(I have received questions before about whether or not Vil and Floyd have a unique relationship of some kind since—besides Azul and Jade—Vil is the only character Floyd refers to by names outside of his own sea-life-naming-convention.
But he doesn’t!
Unlike Rook (who shifts between using French/Japanese/English with his nicknames and sometimes drops them completely) Floyd is strict about his names: he never uses any name with anyone besides the sea-creature name he decides for them, except for Azul and Jade. The game emphasizes this with Floyd’s “Azul’s Azul” line, so it is interesting that NA's continuity for Floyd is so flexible.)

Ruggie sees Yuu as a little house-pet, and we, as a Fandom, do not talk enough about that!
He compares Yuu to an excitable puppy, and he calls them a kitty in his dorm room summon. Like forget about the shrimpy nickname for a second, I want people to start making Kitten Yuu instead of shrimp yuu! We are Ruggie's little pet, and I will be the person to make kitten yuu if not one else will.

Also, Floyd is a teensy bit OOC for this, but there is a reason for it, so please bear with me.
...three years, four months, seven days, two hours, thirty minutes, five seconds ago.
That's when Floyd broke up with you.
You don't know why. You can't possibly understand why. You were perfect for him, you still are!
Let's count the reasons you're perfect for him, shall we?
You love him (obviously!!)
You're able to tolerate his... behaviors.
You help him appear less threatening.
You helped him get his grades to be more consistent.
You helped him with those pesky mood swings.
You love him (again)
You love him (one more time, just to emphasize)
You love him.
You love him, and yet... he abandoned you.
He said you weren't worth his time anymore. He said you were... bad for him.
And just like that, after the two of you being together for so long... he just broke up with you.
...three years, four months, seven days, two hours, thirty-one minutes, ten seconds ago.
You've been keeping track of him ever since.
You just want to make sure he's doing alright, that's all, nothing more!
Recently... he's been... seeing someone.

Even if he's with someone else now, you know deep down he still loves you... and he always will, because you're perfect for him.
You're the perfect match for him and you always will be. Hell, you even chose to never return to your home, because you loved him just that much. Doesn't that show how eternally devoted you are to him? How much you love him?
Why can't he see that?

No matter.
He will, soon.
He'll realize soon, that the two of you are meant to be together, forever and always.
All you need to do is pull a few little strings... a few things to set him off like always... and just like that, his new partner will see the ugly side of him. Yelling and fighting... screaming and crying... a storm of emotions nobody in their right mind would want to stay with... nobody except you, of course, because you taught him how to behave himself.
Wait... why haven't they broken up yet...?
That person he's with, did they not fully comprehend what was happening? Do they think that's okay?
Ugh. Regardless of why this new partner of his isn't getting themselves the hell out of that relationship they aren't supposed to be in, the point still stands that you must now take desperate measures. It's the only option!
And that's why you are where you are right now... standing at his back door, covered in blood.
"Shrimpy-?! What are you doing here, why are you covered in blood-?!" He's uncharacteristically freaked out... ah, adorable as always.
"Take me back. You know we're perfect for each other." You tell him the truth. You're the only person good enough for him.
"We broke up three years ago-"
"Three years, four months, nine days, five hours, seven minutes, two seconds ago."
"...creep." He looks... disgusted. "You still haven't told me why you're covered in blood."
"I got rid of what was in the way, that's all."
He seems to get the hint.
"Get the hell off my property and never show your face to me again, Shrimpy."
"You're still calling me that nickname... doesn't that mean, in some way, you still love me-?"
"No, I do that for everyone. It means nothing, and you're delusional to think it ever did."
"But I know there's another name you used to call me, remember? The one I taught you about... the special nickname, just for me..." You laugh to yourself. "I heard you still call me that."
"I-!" He seems a bit freaked out. "That... that doesn't mean anything..." He's always so careful around you, because he knows what you'll do if he isn't... it's cute how scared he is of you, a human.
"Admit it: you still love me, like how I still love you."
"No, I'm not goi-"
"Say it now or you know what will happen."
"...okay... fine... maybe..."
"No, I want to hear you say the words exactly."
He hesitates for a moment.
"...I... still love you, Shrimpy."
"And?"
"And... I'll take you back, and we can... be together... forever."
"That's just what I wanted to hear. Good eel."
And just like that, your life returned to the perfect way it was before...
And Floyd will never slip through your grasp again.

