i hate how the fandom treats alyx sometimes. like no... gordon and barney are not her uncles/dads/siblings. it really frustrates me when people can't comprehend characters being friends. when there are 2 characters the fandom feels the need to put them in one of the two boxes: they either have a family dynamic or a romantic one. friends can be close, friends can be your found family, family dynamics and friendships are different. its not wrong to headcanon barney as her uncle or sibling its ok its nice but why gordon. it's weird gordon is around her age gordon is kinda her canon love interest you don't have to ship them but he's not her brother or uncle or dad why can't they be friends. kleiner is alyx's uncle and eli is her dad you don't need to bring gordon and barney into this not everything is about them. eli azian and kleiner raised her. she has parents she has an uncle she has family for the love of god let her have friends. like i get it you ship gordon and barney but you don't have to make their relationship with alyx a family one just so she doesn't get in their way. they can be friends. freemance and freehoun are fine and it's fine to not like these ships. you just don't have to slap a family label to everything that is not dating. people can be friends! with big age gaps even. alyx and barney are friends! gordon and alyx are friends! if you don't care about her that's fine nothing wrong with focusing on characters that you like but please don't pretend that you care if you do it by not taking her relationships with others seriously. god help me

I don't think freemance shippers are pedos or whatever but it's still hm kinda weird that valve aged alyx up to make her a love interest. It could've been any other character but no they went with the one gordon knew as a literal BABY. It's a little sus is all I'm saying.

OKAY SO this is obviously bait, but I'm going to answer it anyway because the premise of this ask is so fucking funny.

Imagine being this guy and genuinely believing that the development for Alyx's character went like this: Valve decides to make sequel to HL1 -> Gordon needs a love interest -> Let's go with Alyx Vance, a character who definitely existed as a concept in HL1! -> Oh shit! Alyx, the character who definitely already existed in our minds, is only 4 years old :( -> Ugh, fine, I guess we gotta set the game 20 years in the future so it's not weird for her to flirt with our 27-year-old protagonist.

And not: Valve decides to make a more character-based sequel -> bases several characters on HL1 NPCs, gives them names and backstories, and retcons that they player character has always known them -> decides that Gordon needs a companion -> invents the coolest and hottest female companion ever -> makes her another retconned character's daughter to make the player feel more attached to her and explain why there's a hot 24-year-old woman in this universe where everyone else is 40+.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If normal people thought it was even remotely weird for a character to be canonically attracted to another same-age character who just happens to have been in stasis for two decades, the backlash would've started in mainstream spaces way before 2020. The game was out for 16 years before anyone decided to make a big deal out of this. The problem is you!

Go touch grass and maybe play the games sometime.

Imagine Jaune regaining some of his memories, remembering how the Cat was ONCE actually kind and nice, knowing that there is goodness in CC. He wants to go retrieve it, save it from becoming, well, the Canon CC. The manipulative, murderous one.

But Alyx, of course, is all like "Hey. That guy killed me. He abused you."

Jaune naturally retorts with it being a different version of the cat - Of course They could be the same way, but if Jaune can actually get the cat and get back to remnant, maybe it could get actual therapy, and learn to be less. CC-ish?

and they get into an argument over needing to save everyone, but not someone who is/was/might not yet be a murderer.

But then it gets into the whole reason why Time Travel and Changing the Time line is weird - If Jaune did find someway to the ever after, would he need to go back to save the cat? Would he run into himself? How many of him can there be?

Alyx is in the 'future' of where she's from, but Jaune got sent to the past, and back to the future, but also never saw himself fall? The cat Got Got by Neo, Are they still alive or is the Ever After outside of time?

Because it seems like we're going off of some kind of BTTF rules, but also not? Because Alyx still went back in time? Unless in the PlotBunny AU Jaune still gets sent to the EA, but then he never would've met Alyx and Juniper in the Beacon era?

It's all way too complicated, but maybe, just maybe, Jaune could save the Curious Cat. Probably not be in a relationship with them in this timeline, but maybe just friends. or something. Save the Cat from the worst of themself.

The thing is I can totally see him doing this. And also Alyx trying to protect him from himself

Jaune is selfless to an unhealthy degree, so I can totally see him wanting to yeet himself into another dimension to try and help the cat. Without thinking of the paradoxical consequences

OC vs Cockroach

@the-down-upside-finch tagged me in this and I'm gonna tag @anyablackwood @thetruearchmagos @indecentpause @druidx and whoever else wants to play (no pressure)

Rules: Rate your OCs on how well they’d fare against a cockroach

(For this one, we're gonna get a main character from each of my WIPS >:) because i love y'all and you deserve it)

Piers: 8/10 They'll jump and maybe screech from being startled, especially if it's close by, but they can squash it and clean it up after a bit

Brigid: 0/10 They do not do bugs. Like, at all. Melody will have to come evict it from their dorm room. Alternatively, they'll panic and try to set it on fire and likely scorch a couple other things in the process.

Izumi: 2/10 oh god the way they move Izumi will scream and will make Lapis or Andy come kill it. If she's left to her own devices, there's a 50/50 chance she'll either smash it with her shoe or just cry until it goes away. She's forgetful enough though that she will forget it existed though after a few hours...

