in Secret LGBT Worm In My Head, where regent is bisexual (real) instead of bisexual when he’s having fucked up evil sex and straight the rest of the time, there’s at least one interesting scene doing something with how brian is a boy who does not want to be like his father but is still obsessed w/ masculinity as a method of strength and self-protection to the point where it becomes toxic, whereas alec is also a boy who does not want to be like his father but is uninterested in masculinity to the point of receiving homophobia for it. similar to how taylor furiously sections alec off as some form of Evil Sociopath in her mind so she doesn’t have to acknowledge the ways in which they’re similar & confront some of her own cognitive dissonance, i think it would be funny to explore what the only other boy on the team being a guy who wears frilly little lacey clothing and refuses to work out and is Not afraid to get melodramatic and sillay would do to brian’s brain. very fun how they both want to be Stronger and Better than their father figures but alec is just exceedingly lazy about and/or wholly uninterested in almost everything brian perceives as strength. i want to watch them have a mildly philosophical conversation over video games where both of them are thinking “hmm this dude is kind of insane” about each other

Something I wish was touched on more in the books:
Vakama's mathematics skills. We know all Ta-Matoran are mathematicians, which they needs to be so they get the right angles and measurements for masks, and we know math for them is like a second language
Imagine if, while the Toa Metru are in the archives due to the flood, someone asks how big the archives really are. Whenua says they span across Onu-Metru, mostly, but there are some linked to other Metrus. When asked about the size in miles, EVERYONE is shocked to hear Whenua AND Vakama answer, the two also surprising each other because they get the same answer. Whenua asks how Vakama knows and Vakama admits he just estimated how long the tunnel they were in was, then estimated the size of Onu-Metru and some other Metrus like Ga-Metru and even the Coliseum, and then converted the feet into miles. Everyone has their reactions. Onewa is quietly impressed and annoyed at having a sometimes genius on his team, Matau thinks Vakama is a nerd but is trying not to fall head over heels, Nokama and Nuju are impressed, and Whenua has some more respect for Vakama
Imagine Matau, Nokama, and Vakama seeing the squad of Vahki in Po-Metru and when Matau says there are hundreds, Vakama murmurs that it's actually just two hundred and fifteen. Cue some, "For real? Right now?" Eyesnfrom Matau and Nokama before Vakama gives his plan for how they get past them
Imagine if, during the Hordika arc, in the way Bomonga uses the archives and the knowledge of them to help Whenua not give in to his urges, Norik does a similar thing by wondering what angles the rafters are on from where he and Vakama are standing. Vakama, knee deep in his pain and despair, doesn't want to indulge the Rahaga's "nonsense," but Norik plays coy and half-lies that he's a little rusty on his math and just wants to see if his guess is a good one. Vakama relents and gives the angle as they walk. Rinse and repeat with Vakama growing more reluctant to partake in Norik's game, but Norik ultimately reveals that he's only doing it because he knows it'll help them both; rather than stewing in something emotional and digging a hole that can't be climbed out of, focusing on something more cognitive like the mathematics that comes so easily to Ta-Matoran and Ta-Metru locals will help Vakama focus because he will not be able to save anyone, let alone himself, if he's mulling over what's happened to him and what he did to cause it. After a while of more walking, Vakama, seeing Norik stop by a statue, asks NORIK if he knows the height of the statue, getting petty because he suspects Norik was possibly BS-ing and genuinely curious to see what Norik still knows, and Norik admits he has an estimate, and that's based off of how tall a Toa is and how many of a single Toa it would take to be as tall as the statue. When Norik gives his answer, he asks Vakama about his method of estimating and how it compares. Vakama, not to gloat, uses a similar method, but it's based on how tall a Matoran is and how many Matoran heigh it is. Regardless, the two get a similar answer, as Vakama "swotches" to Norik's method and gets an answer close to what Norik had. It's Norik's turn to try and not gloat, as he asks Vakama how he feels, now that he's more or less been distracted. Vakama, realizing he got played, begrudgingly admits he does feel a little bit better, but doesn't appreciate being tricked. Norik only tells him that he didn't really trick Vakama, just gave him a tool to help him, if he needs it
Imagine, while he sees the horde of visorak, Sidorak gives the number of roughly a thousand, but when his back is turned, Vakama says there's actually MORE than a thousand, much to the surprise of Roodaka. He doesn't give his reason for how he knows, only saying he just does
Idk, I just love the idea of Vakama being so attuned with math, mainly because I hate math🤣

Wesker Tormenting A New Survivor! HCs
Tumblr media
It's too bad that nobody taught you, the new survivor, not to make a fool of Albert Wesker. It looks like he'll have to teach you himself.
