how the rest of this mission would go.
Wouldn’t you rather endure questions from someone you know- someone you trust- than from a complete stranger?
You already knew the answer to the question, though to be honest, it had just added another obstacle to your plans. There was really only one person you trusted enough to tell everything, or at least what they needed to know in order to help you. The obstacle itself was finding her, and the first step to doing that was in China, a place you hadn’t stepped foot in for years.
A heavy, already exhausted sigh left your mouth as you situated yourself inside of the car.
“Well...China it is.”

Once again, I hope you all liked this prologue! I do not plan on having an update schedule for this because I feel as if it would stress me out, which would in turn make it harder for me to write the way I would like to! So updates will sometimes be quick, sometimes they won’t be as quick as you’d like them to be, but all I ask if that you be patient with me! <3
This series will be tracked by the tag “redemption” on my page! :)

Career Day
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
Most of the students around you were chorusing to the tune of your school anthem, but not you. You had heard the melody and sung it almost a million times. Whether you were exaggerating or not, not even you knew. Instead, you were whispering and laughing with one of your best friends, Daniel Sharman.
You met Daniel when you first came to the school. You didn't know many people. You didn't even know yourself in this place. It was a completely foreign experience, but he stuck by your side and showed you around.
Since then, you had made friends, joined the swim team, learned your way around the school without ending up in the boys' restrooms instead of the girls' ones. Despite not needing Daniel to show you around anymore, he still provided plenty of comedic support and pick-me-ups and was a great mate all around.
Your teacher had just finished introducing all the parents who were presenting at career day. The assignment being after the presentations were finished, you were supposed to think about what you wanted to be in the future. You had no idea what you wanted to be. But of course… Daniel did.
"An actor."
"An actor?" he nodded. "Like Macbeth?"
"No, Macbeth is a character. An actor is a person who plays the character."
"Why an actor?"
"Dunno. Just seems right."
You frowned. "Huh, that's nice. Knowing what you want to be."
"You could always try acting. It's worth a shot."
"Hah, if I ever tried acting, it would probably be when I'm old, senile, and look like Betty White."
"Oh, come on. You're a great actress!"
"What's that supposed to mean, Sharman?" you gasped.
"Just that you tell fibs and stories as if they were the truth. That's all acting is."
"I DO NOT!"
"How did you convince your mum that your dog jumped onto the table and ate the cake without making any noise last weekend, then?" You opened your mouth to speak before closing it.
"Cat got your tongue?" he teased.
"Shut up, Sharman."

L/N Residence
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
You and Daniel were both swimming in the pool in your backyard when Daniel asked you the question.
"Did you think about it?"
Still floating, you asked, "About what?"
"Acting."
You laughed incredulously. "You were serious?"
"Of course I was." He swam closer to you and pulled your leg down, making you flop around and splash water.
"WHAT THE HELL!"
"Was just trying to get your attention," he remarked innocently.
You coughed. "You had it."
"Picture this," he waved you off. "Us, on the red carpet-"
"Who's red carpet?"
"Does it matter? We'll be each other's dates anyways."
"Why is that?" you asked.
"Because we're best friends."
"What if one of us has a boyfriend or girlfriend?"
He shrugged. "Ok, whatever. We're on the red carpet separately. It's both of ours red carpet-"
"So, does that mean we're in a movie together?"
"Yes, Y/N," he muttered exasperatedly.
"But that's impossible?"
"Why do you say that?"
You leaned closer to his ear. "BECAUSE I'M NOT BECOMING AN ACTOR."
He jumped away from you, proceeding to splash you with water.
"Mark my words. I know talent when I see it."
You sighed. "Could this just be you not wanting to be lonely in the acting world?"
He jutted his lip and spoke in a whiny voice. "Maybe…"
You laughed before splashing a giant wave of water at him. While he still had water in his eyes, you dove under and pulled him down.
He flailed around before his head popped up, and he calmed down.
"WHAT THE HELL!"
"PAYBACK, SHARMAN!"

Announcement
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
The intercom gave a heavy buzz, and static-y noises ran amok over the building before a voice actually came through the speakers.
"Hello, Teachers, Students, and Faculty. Welcome back to school. We hope that you all enjoyed your holidays and got the rest you needed to pay attention in class today," the last part was passive. Your principal gave more announcements for clubs and sports around the school, such as upcoming games or reminders for students to buy the school yearbook.
You were nodding along interested, or looking for interest really when something caught your best friend's attention.
"The school will also be hosting its first-ever play, Romeo and Juliet. Interested people should report to the music room before the end of the week to receive information."
You saw Daniel's eyes widen only moments before he spoke up. "Hey," he waved at you. "You should audition!"
"Daniel, are you insane?"
He chuckled, "No, but I think you'd like it."
You tried arguing, but he wasn't taking no for an answer. "You're the one who said you didn't know what you wanted to do after you graduated. Doing this cannot hurt."
"Yeah, it can't hurt until I trip on my costumes and break my neck!"
"That rarely ever happens," he said exasperatedly. "Ok, how about this? You audition, and if you end up getting a role and actually doing the play, I'll give you fifty pounds."
You squinted. "Do you even have fifty pounds to give me?"
"Do you even have to ask," he feigned shock in the accusation? You gave a sour face before he truthfully answered. "Fine, I don't have it now. But I will by the time the play comes around."
"What do I get just for auditioning?"
"I'll convince my mum to make that cake you like."
"Fine."
"BUT!" he exclaimed. "You have to audition for Juliet."
"You're kidding?"
He laughed. "No, I'm not. You have to audition for Juliet."
"I hate you," you mumbled before sighing a whispered 'fine.'
He gave a toothy smile. "Then we have a deal."
☆◦ 。\|/。◦☆
Auditions
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
You reluctantly walked onto the stage, Daniel's widening grin so visible in the audience. He said that he only put his name on the audition sheet so he could watch the auditions. He would've already been gone by the time it was his turn.