Garlan: 10/10 This woman will pick that bug up barehanded and toss it out the window. Her office is covered in papers and stray offerings so roaches (or equivalent in her world) are pretty common

Bithos: 9/10 Smash that fucker, no hesitation, but he might get a little grossed out trying to clean it up.

Cassander: 2/10 No thank you. He will actively call Felix, who is on a mission, to come get it. If it disappears, he will burn the entire house down rather than it come back. (He's not scared of them, but he finds them weird and unnerving).

Alyx: 5/10 Might have a hard time finding the roach (blind) and will absolutely panic if he loses it. If she does find it, she can kill it and toss it without a problem.

Jesse: -10/10 Screaming crying, Lucio has to come get it before he has a mental breakdown (again)

Carter: 10/10 Easy peasy, will pick the bug up and gently place it outside, much to the horror of his husband who is terrified of roaches

Hank: 7/10 Despite being a farming man, he does NOT like how they move. He can get it killed (eventually) but it might take him a minute or to to get the guts to kill it.

LeBlanc: -1000000/10 He opened a package of wafers once and there was one inside the box that fell on him and the poor man has never been the same. He will scream like a little girl and someone else (Micah) will have to come kill it. If it somehow goes missing, he will never step foot in that room again unless it is killed.

Alba Grey: 5/10 Depends. If she's trying to impress Mavi and/or Tabs, she can do it easy peasy, but if she's alone? She might have a slight crying session and have to summon all of her courage to smack it with her shoe. (Don't let the badass exterior fool you)

Karson: ???/10 Isn't bothered by bugs in his space. The only reason he'll even deal with it is if August sees it and gets scared.

Cal: 0/10 NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE this boy does not do bugs (although there is a chance he'll think it's a hallucination instead and just ignore it in hopes it'll go away....)

Eddie: 10/10 This man can deal with bugs so easily. Smashed and cleaned up before anyone (his daughter) notices

This is my favourite episode in the entire series so far. I had some theories for what was so special about this episode and I got a few right, actually. Some, of course, by a technicality, but still very good to see.

I’ve marked the ones I got right, and I’ll keep the ones I didn’t for future chapters.

THIS WILL NOT BE IN APPEARANCE ORDER BUT RATHER IN ORDER OF HOW IT'S WRITTEN DOWN IN MY LIST!

Old Man Jaune Backstory

We start the episode with Jaune falling the same way Ruby did at the start of the volume, and him following after Crescent Rose. He finds the clock tree, which sends him back in time several decades. Jaune spends probably thirty years in depression (with a short intermission, but we'll get to that in a bit) until he sees team RWBY fall from the sky.

Old Man Jaune Turns Back Into Normal Jaune (technicality)

We see an image of normal Jaune in the wiggly woggly water slime goo thing while they walk on the weird road.

Alyx Shows Up

We find out the truth about Alyx's story and that she had a brother named Luis. Jaune becomes the Rusted Knight and leads them through the Ever After. He is troubled by the intense difference in Alyx's characterization in the book verse the real Alyx, and soon learned Alyx wasnt just a petulant child, but selfish and cruel. She poisoned Jaune and sacrificed her brother, who was kind and clever.

Penny Shows Up (technicality)

We Jaune painfully looking away from an image of Penny in the wiggly woggly water slime goo thing while they walk on the weird road. Although I didn't think she'd be back back, i did think Jaune's memory of her would talk to him, tell him it's okay. But there's nothing dictating that that can't still happen later.

Summer Rose Shows Up (technicality)

When Ruby passes the first wiggly woggly water slime goo thing, we see a blink-and-you'll-miss-it image of Summer Rose following all of Ruby's movements like a mirror. Same as with Penny, to be honest, but Ruby's memory of Summer talking to her seems much more likely than Penny. Maybe even Yang's memoty of Summer talking to her. They're bound to remember her differently. I don't think Summer will be alive in the sense that she can come back, they played the Hound up way too much last volume for that to happen, so if we were to get a Red Like Roses part 3, it would probably be when Ruby's facing off against the Big Bad Wolf (grimmified Summer)

Bumbleby Does The Smoochie Smooch + Bumbleby Say The Love Words

In a dramatic standoff at two unfinished rope bridges meeting on a platform, Yang and Blake are forced to finally be open and honest about their feelings for one another. Clearly, the Ever After was also tired of their bullshit and decided enough is enough. Blake tells Yang to just say it and Yang tells her she loves her at the same time Blake says she loves her too. They finally come together and make out. Btw, right when they kissed, my sister’s computer died. I swear, I almost cried! At lease it didn’t happen right before the kiss.

Everyone was happy they finally stopped beating around the bush. to quote Jaune, "feels like I've been waiting forever for that."

I actually got quite a few correct, huh? Legit my favourite episode, hands down. I'm so excited for next week.

RWBY Volume 9 Episode 10: Of Solitude and Self

i have thoughts. here are some of those thoughts.

I am going...to try and keep this in chronological order, but it's midnight, and I tend to ramble the longer I've been awake. So bear with me.