A/N; every day y'all become more and more psychic. bc this was sitting in my drafts and @vasani was like 'yo can u take a crack at wesker???' so this is me, here, taking a crack at wesker. can't get over the fact that RE's most fearsome villain is named albert
Wordcount; 700ish
TW; dbd typical violence, death, mentions of mental and physical violence, suggestive themes, toxic behavior, narcissistic behavior, cursing, albert wesker is The Worst
Wesker thinks he's above everyone and everything, so let's make that clear right off the bat. Mans legitimately thinks he's unparalleled, please someone tell him to humble himself??
Anyhow.
That being said, Wesker's not the type to single out specific survivors. UNLESS, of course, the brand new survivor calls him a bitch to his face. Then, all bets are off...
What ticks him off the most is when he's made a fool of, especially by someone he sees as below him. Especially when you, a mere survivor (and a new one at that!) manage to somehow beat him at his own game, distracting him while the rest of your team escapes.
When you make it through the gates, he's 1) stunned and 2) furious. How had he been so shortsighted? How had you managed to actually outsmart him?
He swears to never let it happen again--and what better way to do that then by teaching you a lesson?
Trials with Wesker are immediately 1000000x worse than any other killers. The ambiance totally changes:
The air feels thick, unbreathable; there's a sense of complete and total dread that sucks the breath right out of your lungs. Tree branches sag, heavy with the promise of a bloody trial to follow.
Takes out the rest of your team as soon as he can in favor of focusing on you, like, they're Mori'd within three minutes.
You don't exist to him until any potential interruptions (your teammates) are eliminated, and will be straight-up ignored until they're out of the picture. Will Mori your teammates right in front of you in increasingly violent ways, staring at you and only you while he does the deed.
Aggressive, but in a weirdly calm way. He's cold and precise, very calculating, but won't hesitate to lash out in a moment of fury. Though logic guides most of Wesker's actions against you, emotion takes over more often than not...
Ex; Wesker would Mori you with his hands, but he thinks you're too far below him to deserve it, so you'll get Uroboros instead.
Not only does this scare you shitless, but it prolongs that feeling of helplessness he's trying so desperately to instill in you.
Also, he was literally the head of an elite tactical force, so not only is Wesker ruthless, but he's incredibly methodical. Knows how to wear down an opponent in every way and will do it to the point of overkill--he wants to watch the hope drain from your eyes on repeat. Nobody makes Wesker feel like a fool. Again, he's trying to teach you a lesson.
Studies you in and out of matches (everything from healing your teammates to fixing gens).
Not dumb enough to get close to the campfire, but when you're swapping stories with other survivors, you often get the feeling someone's watching you just out of sight.
I hate to say it, but Wesker's one of the killers you have, like, zero fighting chance against. Will actively laugh at you if you try to fight back, then slam to you against the nearest wall with Uroboros... ouch.
He's kind of a paradox tbh, because he doesn't want to give you attention (everyone's below him, remember?) but wants to knock you down a peg, effectively, painfully, over and over and over again. The only way to do that is to study you, so mans is suffering from INTENSE cognitive dissonance. Please send him to therapy.
Unlike other killers, he won't really get attached to you over time?? He is, however, royally pissed off when other killers mention how they Mori'd you, and will be twice as intense in the next trial he has with you. Mans is lowkey territorial.
TLDR; when Wesker targets you, he will target every aspect of you. He'll tear you down physically, psychologically, emotionally, and he'll do it to the extreme. He feels a need to regain his stolen honor, and, just like a bully on the playground, he thinks the best way to redeem himself is to push others around. And if anyone threatens that--whether they're a killer or a survivor--he'll take them out, too.
Yikes...
To say the least.

Bit of a longer one, but something has always felt off to me about the palaces in P5X and I think I figured out why…
These aren’t palaces and while they share the terminology, they function differently.
The method of access is changed to be based on travel in Mementos rather than keywords.
Kiuchi’s palace is based on his past lust and glory days as a baseball player rather than his vengeance quest against Motoha, when that’s arguably his greatest desire as of now.
