A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 106 - Deep Cover within a Deep Cover
Star Trek: Discovery - Season 1 Episode 11 - The Wolf Inside
Tumblr media
We open this episode with a monologue from Michael about her time so far in the Empire universe, and how the constant need to watch her back is effecting her. Additionally, we find out that this universe's Saru is a slave, which is sad to see, but for this universe's standards should have been expected. Also the use of a transporter as a method of execution is absolutely brutal to see.
Michael has managed to obtain the information on the Defiant, however cracking the firewall from the Shenzhou is difficult, and sending it to Discovery would be noticed.
Unfortunately back on Discovery, our crew has discovered the death of Colbert, and their immediate assumption is that in his current state, Paul did it. Sylvia has an idea to cure Paul's condition however, and takes him down to the engineering lab. Her theory is that the Spore Network is simply using all of Paul's physical resources to keep the portal between the universes open, and that a fresh dose of spores might wake him up, and she puts this hypothesis to the test.
On the Shenzhou, Michael has been given the location of the leader of the Klingon rebellion, someone called "The Firewolf" and is ordered to kill him.
In a private conversation with Lorca, Michael reveals that she is really hopeful that this rebellion could lead to a Federation like entity if it wins. It's even made up of the same mix of species as the Federation founders, just substituting Klingons for Humans. She is reluctant to go through with her orders. Her plan is to beam into the Firewolf's camp with Ash to negotiate. The pair are captured immediately after appearing, and are taken to the firewolf.
Apparently Sarek is among the firewolf's camp, and they refer to him as "The Prophet". Sarek performs a mindmeld with Michael, and sees the memories from the Federation Universe, and he clears any doubt about Michael's intentions. Michael, looking for advice on how to help with the war in the Federation universe starts asking the Firewolf questions, however a lot of the Firewolf's answers start to trigger Ash's sleeper programming, and a sword fight ensues. Sarek manages to break it up however, and continues to vouch for Michael.
Meanwhile on Discovery, Sylvia's experiment is having a positive effect on Paul, and moving the stress on his brain to some of his other organs, however it then goes wrong, and medical staff have to step in to stabilise him, but he goes braindead, albiet only temporarily. Once Tilly is alone with him, we get to see Paul's perspective inside the spore network, and we're teased with him encountering his empire universe counterpart.
Back on Shenzhou, Ash finally confesses as much as he can about his current state to Michael, and he starts to remember his true past. Apparently, he is a Klingong that was molded into a human and given false memories to infiltrate discovery. More specifically, he is the Federation Universe's counterpart to the Firewolf. He attacks Michael to avenge T'Kuvma, but the Shenzhou crew apprehend him, and Michael orders to have him Transporter Executed. As he sufficates in Space though, Discovery transport him aboard, and turns out this was partially a ruse to get the Data on the Defiant to Discovery. We're then hit with a final blow of another ship appearing to destroy the Rebels themselves, and we're hit with another surprise that apparently the Emperor is Georgiou, something which I really wasn't expecting.
I'm liking this whole corruption arc for Michael, and I thought the Ash twist was fun. It was nice seeing more of this universe, but I wish we could have spent a bit more time fleshing out the Rebels. Good episode, but I think the previous one was a bit better. Still excited to see where this goes now that the Emperor is directly involved though.

It's funny when you watch Star Trek as a Whovian. You pick up similarities between the different alien races.
The trill and the Q can both be Time Lord analogs, and we all know the Borg are the Cybermen, but the Sontarans and Klingons are definitely on different spectrums of the warrior race front.

Some modern au headcanons
Mike played Ted and Karen against each other one Christmas and got two iPhones. Purely so he could give one of them to Jane.
Jane loves the spy kids and shrek franchises. Most for Antonio Banderas.
Dustin roped Steve and Max into watching supernatural with him. Dustin watches it for the lore. Steve watched it for the car and the ladies. Max watches it for Jared Padalecki. None of them like the roadkill in the trench coat though
Lucas in the only on in the party who can cook competently if he has to. Max can work a water tap. Dustin can shake down a vending machine. Mike can make waffles. Jane can eat the waffles. Will can burn toast
Will’s most watched film on Netflix and Disneyplus is the Peanuts movie. He sees Charlie Brown as a kindred spirit.
Jim’s a fan of classics. Colombo. MacGyver. Hawaii 5-0. Not the remakes though. Just the originals. He’s also a big fan of the law and order franchise
Joyce is a big fan of old sitcoms like the golden girls and Mary Tyler Moore.
Nancys favourite Disney film is sleeping beauty. And yes. Her and Jonathan have gone as Aurora and Phillip for Halloween. Twice.
Robin and Steve play wingman for each other when they go out and meet girls.
Max is trying to teach Lucas skate boarding. In return. He’s trying to teach her how to cook. Neither endeavour has been very successful. Yet
Will and Jonathan shared a room after Jim and Jane moved in before Jonathan moved in with Nancy. Now Will shares with Max.
It’s an open secret that Karen and Ted are far from just the social drinkers they claim to be.
Erica’s role models growing up were DW Read and Angelica Pickles. But are any of you really surprised?
Max’s dark secret is she has a bureau full of minions merchandise
The Hargrove’s doesn’t exist. Max is a Hopper just like Jane.
It’s an unspoken agreement between Nancy, Mike and Lucas that if both Ted and Karen die before Mike’s 18th then the Sinclair’s can adopt Mike if they so choose.
Dustin in the only one with tumblr. He’s got a enough blocked tags to fill Notre Dame up to Emanuel.
Steve’s a driving instructor. Dustin’s his only successful student.
Joyce and Jim are married with their four kids. Jonathan, Will, Jane and Max.
Mike makes it no secret that his favourite out of Nancy’s peer group is Jonathan. Jane’s is Argyle. Will’s is Robin. Dustin’s is Steve. Lucas and Max’s is Nancy.
Dustin and Will the only two who actively enjoy the muppets. Mike like the Simpsons. Jane likes Futurama. Lucas likes Friends. And Max likes new girl
Lucas is a whovian (the Clara era specifically). Max only watches Star Wars for Finn. Jane got Mike interested in Star Trek. Dustin and Will are Harry Potter fans. They’re both hinny and romione shippers so there’s very little arguments.
The Byers have a dog. The Henderson’s have several cats. The Wheelers have a hamster. The Sinclair’s have a horse.