"Hello, My name is Y/n L/n, and I am auditioning for Juliet," your lips pressing into a straight line after saying the sentence.
You stammered through your first few lines. "Sh-Shall I speak ill of him— that is my husband?" You said with a laugh.
"Ah," you paused and clicked your tongue. "Poor my lord, what tongue shall smooth thy name… When I, thy three-hours wife, have mangled it?"
You said your following line in an accusatory manner. "But wherefore, villain... didst thou kill my cousin?" you said, though your voice squealed trying to pronounce 'didst.' "That villain cousin would have killed my husband."
"Back, foolish tears, back to your native spring!" Your voice rose and fell several octaves. "Your tributary drops belong to woe, Which you, mistaking, offer up to joy." Fake tears spring to your eyes, your voice cracked, and you began slowly falling against an invisible wall.
You looked down at your paper for what to say next. "My husband lives, that Tybalt would have slain; And Tybalt's dead, that would have slain my husband. All this is comfort; wherefore weep I then?" You wiped your cheeks dramatically.
"Some word there was, worser than Tybalt's death, That murd'red me. I would forget it fain;" your lips quivered, and you sucked in deep, heaving breaths before speaking your line.
"But O, it presses to my memory. Like damnèd guilty deeds to sinners' minds! 'Tybalt is dead, and Romeo--banishèd!" You shouted.
You stood back up in a startling jump, and with a proud smile, you said triumphantly, "And Scene!"
The directors and some students in the audience, especially Daniel, gave a round of applause before the director dismissed you.
You took the steps to the stage and sat next to Daniel as the director called the next student to audition.
"You were amazing! The director might as well have given you the role right then and there."
You laughed, "Hang on, charmer. There were a bunch of Juliet's who literally said that entire thing so… fluently. I stammered through the whole thing."
"But you showed more emotion than anyone else. You only had a week to prepare. The actual show will be like child's play."
"They want people who can memorize and recite. The emotion can be added later, but it's worth nothing if they forget their lines."
"There is such a thing called improvising for a reason," he reassured.
"Who in their right, bloody minds wants to improvise Shakespeare?"
He turned his head and chuckled before waving a five-pound note in front of your face. "Here, I got to go before they call me, but you earned this at least."
"Five pounds for being forced to audition for a stupid play so you can prove a point? Wow, you must really fancy me, huh, Sharman?" you said sarcastically.
"Goodbye, L/n," he whispered before sneaking out the back door of the auditorium.
"Alright, next up. Daniel Sharman!" The director shouted your friend's name a few more times before giving up.
☆◦ 。\|/。◦☆
Headmasters Office
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
A week after your audition, you were called to the headmasters' office. Thus is the cause of the curious looks from your classmates. Oohs and Aahs flooded your ears as you grabbed your bag and headed out the door to the front of the school.
When you got to the front of the building and went into the headmasters' office, you saw the Theatre director, Ms Parker, standing behind the desk. "Headmaster Leo allowed me to use his office to do this. Isn't that cool?"
Ms Parker was one of the younger teachers in school. She was twenty-four, and this was her first year teaching after receiving her bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in music production. A fact she could astoundingly ramble about for fifteen minutes. As proven at the auditions.
"I didn't want to call you to the theatre room. That would be too predictable, correct?" You'd come to realize she was a very eccentric woman. "I have called you in here to inform you that you have been selected to perform in this year's play of Romeo and Juliet."
A wave of shock coursed through your body, and you were sure it reflected on your face. "Are you sure?"
"Darling, I'm positive!- your audition was totally spectacular! So brilliant-in fact- that I am completely sure in my choice to make you our female lead- Juliet!"
"What!" Your eyes widened into a blank stare. Your thoughts were running rampant in your mind. You thought that performing on the stage would be a breeze when you weren't the lead.
"Ms Parker, I didn't actually want the part of Juliet! It's just that my friend dared me to audition for Juliet! Is there no way I can get a smaller part? I'm no Juliet. The show would be ruined," you rambled.
The directors' facial expressions softened, "Darling, you are the only choice. None of the other people who auditioned can even compare to the amount of passion you produced in that audition. I am determined to have you as our Juliet."
You whimpered out an "Ok." Professors had a strange way of convincing you to do extra credit assignments or things that aren't necessary.
"We have a chemistry read for you and a few of our other choices for Romeo after school today. Do you need to contact a parent to let them know where you'll be?"
"Uh, yes, please."
After you made your call, you walked back to your classroom with shaky hands. The class period was almost over, but you had to tell Daniel that you had gotten a part in the show. Not just any part- THE PART!
You shuffled into the classroom reluctantly. All eyes were on you as every student had assumed you'd been in trouble. Either suspended, expelled, or told your parents were going to have a sit-down with the headmaster.
You took your seat next to Daniel before taking out a piece of paper and writing out a note, encompassing the words, "I got the part!"
You slid the sheet discreetly onto his desk. When he read it, his eyes widened, and he quietly moved his hands toward yours, beckoning for a high five.
☆◦ 。\|/。◦☆
First Rehearsal
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
After the chemistry read, the role of Romeo was given to a kid named James Mercer-Allen got the part. Though it was more because the directors were starting to become tired.
The next day was the first rehearsal. Swimming season was last semester, so there was no clash in schedules with the play.
"Alright, this rehearsal is to get acquainted with the stage, your fellow actors, and directors," she insisted. "Now, let's introduce ourselves. Can our Romeo please stand up?"
James stood up and gave a brief introduction. You were called on next. You stated your name, "I was on the swim team last semester, and I'm in my thirteenth year. I hope I can do this role justice."
More students stood up to introduce themselves. The entire process took more than thirty minutes.
The next thing to happen was that the rest of the students were called to recite lines for various roles. The only parts that had been cast preliminarily were Romeo and Juliet.
You and James had sat on the wooden stools unless there was a scene going on that needed Romeo and/or Juliet.