Miyazawa’s palace is a film set disguised as a temple, with his shadow as the lead actor rather than an actual position of power like either a director or a Shinkansen. Bonus points that neither of his palaces themes refer to food at all, despite that being an integral part of Miyazawa’s day job.
Finally calling cards are excised from the heart changing process, and although we only see Kiuchi’s treasure, to my knowledge it doesn’t tie in at all to his desires outside of being a baseball (I don’t think it’s said if it’s the ball Arai struck him out with)
So what am I getting at?
The palaces of phantom x, while made of desires like the ones in 5, they are made of desires for “greatness” that is filtered through their distortions and corruptions.
Perhaps the “X Yaldabaoth” is a well intentioned (albeit seriously misguided) being seeking to grant humanity’s greatest desires on an individual level, more like Maruki in a way, and whomever is orchestrating these “phantom attacks” is seeking to prevent these palaces from forming.
(This game is so fun to speculate about, I can’t wait for demo 3!)
Ooo, that IS a fun theory! That's such a good catch, that these Palaces seem to be less of a distortion based on their desire, and more of a desire for something (greatness, as you put it).
I was going to point out that Palaces even in P5 do tend to have a bit of that- arguably Kamoshida, Madarame, and Shido's Palaces are also kind of a monument to their own perception of their greatness- but thinking about it, even then, the real focus of the Palaces isn't that in and of itself. Kamoshida's is what he does with that power (the volleyball team members being tortured, the cognitive Ann, Shiho, and Mishima, how he "rules over" it all) as he chases a past glory (his Olympic medal), Madarame's is about how he keeps his power going (his students as paintings, the whole museum showcasing "his" work) and the first time he stole art to such a direct extent (the Sayuri), and Shido's is... well, it's a lot of things, haha. It's how he reinforces his power, it's his end goal, it's how he protects himself, and it's all based on his political career (his legislator's pin).
That is to say, you're absolutely right- at least so far, even though Miyazawa does have some power over others in the real world, even his Palace seems like it might be more about where he wants to be than where he is. I will say, I'm pretty sure his Palace is a film set modeled to look like a Japanese castle, not a temple? But either way, I think the theory stands. I like your idea for how the "X Yaldabaoth" and phantoms might fit into this, too!
Now that you've got me thinking about it, maybe that's why the phantom thieves of P5X don't need calling cards? It's not something the Palace ruler has that's being stolen, it's something they want. Certainly still a theft of desires, but thinking about it, definitely not the same kind of "desire" as in P5, which probably fits with P5X's general lack of desires.
This is a really good catch, thanks for sending it in!

jupiter vs. saturn: capricorn
jupiter
they are more resourceful. in capricorn, jupiter can sometimes feel a little bit stunted; and in their younger years, they can flounder and become quite miserable without a clear path. as they go through life, however, their route becomes a little clearer, and they learn a little more about themselves and what they have to offer. they are natural problem solvers and work creatively to give themselves the best chances possible.
they are more charismatic. jupiter in capricorn is a bit smoother than saturn in capricorn; they have softer edges, and are a little more reflective. when it comes to dealing with people, this softness can come in very handy, making them quite charming, while never being a pushover. they are great in helping professions because of this.
they are more prone to overthinking. the downside to jupiter’s softening of capricorn is that it can lead to melancholy. they can get lost in their thoughts, walking down dark paths and spiralling easily. they may rely on another person to anchor them to the here-and-now, leading to feelings of anxiety around being alone or having time to themselves. they can burn themselves out trying to fill every minute of their days if not careful.
saturn
they are more pragmatic. saturn is perfectly at home in capricorn, so here we find them at their best. while saturn can be quite pessimistic, capricorn is dynamic, driven sign. our natives take on the best of both energies; they are ruled by their head, valuing logic and reflection highly. they aren't prone to feeling sorry for themselves, and instead prefer to solve problems in a practical manner, pulling from their skill set and experiences to figure their way through whatever life throws their way.
they are more persistent. the way that saturn in capricorn can draw from within to make progress in their external life makes for a highly tenacious individual; once they get going they just keep on, almost eternally. they are disciplined and highly motivated, but they do need to build momentum to ensure the best results. because of this, they can sometimes seem a bit slow to get started, but the incredible work they do makes up for any delays.
they are more prone to burnout. the huge amounts of energy and time they dedicate to their work does, however, make it inevitable that they'll burn out at some point. our natives often forget to take breaks and get away from their projects for a bit, and we all know how well that method works. in their younger years, they can thrive in the rollercoaster of energy and exhaustion, but as they age, they need to learn to balance themselves and their workload.
