MadeWest + Firestone Walker Short-Lived Series IPA (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 3 of 4. Tropical and stone fruit hop notes dominate the nose, and the body is a bit thin and lighter given this is a cold IPA. Nice bright hop nose and an easy-drinking beer that finishes clean.

A blend of six unique barrel-aged beers, Firestone Walker Brewing releases XXVI.
Press Release
Robles, CA: Firestone Walker today unveiled “XXVI”—the latest edition of its storied Anniversary Ale, blended once again with the help of local winemakers.
“We’re talking about a ‘who’s who’ of Paso Robles winemakers,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “We’re fortunate to call them our neighbors and friends, and they never disappoint when it comes to our annual blending session.”
The result this year is XXVI—a masterwork of flavor and complexity, blended from six distinct ales aged in bourbon and brandy barrels, marking the brewery’s 26th anniversary.
“This latest Anniversary Ale is just super delicious and refined,” Brynildson said. “It’s driven by two barrel-aged stouts, but it’s much more than that. It has this perfect balancing point with a lot of spirits barrel character, and there’s an underlying freshness that elevates the mouthfeel.”
XXVI is rolling out now in limited quantities to all Firestone Walker markets, and is available at each brewery location and online at FirestoneBeer.com for a limited time.
An Annual Rite
Firestone Walker’s collaboration with local winemakers dates back to 2006, when Brynildson was tasked with creating the inaugural Anniversary Ale to mark the brewery’s 10th anniversary year.
“It’s a tall order to blend all of these distinct beers into a harmonious whole,” Brynildson said. “That’s why we bring in the winemakers—they are practicing experts in the art of blending.”
This year’s blending session marked the 17th occasion of this annual summer rite. As always, the winemakers broke into teams to create their own candidate blends from a variety of barrel-aged components. “We offered up a perfect spectrum of beers to choose from: a light and a heavy stout, an imperial brown ale, a golden ale and two styles of barley wines,” Brynildson said.
Next, the winemakers and brewers blind tasted all of the candidate blends, then voted as a group to crown the winner that would become XXVI.
XXVI: The Final Blend
“It was nice to have our classic Bravo brown ale back in the mix as a complement to our Parabola and Velvet Merkin stouts,” Brynildson said. “Heavy Things contributed a subtle dimension of brandy barrel character. Finally, Helldorado and Wheat Wine added a splash of freshness to the beer.”

Firestone Walker + Alvarado Street No Vacancy West Coast IPA (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 3 of 4. Lots of bright tropical fruit, mostly pineapple, and some nice resinous and herbal qualities in the body. Lighter body and really pungent hops -- nice balance.

A last few thoughts on our trip to California.
Southwest Airlines provided flawless service for our four flights. After reading many accounts of poor behavior, mostly by fliers but also airline personnel, I was pleased to witness nothing but courteous service by staff and kind behavior by fellow passengers. The flight attendants were especially welcoming and in good humor. All flights were on time and I got exit row seats for every leg...lol.
California dreaming is something I totally get, even after being there for only a week. To my surprise, D wasn't as enamored with it as I was. It was serendipitous we and Hurricane Hillary coincided there as the temps we experienced in SoCal were cooler than normal. For us, it brought one evening of steady rain and...said lower temps. I found Rancho Cucamonga (delightfully cooky name) to be lovely.
We had a day at Venice Beach, also lovely. There we witnessed more illegal drug use in a few hours than we'd normally see in a year. Still, there was nothing menacing about it. The human condition in the best of settings I suppose. I had the muscles at the Ale House there and they were not good. Lol the bread was fantastic though and the broth was tasty. An hour later I was drinking at the famous Firestone Walker Brewery and everything was fine.
After, we experienced an hour and a half of the storied LA traffic to get to Macleod Ale Brewing in Highland Park. With 4 cask conditioned ales on it was OUTSTANDING! I yearn for it now.
Throughout I was constantly in wonder at the sublime flora of SoCal. The trees and flowers were strange and precisely exquisite. Most everyone I encountered was friendly...except the woman overseeing the self-checkout at Ralph's. Truely she was New York nasty! Lol
The food?...was fine. Our trip wasn't aimed to be a foodie endeavor. I twice had interesting Mexican food but nothing remarkable. Had a good tri-tip sandwich heaped with tender slices of steak, chilli relleno, tacos del buche, regretable mussels, and sundry other tacos. One tasty burger and perfect onion rings at the side of a picturesque river but we never got to In-N-Out or any other fast food restaurant.
I found amazing sour beer and drank a bunch of West Coast IPA's. Oddly, I drank the east coast's most famous IPA, "Heady Topper" for the first time as well. Before traveling to California, I was talking to a bartender in Louisville, who was from the west coast, and she said west coast IPAs tasted different on the west coast. I asked why she thought that might be and she said it was likely the water. I drank at least 10 different west coast IPAs on my visit and I think they tasted like they taste everywhere else -anyway.
The night before Sequoia, we rented a home at the town of Three Rivers (Rosie called it our mountain house) near the southern entry to Sequoia National Park and TBH I think the views and surroundings there were my favorite of the whole trip. I wish we'd booked more time there.
The best constant of our trip was our granddaughter. She is very bright, funny, and more than a little head strong. I'm glad she is experiencing SoCal and can't wait until she's back here.

Gambling Addiction (Leanna Firestone) - i’m so insane bonkers crazy for this song ITS SO GOOD GO LISTEN TO ALL OF LEANNAS MUSIC anyways. how marinette falls quite literally head over heels when she’s in love! but she ultimately feels like she’s always playing a losing game! I just am so obsessed with the vibe and tone, how deep and echoey it is, but with the intermittent hollers! it gives a very specific feeling, I love it. “And it’s poison in his blood. Big fire, big burn, into the ashes and no return” just like a perfect reference to everyone being turned into literal ash! it works so well with the chaotic, destructive nature of blanc.

DICTATOR (REI AMI) - i think the general vibe of the song is so fitting for her! especially the really direct transition to a much softer and emotional tune/lyrics! RAAAA it’s just so telling of how she makes shadybug into this terrifying powerful figure that can and will hurt anyone in her way when she’s just marinette, this lonely teenager with one too many problems and a shitty/dangerous coping mechanism! “I am not your queen, i’m your dictator. bend the fucking knee, yeah bitch, that was an order! what you say to me, huh? bitch speak louder! you know i reign supreme” it’s just screams shadybug to me. also hehehehe reign supreme get it

I Love You Too (Peter McPoland) - i’m a sucker for this man’s music he makes some bangers but yeah this song it just screams adrinette to me. especially post season five, seeing them get to explore starting a relationship together and navigate their own love!! also just really shows how devoted adrien is to loving marinette, how he holds her to no expectations, values her comfort and happiness above all else during their interactions LIKE GOD HE LOVES HER SO MUCH HES WILLING TO SIT AND WAIT AND LOVE HER IN SILENCE UNTIL SHES READY FOR IT TO BE AS LOUD AS IT FEELS!!