Floyd and Rook's nicknames
So I was thinking about why our character in Twisted Wonderland has the nicknames of "Shrimp/Koebi-chan" and "Trickster" and I haven't seen anyone point out the obvious reason: It's because we're tied to Mickey.
Floyd's is pretty clear. Mickey's small stature is often pointed out by whoever is his rival, like Mortimer Mouse or Pete, and "Shrimp" is a nickname used for someone small. However, Rook's is a nod to Mickey from the late 20s-early 30s.
If you haven't done deep dive into the beginnings of Disney's Mickey Mouse cartoons, Mickey was more of a trickster character when he was first animated. He was cited in the early 1930s by writers of the time as "scandalous" and an "imp". He was about getting ahead in life and finding the fastest way that served him what he wanted. An example, in one of his cartoons from 1928, "Plane Crazy", Mickey flat out yanks a turkey's tail off just so he has a tail fin for his plane. No asking, no speaking, just sees the tail and TAKES it, ignoring the pain and embarrassment the turkey goes through because of his actions. Later in the same cartoon, while flying his plane, he asks Minnie for a kiss, she says no, so he pulls a series of scary plane maneuvers to try and get her to kiss him when he asks a second time. She says no AGAIN and he forcibly kisses her. Don't worry, he does get comeuppance for this, but comparing the image of Mickey we have now to his old self; there's a lot of cognitive dissonance.
Honestly, Mickey in his original conception before they started to change his character would fit more with the student body of Night Raven College rather than the student body of Royal Sword Academy. Late 1920s Mickey is selfish, mischievous, a bit of a jerk, and all about his wants first. It wasn't till a few short years later they started shifting his character to be more like Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp character and lessening Mickey's more jerk behavior. Then, as time went on, he went from being like Chaplin's character to become more of an everyman archetype which is one of the roles we play as in game.
Considering that basis of the nicknames, I wonder if that's part of why we were picked up by the Carriage, but the Dark Mirror can't classify us. The cartoon that Twisted Wonderland (and Epic Mickey as well) references is "Thru the Mirror" which aired in 1936, which is a couple years into that start of his becoming more like a "Little Tramp" based character of being childlike and bumbling, but good hearted at the core. In short, we're tied to Mickey who, at the time of "Thru the Mirror" was in character shift, going from a character who would definitely fit in at NRC, to a more good-hearted character who may mess up, but doesn't really act like a villain at all.
Now this isn't to say we are Mickey, obviously Mickey is in the game and Yana Toboso has made it perfectly clear that all Yuus are valid as 'Yuu' is supposed to be whoever the player wants them to be. I mean, personally speaking, my character is NEVER going to change from what I set her up to be (WHICH IS DEFINITELY NOT MICKEY). I want to keep her the way she is and I have no reasons to change her (I plan to post about her in depth one of these days when I finally have time to get the art for her done and where I'm happy enough with it). I just find it interesting that our nicknames seem to be nods to our connection to Mickey Mouse.

"What Nicknames Do They Have?"