both
they are both anxious. capricorn is an active, thoughtful sign. in all its placements, it brings energy and enthusiasm, but not the bubbly kind, moreso the jittery, nervous kind. it can take our natives a long time to learn how to manage their anxiety; sometimes they charge straight past it, not knowing why they feel so rushed, and sometimes they freeze in place, trying to placate the sensation.
they are both highly motivated. once they do learn how best to manage their anxiety, they become able to channel all that energy into building the life they want. they are driven, motivated individuals, with the discipline to actually utilise all their resources and fulfil their goals.
they are both stern. there is a seriousness to capricorn (though they tend to have a wicked sense of humour) that can be interpreted as meanness by some. in reality, capricorn isn’t mean, but they are quite straightforward, and a have a very low tolerance for bullshit. they don’t play games and don’t forgive easily.
they are both driven by strong values. this is something that permeates everything capricorn does. they are people that, at their best, live a very straightforward life, because they live according to their values and morals. they don’t accept living with cognitive dissonance or lying to themselves, and they take integrity very seriously. they are honest people, who seek an honest life.

bill is giving bottom energy and i hope i am right
Oh, you're right, alright :)
Well, kinda. It's complicated. In this essay, I will
(Gonna mainly use the terms "top" and "bottom" more as surrogates for "dom" and "sub" here as that's kinda what I assume anon means; but powerbottom Bill is extremely real too)
If you asked him he'd tell you that he's always in charge, really, no matter what it may look like. That was his thing before he met Venuz -- no issues bottoming as long as he knows he's ultimately the dominant partner who holds the power. He'd play the subbiest sub to ever sub if it was for the sake of manipulating somebody.
Tumblr media
However, with the acquisition of his mortal body, he'd gotten a lot more...well, sensitive. When he was a being of pure energy he could fine-tune everything he felt, make his body react exactly how he wanted it to, but now? No control!
That's frankly part of what first drew him to Venuz in the beginning -- very mortal urges. He hadn't felt pure, physical attraction in a very long while, had turned those instincts off and only had sex when he wanted to, the same way one would decide "y'know, I think I'll play Wii Sports today". Arousal used to be a choice for him, a fun game like anything else, and now it wasn't.
Sure, Venuz wasn't of the same species, but he was close enough to trick his biology! Flatlanders* are very good at making out nuances in geometry the same way we are with faces, and one of the most attractive things to them is symmetry. Well, Venuz was symmetrical in a way only a god could be. His color was even and clean, his eye bright, his limbs strong and muscular...a very attractive triangle by Flatland standards.
Tumblr media
Of course there was strategy to it, seduction was his best bet in getting what he wanted, and if you asked Bill that is what he would tell you -- it was all part of the plan.
With that being said, he was fully aware of the power of sex -- it was what he was planning to take advantage of, after all -- but he'd failed to recognize that it was something he might be susceptible to, as well, now that he was a mortal. And really, at first, he didn't even entirely recognize it happening, both from a lack of experience and his advanced abilities of cognitive dissonance. So, he was taken quite off-guard by just how much a simple look from the Gun God could get those long-dormant gears turning on overdrive.
As a result, their first time wasn't nearly as...calculated or dignified as he had hoped. Frankly, the second Venuz touched him he couldn't really think anymore, and he enjoyed his place on the bottom a little more than he was happy with.
Tumblr media
Bill had gotten arguably just as much out of the act as Venuz had, and that was NOT the plan. Thankfully, he could lie to himself enough about it to where it wasn't a problem. The way Bill's gaze would trace those perfectly sixty degree angles? It was part of the plan, Venuz liked it! The way his whole body would quiver when Venuz would brush his fingers along his edges? Method acting, he was just too convincing! The way he'd drag his sharp little claws down Venuz's back in the throes of passion, leaving stinging red lines in their wake? Well, uh...Venuz didn't seem to mind, so...sure, that's probably strategy.
As things went on, however, and Bill became more comfortable with Venuz, more willing to be vulnerable, he started to mind less and less about it. Bill loves sensory overload, that's basically his whole personality, and inevitably that meant his mortal body being reduced to a trembling, boneless mass on the bed by the end of the night. So, really, being the bottom and letting Venuz take control is very enjoyable for him when he's able to get over himself.