By the end of the first rehearsal, the majority of the speaking roles were cast. You went home exhausted but not expecting the conversation that waited for you.

The Talk
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
"We're moving?" you shouted at your parents from your seat across from them in the sitting room. "What do you mean we're moving."
"Honey, your dad got a job in the states, so we have to move," your mother argued.
"But what about school? No school will take me in the middle of the year, and it's my last year of secondary school. I don't want to spend the rest of my last year knowing nobody."
Your dad, the man of the hour, spoke up. "Dear, we're moving at the end of the year. After school ends."
"But- What about Uni?"
"You said you were taking a sabbatical year!"
"Yes, so I could intern in London!"
"Can't you intern in California?" Your mother whined.
"We're going to California? It's the furthest state?"
Your dad attempted to reassure you but failed. "Darling, it won't be that bad. Maybe you'll like it there more than you like it here!"
"I could never like anywhere more than I like it here!"
You agreed to go to your room and spent the rest of the day there. Later on, after you finished moping, you ringed up your closest friends to tell them you were moving. You did that until you were so tired you fell asleep on the phone with Sarah before you even called Daniel.
☆◦ 。\|/。◦☆
Confrontation
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
"Why am I hearing from everyone besides you that you're moving?" Daniel appeared out of thin air behind you, and the accusation was an assault on your conscience.
You could lie and tell him that you wanted to reveal that to him in person, or you could just tell him the truth- say you fell asleep. Mix-and-Match? You ended up just telling the truth. "I fell asleep when I was making some of my other calls. I was going to tell you, I swear!"
"Why didn't you call me first. I'm your best friend?"
"That's why! It was too hard. I kept putting it off and putting it off and putting it off because I didn't want to tell you, I don't want it to be true, and telling you of all people would make it feel real."
"Why can't you stay for Uni?"
"I already told my parents I was taking a gap year. I didn't apply to any colleges."
"Crap!" he sighed. "Ok, well, we're going to have to make the most of it. And! You're getting a going away party!"
"Daniel, I don't need-"
"No debate! You are getting a going away party!"

Opening Night
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
Four months later, after all the rehearsals and memorizations of lines. After much running around the entire film department, it was finally opening night, and your nerves were shot.
You were scrambling all morning to find everything you needed. All your costumes were at the school, but you still needed to bring your black leotard, skin-coloured tights, and wear your hair in an up-do style.
You decided to do your skincare routine, but your panic got the best of you, and you forgot what every single product was used for.
Daniel came over and helped you get ready but found you practically hyperventilating.
Your parents drove you both to the theatre, and when Ms Parker told you that Daniel couldn't be backstage, you promptly told her that he was your emotional support. After much arguing, she finally let him backstage.
Around an hour before showtime, the director told Daniel that he had to go wait in the audience if he already bought his ticket or that he had to go do it now.
Before he left, he gave you a pep-talk. "Hey, so one time, I was in this play, and the idea was that I was expelled, and there was a piece of paper I had to give my 'mother,' but I lost it. So we had to improvise, but I couldn't find the paper, and I felt horrible. So just know, even if you forget your lines, you must improvise, and remember, it still probably won't compare to the embarrassment I felt that day. So you can laugh at my humiliation. "
You chuckled, "I will. Ok, go before you get in trouble."
"Ok, me, our parents and all your friends will be in the front row. I've already reserved the entire row. I brought a whole bag of jackets just for that reason!"
"You can't do that," you said in between cackles.
"For you, I'll do anything," he grinned.
A few hours later and the show was almost done. "What's here? A cup, closed in my true love's hand? Poison, I see, hath been his timeless end," you wept.
"O, churl! Drunk all and left no friendly drop to help me after? I will kiss thy lips; Haply some poison yet doth hang on them, to die with thine restorative." You leaned over James and let your hair fall to the side of your head to cover your face. You pulled back without actually kissing James.
"Thy lips are warm."
A whispery voice came from offstage, "Which way?" The cue for you to take the poison, which was actually cranberry juice.
"Yea, noise? Then I'll be brief. O happy dagger!" You grabbed the dagger and brought it near your chest. "This is thy sheath;" you drew the fake knife back three inches from your chest and stabbed it to where the bag of more cranberry juice was and punctured the bag. 'Blood' soaked through your dress. "There rust, and let me die." You fell dramatically onto the altar and waited for the scene to end as the crowd cheered.
After the show, you dashed into the crowd where your friends and family waited for you. Ovations and Applauses were passed, lauded boxes of chocolates and gorgeous roses were given.
When you got to Daniel, he practically tackled you with a hug. "I actually thought you died for a split second. The blood looked so real."
"Daniel, most people don't bleed that fast, do they?"
"I don't know but fear kicked in, and I couldn't make sense of anything."
You grinned and almost went to your parents before Daniel grabbed your arm. "You don't have a date to the Leavers ball, do you?"
"No, I don't. Why?"
He sighed. "Well, I was thinking that you could go with me. I don't have a date either."
You squinted, thinking there was some ulterior motive behind his actions. "Ok, I'll go with you if you give me the money you owe me before then."
"It's right here," he smiled.
Your face scrunched up, but you reluctantly agreed. You only had a month of school left, and you might as well spend it having fun with your friends.
☆◦ 。\|/。◦☆
The Leavers Ball and the Getaway Party
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
You were dressed in a light blue, pleated, Mikado prom dress that cut off at mid-thigh. You had black wedges on your feet and a black pearl-beaded bracelet on your arm.
You were wearing a half-up, half-down style that framed your face and a silver necklace with a circle-shaped diamond.
You were sitting in the parlour when Daniel rang the doorbell. He was ten minutes late.
"Sorry," he said when your dad answered it. "I know I'm late. I was picking up Kat and James."
Kat and James were your and Daniel's respective friends who'd started last year after you and Daniel introduced them.
"Hi," you popped out of the shadows. "Alright, Mom, Dad, we're late, so we're just going to get goi-"
"Wait! I have to take pictures! Go get Kat and James."