First off, okay, so we're definitely going to get details of exactly what happened with Summer later down the line. Presumably, she, Raven, and Qrow ('cause who else would Raven have portaled too yanno), along with maybe some others who knows, went on the offensive vs Mommy Salami and things didn't work out. If that's the case, boy does that color Qrow's character even further. It's no wonder he used to stay far away from the people he cares about. Also wow Raven nice to see you again, been a couple of volumes.

I'm glad that Rubes got to have a sort of posthumous pep-talk from her mother, even if it's something as simple as "I love you the way you are". I appreciate that she didn't need to be talk-no-jutsu'd into getting the theme of the volume, but rather it's a conclusion she came to herself. After a whole volume of seeing her all morose and depressed, it put the biggest smile on my face to see her finally accept that she is Ruby Rose, and that's all she's ever needed to be.

On a less profound note

WHOOOO RED LIKE ROSES PART III FUCK YEAH BABY THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITIN FOR THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. Whoever animated that first little sequence of Ruby going ham on the cat with Crescent Rose? I want to kiss you. You deserve the world. Brings me right back to volume 1. (Was it Arryn? I feel like it was Arryn considering how much they love Soul Eater but I can't remember if they've done any combat sequences aaaah)

The Cat got the shit kicked out of them in a great team fight. Doing a whole ass 5 v 1, even with someone as formidable as the CC in the fray, couldn't have been easy to choreograph, so props to the whole team on that one for making it feel sick. The Cat is a bit of a more tragic character in retrospect with the tale the Blacksmith told (also--the Ever After is the primordial world? The Brothers didn't make it? Shit, color me surprised), but at the same time...yeah RIP Bozo.

'Twas curiosity that killed the cat or something like that idk

The fuckin piano reprise of This Will Be the Day oh my GOOOOOD. Chills. The music in this volume has been absolutely phenomenal. Of course there are the vocal tracks, but the score??? Martin Gonzalez you beautiful man. Bless your heart, bless your body, bless your soul.

Neo. Neo Neo Neo. Neopolitan, baby girl...I'm gonna miss you, as I'm sure a lot of people will. Even the people who hate this show like you because you're just so much fun. I remember back in the day when I was a kid and unironically used the word waifu to describe female characters I was fixated on, you were my precious little Ice Cream Wife and I would burn the world for you. It's so weird thinking about your origins as a character (Inspired by a genderbent Torchwick cosplay, Monty threw you in at the last second in order to not have to animate Torchwick escaping...though I'm sure there's more to it than that), to how you've progressed, to where you are now. This is the last we're gonna get of you for now, I'm sure. But at the same time, I can totally see you showing up for the final fight vs Salem or Cinder or whoever to get your licks in. You were a welcome addition this volume, even if you DID drive Ruby to drink the Bad Tea. It's hard to hate you when you're so fucking cute.

I am...not going to pretend to not be a little disappointed that Boomer Jaune was but a temporary thing. When The Blacksmith was talking about Alyx fixing what she'd broken, I was expecting like, idk, his sword to be repaired, but I quickly realized that she wasn't even the one who did that, and then I was like "oh no" and before I knew it, BAM back at it again with the yee-yee ass haircut. At least next volume comes with new designs so we won't have to deal with that any longer. I appreciate the streaks of grey, symbolizing that it's not like he's regressed in any way, but...Jauney Boy, get that wolf's tail back. You rocked that shit.

That's all I can bring myself to write down for now. I'm sure I'll be talking about this episode--and this whole volume--for a WHILE. I'm gonna sit on it for a bit, but I think it might take volume 6's spot for my favorite of the bunch, which is impressive because volume 6 is hella good y'all. Thank you so much to the crew (GOD I hope certain people who worked on this volume return for the next one, I could feel the love they have for the craft and for this show and I've adored getting to see their thoughts on each episode as it aired these past few weeks) and everyone involved in bringing to us. It's been rough lately, that's for sure, but I mean it when I say that RWBY is one of my favorite shows out there, and I wish nothing but the best for its future and the future of everyone who brought it to life.

now I wait probably about a year or so to see Nora/Ren/Sun's reaction to Blake and Yang finally getting together. Until then, I will drown myself in fanfiction.

asgard's wraff too (immediate impression)

I had a brief go at Asgard's Wrath 2, one of the flagship games of the Quest 2/3, published by Meta themselves through their 'Oculus Studios'. This game is provided free to every Quest 3 owner so I figured I'd give it a shot lol. Though I didn't play for all that long before I got a headache and had to stop. (I think the headset was a bit tight, it's very finicky to get this right even with a better strap, and games that demand more movement tend to be worse for it.)

Asgard's Wrath is not to be confused with Asura's Wrath, the fascinatingly odd QTE-based game featuring animation by Studio 4°C. No, what we have is a first-person action game based on Norse mythology. Actually this new game seems to be broadening the mythological palette a bit, but the prologue/recap segment keeps things Norse.

tbh I wasn't particularly sold, but this game's been getting rave reviews everywhere, so maybe it gets better.

When I booted the game it had to compile some 4500 shaders - kinda odd, every Quest is the same so surely it could come with the shaders precompiled? Nevertheless, once that was done the game could get going. What I found was... kinda awkward, if I'm honest.