Jane and Mike are speed dial number one on each other’s phone’s.
There’s no upside down and no Brenner. But Jane still has telekinesis. Except without the nosebleed’s.
Robin’s a big musical fan. But the only way she got Steve to watch them with her is by telling him about what the women look like.
Nancy found herself uncomfortably attracted to Skimbleshanks when she watched Cats 2019
Jane convinced Mike to watch once upon a time. Mike likes Emma. Jane likes Killian. They both hate Regina. And they both think Henry should’ve had more magic than he did.
Jonathan and Nancy are only living together. But Mike still calls Jonathan his brother in law. Half because it makes Ted go puce. Half because he’s already planning their wedding. He’s even gotten Holly in on it.
And last but not least. Lonnie’s dead. Car crash. No-one misses him. Joyce only went to the funeral out of respect for his mother. Jim proposed at the wake.

You know what I miss....
I really miss conversations consisting of equal parts pop culture quotes/references & sardonic mockery.
When I say 'pop culture quotes' I'm not referring to the almost universal but, for the most part, short lived quotes from the likes of The Fast Show, Harry Enfield, Peter Kay, Catherine Tate & whatever Sacha Baron Cohen's latest 'just short enough of offensive to broadcast' character of the month was... whose shows seemed to be simply 'catchphrase generators' meant to give the general public something to shout at each other ad infinitum for a few weeks until they were, inevitably, replaced by the next 'mildly-humorous-at-the time-but-quickly-becoming-annoying' one, two (or if the writers put the coke down long enough...) three word phrase to bounce around the workplace & keep the 'artist' in question relevant enough to beg another season.
No!
I'm talking about the quotes & references from tv shows, books & movies that have become so beloved & iconic, no matter how small the fandom may be, that in certain cases a single word can communicate your love of a particular property to any other fan that happens to be in the vicinity. Say "Shiny" in a packed room with the right inflection & watch the heads of every Browncoat there swivel in your direction. Say "Geronimo" or "Allons y" & you've just let every Whovian in attendance have a brief glimpse into your preference of Doctor.
What I'm talking about are book series from the likes of Douglas Adams & Terry Pratchett. Tv shows such as Scrubs, Firefly, Doctor Who, Animaniacs, Star Trek, Red Dwarf, Freakazoid & Tiny Toon Adventures. Renowned films ranging across genres from The Lost Boys & The Crow to Blazing Saddles & Ghostbusters. The Back to the Future Trilogy, Star Wars, Flash Gordon, Con Air, Rocky Horror, Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, Every Monty Python movie... all the way to the more cult end of the spectrum such as Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse to barely known flicks like Airheads & Ski School.
Despite the different mediums & genres, the main thing that all of these have in common (as well as many others not mentioned) is that they're all so damn quotable. Incidentally, another commonality is that the majority were created & aired in the 1970's, 80's & 90's. Whether it was due to my age at the time I initially watched them or because the writing & performances were just better back then I don't know... but, with the possible exception of Game of Thrones & certain movies from the MCU,... there just don't seem to be as many movie/tv lines that embed themselves in the mind these days. (As I type this there's actually a Writer's strike going on... unlike the previous one back in the 90's(?)... I wonder if these guys actually deserve the raise tbh)
Take something with a fairly wide fanbase like, say, Red Dwarf. Any casual watcher who enjoyed it at the time will happily call you a Smeg Head if you happen to mention the show in passing... those of us whose fandom is a little more 'rabid' could tell you what Kryten says the apple is when Lister is teaching him to lie (in the episode 'Camille')... *answer at the end of the post for anyone interested... not that anyone but me will ever read this drivel.
The point is that even the most casual of fans can throw out quotes to the above at the drop of a hat...
To get back to my original point (it had to happen eventually)... the conversations I miss having were with friends who were far more than casual fans. These were friends with whom I could throw out an obscure line from an episode of Freakazoid & they'd instantly come back with the response... completely screen accurate... with the perfect timing & inflections. Someone could be getting increasingly frustrated about a printer spitting out endless blank sheets of paper & another friend would comment that "Mr Flibble's very cross"... instantly, the mood of the entire room would lift as we all giggled our collective tits off & the quotes bounced back & forth like tennis balls. I miss standing at the lift with my old next door neighbour (an absolute authority on all things WB animation) & waiting until one of us inevitably cracked & had to say "Elelator go down the hole" which would be instinctively followed by the other uttering "I push the button... my turn, not your turn, my turn... I push the button"!
There's a certain type of person that loves their fandoms (obsesses?) enough that these lines so easily drip into their subconscious & become an integral part of their lexicon, especially when surrounded by the like minded.
I used to spend a lot of time with these people. It was comfortable. Conversation was light & easy because we 'belonged'. Unfortunately, life happens... people drift, circumstances change, new situations create changes in social circles... we end up with different groups &, often, struggle to find that 'belonging' again. Not because these new groups aren't nice, kind, sociable & welcoming people... but simply because they're not 'our' people. We can always find common ground if we try hard enough but it's often not enough common ground to sustain any meaningful communication & certainly not the 'light, easy & comfortable' communication that makes you feel that you are part of the 'tribe'... warm, welcomed & wanted... we, inevitably, end up on the outskirts of these groups, unable to get past much more than a greeting & a minute or 2 of small talk before moving on. We find ourselves, over time, with fewer & fewer invitations to social gatherings &, possibly worse, we find ourselves not wanting to go anyway.
These days we have the wonderful dumpster fire that is the internet. We can find all of our fandoms & shared interests with a tap. We find 'our people' are everywhere... in all the remote corners of the world. The friends we've drifted from are right there on social media. But.... it's just not the same as being there, in the room, making casual, off-the-cuff, random references to a common love, in the complete & total knowledge that the person next to you just 'gets it'... & you... & I miss that!
The sardonic mockery that made up the remainder of these conversations is another story entirely... maybe one day.
*the apple in question was described as "The Bolivian Navy on maneuvers in the South Pacific"

Time to watch the Classics...
Classic Who
Doctor Who - series 1 episode 1 - An Unearthly Child
What... Okay. Here we go.
THE INTRO THEME is amazing! It's so different, and magical, whimsical!
Tardis my love - everytime I see her I'm besotted.