"No, Mom. No pictures!"
"It's only right. I just want a few. We can take it outside."
You sighed but reluctantly caved into your mother's will.
The four of you took pictures outside of Daniel's Jeep Wrangler. You took ones with silly faces, just girls, just boys, and ones with all four of you before your parents allowed you to leave.
You were forty minutes late, and the ball was already in full swing by the time you got there.
You got on the dance floor immediately because one of your favourite songs was playing, but the DJ switched the song as soon as you found a decent spot. It was a slow song. You chuckled, and Daniel put his hands on your waist.
"Well, this is awkward."
A few minutes later, Daniel posed an interesting question.
"Did you know that I had a crush on you when you first came to school?"
"Uh, you stammered. "No, I didn't know that."
"Yeah, I did. It was short, though. Surface-level."
"Oh," you said. "Should I take offence to that?"
"What?" His eyes widened in realization with what he said. "No, that's not what I meant. You have an amazing personality. I just meant that… I just meant I like you more as a friend than to ruin that with any of those feelings."
"Oh, ok. You wouldn't have, though."
"I wouldn't?"
"No, everyone needs an ego boost every once in a while."
"Haha!"
"And besides, I've had feelings for you at one point too. But it was very cliche, so I tried to shake it as hard as I could."
"Oh?" He raised his eyebrows. "And did you?"
"Like I said, as hard as I could. If it's still there somewhere, it's buried very deep, so much so that I was embarrassed."
"Embarrassed to like me?"
"I mean embarrassed to try and make my life seem like some movie."
"Oh, well, if you did, it would've just made you that much better as an actress. Speaking of that, would you consider acting in the least?"
"Maybe, now that I'm leaving, it's basically the last thing I have to connect me to you."
"No," he said, pointing to your bracelet. "You have that."
You had forgotten that it was Daniel who gave it to you, but the realization brought a smile to your face. "Oh yeah, I'll never take it off."
Later on, long before the ball ended, you saw many of your friends leaving.
"Hey, are you ready to go?" Daniel approached you.
"Where is everyone going?"
He wriggled his eyebrows. "Afterparty!"
"But it's not over?"
"Quit being a party popper and just come with us, L/N!"
You gave in, something you did a lot, and you all started driving. When you got there, you realized you were at Daniel's house.
"The afterparty is at your house?" you asked.
"Well…" James answered.
Kat joined in. "It's really an afterparty!"
"This is your going away party!" Daniel finished.
"But I'm not going away for another month."
"Well, now you have an entire month for people to give you gifts and stuff, and you don't have to worry about the party!" He reasoned.
"But why did it have to be after the Leavers ball?"
"Because you're already in a dress, and it has to be a surprise! Surprise!" Kat exclaimed.
"Alright, fine!"
The entire night you partied and danced, and though you didn't drink alcohol, plentiful amounts of pop and mocktails were passed around. The music was a delight to your ears with all your favourite songs. There were chips and pizza with all your favourite toppings.
"This party is awesome!"
Daniel grinned. "Well, I am an amazing party planner if I do say so myself."
☆◦ 。\|/。◦☆
Airport
☆◦ 。/|\。◦☆
Daniel's parents drove your family to the airport. Your parents had sold the car. Your dad would return in a week to close a deal on the house. Everything was official, and now you were leaving.
You got out of the car, and the tears forcefully began to fall.
"I'm really gonna miss you, jerk," you said disdainfully to Daniel.
He chuckled. "I'm going to miss you more."
"Impossible!"
He wiped the fallen tear from your eye, and for a moment, you could see every single multi-coloured speck in his eyes and noticed how sometimes they looked blue, and at others, they looked grey or green.
You noticed the curvature of his smile and the chisel of his jawline. You saw the hurt in his eyes that said, 'why do you have to go? You're killing me,' and wanted to never move from that position.
He continued to rub the tears that fell onto your cheek, and the sad moment was as sheltered as it could be. You felt safe with him, in his arms, just looking at his face and being reminded of how he comforted you in a place that felt as familiar as Oz felt to Dorothy.
"What am I gonna do without you?" you whispered.
"Get at least one acting job, get an assistant and an agent, I'll do the same thing, and then either one of us has our assistants reach out to our agents, so we get back in touch in case we ever lose touch."
He sounded so grave that you couldn't help but laugh. "That's assuming I do become an actress, Daniel."
"You're right," he whined. "But don't forget me."
"I promise."
And you tried to keep that promise. Throughout your first year, you interned at UCLA, working in the lab. You then applied to go to school there, and you still tried to keep Daniel in your mind. Maintaining a social life on campus combined with schoolwork already wasn't easy. However, you still wouldn't let yourself forget your best friend.
It wasn't until you entered your senior year and you were about to graduate that he started to wane in your memories. The things you did together became obsolete as new friends and memories replaced the old. The things he taught you were thrown out to make space for the new lessons you learned each day.
Even when you did become an actress, you never really remembered why you decided to. You remembered that your friend pushed you to do that play, but it was almost ten years ago, and for the life of you, you couldn't remember his name.
But you did do it, first as an extra, then a body double, and then you started getting l roles on smaller shows. But your big break was getting a quasi-lead role on the spin-off of a big television show, The Walking Dead. For two years, you enjoyed going to conventions and playing the complex character, Valeria Bishop, and you thought you had it all figured out.
But life has a funny way of coming full circle and throwing you a curveball that knows you off course and changes your life.

“Harry, did you get the drinks?” You asked as you walked down the stairs.
“Go’em ready in the living room, love” Your boyfriend's answer came from the kitchen, his shoes clicking against the wooden floor as he made his way to where you were fixing your hair at the end of the stairs.
The moment he saw you, all dressed up and giddy, he let out a loud whistle. You felt your cheeks turn a tinted red as you felt his eyes checking you out up and down.