Broadly speaking Asgard's Wrath II features thumbstick movement with a directional iframe dash, and you can swing your sword and hit stuff. The opening level sees you fight a giant gryphon-like monster which flies around you and shoots laser beams. Credit where it's due, I think it's about as decent an implementation of this kind of thing as you could hope for... but in that very respect it really starkly shows the limitations of VR for action games.

Standing up and playing this game did not, fundamentally, feel more ~immersive~ than sitting at my desk playing an FPS game. If anything it felt less so. It felt sort of like I was piloting a mech rather than standing there as a Norse goddess. Especially when your character is flung bodily around: you look down and see your character's body near-prone, but your proprioception tells you exactly where your feet are, and it isn't there.

Movement generally feels quite glidy - no doubt too much up-and-down camera movement would be a motion sickness trigger, but also you can feel that you're physically standing on the floor, and somehow that is more noticeable when you're supposed to be walking than when you're supposed to be flying in a game like Rez Infinite. If you try to physically move around, the world sorta slides away from you in a weird way. I honestly think I would have preferred the teleportation based movement used in games like Half Life Alyx.

The whole thing felt like it was constantly calling attention to the difference between my physical body and virtual body.

Still, all that aside...

The game throws you in to a recap of the previous game. You get a little controls tutorial in a mysterious mystical space by disembodied arms belonging to the Norns, then you ride a giant bird through a series of vignettes from the previous game; then you get to wander around a tavern that is supposedly a prison where Loki used to be contained (always up to his tricks), encountering sort of phantasms of almost all the Norse gods telling you off for trusting Loki. Plus a little band playing tunes with a centaur in it, that part was cute.

This story, where a nameless player character is just sort of crowbarred into Norse mythology, feels incredibly 'videogames excuse plot'. From the way the recap was told, it was pretty evidently the kind of game where you're led around through a series of setpieces, while being told that you're powerful and important and a big deal. It's a story that's hard to take seriously in its own right.

I don't love the character designs. They look like a Marvel movie crashed into a truck full of concept art, full of ostentatious armour and huge horns. The way they talk, as well, feels very much like 'I am trying to get this exposition over as efficiently as possible'.

Things picked up a bit when a gryphon shows up and attacks you. The big bird here looks great and movies really well. The mechanics involved a few types of attack pattern to respond to - it's a tutorial boss so nothing too complicated.

The main weak point is the actual act of swing the sword at the big bird when it's down. It felt sort of like I was just waggling at it with a foam sword - there is no way to disguise the fact that you are swinging a small plastic controller which isn't actually hitting anything. But it was also hard to tell how much damage I was doing.

After you beat the gryphon you fall in a lake. Here, you're floating back-first into the gloom, but in practice you're falling horizontally, so again it has that disconnect.

OK, now let's talk about rendering. You knew it was coming x3

A lot of the materials in this game have that sort of smooth, noticeably low-poly look you see on the Quest. The game does try pretty hard with baked lighting and what appeared to be some envmapped specular reflections, and one point in the opening sequence had a dynamic light playing across the hands of the Norns - that was neat. I was also impressed by the rope physics while you're riding the giant bird. Certainly those 4500 shaders are doing some work in here. The main issue is, as with every Quest game, the lack of any dynamic shadows.

The tavern scene seems to be running into some kind of limit with showing skinned meshes, since most characters only appear when you move near to them, and they're all rendered with this Fresnel glow shader that hides any actual lighting information. But the characters rendered more normally generally look good. The animations at least are solid and abundant. Expressive body language is vital in a game.

I'll give it a bit more time at some point, but overall this feels very much like a game that was made as 'flagship action game to prove an AAA-style game is viable in VR', and on that front I feel like I'll take some convincing still - everything so far feels like it would work a lot better on a flat screen. It doesn't really have much identity as a game so far either - its interpretation of Norse mythology is gaudy and not particularly original, and it really feels like it's taking itself way too seriously. I think a dash of humour and weirdness would help tremendously. But maybe the Egyptian and Aztec sections will be more appealing, Norse shit is kinda played out these days.

RWBY E5 - The Parfait Predicament

Holy shit we are halfway through the volume!

Weird I can see some concept art in the intro when I hover my cursor over it but not on the screen. Its all green and swirly with Ruby looking at it.

Wow Ruby fucking just booked it out of there, but CC is back to being chill, and apparently they share a gut reaction with Alyx.

Little comforting Ruby was cute and I love the cast using Ruby like a structure or furniture, and Ruby enabling Yang’s posing XD

Interesting, OK so when things wear out or lose their way they return to the Ever After, CC granting some of their heart seems to be bolster the figure emotionally, hence the Prince calming down and Herb realizing they lost their way. Then you reincarnate, which also explains why CC was so casual about Oz’s reincarnation and how dumb they find the one’s who made it. Though despite that the concept of dearth is understood.

Dammit CC stop teasing us X3

OK so more or less what was speculated by the lines about the Prince save he didn’t go to Herb, he was just so broken up by losing to Alxys’s cheating he reincarnated as someone who would always win. Also CC mocking exposition and also highlighting how they are making it visually interesting with their antics is so meta.