Figured maybe doing a series of posts like this would help friends and mutuals get to know my OCs better!
Part 1: What Are They Twisted From? | Part 3: Copper's Backstory
While this will pertain to Floyd's and Rook's nicknaming conventions, there's also going to be a second part to this that will be a separate post for additional nicknames from other characters, both canon and others' OCs that have formed a significant relationship with my characters! That'll come later tho.
Copper Benoit:
"Sea Dog" (Floyd) - Initially, since Copper's origin and heritage are rather unknown until later plot developments, Floyd picked this nickname because the wind magic Copper utilizes often has a salty sea tang to it, and because there's a certain irony to it, given Copper has grown up under captivity in a bayou and cannot swim. When it's later revealed he's descended from a legendary pirate captain, Floyd feels vindicated and doubles down on the nickname.
"Petit Brigand | Roi des Brigands" (Rook) - when Copper first visits NRC, Rook pretty quickly clocks that the boy's got no small skill as a thief at the behest of his master forcing Copper to become one. Copper is understandably freaked out when he hears Rook call him "little robber" (how did he figure that out, Copper has looked for every excuse to not actually follow Mr. Stone's demands) and Rook reads him like an open book. When Copper's heritage is revealed, Rook delightedly changes the nickname on impulse.
Mr. Stone and Mr. Lurk:
"Rockfish and Chromium" (Floyd) - according to him, they're placeholder names. Hey, they can't all be perfect right away! However, as time goes on, he sticks with these nicknames for them, deeming both men not worthy of the effort.
Likewise, Rook doesn't believe either of them worth the effort or honor of nicknames.
(Floyd does nickname Augustus and Octavian "the Allibros", just a little portmanteau of "alligator brothers", and it's entirely possible that they might each get individual nicknames in the future if he gets to play with the alligators more after Copper officially keeps them. Same goes for Rook, he's more likely to refer to them with nicknames after Copper makes it clear he's keeping the alligators around in order to free them from Mr. Stone's abusive ownership.)
Wei Renqiao:
"Orca" (Floyd) - people assume that due to WRQ's size and intimidating stature but seemingly amicable nature that this is why Floyd chose the nickname. Sure, that can apply, but early on in their freshman year, Floyd overhead WRQ talking with Riddle about his culture, and the fact that his people used to be nomadic and the way they trace their heritage is matrilineal. This made Floyd say "oh, so like an orca pod" and he's called WRQ "Orca" ever since.
"Grand Génie" (Rook) - credit has to go to my close friend @inmateofthemind for coming up with this one, as a respectful title Rook would use for WRQ. (iirc it means "great genius", though I'm sure it would take a hot second for anyone to puzzle that out)
Wei Xinyi:
"Ribbon Eel" (Floyd) - picked on a whim when hearing WRQ talking about his cousin being genderfluid. Turns out it fits better than Floyd expected when he first sees Wei Xinyi and realizes they're definitely as colorful as a ribbon eel too.
"Monsieur beauté mortelle" (Rook) - Listen. Wei Xinyi is an extremely, breathtakingly beautiful person. Like preternaturally beautiful, and people are often left speechless when they first see him. Rook was no exception and decided to pick a nickname accordingly.
Wei Gang:
"King Salmon" (Floyd)
"Monsieur tradition culturelle" (Rook)
Still working on figuring out how to explain the Watsonian explanation for these ones, as I'm being a little picky; I'll update later as needed.
Chrysanthos Shroud:
"Axolotl" (Floyd) - Chrys makes quite a stark impression when the Octotrio first meets him, but that hardly means that Floyd doesn't take notice of Chrys's limp after he leaves with a flourish. Floyd figures it could be either the result of an old injury that never healed correctly or the sign of an artificial limb. When he later learns the latter guess was correct and Chrys has a prosthetic leg, Floyd delightedly equates him to an axolotl and thus the nickname sticks.
Rook currently has no set nickname for Chrys! He tries to pick one a few different times, though Chrys gently shoots down a number of them with reasonable explanations as to why they might best fit others. The big thing however, is that Rook also winds up getting one of Chrysanthos's lectures and reads where Chrys points out Rook's weaknesses and shortcomings, and tries to offer some advice on what Rook can do to improve. Unlike most other students, who usually take Chrys's call-outs as an attack, Rook appreciates hearing the truth laid out to him, even if it does sting with that delivery. As such, this actually earns Chrys a lot of respect from Rook, so he is undecided on what to actually nickname him as a result (the nickname must be a perfect fit!) so for now, he just calls him "Monsieur Shroud".

I FORGOT I WROTE THIS LIKE 2 MONTHS AGO BYE
Floyd pouts. “If you keep crying like that, it’s gonna make me miserable too, and I’m gonna haveta squeeze you.”
Yu freezes, still watery-eyed and a little shaky, when Floyd rises from his slouched kneel against the bed’s edge to stand up and loom over him. What’s he gonna do? What does he mean by that? Does he seriously hate me? Will he—
His panic is quickly popped like a bubble when Floyd unexpectedly places a knee on the cot and leans down to hug him; tight and reassuring but somehow not aggravating any of his injuries.
“Just kidding~” Floyd sing-songs into Yu’s hair. “Koi—you’re too cute and fun to squeeze too hard.”
…Yu feels it reverberating, with his face buried in Floyd’s chest, when the eel mumbles, “You’d better not die on me, Yu. It’d suck a lot.”

"Yuu-Yuu hurt." Part 2
Part 1 | Part 3
The teddy bear finds Malleus in the greenhouse with Jade, a rock sitting on the table with mushrooms growing on the surface. Malleus pauses in the middle of his explanation upon spotting it. "Oh, hello, [teddy's name]. What brings you here?"
"[Teddy's name] needs help. Yuu-Yuu feel bad," it says.
Malleus frowns. "What seems to be troubling them?"
"[Teddy's name] doesn't know." The answer astonishes Malleus and Jade, but the matter is put aside to come up with a way to cheer Yuu up.
"Ah, Malleus, do you remember the mushrooms you showed me at our last meeting?"
"The ones that can improve one's mood if properly prepared? Of course."
"Would you be able to show me how to prepare them? They may make a great gift for Yuu, and I have a recipe in mind that the mushrooms may go well with."
Later that night, Yuu is gifted with a delicious plate of mushroom pasta.

Floyd is on bar shift at the Mostro Lounge. He's pleasantly surprised to see the teddy bear, which is standing on the counter since the stool is too low for it to see him properly. He stares quizzically at the teddy bear when it tells him about Yuu.
"Jade said that you came to him and sea slug-senpai about the same thing. I seriously don't get what you're worried about. Little shrimpy was more bubbly than usual when I saw them."
The teddy bear puts a paw on its muzzle, thinking.
"Go see Azul about this. I don't feel like deciphering anything right now."