“Well look at you, pet,” He said with a grin as he walked towards you, rounding his arm on your waist and pulling you closer to him “You look stunning”
He placed a soft kiss on your cheek, making you giggle as his stubble tickled your skin.
“I wanted to look good tonight,” You said with a shy smile “Even if no one is going to see me”
Harry hummed close to your ear “Lucky me, then. Don’t have to worry about anyone stealing you away from me”
You scoffed “As if that were possible” With one last kiss on his cheek, you started to walk away. But not before Harry stole one small squeeze to your butt, making you gasp and shoot him a knowing glance as you turned into the kitchen, still able to hear him laugh.
You stepped into the kitchen and made sure the finger food you ordered was ready and placed in the tray. You wanted to make tonight extra special for him despite everything that was going on.
After pushing it back a few dates, the Grammys were finally happening tonight. Given the circumstances though, they were being held in an empty theatre while all the nominees stayed home and watched the ceremony.
Upon hearing the news, Harry was understandably a bit bummed out, but then he thought better of it “At least I’ll get to spend the evening with you” He said with a grin.
It was true. If it weren’t for the norms applied for the ceremony, you weren’t going to be able to celebrate with him. At least, not at that moment. That’s the downside of having a secret relationship.
You were used to it, though. Years of sneaking around and secret rendezvous made you an expert on the topic of privacy. It was something you both agreed on earlier on in the relationship, not wanting to attract the wrong kind of attention towards the two of you.
And yes, although that meant to have to deal with all the rumors of your boyfriend dating other celebrities and see him up and about in different galas where you had to maintain your distance until you were sure there were no peeking cameras, you wouldn’t change this for the world.
You loved Harry Styles as much as the next person did. But you much rather have Harry, just Harry all to yourself. And that made you one of the luckiest people on earth according to you.
“It’s weird to see the red carpet so empty,” You said as you walked into the living room holding the tray of food. Smiling at seeing Harry already seated comfortably with a glass of wine having already poured you a glass as well.
“Pfft. It’s boring anyway” He said, helping you set the food before you sat down with him, kicking your shoes under the table and cuddling next to him “You just walk, then stop to take some pictures, then talk to some random interviewer for a random channel, say you’re excited to be there and to be wearing Gucci and keep walking”
“Oh yeah, sounds dreadful” Sarcasm clear in your voice “I don’t know how you could survive that”
He grabbed a handful of popcorn and threw it your way, making you squeal before you retaliated with some salted peanuts, starting a small but very chaotic food fight among the two of you.
You were glad that it was only the two of you. While Harry’s manager offered to make a big celebration in his name for being nominated, he opted not to. Not only because he already received well-deserved repercussions for partying in the middle of a pandemic, but because this was a special moment for him and, even though he won’t admit it, he is scared of letting everyone down if he doesn’t get the win.
You, however, still wanted to make the night special for him. So you suggested you dress up for the red carpet- even if the only carpet you’d walk on is the one in the living room, get drunk and let whatever needs to happen: happen.
He loved the idea, although now he was starting to have second thoughts “‘m not gonna clean this” He said after taking into account the mess you both created.
Popcorn was scattered across the sofa and the rug, he had some pieces of peanuts tangled in his curls and on his suit. You didn’t want to look in the mirror to check how you ended up.
“Well, I wasn’t the one who started it,” You said, shrugging as you took a sip from your wine.
He crooked one eyebrow at you, ready to make his usual teasing comments known. But just as he opened his mouth, the opening number of the ceremony was starting.
The Grammys were broadcasted on tv, but all the nominees had a link where they should enter the moment their category is announced. Harry got it all set up in the living room, the computer and the camera ready to focus on him when needed. Yes, this was odd, everything was odd in these trying times. But you were glad they managed to pull through it and celebrate the artists like they deserve, even if it’s miles apart for their safety.
You enjoyed the first few numbers, chatting over your bets about who will win what category, yelling at the tv whenever your favorites didn’t receive the golden record player, and laughing at the bad jokes of the presenters.
When the pop categories came, however, the both of you were quiet as a mouse.
You knew Harry was nervous, you’ve never seen him fidgeting this much before. You gave him your hand to hold, to distract himself a little bit and for him to feel your unconditional support, and he squeezed it hard, placing a kiss on your knuckles and patting it softly with his other hand before covering it with it as his leg started moving up and down with a quick pace.
This side of him always surprised you. You were still amazed at how confident Harry was on stage and with people from the industry, yet when it was just the two of you, you could see the real him. The doubts, the second-guessing, the frustrations, the fears, and sadness of a real person. Not from the one that’s putting on a show to please strangers in a room. With you he allowed himself to feel, really feel like he couldn’t do outside the doors of your shared home. And you knew these nominations were eating him up from the inside with the anxiety it produced on him.
Harry was a perfectionist. He felt the weight of the world on his shoulders since he was sixteen, having the responsibility and burden to carry it without a word of complaint. He gave himself out on this album, showing parts of himself his fans would appreciate and accept. The pressure he had was unbearable and he still made it out of bed every morning, ready to give the world more than it could ever ask for.
You were proud of him, you always were and you told him time and time again, knowing he appreciated more than he could say. But sometimes you wished you could take him away for some time, letting him relax and breathe without constantly having to check himself if he did a wrong move or not. If he wins tonight, at least he will know it was all worth it.
The first two nominations were called. You could feel how hard he gripped your hand before he was asked to appear in front of the camera he set up in front of him. He tried to appear unbothered, but only you noticed the way his eyes gleamed with a shimmer of hope.
Harry waved at the camera and politely nodded whenever his name was being announced with his leg bouncing out of frame. But when the presenters called another name, he was the one clapping enthusiastically as his other colleagues received the acclaimed award. Never letting his true feelings show on his face.
You never asked if he was okay after he didn’t win, you knew he would say he is and brush it off like it was nothing. But you also knew that he needed your support at this moment and you gave it freely and lovingly. Cuddling next to him and soothing his hair as he let your hand run through his curls. It was the little moments, the details that let him know that he is loved. And he feels so lucky to be loved by you.