That poor merchant :’(

I am SOOO sorry about that... I wrote it in 30 minutes after watching some of them painful Episode 10 scenes over and over, as well as THAT SCENE from Episode 6 to fuel the sad. The ask was sitting in my inbox and I had to release it before I started the pregnancy fic, so I wouldn't be distracted by it!

It took me to a dark place, man; like, Daemon's still quite detached in that blurb, Babey just died, so he's kinda reacting a little weird. He's half in disbelief, super in shock, and toward the end it starts to dawn on him what has just happened. The scene just haunts me, you know - Daemon sitting with Babey's body in a bed of blood, just absently admiring how beautiful she is while everyone else mourns. I think they'd all be really cut by how devastated he is, the way he keeps stroking her hair and touching her face and holding her hand, how he refuses to let anyone else touch her or take her away, his complete and utter disinterest in the world around him. Viserys attempts to shake him out of it, and he'd be traumatised as fuck, too; seeing his babey, in some respects the very image of Aemma, dead in an eerie facsimile of so long ago. But his brother, oh man, his brother needs him, is so clearly set adrift and lost and gone. If he'd ever doubted Daemon, he can't now.

And the kid - Daemon's feelings might change in that AU later on, but in that moment he isn't resentful of the baby. He's the last piece of his mother; Daemon's gonna be a complete helicopter parent over that little dude. Obsessive, really. I imagine he'd name the boy after whatever the male equivalent of Babey's name is (e.g. if she's 'Alysanne', he might be 'Alyn' or 'Alyx'), too.

Oof. It was awful, man. But for anyone who needed that dose of pain; gods, I hope it delivered.

Might be a weird ask, but after that convo about the JSAer's ages, what about their partners and kids (especially the kids)? Because of the sliding time scale, characters like Jennifer-Lynn, Todd, Rick, Jesse and Jack Knight are presumed to have been born sometime in the late 80s or 90s (as of 2023)? So that leaves a situation in which most JSAers kind of avoided having kids until they were in their 60-70s? That or maybe DC will one day say that these kids also are time-displaced.

see my best friend katie (@slaapkat) and i have spent ages trying to figure this one out, and i know the folks over on the cbr forums (which is basically the last bastion of old time fandom, not that that's necessarily a good thing) have been recently discussing this exact thing post-lost children finale... and, well, there's no easy answer!

there's cases like rex tyler, where even by wendi's first appearance in showcase 1956 #56 it's pretty obvious she's significantly younger than rex (she's introduced as a 'girl' and rex already has grey temples by that cover date of '65) and that's made even more clear in hourman 1999 #24 when their age difference actually leads to some arguments about rex not getting the hip music wendi listens to but. that's just one case of many and it's one that'd have to be updated with the timeline, too.

i think the solution is either time displacement or what i'm personally leaning towards is having the jsa's time in ragnarok come sooner and last longer, have them come back at a decent age (having effectively been frozen during their time there) and then settle down and have families. with that particular avenue, i think we'd reach around the same ages roy thomas had in mind during infinity inc. i've gotta say this is one of the main reasons i love judy garrick's introduction so much, having her born in 1949 is absolutely a stroke of genius and jay & joan having the first of the jsa kids is perfect considering they're the only ones of the 'default' couples to have ever discussed marriage & kids in their actual golden age comics (as per flash comics 1940 #35 and #45)!

that being said, even keeping canon as it is, i don't think it's actually as big of a concern as it seems at first glance! out of the original team mcnider, kent, al, wes, corrigan, johnny t and terry never had kids -- with the caveat that grant emerson isn't really al's son and the closest thing wes has to a kid, sandy, is kept ageless in sand monster form for as long as necessary. similarly, johnny t's peachy pet can keep her original timeline as she doesn't inherit any legacy, and the hawks can have hector at any point because it's his return from the dead as fate that needs to be in line with the current timeline instead of his actual birth. as stated above, rick also requires no real update because rex could've simply met wendi much later and dating a twenty-something year old actress as a status symbol doesn't make him more of a creep than he already was if it happened in the 60s or in the 90s.

and here's where it gets problematic. david & jack knight... well, let's say ted's in the same boat as rex, he's not a family man type to begin with. jennie & todd? i can see alan holding onto his confirmed bachelor status for as long as he's able until societal pressure wears him down, and mr gbc ceo getting with young secretary alyx rose thorn makes him a believable straight cliche that would raise no suspicions (and it would also account for the blind anger of the 90s sentinel era, he hates what he's had to do... plus, you know, other real world events of the 90s that might influence for the worse the way alan feels about being gay)*. the one that's really giving me trouble is jesse quick but i suppose we can either move up johnny and libby's wedding and allow johnny the normal course of his original canon (he was still a bachelor living with tubby watts by adventure comics #174 in '52) or jesse's older than she looks and the speed force lets her age real slow.

as for their partners, in the case of those who aren't simply with significantly younger women, it's canon that they were all bathed in that weird ian karkull shadowland radiation that makes the jsaers themselves eternally sorta young as per all-star squadron annual #3.

*as a side-note to the alan situation -- considering his marriage with alyx rose thorn lasted precisely a day and a night, molly's timeline doesn't need to be moved up for longer than a couple years when alan eventually gives in to that too and we can have their divorce somewhere around 2011 as a fun reference to the life-changing events of new 52.