With that being said, it's something very hard for him to admit when he's got such a massive ego. Sometimes it can call the shots beforehand and demand a role reversal, but Venuz is very willing to be beneath his sexy demon boyfriend, so it all works out either way.
Tumblr media
Frankly, though, I'd say you're right, anon -- he is more suited to a bottom. Not only for the reasons above, but also for the much sappier reason that he feels comfort in knowing his lover is strong, maybe even stronger than him. He's always anxious about losing Venuz, so anything that can reassure him that the Gun God is this all-powerful, larger-than-life deity fulfills something very deep within him, even when it's in such a lewd setting.
But, TL;DR, he's a switch who thinks he's a dom, in denial of his submissive side. But, Venuz'll help him come to terms with it, don't you worry :)
*Note that Flatland is meant as a placeholder for Bill's home dimension; it's not exactly Flatland

7 and 18 from the WIP-centric Ask The Writer!
Thanks! @iamthepulta, you asked for this combo too!
7. How did you first get the idea for this story? I’m obsessed with the history of the New England whale fishery. It feels like it’s a part of my very fabric. A part of my soul’s in there, for some reason or another. I’ve waxed poetic about why I’m drawn to this history BUT, in short, I was fascinated by this world that held so many contradictions, and held such a brutal poetry within those contradictions. And I wanted to explore the lives and motivations of the people who found themselves in it.
18. What method have you used to write this story (typing on a laptop or phone, handwritten, etc.)…? Unlike prose (where I like to have a combo of typed and handwritten, because writing longhand helps cognitively stir things), I write scripts first by…walking around my apartment talking to myself haha. I act out conversations and record them as I do to get the language down, and then transcribe the lines that hit well. I think it does the same cognitive stirring as handwriting does for prose. Then, once the dialogue is down I think about stage direction and what visuals I want to attach to it.

Much Like I Scoff At Your Ineptitude
Greetings, subordinates! It seems that some of you fragile souls are struggling to maintain equilibrium in the face of life's minor inconveniences- most notably @eccevenitvulpes of the Tumblr realm, at whose request I penned this guide upon the methods of warding off anxiety attacks. Yes, I, Lord Morgarath of the Mountains of Rain and Night, shall graciously bestow upon you my unparalleled wisdom and restore a semblance of composure to your chaotic existence.
When you feel the first tendrils of anxiety creeping up on you like the desperate pleas of peasants begging for scraps, take a moment to breathe. This is something even a barnyard animal can manage; surely you can do it too. Inhale deeply through your nose, filling those puny lungs of yours, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat until you regain a veneer of self-composure.
Now, you must realize that anxiety is nothing more than your feeble mind playing tricks on you. Summon whatever minuscule amount of willpower you possess and confront those absurd thoughts head-on. Question their validity. Are you truly in mortal danger, or are you just catastrophizing? If the solution befuddles you, rest assured it's the latter. Take a moment to scoff at your unease, much like I scoff at your ineptitude. Ridicule it for the pathetic excuse for fear that it is. Picture it as a sniveling coward groveling in the corner of your subconscious. Show it no mercy, for when does it ever show you any?
Turn your attention next to the matter of distraction. Attempt to muster enough cognitive function to divert your attention elsewhere. Find something, anything, to distract your brain from its downward spiral into panic. Count backwards from 100, recite the names of every dullard you've ever encountered, or envision yourself triumphing over your own incompetence.
If all else fails, seek solace in the company of others. No doubt there are fellow imbeciles with whom you may join forces and engage in mindless chatter, or better yet, in a group activity that requires minimal brainpower. Perhaps a game of chance, such as dice rolling or rock-leaf-swords, shall suffice to distract you from your mental irrationalities. Should you be unable to locate such associates, an animal will often provide better companionship than a human ever could.
In conclusion, my dear inferiors, warding off an anxiety attack is a simple matter of mustering the meager remnants of your intellect and taking basic actions to cut away the thorns attempting to strangle your ineffectual minds. Follow these steps faithfully, and perhaps you'll emerge from your next anxiety attack with a shred of dignity intact, or better yet, ward the anxiety off entirely.

do u believe in reality shifting esp if using subliminals? can we really be someone else in another reality that isnt this one?
Yep, because reality is an illusion, a simulation, the matrix, or as I like to think about it: a video game. It’s a video game you created and you’re playing for fun.
The average unenlightened human thinks they are stuck as the powerless avatar in the game, at the hands of some higher power.