He told you time and time again and proved it to you thousand times more. But every time he said it, every time he showed it… it still brought butterflies to your entire being.
“Okay, love,” He said as soon as they cut through commercials for what it seemed like the tenth time “The album category is up next”
He said that with a serious face. You could tell that he was nervous, it was the most important award in the pop category; he had some strong contenders this year and was not at all convinced that he would win, especially given his other two losses.
You were about to say something, wanting nothing more than to comfort him and shake that mental frown away. But a notification rang on the computer, letting him know that it was time to get online and let people see him as he waited to be called.
He looked at you and smiled, letting you know that he was okay. “It’s just a stupid award,” He said, but you knew it meant more than that.
You smiled understandingly back at him and kissed him on the cheek before getting up to stand in front of the tv but behind the camera as you did in his previous nominations of the night, making it seem like he was alone.
“You got this” You mouthed at him from where you were standing, sending him an encouraging smile and two thumbs up. He replied with a wink and his award-winning smirk as the announcer called his name among the nominees.
Harry waved at the camera and you can already see his name trending on Twitter right now, it’s been too long since his fans have seen him up close and he knew very well what he was doing. That smug bastard.
While the presenter was calling the other nominees, your phone rang. You quickly grabbed it from the table and thanked the gods’ Harry’s vídeo was muted for the time being.
“Hello?” You said quietly, not really paying attention at the name of the caller before you picked up.
Harry had his eyes on the camera, but he furrowed his eyebrows to let you know that he was just as curious as you to know who was calling at this time and at this moment.
“You need to open the door, now!” It was Jeff’s voice. He sounded frantic as he hung up immediately after.
You stood there confused for a second before realizing what was happening.
“And the winner for best pop vocal album is…. Harry Styles’ Fine Line!”
Harry’s eyes widened as he heard his name being called as the winner. He started looking around for you, but you were now gone from your spot only to return seconds later with a golden record player in your hands and tearful eyes.
You were now standing at his side, face away from the camera as the viewers could only see your arms extending the award towards Harry, who had the most beautiful and genuine smile you’ve ever seen.
He took the award and threw it on the sofa next to him, quickly standing enough to reach your face and giving you a one in a lifetime kiss. Not caring that he was on national television at the moment. He was happy.
You felt how his hands cupped your cheek softly as his lips melted with yours. It tasted salty and you didn’t know if it was because of the popcorn or the happy tears on both your eyes. You only knew that this was one of the greatest moments of his life and you were lucky enough to witness it with him.
Soon, Harry had to let go of you, smiling widely at you and mouthing an “I love you” as he sat back down to start his speech. You quickly went back to your place behind the camera and smiled at him with utter pride.
You knew how much he worked for this, to separate himself from the kid he once was and to start his own career by just being Harry. And to see him smile like that… Harry only smiled like that when he was with you. His childlike grin and sparkle in his eyes brought life to your shared home as he held the award close to his heart, finally grasping the idea that that little boy from Cheshire made it.
He made it.
“... I want to thank my mum and my sister, who were always there for me. To the fans that made this record so special and have gifted me with their enormous support. And I want to thank the person I love most in this life” He said, lifting his gaze to meet your teary eyes. He smiled like a thousand suns and gave you a look that was just exuberant with love before placing his eyes back on the camera. “I love you and I couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you so much for this”
You waited a good five seconds after his transmission ended before jumping at him on the sofa, wrapping your arms around him as you plastered kisses all over his face.
“I told you you were going to win!” You said excitedly.
He laughed and kiss your lips with passion “You did” He said between kisses “And I didn’t believe you” one more kiss “If this is not a sign for me to admit that you’re always right, I don’t know what it is”
You smiled before kissing him again, this time with more intent as you let him deepen the kiss, parting your lips as you granted him more access.
Harry grabbed you by the legs and made you straddle his lap, not breaking the kiss once as his hands roamed your back with soft touches.
“You know…” You said, letting out a sigh as his mouth traveled from your lips to your neck “You just kissed me in front of a camera”
He hummed, sending vibrations all over your pulse point “That I did”
“It’s going to be all over Twitter tomorrow”
“I don’t much care right now,” He said, placing his hands on your ass, making your hips slightly buckle against his front as he continued to ravish your neck and collarbones, leaving a trail of marks and soft breaths to follow later.
You chuckled, tangling your fingers through his hair, tugging it lightly so his eyes were on yours once again “Harry, you just won a Grammy!”
“That I did, too” He smirked, pure joy visible in his eyes.
“And how would you want to celebrate? My Grammy award winning boyfriend” You said, moving your hips with more intent and making him let out a groan.
Harry’s pupils grew and turned his eyes into a deep forest green, looking at you hungrily while he grinned “I got a couple of ideas”

A Quiet Place Part II
Wow, I just came back from the movie theatre, and I am so pleased that this movie was everything I wanted it to be. So here it goes, another movie analysis/review.
Dare I say iconique?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was a lot hinging A Quiet Place Part II. It is one of the first movies “back in theaters.” There was a lot of anticipation because the movie got delayed for over a year. But I don’t think it could’ve come out at a more perfect time. One of the things I noticed about the world of A Quiet Place was that, in thematic ways, it reflects our own. In the height of the pandemic, everyone in our world was scared, worried about supplies running low, losing loved ones, and grieving a life they once had. Like in the movie, we were all forced to lay low by staying inside. Maybe I was projecting my own feelings, but I found it to be highly relatable and touching in that way (without being tragic but rather uplifting instead).
Onto the actual contents, though. The opening scene was *chef’s kiss.* You feel tension right away because of how eerily quiet the town is mid-day, a foreshadowing of what’s to come. Except everything is too neat, the cars too perfectly parked, no windows broken -- we know it is the calm before the storm. I love the patient shot of the stoplight changing lights. We are waiting for disaster to strike but just don’t know when it will.