I hope you’ve been alright. Sorry I haven’t been keeping in touch, things are a bit turbulent around here at the moment, but I’m safe, and I hope you are as well.

I have to say, I really admire you for pushing through difficult days the way you do. We all know that problems can come unexpectedly, you never know when you might step on a goldmine (or is this one ‘landmine’? Russel isn’t answering, so you might have to correct me on that). But being able to spring right back up, even if it takes some time, and fight back against your struggles? That’s something I’ve been trying to do all my life, and your attitude helps me keep going, in a way? My point is, you give me hope, buggy. Being around you makes me want to do more than just survive. With you, more than ever, I want to live, I want to stay up late lost in random conversations, I want to laugh with you, but I feel like I can be vulnerable with you too. It’s weird and a little bit distracting, but… I love it, and I love you too. I’m not sure if what I said even made sense, but in our crazy world, nothing really makes sense, and I think I’m okay with that.

Shephard Swap AU? (Mitchell is put in infinite stasis, Adrian ends up Abluquerque for the HDTF story, their experiences in Black Mesa are kept completely the same)

I wanted to ask, what *you* think would happen/change because of this, seeing as this type of AU really fully hinges on your own interpretation of Adrian Shephard.

Bro i fucking Love pondering shit so absolutely do not apologize for askin this, cuz its a real thinker and i spent like 3 or so hours straight writing it lmao it could be better but this is a first draft and im not editting it cuz im lazy

So obviously, this is already a challenge because the plot of hdtf is just,,,, one of the plots of all time. its contrived and relies on A Lot of asumptions and a mischarcterization/understanding of gman and how and why he does what he does. granted we dont know much about gman but the gman in hdtf is just strange? i guess, hes definately far more hands on than valve writes him, but also im realizing that gman is far mroe hands on in adrians story, actively helping him (something he doesnt do for gordon and barney is just not even on his radar), so i guess it sorta makes sense that adiran and mitch have theri stories intertwine like they do, might even be a part of the reason that berken tied them together like that since gman play such a pivotla role in mitchs story (i doubt it honestly but we can give him this for funsies)

so assuming were all familiar with the plots of both hdtf and opfor wers gonna start with why ours boys are getting switched

so in hdtf, gman has mitch on standby getting power to that he can be a distraction in the future at some point so gordon has an easier time to do things?? (even tho the point in time hes a distraction is when the combine literally cant get to gordon becuz hes in a week long teleport but whatever) all becuz he said sum funnywords? but also the perpetual prescence of gman in the flashbacks implies that mitch has been a fascination of gmans for quite some time,,,, weird

so what were gonna do is apply that fascination to adiran in the first place as well, and adiran who already did a buncha cool shit (which mitch did not do which makes him lame to gman) is gonna be gmans backup for if gordon needs help in the future (i say if becuz im interpreting gmans time onicience as a 'he can only guess which path this universe is gonna go down', cuz his dialogue about him having to convince his employers that alyx is gonan be worth it, and with hla the him we see is a him from the future ona particular path changing things up on purpose)

but plot twist gman didnt really want him doing all that shit becuz it fucks with his plans so he brings adam back (int he hev suit not for deception purposes but to make sure that he stays alive long enough to adrian who has had no prob killing entire groups of blackops and adam got his ass handed to him already by mitch) to kill adrian with the promise of killing Corporal Shephard (intended to be adrian), but adam ends up killing the shephard he wanted to (mitch) and gmans like fuck damn okay not what i wanted but i guess you did what i asked you to, but anyways next assignment you gotta help the important shephard stay alive, (gman makes mitch deadnt as insurance to make sure adrian stays in line later down the line or whatever, honestly he doesnt need mitch alive but this is what ive got in terms of putting mitch in stasis)

so at this point adrian gets a deal with gman to be allowed to make it out of black mesa becuz hes so poggers its be sad to see a life wasted, hes just gonna owe gman a favor later

so act1 plays out much the same wiht adrian at the helm, he wakes up in the hospital, meets up with nick and is sent on his way to find colonel cue, meets up with adam who has been sent there to make sure adrian doesnt start blabbing to people about what they saw in bm (but also secretly to ensure that adrian hates freeman cuz he would def know what happened to mitch when adrian mentions/ asks after him, and adams gonan for sure lie to cover his ass and be able to do his "job", this causes adrian to say sumthign along the lines of "goddam, sunovabitch i shoulda killed that orange cremesicle lookin ass when i had the chance" thus keeping eveything setting up for the whole name of the game) cuz that was one of gmans concerns about letting adrian go in the first place, which still confuses me cuz lots of people knew stuff in black mesa and got out just fine but also whatever. and from here it really doesnt change at all, adrian eventually ends up captain of the avalon vale, and off they sail

so now act2, also goes p similarly, adrians been on a warpath fucking up combine cuz damn, another overwhelming set of aliens to kill, better get to it, so now hes off teh go fuck up the "weapons" factory up in alaska, turns out its a bunch of slave children making the worlds first cremators all being headed by headdipshit boris. now adrian does not like this, he instead of talking to boris just straight up shoots him, like "fucka you, u suck", takes the kids (including sasha) and proceeds to destroy the entire facility back in line with mitchs descion making.