Coal hill school! Okay, okay, I knew the importance of Coal Hill School because I've done a lot of googling over the years about everything Doctor Who, but still, actually seeing the school at its very beginning is awesome.
Omg hello welcome to the 60s - 60s, 60s everywhere, hair, clothes, speech patterns and vocabulary, man/woman imbalance, and obviously visual effects, story rhythm and montage. Though, I'm wondering. How come the OG Star Trek from the same era is in color and sort of, more rhythmic, more... I don't want to use modern because it sounds like I'm criticizing Classic Who and saying modern ways of doing tv shows are better, which I'm not. It's not about the quality of one thing over the other, just the feel of it. Two scifi shows, one British, one American, from the very early 1960s, and it's two very distinct feels and made. It's absolutely fascinating.
Susan Foreman!!!! I've heard so much about her, I'm glad to finally meet her.
"I suppose she could be a foreigner" - ha ha ha ha ha, oh, you have no idea! Also, that line is interesting. It's after all at the heart of it all. The Doctor is a foreigner wherever they go, but also so deeply entrenched in the very fabric of the universe that's it's hard to dislodge them.
Sorry, sorry, I shouldn't comment on Classic Who, especially as early as the very first episode of the very first season of the very first Doctor, with my understanding and reading of New Who. After all, as we'll see as soon as this episode, at the moment the entire universe intradiegetic of Doctor Who is very much not installed.
I'll try to keep my 21st century comments out as much as I can while going through all 26 seasons, but I can't promise that I won't go on tangents from time to time.
"It's alive"? Wtf, Ian? I mean, yes, the Tardis is sentient and she's a lovely badass, but how is that your FIRST thought when you put your hand on a wooden door and feel it vibrate? Why alive and not, Idk, "motorized", "working", hell, even weird?
DOCTOOOOOOOR. Why, hello, First. Let's get to meet you. I'm very curious.
So the Doctor was a troll and a sassy haughty puff and huff expert from the beginning. Amazing. This explains so much.
Holy shit, that OG Tardis. Wow. She's cute.
Susan says she made up the name... But then it's a classic Time Lord ship... Oooh, inconsistencies from the beginning. I like it. Want to shove it into every-person-who's-hating-on-Thirteenth-right-now's face. Yeah, yeah, moving on. We're in 1963 now, not 2021.
"I tolerate this century but I don't like it" - huh. Okay. I mean. You do you, Doctor. Just fyi, you gonna be stuck in that century a lot of time. Better start to like it.
Oh, WOW, the First Doctor is a prick. That's. Wow. Tangent again, I knew there's a reason why being abrupt and prattish is one of the Doctor's trait throughout regenerations, but damn, First is savage as hell. Wow, I'm impressed Barbara or Ian haven't punched him yet. (Donna wouldn't have hesitated)
Holy shit. The sound of the Tardis leaving is the same. Don't leave the brakes on! I love this sound.
Where are we going now. So the first travel with companions is an accident because the Doctor and his granddaughter were fighting. Ha. I want to say "classic Doctor" but that would be a bit on the nose.
Jesus that's a lot of transition scenes. And weird faces. What is even going on with the special effects. Listen, I know the BBC back then didn't give a lot of funds to Doctor Who. I know we're even lucky to still have these episodes, what's with the fire and all. But come on. Those special effects are hilarious.
This is so much fun, I can't wait to see it all! Only 744 episodes left (I think - do Betaseries/Google count the episodes that have disappeared in that list?).

Note: I updated this on 06/06/23 because Dax's muzzle was too chunky. It's much better now!
Well…first post… let’s see, why not delve right into my Trek obsession…because that has all I have been seeing and liking since I downloaded this app. Nothing but SPACE and Spirk 🤦🏼‍♀️
This has been a re- obsession as of late. I hate to admit it but I haven’t seen any Star Trek series all the way through…except maybe Picard and Voyager since it’s my favourite…but I have seen a handful of episodes from each. I have corrected this error by starting from the beginning with TOS. I have a plethora of TOS SPIRK goodies to come soon because I. AM. WORSHIPPING. MY. SPACE. HUSBANDS! While also simping over Spock for myself. Zachary Quinto is also included. In my fantasy he bats for my team as well OK?!
Trek is a big part of my life. My mother named me after Voyager’s Seven of Nine. (Seven you may ask?! I wish…but no, she decided Annika was better for a normal human girl) I have been to museums to see props and have even seen some of the cast up close at conventions but unfortunately I wasn’t deeply involved then… (2018- 2019) The last two years have brought on exciting changes. Trek is back in the spotlight and my mind. (It won’t friggin leave! Even when I sleep!)
But… like all nerds with access to the internet I soon found out about DS9…watched like half an episode about Kira Nerys, researched her and some other characters like Jadzia Dax and fell deeply in love. I decided to feature them in this piece here and I can’t wait to seep further away from my apparent straightness when I reach DS9. I am now fantasizing my life as a Bajoran babe alongside these leading ladies.
Description: Hanging with my fantasy moms, the 2 out of many fandom moms. My wrinkled nose fantasy has come to life! Jadzia is rocking her trill spots and The little trill plush I added as a last minute addition has seemed to peak her interest. I immediately knew I had to include one when I found out they exist IRL. Found them on Etsy. Ugly but cute tbh..however I have spent too much on Trek merch recently. *no regrets*
I think I called this piece Bajoran Babes and a Worm 🪱
…but…wait
You noticed yet? Is your eyesight ok if you haven’t? Themz don’t be humans! Themz be equines!
Yep..I mainly draw MLP characters including crossover sketches so fair warning…Ponies will be a common occurrence with this profile.
You’ll be seeing my Oc frequently from now on. The purple dragon character. Her name is Sploched Canvas / Sploot for short. You may know me already from the official MLP amino as BooptheSploot too! So Hello again my timemuffins! If y’all are from there as well. She is quite dear to me. Her cutie mark has a Tardis and paint marks so if you haven’t guessed already, Whovian blood runs thick with this one and time travel is something I wish to do desperately!
(⚠️Important note) Before I log off and stop rambling your ears off. Be aware like many others on tumblr, I am strictly prohibiting the theft, tracing and or recolouring of my art or characters. If you wish to draw my characters, any of them please…just be thoughtful and ask before hand. I don’t bite. It’s just I’ve dealt with theft before and I have no tolerance for it.