The baseball scene subverted a few of my expectations -- I thought Emmett would be a stranger to the family so I was surprised he turned out to be a friendly family acquaintance. This worked well because it probably made Emmett feel some obligation in helping Evelyn and her family later. I also expected Marcus to hit the ball eventually because of the two initial misses -- but then the fireball passes through the sky and life as they know it is over.
Some part of me expected the flashback scene to be superfluous and just an opportunity to show John Krasinski again, but it served its purpose -- when characters refer to “that day,” we feel the gravity of it because of what we saw in the opening segment.
I didn’t expect the monster when it first appeared. You expect Lee to have a conversation with the cop, for the monster to show up soon but not just yet -- and then Lee, almost dissociating, is rushing back to his truck after what was no doubt the most traumatic sight of his life at that point. He starts the car with the it’s-going-to-be-all-right facade a parent must don for their child.
There were several other excellent “oh-shit” moments in this movie. One of my favorites was, after Evelyn sets off the booby trap that attracts the monster (an excellent oh-shit moment in and of itself but already revealed in the trailer), Marcus gets his foot caught in a bear trap. When he screams, it’s like watching a glass you knocked over to the floor crash into a million pieces. My brain was just one big shout of “OH SHIT” and nothing else. Emily Blunt’s acting was superb here and throughout -- the way she played desperation and a simultaneous love for her child was palpable.
Cillian Murphy is an excellent addition to the cast. I was particularly mesmerized by his acting in all the breathy dialogue scenes where he’s protesting against either Evelyn or Regan. Emmett felt believable in all his sweaty, scruffy glory.  He keeps insisting he doesn’t want to help, but, very wholesomely, he always does. He’s a sucker for them from the start. And whether he and Regan like it or not, he is slowly becoming the protective father figure in her life. He can’t get in the way of her plans and her genius, and he can never replace Lee, but the love is there. I love their arc.
And speaking of Regan...
Wow, did the kids in this movie shine. Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupp absolutely exceeded my expectations. Boy, could Jupp scream and look scared for his life. He was completely believable in his role. And Simmonds walks with this quiet strength, this gentleness. I loved what they did with the scenes where Regan and Emmett were struggling to communicate and she had to keep bringing him back down to Earth. I love the way this movie changes the game for what communication looks like -- there is rarely yelling or even regular-volume conversation. Instead there is sign language, exhales, whispers, the mouthing of words. This creates a mesmerizing atmosphere for the movie. These silences and moments of white-noise do not mean the absence of humans speaking to each other.
I’m not sure how I feel about the shady, red-eyed community of people on the docks. They looked like they were all on drugs and walked like zombies. And the creepy little girl who trapped Emmett just felt like she belonged to another genre of horror? This isn’t a “creepy children” horror movie, it’s an eldritch monster horror movie! It wasn’t the most believable plot point but I wasn’t super opposed to it, either. I wanted to know more about these shady people. I fully expected them to take Emmett and Regan back to their leader or tribal base, but nope, they were just shady people (the kind not worth saving).
This isn’t a criticism per say but I was definitely expecting more scenes between Emmett and the entire Abbott family, so I was a little sad they split them up and we didn’t get a reunion. This is a possible tease for a third movie -- as is the expanding world of the island and the lack of a total end to the apocalypse. And, of course, there are hints that Evelyn and Emmett might have a future together -- Evelyn symbolically takes off her wedding ring and Emmett reluctantly but naturally fills the father role for the children. At the same time, we leave off at a point where we can imagine what happens next and don’t need to know more -- it can be up to our interpretation. They can end the movie there, since it is clear that the children have figured out how to defeat the monsters.
And speaking of that, the ending had a very Stranger Things feel to it. Never mind that the monsters from each respective series look almost identical -- the ending takes a surprise turn when it is the two Abbott children who take things into their own hands and kill the monsters while their parental figures literally sit back and watch in awe. I appreciated the message here: that young people are innovative, strong and brave enough to do the right thing. They are capable of great things; it’s all right to trust them and let them take the reins.
I think the movie’s atmosphere is just lovely. Just because it’s horror doesn’t mean there can’t be scenic shots of a sunset on the beach. That’s what I like about both movies so much -- they don’t feel like most horror movies because they still leave room for beauty and tenderness and hope.
Overall, a very enjoyable film. I would love to see the family reunion if there is a sequel -- and that the potential sequel is helmed by the right writers/director once again! Go, John Krasinski! He killed it.

a/n: hi!! you’re so sweet, thank you! i’m sorry for putting off this request for so long, i wanted to recover first, so if you’re still following my blog here it is! thank you so much for your kind words and i hope you enjoy!
ethan
- it wasn’t actually planned to watch a horror movie at first, but when you and ethan got to the theatres you realized that the movie that u guys planned to watch had actually just sold out of seats
- and ethan was kind of bummed over it bc he was looking forward to a movie date with u but he got over it quickly, and offered u to choose one instead
- u took a peak at the movie posters nearby and saw one that caught ur eye and you were like. that one.