now act3,,,, is a doozy,,, cuz adrian is a far different man than his brother (frankly they wouldnt even call himself a man, he is nobiney lmao) so when gman shows up and tries to prey on his dislike of freeman for killing mitch to get him to kill freeman, adrian is older and obviously less intent on killing some guy that is not combine, even if he doesnt like the bitch, so gman pulls out the old "well fun fact, i can bring u rbrother back if u kill freeman" (this is valid cuz its int eh same vein as hla ending) so adrian is like ",,,,fine" so he sets off, however he doesnt team up with the combine on this one, cuz he really, really doesnt like the combine and also doesnt have a weird edgelord "well wed do the same thing as them if we could" thing going on that i guess would lend him to being willing to team up with them like mitch does

so now adrians off to kill freeman, but this time teams up with the resistance to get a chance at getting close to gordon, by earnign thier trust, cuz chances are if theyve been killing combine for 20 years, theyre gonna hve come in contact witht hem at some point, this also functions as bolstering the reisitances numbers, helping meet the distract the combine from gordon quota that adrians is meant to serve, to do this he eventually gets sent to bmeast to meet up with eli to discuss numbers and shit or whatever, which places him near gordon but is just a near miss as they arrive right around the time of the combines raid, so adirans gets a chance in the confusion to go after gordon without looking sus and immediatley being blamed for killing gordon.

this sets off a similar chain of events to og hdtf, goes thru ravenholm, galavants across the countryside, gets to those rebel outposts or whatever and gets info under the guise of helping gordon so they tell him where to go, eventually makes his way to nova prospekt, is too late to get to gordon but is there fast enough to kill neoguh combine to ensure gordon adn alyx can get into the teleporter (ie making gordons way easier), so now hes gotta fight his way out, still ends up washing out into the ocean, but instead of being captured by rebels hes saved by them, he wakes up in that prison theyre holed up in, and goes to send a message to adam and nick cuz he misses his besties (adrian does not end up making it a polycule, but adam and nick still date) and wants to meet up with them again to regroup cuz adrian is fucked up to the most after all of that. (i am not having gman show up to plot explain shit to adrian cuz i think thats stupid)

now at this point adam is looking at adrian and is like, damn this is all my fault that hes gone on this suicide mission to kill a guy who didnt even do the crime, and this time round adam is going to be the bigger man and say "hey man, i was the one who killed ur brother, u dont gotta be fighting two wars at once" this causes adrian to just fucking loose it honestly, damn near kills adam but thankfully nick is there to buffer, and once seperated adrian just sobs, and this time adam and adrian get to talk shit out, adam also kinda says that he saw gman take mitchs body so he might still have him somewhere, so now were like wait shid is mitch still somewhere, this eventually si confirmed by the vortigaunts who can see that oh yeah these bitches have been fucked with by gman also ur brothers alive and gmans got him in his clutches

so since adrian technically did his job gmans not gonna come after him all that much, specially since adrians gonna continue to fight with the resistance to help freeman so hes doing overtime at this point

so eventually he still goes to borealis, but this time in a timely manner since he finds out about it thru the resistance, using the avalon vale, but also with an ulterior motive to a) kill that sunuvabitch gman and b) get mitch back adn thats the end of the game !

honestly, it would make more sense to not have gman force adrian to kill freeman but i decided to keep it that way so that its still hdtf, but honestly, it seems more likely with adrian there that gman would tell adrian to go help out the resistance, but we can write that option off as gman being a messy bitch lmao

RWBY v9 E5 Thoughts & Analysis

The ever after gets prettier and prettier

No one complain about the visuals of the JL crossovers, because this is what we got with resources that could have gone to those

“when we break, or wear out, or simply finish what we were made to do, We’re called back. But Herb? His heart was too weak to listen. So i gave him a little bit of mine.”

So Herb was already being called back, presumably because he was “worn out” and trying to force change instead of just help people on their journey, but he just wasn’t able to listen to said call. Intriguing.

So when you ascend, you become the person you wanted to be when you were your old self, but you don’t remember any of what or who you were prior to the change.

Also intriguing that Ruby specifically asks if you keep your memories post-ascension. Are you considering something you want to share with the class, Ruby?

Love how this volume has clearly gotten the CRWBY to reflect on what they’ve been writing as well, as we’ve seen through the cat a la “exposition is terribly boring”. They’re really thinking about the nature of stories and how to tell them meaningfully.

I am so intrigued by the Blacksmith. Her design is fascinating. And, uh....as far as we know, she wasn’t in the book.

So lets get this out of the way--no, Penny’s not coming back. Stop it. There’s two ways i think the meaning of this line could play out

1) Ruby is tempted to ascend and “become” someone she think is more worthy of living than she is

2) People live on in the ways we carry them and everything we learned from them with us

currently, i’m on the “The Blacksmith is an Ascended Summer Rose” theory train, but then i was also dead wrong about the Rusted Knight--we’ll get there

She’s forging/smithing/whatever a butterfly something or other....wonder what that’s for. Other than symbolism, obviously

Little: ”Ruby, I don’t think we’re supposed to be here.” Everything about the blacksmith is framed as an almost unnatural addition to the Ever After--including CC seemingly not knowing about her.