Lastly I guess I should say, Hello Tumblr, hello this whole new world…*cue Aladdin music* I have arrived…please don’t let me regret it!
Enjoy! 🖖

Vintage Shows to Watch While You Wait for the Next Episode of WandaVision - The 60s
Tumblr media
So the 60s is the era that Wandavision pulls most heavily from for it’s inspiration. So much so that one could make the argument that each of the first three episodes are all set in the 1960s. Episode one pulls from the early 60s with multiple Dick Van Dyke refences, episode two is very Bewitched inspired, and episode three is aesthetically very similar to The Brady Bunch which started in ‘69. As such it was hard to narrow down the list for this decade and I had to get creative in some ways.
1. The Andy Griffith Show (1960 - 1968)
Tumblr media
The Andy Griffith Show gets kind of a bad rap now a days for being, supposedly, a conservative’s wet dream. People claiming it as such have apparently never actually seen the series. Oh yes, it’s very much set in white rural 60s America and will occasionally present the obliviously outdated joke, but the story of a widowed sheriff being the only sane man in a small town full of lovable lunatics, who prefers to solve his and others problems with negotiation and hair brained schemes as opposed to violence has far more in common with modern day Steven Universe than whatever genocidal fantasy fake rednecks have in their heads.
As the gif above shows Andy Griffith was very subtlety progressive for its time. Andy was a stanch pacifist, pro-gun control, treated drug addicts and prisoners with respect, and all the women he would date had careers, ect. and so on. It’s not a satire making any sort of grand political statements but the series had a moral center that was far more left than many realize.
But if it’s not a satire, then what type of comedy is it?
The Andy Griffith Show excels in what I like to call, ‘awkward comedy’. See everyone in Mayberry is far too nice to just come out and tell a character they’re making an ass of themselves, so therefore whoever is the idiot punching bag of the episode’s focus must slowly unravel as everyone looks on in helpless pity until said character realizes the folly of their ways and the townsfolk come together to make them feel happy and accepted once more. Wandavision takes this polite idyllic awkwardness and plays it up for horror instead of laughs.
2. The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961 - 1966)
Tumblr media
The creators of Wandavision actually met with Dick Van Dyke himself to pick his brain and learn how sitcoms were made back then. Paul Bentley also took inspiration from Van Dyke in his performance of the sitcom version of Vision, while Olsen stated Mary Tylor Moore had a heavy influence on her character of Wanda. But more than just being a point of homage, The Dick Van Dyke Show was hugely influential in modernizing the family sitcom and breaking a lot of the unspoken traditions and ‘rules’ of the 50s television era. It’s also just really, really funny.
3.The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (1962 - 1965)
Tumblr media
Bit of a cheat here. Alfred Hitchcock Presents actually started in 1955 as a half hour anthology show, but in ‘62 the show got a revamp and was extended into a full hour tv series. I knew I wanted The Twilight Zone to be covered in my episode one recap, but ‘The Master of Suspense’ couldn’t be forgotten. While The Twilight Zone reveled in the surreal and supernatural, Alfred Hitchcock pioneered the thriller genre and made real life seem dangerous, horrifying, and other worldly.
4. Doctor Who (1963 - present day) vs Star Trek (1966 - present day)
Tumblr media
Just like how westerns dominated the air waves during the 50s, science fiction was the center of the cultural zeitgeist of the 60s. From Lost in Space to My Favorite Martian, space aliens and robots were everywhere. So naturally I had to name drop the two sci-fi juggernauts that still air to this today. If you thought that the rivalry between Star Wars and Star Trek was bad then you’ve never seen a chat full of Whovians and Trekkies duking it out over who is the better monster, the Borg or the Cyberman. But which one has the more influence over Wandavision?
Well Star Trek owes it’s existence to sitcoms. As with The Twilight Zone before it, Star Trek was produced by Desilu Productions and it’s co-founder and CEO, Lucille Ball, was the series biggest supporter behind the scenes, lobbying for it when it faced early cancelation. As with all things sitcomy, everything ties back to I Love Lucy in the end. However despite that little backstory, it would seem that the series has very little to do with Wandavision itself beyond being quintessentially American.
I would argue that Wandavision owes much to Doctor Who though. Arguably more so than any show mentioned in this retrospective. Time travel, alternate realities, trouble in quite suburbia, brainwashing, people coming back from the dead, ect... just about every trope you can find in Wandavision has also appeared in Doctor Who at some point. As a series that can go anywhere and do anything, Doctor Who was a pioneer of marrying genres in new and interesting ways.
Tumblr media
5. Bewitched (1964 - 1972) and I Dream of Jeannie (1965 - 1970)
Tumblr media
It’s hard to pick one series over another because they’re essentially the same show. A mortal man falls in love with a magical girl who upends their lives with magic filled hijinks as they try their best not to have their secret discovered by the rest of the world. And both have their fingerprints all over the DNA of Wandavision.
There’s only two core differences; Samantha and Jeannie have completely different personalities, with Sam being confident and knowledgeable and Jeannie being naïve and oblivious, along with their relationships with their respective men, Sam and Darrin being married and in love at the start of the series and Jeannie chasing after Tony in the beginning in a will they/won’t they affair, finally only getting together in the last season.
6. The Munsters (1964 - 1966) vs The Adams Family (1964 - 1966)
Tumblr media
Fans of these two shows are forever sadden that there never was a crossover between them. Because they’d fit perfectly together. Both shows are about a surreal and macabre family living in American suburbia and disrupting the lives of their neighbors with their otherworldly hijinks. Sound familiar?
The main difference between the two shows is the way the characters viewed their placement in the world they inhabit.
The Munsters were always oblivious to the fact that didn’t fit in. They just automatically assumed everyone had the same personal tastes as them. Whenever they encountered anyone who behaved strangely around them they would write that person off as being the odd one rather than questioning themselves. As such the main cast was structured like a stereotypical sitcom family who just happened to be classic movie monsters.
The Addams were well aware that they were abnormal and they loved it! They lived life with in their own little world and didn’t care what anyone thought of them. As such the characters were far more colorful and quirky as individuals but there was little in the way of refences to other horror franchises beyond just a general love of the twisted and strange.
Tumblr media
7. Green Acres (1965 - 1971) and the Rual-verse (1962 - 1971)
Tumblr media
So the MCU is not the first franchise to bring viewers an interconnected universe to the small screen. Far from it, as sitcoms had been doing this for decades, starting with the ‘rualverse’. Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and Green Acres were all produced by the same company and were treated as spinoffs of each other, complete with crossovers and shared characters and sets.