Manifestors figured out they could customize their avatar, set the game to easy mode, and found cheat codes for infinite money glitches and such.
Shifters figured out they could play different levels, different worlds, or even play as different characters in different games entirely.
But ultimately, we are not the avatar in the game. We’re the ones playing the game. And as the one in control, we are free to experience any version of any game we created at any time.
MIT scientist Donald Hoffman studies and teaches upon consciousness and cognitive science. He compares reality to a VR simulation. When asked about the purpose of life in this interview, he says:
“We're here to get lost, to identify with the avatar. And then to wake up and to walk away from that all and to realize we're going to take this headset off, and nothing was lost.”
As for things like subliminals, ultimately they are not the things with the power. We are the ones in control, and the only thing we need in order to manifest or shift is to desire & intend.
However, since here on earth we’re programmed with limiting beliefs every moment of our lives to believe we’re not in control, a lot of us need methods like subliminals, affirmations, meditations and other things to help us get there at first.

A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 079 - Attack on the Medical Storage Station
Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 4 Episode 5 - Cold Station 12
Tumblr media
The cold open to this one was great. It was a simple history lesson between Arik Soong and the Augments as children, but it did wonders in establishing Soong's ideology and how he indoctrinated to him. It's really good because what he said is technically the truth, humans apparently do fear genetic modification, but the way he twists that to his own cause is just great writing.
After the intro, we cut to Enterprise in the modern day, and the crew have touched down at that same location from the flashback. Of course, since the augments and soong are going to "liberate" more Augments, they're not here.
Archer finds some old recordings of Soong raising the Augments, particularly a birthday party, which confirms his parental love for them is real, and I'm still really excited to see how that dynamic plays out. Later we cut to Soong on the stolen klingon ship, and he deerly misses Raakin, and is genuinely saddened by his death. The way Malik also manipulates the way he tells the story, to make it seem like an accident is beautifully sinister.
The Crew also encounter one person who was apparently left behind in the colony. They over power him quickly after he attacks, and take him aboard enterprise. Phlox does some analysis, and apparently he doesn't have any of the other Augment's enhancements.
The augments and soong are heading to Cold Station 12, a Human and Denobulan run facility where the Augment embryo's are stored. Apparently, we're finally going to meet Phlox's friend Dr Lucas who's the director of the facility, and Phlox also has briefly worked there before, and he requests to be part of the boarding crew. While these preparations are being done, however, the augments arrive at the facility and easily overtake it.
Smike, the non-augmented augment is an interesting character. Him coming to terms with the fact that everything he was told about earth is wrong is an interesting character arc. And phlox's personal concern over his friend is also excellent.
We also get some more insight into Archer's father, who was briefly brought up in the previous episode, who died of a disease that could have been cured by the kind of genetic engineering that Soong is fighting for. Putting the conflict so close the archer personally is really interesting. I'm excited to see where he lies on the topic by the end of this arc.
Malik and Soong are still fantastic as villains. I'm still loving Soong's energy, and I'm starting to see lines drawn between where the two stand on certain issues. The methods of torture he uses to get the codes for the Embryo's out of Doctor Lucas are genuinely terrifying. Throughout the episode, Malik and Soong's disagreements push closer and closer to boiling over and I just can't wait to see who wins out when that happens
The Enterprise crew that gets transported onto the station are very quickly captured, and Soong's reunion with Smike is really touching. I like that Soong is playing the cognitive dissonance game over the other Augments treatment of Smike, and not seeing it as the obvious flaw in his ideology that it is. His genuine parental love is still there, and it's just a really interesting trait to have Soong happily support Smike's decision to work with the Enterprise crew, even if it's going against his own goals. Soong is a really fascinating character. Malik however, has other plans for smike, and kills him while Soong is in the Embryo storage.
At the end of the episode, Soong gets away with all of the Embryos, and Malik also decides to take some alien pathogens with them to use as a weapon, and we're left on another cliff-hanger as they escape and all the pathogens on the station are also set to release and kill everyone on the station.
This episode was another excellent one. A lot my conclusion here is gonna be exactly the same as yesterdays, I'm just loving this arc's themes and particularly it's villains. Soong and Malik are just really fascinating characters.

Takuto Maruki Appreciation Post
Tumblr media
I recently finished my very first ever playthrough of Persona 5 Royal. And I have to say, as much as I was enjoying Persona 5 right from the beginning, I did not expect to meet a character that would become one of my favorite characters of all time. Takuto Maruki is SUCH. A. GREAT. CHARACTER and I have a lot of thoughts to obsessively pour out so.... spoilers abound, y’all!