“I’m fine. I can handle it” Ugh, Ruby, you poor girl

“If you change your mind, you can choose any one of these you like, and set your burden down.”

“They’re an extension of ourselves, they’re a part of us!”--Ruby, v1 about why she loves weapons

So, Crescent Rose is....perhaps, Ruby’s identity as a huntress?

Crescent rose is lost, that part of her is lost.

I dunno exactly, we’ll see. But I’m positive that volume 1 line is at the core of everything we have seen concerning Crescent Rose this volume.

Penny’s sword. Alyx’s dagger. And of course, the one that broke the FNDM--Summer’s axe.

Ever since Ruby and Salem confronted each other in volume 8, the silver eyes and Summer bring a sense of foreboding with them. They have changed completely from their heroic implications of volume 6.

What knowledge did you give her, Jinn?

The cat knocking things off the table casually is another great cat-based gag.

“It carries a mothers promise” this line has the potential to become one of the most heartbreaking things in the entire show.

Especially because in the Tuesday BtS video we got the line “a mother always fulfills her promise” from the cast and crew. Something absolutely soul crushing concerning Summer is on its way.

It is so like Ruby to put others first this way. People were in danger, her friends needed to return to normal to help, she knows how the barter system works in the Ever After, she gives her mothers emblem up without hesitation knowing its value will be enough.

It’s definitely weird to give Blake the line “whats a jabberwalker?” Weiss or Yang, sure. But Blake asking is weird. She is the most knowledgeable of the Ever After, she even knew about the Jabberwalker previously, right? Weird.

“If the jabberwalker eats us, we do not ascend” So it can essentially cut reincarnation short? Or maybe kill functionally immortal creatures? Seems like this could be interesting groundwork for the future...

The Rusted Knight! Blake fangirling over a fictional childhood hero come to life is just so wholesome.

Neo has officially moved beyond illusions. She can create tangible, seemingly even sentient replicas of existing, living things. So that’s not troubling at all. Course....do they have free will, or do they have to listen to Neo Prime? I guess we will learn soon enough.

‘We’ll hold them off”?! God i hope CC and thh bird guy are okay...

Yes, I think he aged normally, we already know theres time shenaniganery in the Ever After.

No, i don’t think he will return to his pre-Ever After age, RWBY doesn’t reverse big status quo shifts. It just doesn’t.

Also adding to Penny not coming back--If Penny could come back, Jaune would have done it already.

So yeah. Also--

just the whole fact that there is a place in the world of RWBY where death doesn’t really exist when our main villain is literally incapable of dying, feels way too coincidental for my theory/analysis senses to ignore

Just the fact that the ever after has two ways of an otherwise immortal life ending—one through choosing to become someone and something else entirely, or the other to be taken by a creature that is the only thing that can “kill” in this world, feels very important when dealing with an immortal villain

Stopping Salem will come from something they learn in the Ever After, that’s clear as day Even if they don’t realize it for a few volumes

Or maybe that will be the moment Ruby finds hope again--when she realizes that something in the ever after can help her defeat Salem

Gordon & Alyx for character opinion :]

YESSSS ok gordon first

he has very little in terms of how he should “canonically” be characterized so i think it’s very difficult to actually be “wrong” about how you see him, but i also see him in a very particular way and don’t personally enjoy interpretations that veer super far from my own, even if they’re equally valid. i like to see him as a nice, kind of silly guy thrust into a fucked-up situation and forced to become a symbol he never wanted to be. it is interesting to me!

and while i base some of this on hints presented in canon (see: gordon kind of just being Some Scientist, the silly stories about him racing through vents or breaking beakers), other stuff can come from how i play him in my games.

ALYX MY ABSOLUTE BELOVED. i truly don’t think i’ve ever been more romantically in love with a fictional character and you saw this firsthand. she is just...aoguguh i love her so much!! i was worried i wouldn’t because i wasn’t sure how well she would be written, but she’s really great. i’m no authority on her character (i’ll have to replay the games before i can be snobby about how she’s characterized), but i love her and i think there’s a lot to her character that could still be explored (her childhood growing up with only vague memories and stories of a normal world, her memories of her mother, her trauma after her father died-- wait that got retconned for no reason).

i think fandom is so fucking weird about her. she’s an adult woman who gets treated like a child no matter how capable and literally an adult she is. she’s the deuteragonist of half-life 2 and the protagonist of her own game, and people still ignore her because...idk, barney is a handsome white man, i guess. i’m sorry, as much as i like the guy, she has so much more character and is so much more interesting and central to the series and yet doesn’t get a fraction of the attention he gets because fans are incapable of caring about anything else except shipping two white men together. (and when fans are including her, she’s either the sassy lesbian sidekick to their relationship or her existing father is replaced by her two white male peers because fans are fucking insane and weird.)

that got rant-y but...it has to be said!! care about alyx or feel my wrath!! she is arguably the best, most fleshed-out character in the series but she’s a woman of color so people don’t give a shit about her. once i replay the games it’s over for y’all, i will be writing essays worth of analyses about her character.