Of the three, the last show, Green Acres, has the most in common with Wandavision. A well to do businessman and his lovely socialite wife settle down in small town America on a farm in order to get away from the stresses of city life, only to find new stresses in the country. Eva Gabor, herself a natural Hungarian, plays the character of Lisa as Hungarian making her one of the few non-native born Americans on tv screens during the cold war. Despite her posh nature and original protests to the move, Lisa assimilates to the rural life far easier than her husband, Oliver. Who, as the main comedic thread, can’t comprehend his new quirky neighbors’ odd and often illogical behavior.
Tumblr media
8. Hogan’s Heroes (1965 - 1971) and Get Smart (1965 - 1969)
Tumblr media
So as comic fans have been quick to point out, it’s looking like both A.I.M. (Hydra) and Sword (Shield) will be players in the story of Wandavision. To commemorate that here’s two shows to represent those opposing sides. Although in truth, neither series has anything else in common with each other but I need to condense things down someway.
In Hydra’s corner we got Hogan’s Heroes. A show all about taking down Nazis from within.
I love, love, love, ‘robin hood’ comedies where a group of con artists try week after to week to pull one over the establishment. The Phil Silvers Show, Mchale's Navy, and Top Cat, just to name a few examples are all childhood favorites of mine. However while those shows had a lot of morally ambiguous characters, Hogan’s Heroes has very clear cut good guys and bad guys, cause the bad guys are Nazis and the show relentless makes fun of the third reich as should we all. In fact I was watching Hogan’s Heroes while waiting for the GA run off election results. Fortunately my home state decided to kick out our own brand of Nazis this year.
For Shield, we got the ultimate spy spoof, Get Smart. Starring, Inspector Gadget himself, Don Adams, as the bumbling Maxwell Smart. Get Smart, is a hilarious send up of Cold War espionage but the real selling point of the show, imho, is Max and his co-worker 99′s relationship. You can cut the sexual tension in the air with a knife all while laughing your ass off.
Tumblr media
9. Batman (1966 - 1968)
Tumblr media
First was Superman and then came Batman. Yet while Superman was a serious action show, Batman was a straight up comedy. Showcasing that superheroes could indeed be funny.
Also shout out for Batman being the only show on this list to have an actual crossover with it’s competitor, The Green Hornet.
Tumblr media
10. Julia (1968 - 1971)
Tumblr media
Since episode two features the first appearances of Herb and Monica, let’s highlight the first black led sitcom since the cancelation of Amos ‘n Andy over a decade earlier. The show focuses on single mother and military nurse, Julia, as she tries to live her life without her recently decease husband, who was killed in Vietnam, as she tries to raise their six year old son on her own.
The series is cute. It’s more of a throw back to earlier family sitcoms where there’s no fantasy and life lessons are the name of the game. It’s the fact that the main character is a single black woman is what made the show so subversive and important at the time.
Runner Ups
There’s much good stuff in the 60s, so here’s some others that didn’t make the cut but I would recommend anyways.
Car 54, Where Are You? (1961 - 1963)
Tumblr media
I call this the Brooklynn 99 of the 1960s. Bumbling but well meaning Officer Toody longs to do good in the world and help anyone in need, but often screws things up with his ill thought out schemes. He often drags his best friend and partner, the competent but anxiety riddled, Muldoon into his escapades.
Mr. Ed (1961 - 1966)
Tumblr media
The grandfather of the sarcastic talking pet trope.
The Jetsons (1962 - 1963 and 1985 - 1987)
Tumblr media
Hanna-Barbera often took popular sitcoms and just repackaged them as cartoons with a fantasy theme to them. The Jetsons has no singular show that it rips-off but is rather more a grab bag of sitcom tropes that feature, robots, computers, and flying cars.
The Outer Limits (1963 - 1965)
Tumblr media
The Outer Limits was The Twilight Zone’s biggest competitor in terms of being a sic-fi/horror anthology series.
Gillian’s Island (1964 - 1967)
Tumblr media
The only comparison to WandaVision I could think of was that this is a sitcom about people being trapped in one place. But by that point I was running out of room on the list. Still it’s one of the funniest shows on here.
So yeah, this took longer than expected cause there’s a lot, here. Hopefully the 70s will be easier. Which I’ll post on Friday.

Should I Include “The Animated Series”?:
Man, I hate writer’s block. I’m trying to write a series of fics about “Star Trek: TOS”. At first, I was going to ignore “The Animated Series”, but I don’t know...I hadn’t watched any full episodes (save for a few clips) and I already have so much going on.
For context, these 10 stories would have the Third Doctor Who being assigned to help Kirk and the Enterprise before “Spearhead From Space”. As they’re supposed to take place from 2269-2270,  there would be enough time for these adventures:
-Going to a planet ruled by The Doctor’s estranged wife (and exiled Whovian), The Matchmaker, and learning about their deceased daughter.
-Revisiting Rigel VII and Argelius II.
-Meeting Mudd and Cyrano Jones again.
-Meeting characters from “Adam Adamant” and “UFO”.
-And having Kirk, Scotty, Spock, McCoy and The Doctor be in the “Dune” universe after the broken TARDIS malfunctioned.
-The Doctor meeting Gary Seven who may or may not be his son with The Matchmaker.
It’s also worthy to point out that Scotty and Uhura would marry (thanks to the Matchmaker living up to her title) and staying married due to falling in love with each other during their struggle to contact the Enterprise (to us, they’d only be gone for two weeks, yet it would equate to two years in the planet they were on.) This union would produce their daughter, Penda, who’d be born on the ship as the Five-Year Mission would come to an end.
With “The Animated Series” ending in 2270, I’m gonna have to jumble the timeline in order for everything to actually fit...Do I extend Uhura and Scotty’s stay with the Matchmaker? Do I just write off “Animated Series” season 2 episodes being set in January and February? do I even consider “The Animated Series” at all?

A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 110 - Under the Command of Evil Georgiou
Star Trek: Discovery - Season 1 Episode 15 - Will You Take My Hand?
Tumblr media
Okay, We're now onto the Season 1 Finale of Discovery! I'm excited to see how we end this season out!