Azul is puzzled at the teddy bear's words, having seen Yuu earlier that day too. But the teddy bear doesn't leave empty handed.
"Give this to them. They'll know what to do," Azul says, handing a folded slip of paper. "By the way, would you happen to be available this Saturday?"

"First mushroom pasta from Tsunotarou and Jade, and now a therapist recommendation from Azul," Yuu says, staring down at Azul's pretty penmanship. They look over at their teddy bear, who is sitting next to them on the couch, and gives a small smile. "You don't have to do all this, you know. I'm not going through anything bad, and if I was, I would tell someone about it. You know that."
The teddy bears nods, but then waddles over and hugs them. They hug it back. "Thanks, [teddy's name]."
"Did it get someone to give you something again?" Grim had entered the room. He perks up at a thought and hurries over. "Is it food?" he asks excitedly, jumping onto the couch.
"Nope, not this time. Just a recommendation for a therapist."
"Huh?!" He leans forward to look at the teddy bear. "Are you still on about Yuu being hurt? I'm pretty sure with all the attention they're getting, they'd be cheered up already."
"[Teddy's name] trying to help."
Grim sighs. "Who knew you were so stubborn? Buuuuuut, if you're still worrying about them, why don't you ask Trey or Jamil to make something for them? Maybe something with tuna--"
"Grim, no!"

"They feel bad, but they're not regretful of anything nor are upset," Vil quietly says to himself. He sighs. "I'm afraid I may not be able to help with something like this. Although, it does worry me that Yuu is keeping something well hidden from you and Grim."
"Could it be that they exude a bad presence?" Rook suggests. "You, little protector, are sensitive to Trickster's emotions as well as others' emotions. You do not hesitate to put a comforting paw on a sad student's hand or leg or hug Trickster when something is bothering them. You also have the peculiar ability of knowing Trickster's physical well-being and come running to them when they get injured."
Rook smiles when the teddy bear's eyes glimmer with hope (in his eyes, at least). "By these observations, it would make sense for you to also be sensitive to the atmosphere surrounding them. Would that be correct?"
"YES!" The teddy bear nods fervently.
"Careful! You're going to fall over," Vil says, reaching out a hand to steady the teddy bear.

"A bad presence surrounding them. . ." Lilia had paused in his search for something that had fallen under his bed.
He sits up and looks around the room. "Hmm. . . Sebek mentioned that you had been going around campus asking for help on cheering up Yuu, but it seems you found the real reason. I may have the solution for your problem. Just give me some time to get everything prepared."

"Scan complete. There's no physical distress or imbalance in their system," Ortho reports.
"I cannot believe that after getting Lilia's help, it still thinks there's a problem," Sebek remarks, shaking his head. "Has it no faith in him?"
"I don't think that's the case. I'm just surprised that this has been going on for three weeks," Jack says.
Yuu shrugs helplessly. "Well, it's just worried about my well-being. I'm sure that after Ortho tells it I'm fine, it will relax."
". . . Somehow, I doubt that."
"My scans are almost always accurate, though. Idia makes sure my equipment is up to date and I'd know if something is wrong with any of them," Ortho says.
"Erm, sorry, I didn't mean it that way. It's just. . ."
It is then that Kalim and Jamil approach the group, giving a greeting. "You guys seem a little distressed. Is everything all right?" Kalim then asks.
"My teddy bear has been trying to get everyone to cheer me up or help me even though I'm not sad or hurt," Yuu explains.
"Grim did come up to me the other day asking for food to cheer you up. I guess he wasn't lying," Jamil says.
"He did what?! Dang it, I told him no." Yuu huffs. "Anyway, it's recently been thinking that I have a bad presence, so it got Lilia to do a ritual. We just had Ortho do a scan on me, and I think it should calm down after hearing that I'm healthy."
"What about your aura? Those aren't connected to anything physical, and I know someone who specializes in aura detection and healing," Kalim offers.
"I tried scanning for that too, but nothing's come up," Ortho says. "It's the same for curses and other magical debuffs. There's nothing."
"That's strange."
"Perhaps not. It might mean that Lilia's ritual has been effective after all," Sebek boasts.
"I can understand it being protective over you, but there's no reason for you to be targeted for anything. You're as ordinary as they come, if you overlook being from another world," Jamil says.
"Thanks. I really hope it calms down after this. I don't want it to trouble other people," Yuu says.

"Mario Kart? And is there a person who doesn't like it? Though I have to admit, the game got a bit boring after a while, it's hard to enjoy something you basically mastered, I feel like there's no challenge in the game for me anymore. That said, I would play with you anytime, little bud, I just don't garantee a revenge, we both know I'm gonna win. Now, if I like board games? Yes, I do, I played a lot of board games with both Idia and Ortho when we were younger and I sometimes go to the Board Game Club to play with Idia and Acotinum (a poisonous flower, her nickname for Azul)."