For anyone that doesn’t know, Persona 5 is a game that draws inspiration from a lot of real-world psychological theories and research. The most basic way I can think to describe the game’s plot is, a group of teens - who call themselves the Phantom Thieves - dive into the psyches of a bunch of evil adults and change their cognition to make them feel remorse for their crimes and turn themselves in.
When the first big target of the game, an abusive teacher, is defeated, the school brings in a counselor to talk with the students and help them process their grief and traumas. This counselor is Dr. Maruki, one of the very few genuinely nice, caring adult characters in the game. He’s humble, selfless, kind of dorky, and treats the students as equals, genuinely wanting to make them comfortable and help them through their issues.
Spoiler alert: He is also the final boss of the game.
But, here’s the thing... Even though he becomes a major antagonist that the Phantom Thieves have to take down, there is no “AHA!” moment where he suddenly becomes a mustache-twirling villain or reveals that he was a monster all along. No, even as an antagonist, Maruki stays the selfless, caring soul he always was. For the first time, the game gives us an antagonist that isn’t a cartoon villain - it comes down to a clash of ideals, and questionable methods to achieve an arguably noble cause, that makes the Phantom Thieves need to stop him. And, for the first time, stopping him isn’t something the group feels good about doing. Even during his final boss fight, he never gets malicious or nasty, he begs you to see “reason” and accept his help, and he regrets that it’s come to having to fight over it.
All throughout the game (and, it’s worth noting, Persona 5 Royal is a very long game), Maruki befriends each of the protagonists, talks to them about their desires and fears, gets to know them. He becomes very popular with the whole student body. He reaches out to Ren Amamiya, the main protagonist and playable character, for help on a research paper he is working on, engaging in conversations about the topic of cognitive psience and curing psychological wounds the way you can cure physical ones.
Late in the game, Maruki essentially gains godlike powers (long story), and uses them to do exactly that - he alters the cognition of literally everyone to change reality and create a perfect utopia where everyone is happy, and psychological pain and trauma do not exist. People that have died are suddenly alive again, abusive parental figures are suddenly picture-perfect mentors, a cat that thinks he’s a human suddenly is a human....
Maruki essentially brainwashes the masses to make them happy and free of trauma. The issue is, it also undoes a lot of the growth and self-reflection that comes from pain. The utopia he creates is static, people are no longer really growing or thinking for themselves. They’re happy, but they are no longer the people their pasts shaped them into.
You later find out that Maruki himself is a deeply traumatized, wounded, tragic man. He essentially has a messiah complex, taking away everyone’s pain and trauma and enduring it all himself. The ability he uses to alter the masses’ cognition is an ability he had (to a lesser extent) for a while now. When the love of his life suffered a home invasion and lost her parents in the senseless violence, she became catatonic and depressed, so he used his ability to make her forget that trauma - which also made her forget him. He chose to walk away and let her live happily without him, to avoid triggering any unhappy memories in her by his mere presence.
In the late stages of the game where he creates an entirely new reality, he could just brainwash the protagonists, but he desperately wants them to choose his reality and want his help, and is willing to fight fairly for his ideals when they choose not to.
He truly believes that what he is doing is right, and in certain points of view it kind of is right. He’s not hurting anyone - in fact, he is openly removing any hurt from everyone’s lives. Even his final boss music is REALLY freakin’ weird for a final boss theme, as catchy and amazing as it is. You wouldn’t expect a climactic final battle song to have lyrics like “You deserve better”, “It doesn’t have to be like this”, “We don’t need to have this conflict”, etc.
My favorite characters are usually villains. I LOVE villains. Maruki has easily become one of my favorite characters of all time, but honestly, he is NOT a villain. He’s an antagonist, but there is not an “evil” bone in Maruki’s body. He is a kind, selfless, wounded soul that really wanted to take away everyone’s pain and suffering so they never had to feel as empty or as broken as him.
In a lot of ways, I see myself in Maruki. I have a lot of trauma and pain in my past. I work with kids, and am in a role where they open up to me and I help them out of similar holes I fell into as a child. The best way to battle your inner demons is to help other people vanquish theirs. If I suddenly fell into godlike powers tomorrow, would I try to do something similar with that power? Hard to say, but it’s a fascinating thing to think about.