We open aboard Discovery with making quoting something about the nature of feart, and unfortunately I don't recognise it, so I'm just left with the Foreboding nature of the passage.
This Georgiou's command style is immediately noticeably Terran. I loved how tense the Bridge was during the opening sequence. Her absolute disdain for the Klingons, Saru, and later in the episode Ash Tyler, pushes all of the right buttons in my head, and I can't wait for her to get her comeuppance. She makes a few veiled references to how she eats Kelpians towards Saru, and it just made my skin crawl, and so did her calling Ash an "it" later on. Unfortunately however, there is not much the crew can do for now, as she's the only one who fully knows the plan.
After the intro Georgiou and Michael interrogate L'Rell about which landing site would be best for discovery. Of Course L'Rell doesn't talk, which launches Georgiou into a much more brutal method of getting the information out of her. That doesn't work either, and Michael calls that to a stop. I'm really glad that Michael is starting to realise that maybe this isn't the way to go. Michael then takes Georgiou to Ash, and since he has Voq's memories, he willingly gives over the information they want. We also get a bit of worldbuilding about Klingon history, just a bit about Kahless and how he defeated someone called Molor, who the Klingons seemed to have worshipped in a similar way to how they worship Kahless now. I really want to know more this, and I'm trying to piece together their culture from the little scraps I'm being given.
This episode from the get go is clearly about the clear difference between Imperial tactics and Federation Tactics, and whether or not the ends justify the means when it comes to Georgiou's brutality.
This episode is putting in a lot of work to undo the mistakes of the last few episodes surrounding Georgiou, and I am 100% here for it. The last couple episodes tried to make her too sympathetic, when she is a fascist dictator, but here she is written and portrayed in such a creepy slimey way, and it's definetly what they should have been doing from the get go. I've already mentioned her racism, but also in the way she interacts with the human crew. Her various threats towards Michael, and just general attitude towards Sylvia Tilly gives me shivers, and in this episode alone I think she's earned a spot among my favourite villains so far.
Discovery Makes it's jump into the caves of Kronos, and the ground crew, made up of Michael, Ash Sylvia and Georgiou exit into an Orion market to try and get the location of this shrine.
On a side note, the more even split among male and female Orion slaves makes the whole idea feel a lot less behind-the-scenes slimy than the Orions did in Enterprise, thankfully. Here it feels slimy in a way where it feels like it's supposed to feel slimy, and not just... whatever Enterprise was doing in it's Orion focus episode. Also I'm not going to pretend like the eye-candy isn't appreciated in my bisexual brain, it feels a lot less uncomfortable when it doesn't feel like exploitation.
Amongst the chaos of the market, we get a few good downtime scenes, particularly of Sylvia being an absolute fish out of water, and a really well written heart to heart between Ash and Michael, where we finally get the full details of what happened to Michael's Bio-parents. Her survivor's guilt over this trauma is an interesting angle, and the detail of her memory over her trauma is something I really want to see explored in the future, and it really adds a interesting layer with her relationship with Ash.
Tilly finds out that the Drone she's guarding isn't a drone, but a planet cracking bomb designed to make the planet uninhabitable, and unfortunately Georgiou has moved too fast for Discovery to do anything.
Thankfully, Discovery manages to talk Starfleet out of the plan, and fromt here it's just a matter of sending in Michael to convince Georgiou to stop, which turned out easier than expected. Discovery hands the Detonator over to L'Rell, and convinces her to step up as the Klingons leader, and end the war. Ash choses to go with him, meaning we'll need a new chief of Security again. His goodbye to Michael . Georgiou is then let free, and I'm hoping we'll see her again sooner rather than later, because she still has a lot fascisty stuff to answer for.
Michael's speech at the end as she obtains her official pardon, and the crew get their official commendations, was also a fantastic way to cap off the season. We're also given an absolute shocker of a cliffhanger, as Discovery picks up a distress call from the Enterprise, so I can't wait to see what that's about!
I really liked this finale. I was shaky going into it with how the previous episodes were treating Georgiou, but this more than made up for it. It really capped of the whole methods vs results theme the season was going for, and it was just generally fun. I enjoyed myself here.
I have a couple Short Treks which I'll cover in one post tomorrow, and then immediately onto Season 2!

Now that I know you're a Whovian, I'm curious to know what other SciFi franchises you like. Please give me your opinion of the following:
Star Trek
Star Wars
Stargate
Warehouse 13
Eureka
Dune
This is all judgment-free, I promise. 😊
akhdhdbs okay I swear I’ve talked about dw on this acc long before this I’ve been a whovian for like 6 years, and it’s my favorite sci-fi media but I have seen a couple of those so
Star Wars: I have strong feelings. been a big fan since I was eight. the original trilogy is my favorite, Han Solo C3PO and prequels Obi Wan are tied for my favorite characters, the Empire Strikes Back is my favorite movie of the Skywalker saga, Rogue One is my favorite solo movie, and the Mandalorian is my favorite show. once I finish a few other shows I’m probably going to watch the animated series, but it hasn’t been high on my list of priorities
Star Trek: started to watch the show from the 60s, and I will say it does better than most shows from the 60s do as far as representation goes, but it’s still of it’s time. it’s good, but I also forgot I was watching it because it was the same week I found the last three seasons of criminal minds and I needed to watch that right then immediately. the science in Star Trek is better though so I will get back to it eventually
Stargate: I’ve heard good things? tentatively on my list
Eureka: never heard of it. lmk if it’s good tho
Dune: I literally just found out about this last week idk what to think. will do research later

The sun was beginning to ride down into the sky. Twilight was not far away but you were still perched on the wing of the ship, as your mind was focused on the engine's fuse panel. Your leg was swaying gently in the void as you were absorbed by the ship's advanced technology.
You had spent the rest of the day studying the structure of this fascinating tin can and came to the following conclusion: this scrap metal pile was not much different from an airplane.
It was reassuring for you, because even if you had never put your hands in an airplane, you had already studied the plans of a certain number and you could already recognize similarities in the layout of the electrical circuits.
You've seen enough for one day. You had a good idea of the problem and were already thinking about which store or workshop could provide you with some of the parts you needed to repair the aircraft.
You closed the small hatch that housed the main circuit board, and then a child's laughter caught your attention. You looked down and saw your dog walking around with the child on his back. He proudly trotted under the wing of the ship as the child tried as best he could not to fall. You laughed slightly in front of this improbable scene and stood up, walking on the roof of the ship to join the trapdoor that would bring you back to shore.