- he doesn’t really think much of it honestly he’s like “okay! whatever u say” cos let’s be honest he just wants to spend time w u he didn’t come for the movie he don’t care
- so when you guys finally took ur seats and started watching, ethan didn’t know what to expect at all so when the jumpscare came he jolted in his seat and was like WHAT THE FUCK
- he turns to u, expecting u to have the same reaction, but u just kept watching??? not even bothering to look his way LMAOOO
- so ethan’s kind of surprised but he’s proud!! he has a s/o that doesn’t get scared easily what a badass
- after that first jumpscare he relaxes back into his chair and all the scary scenes that happened afterwards he glances at you (and u still had no reaction) n he can’t help but feel at awe at how both invested and nonchalant u were at the movie bc it had ethan lowkey shaking in his seat LOL
- when the movie finished u were talking about just how good the movie was while u guys walked home, and ethan was like ,,,hey that didn’t scare you at all? and you replied “ofc not, i don’t get scared by horror movies!” while beaming at him
- and u look good as fuck smiling so ethan feels his face grow warm n ykw he’s happy he learned something new about u
- also he’s lowkey impressed so W. he now has an additional excuse to bring u on more dates
harry
- horror movies don’t scare this boy but he isn’t the biggest fan of them either
- so when you guys were crashing at harry’s house, u decided to watch a movie and harry’s fine with it bc he’s with u :D
- and there was a new movie trending in the program he uses to watch movies n it interested u so u asked if he could watch it with u
- harry’s whipped so obviously he says to go ahead
- like ethan, he doesn’t know what to expect at first but harry quickly realized it was a horror movie about 1/3 into the story
- he nudges u and tells u that it was going to be a horror movie (he wasn’t sure if u were into that sort of stuff) he’s surprised when u reassure him that it’s fine
- like said before he’s not a huge fan of horror movies even tho he could handle them as well u can, so he huddles next to u and wraps a large blanket around the two of u with a bowl of snacks
- u guys just relax the entire time bc no matter how terrifying the movie got harry’s warmth was such an overwhelming, comfortable presence so it didn’t matter at all
- after the movie ended, u guys got way too comfortable and u both really didn’t want to move, so it ended up as a horror movie binge night with you sitting on his lap, arms wrapped around ur waist with the blanket wrapped around harry’s head as u two continued to invest urselves in the movie
- drifted off to sleep at around 5 am fucked up sleep schedule gang wya
- horror movies would usually induce nightmares or sleepless nights, but u guys slept peacefully with a good dream that night (or morning, since the sun was basically rising by the times u guys slept lol)
zion
- sneaky lil shit
- zion thinks he’s slick because u know the basic “watch a horror movie with ur s/o, it’s so cute when they burrow into your arms so they feel like they’re protected!!!”
- and he thinks he’s a genius so he invites u over to his place to watch one of the more scarier movies
- he’s a “gentleman” somewhat so he chooses a more tame movie, like one with just one or two jumpscares
- you both were huddled in front of the television screen and zion kept touching shoulders with u and making snarky remarks like “huh y/n u scared yet? i bet ur scared >:)”
- however, he underestimated the horror movie’s scary level so when the first jumpscare came around he’s caught off guard
- expected u to hug his waist or something in reaction but he’s genuinely surprised when u just kept watching on like it was nothing
- after the movie ends, you said “damn that was it?? zion i expected more i thought u were going to show me a scary movie!!”
- tbh all zion hears is more time with u so he’s like BET and chooses the next few horror movies that were on and doesn’t even bother to watch them, he’s just staring at u intensely to see if u have any reaction
- there wasn’t
- he was pretty sad that his plan to get u into his arms failed but he takes pride in having a s/o that can watch scary stuff with ease
- also he’s a huge fan of horror themes so now there is a golden opportunity to now have u play scary games with him if ur interested of course
- secretly praising himself for inviting u to watch horror movies bc now he gets to share his hobbies with u!!!
- but zion is extremely easy to read so u already figured out his secret plan all along
- “just ask me to cUDDLE WITH U LIKE A NORMAL PERSON U IDIOT”
- “YOU FIGURED IT OUT???”
eugene
- you were actually the one who suggested watching a horror movie with him
- you guys took a trip to the theatres but none of u guys had anything particular in mind which was like mind boggling to eugene cos he was like WAIT,,, I THOUGHT WE CAME HERE BC U KNEW WHAT TO WATCH and u were like NO WAY ME TOO ???
- so obviously there was some improvisation and u did the suggestion
- and eugene’s like “pfffft u think u can handle a scary movie??”
- he’s not easily scared tho, he has the “well it’s just a movie, it can’t hurt me” mindset so he doesn’t mind watching a horror movie at all
- he’s more concerned about you honestly, but yk him he’s not gonna say it out loud >:( tsundere looking ass
- and obv since none of u guys minded u went ahead and seated ourselves in the movies
- eugene’s relaxed and all,,, but he does get quite jumpy whenever an unexpected scene happens
- so when they rolled around he made an audible gasp and glanced at u immediately
- u were already looking at him with an amused face bc ur normally tsundere bf just got jumpscared LOOOL
- eugene doesn’t really care if u were or weren’t scared by the movies
- but eugene was like WOWWWWWW Y/N I SEE HOW IT IS when he saw u laughing at him
- watched the rest of the movie with him sulking but u did hold his hand after tho (begrudgingly LOL)
- was jokingly mad at you but after the movie ends, he presses a kiss to your cheek and asked if u wanted to watch another in the theatres after u guys refilled ur snacks
lawrence
- honestly, his thought process was the exact same as zion’s
- lawrence enjoys having u in his arms while ur vulnerable bc he likes the idea of being ur protector
- he’s far far more discreet about it and purposefully leads u to watch a movie with him, and chooses a movie with an innocent looking poster so u wouldn’t see what was coming >:D
- he thinks your innocence is adorable so he’s super eager to show u a scary movie
- lawrence already knows what’s going to happen in the movie so he’s super prepared and he’s honestly only staring at you
- but when u were just there relaxing and calmly watching the movie with some people getting bludgeoned or something lawrence was like,, “this isn’t part of the plan HOLD UP”
- kind of disappointed that there wasn’t any reaction but you guys made it up afterwards because when u exited the movie theater with your arm around his, you were excitedly talking about the entire thing and you said something like “lawrence!!! i didn’t know you were into horror movies, you picked such a good one!”
- his disappointment washes off immediately because seeing your face light up was so cute and it was 100% more worth it than some cheap tactic ironic lawrence
- he nuzzles your hair and replies that he’d knew that u’d like it (he did not)
- lawrence comes up with like,,, 294713 more plans to get cuddles from u after
- but you see through it bc he’s cute when he’s needy so let it slide plsplspls and give my favorite psycho some love <3
