WHAT?! Somehow, we've been doing this for a decade?!
Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men will be celebrating our 10th birthday on April 13 in Portland, Oregon, with a live show at Clinton Street Theater (10 AM - 12 PM) followed by a birthday party at Books With Pictures (2 - 5 PM)!
RSVP HERE FOR ONE OR BOTH EVENTS!
FINE PRINT:
Both events are free and all-ages-friendly (assuming you're down with your kid learning a few choice swears).
The live show is mask-mandatory; masks will be provided at the door for anyone who doesn't bring their own. (The party is outdoors and therefore mask-optional.)
There will be both party favors (free) and merch (legal currency or barter), the latter including a fancy new 10th-anniversary print by Colleen Coover!
We welcome costumes and other benign silliness.

Books with Pictures: Batman and Robin Eternal (vol 1-2) (2015-2016)
Writers: James Tynion IV & Scott Snyder
In which I just decided to skip a bunch of arcs to get to the one I really wanted to read 🙈
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was just really in a Robin mood and I saw a screenshot on Instagram from this story arc that got my attention and I needed the context for this:
Tumblr media
My ultimate thing is that I very much love seeing Batman be a dad, so I needed to see how he followed up with Dick’s confession of what he saw after being in contact with Scarecrow fear gas for the first time.
I was just too lazy to read Batman Eternal. I did have the basic understanding is that Dick was still working with Spyral but the bat family is aware that he’s alive. Oh, and Batman has amnesia.
I would say that this was overall enjoyable. Cassandra Cain makes her comeback in the New 52 in this story-- before it all gets rebooted again lol. Despite the title, Batman (in the present) remains mostly not present. The only glimmers of Batman we see is when we are taken back to Batman and (Dick) Robin's first case with the Scarecrow, via flashbacks, which I honestly don't mind. Bruce and Dick are my favorite Batman and Robin dynamic, so this was very much my taste 👌
This is a Robins story and I was happy to see them all working together-- even Damian making a last minute appearance.
As for the story, a villain, Mother whom Batman in the past tried to hide from Robin, returns many years later. Mother essentially uses traumatized children to become her army in cleansing the world and she offers Batman a “better” partner. In the present, she finally starts enacting her plans.
I love seeing Batfam have their Batfam moments and there is plenty of that here!

First Friday Office Hours
Tumblr media
It's the first anniversary of First Friday Office Hours at @bookswithpictures. On the first Friday of every month, I set up a table at BwP here in PDX and give emerging artists the best, most in-depth feedback on their work that I can.
This Friday, December 2nd, I'll be there, masked, from 4- 6PM. You mask up, sign in at the counter, and show me 6-8 pages of comic book storytelling. I'll give you honest feedback based on my 30 years experience. What works, what doesn't, how to tweak a panel for clarity or impact.
Is this networking? No. I'm not there to hire you, give your pitch to a publisher, or introduce you to other, more famous comics people. I'm just there to talk with you about the pages you've drawn. Like a class in art school, but without the crippling debt.
I restrict this to comics pages- storytelling- because that's what I know. If you're looking for feedback on writing, illustrations, logos, fine art, or poster designs, I'm just not that guy. There are people who know way more about those specialties than I do.
Also, I only do this in person here in Portland- not online. This is what I can take on.
Originals or copies? Copies are better. Portland is rainy! I can make notes on copies directly! And yes, I *can* look at your work on an ipad, but if possible, please print your work out. It's much easier to critique work on paper, and no tech snafus, either!
What does this cost? Zip. It costs nothing. Just bring your pages, your love of comics, and a good mask.

That's my shop!!
And, let me tell you, they deserve the award so much. The whole crew is amazing. The shop is wonderfully welcoming and inclusive. Katie, who owns it, has always shaped it as a community space as well as a store. They do so much community outreach and have great events, and just a wonderful vibe and a top-notch selection.
I love them, okay. I love them.

it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

Books With Pictures: Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham (2000)
Writers: Mike Mignola and Richard Pace
Artist: Troy Nixey
So it got announced that this was going to get the animated movie treatment, so I dived in!
Tumblr media
Not my favorite story, but I can appreciate it for what it is!
Heavily influenced by H.P. Lovecraft, Bruce Wayne finds himself facing creatures of the most evil and supernatural kind.
This was honestly pretty freaky— especially towards the end 😳
The story is pretty interesting, but the art itself, while not horrible, kind of takes away from the story just because of how odd the people look sometimes. I guess it works for the setting, but kinda sucks when in the beginning theres 5 characters who are dressed exactly the same and it’s difficult to differentiate who is talking.
Wonder how this will look in animation!
Also— definitely not kid friendly. Don’t know how a child would process the weird imagery along with the nihilistic undertones.