Your hands were covered with soot and grease and you hardly dared to touch the rungs of the ladder. Your dog was waiting for you at the foot of it and as soon as your foot touched the ground, he brushed his body against you, happy to be reunited with his favorite human.
The little one hadn't left your dog's back, his tiny fingers were wrapped in the long fur and he grabbed onto it hard so he wouldn't fall.
"A real little cowboy" You joked and the child started laughing.
You crouch down next to your dog, observing the child.
"I'd rather not even imagine what they'd do to you if they ever found you..." You thought aloud.
You were really worried about that little guy. He looked at you with his big eyes, tilting his head to the side as if he was trying to understand you better. He seemed to be looking for something in your eyes and then, as if he had just found it, he reached out his small arm to you with a big smile.
You could have melted in front of such tenderness and although you suspected that he wanted your arms, you gently waved your filthy fingers in front of his eyes.
"I can't, my hands are all dirty, look at this! If you ask me, this ship may be super cool, but it deserves a good spring cleaning! »
The child babbled with amusement and his hand perched again in your dog's fur. This child was precious and when you thought of the human horror that the people of this planet could bring, a wave of determination fell upon you.
"I'll do my best to get this piece of junk off the ground, but you, sweetheart, I want you to stay with Banjo. "You took a look at your dog who seemed to quickly understand the message. "He will protect you."
The child listened carefully to you before yawning. Fatigue weighed on his eyes and he snuggled into Banjo's fur, your dog, to fall asleep.
It didn't take you long to find the man in armor. His head was plunged into the mechanical arm of the ship that served as a landing foot. He heard you coming and looked at you. Before you even said anything to him, he handed you a cloth so you could wipe your hands.
"Oh, thank you. "You said.
He didn't answer anything and just watched you clean your hands.
"I'm not going to lie, there's a lot of work to be done.”
"Is it manageable? "He asked you.
"Yes. Mostly it' s about finding the parts that will be complicated but hey, you just made Star Trek real so from then on, there's nothing impossible in there! "You said.
Once again, he remained silent. You just saw him tilting his head towards your dog and the sleeping child on his back. You saw a tension settling on the man's shoulders. He was obviously holding back from picking up the child and it was probably the intense look your dog gave to the man that prevented him from making a movement. You were wondering why he was so suspicious of your dog, but you decided it was time to stop torturing him like that. You leaned over to gently hold the child in your arms, doing everything possible not to wake him up before putting the child back in his father's arms. The man relaxed almost instantly and it clicked in your head.
"Tell me, have you ever met a dog before?"
"I've met stranger things. "
"Well, you should know that dogs are humans' best friends here. They are the only ones who will never fail you."
"He didn't stop you from following me, though. "He said.
"That's exactly why I followed you."
You smile at him gently, scratching the head of your dog who had sat next to you.
The night had completely fallen. The only lights were coming from the ship and you felt the air cooling down. A shiver crept under your jacket and it was no longer warm enough to protect you from the cold of autumn nights. So it was about time you came back home.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
He nodded and as you began to turn back, you suddenly wondered if you were doing the right thing by leaving them alone in the middle of the forest, at the mercy of curious looks. You looked back, the man was coming back into his ship and it was bothering you. You didn't know why, but your instinct told you that leaving without them was not the way to go.
You looked down at your dog who stared at you with curious eyes and you could not bring yourself to do so.
"Excuse me! "You called him out.
The man turned to you, waiting for you to talk.
"You have nowhere to go, have you? "You asked him, walking back.
"The ship. "He said.
"You should come to my house. »
Din was caught off guard. If you could have seen his face, you would have seen him widening his eyes in astonishment. To him, there was no reason to find a dwelling place on this planet. He had checked, he knew there was nothing dangerous, he knew he could stay in his ship without fear of being found by mercenaries or other bounty hunters. He already thought it was honourable enough of you to help him and he found it even more incredible that an Earthwoman would trust him. Because that wasn't what he read about the people of Earth.
"That's not necessary."
"I won't let a poor Daft Punk imitation refuse my offer. "You argued.
"... Who the hell are Daft Punk?"
" That is one more reason! "You stated.
And indeed, you left him no choice. You crossed your arms on your chest, staring at him while waiting for him to decide. That, on the other hand, he had read about it, earthling stubbornness.
He gave in faster than he would have liked. He sighed deeply, going down the ramp to join you.
"Thank you. "He said.
Actually, he had hoped you'd ask him to sleep in a real bed.

Dr. Who as a film series?
I have literally never been an avid fan of Doctor Who or watched the show (mostly just Tumblr interactions, wikipedia, and clips here and there), but after some mild intrigue, I had the thought of “How would the show translate into a film series?” Dr. Who has mainly kept to television, but as it has also ran concurrent to Star Trek, who has since made its forays to film and back to television again, what would a cinematic Dr. Who look like? I’d imagine the main benefit is that stories are more self-contained, as well as plot elements a little more organized and synthesized for conciseness, but also you would have a substantially bigger budget to work with in terms of production and effects (the current highest costing Dr. Who episode I googled is $4 million, which was for the 1996 TV movie).
There is the fact of whether it works better on television though, whether it’s meant to translate into film at all, but I did find some articles outlining some promising possibilities if it did make the jump to film which I’ll link below (it was announced about a decade ago that David Yates wanted to work on a film series, but evidently that hasn’t happened yet).
Any whovians want to jump in with their two cents for a layman like me?

Fandom Ratings:
Fandoms will be rated on a scale of 1-10 based on the type of community and atmosphere among the fans. It should be noted that these are my OPINIONS, based on my personal experiences with each of these fandoms. Feel free to disagree or add your own thoughts.
Marvel Fandom: A wide, diverse array of fans of all ages and backgrounds. Fans can range from all-out obsessed to casual observer, and anyone is welcome to join the ranks. Kids, teens, and adults alike can revel in the joys of superheroes. However, dedicated fans tend to hold strong opinions about their favorite characters/ships/movies/shows, which can lead to the occasional argument. 8/10.
Lord of the Rings Fandom: A group of very passionate people. Most love the books and movies alike, although book fans and movie fans can disagree from time to time. The overall atmosphere is pretty chill and welcoming, and people from all over the world have shared their love for Tolkien for decades, making it one of the older, and most agreeable fandoms. 9/10.
Star Wars Fandom: One of the most divisive fandoms present. Both young and old Star Wars fans are VERY vocal and always disagreeing about something, whether its screeching their opinions on the prequels and sequels to anyone who will listen or ranting about Disney ruining their beloved series. The fandom has a very divided atmosphere, which can make it difficult to find common ground with fellow fans. -2/10.
Star Trek Fandom: A quieter, but dedicated group of people. These are some hardcore sci-fi fans. Although they’re vastly outnumbered by the Star Wars fandom, these people offer a much more comfortable environment with more room for differing opinions. These people have been around for a while and even helped pave the way for other fandoms to unfurl in their wake. We owe a lot to the Star Trek fandom. 9.5/10.
Harry Potter Fandom: A newer, but no-less devoted group of fans. Most HP fans fall into the younger category, but adults love it too. This fandom offers a galore of characters, ships, and fanfiction to fuel your love for the series, and the doors are always open for new fans. Again, there are some strong-willed fans with firm opinions, but most fans can agree on the things that matter (like what the heck was the Cursed Child??). 9/10.
Stranger Things Fandom: A fledgling bunch of fans that’s already formed some strong roots in the fandom community. Although people of all ages have expressed their love for the series, most fans actively contributing and participating are kids, teens, and young adults. These fans have forged strong connections with their favorite characters and ships and aren’t afraid to talk about it with anyone who’ll pay them a few minutes of attention. Unfortunately, some of the fans can be a bit immature and fail to respect that many of the main actors are still children themselves. The fans are often speculating about co-stars dating one another, which can create an unhealthy, and even toxic environment for the stars to participate in. 6.5/10.
Riverdale Fandom: We get it. You like Cole Sprouse. Go drink a milkshake. 3/10.
Doctor Who Fandom: Ah, a classic. Similar to the Star Trek fandom, Whovians have been kickin’ it in the fandom community for a while now, and they’re not going anywhere. These fans love to chat about their favorite Doctors and companions, and even though disagreements can get heated, most are willing to find common ground with their fellow Whovians. They’re a close-knit group of fans who have no problem talking to a stranger wearing a Tardis shirt. 9.5/10.
Sherlock Fandom: A hardcore group of nerds who will watch literally anything with Benedict Cumberbatch. These guys love the Cumberbatch, and think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. Sherlockians can be a little snobbish about their favorite characters and ships, as well as the fandom as a whole, but in the end they’re just a bunch of mystery-loving nerds who love a good cup of tea. 8.5/10.
DC Comics Fandom: Another great superhero fandom for men and women of all ages. DC may not get all the hype that Marvel does, but their fans are no less passionate to their cause. These fans have stuck with it through box-office busts and an entourage of rotten tomatoes, never losing their love for the iconic characters. Despite the endless disagreements about casting Batman, as well as the ongoing Marvel vs. DC debate, DC is a fun community for anyone who loves a good hero (or villain!). 8/10.
Disney Fandom: A fun, light-hearted group of deeply committed fans. These guys love their Disney flicks. The music, the animation, the animal sidekicks... they love it all. What’s even better is seeing how the fans vocalize the need for more inclusion in Disney films, and aren’t afraid to call out mistakes in past flicks in order to make better movies in the future. Disney fans just want to see the world become a better place. 9/10.
Pokemon Fandom: A truly inclusive community for anyone and everyone. These guys love everything Pokemon, and they’re always open to new fans and new experiences. I’m still working on getting into Pokemon, but the fandom has been so kind and helpful to me and I wish that every fandom were as wonderful and caring as this group of nerds. Just a wonderful bunch. 11/10.

Some random headcanons
They watched cats together. Flynn and Julie watch it for a laugh and because the musics good. It did however traumatise Alex. Luke burst into tears at Memories. And Reggie is now also a cat person. Willie laughed with the girls but stopped when he saw Alex’s face
All three were very pleased that ducktales was back. Though Julie banned Reggie from watching it for a week after he started calling Ray “Uncle Donald”. He’s got the uncanny ability to replicate the speech pattern of the kids from the original
Reggie’s a Star Wars fan yes. And he does end up liking JarJar. And he ended up loving Rogue One and Solo. But he ends up living in fear of a certain facist from the sequels
Alex is a Star Trek fan. And he’s firmly in Picard’s camp. Xavier was his favourite comic book. So you can imagine how happy he was when he found out about the movies
They were happy to find out that power rangers was still on. They didn’t recognise anyone but they were happy it was still on. Reggie in particular loved the 2017 movie. Only to be traumatised by season two of stranger things
Flynn converted Luke into a whovian. And he can’t be convinced River wasn’t the doctor and Elven was the companion
Carlos favourite superhero is iron man. And he spent Halloween “flying” through the neighbourhood in a homemade costume thanks to the boys and Flynn.
Julie and Flynn have they same birthday and Ray is Flynn’s godfather
Besides music the boys best subjects were math (Alex), science (Luke) and English (Reggie)
Julie eventually starts calling Alex and Reggie “her brothers”. Luke is a little put off by that until Alex explains why. Then he doesn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day.

Watching Picard, finally, and I’m shocked by two things:
1) How bad the composition is for a AAA show in the year 2020 (the amount of repetition of plot and exposition in the Icheb episode alone surpasses some entire shows) and
2) How little I care about Picard himself, who was once My Captain on that deep and primal level that only Trekkies and Whovians descend to. I cannot even empathize with his guilt because it comes couched in such absolutely wild, all-encompassing ego, and if I didn’t know TNG was a thing I would have gotten completely bored by five episodes in just waiting for this guy to actually do even one single thing that was heroic or even particularly interesting.
Also, my wife and I keep looking at every non-Federation set and going “why is this low-budget Star Wars suddenly, this aesthetic is so not Trek?” which is very distracting.
Reddit curative fandom is going ham with theories and speculation and fanwank and seem to be really enjoying themselves, and I can see that, because the world-building is pretty interesting, plays with things fans have always speculated about, and has significant implications for the rest of the universe, even if it’s also basically stolen wholesale from Mass Effect. But I’m kind of sitting here like “your competition is the Expanse and this is what you’re bringing to the table? Where is your A game I know you have it” c’mon now.
